- 0:04Welcome to the libido lounge where we focus on all things love, lust, and libido.
- 0:09We believe that fabulous sex is important to health as exercise and good Hey everybody,
- 0:16Doctor.
- 0:16Diane, your libido doc here.
- 0:17Welcome back to another episode of the lounge.
- 0:21Today, we're talking about a really important topic, shame and libido.
- 0:27I wanna talk about this today because I actually posted a YouTube video on this topic
- 0:31about a year ago, and I got a lot of comments.
- 0:34I got a lot of people reaching out to me on this topic, so I figured it would be a good one
- 0:39to dive in even further.
- 0:41I wanna remind you all that before we get started, you could always go take my libido
- 0:46quiz at libidoquiz.com.
- 0:49That's where you can have a free quiz that will help you understand and diagnose the likely
- 0:55root causes of your libido imbalances.
- 0:59So the first part is a research based quiz.
- 1:01The second part is something that I developed with a programmer after years and years of
- 1:05study.
- 1:06So really good practical information.
- 1:08You'll get to ideas on the root cause of your libido imbalances, as well as solutions and
- 1:15strategies and tips to follow that are specifically designed for your quiz answers.
- 1:20So moving on to today's topic, shame and libido.
- 1:25This is a really important topic because there's so much sexual and intimacy type of
- 1:32shame that happens in our society for so many different reasons.
- 1:37So I wanna just, before we go deeper, take a moment to say shame and libido issues sometimes
- 1:44come from things like trauma, assault, abuse.
- 1:47So if any of that has happened and you don't feel like you have processed that, definitely
- 1:52consider turning this off, going and talking with a mental health therapist, and really
- 1:56getting support for that.
- 1:58There's many different reasons why we have shame with with libido, shame with intimacy.
- 2:03This can go from anything from sexual trauma to body image issues, to things that have been
- 2:10told to us through religion and society and parents and teachers and friends and colleagues
- 2:15and lovers over the years.
- 2:18You know, so many women, for example, have shame around their own genitals, their own
- 2:23vulva and vagina because they've been told they it should look different.
- 2:28It should smell different.
- 2:29We have all of these things that are constantly being blasted to us as women or women around
- 2:35how it should look, douching for how it should smell, which I do not recommend.
- 2:39It really destroys those good bacteria that actually help the vagina stay healthy, prevent
- 2:46it against disease, and actually helps so much with that vaginal tone and well-being.
- 2:51So stay away from those chemical types of douches.
- 2:54They're definitely very, very, very dangerous.
- 2:57But the point is we get the the shame from so many different ways.
- 3:01Sometimes it can be a lover telling us something in bed that was harmful for us.
- 3:07Sometimes it's just a lover saying something in bed that they meant something that was kind,
- 3:12and we took it the wrong way.
- 3:13We got triggered.
- 3:15I know for me, I actually am a survivor of sexual assault.
- 3:19And for me, I had a lot of shame around my body, and my anatomy, and my vulva, and vagina
- 3:27because for so long, I had this strange and this horrible association from that trauma.
- 3:34So there's so many different reasons we get shame in our body.
- 3:37Now one of the things that came up when I had posted this information on YouTube, somebody
- 3:43had responded in a comment and said something along the lines of that that shame actually had
- 3:49a purpose.
- 3:50And they were saying, hey.
- 3:51We shouldn't get rid of shame because shame has a purpose.
- 3:54So I wanna take a moment and address that because, really, when it comes down to
- 3:58feelings, feelings are in many ways flags of something going on.
- 4:04So if I say something mean to somebody, for example, and I feel ashamed of what I said
- 4:11afterwards, that is information that is telling me that, oh, that's not very nice to say
- 4:16something mean.
- 4:17It doesn't feel good.
- 4:17I don't wanna hurt others.
- 4:19So from that standpoint, some of that shame feeling could be looked at in that scenario's
- 4:25information and feedback of a behavior that I did that I don't wanna repeat.
- 4:32That's not the shame I'm talking about here.
- 4:34Right?
- 4:35The shame I'm talking about here is shame because of something that happened in our lives
- 4:41that is making us feel unnecessarily bad and unnecessarily guilty and unnecessarily wrong
- 4:48about who we are as human beings and about our sexuality.
- 4:53And that's the biggest thing.
- 4:54And and there's so many things from a subconscious level.
- 4:58Like, I love working on the subconscious, and there's so many things on a subconscious level
- 5:03that can be related to shame.
- 5:05Right?
- 5:06It can be related to what we were told as a child about self pleasure.
- 5:10Right?
- 5:11It could be could be because of what a friend said to us about the fact that maybe we were
- 5:17more promiscuous than them.
- 5:19Right?
- 5:19It could be the fact that we were a virgin until we got married and we got made fun of for
- 5:23that.
- 5:24Right?
- 5:24There could be so many different reasons for people making fun of us or people giving us a
- 5:30hard time about our choices, and that leading to a sense of shame even on a subconscious
- 5:36level.
- 5:36Because one of the things that can happen is when we have trauma, and the shame I'm talking
- 5:42about oftentimes creates these microtraumas.
- 5:45Microtraumas have been studied a decent amount in in children and in looking at how some of
- 5:52these microtraumas actually play out long term in depression and anxiety and mental health
- 5:59disorders.
- 6:00And it's very, very clear these microtraumas that so many of us have.
- 6:03In fact, pretty much all of us have microtraumas, and they they impact us.
- 6:08Right?
- 6:08And they get into us on a subconscious level because these micro microtraumas, what will
- 6:12happen is let's say we had some sort of reason why we got shamed around our sexuality.
- 6:19And if we got shamed around our sexuality, our nervous system actually holds that memory.
- 6:25Right?
- 6:25And so if anything is said even at later years, like, how these microtraumas work, they're like
- 6:31PTSD on a on a way.
- 6:33So it's like if anything gets said to us later on, that on a subconscious level kind of brings
- 6:38that feeling of shame, kind of brings that feeling of guilt, kind of brings that feeling
- 6:43like we're doing something wrong, it can actually trigger those microtraumas that come
- 6:49up.
- 6:49And when it's coming you know, when it comes to intimacy, when it comes to deeply connecting
- 6:53with our partner in the bedroom, right, when it comes to these moments, when it comes to the
- 6:58ability to experience pleasure, when it comes to self pleasure, when it comes to all these
- 7:04things regarding our sexuality, one of the things that can happen is these microtraumas
- 7:11wind up getting in our nervous system, our subconscious.
- 7:14And if somebody says something similar that from a subconscious level is reminding us even
- 7:19in the tiniest way of that event we felt shame around, we might actually cut off blood flow.
- 7:26We might cut off nervous system connection.
- 7:29This is where sometimes people dissociate during sex.
- 7:32So I talk a lot about on this podcast when you listen to other episodes about the ability of
- 7:37the woman's brain to multitask.
- 7:39So it's not unusual, right, for a woman's brain because of all the ways the blood flows to the
- 7:45different, you know, craters of the brain.
- 7:47It's not unusual for women to have moments where they're leaving the present moment with
- 7:52their lover and their mind goes someplace else, Right?
- 7:55To the list or to the kids or those sorts of things.
- 7:58That that's fairly normal from a standpoint of how the female brain is set up and we have to
- 8:03practice bringing it to the moment.
- 8:06However, one thing that that you should be aware of and one thing to watch out for is
- 8:10almost like a dissociation where you're you're so unpresent from the moment every time you are
- 8:16engaged intimately.
- 8:18And sometimes if they're you're feeling like you're dissociating, your mind is constantly
- 8:22wandering.
- 8:23I'm not talking about these small wandering, but if it's like, wow, this is just really hard
- 8:27to focus on being here with my partner, that can be a huge sign of subconscious microtrauma
- 8:34happening and perhaps shame.
- 8:36Right?
- 8:37And so we always want to, again, I'm gonna emphasize this again because this is, you know,
- 8:41not a I am not a clinical therapist.
- 8:43This is not also the place for clinical therapy, even if I was.
- 8:48This is education.
- 8:50Right?
- 8:50So I wanna always emphasize that, hey, if you're exploring these microtraumas, make sure
- 8:55you have a therapist.
- 8:56Make sure you have somebody that you can really deeply work with.
- 9:00But one of the things that I've seen to really help to repair microtraumas in these, you know,
- 9:06scenarios, especially when we are talking about microtraumas, we're not talking about major
- 9:11assaults and those sorts of things, right, is to begin to do more exploratory work around how
- 9:18do we actually feel about sex?
- 9:21Like, if I ask you right now, how do you feel about sex?
- 9:25How do you feel about, you know, confidence with sex?
- 9:28How do you feel when you're you're touched?
- 9:31Does it feel good?
- 9:31How do you feel about pleasure?
- 9:32If I ask you, like, how do you feel?
- 9:34Do you feel like it's safe?
- 9:35Do you feel like it's bad?
- 9:37Do you feel, like, guilty around pleasure?
- 9:39Do you feel like it's against some sort of belief?
- 9:42And what we're doing with exercises like this, we're really working to say, hey.
- 9:48Are there any sort of mental, emotional types of blocks that are actually limiting you from
- 9:55enjoying the depths of your sexuality, the depths of pleasure?
- 10:00You know, I truly believe that pleasure is this gift that we have as humans because human life
- 10:06is hard.
- 10:07Right?
- 10:07Human life has stressors.
- 10:09Nobody gets out of that.
- 10:11Everybody has good days and bad days, and sometimes we have bad day after bad day after
- 10:15bad day.
- 10:16And it just feels like, gosh, we're just getting hit over the head.
- 10:20Pleasure is one of the things that I personally believe as humans that we are given as a gift
- 10:26to actually help us counteract and stay balanced through those hard times.
- 10:31Right?
- 10:32And so the idea of being able to deeply connect more and more to our pleasure body is about
- 10:37staying balanced.
- 10:37It's about releasing chemicals that are actually helping us to stay healthy and happy
- 10:43and reduce stress while we go through the craziness of the ups and downs of life because
- 10:48we never know every day.
- 10:50Every day is a mystery.
- 10:51Right?
- 10:51And we get up, and sometimes it's like we think it's a good day, and it's gonna be a really
- 10:55hard day.
- 10:56And pleasure's one of the ways we stay balanced during those challenging times.
- 11:01And so what we're doing with some of these exercises and saying, like, how do you feel
- 11:05innately about pleasure?
- 11:07Do you feel guilty about the concept of pleasure?
- 11:09I know a lot of people that do, and there's so much charge around this stuff oftentimes.
- 11:15So what we're doing here is we're starting to unwind and starting to try to get into the
- 11:20subconscious to say, how do you really deeply feel about the concept of pleasure, about the
- 11:25concept of of sex, about the concept of, you know, of really deeply connecting physically,
- 11:31intimately with your partner, with yourself.
- 11:35And so once we begin to entangle that, once you begin to, you know, to see that, oftentimes
- 11:41then we can see, like, you know, a question to ask yourself is, do you actually feel like you
- 11:46have any shame around the concept of sex?
- 11:50Do you feel like you have any shame around the concept of intimacy?
- 11:53And have a journal and really write this out because it's amazing sometimes what comes up.
- 11:58And then once you do that, the reason we're doing this is because we're trying to get down
- 12:02to those subconscious things that are connecting to emotions, that are preventing you
- 12:08from deeply connecting to yourself, deeply connecting to your partner, and deeply
- 12:12experiencing the pleasure that we get to have as human beings.
- 12:17So in how to do this, once you begin to understand some of these ways that perhaps your
- 12:24mind and your subconscious are working And like I said, definitely recommend doing this through
- 12:28through, you know, introspection, journal activities, set some time aside from this.
- 12:34Then the question to really ask is, okay.
- 12:37Well, if my subconscious has the story from childhood that sex is something to be shamed
- 12:44about or self pleasure something to have shame about, do I really actually believe that as an
- 12:51adult?
- 12:51And do you really?
- 12:52And if you really do, it might be a good thing to go get therapeutic, you know, some
- 12:57therapeutic work done, so you or EMDR.
- 12:59There's a lot of different types of programs that help us process those things.
- 13:03But sometimes when we do these exercises, one of the hue huge things that I find is that we
- 13:10can actually see that for many people, we can change that shame because as an adult, it's
- 13:17almost like we're running this, like, this program, these stories, this subconscious thing
- 13:22from a childhood or from, you know, teenage years from old stuff, old patterns.
- 13:27And, actually, the thing that happens as an adult is we start to realize, like, well, I
- 13:32don't actually even believe that anymore, but somehow I still have that story that's running
- 13:37in my subconscious.
- 13:39So we can ask ourselves, like, do we actually believe that sex is something to be shamed, you
- 13:43know, feel shameful around?
- 13:45And if we don't, then it's like, what do we actually want to believe?
- 13:48What do we actually do believe about sex, about pleasure, about intimacy?
- 13:52And then what we wanna do is we wanna start to rewrite those old neural programs.
- 13:58And we do this through visualization.
- 14:00We do this through meditation.
- 14:02We also do this through the experience of pleasure.
- 14:05And even simple things like experiencing pleasure with a partner, with ourselves, and
- 14:11throughout that experience or even throughout or that orgasm, that moment of orgasm.
- 14:15But if, you know, if you don't get to orgasm, it doesn't matter.
- 14:17You can still do this just by experiencing pleasure.
- 14:20And almost like, you know, looking into your partner's eyes or touching yourself lovingly
- 14:25and repeating something that is more like a healthy thing to say around like, wow.
- 14:30I am worthy of this pleasure.
- 14:33I deserve this pleasure.
- 14:36This pleasure keeps me balanced.
- 14:37I'm so grateful to, you know, whatever you believe in, you know, God, spirit, universe,
- 14:43like, whatever whatever you believe in.
- 14:45I'm so grateful for the ability to bring myself into balance by experiencing this pleasure.
- 14:51And if we say that while we're in the heart and the height of that pleasure experience and
- 14:57combining those things, oftentimes will help the nervous system reprogram so that over time,
- 15:03then we don't have those childhood stories around shame.
- 15:06And instead, we have these new programs around, oh, yeah.
- 15:11Pleasure is this gift that is given to me that I deeply get to enjoy as a human being.
- 15:16And not only do I get deeply get to enjoy, pleasure is this gift that I get to use to
- 15:22balance my stress, to raise my happy hormones, to help me sleep better, to enjoy life and
- 15:28community and my partner better, to be able to show up to my work from a more passionate
- 15:33place.
- 15:34Right?
- 15:35That's what we get out of pleasure.
- 15:37So I hope this was helpful.
- 15:39I do wanna I'm gonna put in the show notes for you guys too.
- 15:41I have a very low price program called Hack Your Mind.
- 15:45Hack your mind, we go through in how to reprogram thoughts, beliefs, emotions.
- 15:50I have a thirty day challenge in there with it.
- 15:53So it's a very small activity you do for five minutes a day for thirty days.
- 15:58And I've seen some really good results with this over a decade and a half of work around
- 16:04helping people reprogram some of those subconscious beliefs.
- 16:07So it's a step by step guide plus this thirty day challenge.
- 16:11It does not take you much time to really get you on a program to help you repattern this.
- 16:16So I'm gonna put that in the show notes as well for you guys so you have that.
- 16:20Alright, everybody.
- 16:21It's been a pleasure.
