- 0:00Speaker 1: She's on the Money.
- 0:02Speaker 2: She's on the Money.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 0:27Speaker 1: for millennials who want financial freedom, believe it or not.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Today is the first of December, which means Christmas is
- 0:35Speaker 1: just three and a half weeks away, and to celebrate
- 0:38Speaker 1: over the next few Wednesdays, we'll be bringing you some
- 0:41Speaker 1: extra festive content To kick things off. Today, we're going
- 0:45Speaker 1: to be diving deep into our top twelve hacks to
- 0:47Speaker 1: help you save money this silly season, and given Australians
- 0:51Speaker 1: are tipped to spend twenty three point nine billion dollars
- 0:55Speaker 1: on Christmas this year, poofed. Indeed, VICKI d these tips
- 1:00Speaker 1: could be exactly what we all need now. My name
- 1:04Speaker 1: is Georgia King, and joining me as always is of
- 1:07Speaker 1: course financial advisor Victoria devine v. Firstly, happy first day
- 1:11Speaker 1: of summer. Hello, great news, great results. Thank you and
- 1:14Speaker 1: did you enjoy the intro of the pod? You know
- 1:18Speaker 1: I did? You saw me boppin and Jivan I love it? Yeah?
- 1:21Speaker 3: We this time, guys, we played it before we started
- 1:25Speaker 3: podcasting so that we could feel extra festive.
- 1:28Speaker 1: And I'm feeling festive for sure.
- 1:30Speaker 3: This is how adults run their lives and.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Work, right, Yeah, yeah, for sure, for sure. The twenty
- 1:35Speaker 1: three point nine billion dollars is what I said before.
- 1:38Speaker 3: I've never seen in as many dollars as that in
- 1:40Speaker 3: my whole life.
- 1:41Speaker 1: It's a lot. It's a big jump from last year
- 1:44Speaker 1: as well, so that is information that's come from Finder.
- 1:47Speaker 1: But that's a lot of billions VD.
- 1:50Speaker 3: That's many billions, in fact, it's twenty three point nine
- 1:52Speaker 3: of them, correct.
- 1:53Speaker 1: So how do you feel about that? Is that's obviously
- 1:55Speaker 1: not what you're expecting this year.
- 1:58Speaker 3: No, I've read the reports, I've seen it, and to
- 2:01Speaker 3: be honest, I think that a lot of us are
- 2:02Speaker 3: going to be making up for having such not so
- 2:06Speaker 3: nice years.
- 2:08Speaker 1: And I think that a.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Lot of us just feel like we want to make
- 2:10Speaker 3: ourselves feel a bit better. So I'm not surprised that
- 2:13Speaker 3: we are all doing that. It's kind of like a
- 2:15Speaker 3: bit of a rebound in a way, like you're bouncing
- 2:17Speaker 3: back into something by potentially going too hard. So it
- 2:21Speaker 3: does make me a little bit uncomfortable, especially given the
- 2:24Speaker 3: amount of financial stress that so many people have been
- 2:27Speaker 3: in this year.
- 2:28Speaker 1: It just doesn't make sense.
- 2:29Speaker 3: To put even more financial stress on ourselves when in reality,
- 2:33Speaker 3: I guarantee most people can't least off the top of
- 2:36Speaker 3: their head exactly what they got for Christmas last year.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a really good point.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Actually, thank you, it's the one I just made.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Jeez, well done. There's a start out there and I
- 2:45Speaker 1: don't have it with me. Statt girl has let the
- 2:46Speaker 1: team down today. But isn't Georgia King? Is it true
- 2:50Speaker 1: that Christmas is among the most financially stressful times of year? Yes?
- 2:53Speaker 3: Absolutely, it is arguably the most financially stressful time of year,
- 2:58Speaker 3: and it's the most likely time of the year that
- 3:00Speaker 3: your partner is going to ask you for a divorce.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Scary stuff.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Oh geez, a lot happening. Then just throw the throw
- 3:07Speaker 1: the book at it. But before we move into our tips,
- 3:10Speaker 1: I also wanted to add that, according.
- 3:12Speaker 3: It's not a tip, don't ask your partner for a
- 3:14Speaker 3: divorce unless you're actually thinking about that already in that dress,
- 3:17Speaker 3: send to cheese on the money and be like, great idea,
- 3:20Speaker 3: but get him that for Christmas.
- 3:23Speaker 1: But before we do get to our proper tips today,
- 3:25Speaker 1: by I just wanted to point out that, according to
- 3:28Speaker 1: that same research, millennials are expected to spend more than
- 3:32Speaker 1: any other generation this year, and it's actually one five
- 3:36Speaker 1: hundred and eighteen dollars according to Finder. That's so much money.
- 3:41Speaker 3: I can't fathom that people are spending that much money
- 3:44Speaker 3: at Christmas again, especially given how much we've been through
- 3:47Speaker 3: in the last twelve, eighteen, twenty four months, Like it
- 3:50Speaker 3: just seems like a silly number when fifteen hundred dollars
- 3:53Speaker 3: would be a really great emergency fund for someone. I'm
- 3:56Speaker 3: not saying go and don't spend money on Christmas, but
- 3:58Speaker 3: like maybe one for you, two for me kind of
- 4:01Speaker 3: vibes where you're actually putting yourself first this Christmas and
- 4:05Speaker 3: making sure And I don't mean in a gift giving way,
- 4:07Speaker 3: I mean in a savings way.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Georgia.
- 4:10Speaker 3: I feel like people might take that advice or just
- 4:12Speaker 3: run with it, but that don't okay, So let's get
- 4:15Speaker 3: straight into the tips. Let's do it be okay. Our
- 4:17Speaker 3: first tip here is to shop online where possible. Why
- 4:21Speaker 3: is this such a classic tip?
- 4:23Speaker 1: VIKIDK.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Is it so that we can use shop back and
- 4:25Speaker 3: get some six sick cash back?
- 4:27Speaker 1: Is that why? I think? I think that's why.
- 4:29Speaker 3: That's an unsolicited sponsor shout out, like they're not paying
- 4:32Speaker 3: for that, but I genuinely think that by shopping online, one,
- 4:35Speaker 3: you can make more educated decisions, so you can like
- 4:38Speaker 3: look around without having to walk the entirety of Chadsten
- 4:41Speaker 3: three times to find the best price for a singular item.
- 4:46Speaker 1: The second thing.
- 4:47Speaker 3: There is you can make the most of discounts, and
- 4:49Speaker 3: usually you can google discount codes or like sign up
- 4:52Speaker 3: to their website and get ten percent off your first purchase,
- 4:56Speaker 3: or you can use things again like shop back, which
- 4:58Speaker 3: we obviously advocate for, whether they're paying us to say
- 5:00Speaker 3: it this time or not. And it means that you're
- 5:04Speaker 3: more likely to buy less because you don't have as
- 5:08Speaker 3: much impulsiveness when you're shopping online as compared to when
- 5:12Speaker 3: you like walk through Maya and you see those little
- 5:14Speaker 3: gift things, You're like, oh my gosh, Georgia would love
- 5:15Speaker 3: that as well. I'll just pop that in her stocking.
- 5:18Speaker 3: So I feel like shopping online is probably a really
- 5:21Speaker 3: good idea, but we need to do it early, especially
- 5:24Speaker 3: because we know that throughout the last year, os Post
- 5:27Speaker 3: has been pretty good at being delayed. So if you
- 5:29Speaker 3: are going to be shopping online this Christmas, I'd be
- 5:32Speaker 3: doing it sooner rather than later, so you don't end
- 5:34Speaker 3: up doing the mad dash to a shopping center at
- 5:36Speaker 3: midnight the day before Christmas because your presence dinner or I.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Guess it also is a really big time saber e
- 5:42Speaker 1: which you know, everything amps up at this time of year.
- 5:44Speaker 1: We're all so busy, so that's quite handy as well.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Our second tip for today V is of course, to
- 5:50Speaker 1: know your budget and to not be tempted to spend
- 5:53Speaker 1: more than you can actually afford. Amen.
- 5:55Speaker 3: And there is a budgeting template for Christmas on our
- 5:59Speaker 3: web sites, so use it. Write exactly what you want
- 6:03Speaker 3: to spend down and then work it out properly, because
- 6:06Speaker 3: I think the one thing that we are all really
- 6:08Speaker 3: naughty at at Christmas time is just assuming.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Like in my head, George, I'll be like, oh, I'll probably.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Spend about five hundred dollars at Christmas time, Like in
- 6:16Speaker 3: my head that's a lot of money, because it is.
- 6:19Speaker 3: But then I forget that everything adds up. So I've
- 6:22Speaker 3: got my sister, I've got my partner, I've got you know,
- 6:25Speaker 3: my nieces and nephews. I've probably got family Chris Kringle,
- 6:29Speaker 3: and five hundred dollars is going to for me creep up,
- 6:32Speaker 3: really quickly because of the amount of people I buy
- 6:34Speaker 3: presents for. So we've got to be really realistic about
- 6:38Speaker 3: what that looks like.
- 6:40Speaker 1: And setting realistic.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Budgets at the start is going to mean you keep
- 6:43Speaker 3: to that budget. Because I might allocate it all out
- 6:45Speaker 3: and go, all right, fifty bugs per present sounds reasonable.
- 6:49Speaker 3: I write it all down and realize that's actually out
- 6:51Speaker 3: of my budget.
- 6:52Speaker 1: But if I cut it.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Down to forty dollars a gift, I'm bang on. So
- 6:55Speaker 3: if we do these little negotiations with ourselves and set
- 6:57Speaker 3: the tone at the start and set the expectation, then
- 7:01Speaker 3: we don't find ourselves blowing out because you just didn't
- 7:03Speaker 3: think about it comprehensively enough. And it's so easy to
- 7:06Speaker 3: forget how much little presents add up. And it's not
- 7:10Speaker 3: just about am I getting Georgia a Christmas present?
- 7:13Speaker 1: Low key? Yes, I am, just FYI love it.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Second thing is the little things like are you going
- 7:20Speaker 3: to go to a friend's house for some Christmas drinks
- 7:22Speaker 3: or a Christmas barbecue? How much is that box of
- 7:25Speaker 3: favorites or their favorite box of chocky lint balls? Like
- 7:29Speaker 3: those things can be twenty plus dollars very easily. You
- 7:33Speaker 3: go to three of those barbecues. You spent sixty bucks.
- 7:35Speaker 3: You didn't even realize you were going to spend to.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Sure slight digression. A couple of weeks ago, I actually
- 7:40Speaker 1: did chat about favorites and specifically picnic bars, which I'm
- 7:47Speaker 1: going to say it here on the podcast are a
- 7:49Speaker 1: grossly underrated chocolate bar.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Why come on, tell us exactly, why get us on
- 7:55Speaker 3: your team?
- 7:56Speaker 1: Sellers? When I was younger, member that you're in your twenties,
- 8:01Speaker 1: so you are, in fact, Oh thanks girl. I don't
- 8:03Speaker 1: feel it though, but you know, you get a box
- 8:06Speaker 1: of favorites, you're snagging the flake, You're snagging the caramelo blake.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Oh my god. Everyone. Maybe we're not so similar, you
- 8:15Speaker 1: and I. But I always dismissed picnics as just being
- 8:18Speaker 1: like this greedy, peanutty mess of a chocolate that was
- 8:21Speaker 1: like too rich, you could never finish a whole one. Anyway.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago, I was
- 8:27Speaker 1: given a box of favorites by someone who clearly didn't
- 8:30Speaker 1: like me very much. I'm joking, it was a great gift.
- 8:32Speaker 3: I was going to say, that's a solid twenty bucks
- 8:34Speaker 3: spent on you.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Right, there. It was a small box. Anyway, the picnics
- 8:38Speaker 1: were the only ones that were left, so I grabbed
- 8:40Speaker 1: one at times I get it and turns out it
- 8:43Speaker 1: was delightful. Yeah, anyway, that was a five minute, bloody
- 8:47Speaker 1: digression for no reason. But so you give them the
- 8:49Speaker 1: best healthy and I didn't even know. So if you've been.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Hoarding, maybe this is a Georgia King tip. If you've
- 8:56Speaker 3: been hoarding the picnics, you could actually gift them for
- 8:59Speaker 3: Christmas to Georgia and she'd be so.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Happy correct send them to me. I'll be thrilled, all right,
- 9:04Speaker 1: V Let's move on to our next little tip here.
- 9:07Speaker 1: It is to not go into debt where possible to.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Still exactly so, this one might not save you any
- 9:13Speaker 3: money during their festive season, but it's very likely going
- 9:17Speaker 3: to save you a lot of cash down the line.
- 9:19Speaker 3: You need to remember that the people in your life
- 9:21Speaker 3: who you might be gifting for quite likely don't want
- 9:25Speaker 3: you to go into debt for their benefit. Like, there's
- 9:27Speaker 3: nobody in my entire life who would say a present
- 9:31Speaker 3: is more important than Victoria staying out of debt, Like,
- 9:34Speaker 3: think about it that way. Reframing it really does help.
- 9:37Speaker 3: But don't feel like you need to lean on credit
- 9:39Speaker 3: or buy now, pay later providers, because they have been
- 9:43Speaker 3: really cheeky with their marketing recently to make you feel
- 9:45Speaker 3: like that's the easy way around Christmas time. But that,
- 9:48Speaker 3: from my point of view, is a very easy way
- 9:51Speaker 3: to start the year next year with debt, and we
- 9:54Speaker 3: don't want to be in that position if we can
- 9:55Speaker 3: avoid it now. Please don't think that I'm saying no
- 9:59Speaker 3: to any form of debt this Christmas, because I know
- 10:02Speaker 3: that there are a lot of families that are going
- 10:04Speaker 3: to need to rely on Christmas to have a day
- 10:06Speaker 3: that just sparks joy, and that is what's necessary.
- 10:09Speaker 1: At the end of the day.
- 10:10Speaker 3: As much as we always say don't go into debt,
- 10:12Speaker 3: don't do it.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Debt is bad.
- 10:14Speaker 3: It is, But I'm also a real person who gets
- 10:16Speaker 3: real situations, and sometimes that's the best decision for you
- 10:20Speaker 3: and your family at that point in time. The one
- 10:23Speaker 3: thing we don't want to do is stick our heads
- 10:26Speaker 3: in the sand about the debt, though, so we want
- 10:28Speaker 3: to make sure that whatever debt we are taking on
- 10:31Speaker 3: this festive season, we're avoiding getting in as much of
- 10:34Speaker 3: it as possible. It's not an in debt or not
- 10:38Speaker 3: in debt situation, if you need to use it, We're
- 10:40Speaker 3: still thinking about how we can save as much money
- 10:43Speaker 3: as possible.
- 10:43Speaker 1: We're not just.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Going gung home being like, all right, well I have
- 10:46Speaker 3: to use my credit card. I guess I'll just spend double,
- 10:49Speaker 3: which is a very easy thing to say and to
- 10:52Speaker 3: do to yourselves. But also about creating a plan of
- 10:56Speaker 3: how to get out of that debt, like make a
- 10:58Speaker 3: reasonable plan that says, Okay, if if I spend X
- 11:00Speaker 3: amount on after pay, I'm going to be able to
- 11:03Speaker 3: pay it off in this amount of time and I
- 11:04Speaker 3: know I'm going to have that income to service that debt,
- 11:07Speaker 3: because that's the thing we all forget when we just
- 11:10Speaker 3: tap our cards. And nowadays, with after pay being available
- 11:14Speaker 3: in every single retail outlet at every single shopping center
- 11:17Speaker 3: I've seen recently, it's going to be so much easier
- 11:20Speaker 3: to say, ah, that's a lot less pain to have
- 11:22Speaker 3: to part with my cash this festive season because I've
- 11:25Speaker 3: got so many presents to buy. It's not a good
- 11:27Speaker 3: idea if you're in that situation where you're thinking, oh,
- 11:31Speaker 3: I shouldn't be really spending it, but if I put
- 11:32Speaker 3: it on after pay, it's easier. Try finding something cheaper
- 11:36Speaker 3: to purchase, Like, it's just not worth it. And we're
- 11:39Speaker 3: talking about this a couple of weeks ago, George, on
- 11:42Speaker 3: the episode that we were ranting on about after Pay,
- 11:45Speaker 3: and you guys know how I feel about that. But
- 11:47Speaker 3: please keep in mind that after Pay made more than
- 11:50Speaker 3: eighty seven point three million dollars in late fees last
- 11:53Speaker 3: financial years, so they're not not benefiting from us not
- 11:57Speaker 3: being able to pay our debts back.
- 11:59Speaker 1: And that's a lot of money.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Arguably, Georgia, that's more money than you and I combined
- 12:04Speaker 3: or spend on Christmas.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Well just to touch, I reckon.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Just to touch just a couple of dollars over me.
- 12:09Speaker 3: But it's serious, Like, that's not something that anybody chose, right,
- 12:14Speaker 3: Nobody goes and puts something on after Pay with the
- 12:16Speaker 3: intention of incurring a late fee.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Nobody wants that, No, of course not.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Of course, people have incurred eighty seven point three million
- 12:23Speaker 3: dollars worth of late fees, so it clearly happens more
- 12:26Speaker 3: often than not.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Yeah, oh, after Pay, let's move on from that. Let's
- 12:30Speaker 1: bring the back, bring them up. And this one's this
- 12:33Speaker 1: one goes out to the lovers out there that are listening.
- 12:36Speaker 1: So if you and your partner always go over the
- 12:39Speaker 1: top with gift giving each and every year Christmases and
- 12:42Speaker 1: birthdays and adversaries, instead of just throwing more gifts at
- 12:47Speaker 1: each other, suggest experiences or perhaps just a year of
- 12:52Speaker 1: no gift, a year of no gift, as they say, V,
- 12:55Speaker 1: what are your thoughts on this one?
- 12:56Speaker 3: I think this is a good idea, Like, if you
- 12:58Speaker 3: guys have big shared that you're working towards, or maybe
- 13:02Speaker 3: you're both just a little strapped for cash this year
- 13:04Speaker 3: and don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on each
- 13:06Speaker 3: other or even any dollars on each other, just suggest
- 13:09Speaker 3: a no spend chrissy and ditch the gifts. Like I
- 13:12Speaker 3: think that there's something really empowering about being like, hey babe,
- 13:16Speaker 3: I reckon, we just don't buy each other gifts. So,
- 13:18Speaker 3: hey babe, I know you're really strapped for cash, please
- 13:21Speaker 3: don't buy me anything. And they'll probably be like, oh no, no, no,
- 13:23Speaker 3: and then you can agree.
- 13:24Speaker 1: To both not do it.
- 13:25Speaker 3: But I think it's one of those things that are
- 13:26Speaker 3: really underrated, like why do you have to get someone
- 13:29Speaker 3: a Christmas present? Like I just like let's think about
- 13:32Speaker 3: this on a deeper level, Like what's the point in
- 13:34Speaker 3: saying that. I know Steve doesn't listen to our podcast
- 13:37Speaker 3: and he has asked for a new toilet Tree spag,
- 13:40Speaker 3: so he will be getting that this Christmas. Oh, bless
- 13:42Speaker 3: you imagine.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I just feel like that's such a generic male gift,
- 13:46Speaker 1: so boring. Male toiletry bags are just bland, bland, bland, bland, yeah, bland.
- 13:53Speaker 3: But we went away a couple of weeks ago just
- 13:55Speaker 3: for the weekend, and he had this one that was
- 13:58Speaker 3: so old I swear it was like all of the
- 14:00Speaker 3: logos had rubbed off. He must have had it for
- 14:03Speaker 3: fifteen plus years. And I was like, where did.
- 14:05Speaker 1: You get that?
- 14:06Speaker 3: Like I've never said this in my life, And he
- 14:08Speaker 3: was like, oh, maybe that's what you can get me
- 14:10Speaker 3: for Christmas. So obviously I'm going to be spending big
- 14:13Speaker 3: on a toilet Trees bag, but I'm getting him something
- 14:17Speaker 3: he needs. So that's probably another way to give things
- 14:20Speaker 3: that people actually want is having a chat like, gee,
- 14:23Speaker 3: is there anything you need for Christmas? Like can exactly
- 14:26Speaker 3: get you something that's really practical?
- 14:28Speaker 1: And I mean, what's a toilet Tres bag?
- 14:31Speaker 3: Like thirty bucks or something like, is he yeah, trot
- 14:34Speaker 3: down to Kmart. I can get him something that I
- 14:35Speaker 3: know he wants, he needs, and he's going to use
- 14:38Speaker 3: money win.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Yeah, love it, Harps and I Actually we've been wanting
- 14:42Speaker 1: to go to Tasmania for years now. Pandemic has got
- 14:45Speaker 1: tasty a way we got tassy, I said, I'm by
- 14:50Speaker 1: I guess so we're really keen to go. So we're
- 14:53Speaker 1: going to go early next year. And instead of getting
- 14:56Speaker 1: gifts to each other, we're just gonna be like, that's
- 14:57Speaker 1: our present, Like we'll buy each other spirit tickets, red flights,
- 15:00Speaker 1: whatever we wound up doing. So, yeah, it's a nice
- 15:02Speaker 1: little idea. I love thank you so much.
- 15:04Speaker 3: And I mean Steve is a man of very few words.
- 15:07Speaker 3: I feel like now we've gotten engaged. Though I can't
- 15:09Speaker 3: stop talking about it. I'll just talk about him more. Also,
- 15:12Speaker 3: don't tell him I talk about him so much on
- 15:13Speaker 3: the podcast. I think he won't like it. Man and
- 15:16Speaker 3: few words. But if he was to write me a
- 15:18Speaker 3: Christmas card, that would mean a lot more to me
- 15:21Speaker 3: than a gift he could purchase me again, Man a
- 15:24Speaker 3: few words, so very unlikely to happen, but if it did,
- 15:28Speaker 3: that'd mean a whole heap.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Yeah. No, I'm with you on that one. We love
- 15:31Speaker 1: the nice words. Our next tip here VD is to
- 15:35Speaker 1: ditch the booze genius, which I definitely need to get around.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Can you talk us through this one.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Look, everyone is across the expense of gifts, food, travel
- 15:43Speaker 3: and everything else that adds up over the silly season,
- 15:47Speaker 3: but we often forget just how expensive booze is, especially
- 15:50Speaker 3: in Australia like Georgia. Do you remember back in the
- 15:52Speaker 3: day when we could travel and how cheap alcohol is overseas?
- 15:57Speaker 1: Oh, like in Europe. Oh my gosh, it is so cheap.
- 16:00Speaker 1: But that was so exciting. I remember being in Europe
- 16:03Speaker 1: with your little sister and bottles of vodka were like
- 16:05Speaker 1: seven dollars, Like, okay, we'll take ten. Oh my gosh.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Do you even remember being there? Yeah, Look, it's kind
- 16:12Speaker 1: of like a dream now, a long time ago.
- 16:14Speaker 3: All right, we digress back to Christmas conversation. But over
- 16:18Speaker 3: Christmas a lot of us tend to drink a lot.
- 16:21Speaker 3: And it's not necessarily us just wine after wine. It's
- 16:25Speaker 3: more than consistency that we are drinking every day. Because
- 16:29Speaker 3: I'll go Thursday out for drinks. Everybody seems to want
- 16:32Speaker 3: to catch up before Christmas. I don't know why that exists.
- 16:35Speaker 3: I'm sure you're gonna bring it up again soon, George,
- 16:37Speaker 3: but we all want to catch up before Christmas, and
- 16:40Speaker 3: that usually involves some form of alcoholic beverage, but it
- 16:43Speaker 3: needn't actually involve that alcoholic beverage. And keeping costs down,
- 16:48Speaker 3: saying you're not drinking that night completely takes the cost
- 16:52Speaker 3: of alcohol off the tab, which I think is a
- 16:54Speaker 3: very smart way to go, and you're going to wake
- 16:56Speaker 3: up feeling a whole heap better than you would if
- 16:58Speaker 3: you drank a fair few wine and then went to bed.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. Question on this fee, I'm curious to
- 17:04Speaker 1: hear your thoughts. If you were out for dinner with
- 17:07Speaker 1: your girlfriends. You're out with three of them and they
- 17:10Speaker 1: were all drinking, but you weren't. Yeah, when it came
- 17:12Speaker 1: time to pay the bill, would you just split it
- 17:14Speaker 1: evenly or would you say, hey, girls, I'm not drinking,
- 17:17Speaker 1: so do you mind if I ooft you know, don't
- 17:20Speaker 1: pay as much and we split it.
- 17:21Speaker 3: I would probably say that recently. Actually it's not the same,
- 17:26Speaker 3: but it's also the same. I'm in that phase of
- 17:29Speaker 3: my life. Guys, I'm thirty. These is wild. My friends
- 17:33Speaker 3: are having babies on purpose, and we're going out for
- 17:37Speaker 3: dinner and they won't drink because obviously they're pregnant. But
- 17:41Speaker 3: I'm the one that seems to go, hey, no, they
- 17:44Speaker 3: don't split it evenly, like you didn't have any of
- 17:46Speaker 3: the wine that we ordered. So I think that being
- 17:49Speaker 3: mindful of your friends that aren't drinking as well is
- 17:52Speaker 3: really important to make sure that you're not lumping an
- 17:55Speaker 3: unnecessary cost on them. Like for sure, I think a
- 17:58Speaker 3: lot of people are often too polite to bring it
- 18:00Speaker 3: up because they don't want to seem like the stingy friend,
- 18:03Speaker 3: when in an actual factor, you're not. You absolutely should say, hey,
- 18:07Speaker 3: you ordered a sixty dollars bottle of wine. I don't
- 18:09Speaker 3: particularly want to have to foot that cost, which is
- 18:12Speaker 3: very fair.
- 18:13Speaker 1: But if you're the one ordering the.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Wine, have the self awareness to say, hey, ge, you
- 18:17Speaker 3: didn't have any of this, do you want to just
- 18:19Speaker 3: split it differently?
- 18:20Speaker 2: Love it?
- 18:20Speaker 3: And they'll often be like, oh, yeah, okay, because that's
- 18:23Speaker 3: what they were thinking anyway.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Yeah for sure, okay. Perfect. Our last tip here before
- 18:27Speaker 1: we head to the break V is that if you're hosting,
- 18:30Speaker 1: don't be afraid to ask people to bring plates, to
- 18:34Speaker 1: bring their own booze, etc. Genius. Yeah, because obviously that
- 18:38Speaker 1: can get very expensive if you're footing the costs for everything.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Right, it also makes things so much easier on the day,
- 18:45Speaker 3: like instead of having to organize an entree and snacks
- 18:48Speaker 3: and probably a cheese platter, and cheese platters can add
- 18:51Speaker 3: up so quickly. Throw back to the time we did
- 18:53Speaker 3: our twenty five dollars Audi cheese platters. Yes, that was,
- 18:56Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, that was probably one of my favorite
- 18:58Speaker 3: collaborations we've ever done. Like I still talk to people
- 19:02Speaker 3: about the time we did that and it was just
- 19:04Speaker 3: so fun. But it's one of those things where if
- 19:07Speaker 3: you divvy it all up one people feel like they're contributing.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Usually when you go to somebody else's house, you would
- 19:13Speaker 3: take a gift, right, but you probably don't have to
- 19:16Speaker 3: do that if you're bringing a dessert or contributing in
- 19:18Speaker 3: some way to the meal, So that actually takes that
- 19:21Speaker 3: cost away as well, Like why would you bring a
- 19:23Speaker 3: box of favorites if you've just made a giant have
- 19:26Speaker 3: Like it makes sense to divvy those things up. It
- 19:28Speaker 3: means that everybody stress is less, everybody feels like they're contributing,
- 19:32Speaker 3: and we have a better time because arguably my cooking
- 19:35Speaker 3: isn't as good as everybody else's.
- 19:37Speaker 1: We love. Okay, we will be back after a very
- 19:40Speaker 1: short break with the rest of our festive tips, So
- 19:42Speaker 1: please don't go anywhere, guys. Alrighty VD, Let's jump bake.
- 19:47Speaker 3: Bake, Let's jump bake.
- 19:50Speaker 1: We are in J King. What is our next tip?
- 19:52Speaker 1: That is staying? Do you say that's staying? Absolutely that
- 19:57Speaker 1: let's say baic into it. I don't know what happened there.
- 20:01Speaker 1: That's okay. It is to be on. It is to
- 20:05Speaker 1: shop sooner than later, genius, tell us about it, fee genius.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Obviously, we mentioned before that Christmas Eve shopping is not
- 20:13Speaker 3: a good idea. One because you're under a heap of
- 20:15Speaker 3: fresher too because you probably should be in bed. But three,
- 20:18Speaker 3: you end up getting things that people don't want just
- 20:20Speaker 3: because you want to get a gift. So write down
- 20:22Speaker 3: your list. Arguably shop online so that you can use
- 20:25Speaker 3: systems like shop back and make sure that you're using
- 20:27Speaker 3: discount codes and like sign up codes. Now, Jking, this
- 20:31Speaker 3: might be a little controversial side tip. But I know
- 20:33Speaker 3: heaps of websites allow you to use a ten percent
- 20:36Speaker 3: discount for signing up to their newsletter, but it's for
- 20:39Speaker 3: your first purchase. But hypothetically, if you hadn't purchased from
- 20:42Speaker 3: your work email before, maybe you should sign up again
- 20:45Speaker 3: and reap the benefits of having that ten percent reapplied
- 20:49Speaker 3: to you. Personally, I think it's a genius idea.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Surely everyone does that, right? I thought everybody does that?
- 20:54Speaker 1: Or is it just us? I don't know, maybe we
- 20:56Speaker 1: just sound really dodgy, but I.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Think it's a really smart idea, Like why why not?
- 21:00Speaker 1: Definitely okay? Next to Pierre is to get your dey
- 21:05Speaker 1: on Jessica Richie's style and opt for homemade gifts. Oh
- 21:08Speaker 1: my gosh, I can't wait.
- 21:10Speaker 3: I know jess is going to make so many cute
- 21:13Speaker 3: homemade things this year. If you guys don't follow her
- 21:15Speaker 3: on Instagram, you absolutely should because she is the most
- 21:19Speaker 3: festive person think this way. She has negotiated with her
- 21:22Speaker 3: partner to be allowed to put the Christmas tree up early,
- 21:24Speaker 3: she forces him to wear matching pajamas with her at
- 21:27Speaker 3: Christmas time, and she has made the entire She's on
- 21:31Speaker 3: the money Christmas tree, but all the ball balls are
- 21:34Speaker 3: handmade and hand painted, and then she's like cricketed labels
- 21:39Speaker 3: so that it looks like a branded She's on the
- 21:40Speaker 3: money ball bull. So if you see a picture on
- 21:43Speaker 3: Instagram soon of our Christmas festive content which is coming,
- 21:47Speaker 3: because yay, but everything's been had made by Jess, Like
- 21:51Speaker 3: is that not wild?
- 21:52Speaker 1: That is obscene? What a crafty young woman I know?
- 21:56Speaker 3: And she was doing it the other day on Zoom actually,
- 21:58Speaker 3: because like sometimes working from home is a little bit lonely,
- 22:01Speaker 3: So I'll be bopping away and Jess and I will
- 22:03Speaker 3: just be on Zoom while we're working on separate things.
- 22:06Speaker 3: It feels like we're in the office. It's really cute.
- 22:08Speaker 3: But she's just like at her dining table doing her
- 22:11Speaker 3: craft DIY things, feeling all of these ballbles full of
- 22:14Speaker 3: like that she's on the money colored paints, and I
- 22:17Speaker 3: was just like so envious. But I'm glad you don't
- 22:19Speaker 3: have me there because I would mess that up royally.
- 22:22Speaker 3: But again I digress. Let's get back into our DIY tips.
- 22:26Speaker 3: How cute are homemade gifts, George?
- 22:28Speaker 1: They can be cute, they can also be putrid, but
- 22:31Speaker 1: they can be cute.
- 22:32Speaker 3: And gee, we had this conversation before the show about
- 22:35Speaker 3: we did what are we going to talk about when
- 22:37Speaker 3: it comes to DIY. We've obviously got our list of ideas. However,
- 22:41Speaker 3: some diys can be more questionable than not, and sometimes
- 22:45Speaker 3: you just feel a little bit all it when it
- 22:48Speaker 3: comes to thinking about diying something, because you're like, are
- 22:51Speaker 3: people actually going to like that? I'm not very crafty,
- 22:54Speaker 3: So we've got a couple of hot tips that hopefully
- 22:57Speaker 3: aren't cringe worthy, because we know that a chriss times.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Sometimes you get DIY gifts thee like, oh, thanks, Like,
- 23:04Speaker 3: do you remember in pre school Georgia. I don't know
- 23:07Speaker 3: if you guys did this, but the paper plate the
- 23:09Speaker 3: toilet roll, cutting the paper plate in half and making
- 23:12Speaker 3: like an angel.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Out of it? Ah yeah, yeah yeah iconic.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Yeah, and you'd like paint it why and put some
- 23:17Speaker 3: glitter on it? And I would give that to my
- 23:19Speaker 3: parents and like that's very specific because my parents still
- 23:22Speaker 3: have that on their Christmas tree because I made it
- 23:25Speaker 3: for them when it was like five. Yes, that's not
- 23:28Speaker 3: the type of DIY were talking this Christmas.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Though, are we? George? Not quite? Not quite? My suggestion
- 23:34Speaker 1: was to go for printing out like a gorgeous photo
- 23:38Speaker 1: of the person that you're gifting this gift too, and yourself,
- 23:42Speaker 1: perhaps not their.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Instagram selfies, though that would be comminditive weird. I mean
- 23:47Speaker 3: you could do that if they're really into themselves.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Exactly for the narcissists, they'll love that. But you know,
- 23:52Speaker 1: duckdown to km up, grab yourself a cheap frame, print
- 23:55Speaker 1: out the photo to a high quality, pop the photo
- 23:57Speaker 1: in the frame, you're see where it's going, and you've
- 23:59Speaker 1: got a gorgeous friend photo. That story adds I love photos,
- 24:03Speaker 1: it does. It all adds up.
- 24:05Speaker 3: I love photos as well, And to be honest, I
- 24:07Speaker 3: think in this day and age, I know that sounds
- 24:09Speaker 3: so old, but we don't print that many photos of ourselves.
- 24:13Speaker 3: And I remember, definitely we don't print that many photos
- 24:16Speaker 3: to have around our home. So someone gave me a
- 24:19Speaker 3: really cute frame with a photo in it, I'd be like,
- 24:20Speaker 3: oh my gosh, cute like and pop that beside my
- 24:23Speaker 3: bed or on my mantle or wherever. So I think
- 24:26Speaker 3: I really like that. The idea I had was I
- 24:29Speaker 3: actually had two ideas.
- 24:31Speaker 1: The first one was around cooking.
- 24:33Speaker 3: If you can cook, so I think Jess and I
- 24:35Speaker 3: soon are going to do a live on Instagram when
- 24:38Speaker 3: we make Christmas Crack, which if you haven't heard of
- 24:41Speaker 3: that before, it's like a salty, sweet Christmas treat that
- 24:44Speaker 3: is so easy to make and impresses literally everybody. And
- 24:49Speaker 3: I love it because it can kind of be hacked
- 24:51Speaker 3: in a million different ways. So it's got gluten in it,
- 24:54Speaker 3: but if you want to have a gluten free treat,
- 24:56Speaker 3: you can swap it out for gluten free biscuits that
- 24:58Speaker 3: you use.
- 24:59Speaker 1: If you're vegan, you can use vegan chocolate.
- 25:01Speaker 3: So it's very easy to switch around and make suit you.
- 25:05Speaker 3: And every time I've gifted it, the reviews are raving,
- 25:10Speaker 3: like it's not the prettiest thing in the world, and
- 25:12Speaker 3: you can kind of laugh about it and be like,
- 25:13Speaker 3: oh my gosh, I made this for you. And you
- 25:15Speaker 3: can make little cute tags, and in fact, George I
- 25:19Speaker 3: convinced Jess to create little custom DIY tags that you
- 25:23Speaker 3: guys can print out and use for these, which I
- 25:26Speaker 3: think will be really fun with the recipe on the
- 25:28Speaker 3: back so they can make more because that's really cute.
- 25:32Speaker 3: So that is a good idea. Baking something is always
- 25:34Speaker 3: a good idea, George, you're really good at rumbles.
- 25:37Speaker 1: I have heard. Yeah, yeah, I'm not bad. They're pretty good.
- 25:40Speaker 3: We learn about them in grade six home economics, right,
- 25:44Speaker 3: I think they're really good. But then the other thing
- 25:47Speaker 3: was making a favorites hamper for somebody. So if you're
- 25:50Speaker 3: a little bit stratificash and don't want to do something
- 25:53Speaker 3: too homemade, but want to go purchase something, but you
- 25:56Speaker 3: can't think of anything in your budget, Camart have real
- 26:00Speaker 3: great range of like candles and face masks and chocolates,
- 26:04Speaker 3: and you could put together a little hamper that would
- 26:06Speaker 3: cost you no more than ten or fifteen dollars, depending
- 26:09Speaker 3: on what you decided to put in it, and you
- 26:10Speaker 3: could write a really beautiful card about them looking after
- 26:13Speaker 3: themselves and having a night in or something like that.
- 26:16Speaker 3: And you've put together a few things that you think
- 26:18Speaker 3: they would really enjoy, and oh my gosh, I would
- 26:20Speaker 3: think that that present was literally the best.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Love that suggestion from you VD. But there were also
- 26:26Speaker 1: some excellent suggestions in the Facebook group you go Fast
- 26:30Speaker 1: with your fabs.
- 26:30Speaker 3: So last week in our community, Ebany posted a really
- 26:35Speaker 3: great post. She said, Hey, friends, is it too early
- 26:38Speaker 3: to talk about Christmas, I want to start a thread
- 26:40Speaker 3: of thrifty slash money saving ideas for Christmas presents. Please
- 26:44Speaker 3: share your tips below. And completely unsurprising, the first person
- 26:48Speaker 3: to comment was our very own Jessica Ricki, who didn't
- 26:51Speaker 3: contribute anything, but I came here to say it's never
- 26:54Speaker 3: too early for Christmas.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Go figure.
- 26:56Speaker 3: But there are more than one hundred and fifty different
- 26:59Speaker 3: ideas is on this thread, so go have a look.
- 27:02Speaker 3: I'm not going to read them all out right now,
- 27:04Speaker 3: but there were a few hot ones that I am
- 27:06Speaker 3: going to call out now. The first one was from Emma.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Emma said possibly controversial, No, my friend did. Absolutely isn't
- 27:12Speaker 3: because I have one hundred percent agree with you, But
- 27:15Speaker 3: don't go broke this Christmas. Consider regifting.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I love that idea.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Like, if you've been gifted a gift that you know
- 27:22Speaker 3: you're not going to use, but you know somebody else
- 27:24Speaker 3: will love, there is absolutely no shame in gifting that
- 27:28Speaker 3: to somebody else.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Oh absolutely not.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Like if you've got a cute little hand cream set
- 27:31Speaker 3: that you're like, I'm just not going to use this.
- 27:33Speaker 3: What a great little gift to pop in the cupboard
- 27:35Speaker 3: and use for someone you know would love that.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Actually, one ve that I feel like a lot of
- 27:40Speaker 1: people listening could probably relate to is when you get
- 27:43Speaker 1: gifted like a Kolsmeya voucher for your birthday or for
- 27:47Speaker 1: Christmas from like your grandma, and then you just swap
- 27:49Speaker 1: it with your mum and she gives you cash and
- 27:52Speaker 1: then you run. Did you ever do that?
- 27:54Speaker 3: No?
- 27:55Speaker 1: I never did that. Okay, just me, just you, babe.
- 27:58Speaker 3: But like that sounds like a very george thing to
- 28:01Speaker 3: do to want to hold a cash, So that makes
- 28:03Speaker 3: a lot of sense. Rice has said, we do Secret Center.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Instead of buying many presents for people for twenty dollars each,
- 28:10Speaker 3: for example, we buy one present for eighty to one
- 28:13Speaker 3: hundred dollars for one person. They get a good present
- 28:16Speaker 3: they're actually going to use, and we don't have to
- 28:18Speaker 3: buy a million different presents. So I think that is
- 28:21Speaker 3: absolutely genius. Someone else said, make use of sales like
- 28:25Speaker 3: the Black Friday sales to make sure that you're organized
- 28:28Speaker 3: and get the best deals on the presence and you're
- 28:30Speaker 3: already planning to buy. Sunshine has said op shops have
- 28:34Speaker 3: a look regifting as suggested above, but especially for those
- 28:38Speaker 3: secret Santa gifts or teacher type gifts. There are always
- 28:42Speaker 3: really cute pots that you can pop a plant in
- 28:46Speaker 3: and give as a gift, which I think is a
- 28:47Speaker 3: genius idea. Emma commented and said that she draws digital portraits,
- 28:53Speaker 3: which are pretty inexpensive and probably a genius idea that
- 28:56Speaker 3: can be mashed together with your idea, Georgia, have a
- 29:00Speaker 3: digital print made and pop it in a cute frame.
- 29:03Speaker 3: I would love that as a present, and it comes
- 29:05Speaker 3: across as really thoughtful because like, can you imagine the
- 29:08Speaker 3: thought process behind having to organize that and then pop
- 29:11Speaker 3: it in frame? I think that's just really really beautiful.
- 29:13Speaker 3: And I know obviously Emma's is in that thread, so
- 29:15Speaker 3: go check her out, but there are so many people
- 29:18Speaker 3: who do that on like Etsy, so you can find
- 29:21Speaker 3: someone who actually suits your budget and the style that
- 29:24Speaker 3: you're looking for. What a genius idea from Emma. I
- 29:27Speaker 3: love that genius. And the last one I'm going to
- 29:30Speaker 3: share with you, George, is from our friend Jordan. She said,
- 29:33Speaker 3: this year, I set out to do Christmas as cheap
- 29:35Speaker 3: as possible. Although really sorry, it's not going to help
- 29:38Speaker 3: you this year, but it'll help you next year.
- 29:40Speaker 1: So these tips are for next year.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Guys, Firstly, set up your Bullworth Everyday rewards to keep
- 29:45Speaker 3: for Christmas. That way you can spend it at big
- 29:48Speaker 3: w Bullies bws at Christmas time. Genius Flybys points are
- 29:52Speaker 3: a really great way to do that. Obviously, we're not
- 29:55Speaker 3: about tracking points and stuff that She's on the money,
- 29:58Speaker 3: but if you're going to be doing gross shopping, tapping
- 30:01Speaker 3: at the same time on things you were going to
- 30:04Speaker 3: already buy is really smart. So she said that she
- 30:07Speaker 3: now has about two hundred and sixty bucks to spend
- 30:10Speaker 3: come Christmas time. That's all her food and alcohol paid. Genius.
- 30:15Speaker 3: She said, Next, you shop back when shopping online and
- 30:18Speaker 3: refer friends to it as well. I have about six
- 30:21Speaker 3: hundred dollars sitting in there waiting for me to withdraw,
- 30:24Speaker 3: she said. I also have a referral code, so if
- 30:27Speaker 3: I send that to someone, we both get twenty bucks each.
- 30:30Speaker 1: How good is that?
- 30:31Speaker 3: Like, arguably that's better than using the She's on the
- 30:34Speaker 3: money discount code. Like I shouldn't be saying that, but like,
- 30:38Speaker 3: if you've got a mate that you know users shop back,
- 30:40Speaker 3: like why not ask them for that and start sharing
- 30:43Speaker 3: it with each other?
- 30:44Speaker 1: Genius?
- 30:45Speaker 3: She said, it's also great for keeping track of prices.
- 30:47Speaker 3: For example, if I wanted an iPhone twelve, I can
- 30:50Speaker 3: click on track price and get a notification if the
- 30:53Speaker 3: price has been lowered.
- 30:54Speaker 1: That's I didn't even know that was an option. Genius either,
- 30:58Speaker 1: That's brilliant.
- 30:59Speaker 3: And then she said, my last tip is to save
- 31:01Speaker 3: your cans and bottles and trade them in for cash
- 31:04Speaker 3: and keep it in a Christmas account. She said, now
- 31:07Speaker 3: I have around one thousand dollars spare for Christmas that
- 31:10Speaker 3: I wouldn't have had otherwise.
- 31:13Speaker 1: How genius is that? That is incredible. They only do
- 31:16Speaker 1: that in South Australia, though, don't they.
- 31:17Speaker 3: I know, I really wish we could do the cans
- 31:19Speaker 3: and bottles. But if you live in a state that
- 31:21Speaker 3: does it and you're not doing it already, please friends,
- 31:24Speaker 3: get on it.
- 31:25Speaker 1: I want to hear all about it. Well, it doesn't
- 31:27Speaker 1: sound like much, but then it adds up. It absolutely
- 31:29Speaker 1: adds up.
- 31:30Speaker 3: And I mean things like Flybys that you're going to
- 31:33Speaker 3: tap when you're going to the supermarket.
- 31:35Speaker 1: So Flybys is it Cole's and.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Then you've got the rewards points over at Woolworth's, Like
- 31:40Speaker 3: it just makes sense to tap these things. Because George
- 31:43Speaker 3: as you, and I know our friend Jessica Ricky, who
- 31:46Speaker 3: apparently this entire episode is about she should have been.
- 31:49Speaker 1: On the has been.
- 31:50Speaker 3: I know, like honestly, we'll see her on Friday, though.
- 31:53Speaker 1: It's all good.
- 31:54Speaker 3: She has been saving her Flybys points for ages and
- 31:57Speaker 3: she almost has enough in her little flybyst to swap
- 32:00Speaker 3: her points for KitchenAid stand mix up, which are usually
- 32:04Speaker 3: so expensive, and I know she can't wait for that,
- 32:06Speaker 3: so that's really exciting.
- 32:07Speaker 1: But it obviously does add up. So it does.
- 32:09Speaker 3: Benefit us to be always tapping and making sure that
- 32:12Speaker 3: we are making the most of every dollar we spend.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Yeah, amazing. Should we move back on to our last
- 32:18Speaker 1: four tips for the day VD.
- 32:19Speaker 3: I believe so, But I'm hoping that none of our
- 32:22Speaker 3: she's on the money friends had spoiled our last tips
- 32:25Speaker 3: cheeking because we thought long and hard about pulling those together.
- 32:28Speaker 1: All right, I'm not going to lie. V One of
- 32:31Speaker 1: them was a little bit spoiled, and that was to
- 32:34Speaker 1: implement Chris Kringles or secret Santas into your families and
- 32:38Speaker 1: friendship groups. It's a good tip. It's a good tip.
- 32:40Speaker 3: It's a great tip. It's classic tip. This one's existed
- 32:43Speaker 3: for a very long time, and I feel like not
- 32:45Speaker 3: in our family to do it, so gee, we do
- 32:48Speaker 3: Chris Kringle in our family and it has worked for
- 32:50Speaker 3: a number of years. I really like it. It takes
- 32:53Speaker 3: a lot of stress off. But on Steve's side of
- 32:56Speaker 3: the family, which I adore, we've overlaid rules on top
- 33:00Speaker 3: of that. G so the present has to be handmade,
- 33:02Speaker 3: homemade or second hand, and I think that that has
- 33:06Speaker 3: meant one it's a little bit harder to organize Christmas,
- 33:09Speaker 3: but two, it's just so economical. It's good for the environment,
- 33:12Speaker 3: it's good for our wallets. A couple of years ago,
- 33:15Speaker 3: we bought our niece and nephew a little kitchen off
- 33:17Speaker 3: of gum Tree, and it was like forty dollars and
- 33:20Speaker 3: it included all of the bells and whistles, like you know,
- 33:23Speaker 3: all those like tiny little pots and pans and plates
- 33:25Speaker 3: and like little fake fruits and stuff that they could
- 33:27Speaker 3: chop because they like velcrode together. It was so cool
- 33:30Speaker 3: and so cheap. But the kids have got literally so
- 33:34Speaker 3: much joy out of that present, and it cost us
- 33:36Speaker 3: forty bucks and they still use it to this day.
- 33:39Speaker 3: So I feel like a homemade handmaid or second hand
- 33:43Speaker 3: present is a really fun thing to do and perhaps
- 33:46Speaker 3: you guys could implement that in your families as well,
- 33:49Speaker 3: because everyone had a lot of fun working it out.
- 33:52Speaker 3: And I mean, obviously with the handmade element of that,
- 33:55Speaker 3: if you still want to buy a present, you can,
- 33:58Speaker 3: it just has to be a little bit more thoughtful,
- 34:01Speaker 3: which I really liked. And obviously there's a lot of
- 34:03Speaker 3: beautiful handmade candles and soaps and like I got a
- 34:06Speaker 3: little handmade like coin purse out of seagrass and it's
- 34:10Speaker 3: still in my handbag.
- 34:11Speaker 1: I love it.
- 34:11Speaker 3: So I feel like it's a really fun thing to
- 34:14Speaker 3: do at Christmas time and it makes it a little
- 34:16Speaker 3: bit more fun as well because we are so competitive
- 34:20Speaker 3: and we were just so excited to like find the
- 34:22Speaker 3: best secondhand thing, so it worked for us really well.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Love it. Okay, the next to PV is to choose
- 34:29Speaker 1: free Christmasy events instead of pricey dinners for your inevitable
- 34:34Speaker 1: pre Christmas catchups.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Genius. There's so much going on in the city of Melbourne,
- 34:40Speaker 3: whether it is lights or Christmas carols, like get to it.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Maybe you want to go for a walk with a friend,
- 34:46Speaker 3: grab a drink or have a little bit of a
- 34:48Speaker 3: picnic and then go past the famous Maya windows, or
- 34:51Speaker 3: what about going to the Christmas markets? Like I feel
- 34:53Speaker 3: like all of that is just so much fun. It
- 34:56Speaker 3: is so festive as well, instead of just like heading
- 34:58Speaker 3: out for dinner, which would be a normal dinner, but like,
- 35:01Speaker 3: why not grab a picnic rug and go to the
- 35:03Speaker 3: Carrols together?
- 35:04Speaker 1: Like is that not cute? I would think that's cute? Yeah, gorgeous.
- 35:08Speaker 1: I've always wanted to go to the Carrols. Maybe this
- 35:10Speaker 1: could be the year.
- 35:10Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, let's go to the Carrols.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Gee wholesome socialis Carrol.
- 35:15Speaker 3: I was gonna say they also do the day before
- 35:18Speaker 3: rehearsal that you can go to.
- 35:20Speaker 1: We could go, Genie, you're most famous enough v to
- 35:23Speaker 1: be invited up there on the stage with a little mic,
- 35:25Speaker 1: do some singing. Not a chance. Oh wear the dresses,
- 35:29Speaker 1: but I am not singing a little Donkey. I can
- 35:31Speaker 1: see you up there singing Little Donkey. Yeah, that's my favorite.
- 35:33Speaker 1: I like Carol. Do you know Little Donkey? Anyways? At night?
- 35:37Speaker 1: A classic classic choice ranger? Yeah, a banger? Oh well
- 35:43Speaker 1: for Christmas now that is the ultimate. Obviously a banger
- 35:47Speaker 1: that would be we'll chat more about that later. Our
- 35:50Speaker 1: second last tip for today is to rain in our
- 35:53Speaker 1: non essential spending during this time so that we can
- 35:56Speaker 1: funnel that extra cash towards Christmas. Obviously, this is a
- 36:00Speaker 1: smart idea. Talk us through it. It's a genius idea. I'm
- 36:02Speaker 1: glad you came up with us, Thanks so much. But
- 36:04Speaker 1: if you're too busy to go to.
- 36:06Speaker 3: The gym, why don't you freeze your membership over the
- 36:08Speaker 3: Christmas period and stash that cash away. It just feels
- 36:11Speaker 3: like a no brainer that I hadn't thought of. Also,
- 36:14Speaker 3: making sure that you're shopping at places like Audi or
- 36:16Speaker 3: the markets instead of supermarkets to make sure that you're
- 36:19Speaker 3: getting the best possible deal. I'm not going to suggest this,
- 36:22Speaker 3: but Georgia King has written down that you should consider
- 36:25Speaker 3: ditching your daily latte if that's in line with your values.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Do that. It is absolutely not in line with mine,
- 36:31Speaker 3: So Georgia, I will not be ditching my oat latte
- 36:34Speaker 3: for anything.
- 36:35Speaker 1: And then any non essential.
- 36:37Speaker 3: Spending you can cut out during this time. I think
- 36:40Speaker 3: it's also a really good time to have a little
- 36:42Speaker 3: bit of a think about what you are and aren't
- 36:45Speaker 3: spending on. So if budget is something you want to
- 36:47Speaker 3: get on top of actually sitting down and being like, well,
- 36:50Speaker 3: where is my money going?
- 36:51Speaker 1: What does that look like?
- 36:52Speaker 3: Because you can do a little bit of an audit,
- 36:54Speaker 3: and I bet you'll find some things that you're spending
- 36:56Speaker 3: money on that you're like, I don't need to do that.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Cut that out, and you a little bit more comfortable
- 37:01Speaker 3: with the way your money is blowing, especially during the
- 37:04Speaker 3: festive season.
- 37:05Speaker 1: Brilliant. Okay, let's move on to our twelfth and final
- 37:08Speaker 1: tip for today. Just before we get there, though, is
- 37:11Speaker 1: it twelve because like the twelve days of days of Christmas? Okay,
- 37:15Speaker 1: so that was the logic. Yeah, I did think twelve
- 37:17Speaker 1: was an obscure number when that was suggested.
- 37:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's why I came up with it. I
- 37:22Speaker 3: was like, the twelve days of Christmas, how about we
- 37:24Speaker 3: do twelve hacks or ideas to save you some cash?
- 37:26Speaker 1: Holder, Like, it just made sense. It makes sense. I'm glad.
- 37:29Speaker 1: I Finally, our twelfth tip B is to say no
- 37:35Speaker 1: full stop. I love this. Just say no. Just say
- 37:39Speaker 1: no to everything canceled, Chris. We're saying no to g
- 37:42Speaker 1: We're saying no to not every social event that's coming
- 37:48Speaker 1: your way. Over the next few weeks. But as we
- 37:50Speaker 1: all know, December and January as well, they are manic times.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Everyone always wants to catch up before christmast know why.
- 38:01Speaker 1: It's silly to me, but I feel like just saying
- 38:04Speaker 1: no to the events that you don't want to go
- 38:05Speaker 1: to is completely fine and it's going to save you
- 38:08Speaker 1: money and I'm on board for it, so just don't
- 38:11Speaker 1: feel obliged.
- 38:12Speaker 3: I feel like it's smart as well. I feel like,
- 38:14Speaker 3: given we, especially here in Victoria, have been in lockdown
- 38:17Speaker 3: for so long, it's going to be really socially exhausting
- 38:21Speaker 3: for us as well. Like I'm not used to socializing
- 38:24Speaker 3: as much as I used to, and that is very valid.
- 38:26Speaker 3: The amount of exhaustion I would experience going out for
- 38:29Speaker 3: a lot of Christmas drinks, I feel like it's going
- 38:32Speaker 3: to really take it out of me. So I think
- 38:33Speaker 3: we need to remember to put ourselves first. But it's
- 38:36Speaker 3: a really nice thing to say, thank you so much,
- 38:39Speaker 3: but no, thank you, well, thank you so much, but
- 38:41Speaker 3: can we do this after. I feel like during Christmas,
- 38:44Speaker 3: a very good get out of jail free card is like,
- 38:46Speaker 3: oh my gosh, I'm so busy. I'd love to catch
- 38:49Speaker 3: up with you when I have more time to just
- 38:51Speaker 3: enjoy hanging out with you, and people go, oh my gosh,
- 38:54Speaker 3: so nice of you to think that way, and you've
- 38:56Speaker 3: gotten out of that situation of having to go out
- 38:58Speaker 3: and having to spend that much without even having to
- 39:01Speaker 3: have the conversation. You're just like, oh my gosh, gee,
- 39:03Speaker 3: I'm just so busy during December. Do you think we
- 39:05Speaker 3: could push that to next year so that we can
- 39:07Speaker 3: actually have a really nice time out and not feel
- 39:09Speaker 3: like we're overwhelmed. Like if any friend said that to me,
- 39:12Speaker 3: I'd be like, oh yeah, girl, Like, let's do it.
- 39:14Speaker 1: For sure, for sure. Yeah, So just don't feel that pressure.
- 39:17Speaker 3: So with that, g I feel like we're done here.
- 39:20Speaker 3: Those were the twelve ideas and hacks that we have
- 39:22Speaker 3: to save you money this festive season.
- 39:25Speaker 1: If you have any more.
- 39:26Speaker 3: That you think we absolutely need to hear, please pop
- 39:29Speaker 3: them in the thread that we are going to have
- 39:31Speaker 3: today in the Facebook group. There's obviously already been one
- 39:34Speaker 3: we just discussed it, but we're going to have a
- 39:36Speaker 3: new one because I adore talking about Christmas, Jess is
- 39:39Speaker 3: obsessed with Christmas, and George is pretty okay like a
- 39:42Speaker 3: topic as well.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you're like, it's what. It sounds like, a
- 39:46Speaker 1: good idea. Get to have a drink. You like the snacks.
- 39:49Speaker 1: I love the snacks. I'm excited to try this Christmas
- 39:52Speaker 1: crack you speak of.
- 39:53Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, I promise this time I will not
- 39:57Speaker 3: set my kitchen on fire like I did the time
- 40:00Speaker 3: we made vodka pasta.
- 40:01Speaker 1: Oh I missed that, but I'll have search that up.
- 40:04Speaker 1: You know what, the I'll send you the pictures. Life
- 40:06Speaker 1: sounds good, sounds good. All right, that's all we have
- 40:09Speaker 1: time for today, guys.
- 40:10Speaker 3: But just before we head off, we'd like to acknowledge
- 40:12Speaker 3: and pay respect to Australia's Aboriginal and Torris Straight islander peoples,
- 40:16Speaker 3: the traditional custodians of the lands, the waterways and the
- 40:19Speaker 3: skies all across Australia. We thank you for sharing and
- 40:23Speaker 3: the caring for the land on.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Which we are able to learn.
- 40:26Speaker 3: We pay respects to elders past and present, and we
- 40:29Speaker 3: share our friendship and our kindness.
- 40:31Speaker 1: And remember, guys, that the advice shared on She's on
