- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: What is happening, ladies and gentlemen?
- 0:01[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome back to another episode of the SportsCard CEO.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: Your favorite sports card CEO, host Matt Hammers back in the house.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_02]: After last week, being in Disney and boys, I gotta say I'm mischievous.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_02]: a 47-D season and a season of life in the other and naturely baseball history from one of the Koenia Junior.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_02]: There's a drive right on the Man of Heaven, the Man of Heaven, the Man of Heaven, a season that he is having.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_02]: He hits the strong hard, he hits the man of the left, my truck, that's right to go wrong.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_02]: What's up guys, my truck and listen to Sports Park CEO,
- 1:01[SPEAKER_03]: I missed you too, we missed you too.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_03]: We missed you too.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, is your favorite Disney character?
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: My favorite Disney character?
- 1:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, no, Mickey D'Amouse.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: I love Pete.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: I love Pete.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: He's the pirate guy that was in like the first Mickey.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: You never seen, but I love Pete.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: And I love Goofy.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: Gosh.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: Hi, Eric.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: I'm brainwashed voice.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: I've been in Disney way too long.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: But we had a great time with the family.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: And I got to say, I listened in the last week's episode.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: the joke about ham not being kosher was actually really funny.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: And so, me?
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: No, there was a joke.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, are you ham current for the weekend?
- 1:39[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, and he said, well, I'm sorry, ham's not kosher.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_00]: So, hopefully, hopefully, I'm kosher for the podcast.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_03]: That's what you thought was funny of all things.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_03]: I thought of all things.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_03]: All in things that show is not the joke.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: We got what I say, a tonney, a tonney.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_03]: A tonney.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it definitely was it was fun for me to sit on the outskirts and watch you boys and be a part from from afar, but I'm glad to be back and glad to be back with our listeners.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: And as we always do, kicking off the episode with the roundtable, I'll start off today and then we'll go to current and then close with Baba.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: The hamhouse just got back from a whirlwind seven days in Disney for those who have experienced it isn't it is an experience unlike any other So we have a lot of recovering to do one of my boys had a watch on that was tracking his steps I think we averaged like 10 miles a day for the three days We were in the park but it was good, you know It's one of those things.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's weird when you're in the middle of it It's so stressful and so demanding on your energy and emotion
- 2:43[SPEAKER_00]: But then when you look back and you're on the airplane you're like dang it like it's gone like it already happened And so I had this moment on the airplane coming back as little Matt and I came back early And I'm like emotional on the airplane I'm like this is the last time I'm gonna have my six-year-old on my shoulders You know the name like walking through a theme park.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway a lot of nostalgia a lot of good memories good experiences as far as the the card front goes for hamhouse
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: We're pivoting a little bit.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: We've got some new business endeavors that Hamhouse Sports has engaged in.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll unveil that at a later date, but it's been nice to kind of breathe a little bit.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: Right now we have the most PC that we've ever had, but we don't have anything we really want to sell.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: So it's just kind of odd.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: We're kind of stale right now on the Hamhouse front, just sitting on some nice PC cards and keeping our eyes and ears ready for what's next.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_04]: Kim House is anything but still right now.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_04]: That's a false statement.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: Well, very active.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_00]: Very active, just in a different way.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_03]: I actually had this like, um, I don't want to say it was a dream, but it was like a day during my guess.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_03]: So picturing you may add Disney in the park.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_03]: I think we're running around, walking around, swaying your ass off, and all the kids asking for something.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_03]: And you're just like being like a camp counselor, like, come on kids gather in like, we're gonna go get snow cones.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I don't know why I had this as like hilarious.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: Did you have a video?
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: Did you have a videographer following me around?
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: Cause that's pretty much what I was like.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty much what you had.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_04]: When Curms said, I had a daydream about you.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_04]: But it made me think about pre-episode again, but today's pre-episode.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_04]: A few listeners would have been there.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_04]: That's kind of what it sounded like.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, Karen talked to me what's been going on with my New York connection over the last week and a half since I hadn't seen you well in the in the Disney card world.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I've just a lot of Dumball a lot of I've been doing some rough thing, recently, everything, John Allen and Genter actually, which is kind of like a little refreshing because You know, you get back in the tire case of Allen and Genter hobby.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_03]: for the same price is like a 24-draft super jumbo, right?
- 4:52[SPEAKER_03]: And like think about how quick that super jumbo is over.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_03]: And now it gets, it's like, yeah, it's like that.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_03]: And now it gets, it's a fun rip, it's long.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_03]: It takes a while.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_03]: So it's like enjoyable to not like immediately lose your money.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_03]: You know, like keeping your body over the course of like a few hours as opposed to two minutes.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: So if you hit the the Cow Ripkins in the ANG, just go ahead and send me to your boy down here.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: Cause I also heard you talk in a little trash about my Cow Ripkin collection on the last time.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_03]: I was in trash.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_03]: I was just saying that you were, you know, driving the market.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_03]: But as on the card front, it's supposed to riffing.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_03]: I haven't been doing a ton of buying.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_03]: I bought a, um, another, uh,
- 5:30[SPEAKER_03]: Jostlar Bread.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_03]: Jostlar Gonzalez Bread.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_03]: I actually sold a super recently.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_03]: It sold the civilian ping it super, which was recently acquired.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_03]: But you know, when you sometimes going to get an offer that would be irresponsible to not take, you got to take it.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_03]: It's just part of the game, you know, if you can double up real quick, why not?
- 5:52[SPEAKER_04]: Man, this show has made airy, manual control.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_03]: Seriously.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_04]: A much sharper shark out there, folks.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_04]: He is now a shark.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: He's dumping mats.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: Like what is the world come to?
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: He's dumping mats.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_03]: There's no emotion to this, right?
- 6:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_03]: There's no emotion.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_03]: I am actually a machete.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_03]: A machete.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_03]: And I have no emotion size to any cards.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_03]: You're then other than my three king's cards of Caminera and Jerry, you know, of course.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: You're refined, Eric.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: You're refined, you're refined, man, to a current.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_03]: Other than that, not a whole lot, man.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_03]: Just trying to close out the, close out the year here in the office strong.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's, I got busy two weeks ahead of me.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_03]: And next week, I have a, oh, something for Jerry to do these.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_03]: So I hope that that will not come to fruition.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_03]: And I don't have to say.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_04]: So are you going to film live from the jury,
- 6:41[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, that would be awesome.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_03]: That would be awesome.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_03]: You guys like them?
- 6:44[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe you'll be on a real serial killer's case.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_04]: I, um, Mr. Show Hay at Tane Baba.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_04]: Baba Tane is as up tomorrow.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_04]: That's why I'm wicked loose boys.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_04]: My brain, my body, my soul for the last three and a half years has been tied to the cell of a business.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_04]: You know, so the business has been a part of that journey and that journey officially ends tomorrow.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_04]: By the time that this episode airs live, the journey will be done.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_04]: And the wires will have hit the banks, the papers will be signed.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_04]: And the cards will be bought.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_04]: And the cards will be bought.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_04]: But I will officially be done with that.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_04]: And just really thankful that I was able to experience this.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_04]: I've learned a lot, learned what not to do, what to do.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_04]: But I just, um, I don't know without being emotional and crying on air.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_04]: I think this is a time of year anyway, to kind of be thankful and think about where you've been.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_04]: That's got what this week's been for me.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_04]: I've just really just got my mind.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_04]: I feel like my mind's clear as it has been in a long time.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_04]: So feel, feel really good about a lot of stuff on that front and that's that's huge personal news for me.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, really quick.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: And I know this is the business that, you know, you've been a part of for 20 what 20 years, 25 years?
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, 18 years old.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: So so you had an initial sale of the business and then you kind of stayed on.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, transition.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I just kind of laid out.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I sold the business.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_04]: It's a little over three and a half years goes March of 20.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_04]: I guess what year would that be.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_04]: to.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe March is 22.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_04]: Sold the business to a private equity firm at a Texas.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_04]: And when I did, I didn't want to sell my business.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_04]: My business was booming.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_04]: I had great employees.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_04]: I loved what I was doing.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_04]: They came along.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_04]: It said, look, we don't just want to buy your business and you're done.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_04]: We want to buy your business.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_04]: You stay along.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_04]: You still own part of this business and we take it nationwide.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_04]: So I did that.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_04]: I did that with a good friend of mine who's also in the industry, we combined our businesses at the closing almost four years ago and we've taken that business and grown at six times the size it was in less than four years.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_04]: And so it's been like I said, I've learned a lot.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I come from a small business world, own in my own business.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_04]: We were very laid back in my board room to very stiff board rooms, right?
- 8:58[SPEAKER_04]: I've seen all of it now and I can just say I shout out to my people to every one of them that believed in me.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_04]: And that fought for me.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_04]: I then went to battle for me huge thank you to any of you guys that are listening There's some of y'all do listen to the show, and you know, and this world anybody that owns a business You can't do it all and the second that you think you can you'll find out you can't You got to have great people and I'm I'm thankful to those people today for sure But I know y'all didn't tune in to data listen to that
- 9:26[SPEAKER_04]: Well, congrats, buddy.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_04]: You guys are big deal.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, thankful for that.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_04]: Feel very thankful.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_04]: Like I said, I'm a little bit like buzzed to be honest on that front.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_04]: So on the card side, that signifies tremendous buying because once a man is a little more cash flow on the pocket, he's got to do something with it.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah, I will just say, there are no bounds.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_04]: There are no limits to this buyer.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_04]: I'm glad you're never in bars.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: Watch out, every card.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that is exciting stuff, but we'll congrats, man.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's good to be back with you boys, David, in here.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: So as we jump into the episode today, I want to kind of throw a little bit of a nugget news out there for those who have been listening to this report, Part C. You know, we have a...
- 10:07[SPEAKER_00]: love hate relationship with our friends over at professional sports authentication uh PSA and it's no surprise to those who have listened that these boys on this podcast have called out some of the nonsense that is now getting national attention.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: in the sports card hobby.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: One Eric Mandelkern specifically, a few episodes back, said something about the buyback program with PSA and being able to regrade cards.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_00]: Bubba shares not about PSA as well.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: So boys, with with the news that has now been
- 10:42[SPEAKER_00]: becoming widespread that PSA is potentially involved in the regrading of Bobcat cards and the lack of accountability to that process of what say you gentlemen as how this affects the hobby.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: Colonel, let you start.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, first off, we saw this a mile away.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_03]: It was written like if you didn't see it, you're naive because once you start mixing all this stuff together, it was inevitable.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, bybacks,
- 11:10[SPEAKER_03]: regrading by the by bags by the people that are grading the card and can regrade the card to increase it that increase and valued they are driving the market they are driving the prices in the markets they can control it all now so it comes as no surprise to me as far as it affects the hobby and the future I mean look I don't I haven't thought long and hard about it but
- 11:32[SPEAKER_03]: I don't really see how it does affect anything moving forward other than it affects PSA's brand, but at the end of the day, we talk about this all the time until somebody else steps in, it doesn't matter and they know that.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_03]: It does not matter, but people that are going to want to cash out, they're going to cash out anyway.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_03]: Like, where are you, what are you doing?
- 11:51[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I mean, like, where else are you going?
- 11:53[SPEAKER_03]: I know there's repackers out there and all that, right?
- 11:56[SPEAKER_03]: But like nobody really makes it as easy as PSA in this system.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_03]: So what leg do you have to stand on?
- 12:01[SPEAKER_03]: None.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_03]: So I think it just, these are sour taste in people's mouths, but that doesn't really, it's, it's more, it's more like, so I, like, what are you going to do about it, right?
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you know, PSA is three letters, PSA, I are S, three letters.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_00]: We cannot like them.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: but it is what it is, right?
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I feel that way.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_00]: That's what it feels like.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: It is what it feels like.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, what are you going to do about it?
- 12:23[SPEAKER_00]: Chief.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_03]: Well, precisely, though, like, here's the book you're going to be about it.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_03]: I don't really see it affecting anything other than people just continuously ripping on PSA.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I don't, I don't know how else to affect anything.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know what they're doing is, what they're doing is not illegal, like, right?
- 12:40[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I don't know.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_03]: there's nothing like I don't see changing anything people we're going to cash out are going to cash out here there's nobody to argue with a bad your grade there's nobody to your hands your time yeah one thought before blah blah blah blah let's hear like a cash bear right now
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: to come out.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's interesting to me that PSA waves their tax fees and all that kind of stuff on the vaulted items, which significantly influence where the benefits someone who wants to vault their items with PSA and then therefore not have to deal with fees and taxes and all that kind of stuff, right?
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: And it's substantially financially beneficial to do it on how value cards, but what it does give them, it lets them know exactly where the cards are.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: especially when you get into low-pot rare cards.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_00]: Vultim with us, they said, we'll give you a discount on your taxes, they said, there's that card.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: We'll buy that back from you, they said.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_00]: And now we're going to regret it.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: And then like on a rare Michael Jordan insert, you could take a card that like is a $5,000 a PSA-9.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_00]: It might be $20,000 as a PSA-10.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: So you're talking about significantly affecting the upside.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: theirs.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_03]: They're probably not going to do that, right?
- 13:57[SPEAKER_03]: But there's no, it's not upside cards.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_00]: But on some of these cards, dude, when they know the population, when they know the rarity and scarcity of these cards, they control the market.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: And they're getting everybody to vault their cards with them.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: So they know where everything is.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: I'm telling you, bro, I've got a tin full hat on this one.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_01]: Bubba.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_04]: I could feel my heart
- 14:21[SPEAKER_04]: But you know what you're not going to do today, PSA, you're not going to take my buzz away.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_04]: You're not going to take my happiness away because I'm on cloud nine.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_04]: So, but what I am going to do is I'm going to make a very short case to any of our friends that listen, that have friends or maybe you work for the federal government.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_04]: And you work in the federal government anti trust department because that's what we have here my friends.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_04]: We have why it's created the anti trust is so that things like this monopolies can't take place and take over Complete industries, which is what PSA, hey again, it's a free business private business.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_04]: They're free to do what they want to do.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_04]: Smart to try to grow your business, try to come with new ideas to make more income streams, but I don't care what anybody says.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_04]: And I'll fight you this till the end.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_04]: And if you're one of the commenters on this huge post of the comments yesterday, I'd fight you to the end on this.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_04]: The problem with this is, is when you take, and you're saying that you have a grading scale that is meant from a true professional greater's eye, right?
- 15:18[SPEAKER_04]: I love PSA because they grade the best.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_04]: They're the hardest.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_04]: They're 55, 45 on centering.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_04]: They do it this.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_04]: They got the best graders.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_04]: It's the most this and that bullshit.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_04]: Because I'm calling bullshit when you grade somebody's cards and then you send them in that email where you're saying, sorry, by the way, we're sorry, we're just going to go ahead and change some of those nine's attempts now.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_04]: That to me and that common alone, they incriminated themselves from that point on anything else they could have done.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_04]: But when you offer cards, you just flat out gay fresh nines.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_04]: And because someone's nine, you're going to give them their mad, you're going to give them tens, there is no, in my opinion, there's no legitimacy to your grading.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_04]: And if there ever was, it is a game, it's been a game when you walk up to the national, and they say, oh, we're free grading up the national.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_04]: You know how much freaking money come out of the national grading, choosing the cards that they want to choose that they want to be in a PSA slab.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_04]: It has, I've to take in cards.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_04]: that were BGS-85s and got tens because they wanted that card in a 10 and they wanted to charge me 15 grand.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_04]: The Crooks?
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's bottom line.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm nothing else to say about it.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: I'm done.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: Fair enough.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: I think everybody knows the SportsCard CEOs stand on this and it's super interesting.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_00]: And again, we try to stay out of the hobby drama on the pod here, but this is something that you can't kind of turn a blonde out to.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_00]: I think we all have to be really aware of it.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, the episode today, we're going to focus on running a business and we're going to focus on, you know, a real approach to the sports card business as three different individuals of how we run our businesses within the sports card industry.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: Now that said, PSA's the player.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_00]: So if you're in the industry, you're gonna have to learn how to play with the player.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_00]: It just is what it is.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: And that's kind of where we are.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I'm thinking about the movie Scarface right now.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_00]: When Tony Montana, hey, goes, I have Frank, you know, he goes to Frank.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like, I'm replacing you.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, you don't go over my head.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, I just did.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: you know, it's like you have to understand.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this is the Wild West.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: If you have to understand who the players are, how the game is played, and then you have to build your business around kind of those rules of engagement.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, as that's what we've talked about on previous episodes and I were going to say it again, who creates the rules for this industry.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_04]: the only way that any of this probe steam, PSA, and you know how any of this means anything, that the industry as a whole says, you know what, we're not going to continue to do this.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_04]: But as long as everybody continues to slave out their money to PSA, and they continue to be nothing changes, as long as continue to people to continue to list where probes dean and buy from probes dean, nothing changes.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_04]: We just all continue to bitch and complain and mope, similar to a lot of people do with our government at times.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_04]: it's no different.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_04]: It's really, it's no different in this situation.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_04]: As a hobby, if you want to change, number one, somebody's going to step up.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_04]: We got to have a better option.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_04]: Right now there's not a better option.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_04]: But if there was, I think it would be really interesting to see if a new option came available, how that would be responded to.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_04]: Because I think people are finally starting to open their eyes that they didn't have them open previously.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_04]: that this is going on.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_00]: For sure.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_00]: All right, boys.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we'll close the chapter on the the conversation there and dive into kind of this idea.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's the end of the year current you mentioned it about your own business, right?
- 18:33[SPEAKER_00]: Bubble, you're wrapping up the sale of your business.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_00]: We're closing out the year at early Oak Insurance Group.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: If you're a business owner,
- 18:40[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the December timeframe is always that time frame where you're trying to wrap your year up, get everything, you know, on the books for the current year, and then you're starting to kind of strategize and plan for 2026.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_00]: What does it look like?
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, one of one of the things I think we do well with sports card CEO and why our listeners like us is we provide a real approach to the business side of the hobby from three guys who have been in business
- 19:10[SPEAKER_00]: And so we wanted to give them a little bit of that as how we approach our businesses kind of closing the year out into next year.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: So that being said, we compiled a bunch of listener questions, boys, and we're just going to kind of go go through this top to bottom and start addressing some kind of questions here.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_00]: So we get this question all the time.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's about insurance.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_00]: When you have valuable collections, how do you handle ensuring those collections?
- 19:35[SPEAKER_00]: Bubba has a story I know you want to share.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_00]: As someone in the insurance industry, I understand the importance of insurance.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you're trading off a small amount of money to cover a large type of risk.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_00]: For us, at Hamhouse Sports, we have a policy in place that covers us for a lost or damaged goods.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we've acted on it one time.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_00]: We lost up
- 19:57[SPEAKER_00]: package through UPS one time it got damaged and transit.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: It was about a $2,700 card.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_00]: We pay about $500 a year for our policy.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: And that specific case, they paid a 70% of the market value of that card minus our deductible.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: So we ended up getting about $1,500 back in a, at this juncture, that's the only time we've used.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_04]: Who do you use?
- 20:18[SPEAKER_04]: Who do you use?
- 20:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's through a group out of Ohio as a broker, but the company they put it through is a company called Mark Hill, which is a national insurer.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_04]: So your hands and think of mine?
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: Uh-huh.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_00]: That's the agency.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_00]: Which is interesting.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_00]: I actually have the opportunity to write my own policy, but again, it's kind of a niche industry that I don't
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: particularly deal with in our day today.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_00]: So I just kind of said, that's not something that I want to focus on, but yeah, that's the agency we use through a policy called Mark Hill.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_00]: But again, one little side note for those who have collections at your house, your card collection is not a part of your personal homeowners insurance policy period.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: If your house burns down in a house fire,
- 20:56[SPEAKER_00]: your homeowners and insurance company is not going to pay you anything for those collectibles.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_00]: So you have to have a specific collectibles or art policy to have any coverage on those those items.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_00]: So that's that's all I have on it.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_00]: Baba.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, first turn.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_04]: What do you have in place just for the listeners know what we all have kind of in place?
- 21:15[SPEAKER_04]: What do you have in place as far as the insurance on cards or do you have insurance?
- 21:19[SPEAKER_03]: I have insurance.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, it's through collecting sure.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_03]: I remember when I was looking for it.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_03]: I was looking.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_03]: I had a look long and hard.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I first looked under, you know, the my homeowner's policy and see if you'd be the other, you know, skilled under the scheduled, you know, the personal items, the jewelry, it's stuff like that, but they just want to cover it.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_03]: And so I was reaching out to like, you know, larger insurance companies and then somebody recommended collecting sure.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, they've been great.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_03]: It's, you know, I have to schedule certain items that I think over $25,000, so I'm constantly, but I have an entire policy for a big number, but I constantly am switching updating the in-pup the policy.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_03]: That's called sell as cards come in as, you know, as values change, you know, I try to update it as much as possible.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_03]: You know, the only thing that
- 22:03[SPEAKER_03]: with my policy for whatever reason that bothers me is I typically ship UPS the most part because my my my business account is 3PS and it doesn't cover UPS.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: Interesting.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it only covers FedEx and USPS and I'll never should USPS, you know, unless it's a, you know, a part through a day that's a low dollar amount.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_03]: But like, yeah, bothers me because I have to, you know, I think one thing that people, you know, don't really realize that I think when you have insurance, and you know, just because the policy covers it,
- 22:36[SPEAKER_03]: Especially with a bigger card, you got to play like extra safe.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_03]: No, you got to video yourself packing that card up, you're rolling into it and say a picture of the label, like just be extra safe, like have all that back up because I've been there before, you have to do that.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_03]: Like any time you're going to shoot a card up, you have to go ahead and collect.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_03]: to, you know, to sell or whatever they'll provide the label, they need all that information.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_03]: They need a video of yourself of you packing it up, of it packed up, everything, because the last thing you want to do is have a problem on your hands and not be able to cash in on, you know, the reason why you got the insurance in the first place.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to protect yourself.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, 100%.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think that's a good way to start here.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_04]: And I think the reason we're talking about this in the first place is a lot of people just don't know where to start.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_04]: So one of the main differences in my policy.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_04]: I also use Finkelmire out of Ohio and that's Mark L in the difference between our policy and it sounds like current is there is no limitation on UPS.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_04]: it's UPS or FedEx.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_04]: I have to have signature confirmation, which is what I would do anyway, but no USPS, which I don't use USPS anyway.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_04]: So that in another main difference is there's no scheduling of items with my policy.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_04]: Should the blanket coverage?
- 23:49[SPEAKER_04]: And unfortunately, I did have to use mine for a very large
- 23:54[SPEAKER_04]: situation in the neighborhood of around 150,000 or so dollars in loss of theft that happened at the National the National Ham you were actually there for that experience unfortunately and so was able to work through that with Mark Hill and they were phenomenal.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_04]: And resolving it.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, they I had a police report.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_04]: I went through it.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_04]: They did their due diligence and they handled it and they didn't drop me as a policy which is phenomenal.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I mean to have that kind of claim and not drop me, you know, there's been some thanks since then they've said, you know, we need this and we need this and that's been fine.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_04]: But my biggest reason in mentioning insurance in the first place, to anybody that doesn't have it, or it's thought about it, is when you go to ship stuff.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_04]: You're not getting it necessarily for yourself and losing.
- 24:36[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe you are, because you're worried about a house fire, or this for that, but you don't know who you can trust.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_04]: You know, you could ship it to a guy, so I'll guy the other day, we're sea of a card.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_04]: And the guy that sent it never even had a card in it.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, and all of a sudden, you buy XYZ card and there's no card.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_04]: You're out.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_04]: You're done.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_04]: You're screwed.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_04]: But that'll go into another topic we're talking about later of how you pay when you go to pay.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_04]: And in this industry, I don't think you can be too careful with having those types of things in place.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_04]: Making sure that you're protecting yourself and your assets because
- 25:06[SPEAKER_04]: You know, would you have your stocks or your money in a place where you had no repercussions?
- 25:13[SPEAKER_04]: You know, would you put your money in a bank that didn't have FDIC insurance?
- 25:17[SPEAKER_04]: Probably not, right?
- 25:18[SPEAKER_04]: If you had, you know, $100,000 in this bank and the bank goes under and you're out, would you be okay with that?
- 25:24[SPEAKER_04]: Most people would say no.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_04]: And so I don't think it's the thing is the same thing with cards.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_04]: I think a lot of people just take a lot of chances here.
- 25:31[UNKNOWN]: Good.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_04]: It only takes one or two things going the wrong way and you're hurting pretty bad.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's the thing, too, is you get, you get people starting out in the hobby and they move like we did from a $50 car to a $100 car to a $500 car and then all of a sudden you take the risk and you buy a $15 car, it's something goes wrong with that and that's a third of your overall asset.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_00]: You just lost a third of your assets in one bad transaction, you know what point in time do you start to implement this kind of stuff, you know, and we started to do it, you know,
- 26:01[SPEAKER_00]: And fortunately, we got to that point without any claims, you know, and again, if you're dealing in cards that are a hundred two hundred three hundred dollars, it's really not worth it because your deductibles probably going to be five hundred dollars on the policy like this.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_00]: But when you start dealing in significant four or five six figure cards, you absolutely should be wise and make sure that you have this as a part of your overall business plan.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_00]: So again, little thoughts on insurance.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_00]: There boys.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's super helpful.
- 26:29[SPEAKER_04]: So before we move to the next topic, I do want to mention this.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_04]: If you're new to this base, you're like, man, I don't know if I'm ready to go ahead and get an insurance.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know if I'm ready, but I've got some concerns.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_04]: Another little hack, and we didn't have this on our topic to mention today, but I utilize it still today, even though I don't have to, is using the vault.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_04]: Having a relationship with the vaults not only do you have the insurance protection now when you ship out of that to somebody else because they're shipping it and you're under their shipping insurance But you also have the protection of when they're storing it for you as well that through that vault.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_04]: but you also are avoiding taxes when you are buying it.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_04]: And that's something I wanted to mention, the use of vaults, because I don't think a lot of people utilize those maybe the way that they should.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_04]: There's a lot of bad things about a vault, too.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_04]: Timing sometimes when you really need a card in this in that, you need to have that relationship beyond point.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_04]: But vaults can be a very, very, very handy way.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_04]: to limit your exposure and having a bunch of cards sitting in a shoe box under your bed.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_04]: I know they get a lot of hate, but if you use a vault correctly, it can be a real good tool for people.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_04]: Just do your homework on who you're going to use, how you're going to use it, and be strategic with it.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_04]: But I mean, a vault can really be a good tool for someone that uses it correctly.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_04]: And in an alternative to insurance at the beginning.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, 100%.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_00]: All right, next next question.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_00]: Next topic here.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_00]: It was about how do you kind of market your personal collection?
- 27:53[SPEAKER_00]: Once you get cards, how do you put those cards kind of out there and market your collection current?
- 27:58[SPEAKER_00]: You've done a really good job of this of creating kind of an online brand in current's cards and I think you're going to be one to to dive right in and talk about this.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, everybody has their different style of marketing, their cards or themselves, like all three of us have a completely different strategy, you know, and, you know, there's no right or wrong here, right, like I think it all depends on
- 28:22[SPEAKER_03]: what space you're in, you know, what sport you're buying, what kind of card you're buying, how big are they?
- 28:27[SPEAKER_03]: You know, my strategy, I can speak for myself.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_03]: Obviously, I buy a lot of low number of cards and a lot of one of ones.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_03]: So my strategy from the get go was not necessarily to market them to sell them, to help sell them, but it was really to,
- 28:41[SPEAKER_03]: highlight them and Instagram, so I can buy them easier.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_03]: And if that doesn't make sense, it's really it's simple in that these these cards when they're hit, like you have to seek them out, right?
- 28:53[SPEAKER_03]: Like we talked about it before, like you can't just like, you can't just get everything you want by just throwing money.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_03]: It might be gone already, right?
- 28:58[SPEAKER_03]: Like there's people jumping on that stuff.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_03]: So it's a lot of work to seek those out.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_03]: And I want them to seek me out, right?
- 29:06[SPEAKER_03]: And that was the reason for putting my cards out there.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_03]: where I also understand the idea of, you know, kind of being secretive and holding something's back, right?
- 29:15[SPEAKER_03]: And not marketing them.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_03]: But in turn, by putting that stuff out there and having, like, it has worked, people come to me.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_03]: But it also, it obviously helps people knowing where something is, right?
- 29:26[SPEAKER_03]: Like, it doesn't mean you need to post something every day on your story saying it's for sale, right?
- 29:31[SPEAKER_03]: But like, I like putting it out there for knowing where it is.
- 29:35[SPEAKER_03]: Even if I'm not looking to sell a card, I might put it on, I might flash it on eBay for a two day period, just so somebody knows where it is, that might not have Instagram, right?
- 29:44[SPEAKER_03]: Like, if you, if you're marketed in a, in a way on, let's say Instagram, that's not, that's in an interesting way.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I try to do it with like, in a cool way, with highlights or with something different other than just like a still shot, right?
- 29:59[SPEAKER_03]: Like to make it intriguing.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_03]: is a still piece.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_03]: It's like can be a little boring to some people.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_03]: It's not like a game worn jersey, right?
- 30:09[SPEAKER_03]: Like where it has an entire story behind it or a moment behind it, right?
- 30:13[SPEAKER_03]: So you have to like, you know, with a card, you kind of have the story that you could tell is from
- 30:18[SPEAKER_03]: you know, when it's hit to acquiring it to grading it, right?
- 30:21[SPEAKER_03]: And like you put all that together, like to me, that's how you market card.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_03]: If it's, you know, if it's at all possible, but there's no right or wrong here.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_03]: It's just, you have to put it out there.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_03]: And I think you have to put it out there in someone of a creative way.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_00]: So my favorite way that my favorite way that you do it current, like I love when you post your cards in front of your Lamborghini, like that's what I love.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's really catchy and like you new flash em at the court side of the next games, like that to me is what really, I thought you were going to say when I line him up on the jet.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, all you jet right, there's the jet post as well.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's the jet and the Lambo.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_00]: So again, because we're poking fun at some of our friends on Instagram who like to do those types of things.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but also it's in that like this is a side note, but it is kind of goes with that of value market your cards like how you market yourself is just as big as how you market your cards like and a lot of people in this hobby hide themselves and they're just a logo, you know, of a Bowman logo or of whatever and like, look, like this is not a I'm not eating on it right like you guys have your look on the right now, but no, no, but like,
- 31:30[SPEAKER_03]: You guys put your face out there.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_03]: My point is it like you put your face out there and you're human being people buy from who they like and who they trust and they're more like you like you and trust you if you show your face right like there's a lot of people that just you have no idea who they are what they look like and that's
- 31:45[SPEAKER_03]: It's fine.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_03]: You want to remain private.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_03]: That's fine, right?
- 31:48[SPEAKER_03]: But I think a lot of that has to do with selling your car, just people are more open to dealing with you.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_03]: If you if you show your face and you show your human being and, you know, like it's just common sense.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_00]: I just pulled this up for a funny.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_00]: So when we were in New York this year, I actually took a picture because we flew in with our cards in hand and we went to Yankee Stadium and I've got a picture of our 53-manel at Yankee Stadium Like that was a cool thing and that's just an example of like you know kind of drip drip that out there But we say it's different like it's yeah, yeah, but what about you?
- 32:23[SPEAKER_00]: What about you?
- 32:24[SPEAKER_00]: How do you market your cars?
- 32:25[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I mean, I think that's where, you know, I think, you know, what current done it is extremely smart.
- 32:33[SPEAKER_04]: You know, it's, it's, it's current, you know, current is extremely active in the space.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_04]: Like I mentioned before, people see it as common easy.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_04]: It's not easy.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_04]: What current is done, the work, the money, the time, the effort he puts in it is a lot.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_04]: It's a lot of work.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_04]: It's not easy.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_04]: It takes time.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_04]: It takes commitment.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_04]: Honestly, from my standpoint, I don't know how to say this in a non-irrigate way, but I'm going to say it out the best way I know how I just didn't want to deal with the people.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_04]: I dealt with that day-to-day in my business and dealing with people and there's a lot of people in the space at waste of time.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_04]: And I'm professional.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_04]: I think for me, I kind of got into one day as like, you know, I just want to show people a little bit of what cards I have.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_04]: You know, a little bit when I first got into it, because I had some really, really big cards.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_04]: I think since then, the way Instagram has kind of worked for me is I don't go out there and market myself at all.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_04]: I've kept myself kind of, I think in it's kind of had honestly maybe prior to the show, I had a little mistake to who's this guy that's buying all this stuff.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_04]: you know who is this person now the problem with being in the last year being on the show and having a lot more recognition of who the Bowman farmer is at times can be problematic people in in your stuff in making it harder it's made it harder to buy honestly at times it's made it harder to sell and currently probably deal with a little bit of that at times as well.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_04]: I think there's a, there's a good, and there's a bad from being out there in the general public eye.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_04]: I've seen the good of it.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_04]: I've seen the bad of it, but my strategy along was never really a strategy.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_04]: It was just that, hey, I want to buy these cards.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_04]: I knew that I did, and I do not like selling.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_04]: I don't mind buying on Instagram.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_04]: I really don't because it's easier to buy generally.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_04]: I do not like selling this.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_04]: I don't like dealing with it.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_04]: I've done some story sales before.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_04]: It's a ton of questions.
- 34:16[SPEAKER_04]: And it's like a full-time job to get back to these people trying to sell online.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_04]: It just wasn't for me.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_04]: I would rather I went to designers and said, I'm gonna sell a lot, give me your best rate.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_04]: I'm gonna be one of your best customers, give me your most lenient terms.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_04]: I'm willing to give up 5%, you know, I'm willing to give up 4.2% of the sale because they're listing it, they're shipping it, they're they're doing everything and for me that was better.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_04]: I felt like I could get 100% of what the current value was on one of those platforms.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_04]: and then it's out of my hands.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_04]: And so that's been my strategy.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_04]: It wasn't really trying to hide and the less other than the fact that I really just didn't want to deal with flakes.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_04]: What has been positive since now, you kind of get a community of people that you know, people that you want to watch, people that you want to communicate with.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_04]: That is the positive in my opinion of an Instagram or social.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_04]: You meet a lot of great people.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_04]: I'm in a lot of great listeners.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_04]: A lot of a lot of great people in the space that I enjoy to communicate with.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_04]: If I hadn't have had an Instagram, if I hadn't put myself out there, I wouldn't have met those people.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_04]: And so I feel like it's just, there's both sides of it, but if you put yourself out there in current, I don't want to get in your own business here, but there's the other side where you deal with the crazies in this space.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_04]: And current, you've had an unfortunate deal with some of those.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_04]: It just, you know, there's a positive and a negative role of it, my opinion.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_04]: You've got to choose what fits you best in what you're trying to.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I want to add one, we'll fall on this, we'll move on to the next thing.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_00]: So ours is super interesting because my choice has been to market little met.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I mean, let's just be honest.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_00]: I've marketed at him, son.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_00]: Huh?
- 35:50[SPEAKER_03]: You can't get out of your shirt.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah, and he tells me all the time.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, you're pimping me out.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't say it like that, but he's like, you know, he has had, we've had serious conversations where he says he feels sometimes like I'm using him.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, dude, I'm not trying to use you, but like, let's be, let's be wise in this whole thing.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you have a unique personality, you have a unique gift set,
- 36:07[SPEAKER_00]: You are the face of Hamhouse Sports.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody cares about big men when I have to say about Cal Ripkin.
- 36:12[SPEAKER_00]: They want to see you interview and Gary Vee or Mike Mayhander.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_00]: They want to see you doing whatever you do.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_00]: So that's kind of been this thing.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_00]: And that wasn't how we started out.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_00]: It just became that way.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_00]: I started to recognize like, OK, this kid's got to get for this thing.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_00]: He's got to get for being on camera.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: And that started when he was five years old.
- 36:30[SPEAKER_00]: He loved to talk about college football.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_00]: So I put him on camera on Saturday mornings as a five-year-old, talking about the college football games of the day.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_00]: And so he had years and years in the pipeline, before we ever started Hamile Sports, and he was very natural to kind of come to cameras.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_00]: So for us, it's been more about marketing the brand of little Matt and Hamile Sports.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_00]: And that's been great for us.
- 36:51[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he won the entrepreneur of the year for Humbets Businesses, for our local Wilmington Business Journal.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_00]: He said ridiculous opportunities.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_00]: He's done very well, but the thing that I would say is is when you market yourself and your love for cards, people are going to bring you stuff.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_00]: We get more local people who go, hey man, I got to stuff in my closet, will you take a look at it, right?
- 37:14[SPEAKER_00]: Now we've gotten, I've got a box of 1988 tops right now that's a brick that won't move anywhere, but we also had two Michael Jordan rookies that came in the door.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_00]: So when you market yourself on your local personal social media pages, you start to get the people around you go up and it opens the door to opportunity.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_00]: So if you're not marketing yourself or your cards, I think it's a valid thing to consider as you move into 26.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_04]: Well, first off Matt, you do bring a lot more value to Ham House and that.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_04]: I think people do want to know Big Matt.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_04]: We see it with our own listeners on the show.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_04]: I know, you know, to your point when I first met you guys, the reason I even felt comfortable to kind of get to know you guys is that was a father's son.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_04]: I could see that.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_04]: you were easily approachable, and you're easily approachable, you kind of share some more things to me, that's how our friendship kind of sparked, was through Instagram.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_04]: And similar to Kern, I kind of knew who Kern was, but Kern's ability to network and have other people's how he and I met.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_04]: You know, it's through another network of people that said, oh, you and Kern are doing some stuff kind of similar.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_04]: So my point being to anybody that's thinking about this is if you're thinking about taking that leap, you know, there's more than one
- 38:24[SPEAKER_04]: You know, and I mean, and we all met though through the Instagram, essentially, at some point or another, you know, whether it was doing a connection of Instagram or through Instagram itself.
- 38:35[SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, I'm very, I mean, I spend a little bit of time on Instagram every day, and it's not a tremendous amount of time.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_04]: And generally, it's just to kind of sometimes even see, hey, what are these guys doing?
- 38:45[SPEAKER_04]: You know, I mean, it's not, I don't do that a ton of transactions by themselves.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_04]: It just don't must most of the stuff I'm looking for, unfortunately,
- 38:53[SPEAKER_04]: I had to dig for a little bit of fun to find it.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_00]: Moving on, fellas, here.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_00]: And this is good stuff.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_00]: I hope our listeners are appreciating this.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of just talking the guts of the business and how we approach it.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_00]: The next one is pricing and valuation.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_00]: And we're going to deal with this on two fronts.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like there's the accounting side of the business.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_00]: And then there's also the valuation of your assets.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm going to give it a little snapshot here for us to start it off.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_00]: I tend to be the analytical nerd of our house and little mad as the one who runs.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_00]: So I had to put a spreadsheet in place behind him to track what we bought, what we paid, what it was when we sold it, what our profit was, whatever.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_00]: So I have a spreadsheet
- 39:35[SPEAKER_00]: that is a running thing on the year, and I color coordinated each month.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_00]: So I can go back and look, this was January, this was February, this was March, this is total sales, this is net profit, whatever.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_00]: And I have all that for year-in, for tax purposes and accounting purposes.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's how we do it on the accounting side.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_00]: Just recently, we've learned about assets like card ladder,
- 39:58[SPEAKER_00]: PSA has a feature, Alt has a feature, where you can enter your cards in to these apps, and it shows you a real-time market valuation on that card, and that is incredibly helpful.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_00]: The problem for us is we move in and out of cards so quickly that you have to update that thing so often that it becomes a bit cumbersome.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_00]: So again, there's a lot of resources out there, but that's just kind of how we do it.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_00]: I also wish I could turn this thing around and show you guys.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_00]: I have a white board in our card room over the garage that is this like eight foot white board and it has hamhouse PC, little mats PC, top targets,
- 40:40[SPEAKER_00]: cash accounts, and it has everything on like a white board with like expo markers, and I literally update that thing like twice a week, and it's cathartic for me.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_00]: Like I love coming up here and just kind of like doodle in or whatever, so I can give you a real-time snapshot on the white board in the card room, and that's kind of a little thing that Matthew and I, it's like a little boardroom meeting, so that's something we do every week.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, I, I, I
- 41:06[SPEAKER_03]: I was feeling you guys do it a lot and the maths do it a lot cleaner than myself.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, as far as like my, you know,
- 41:16[SPEAKER_03]: profit cost basis like I keep a spreadsheet and Excel spreadsheet of the larger cards I would say of what my cost basis is and you know what it's sold for and what my profit is.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_03]: So like I can I can keep track of what my my profit is for the year along with the inventory of cards over a certain amount so I know how much an inventory I have.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_03]: I mean I typically don't keep track of
- 41:39[SPEAKER_03]: anything like, you know, from buying under, you know, 1,000 bucks or 2,000, really.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_03]: But anything above that, as far as like the value of my stuff, I don't really enter it into card later, although I know that stuff is available to you.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_03]: just because like a lot of the stuff my hire and stuff is are one of ones and if she person stuff so like there really is no card letter value assigned to it and if there was I don't really believe it because you know it's like how you figuring that out right they're not they're just not doing there's there's rarely a card letter value assigned so like current they're in a card letter going you're a liar yeah i just just it's rarely assigned so i i really just base it off of um
- 42:18[SPEAKER_03]: you know what I think the value is or where I want to sell it at.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_03]: But I do keep track with what the cost basis is and what my profit is and how much inventory I haven't.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_04]: Well I give you guys the roadmap of what not to do.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_04]: Okay because that's been me most of my card career.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_04]: On how to inventory the stuff and I can tell you this don't buy 5,000 cards that don't inventory any of it.
- 42:38[SPEAKER_04]: Okay because you won't like the result.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_04]: All right that's
- 42:40[SPEAKER_04]: that was me when I first got into the cards.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_04]: I've since then, yet a little smarter.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_04]: I know that I'm not organized in my friend current over here, by the way, is not either very creative guys.
- 42:49[SPEAKER_04]: We are not the most organized fellas in the room.
- 42:54[SPEAKER_04]: When it comes to this type of stuff, so I have hired somebody that works for me in this space, you know, what I do and his job is to keep me organized.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_04]: He ain't no shipping, because if I've since you have packaged,
- 43:06[SPEAKER_04]: that came from the Bowman Farmer, it would be not very, it would be a very pretty picture.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it would be like that.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_04]: So anyway, I mean, what we kind of track and I recommend that you do this, if you have your handle your cards, but it's the status.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_04]: When you get over having just a handful of cards at sometimes, that's one of the things we've done that I can get on there any time, and I can see the status and no where cards are.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_04]: It's ingrating.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_04]: It's a vault.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_04]: It's here.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_04]: It's there.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_04]: That's been helpful to me, having that.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_04]: not having that in the past.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_04]: You know, itemizing, I think a lot of times when people too when they're buying cards, they look at what they spent, but you do have other cost.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_04]: You know, you need to look and say, okay, what did I put in this engraving?
- 43:46[SPEAKER_04]: What did I have in selling cost here?
- 43:47[SPEAKER_04]: What did I have in shipping to get down to that net net?
- 43:51[SPEAKER_04]: And so, all of our stuff now, kind of accounts for that all the way down the line.
- 43:55[SPEAKER_04]: And then what I do is the guy that works for me on a monthly basis, it all flows to anything that was moved goes to a monthly breakdown.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_04]: And I know exactly what was sold.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_04]: And then the next month we kind of do a meeting a couple times a month.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_04]: And then to the end of the month, we do one big meeting.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_04]: And then we say, what are we targeting next month?
- 44:12[SPEAKER_04]: This is what we did.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_04]: This is how what we did well.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_04]: This is what we didn't do well.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_04]: This is what we're going to do next month.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_04]: And so since doing that, my life is so much better in buying cards and doing cards that way.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_04]: Again, when it goes to where just the, but with I'm buying it, Bowman Farmer PC, dude, there's not much organization to that, and that's not pretty.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_04]: So that's, that's my recommendation.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_03]: No, when you have to go to the store, or something, you've got to sell things.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_00]: Alright boys, moving on next topic here.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_00]: So talk a little bit.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk a little bit about, you know, cards as an alternate asset class.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_00]: And let's talk about cards as part of the financial portfolio.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_00]: You know, again, when you play golf as a hobby, you spend money on clubs and balls and t-times and, you know, all the stuff and you go and you play golf.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe you have a club membership or whatever.
- 45:14[SPEAKER_00]: But you're not making money doing that.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_00]: Most people are, you know, maybe you gamble on the course, you make a little bit back.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_00]: But it may be most people that have a hobby are not making money at their hobby.
- 45:24[SPEAKER_00]: That's why this, we call it a hobby, but it's a business because we're making money doing it.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's buying and selling all against the bud.
- 45:30[SPEAKER_00]: It's a hobby too, because it's fun.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_00]: So when you look at this as an overall investment strategy, part of your portfolio, how do you guys approach that within the context of, you know, management of assets?
- 45:41[SPEAKER_04]: y'all start.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_04]: I'll start here.
- 45:43[SPEAKER_04]: I don't look at as an asset at all.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_04]: I look at it now as a cash flow producing machine.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_04]: The only assets that I feel like I do own would be stuff that current and I are really buying together that are more longer holds.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_04]: That is more like an asset.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_04]: If we're buying a huge 101, it's been in a lot of money on it, that's an asset to me.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_04]: I'm looking at that more like a stock.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_04]: and saying, hey, currently I'm in the stock.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_04]: Some of them are high risk, high reward stock.
- 46:14[SPEAKER_04]: Some of them I don't feel are so high risk, but they maybe don't have the same reward.
- 46:18[SPEAKER_04]: Some of them I feel like are IBM type superfractors.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_04]: You can't lose type thing, right?
- 46:23[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, obviously you can't.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_04]: But that's how I look at that.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_04]: The stuff that I'm doing right now, though, in my day-to-day Bowman Farmer card business, is 100% like a distribution.
- 46:34[SPEAKER_04]: I like to look at it as like a, I'm buying this stock.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_04]: It has an ends to a mean.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_04]: It's gonna get sold and I'm gonna get distributed every month, the reap the rewards of what was sold and bought.
- 46:44[SPEAKER_04]: That is 100% how I look at it.
- 46:45[SPEAKER_04]: It's a 90 to 120 day window.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_04]: If I could sell it in two days and make that profit, I'm ecstatic.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_04]: If it takes me a 120, I'm like dang, I could have done flip that money five other times through.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_04]: I didn't use to think that way.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_04]: My boy Matthew Ham over here on the left has changed my brain the way that I think about that.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_04]: And to me, I think it's the safest way to play this game.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not telling you again, I share publicly my mistakes of selling to you early on Bobby with PCA and all these other guys.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_04]: But there's a lot of other stores I could tell you where I held guys too long in a loss my ass.
- 47:15[SPEAKER_04]: okay there's there's less there's less happy stories for holding people too long than holding them too long in my opinion and so I've become a lot more systematic.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_04]: I don't look at it as an asset unless it's huge and it's something I can look at as an asset.
- 47:30[SPEAKER_04]: Everything else to me I have no emotion to.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_04]: I'm like the Terminator like current the Terminator and I want to know one out.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_04]: I want to get in, I want to make it, I want to make money, and I want to move on.
- 47:39[SPEAKER_04]: Get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get in, get
- 47:52[SPEAKER_03]: closer to that way now, you know, like I completely agree with the way I see it with those longer term.
- 47:58[SPEAKER_03]: It was bigger cards.
- 47:59[SPEAKER_03]: Those longer term holds.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_03]: I see that as an asset for sure, like any one of one bigger larger dollar amount one of one.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_03]: But overall, like I never really thought about it as as like this is an asset to me.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_03]: It's kind of just I have in terms of like I can liquidate and
- 48:15[SPEAKER_03]: You know, become, you don't liquid any to, you know, through a most part, whatever you need.
- 48:20[SPEAKER_03]: So you're not happy to think about it as an asset, but as it asks this client of a class of itself, like it's not, it's not really the way I think about it.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_03]: I'm this kind of having fun here, like to maybe investment in doing this is really, you know, you mentioned the Gulf, the country club, right?
- 48:34[SPEAKER_03]: Like to me, the investment is, is the other relationships in the networks.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_03]: Got back into the community, like the opportunities that have come up because of me being in a hobby,
- 48:44[SPEAKER_03]: You know, wasn't really planned, you know, even invest your in collect media a couple of other things that can't discuss yet.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_03]: But it's just, it's been, like, it's worth it.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_03]: You know, like, joining a country club, a golf club, even if you don't play it, tell the golf, that it's a $200,000 a year investment, right?
- 49:02[SPEAKER_03]: Like, it might be worth it because the people that you meet there at the opportunities that I could lead to.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_03]: And so that's kind of like the way I'm thinking about it while I'm having fun buying and selling cards, you know, so that's kind of where I'm going.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I think to to courage point, I think you hit a great point, like I just, I got to say this because my dad told me this for so many years, my dad races race cars.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, my dad's 77 still racing cars and he's told me this so many times he said, do you know how many guys racing has doubled up and spit out?
- 49:32[SPEAKER_04]: and I'm like, when are you talking about?
- 49:33[SPEAKER_04]: He's like, dude, rich guys get into the sport all the time.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_04]: They got a lot of money.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_04]: They want to get into the front race of car.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_04]: They think it's cool.
- 49:39[SPEAKER_04]: And then they realize they're spending so much money.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_04]: Get into racing.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_04]: And my dad's always just done a very, very conservatively, very cheap car, very didn't work on it himself, done it the old school way.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_04]: Most of his guys have pit crew teams.
- 49:53[SPEAKER_04]: They've got the whole thing.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_04]: brand new hauler 500 grand and he said what happens is eventually a couple of years later you don't see those guys anymore and he's like well why not he's like because they look at themselves in the mirror and they go in my having a million dollars a year worth of fun I'm spending a million dollars a year half a million dollars a year am I having that much fun to me that's the coolest thing about the card market is making money is fun
- 50:15[SPEAKER_04]: when you're buying cards and you're right and you're selling them when you're making money is fun.
- 50:19[SPEAKER_04]: I could've been my own issue.
- 50:21[SPEAKER_04]: That is not good fun to go to the Country Club and spend that 200,000 and get your brains beat in every single time you're there and have your wife chew in your ass on the way home.
- 50:30[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, and cards are no different.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_04]: You want to be successful, you want to do well, we might all get into some breaks and lose some money and gamble a little bit and say, you know, whatever, that's just kind of fun part of the fun.
- 50:39[SPEAKER_04]: But if you're going to be in this long term, you're going to be in this beyond six months or a year, you can't learn how to make money.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_04]: Because I almost left this industry pretty quick, because it was chewing me up and sped my ass right back out.
- 50:51[SPEAKER_04]: And I had to learn to adjust and change.
- 50:54[SPEAKER_04]: And I think, currently, the same way.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, if you're going to be in this long term, you have got to learn to win.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_00]: So guys I have two thoughts here.
- 51:00[SPEAKER_00]: One is Gary you've made it well known on the podcast that you love land land is your asset class you like buying land a real estate you like that
- 51:10[SPEAKER_00]: I know they don't make a lot of land in New York City.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_00]: So when you talk about asset classes and stuff like that, like how do you think about it?
- 51:16[SPEAKER_00]: Is it investing in businesses?
- 51:18[SPEAKER_00]: Is it stocks or whatever?
- 51:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like how do you look at just investment in general?
- 51:21[SPEAKER_00]: I switch with thought process.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_03]: I mean real estate.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_03]: New York City.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_03]: New York City.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_03]: New York City.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_03]: But really real estate and, you know, be the digital investments.
- 51:31[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 51:32[SPEAKER_03]: What's your price?
- 51:33[SPEAKER_04]: I think it's just a curious, curious percentage for ham, earn, and myself.
- 51:37[SPEAKER_04]: Cards?
- 51:38[SPEAKER_04]: to real estate, privately owned businesses, to stocks.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_04]: Just quickly.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_04]: Let's just roll this real quickly.
- 51:44[SPEAKER_04]: What's the breakdown?
- 51:45[SPEAKER_04]: I'll start.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_00]: Less than 10.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_04]: Less than 10.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_00]: Well, less than 10.
- 51:49[SPEAKER_04]: Cards?
- 51:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_04]: What's your highest, five mostly stocks?
- 51:52[SPEAKER_04]: One case.
- 51:53[SPEAKER_04]: Well, that's the real estate asset.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_04]: Real estate assets.
- 51:56[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 51:56[SPEAKER_04]: Number one.
- 51:56[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah.
- 51:58[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, less than 10% Cards, see mostly stock, mostly stocks.
- 52:02[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 52:02[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, I'm less than 10% cards.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_04]: I was significantly and independent business, like how much value there was in my business.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_04]: Obviously a lot of that's now being pulled back out as it's been sold my net worth in that.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_04]: So now I'm probably, let's call it 65% in stocks and investments like that and then the rest the other balance of it 25 to 30s in real estate and land and stuff like that commercial real estate.
- 52:30[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's interesting because I had an opportunity to sit down with a gentleman here locally who is, again, one of the most recognized CEOs in the country and significant innovator in this space, in the tech space, and I was talking to him just as a friend, just talking a little bit about things.
- 52:49[SPEAKER_00]: And he started talking to me about investing in businesses.
- 52:52[SPEAKER_00]: and he was telling me about specific businesses that he put money into and he was talking about the return on his capital in the business.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_00]: And it was, it was crazy.
- 53:00[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, you know, startup companies.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I know there's a ton of risk there, but it was like 14, 15x upside, you know what I mean on these businesses.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_00]: And it was just like really fascinating to hear about his approach to that.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_00]: And with us in cards, it's like, okay, you double up on a card, you've won huge.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_00]: You make 40% 50% you've done really well.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_00]: And I think when you start thinking about stocks, if you can get 7, 8, 10, 12% you're happy, you know?
- 53:25[SPEAKER_00]: So when you start thinking about the diversification of your assets and all that type of stuff like love that conversation, and that's where I personally want to grow.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_00]: So it's looking at my own net worth now and how do I project it out?
- 53:37[SPEAKER_00]: Legacy stuff, we can get into that later.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_00]: I was just curious.
- 53:39[SPEAKER_00]: So I think you guys for sharing on that, on that front.
- 53:42[SPEAKER_00]: The other thing I want to say about this whole idea of your overall portfolio.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_00]: So many people get into the card.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_00]: business hobby and they just go and whatnot and they just buy and they just rip wax and they don't know what they're doing and they're getting into repacts and they're getting junk and they're spending thousands of dollars with no return and they don't understand how to capitalize on it and they get burnt and they get out of the hobby.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that's a dangerous kind of game to play.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what leaves a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_00]: And Gary, you've been said it.
- 54:11[SPEAKER_00]: It was something that you almost experienced previously.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think part of my heartbeat for this show is this educational piece to say, hey, listen, like you can still have fun in the hobby and do it and make money doing it.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a lot of people who have never even considered this strategy, you know what I mean?
- 54:25[SPEAKER_00]: They're looking at it.
- 54:27[SPEAKER_00]: They're looking at it like a country club membership.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to spend 1500 bucks here a month just just for the fun of it.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_03]: But you can actually have the hobbies grown in so many different ways, vertically, horizontally, right?
- 54:38[SPEAKER_03]: Like where there's so many different avenues, like there's people that consider breaking on whatnot, the hobby, like that's the hobby to them.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_03]: you know it being in breaks with the community and spending money with the specific breaker and then reselling the cart so we're holding on to them and not doing anything with them like they there's people that don't that it doesn't do it for them to collect what they want or buy what they want and you know like it just doesn't do it like or the hobby now is there's a certain part of the hobby that's just I break on one knot that's part of it yeah for sure and it's interesting when you start to see the new
- 55:11[SPEAKER_00]: verticals within the business.
- 55:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's something else that we can tap into in the future because there's a lot of opportunity and you find your niche, you find your area of expertise and then you maximize it.
- 55:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that's what I see from looking at other successful people in my life.
- 55:28[SPEAKER_00]: When I look at other successful, they found their niche, they found their thing and then they basically explored it.
- 55:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that's important.
- 55:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and I think that's a
- 55:37[SPEAKER_00]: of a success strategy.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_00]: So, guys, we're going to close out today's show with a rapid fire.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be, how do you pay?
- 55:44[SPEAKER_00]: Where do you buy and when do you sell?
- 55:46[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 55:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I just want to do a rapid fire on those three questions.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_00]: Kern will start with you, then we'll go to Bubba, then I'll close it out.
- 55:52[SPEAKER_00]: So, Kern, where do you buy mostly?
- 55:56[SPEAKER_00]: Probably.
- 55:57[SPEAKER_00]: Where's your second purchase?
- 55:58[SPEAKER_00]: He bet.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_00]: Bubba.
- 56:00[SPEAKER_00]: Where do you buy mostly?
- 56:01[SPEAKER_00]: He bet.
- 56:02[SPEAKER_00]: He bet number
- 56:04[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I don't have to say private right there.
- 56:06[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, fanatics being a third, the fanatics golden being an alt being like a long distance five.
- 56:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 56:11[SPEAKER_00]: So we buy mostly privately and the only time I'll buy on eBay is like older current can cards.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's just can't find privately.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 56:19[SPEAKER_00]: Number two, how do you pay current?
- 56:21[SPEAKER_03]: You really depends on the size of the card.
- 56:25[SPEAKER_03]: and the person I'm dealing with, but PayPal, Ryer, for the most part.
- 56:29[SPEAKER_03]: I tell all along there.
- 56:30[SPEAKER_03]: I don't do, I don't do Venmo.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_03]: Anything like that, because who limits and stuff, but PayPal, the dollar wire, just depends on the size of the card in whom dealing with.
- 56:38[SPEAKER_04]: Bye-bye.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_04]: So this was an important one for me.
- 56:40[SPEAKER_04]: I actually brought the stop pick up, and I'm gonna take a second to kind of tell you why.
- 56:44[SPEAKER_04]: PayPal is a mess.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_04]: Majority of the time.
- 56:46[SPEAKER_04]: Rapid, rapid fire, but it's a long, long, rapid fire here.
- 56:51[SPEAKER_04]: Paypal GNS.
- 56:52[SPEAKER_04]: You know why it goods and services?
- 56:54[SPEAKER_04]: Multiple reasons.
- 56:55[SPEAKER_04]: Number one, I don't want to have to worry about that tree.
- 56:58[SPEAKER_04]: I want to treat this like a business, repeatable processes that I can repeat.
- 57:01[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know you I can't I don't you can be the best guy in the world.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_04]: I'm going GNS and guess what?
- 57:07[SPEAKER_04]: I get to put it on a credit card.
- 57:08[SPEAKER_04]: That's paying me 2% back.
- 57:10[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, the three persons here have a 1% spread.
- 57:13[SPEAKER_04]: I have the security of that and that 2% that I get.
- 57:17[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it's it's it's nothing because I can build it into my deal.
- 57:21[SPEAKER_04]: I can say, you know, the price was gone off or you.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_04]: I'll just take the 3% in consideration.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_04]: Then I pay with it with a credit card, and I'm safe.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_04]: So why the FF thing is become this craze.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_04]: I can't stand FF unless I know you.
- 57:34[SPEAKER_04]: So that's majority of the time how I pay.
- 57:36[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, if I'm paying someone like her or ham, somebody's a buddy of mine, then I'll pay them FF or wire.
- 57:41[SPEAKER_04]: But outside of that, I don't, I mean, I want to be G and S all the time.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 57:46[SPEAKER_00]: We have kind of been more in the FF category because of the type of cards we've been doing.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_00]: But I'll tell you, we've had a couple of situations where we've made payments.
- 57:55[SPEAKER_00]: And one time I made a payment and all of a sudden it said like, uh, Jean-Gang-Jong has received your money or something like that.
- 58:02[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm just being honest, I'm not saying that derogatory, but it was like basically being sent overseas to some Chinese name.
- 58:08[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, I immediately called the bank and I froze the payment.
- 58:11[SPEAKER_00]: And my bank had the, you know, kind of unplug my account from PayPal.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of lessons to be learned in this whole thing about how you pay Gary the safest possible way is always GNS and people who don't understand that when you're dealing with big buyers, like go ahead and get over it because when you're dealing with a big buyer and they're going to pay you GNS, just deal with it, you know what I mean?
- 58:32[SPEAKER_00]: If you're at a show or something like that, you know, maybe you can get around it, but like I'm, I'm a big fan of that because I like the extra protection.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_04]: Well, in the GNS, here's the deal.
- 58:40[SPEAKER_04]: If someone has heartburn for it, you pay the GNS fee.
- 58:43[SPEAKER_04]: And you build it into what you're offered it.
- 58:45[SPEAKER_04]: If somebody's not wanting to accept GNS and you're paying for the fee, new slash, there's a reason.
- 58:51[SPEAKER_04]: Why are they not okay with receiving GNS funds that you're paying the fee?
- 58:55[SPEAKER_04]: Explain me that.
- 58:56[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, current, where are we going to say?
- 58:58[SPEAKER_03]: I broke my cardinal rule and I looked at my phone during this podcast and I received some bad news and I might cry and get off with here, but Edwin Diaz has signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_03]: Look at Matt's taste.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 59:12[SPEAKER_03]: You're going to have to explain that one to me.
- 59:13[SPEAKER_03]: Edwin Diaz, the mess closer, truck hits, you know, he is signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 59:19[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm very, that I've had it.
- 59:20[SPEAKER_03]: I think they needed to get any better, like they needed to get any better.
- 59:23[SPEAKER_03]: But the Dodgers are the official one.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_01]: But yes, we need Eric got a sitting with package to his office of a doctor's jersey and a Dodgers hat for Chris slide.
- 59:37[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm thinking about.
- 59:38[SPEAKER_04]: I'm thinking about this moment Because I love's I hear how I love Quintaro.
- 59:44[SPEAKER_04]: I love Seroda.
- 59:46[SPEAKER_04]: I love Joe Sue DePalla.
- 59:48[SPEAKER_04]: Love them all.
- 59:49[SPEAKER_04]: I'm thinking I'm just going to give up my braves fandom.
- 59:52[SPEAKER_04]: I'm just becoming a daughter fan.
- 59:53[SPEAKER_04]: I'm thinking that's where I'm going to go.
- 59:55[SPEAKER_00]: I love the problem.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe just going to become a doctor's fan, you know, I mean, current, if we can't be in the garden, let's just join them.
- 1:00:01[SPEAKER_04]: Let's just join them.
- 1:00:01[SPEAKER_04]: No, they stole my 30 Freeman.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just going to join them.
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_00]: Get that much better than we do, right?
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_00]: Current, current literally cannot.
- 1:00:07[SPEAKER_00]: Some of this.
- 1:00:08[SPEAKER_00]: All right, final, final rapid fire question of the episode.
- 1:00:10[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to wrap up.
- 1:00:12[SPEAKER_00]: When you sell, where do you sell and what determines when you sell?
- 1:00:16[SPEAKER_00]: Double question.
- 1:00:17[SPEAKER_00]: Where do you sell what determines when you sell?
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_03]: Probably.
- 1:00:20[SPEAKER_03]: When I know it's tough when I know it's time.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_03]: It's just a good.
- 1:00:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 1:00:24[SPEAKER_00]: We'll stick to God's and it's probably.
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, private gut.
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_00]: Baba.
- 1:00:27[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 1:00:27[SPEAKER_04]: So, I mean, public, designer, usually eBay or fanatics, one of the two, depending on the value of the card.
- 1:00:33[SPEAKER_04]: I think it's a fanatics card.
- 1:00:35[SPEAKER_04]: It's got to be, I don't sell prospects on fanatics for gold, just for FYI.
- 1:00:39[SPEAKER_04]: If it's a huge card like that, if it's a huge prospect card, honestly, I think the best place to sell it is private, and which is odd for me to say, but that's just usually the best market.
- 1:00:50[SPEAKER_04]: That's where you lean in on your relationships and say, have this available, and someone to help you.
- 1:00:55[SPEAKER_04]: find a home for it.
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_04]: Phenetics is a phenomenal job on guys that are established and eBay to me is king on anything like 10 to $10,000 under.
- 1:01:03[SPEAKER_04]: In my opinion, in that range, but when to sell has really changed for me, it is a gut thing, but I think it's also, and I think this is key, where is that person at in their journey?
- 1:01:15[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, I'm gonna leave that, that's gonna be the thought today.
- 1:01:18[SPEAKER_04]: I bought this player because I thought they were gonna be X, okay?
- 1:01:23[SPEAKER_04]: Where are they at in that journey?
- 1:01:25[SPEAKER_04]: We talk about being able to buy people in cell people three and four or five or six times in this hobby.
- 1:01:30[SPEAKER_04]: Where you make a mistake is where you don't realize that they got to the next tier in that journey.
- 1:01:35[SPEAKER_04]: and that could be pricing, that could be hype, that could be a promotion, that could be performance, it could be lack of performance.
- 1:01:44[SPEAKER_04]: In that tier can't only go one way, meaning if you're only seeing this time to sell because they're going forward, there's also a time to sell because they're going backwards.
- 1:01:54[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, you know, I'll think we talk about that enough.
- 1:01:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:01:57[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 1:01:57[SPEAKER_00]: So for Hamhouse, it is definitely probably as majority of our sales.
- 1:02:01[SPEAKER_00]: And when for me, it's just raw numbers, you know, if if we have any margin on there and it's a positive, you know, I'm probably going to take it.
- 1:02:10[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I just, you know, we're else going to get 20, 30% out of Ham.
- 1:02:14[SPEAKER_04]: Take a loss.
- 1:02:15[SPEAKER_00]: I don't.
- 1:02:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, you do.
- 1:02:17[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I mean, when you take a loss, when you take a loss, when you take a look back, I
- 1:02:23[SPEAKER_00]: just go sell it privately lose a hundred dollars to it.
- 1:02:27[SPEAKER_00]: I did I did look back at that question the largest card we'd lost on this year was a three hundred dollar loss on a card.
- 1:02:34[SPEAKER_00]: It was that was the largest loss we've had and I and I totaled up we've had eight losses this year out of about two hundred and fifty purchases.
- 1:02:41[SPEAKER_04]: Is there anybody better than the ham current?
- 1:02:43[SPEAKER_04]: Is there anybody better than a for real that's pretty that's pretty damn impressive I'm being on it eight out of two He didn't shoot like he likes to you like Steph Curry the frickin card industry.
- 1:02:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:53[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's just I'm getting Enough it doesn't matter you know
- 1:02:57[SPEAKER_00]: All right, boys, listen, it is great being back with you guys.
- 1:03:01[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody thanks for bearing with us as we went through some stuff today.
- 1:03:03[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully be helpful as you kind of plan for 26 for your own card hobby.
- 1:03:06[SPEAKER_00]: It'll look back on 25.
- 1:03:08[SPEAKER_00]: Gentlemen, we'll be back next week with a little bit of a deep dive into the opportunities in the market.
- 1:03:13[SPEAKER_00]: Right now, who's the buy, who we look in at.
- 1:03:16[SPEAKER_00]: All right, boys and girls, thanks so much for watching another episode of the SportsCard CEO.
- 1:03:20[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see you next week.
