- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hello and welcome to the Aligned Actor Podcast.
- 0:03I'm Amy Schloerb,
- 0:03your friendly fellow actor and mindfulness and mindset coach.
- 0:07And this is the podcast where I share all kinds of practical
- 0:11mindfulness tools and
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: mindset shifts to help us all thrive in our full
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: lives.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Because actor life is a roller coaster, friends.
- 0:20It is full of ups and downs,
- 0:21twists and turns,
- 0:22and sometimes there are full-on loop-de-loops.
- 0:25And the only way that we will survive in this profession
- 0:31long-term is if we care
- 0:33for ourselves and find effective ways to handle all of that
- 0:37stress that the
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: entertainment industry loves to throw our way.
- 0:43It is my firm belief that mindfulness is a tool that can be
- 0:46used like a balm for
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: pretty much any challenge that comes our way as actors.
- 0:53And one of my goals with my work at The Aligned Actor is to
- 0:56demystify mindfulness
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: and make it as simple and as accessible as possible for you.
- 1:02So to that end,
- 1:04we are starting a new series here on The Aligned Actor Podcast.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: In this series we are going to do a deep deep dive on mindfulness because
- 1:14mindfulness has the power to completely transform you as both
- 1:18an actor and a human
- 1:20being and it will transform your approach to your craft and
- 1:25your career from
- 1:26calming your nerves to remaining fully present in a scene to
- 1:30increasing your
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: emotional intelligence and range to perhaps most importantly
- 1:35Allowing you to handle anything that the entertainment industry
- 1:39throws at you
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: without burning out.
- 1:42Because the entertainment industry regularly wreaks havoc on
- 1:46our nervous systems.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Work is unpredictable.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: We have to stay ready for auditions at a moment's notice,
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: and sometimes it's slow for no apparent reason.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Rejection is a cultural norm.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: So whether it's an audition that we didn't book,
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: or our series getting cancelled,
- 2:06or the fact that the Academy keeps nominating and giving awards
- 2:10to those other
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: guys,
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: this business is not a meritocracy.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: So you can be an incredibly talented,
- 2:18established actor and still face work instability and rejection
- 2:24regularly.
- 2:25And all of that has the potential to leave you questioning,
- 2:29am I good enough?
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Our confidence,
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: our sense of self,
- 2:34and our very identity as actors is continuously threatened and
- 2:37can be harmed by all
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: of this uncertainty and rejection.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: And all of that is just baked into the life of an actor.
- 2:46So no matter how well we intellectualize and understand ideas
- 2:50like,
- 2:51you can't book every job.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Book the room, not the job.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Avails are a sign that you're so close.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: They just went in another direction.
- 3:02We are still human beings in human bodies regularly facing
- 3:07uncertainty and rejection.
- 3:09And all of that takes a toll on our nervous system and can
- 3:13trigger very real,
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: very primal survival reactions within us.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Because for our cave-dwelling ancestors, rejection literally meant death.
- 3:27To be turned away by your group meant you were on your own to
- 3:30deal with finding
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: food and staying safe from all those predators that wanted to eat you.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: And our brains haven't evolved all that much since those days,
- 3:39so there are still parts of our brains that still perceive any
- 3:43form of rejection
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: and uncertainty as a threat to our very survival.
- 3:50Additionally,
- 3:50for us as actors,
- 3:52the professional uncertainty and rejection that we face
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: is tied to our survival because we need money to survive.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: So slow times,
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: dry spells,
- 4:03and changes in the entertainment industry all threaten our
- 4:06survival within this
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: profession.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Sure,
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: we can have day jobs and we can have other sources of income,
- 4:13but there's still a very real threat to our identity as actors
- 4:17because so many of
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: us still hold this belief,
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: even if it's an unconscious belief,
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: but this belief that
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: If I'm not making my living from acting, I'm not really an actor.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: But hope is not lost, friends.
- 4:34Just because the entertainment industry wreaks havoc on our
- 4:37nervous systems doesn't
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: mean we just have to take it.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Mindfulness has been around for thousands and thousands of years,
- 4:47and it offers scientifically proven ways to soothe and fortify
- 4:51our nervous systems.
- 4:53It can act like a balm for all the challenges of actor life
- 4:59Mindfulness can help us
- 5:00soothe the stress response triggered by uncertainty and
- 5:05rejection Mindfulness can
- 5:07help us sit with and get comfortable with all the uncomfortable
- 5:12feelings that arise
- 5:14in this rollercoaster of a career Mindfulness can help us
- 5:18recognize that thoughts
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: like
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: I'm not really an actor if I can't make my living from acting.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: It's just a thought.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And we get to decide whether or not we choose to believe it.
- 5:30Mindfulness can help us stay focused on why we chose this
- 5:34career in the first place.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Our love of acting.
- 5:38And our deep desire to tell stories and play characters and
- 5:43impact an audience.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And so much more.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: But wait, there's more.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: So
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: In this series, we are going to learn and practice mindfulness together.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: We're going to learn what mindfulness is.
- 5:58We're going to let go of common misconceptions about
- 6:00mindfulness that often get in
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: the way of starting or sticking with a practice.
- 6:06We're going to break mindfulness down into its micro steps so
- 6:10that you can really
- 6:11understand what's going on in a formal mindfulness meditation
- 6:14and completely
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: demystify the process for yourself.
- 6:19We're going to put a simple story to your mindfulness practice
- 6:22because as actors,
- 6:24we love stories and human beings actually understand things far
- 6:28better through
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: story.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: And we're going to talk about all of the many,
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: many,
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: many,
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: many,
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: many benefits of mindfulness for actors.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And we're going to practice mindfulness a lot,
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: like a lot,
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: a lot,
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: so that you can learn by actually doing.
- 6:49and we're going to start right now by defining and practicing
- 6:53mindfulness.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Surprise!
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: We're jumping right in.
- 6:59So the way I define mindfulness is that mindfulness is a
- 7:02special way of paying
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: attention to the present moment with kind curiosity.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: So let's just take a second and do that together now.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Tune in to whatever is happening in your present moment
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: with curiosity and kindness.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: So where are you?
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: What are you doing?
- 7:27What,
- 7:28if anything,
- 7:29do you see or hear or feel on your skin or smell around you or
- 7:39even taste?
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Just take a moment to notice.
- 7:50Before I asked you to tune into your present moment,
- 7:52were you off somewhere else?
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Were you maybe off in the future or the past?
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Just gently notice.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: There's no right or wrong answer here.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Just remember that mindfulness is a judgment-free zone of kind curiosity.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: And that's it.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: That's mindfulness.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: It's simple.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's way simpler than you were thinking,
- 8:22because there's unfortunately a lot of misconceptions about
- 8:24mindfulness that get in
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: the way,
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: which we're going to talk about in a future episode.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: But for now, stay here.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: In this present moment,
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: with this simple definition of mindfulness,
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: paying attention to the present moment with kind curiosity.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Which is exactly what we are going to practice in the next episode.
- 8:49So thank you so much for joining me if you found this content
