Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to the Life Podcast.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Pull up a chair, get comfortable, and take a deep breath with me.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: I'm Dr.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: C, and today we are talking about something so many of us struggle with.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Yet it's entirely essential for our wellness.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: We're talking about looking in the rearview mirror without letting it steer the car.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: We are talking about grace.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: As someone who has lived through the beautiful, messy chapters of personal life, I know how heavy the past can feel.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: And recently I've been reflecting deeply on my own journey.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: And I realize something profound.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: I honor the lessons of my past, every single one of them.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: The relationships, both personal and professional, that shaped me.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: I am profoundly grateful for what they taught me.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: There is no resentment, no regrets, only clarity.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: But getting to this point requires a vital tool, reflection.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: I recently returned from a professional training seminar, and the facilitator shared a concept about the critical space that exists between our actions and our reflections.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: That space is where the magic happens.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: When we intentionally practice reflection, we create the opportunity to evolve, which, as you know, is the pinnacle of the life blueprint.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: But here's the catch.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: You cannot properly reflect if you are constantly beating yourself up.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: We are so quick to give grace to our friends, our colleagues, and our family when they stumble.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Yet when we look at our own missteps, we bring out the gavel and the judge's robe.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Why do we withhold the very grace from ourselves that we so freely give to the world?
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: To truly heal and build your pathway to progress, we have to flip that script.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: And science backs this up.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: If you are looking to actively improve your wellness strategy today, I want to introduce you to the framework of self-compassion, pioneered by Dr.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Neff.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: In her foundational clinical research published in the Journal of Personality, Dr.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Neff identifies that treating ourselves with the same kindness we show others is not just feel-good advice.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: It is a measurable psychological mechanism that significantly lowers burnout, anxiety, and chronic exhaustion.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Dr.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Neff's strategy has three core components you can apply right now.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: First, self-kindness versus self-judgment.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: When you look back at a closed chapter, instead of criticizing yourself for what went wrong, actively speak to yourself like you would a dear friend.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Identify your strengths and opportunities for growth.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Second, common humanity.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Recognize that making mistakes, experiencing failure, and getting hurt are shared human experiences.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: You are not immune.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: They will happen and you will grow from them.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: And the third core component of the self-compassion framework is mindfulness.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Observe your negative emotions, without suppressing them, but also without over-identifying with them.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Acknowledge the pain of the past, but do not let it define your present identity.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: When you apply this framework, when you finally give yourself grace, you unlock what psychologists call a growth mindset.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: As Dr.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Dweck's extensive research at Stanford University shows, a growth mindset thrives on the belief that our capacities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and consistency.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: A growth mindset is the gift that keeps on giving.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: It tells you that your past mistakes were not permanent character flaws, but vital data points for your evolution.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: It allows you to say, I am moving forward with a full heart, clear boundaries, and a deep, deep appreciation for the life I continue to build.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: So, friend, give yourself some grace today.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: You are doing the best you can, and your evolution is a beautiful thing to witness.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Thank you for spending these few minutes with me.
