- 0:06SPEAKER_03: This podcast is for you.
- 0:08SPEAKER_03: This is the Driven Athlete Podcast.
- 0:12SPEAKER_03: What's up, y'all?
- 0:12SPEAKER_03: It's your man, Dr.
- 0:13SPEAKER_03: Kyle.
- 0:14SPEAKER_03: We got uh Brittany Madison here with us.
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: Great, cool guest.
- 0:18SPEAKER_03: She's a uh an advanced registered nurse practitioner up in Palm Beach Gardens.
- 0:22SPEAKER_03: I know you're busy, super busy right now, especially as things are rolling in the season.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: So yeah, thank you.
- 0:27SPEAKER_03: I appreciate you coming in, breaking up some time to come down here.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having me.
- 0:30SPEAKER_03: So tell everybody uh where you're at and and what you do.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: So I am a nurse practitioner.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Um, I work for Dr.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Philip Seville.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: He is a spine surgeon in Palm Beach Gardens.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: I've been working for him for uh coming up on two years.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: And he also has a med spa um called Re-Spa.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: And I work there as well doing aesthetic treatments, Botox filler, um, other wellness treatments.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: So I have a nice, busy, full-time job over there.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I mean bouncing between both of those.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's great.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: That's cool.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: And his wife, Renata, she helps.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Renata uh is the owner, founder of Re-Spa.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: So she runs the the med spa and he runs the um the spine surgery practice.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: So it's a good, good team over there.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: That's cool.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: And so you've been there for two years.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, almost two years.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: January will be two years.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: And prior to that, you were at another practice?
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Prior to that, I was with a different spine surgeon for 10 years and had my own aesthetic business for about two years.
- 1:30SPEAKER_03: Oh, really?
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, doing it so like a side hustle.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: I didn't know that.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was it was called inlet aesthetics.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: So I just did my own, had my own LLC and did my own Botox and filler.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: Cool.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: Like traveling or Jimmy.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: No, I had a little uh I rented a room out of our spine surgery practice.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: Oh, perfect.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: So it was simple similar to what I'm doing now.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: That's awesome.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: So you've had a lot of experience with the aesthetics component of healthcare and what y'all can what y'all can do.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: Cool.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: That's awesome.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: There's a huge market for it.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: And men and women, you'd be surprised at who you know is interested in the the aesthetics side of things.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, tell tell me more.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: So, like when you say aesthetics, what does that mean?
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: Like Botox?
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Botox filler.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Um, we have an M sculpt neo machine, which does uh kills fat cells and builds muscle.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: So a lot of patients use that in addition to their more conservative or uh more well-known therapy, like physical therapy, chiropractor treatments.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: And then they want some help with building muscle in addition to what they're already doing.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: A lot of them come in and use the M sculpt neo machine.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: And we also use that uh on functional wellness side of things with our post-op spine patients or spine patients that are getting ready to have surgery that want to build up their strength getting into surgery.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: So yeah, amazing.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: We have we have a handful of mutual patients that they come in and like I'm doing the M sculpt, M Cella thing, we know with Renata and and Britney up there.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: Um like, but great, you know, the more avenues to help keep things moving and grooving and stable, strong, whatever we get feeling better, the better, you know?
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: Um so and with men, what what comp what parts?
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: Like, what do you mean?
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Uh men, we do a lot of m-sculpt neo and also the m cella chair, which you just mentioned, which is pelvic floor strengthening, not just for women.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: We use that for men as well, because it helps really build up the lower abdominal muscles too.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Um, and then men do like, you know, facials and Botox and filler now and then.
- 3:27SPEAKER_03: I wasn't aware that's is that a common thing?
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Like is it it's not as common as women, but like your schedule.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: What percent are women in?
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: A small percentage are men, but but more than I was anticipating when I got into it.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: Interesting.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:40SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: I'll have to look into that.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: I don't think my wife has really complained about anything on me.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: So like you really need to get like it there.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: Uh well, when she does, I know how to call.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: I think we all just throw like eye creams and face creams at our husbands.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Like, you should start using this.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we found this thing is really cool.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: You know, use this.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: Like like Joe Rogan or like some masculine guy's been using it.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: Do you want to try?
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, try that.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: He does?
- 4:04SPEAKER_03: Like Jocko uses this?
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Jocko uses it, you should use it.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 4:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, that's funny.
- 4:11SPEAKER_03: Um, okay, so with I wanna I wanted to ask.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: So we we have some mutual patience.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: I know pelvic floor is a is not an uncommon thing, right?
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: Right, for issues.
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: Um, and the M cellar chair is really helpful activating and stimulating pelvic floor musculature.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: Is that correct?
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: What kind of if men are listening to this, and maybe they're battling some pelvic floor issues, right?
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: What kind of common pelvic floor things do they come in with?
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: Um, the ones that I've seen that are men are either we're using it in combination with the M sculpt Neo just to really get the pelvic floor and the lower abdominal muscles strong to help support low back problems.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: But we do have one or two men that have had incontinence issues and that have come in and used um the M cella chair and has greatly increased their or improved their quality of life.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Um, we had uh one man unfortunately was having to use diapers during the evening and was able to completely stop using them thanks to the m cella chair.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: So I mean that's a huge life-changing treatment.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: So incontinence were the main thing you've seen so far.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:18SPEAKER_03: And then that as a that treatment also supportive with like low back pain.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: And are those also spine like surgical patients?
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: Some of them, some of them aren't.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're either patients that are wanting to get stronger and more rehabbed after surgery, or maybe it's someone who's trying to avoid surgery and wants to do everything possible before considering surgery.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: So those are just great additional treatments for patients on both ends, like that.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:44SPEAKER_03: And then what else you'll do for that?
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: Like use chiropractic, physical therapy, like recommend that for them?
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: All of that, all of the above.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Um, just patient to patient depends on you know their their lifestyle, what they're doing before surgery.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, we see a wide variety of patients from we see a lot of equestrians out in Wellington.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: We see those are very active people.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: We see a lot of people, um, you know, we're in Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: So we see people who like to fish, we have people that have farms, we have people who are business, businessmen and women.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: So we have older patients who are snowbirds, we have people in their 20s and 30s.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: So you really have to dial in what they're there for, what their needs are, and yeah, and figure it out patient to patient.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: We see a lot of equestrians too.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: I know like this season it gets busier here starting now, usually January through May or April, like really ramps up.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: I just saw a lady in the office this morning who was one of our equestrian young girls, like 30, 30, 31.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: And she's gearing up for uh horseback season.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: So she's just trying to get as conditioned as she can with her kind of chronic low back pain.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Knowing that riding is not gonna make it any better.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: But tough telling telling equestrians and telling golfers that they just can't shouldn't do what they love doing is not good advice.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: So you have to figure out how to just get them through what they enjoy doing with less discomfort.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: We like the conversations we have are like, we're not gonna tell you not to do your thing for sure.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: We just need to modify, right?
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: Allow things to settle down a little bit as needed.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: And then definitely we're gonna we're gonna crush stability, whatever's their main limitations, you know.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 7:27SPEAKER_03: Um, and then manual therapy, you know, soft tissue work, dry needling, all anyway, the whole encompassing thing.
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: Um makes a big difference.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: It's a huge difference, yeah, for sure.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: Um, and so you and I know you are pretty active, you and your husband and your son.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Yes, we're very active.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you want to stay active.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: We are not the sleeping in on the weekends family.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: We're like up at the crack of dawn.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: One of us is always going out for a run or going to the gym.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: Um, my son plays travel baseball, so that's a busy schedule.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Um, and it takes a lot of of figuring out scheduling to keep us all active as working adults with a child who has a busy schedule.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: So if you talk to the baseball moms on my family, they'll or on um our team, they'll tell you, I'm running at the baseball field, I'm wearing my weighted vest and taking walks around the baseball field.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Like I have to utilize that time.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: Otherwise, it's like there is no time.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: There is no time.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: So as much as I want to sit and watch practice for two hours, I try to use that time because what when else will it get done?
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Um, my husband's the the early bird, so he gets up and works out in the morning.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: And then uh I usually have to get it in after work, which is either way, is tough.
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: It is tough.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: It's like which I know.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: Are do you like if a perfect world would you rather work out in the morning or after work?
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: I would rather work out in the morning, but it really it's been years since I've been able to do that because my husband has a desk job that he's he's there even longer than I am at my job.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: So he doesn't get out of the office till 6:30 at night and he's not gonna go work out then.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: So he's the 5 a.m.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: crew.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, in a couple of years we'll both be able to work out in the morning again, but right now, you know, you gotta just fit it in.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: Um, that's something I hear a lot from like parents that are more experienced and seasoned than than like than what we're at right now.
- 9:16SPEAKER_03: I mean, my kids are a lot younger than your son, but they're like, There'll be a day, you know, there'll be a day, you'll have plenty of time, the house will be completely organized and clean, and then you're gonna miss it.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: You know, and I'm like, okay, you know.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: It seems so far away.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: I don't know, I know, but it eventually the day will come where you can make it work and you can get a workout in.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: And yeah, maybe you have to sacrifice like having the house be perfectly clean, but you get your workout in and you get your sanity back.
- 9:42SPEAKER_03: Right, 100%.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: And I was like, like, what's the priority?
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: Like, what would you rather have?
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: Like be totally stressed and not liking the direction you're going with your healthcare, your own health, felt fitness, whatever, and like a really nice organized home.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: Or vice versa.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: You know, because like the dishes will always be there.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, dishes will always always be there.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: And also you have to learn to give yourself some grace too, because um, I know it's a it's a little different with moms versus dads, maybe the the pressure we put on ourselves as women.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: But um I I've learned over the years to just, you know, it's okay if you miss a workout now and then, it's like it's fine, it's not gonna be the end of the world.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: If you feel like you need to rest today, or just you know, if your son needs to you to watch practice tonight, forget the run and go watch practice, like whatever, whatever you need to do.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: It's not there's no point in stressing out about it too much.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'd totally just do what you can do.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: We agree with that.
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: I'd probably something I need to do that better with myself, you know, a little more self-grace.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, because I I mean it's uh there's always a lot of pressure and expectations put on yourself, and also like from previous life, you know, before kids and stuff.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: It's like, well, I was doing that.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: I was working out seven days a week, six days a week.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: And now if it's you know, some weeks it's gonna be three days a week, and that's okay.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: Still good, it's still good, it's still good.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: So you just give yourself some grace.
- 11:01SPEAKER_03: So I know a question people have asked, I mean, luck look for me and other professionals and stuff are like, all right, you're a busy person, you have kids.
- 11:09SPEAKER_03: How the heck do you navigate and prioritize your own health and wellness and fitness and stuff like that?
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, for me personally, like the clinic that I have, I set it up so that I could have my one like I put I built it for my workouts.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I did.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: And then you build a business around it.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: And then I like, you know, my the patient says, I'm gonna use this stuff, they're gonna be fine.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: So fortunately, I mean, like I have a gym where I work, so I can just throw my shoes on real quick and knock out a workout before I go home or what between patients, whatever.
- 11:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:35SPEAKER_03: But everybody has that luxury.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: You being one of them.
- 11:38unknown: Right.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: So what do you what do you recommend?
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: Do you say like if your kids at baseball practice, like yeah, just time management?
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: It's all it's all about time management.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, every day when I leave my house, I have a gym bag ready to go in my trunk, so that if I do get that pocket of time, whether it's, you know, a surgery gets canceled, and now I've got three hours that I didn't plan on having today, I've got my gym bag ready and I can go to the gym or I can go run at the beach, or I can go grocery shopping and go home if that's not what's in the cards for me today.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: So, but just always being prepared.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: Um and just we've over the past couple of years taken a much bigger focus on nutrition, drinking less.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, my husband and I are getting, he just turned 40.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: I'm about to turn 40.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Just your priorities change and what you know is important changes.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: And uh we're not getting any younger.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: So we're just really the now is the time when medical issues do start popping up for people.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: And we just try to go get our lab work done once a year and make sure we're like staying on top of our health rather than just relying on our youth for keeping us healthy.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: So um, and even I've focused when I do get a chance to work out.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Sometimes it's towards a goal.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: Like right now, I'm training for a half marathon in a couple of weeks.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: If I'm not training for something, thanks.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: If I'm not training for something in particular, my focus lately has changed a lot towards workouts that are gonna make me feel good and not are not gonna hurt me.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: So I used to do a lot of kind of CrossFit style workouts, heavy lifting.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, I've never been a heavy lifter, but more weight-based.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: And now it's more of um what can I do to keep my bones strong, to keep my core strong?
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: More Pilates, more bar class, more uh walking with a weighted vest, or just whatever I know is gonna be overall healthier for me, rather than trying to keep up with things I see on social media, what the 30-year-olds are doing, what the 25-year-olds are doing.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: I just you have to change your your routine a little bit.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: But ultimately, back to your question, it's just you know, just fitting in pockets of time, um, and just thinking about if what I'm gonna eat or drink or what activity I'm gonna do, if that's gonna serve me overall for how I want this week to go, how I want the day to go.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: Um takes a lot of planning and thinking and prepping.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: And but if it's a priority, it's not that hard.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was gonna say, so it sounds like the first thing is like what are your priorities?
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: Like identify what your priorities are.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: Like, what is it that you want?
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:05SPEAKER_03: You want to be healthy, your body not hurting, not being too aggressive to where it's gonna like be a detriment to like your physical health.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: And I stand for hours in the operating room.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: That's part of my job.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: And I'm wearing a lead vest that weighs, I don't know how much, but it feels heavy after a while.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: Through the whole surgery?
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Through the whole surgery, because we take x-rays throughout the whole surgery.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: So you've got a full body weighted vest on, basically, uh a thyroid shield that's protecting you from all the x-rays.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: So I don't want to do a workout that's gonna hurt my back that then when I'm trying to stand in the operating room for 10 hours the next day, I'm like, I'm feeling it.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's a I mean, that's a great point.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: There's a lot of demand on your particular role.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: And my point career is more important to me than you know, having a six pack right now.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: So it's it's whatever is the priority.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: Or impressing all the influencers on Instagram.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Yes, exactly.
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: Um, let's say you're tired.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: You have a pocket of time that opened up.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: How what do you is there something you tell yourself to be like, no work out, or like, no, let me just like nap, you know, like rest.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: Nap is not usually my answer.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: I don't do well resting.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: I'm just one of those I I don't have it much chill in me.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: So I am run a little high strung.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: And I feel I'm an overachiever, so I like to get that workout in if I can.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: So I'm not you just naturally gravitate to more chat.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: And have you always been like that?
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: I've always that's really helpful.
- 15:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: Like if it's like I have a two-hour window or an hour window.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: If I don't go get that workout in in that window, then I just feel guilty.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: So I don't necessarily recommend that.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: But you know, some days you need to rest, some days you need to just sit and I always feel because I feel similar guilt, you know, where it's like I feel like my filter of, hey, was today I get home, my wife's like, how's your day?
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like it was productive, yeah.
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: Or not.
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: That's how you base moderate.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: Like, okay, what is the filter that's like, yes, productive, not productive?
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: It's usually like, did I do some things that like actually moved the needle today for the practice?
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: I help people, and then did I work out?
- 16:15unknown: Yeah.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: It's like those two things.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: Those are like your daily goals.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: And if I didn't work out, then I'm like, well, I not really.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like I could have done something else.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: But if I play in it, like, no, today's purposeful rest day, yes, not gonna work out today, then I feel way better.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: I'm like then you don't feel guilty about it.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: But when it's like you could have done more, some reason we just feel like we should do more.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: So do you purposely have like today's a rest day, or do you never uh yeah, I know like with my schedule, if I know it's a full surgery day and then I'm getting jacks to baseball that night, I'm not gonna put that extra pressure on myself to either wake up at 4 a.m.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: and work out before I go to work all day or to to make sure I get it in that night.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: So usually on the weekend I look at my schedule ahead and I figure out what my workout days are gonna be the next week throughout the week.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: Expecting this day to probably be bit slammed.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna work on that.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: I'm just not even gonna stress about working out that day.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: But then those days that I do have time, I better get it in.
- 17:12SPEAKER_03: So you're you've always been kind of an overachiever.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:15SPEAKER_03: You said high strong.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:17SPEAKER_03: Always like that as a kid?
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: Um, I think so.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: College to always like as a kid.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, my parents talk about how I never got in trouble.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Like, was always just I was the rule follower, like very proud of my accomplishments, and just wanted to succeed.
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: Are you familiar with the Enneagram personality?
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: Yes, I'm a three.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: You're a three?
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: I am a three and I'm a Capricorn.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: I'm like all of the overachieving, I don't know, personality stuff set up for well that's good though.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: It's set up for success for the thing, you know, and then you gravitate to the things you like.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: And then you can also mold like expectations and your life kind of around to fit that.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: I'll I'll I'm a fan of the Enneagram.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: I think it's cool.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna like, you know, live my life completely by it, but it's just like an interesting tool.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: I think it's very interesting.
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: Super interesting.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: What are you?
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: I'm an eight.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: You're an eight.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: I don't know much about anything besides my three.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: For the three.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: Um, what's your what's your husband?
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Um, he, oh, I forget.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: I forget what he is.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: But he is like, he's also very driven.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: We're very similar in our personality types.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: Um, he's very stubborn, a little more stubborn than me, but very, very driven.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Will not miss a workout, will sacrifice uh will not sacrifice a workout for like anything.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: For anything.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: So consistency.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: Very consistent.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, like with his Iron Man training that he just did.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, you have to be very, very driven and very dedicated for that.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: And he has a full-time job as well.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: So talk about fitting it in, like five-hour bike rides on Saturday morning starting at 5 a.m.
- 18:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's it's nuts.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: That's crazy.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: So hopefully we're instilling some of this in our son.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: You say, I mean, he's he's watching this.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: He's watching it.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean, I hope we don't push him the other way and say, like, oh my god, my parents are nuts.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: I don't want to be like them.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: That's the last thing I want to do.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: I'm never doing that.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Like we're the, you know, we run the we run on Thanksgiving morning, like we do the turkey traw.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: We do the turkey trough.
- 19:11SPEAKER_03: We were gonna sign up for that this year.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's fun.
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: But I read on the website that you can't have strollers there.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: They say that, but every year there's strollers, whether you're willing to risk it or not.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: But right, every because I I had this discussion with friends like the past couple of years, and they're like, it says no strollers, but then there's always people there with strollers.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: The one in Sequesta, we do it every year.
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: That's the one we were gonna do.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: The five, the four miler.
- 19:34SPEAKER_03: We were but we have like my daughter's five.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, my son's three and a half, and then my baby's 11 months.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: So we would have the double stroller, yeah, the bob.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: And then my daughter would probably run, walk, we ride on the stroller.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: One of us is gonna carry them.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: I feel like if you stick to the back of the pack, I mean it's it's a problem if you're up at the front trying to like win the race, but if you stay to the back, I don't think they're gonna like tell you how to.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: We ruled it out.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: No, reinvestigate.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: I think I think I actually have a friend coming into my office this afternoon who had the same question last year.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Let me find out if she ended up using the stroller.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and then text me.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: Because my daughter was really old, like and my son, they were like, we told them like we're not gonna be able to do it this year.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: You know, they were bummed.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: Because we told them what we were gonna do.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: I think you'll be able to do it.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: Just I was signing up and then it was like a pie at the end.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: It's cute.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, all right.
- 20:23SPEAKER_03: We'll have to we're gonna check it out.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: Find out.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, let me know.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: Um, so your husband's probably a three.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, something like something very similar.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: Sounds also maybe an eight.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: Like, um, yeah, interesting.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: But it's really cool.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: I've actually done a whole podcast, a couple podcasts on just the Enneagram.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: Oh, but I'll have to buy us.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: And then one of my guys that like he's a mentor of mine, he came in and we talked a little about he's a coach about coaching with Enneagram's personality styles and like how to communicate to different kids' expectations.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because it it makes a big difference.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, when you you have to understand how somebody else is how they take what what motivates them, what drives them, what yeah, and it's not the same as what works for us.
- 21:03SPEAKER_03: The lens and how they perceive everything.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: It's like, but I think number one, I've talked with people about that too.
- 21:08SPEAKER_03: Like, can you accept the reality that they don't have the same perspective you do?
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: Number one, that's hard for people.
- 21:13SPEAKER_03: Can you just aware of that?
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: Okay, check that box, cool.
- 21:16SPEAKER_03: Now what are they though?
- 21:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:17SPEAKER_03: Then how do you communicate effectively?
- 21:19SPEAKER_03: Or if they're in a certain mood or whatever, like why maybe?
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: Um, but it was really I'd have my wife do it a couple of times too, like done together, and then kind of like diving in a little bit like a relationship, yeah, dynamics.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: It's kind of like the love languages, like it's yeah, you know, it it helps you to understand what your other partner is.
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: Super interesting.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: What about have you had Jax do it?
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: No, I should have him do it.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: What do you think he'd be?
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: He's not uh he's not a three, I don't think.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: He's a little more laid back, but he's also an only child, and he's uh he's an achiever, he strives to do well, he does not want to disappoint.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: He's a perfectionist, but I don't think he's quite like he doesn't have that drive quite yet, but I think he will as he's also young.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: He gets nine.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's only nine.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: So he's getting into that like upper elementary school age where they're they're starting to get their real defined personalities here.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: Starting to mold a little bit more.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: A couple of years.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: I didn't the first one I did it with that guy I was talking about mentoring.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: Um, he was like, we were really involved with the youth group and growth stuff growing up.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: He actually uh officiated our wedding.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 22:28SPEAKER_03: And then baptized all three of our kids.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: Oh wow.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: So he's been he's been around for a long time with us.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: But um, I remember I did it with him when I was in high school.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: And I got the same answers that I did now.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 22:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'll have to.
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: It also depends on your mood, too.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: I feel like yeah.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: Um, okay.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: So you said all right, your husband.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: He did an he just did an Iron Man.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he just did his third full Iron Man.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: Third one.
- 22:49SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: And he crushed it.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: He did great.
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: Like every how many, how often?
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: Like once he didn't.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: So we we're part of a a uh triathlon company called Inlet Tri Club up in Jupiter.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: And it's full of just amazing individuals who are all of the same mindset and um it's the best, very driven, great, great people, all you know, families.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: They all have a lot of them have kids, grown old or grown young.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: Um, and they really just support each other and lift each other up.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: And this great group of guys has really just found so much joy in doing these races together.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: And so they pick one a year for the past couple of years.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: At least that's our experience.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: Some of the other guys do much more than this.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: But my husband has done one a year for the past three years.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: Um, and we did a half Iron Man together two years ago.
- 23:37SPEAKER_03: Oh, how was that?
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: That was difficult for me.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: So that was like my full Iron Man.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Like for me, that distance was really, really challenging.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: And it's a lot.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: It was a lot.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: I finished it.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: I finished in the time, and it was a great experience, but it was it was very challenging.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: So the the triathlon club, um, the guys just they get together and do all their training together, and it's a lot of fun.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: And then we basically take a big trip together and we all stay in a house, and us wives do all the, you know, or the sherpas, and we get them whatever they need, and it's just a lot of fun.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: And and kind of that what we were talking about earlier, as you get older and you you have to kind of rediscover yourself a little bit.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: So we went from having all of our friends were through the CrossFit gym, you know, 10, 15 years ago, and now it's we've kind of shifted a little bit to now we have these triathlon families.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: It's cool.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: And you know, the kids are watching everybody train and have a goal.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: And I think it's positive.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: And around all the like-minded people.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: And around all the like-minded people who can still have a good time, but you know, we're not out drinking at the clubs or bars together.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: We're like, you know, having I don't know, running parties and stuff.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: It's kind of nerdy, but it's like that's where we are now.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:53SPEAKER_03: Um, it's funny.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: But so you guys want to trip like for the Iron Man?
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: So like they just did Iron Man California, which was in Sacramento two weeks ago.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: And so you all just got back.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we just got back and we spent a couple of days in Monterey and Northern California after the race.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: And we just like pick a fun destination and they train for a couple months and go get it done, and we get to take a little family trip out of it.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: That's really cool.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: No, that's awesome.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: I I mean, like, I would totally agree.
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: Like, who you I mean, I've heard, I'm sure you've heard the saying too, like, you are the melting pot of the five people you hang out with most.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 25:26SPEAKER_03: And then um, yeah, if you're gonna hang out with like if you want to be an Iron Man competitor to hang out with five other Iron Man competitors, you'll be the sixth.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: You have to find people that have the same goals as you.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: And it doesn't have to, it doesn't, I don't mean for it to sound like you know, it has to be these high, high, high achieving goals.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: Like a full Iron Man is, I mean, it's like marathon running.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's just not a lot of people find that to be fun.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's not really my, yeah, and physically too.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's physically demanding, it's mentally demanding.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Totally.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: Um, I think it takes like a special type of wired person to get through something like that.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, there's so many other things now.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: There's pickleball, there's all these like super popular.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, super popular.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: I think it's great that there's all these opportunities for people in all stages of life to get out and find something new that can pull them to meet new people.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: Um, there's all these wellness clubs now.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: Do you see like the club is one of them on the weekends that um is the Jupiter So like a Jupiter social club?
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: There's well, they have them all throughout South Florida now.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: Dr.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: Diana, they do that.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's doing self-working.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: So they're all going and they have like cold plunges and they they run a little bit, or there'll be like a hit class setup and yeah, and then there's like you know, sports drinks there, and it's all just geared towards getting people together and uh encouraging them to be healthy.
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Just so great.
- 26:51SPEAKER_03: So you did when did you when did you exit the high intensity lifting with CrossFit style workouts?
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: Probably when I had my son.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, I think yeah.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: Like after I had I mean, I still worked out.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: I was doing like orange theory when I was pregnant with him just to kind of scale back.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: And then after I had him, I kind of hopped around to different gyms.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Um I did like heart exercise works and a couple of the other gyms up in Jupiter.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: Um, but I just found it really difficult for the first like five years when he after he was born to like find a good steady routine.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: Um, didn't feel great about myself, but it was just like the stage of life, the season of life that we were in.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: So I was doing a lot of home workouts and fight trying to find like home programs, you know, um what was the what beach body stuff like that that used to be popular?
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 10, you know, five, 10 years.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: He's nine, so somewhere in the last four or five years.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: Um and then now that once he got a little older and I was able to start getting back into the gym and just kind of finding running again and then getting back into sprint triathlons and doing long distance triathlons.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: I'm not necessarily great at any any of it, but it keeps me motivated and I do really well with having a goal and a and a treat and a um training plan.
- 28:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: So and I have to cycle on and off of it.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: You sign up for something, yeah.
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: It's like November 30th, you have this thing.
- 28:17SPEAKER_03: Like I've got to be prepared.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: So that actually really does help too with those days where you have the pockets of time.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: It's so easy to just be like, I don't need to go to the gym.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: But if you know, like today I'm supposed to get a six mile run in today on my that's what my my training peaks says I'm supposed to do.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: So like that at least motivates you more than if you didn't have a training program to be like, okay, I gotta go get my six miles done today.
- 28:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I have to because I signed up.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: I signed up, and that's what it tells me.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: If I want to be successful on race day, then I need to get this done today.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:48SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 28:48SPEAKER_03: So it sounds like let's summarize real quick.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: Sounds like number one, identify the priorities.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: Like, what are your priorities?
- 28:55SPEAKER_03: Like, what do you want?
- 28:56SPEAKER_03: What are your goal?
- 28:57SPEAKER_03: Like, what do you want to have?
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: Um, number two would be to surround yourself with people that are like-minded to influence you in that direction.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 29:04SPEAKER_03: And then number three would be to sign up for something.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 29:08SPEAKER_03: Because then when you have pockets of time, you're gonna prioritize like I need to train for this thing so I don't embarrass myself or get hurt or something.
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: Right and waste my money, you know, and sign up for this thing.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: I think it helps a lot to have a goal.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: And a lot of the gyms do their own goals too.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: So it may be as simple as sign up for a gym.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: Like if you're trying to do it all on your own at home and it's just not motivating you enough, then maybe it's time to get some form of accountability.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, a new environment.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, totally.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: And and publicly in front of other people, like together.
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: Well, it's also like surrounding yourself by people that are somewhat you know, like minded, same kind of thought.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: That's cool.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: That's awesome.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah, hopefully, I mean, your son's watching it.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, from what I've told.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, my kids are younger than your kids, so I'm less experienced than you, but what I've heard from other people is like they do watch.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:55SPEAKER_03: And like, I mean, as an example too, like my kids will say things that we say.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they hear it and they see it.
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: They like my daughter, yeah, it's it's just funny.
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: Like she spilled something and she was like, gosh dang it.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: And I was like, oh whoa.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: Like, where did she hear that from?
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: What we what we try exactly, what we try to say, like to be more funny, is like we'll say, like, Dad Gummet, you know?
- 30:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:17SPEAKER_03: We watched like there's Bill Dance.
- 30:19SPEAKER_03: He was like an old fisherman guy in Tennessee, the old show and fishing show.
- 30:23SPEAKER_03: You know what I'm talking about?
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: It's really funny.
- 30:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's just not my thing.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: He just would say that a lot.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: That was his thing.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: So I would just say it in our, you know, if we drop something or if or no, something gets canceled, but oh, Dad Gummet, you know?
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: So they they say so they'd be at school and be like, Dad Gummet.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: And I know your kids are they'll love having active parents.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: Like, I do know that my son has said that multiple times to us.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: Like, he loves having uh a strong dad, and he loves having like even every now and then he'll tell me he'll say that to me.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: Like, I love I love that you're a strong mom.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: And oh, it's awesome.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: So they see he sees it.
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: That's gotta be motivating too.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: So I mean, I think they they'll see you and they'll see other parents, and I think that's when they really realize how that if they want to be like you, yeah, they have to put the the time and the effort into it as well when they get older.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: Um, no, I love that.
- 31:18SPEAKER_03: He's definitely watching.
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but the other cool thing is like my wife will go like work out like a couple, like twice a week right now.
- 31:27SPEAKER_03: And um, my daughter will be like, I want to go with you to the gym.
- 31:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:29SPEAKER_03: She's like, I'm gonna get my exercise clothes on.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: That's so cute.
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: And then she'll like be like, okay, you work out in the garage, she's gonna go to the gym, we'll come back, I'll work out with you.
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and she'll be doing like in the gym in the garage with like a mat.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: She's doing push-ups and jumping jacks.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: She has her exercise clothes on her workout, her water bottles with her.
- 31:45SPEAKER_03: That's so cute.
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: My son will join too, you know.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: So I there was like one day I was like, she left, and I was like, Where did where'd Blakely go?
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: You know, like trying to find her, and she's in the garage doing her own workout.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: So I got the video, and I was like, What are you doing?
- 31:58SPEAKER_03: You know, yeah, it was awesome.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: I was like, I love that, you know.
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: Hopefully, can instill that.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: Props to your wife for even getting her twice a week workout in with three kids.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's such a juggle.
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: Oh, 100%.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: And she's super tired all the time.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: And I was like, well, I mean, I always there's two classes she likes to go to in her Mondays and Wednesdays.
- 32:16SPEAKER_03: And I was like, if you want to go every day, I'll try to be home as soon as I can.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you can go every day.
- 32:21SPEAKER_03: I'll take the kids from you know 4 30 or 4 4 50 to go at 6 30.
- 32:26SPEAKER_03: It's not that big of a deal, you know.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: And she's like, No, I just want to go twice.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: I'm like, all right, let me know.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: That's huge that you're offering that too, because a lot of you know, not all couples work that way.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: So uh she probably even feels guilty like asking for those two days to go and do that.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: But I'm like immediately stopped encouraging it, it's yeah, helpful.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: Just go.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: My husband will do the same thing, like, just go.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: Do you know tell me what you're doing?
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: Just like get out the door.
- 32:54SPEAKER_03: Some separation time.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's so crazy because the kids will be hanging on her, like, don't leave me.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: I'm like prying them off.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: She's gotta go.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: She's like, I'm sorry.
- 33:03SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, just roll up your window and just drive.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: That'll be fine.
- 33:07SPEAKER_03: They'll be okay.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: It'll be okay.
- 33:08SPEAKER_03: Because every single time you leave, within three to five minutes, they're totally fine.
- 33:12SPEAKER_03: We're playing, having fun, whatever.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: I know it's hard though.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: It's such a hard like season to care for yourself.
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: It is little I don't and like as a as a man, like a dad, I don't I don't feel it the same way that a mom does with the kids and like leaving.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: What's that like?
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: Do you remember doing that with Jim?
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: No, it was I I definitely sacrificed my workouts to be home a lot, you know, when he was little.
- 33:38SPEAKER_03: Like I can't leave by I can't leave.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: Or, you know, when he was really little, I would take him with me to the gym.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: And I mean, the second he made a noise, I was like, okay, I'm done.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: I'm done.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: Like, I'll go get him, I'll go get him.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: And really, he was fine.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: He would have been fine if I just, you know, kept going.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: But it was just a lot of catering to him.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: So that's funny.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, it's uh it's tough.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: And nighttime's also tough, you know.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, you're not sleeping, then it's much easier to say, Oh, yeah, I'd rather get my nap in today because you need it at that point.
- 34:09SPEAKER_03: You do, yeah, totally.
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: I don't have that excuse anymore.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: We're all sleeping through the nights, which is good.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: He didn't sleep until he was like way too old.
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: So I mean, we just we I don't know four, three, four.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: He was still like would get up just early.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: He was just an early riser.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: So I mean, it would be like the four o'clock hour, and he would be like up for the day.
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: It's tough.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: So each kid's different.
- 34:34SPEAKER_03: It's like at nighttime when it's like, all right, he's in bed, it's 9 30.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: I have a choice.
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: I can like watch a show, yeah, you know, have a drink or something, have some snacks, or I can like go to bed immediately.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: Because I know he's gonna be up.
- 34:46SPEAKER_02: I know it's tough.
- 34:47SPEAKER_03: It's a bad, it's a daily battle.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because we still we're yeah, yeah.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: Cause our our 11-month-old, he we've sleep trained him, but he's not, he's resisting for sure.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: Like he was up for an hour last night from maybe 11 to 12 or something, or maybe 10 to 11.
- 35:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: That I was in, I'm going in and out, you know, trying to continue the sleep training process.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's my wife's like, it's been an hour, something's wrong.
- 35:10SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, bro, like we have to continue this.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: Anyway, she went in and got him.
- 35:15SPEAKER_03: I was like, oh man.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: I know it's tough.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: It's tough.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, I didn't sleep train him, that's why my husband would be like, believe him.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, I can't.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he needs me.
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I haven't actually no, I've I've been tucking my wife off a cliff or all three kids with that.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: It's hard.
- 35:33SPEAKER_03: Like, she's and she, I would like leave the house and go for a walk.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like you gotta get out of here.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: Like you're it's cruel, I can't leave them.
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: I so she'll like watch the monitor as they're you know crying.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: And I'm like going in and out, there's a crescendo of more crime, yeah.
- 35:49SPEAKER_03: And it's every time I'm like, we'd turn that fucking monster.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: Like, you're making it worse for yourself.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: It's like I can't not look.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: I know it's terrible.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: I was not good at that.
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: That's funny.
- 35:59SPEAKER_03: Well, it's a common thing, apparently.
- 36:01SPEAKER_03: You know, it's a common thing, apparently, right?
- 36:04SPEAKER_03: Um, but okay, so and Jax is playing travel baseball.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Metro plays travel baseball.
- 36:09SPEAKER_03: And he's training at Arise, right?
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: Yes, which I love because they start this great foundation at such a young age for getting the kids used to an organized workout.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: It's mostly bodyweight stuff.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: They're not doing, you know, they're not lifting heavy weights, they're lifting like um what are the balls called?
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: Like the medicine balls.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: Medicine balls.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: They'll they'll use some of those or they'll use very, very light dumbbells, maybe.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: But for the most part, it's like speed and agility.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: It's body weight squats and push-ups and wall sits and coordination.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: Coordination.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: Um, so they do an hour of that once a week right now, and then they go into their hitting uh sessions there.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: And then we have him in like catching lessons and he's starting to do a little bit of pitching lessons.
- 36:54SPEAKER_03: He's a catcher.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: He's a catcher, yeah.
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: But he wants to catch it.
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: And he plays some outfield, but he wants to do everything.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: He just wants to play wherever he can play.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: So he was playing catcher pretty consistently a year or two ago, and then on this team, we have uh a really, really good catcher.
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: So he's kind of taken a step back with catching, but we're still keeping the lessons up because it's such a good position for him to be skilled at.
- 37:14SPEAKER_03: Just versatile, yeah.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, Rise is a really great facility for for those youth conditioning.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and also good, like, well, two things.
- 37:23SPEAKER_03: One, like we have a lot of youth athletes, we see too.
- 37:25SPEAKER_03: And we're always gonna advocate like to not specialize in like one position.
- 37:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, like play a lot of things, played in multiple sports, just gonna make you more a better athlete in general.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: And there's less risk of injury actually with playing most more sports because you're not like doing the same thing over and over again.
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but then also like training in a facility like that.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: Um, they witness their friends working out, and then athletes that are older than them and they're like, Oh, that's what that looks like.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, when the big boys are in there working out, they like to be working out in that same area.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: That environment.
- 37:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I want to be like them, I want to do what they're doing.
- 37:59SPEAKER_03: Like if I'm slacking or like I thought this was hard, like this is way harder.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 38:04SPEAKER_03: I need to pick it up, you know, which is good.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 38:08SPEAKER_03: I used to love that when I was like a young athlete, and I'd be in there with like see the bigger kids.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: See the bigger kids.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I thought that I was working hard.
- 38:17SPEAKER_03: We're really not.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: It's humbling.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: They've got to see that.
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, totally.
- 38:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, and then so and Arise has their own travel team.
- 38:24SPEAKER_03: That's the team he plays on.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so they've had uh travel teams for the older groups, like I think 12, 13, 14, and they just added 10 U and 11U this past summer.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: So he started with them um over the summer because we've been familiar with Arise and he's done training there for the past couple of years.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: So um it was a good fit.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: So we went over there and he we've traveled up like to Sanford and we do some traveling a little bit south, Boynton Boca, yeah, kind of steward, the areas around here.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's good, it keeps us all busy.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: Um, I love it because you know, is it is a lot of weekend time at the field, but we're all there together as a family.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: So it's like family time.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: Totally.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: And we have a really great group of families there together.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: So it's when you're looking at it from the outside, it's easy to be like, oh, this is like a lot of work and time commitment.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: And I would never put my kid in travel sports and all of this.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: But really, it's like, I don't know what we would be doing otherwise.
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: Like my boys are kind of homebodies, so they like to sit around the house, and this just at least gets us out and we're all in the same place and is making lots of memories.
- 39:31SPEAKER_03: Right, exactly.
- 39:31SPEAKER_03: Family excursions, yeah, it's productive, it's helpful.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: It's like we'll do like dinners after with the team.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: It's just it's just fine.
- 39:37SPEAKER_03: Socializing, social, yeah.
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: We're definitely getting our kids in sports.
- 39:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like we're I mean, like if they don't like we're gonna expose them to that, and if they're into it, we'll facilitate more.
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: And I could see travel being definitely a part of that.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and signing them up for things that they don't necessarily want to, also.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: Like he I forced him, forced him to do basketball last winter.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 39:57SPEAKER_01: And he was so mad at me when I signed him up without talking to him about it, but then he loved it, and so this year he's probably gonna do it again.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: He's talked about it.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we've talked about it.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: I've he's teetering with I think he forgets how much he loved it.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because he loves playing with his buddies basketball, like uh, you know, just them.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: But I'm like, you're really good.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's getting really coordinated now.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I think you need to actually try something other than baseball.
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's like a baseball player, yeah.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: But I'm like, you know, you gotta like you said, you gotta do other sports too, or you're gonna just burn out and over fatigue.
- 40:28SPEAKER_03: What about what are your thoughts on football?
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: Uh I love watching other people play football because big college football fans, but you all went to UF, right?
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: I went to UF and my husband went to Florida State.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: Oh, wow.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so we're house divided.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: And we love college football.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: And we love SEC and ACC football, I suppose.
- 40:48SPEAKER_03: But we love SEC and we like AEC.
- 40:51SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 40:51SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: So funny.
- 40:53SPEAKER_01: So I, you know, Jax hasn't really had a desire to play football, so we haven't really had to have that discussion.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: Um, but on I I always laugh at like, you know, I don't want him to play because of the head injury and the CTE and all of that.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: Totally.
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: But my son, his head is a magnet for the baseball.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: He gets hit in the head with the baseball more than any other kid.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: He has a big ball print on his cheek right now.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: Yesterday, he got hit with he has a jaw guard, but the ball, the pitcher hit him right on the jaw guard, and he's got an imprint of the ball and the jawguard.
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: So he was bathing.
- 41:27SPEAKER_03: He was hitting.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: He was hitting in his game yesterday.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: I got hit by a pitch.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: And then probably two months ago, he was in batting practice with coach.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: Coach threw the ball to him and it went straight to his nose.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: Blood everywhere.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, oh, we're in the safe sport of baseball, but really he's probably had more head injuries with baseball.
- 41:47SPEAKER_03: Those are hard at, you know, that's a hard ball.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: It's hard, yeah.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: So we'll see.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: He he hasn't had any desire to play football besides like with his buddies.
- 41:54SPEAKER_01: So all right.
- 41:54SPEAKER_03: So it hasn't really been a thing yet.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: But you know, I have my my brother-in-law is a high school football coach in California.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: And for a really good team, they've won state championships from California's big, so that's that's a big deal.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: My nephews all play football out there.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: Football out there is like what baseball and lacrosse is here, like just everybody plays football.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: And so we have the discussion about like, you know, should kids be playing football or not?
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: And everybody's got their opinions.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: But I mean, I think they I think they've made the rules safer now for early years.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: Um it's different now than it was.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's not like a free-for-all.
- 42:32SPEAKER_03: It's uh I mean it's it it there's still gonna be head injuries no matter what.
- 42:37SPEAKER_03: And as as much as you change the game, like it's still gonna it's gonna happen.
- 42:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but it's taught a lot differently, and then the day-to-day practice is a lot different than it was when I played.
- 42:48SPEAKER_03: And then the games are rule, you know, regulated a little bit differently.
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: But um, it's so it's it's a lesser degree of just like you know, lead with your head, you know, like but it still happens, right?
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: With all the targeting calls and everything, like there.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: I know they're trying to minimize it.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: Trying to minimize it.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: It still happens, yeah.
- 43:05SPEAKER_03: And it still happens, yeah, you know, but um yeah, how to see.
- 43:09SPEAKER_03: I mean, who knows?
- 43:09SPEAKER_03: If you watch a lot of football with you guys and he's gonna be able to do it, yeah, he does play.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: He does.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 43:13SPEAKER_03: Where'd you all meet then?
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: You and your husband, if you all went to different schools in Jupiter down here.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: I came down to Jupiter to go to Beer Fest and Abacoa with some girlfriends, and I met him um there.
- 43:23SPEAKER_03: Cool.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: With like a mutual group of friends, and so you're like, I go to FSU, and you're like, I go to Florida.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's get married.
- 43:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Sounds great, right?
- 43:32SPEAKER_03: They uh Florida had a rough one this past weekend.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we were there.
- 43:37SPEAKER_03: You were you were in Jacksonville for the game.
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: We were in Jacksonville for the game.
- 43:40SPEAKER_03: That is always an intense experience.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: It was fun.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: We did it.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: Um, we weren't quite in like the the crowds down.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: We we had fortunately had some box seats, which was really great.
- 43:51SPEAKER_01: So um it was actually a really good game if it wasn't for us losing.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it was exciting to watch.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: And yeah, of course.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: Steve Spurger came up into the box.
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: We got to meet him.
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: Oh no way.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was that's cool.
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: Uh, but yeah, I haven't been to Florida, Georgia since I was in college, so that was like a very different experience than your son there 18, 20 years ago.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: A little bit different experience this time.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: It's like Jack, see all those people we're not gonna go over there.
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: We're not gonna go over there.
- 44:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 44:19SPEAKER_03: It's like the real fans are over here, right?
- 44:22SPEAKER_03: Gonna watch the game.
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: That's what we're here for.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 44:26SPEAKER_03: We're here for the game.
- 44:26SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 44:27SPEAKER_03: For uh FSU's not they're not doing so good either.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but we always like usually it's it's so one-sided each season.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: It's like one of our teams is clearly gonna win the Florida Florida state game.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: Um, but this year it's like it kind of could be toss up either game.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: It could be either either team could win.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: So we might go up for it.
- 44:49SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 44:49SPEAKER_03: Oh, that'd be cool.
- 44:50SPEAKER_03: It's always like the Saturday after Thanksgiving, right?
- 44:52SPEAKER_03: Which is always hard.
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: It's hard.
- 44:54SPEAKER_03: It's hard.
- 44:54SPEAKER_03: I could see us in the future.
- 44:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: My daughter, right now, my son's really he's only three and a half, right?
- 44:59SPEAKER_03: But he like wants to watch football.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: It's like, Dad, can we watch football right now?
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yeah.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: You have to take him up for like homecoming when they have the parade and all like fun stuff for the kids and families.
- 45:10SPEAKER_03: And they they love all the energy and the um all the goings on and like people and all the snacks, all snacks for sure.
- 45:17SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: Can't treats all the treats when you go out for a football game.
- 45:21SPEAKER_03: Totally.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: They'll be into it soon, you know.
- 45:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we'll we'll make it happen.
- 45:25SPEAKER_03: Um so you all right, so your son's playing travel baseball.
- 45:29SPEAKER_03: Um, has he bad on any injuries or anything like that?
- 45:32SPEAKER_03: And he's been totally fine other than getting hit the face with the basis.
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: Other than the multiple uh head injuries.
- 45:36SPEAKER_01: Uh no, he hasn't I'm trying to think.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: He hasn't had any any significant injuries from playing baseball.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: He's not a pitcher.
- 45:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's just now starting to do some pitching lessons.
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: So he's not throwing a ton.
- 45:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, as a catcher, you do throw more than I realized because they're throwing the ball back after every single play.
- 45:55unknown: Yeah.
- 45:56SPEAKER_01: Um, but he his arms have been fine.
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, he's he's stayed developmentally doing well with baseball.
- 46:04SPEAKER_01: No issues there.
- 46:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:05SPEAKER_03: It's good to get good training as well.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think that's helping a lot.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: We're doing some workouts with him at home on the weekends and stuff too.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: Just trying to keep him like moving.
- 46:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 46:14SPEAKER_01: Because his age, they just want to be on the screen when they're not playing a sport.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: So try to get him out as much as we can.
- 46:20SPEAKER_03: Does he have does he have social media?
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: No.
- 46:23SPEAKER_01: No, no social media.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think we're far from that for with him.
- 46:27SPEAKER_01: I know every kid's different.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: Like some of his friends already, I don't know that they have social media, but they're just so much more kind of like mature or more like like they're ready for they want a phone, they want the social media stuff.
- 46:39SPEAKER_01: Jax has never really like expressed that interest yet.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: He's not there yet.
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: He's not there yet.
- 46:44SPEAKER_01: So we're just keeping that as long as we can.
- 46:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, totally.
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:48SPEAKER_03: Man, I like will staunchly be like, we're not getting social media like until I mean, well, now it's 16 years old and illegally, right?
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: So good.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: Great, you know.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: Well, even his whole team, they started a group chat.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: And so all the moms were like, okay, you know, send me your kids' phone number or email account so we can add them to the group chat.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: And we were the only ones that didn't have a phone number or an email account set up for our son.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: And I was like, is this a thing already?
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: And they're like, Oh yeah, they already have, you know, their iTunes accounts or uh, you know, Apple accounts and all of that.
- 47:21SPEAKER_01: So we ended up doing it, but it's just for him to be able to group chat.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: And he doesn't really know how to do anything else with it.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: And we have like controls on everything, but it's good.
- 47:31SPEAKER_01: That's weird, like getting to that point.
- 47:32SPEAKER_03: I know, I can't even imagine.
- 47:34SPEAKER_03: No.
- 47:34SPEAKER_03: What?
- 47:35SPEAKER_03: No, phone?
- 47:36SPEAKER_01: No, it's it's very strange when it's your kids getting to that point.
- 47:39SPEAKER_03: Man, I can't, yeah.
- 47:40SPEAKER_03: I'm not ready.
- 47:41SPEAKER_03: Definitely not ready.
- 47:43SPEAKER_03: Um, so all right.
- 47:44SPEAKER_03: So also uh before we land the plane, you um there's a nurse practitioner, you do the orthopedic side, right?
- 47:51SPEAKER_03: Back to work.
- 47:52SPEAKER_03: All right, so you're with in the you're in the operating room.
- 47:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm in the operating room.
- 47:56SPEAKER_03: For all of his cases.
- 47:58SPEAKER_01: All of his cases, yep.
- 47:59SPEAKER_01: So I'm usually his first assistant.
- 48:01SPEAKER_01: So he's standing on one side of the table.
- 48:04SPEAKER_01: I'm directly across from him, uh, looking in the other side of the microscope with him if we've got a scope for that case.
- 48:10SPEAKER_01: Um, I know all of his instruments that he needs.
- 48:12SPEAKER_01: So we have a scrub tech that has everything set up, and then I help them, you know, get him whatever he needs for the case.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: I do our closures for our cases, so do the suturing.
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: Um, and then I see all of our patients for their post-op visits.
- 48:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, he sees a lot of them too, of course, but I'm the one who kind of triages and keeps up with them after surgery.
- 48:32SPEAKER_01: Um, and I love it.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: I love that part of being in the I love seeing the patients when they come in in pain, unfortunately.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: Finding their surgical plan for them, being in the operating room with them, and then getting to see them after surgery.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: It's very fulfilling.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: That's cool.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: The whole process.
- 48:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: Um, and y'all do when I had Dr.
- 48:51SPEAKER_03: Seville on here, he was uh anterior disc replacement is a common one in the neck.
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:56SPEAKER_01: We do a lot of cervical disc replacements and a lot of lumbar disc replacements, which is great because um it's a newer technique.
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: It's not new, but it's newer than the fusion.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: And so a lot of surgeons weren't trained on doing lumbar disc replacements, um, and even cervical disc replacements.
- 49:12SPEAKER_01: So I think that really stands, uh sets him apart.
- 49:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:15SPEAKER_01: And patients come from all over to find him to get their disc replacements.
- 49:20SPEAKER_01: And he does a really great job.
- 49:21SPEAKER_03: That's cool.
- 49:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:22SPEAKER_03: What it what's like the protocol?
- 49:23SPEAKER_03: So, like they do disc replacement surgery.
- 49:25SPEAKER_03: And also, so also what other surgeries?
- 49:27SPEAKER_03: Do spinal decompression?
- 49:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we do decompressions, uh, microdysquectomies, laminectomies, foramenotomies.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, we do a little bit of everything when it comes to spine.
- 49:36SPEAKER_01: We don't do a lot of uh deformity surgery, so like scoliosis surgery, but pretty much everything else is is on the table.
- 49:44SPEAKER_03: Cool.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:45SPEAKER_03: Um, and what that's the usual process.
- 49:47SPEAKER_03: So, like somebody comes in, like if someone's like, I have battling back pain, they're listening right now.
- 49:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, what do they do?
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they come in, they tell us what's going on.
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: We do a good thorough history and physical exam.
- 49:57SPEAKER_01: Uh we have x-rays in our office, so we usually start with some x-rays.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: Um, and then most patients get sent out for MRIs, which shows us a lot of information, shows us uh all the structures of the spine, the soft tissue, the discs, the their nerves being compressed, which can be causing arm and leg symptoms, spinal cord compression, um, could be causing weakness in their arms or legs.
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: So that gives the MRI is like that's what tells us what's going on.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: Um, and then we set up a plan for them.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: If they haven't done anything yet, we usually start pretty conservative with physical therapy, um, anti-inflammatories, maybe do an injection or two with steroids or with PRP.
- 50:33SPEAKER_01: We do both of those in the office.
- 50:35SPEAKER_01: Um, and then if none of that helps, then we start talking about surgery.
- 50:40SPEAKER_01: Sometimes we jump straight to surgery if somebody is really neurologically compromised.
- 50:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:46SPEAKER_01: So it just depends on what's going on.
- 50:48SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, that's the process.
- 50:50SPEAKER_01: And then he he really sits down and comes up with an individualized surgical plan and we get it done.
- 50:57SPEAKER_03: You schedule, and if it's surgery, it's indicated scheduled surgery.
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: And then after surgery, they come in two weeks later and we look at incisions, we take x-rays, we just overall go through how they're doing, uh, adjust any medications that need to be adjusted.
- 51:12SPEAKER_01: Most of our patients are not on chronic opioid therapy post-op, by the way.
- 51:16SPEAKER_01: So, you know, that's I know that's something that a lot of people are scared of when they hear back surgery.
- 51:21SPEAKER_01: They think of, you know, long-term pain medication, and that's not at all what it's like anymore.
- 51:27SPEAKER_01: It used to be years ago, but that's that's not it anymore.
- 51:30SPEAKER_01: We give them a small amount of opioids, and most patients don't even need all of that after surgery.
- 51:36SPEAKER_01: Um, so they come back in, and usually by six weeks, um, they're getting back into some PT, getting back to some rehab, and usually by about three months, or restriction free for the most part.
- 51:48SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 51:49SPEAKER_01: So very different from when I started working in spine surgery about 12 years ago.
- 51:53SPEAKER_01: And we were still doing, I mean, you almost everybody got a lumbar fusion.
- 51:57SPEAKER_01: Like that's what you got if you were having back pain.
- 52:00SPEAKER_01: And it was a year-long recovery and lots of meds, and you know, it was a it was a long process.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:07SPEAKER_01: Now, I mean, two years ago when I started with Dr.
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: Seville and started seeing these disc replacements, it was life-changing.
- 52:12SPEAKER_01: And this is a really much easier recovery process for patients.
- 52:16SPEAKER_03: That's good with great outcomes.
- 52:18SPEAKER_03: When could a when could a patient expect to like be able to sleep well, roll out of bed, uh walk, do work?
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: It depends.
- 52:28SPEAKER_01: Um, a couple weeks after surgery, most patients are doing all of that.
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: So we see them two weeks later.
- 52:35SPEAKER_01: I think if we see if we see most people a week later, we're still a little slow.
- 52:40SPEAKER_01: But by two weeks, we have a lot of patients that walk right in, are doing great, are happy.
- 52:46SPEAKER_01: And by we have them on lifting restrictions for six weeks for the most part.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: So for six weeks, you're not supposed to lift more than let's say 10 pounds, a gallon of milk, which I think is eight pounds, but say about 10 pounds.
- 52:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:58SPEAKER_01: Um, and once that six weeks comes, most people are, yeah, getting out of bed, going to work well before six weeks.
- 53:05SPEAKER_01: But if you have a physical job, yeah, uh, by six weeks, we can start seeing if they're ready to be back to to kind of normal, somewhere between six and twelve weeks, depending on their surgery.
- 53:16SPEAKER_03: And then what about like exercise?
- 53:17SPEAKER_03: Like go to the gym, yeah, work out.
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: You can be walking up to three miles a day right after all of our surgeries.
- 53:24SPEAKER_01: So I have people who will text me a day or two after surgery and say, you know, I just walked one mile or two miles, I'm feeling great.
- 53:30SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: So it's it's not this long, terrible recovery like it used to be.
- 53:35SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 53:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, people are up and moving much sooner.
- 53:38SPEAKER_03: That's awesome.
- 53:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:39SPEAKER_03: That's really good.
- 53:40SPEAKER_03: And then um, do y'all usually have it all a lot of the patients do the respaw?
- 53:46SPEAKER_03: Like the M cell or the M sculpt?
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we do have them.
- 53:49SPEAKER_01: Um, after a lot of back surgery, they'll come in and usually we'll wait about six weeks for that.
- 53:55SPEAKER_01: But then once they hit six weeks, if they are um saying that they really just are ready to get their core strong again, they're ready to get back up and moving, and they just maybe need a little help with that, then we'll just pop them on the machine and and give them a little bit extra push for that.
- 54:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, good.
- 54:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's good.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: We've uh we've seen a lot of um Dr.
- 54:17SPEAKER_03: Seville's patients um some post ops, some trying to avoid surgery and stuff.
- 54:23SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, they're I mean, we're always you know, that's what's what we do, right?
- 54:28SPEAKER_03: We're like we're movement, like we're gonna like want to check out their mobility and like their core and like how we can progress things appropriately and avoid medic, you know, medicate medications, prescription meds, or injections and stuff.
- 54:40SPEAKER_03: Because it's just different for different people.
- 54:42SPEAKER_03: But um that's cool, that's good, you know.
- 54:44SPEAKER_03: That's what's like a lot different of a a different um outlook and results.
- 54:51SPEAKER_01: And you guys are so important in that whole process because so many patients come in after surgery and say, Okay, I feel much better now.
- 54:59SPEAKER_01: Now I need you to tell me exactly what I can and can't do.
- 55:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and we say, Well, go see Kyle.
- 55:04SPEAKER_03: And then and then when can I work out?
- 55:05SPEAKER_01: When can I work out?
- 55:06SPEAKER_03: When can I not do?
- 55:08SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 55:08SPEAKER_03: They're like, all right, we gotta lay this out.
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and people need very specific instructions.
- 55:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:13SPEAKER_03: And so, you know, post op therapy is huge when it comes to And it's hard to do it like because everyone is just presents differently, people's goals are differently, their physical like their physical um abilities are different before surgery.
- 55:26SPEAKER_03: Um and what they did before surgery, you know what I mean?
- 55:29SPEAKER_03: It just all that we can't do on the phone, you know what I mean?
- 55:31SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 55:32SPEAKER_00: It's like we have to have a good assessment.
- 55:34SPEAKER_03: We gotta check them out.
- 55:34SPEAKER_03: You know, we gotta we gotta put our hands on you, we gotta like see how you're moving a grooving, yeah, all that stuff, you know.
- 55:41SPEAKER_03: Well, cool.
- 55:42SPEAKER_03: Well, thanks for coming in.
- 55:43SPEAKER_03: Um if someone wants to reach out, what's the best way to get in contact with you guys?
- 55:47SPEAKER_01: Uh you could just reach out to Seville Spine Institute.
- 55:51SPEAKER_01: Um our phone numbers, emails are on the website.
- 55:56SPEAKER_01: Give the office a call and they'll get you through, get get you an appointment with us.
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: Um, I oftentimes see new patients because I kind of triage, see what they need, see if they need imaging, yeah, and then have them come back and see Dr.
- 56:09SPEAKER_01: Seville after they've got, you know, the whole layout of of everything he can he needs to see to make a good assessment.
- 56:15SPEAKER_01: So um I'm very comfortable seeing new patients, been doing it a long time, and usually can can get us on the right track so that they can come back in and have a good surgical eval with Dr.
- 56:25SPEAKER_01: Seville.
- 56:26SPEAKER_03: Cool, good, that's awesome.
- 56:28SPEAKER_03: Uh well, yeah, thanks for coming in.
- 56:29SPEAKER_03: And uh, we'll have to get y'all in maybe both of you guys at the same time.
- 56:32SPEAKER_03: That'd be a cool podcast.
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: That'd be fun.
