Transcript
- 0:00During this last week, I've had so much uncertainty and busyness because I've moved house.
- 0:04At times I wanted to give up.
- 0:06So I kept reminding myself, small consistent steps, rest and begin again.
- 0:12But feel like my head was saying bullshit in response because I was so tired and cranky.
- 0:17How do you stick to the teachings and apply them even when the ego is trying to undermine them?
- 0:23Thank you for the question.
- 0:23So my answer to that would be the ego will always undermine whatever is present or the present moment.
- 0:33So he's always trying to keep us in the comfort zone even though this is not comfortable being tired and cranky.
- 0:40In other words, it'll try and keep you away from change basically.
- 0:45In this instance, the answer I would give is, you know, if you're exhausted, if you're tired, you just need rest.
- 0:55Like the body just needs sleep.
- 0:58Sometimes I just find that that's what you've just got to do.
- 1:02Like you've just got to respond to that and, you know, use up that time that you've got.
- 1:07Because maybe the thing that you're doing, you know, is a certain stint of time, a short stint of time.
- 1:15And you know it's going to be a few days or a week or a few weeks, right?
- 1:19So whatever the thing is that we're doing.
- 1:21And you know that like, okay, I'm just exhausted.
- 1:25I can't do anything else but rest and take care of this thing, this project, this task.
- 1:32And so in that case, then you just have to give yourself what you need, right?
- 1:36So it goes back to the basic needs of like food and sleep, hydration.
- 1:43And I find personally for me, it's difficult to function when I've not had enough sleep.
- 1:51And I'm sure there's enough studies now that give us the proof, right?
- 1:56The scientific proof that not having slept enough, it's like trying to operate with a
- 2:01brain that is drunk, right?
- 2:04it's like difficult to focus it's difficult to make any decisions live alone live alone empowering
- 2:10decisions so it's hard to function and you kind of just have to take care of that first
- 2:17also the other part of it is sometimes you know you can go through a stint of
- 2:21personally I'll speak for myself I can go through a stint of like less sleep for a little while
- 2:27and just you know push through the project or the task and then I know on the other end of it
- 2:34more rest like I'll make up for it and actually catch up and give my body what it needs so I think
- 2:40there is no shortcut to sleep if you need sleep then you need sleep the body needs sleep then you
- 2:47just have to give it that there is no kind of like techniques around that meditation certainly helps
- 2:55I've had the experience I think I've shared with you guys that was a period when I was meditating
- 3:00you know two hours and then I went up to like four hours and because of our meditations we go
- 3:07into theta brainwave what I found was four hours of sleep and four hours of meditation
- 3:12seemed to work for a period of time I wasn't trying to sleep less I wasn't trying to prove
- 3:17anything it literally was like 2 30 to like 4 30 in the morning I would be up and I'm like okay
- 3:25what should i do now so i would just sit and meditate and my body you know would drop into
- 3:32deep rest but again i wouldn't recommend that as a replacement for sleep like i don't think you know
- 3:40you should replace sleep with meditation because sleep is sleep like you need it the body just goes
- 3:46goes through its rest and digest functions you know it's healing functions the brain needs it
- 3:51like the body just needs it so you just have to give it that but I think as far as like you know
- 3:57if you're asking about teachings and how do you keep the ego in check the ego is always going to
- 4:02do its job and I want to say it's going to keep us in our comfort zone but actually the the comfort
- 4:09zone is what's uncomfortable you know sometimes short term a lot of times long term it's
- 4:14uncomfortable because it keeps us away from the change that we want to make the goals that we're
- 4:21It keeps us in not just comfort zone, but away from the change.
- 4:28Like it keeps us away from making a change in our lives.
- 4:31So in this instance, you know, you're talking about moving homes.
- 4:34Obviously, it's a big change.
- 4:36It's going to try and fight everything and put things in the way, like obstacles in the way.
- 4:42So it's just kind of how it functions.
- 4:44We know it well.
- 4:45so you know i think after you've got given yourself enough sleep then the next part of it is
- 4:53then i'd look to the practices you know it's like even if you can afford a few minutes of meditation
- 4:59a few minutes of practice that's going to make a difference right so clarity of mind just being in
- 5:06a much more kind of calmer peaceful state probably you know you're going to have to make lots of
- 5:10little decisions as you're doing your moving and also the body's going to be probably exhausted
- 5:17and stiff and tired so it's going to feel good to stretch and sometimes the thing that seems
- 5:24counterproductive like a bit of rest you know or going for a walk or having the meal having the
- 5:31extra you know whatever minutes or hour of sleep we don't give ourselves that and then we actually
- 5:38pay the price we suffer you know we're less productive it's difficult to be productive because
- 5:43like i said before like you know the brain is kind of drunk because it hasn't had enough sleep
- 5:50so we're trying to function with like half a brain you know and make things happen which is even
- 5:55harder so that would be my answer to that i don't know if there's any kind of detail there that i'm
- 6:00missing it seemed like a pretty straightforward question so that would be my answer to that
- 6:05I think it's okay to you know fall off the wagon to sometimes you know you're doing a stint that
- 6:13you're just going to have to you know shift things around a little bit during that stint
- 6:19until you get through it get past it then you can go back to your routines and as far as like
- 6:26falling off routines you know we all fall off our routines we all fall off the routines are there
- 6:32just as a foundation you know a solid foundation underneath us so that for me it feels like you
- 6:40know when the days get crazy it's like the ground underneath me is moving like quicksand you know
- 6:45and the practices the yoga meditation in our case gives me that foundation underneath so that
- 6:52i it feels like i'm standing on solid ground not quicksand as i move through the day metaphorically
- 6:57speaking of course so you know it's not a thing it's not another beating stick you know that we
- 7:03use to punish ourselves like i didn't do the thing it's like it's okay like we all fall off the thing
- 7:08the practice just get back on just start again and you know if it's been a while then you're
- 7:14gonna have to start back maybe with smaller increments right like smaller amounts and then
- 7:19increase it little by little which i find is a good way to create a habit you know we're coming
- 7:24up into new year soon in a couple of weeks most of us are busy with christmas so we haven't even
- 7:30thought about new year yet but new year is coming and around about this time we get into you know
- 7:37our goals and intentions for the year and we start again and we want to get into certain habits
- 7:44and i found an effective way to create habits or get back into good habits is to start small
- 7:51you know rather than get up off your couch and run a marathon in one day and then give up
- 7:58because it didn't work it's better actually just to go for a walk around the block a little jog
- 8:03and then slowly increase it you know so just like that with the meditation and the practice
- 8:08if you're restarting if you're starting again then start with small increments and then increase it
- 8:13little by little because that way rather than punishing yourself you can actually just reward
- 8:21yourself like wow i did five minutes and today i did seven minutes and today i did nine minutes
- 8:27or ten minutes you know and little by little you can start to increase it as you hit kind of little
- 8:33plateaus you can stay you know let it shift and then keep increasing that limit the ceiling
- 8:39and therefore the growth right like the expansion that we experience in in our routines and the
- 8:46routines are only there as much as to create this foundation to allow us to be in a centered
- 8:51calm powerful present place within ourselves so that we can actually move through the day
- 8:58and whatever the day brings us you know and the challenges that it throws us
- 9:02we're able to handle it from a much more centered power powerful place within so there you go
