Lauren: I you started your business as a mom, which is amazing. Well, previously your spot here in Darien. So give us a little Emily origin story. Yeah, so I was working at the hospital in New York City, working labor and delivery, mother baby, but I always had like that want and knack for skin, skin care. And I had a dermatologist take me under his wing in the city, and I trained with him for a few years, and then COVID hit. I had to ruin my house. I moved to a hair salon when we outgrew that, and then eventually we outgrew that, and now we're in our place in Darien, Connecticut, and it's been amazing. A whirlwind, but amazing. As soon as I had my daughter, that's when I signed my lease for the spot in Darien. No big deal. No big deal. It's fun because when I Laur Cam 9.21.26 : Tennis ladies caught wind that I knew how to do Botox and I started doing smart girl outdoor botox parties and then it just took off from there and I s then started injecting out of my house. So it's been fun the last few years I've known you. and Lauren: So I think for me, when I think back at starting off, motherhood changed obviously the way I looked at my business and how I wanted to grow my business. So talk to me a little bit about that. Like how like what kind of business you wanted to build once you decided. Right. It's funny because I never in a million years when I went to school to be a nurse practitioner thought I'd be a business owner. It's kind of something that just like took on a life of its own. And even when I was working out of my room, I don't think I ever, or working out of my house, I don't think I ever really imagined having a studio. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : So I think for me, when I think back at starting off, motherhood changed obviously the way I looked at my business and how I wanted to grow my business. And even when I was working out of my room, I don't think I ever, or working out of my house, I don't think I ever really imagined having a studio. Lauren: Having a space, speaking at conferences. That was never, I was just kind of like in the moment and doing it, and I think it was just growing organically. But then I think once I had my daughter, I thought about long-term, like, okay, I want to have something that's sustainable and that I can also be outside of the treatment room. That I don't always have to be like married to the treatment room because I do want to be able to spend time with her. So that's kind of changed my thought process on you know where I want my business to go and how I want to build it, how I Laur Cam 9.21.26 : Having a space, speaking at conferences. So that's kind of changed my thought process on you know where I want my business to go and how I want to build it, how I Lauren: I want to scale it, but then it's also that struggle of still wanting to be that provider for my patients. And my patients are friends, family, literally they're everything to me. So it's it's always that struggle, that like mom guilt struggle, but that struggle to also want to be ev all in everything on my business. And a lot of your staff members, your your teammates are also moms, which is pr probably helpful. Yeah, we're in all Laur Cam 9.21.26 : I want to scale it, but then it's also that struggle of still wanting to be that provider for my patients. So it's it's always that struggle, that like mom guilt struggle, but that struggle to also want to be ev all in everything on my business. And a lot of your staff members, your your teammates are also moms, which is pr probably helpful. Yeah, we're in all Lauren: Women, female business as of now, and everyone except one of my employees is a mom. So it's it's nice to have each other. You kinda like all get it, but it's still, yeah, like you just have that that mom guilt just never goes away. I know, I know it never does. I but it also makes me want to like inspire her and have her be like, Wow, my mom is a badass. My mom, you know, works really hard and does this and I want her to be proud of it, but I also don't want her to be the kid that's like Ugh my mom never comes anything. My mom's never Laur Cam 9.21.26 : Women, female business as of now, and everyone except one of my employees is a mom. So it's it's nice to have each other. My mom, you know, works really hard and does this and I want her to be proud of it, but I also don't want her to be the kid that's like Ugh my mom never comes anything. My mom's never Lauren: There. Right. So it's like finding that balance is so hard and I am trying every day to do both. It's funny. I have a few clients who are like, wait till your daughter gets into skincare, like like going to Sephora. And I like think of you often when it comes to that because I'm like, my god, you're so screwed. She's already like taking my product. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : There. Lauren: She's wash your face, your face. She's two. So I'm like, my gosh, I am screwed. But hopefully she will have great skin. because I did not have good skin growing up. You didn't? No. And I feel like that's kind of what inspired me to go into this in the first place. Like I had terrible acne. I was at the dermatologist's office all the time. And I just, yeah, I had bad skin growing up. You would never know. Your skin is stunning. Terrible. Obviously. So let's talk a little bit about like a mom glow up. I met you after I had my second and I Laur Cam 9.21.26 : She's wash your face, your face. She's two. So I'm like, my gosh, I am screwed. So let's talk a little bit about like a mom glow up. I met you after I had my second and I Lauren: I was trying, it was the first time I went back to getting Botox. Okay. I started my Botox journey. Sorry, Mike and my parents who I've lied to for years, but when I was 22, because I was like, all right, I had really bad skin. I was on Accutane twice growing up, as a teen into my early adulthood, and it really did help with my scarring. I felt like it really helped clear up my skin and my forehead specifically. so I I just feel like a lot of us moms, like after. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : I was trying, it was the first time I went back to getting Botox. Okay. I started my Botox journey. I was on Accutane twice growing up, as a teen into my early adulthood, and it really did help with my scarring. I felt like it really helped clear up my skin and my forehead specifically. so I I just feel like a lot of us moms, like after. Lauren: After you have your kids, you're like, okay, now what? I want to feel like good in my own skin again. What are some of the like treatments you recommend? Like whether it's in between pregnancy or postpartum, that's probably two different things. Right. to help us like feel good again. So I think we're so many people think their mind goes to Botox. I even started like my Instagram as the Botox Girl, but I think that's now become a such a small part of our business. Not but it's we do so much more than that. And our really Laur Cam 9.21.26 : After you have your kids, you're like, okay, now what? I want to feel like good in my own skin again. What are some of the like treatments you recommend? Like whether it's in between pregnancy or postpartum, that's probably two different things. Right. to help us like feel good again. So I think we're so many people think their mind goes to Botox. I even started like my Instagram as the Botox Girl, but I think that's now become a such a small part of our business. Not but it's we do so much more than that. And our really Lauren: Our focus is creating healthy habits, a good foundation, and we really want to work on prevention. Like, our biggest thing is we'd much rather prevent the aging than try to correct it once it's already there. So, Botox, Dysport, the neurotoxins are all great things to do, and usually it's easy, it's quick, there's no downtime. You get a nice quick refresh. But I would say, like, there's no there's no quick fix. I usually tell my patients, come in for a so many postpartum women come in for a consult, and we're like Laur Cam 9.21.26 : Our focus is creating healthy habits, a good foundation, and we really want to work on prevention. But I would say, like, there's no there's no quick fix. I usually tell my patients, come in for a so many postpartum women come in for a consult, and we're like Lauren: Okay, let's just start with something small. It could even be a facial, just to get their skin back on track, just so we can really look at it, see what they're using, really digest their routine, and then give them like a custom plan. But I would say if you're really looking for something with no downtime, that's quick. You can go right back to where people are like always, I'm at a doctor's appointment. Yeah. But they're really at their Botox or Discord appointment. That's usually like the best way to get like a nice refresh, and then we can assess the rest of the face. I mean Laur Cam 9.21.26 : Okay, let's just start with something small. It could even be a facial, just to get their skin back on track, just so we can really look at it, see what they're using, really digest their routine, and then give them like a custom plan. But they're really at their Botox or Discord appointment. That's usually like the best way to get like a nice refresh, and then we can assess the rest of the face. I mean Lauren: And you and I have talked about this, so I say Botox, but I actually switched over to Disport with you. What are the differences between those two? And there's I know there's a few others. Yeah, we just started using Daxify, which is like the newest neurotoxin. It has a peptide in it, so it really helps with that skin quality. So like that glow that you were talking about that made you want to start it originally. And they say the duration's a little bit longer, but the reason why we love Disport in our practice is that it tends to last a little bit longer. It's a little bit of a softer finish. So Laur Cam 9.21.26 : And you and I have talked about this, so I say Botox, but I actually switched over to Disport with you. What are the differences between those two? And there's I know there's a few others. Yeah, we just started using Daxify, which is like the newest neurotoxin. It has a peptide in it, so it really helps with that skin quality. And they say the duration's a little bit longer, but the reason why we love Disport in our practice is that it tends to last a little bit longer. It's a little bit of a softer finish. So Lauren: you don't have that Botox look. You don't have those heavy brows, that angry look. It's much softer, much more natural. So that's why our patients tend to want to use that. Yeah, people I feel like are surprised when I say that I've been doing it as long 'cause I have some expression. Yeah. But like I said, I feel like I I look a lot more like refreshed and awake and having a little bit of a poker face isn't a bad thing. It also shrinks your oil gland. That's why people use it for like the hyperhydrosis, like sweating under their arms. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : you don't have that Botox look. Lauren: gonna shrink those glands. So that's probably why you felt like it helped with your acne and it helped with the breakouts on your forehead because we're actually limiting the amount of oil you're producing. Interesting. Yeah, so it gives you like that glow. And then I know melasma's another big postpartum qualm. that was you and I are dealing with that with myself. Yes. talk to us a little bit about that. Mm-hmm. So melasma is hormonal, right? So it's so Laur Cam 9.21.26 : gonna shrink those glands. So it's so Lauren: Hard to treat. You can't cure it, it'll never fully go away, but it is something we can manage. I think the biggest thing is heat, right? Like when you're out in the sun, that's gonna trigger your melasma. That's why most people have it worse in the summer and your hormones. That's why most people get it when they're pregnant. So you really wanna start with non-heat based treatments. So we like starting with chemical peels, some microneedling, something to really help quiet those melanocytes that are overproducing the melanin. That's why it's called melasma. and using products at home. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : Hard to treat. You can't cure it, it'll never fully go away, but it is something we can manage. I think the biggest thing is heat, right? Like when you're out in the sun, that's gonna trigger your melasma. That's why most people have it worse in the summer and your hormones. So we like starting with chemical peels, some microneedling, something to really help quiet those melanocytes that are overproducing the melanin. That's why it's called melasma. and using products at home. Lauren: Because what you're doing at home is 80% of your routine and seeing us in office is 20%. So we like to get you on like a good home regimen, something to also again stop your cells from producing the melanin and comboing of the two will really quiet the melasma, but then we have to work on keeping it quiet, maintaining it, because I feel like it's one of those things as soon as you like let up a little bit, it comes back so easily. So it's just about finding the routine that works for you and then sticking. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : Because what you're doing at home is 80% of your routine and seeing us in office is 20%. Lauren: With it to maintain it. So the cream that you've had me use, I really love the hydrinity, the brightening cream. Yeah. Yeah, that's really maybe different. Yeah. So if someone's melasma is really like that, it's really hard to treat. I'll start them with hydroquinone, that's a prescription, but I do not like to use that long term because it can actually cause rebound pigmentation if you use it too long and make the melasma worse. Crazy. Crazy, I know. So I'll have you use it for like eight weeks and I have you taper off, and then I'll switch you over to something non. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : With it to maintain it. So the cream that you've had me use, I really love the hydrinity, the brightening cream. Yeah. Yeah, that's really maybe different. Yeah. So if someone's melasma is really like that, it's really hard to treat. Lauren: Hydroquinone cream, like the brightening serum, and that you can be on long term, and it's still gonna quiet those melanocytes and not produce the melanin, it just does it with a slightly different mechanism of action, and you can be on it long term. And just for those who maybe don't know what melanoma is, like where are the typical spots? So mine is here. Yeah, the forehead, especially, like up here. Some people get that like pregnancy mask, so they get it like all around here. This is where I got it really bad when I was Laur Cam 9.21.26 : Hydroquinone cream, like the brightening serum, and that you can be on long term, and it's still gonna quiet those melanocytes and not produce the melanin, it just does it with a slightly different mechanism of action, and you can be on it long term. And just for those who maybe don't know what melanoma is, like where are the typical spots? So mine is here. Yeah, the forehead, especially, like up here. Some people get that like pregnancy mask, so they get it like all around here. This is where I got it really bad when I was Lauren: was pregnant, right here. And then like the mustache. That is like the number one area, especially people who have done laser hair removal in the past that use like the old school lasers that didn't have the cooling tip. It triggered a lot I see a lot of that the melasma on the upper lip. Yeah. Ooh. Yeah. I did have a little bit of that w pregnant, but I'm like, wait, I wonder if that's live 'cause I did laser hair removal. It could. Huh. Yeah. That's crazy. And that's just a hormonally charged area. So it's just really sensitive to Laur Cam 9.21.26 : was pregnant, right here. And then like the mustache. That is like the number one area, especially people who have done laser hair removal in the past that use like the old school lasers that didn't have the cooling tip. It triggered a lot I see a lot of that the melasma on the upper lip. Yeah. Ooh. Yeah. So it's just really sensitive to Lauren: The melasma and the hormones. So are there typically changes you see like hormonally from breastfeeding or like when their hormones are regulating? Is there different issues that come up, or like does skin change maybe in those moments because that is such a big hormone shift? Yeah, I mean pregnancy in general is a huge change to your hormones. And the thing is that so many products, there's so many products we have to stop using when we're pregnant. So the biggest thing we see is like textural changes because we can't ex fully Laur Cam 9.21.26 : The melasma and the hormones. So the biggest thing we see is like textural changes because we can't ex fully Lauren: Anymore. Right. The pigment because we can't use some like a retinol, something like that. A lot of dead skin cells start to build up because we're not able to exfoliate. So we find that skin's a lot drier like post-pregnancy and with breastfeeding. Breastfeeding in general, you're so dehydrated. So on top of that, you know, really see those changes in the skin. But the nice thing is when you're breastfeeding, most OBs, I would say Asker OB, but most of them clear patients to do TOX, lasers, like a lot of treatments because. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : Anymore. Lauren: It's not passed through the breast milk. So most treatments are safe. I always say ask your OB, but for the most part, when you're breastfeeding, you usually have like the go-ahead to do these aesthetic treatments. Botox. Yeah. I'm so scared too. I've never had an OB tell me to have tell a patient no. Yeah. Really? Because there's easy. There's plenty of studies that say it's not passed through the breast milk, or if it is at such small amounts. Whereas obviously when you're pregnant, you could people do with bad migraines get Botox or disport. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : It's not passed through the breast milk. So most treatments are safe. I always say ask your OB, but for the most part, when you're breastfeeding, you usually have like the go-ahead to do these aesthetic treatments. Botox. Yeah. I'm so scared too. There's plenty of studies that say it's not passed through the breast milk, or if it is at such small amounts. Whereas obviously when you're pregnant, you could people do with bad migraines get Botox or disport. Lauren: No one wants to be the test on me. So that's the one thing I get really bad migraines that I've noticed with Botox. It helped immensely. And then both pregnancies not doing it, I had debilitating migraines. And you can't take the medication that I take when I'm pregnant when I'm pregnant. So that was like a crazy huh. That's so interesting. And my OB didn't let me do laser hair removal and I begged her. when you're I was like, I can't get down there. Okay. When you're pregnant, yeah. Yeah, I know. Just because it's not tested. Yeah. Which is funny to me because as a nurse practitioner Laur Cam 9.21.26 : No one wants to be the test on me. So that's the one thing I get really bad migraines that I've noticed with Botox. It helped immensely. And then both pregnancies not doing it, I had debilitating migraines. And you can't take the medication that I take when I'm pregnant when I'm pregnant. Yeah, I know. Just because it's not tested. Yeah. Which is funny to me because as a nurse practitioner Lauren: It when I was pregnant, I could fire all the lasers. I'm like, what is the difference if I'm standing here using the laser versus I it's a weird concept. Just putting it on your skin as a tissue. Yeah. Hmm. But I guess it's the head scratching. Yeah. So I'd love to talk a little bit. I love like a rapid fire, like worth it or like overhyped. I love this. Okay. and Laur Cam 9.21.26 : It when I was pregnant, I could fire all the lasers. Okay. and Lauren: So if we talked a little bit, if a mom comes to you and is like, I look exhausted, fix me. Where would you start? A rush, this is a hard one because it's not there's no quick fix. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : So if we talked a little bit, if a mom comes to you and is like, I look exhausted, fix me. Where would you start? A rush, this is a hard one because it's not there's no quick fix. Lauren: But I guess if someone it's their under eyes, I don't know. I feel like microneedling is the most underrated treatment. It helps build collagen. It helps with your texture. It's gonna help with your pores. Like it helps with so many things, like I would say. And it's you know, we're not injecting anything into you. So it's just a great treatment. I would say like start with some microneedling. Okay. Yeah. I guess I need to add that to my mind. Yeah, yeah. filler, a lot of controversy, I feel like, especially lately. who Laur Cam 9.21.26 : But I guess if someone it's their under eyes, I don't know. Yeah, yeah. filler, a lot of controversy, I feel like, especially lately. who Lauren: Who's actually a good candidate? And when would you tell someone like they don't eat it? Yeah. I would say 95% of the time I'm telling patients no with filler. I think in the right person, the right place, the right product, it looks good. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : Who's actually a good candidate? And when would you tell someone like they don't eat it? Yeah. I would say 95% of the time I'm telling patients no with filler. I think in the right person, the right place, the right product, it looks good. Lauren: But we're just not a filler-heavy practice. I just think we really work more on, like I said, pro trying to build your collagen, trying to work on prevention. And I find that I always say filler is like renting a house, where something like sculpture, biostimulators, microneedling is buying a house. Once the filler is like out of your face or you know, dissolved or not in there anymore after six to twelve months, you you're left with nothing. It's back to the way we were, you know. So I say it's more like buying, you're getting more bang for your buck. So it's not that I don't like filler. I think when a when it used appropriately, it can look nice, but I just think there's our industry is moving towards there's just so many better options. And when you say biosimulators, is that what I've done the last year? Okay, yes. I explained that. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : Collagen, so it's an investment long term. I almost say it's like sculpture is like Botox, right? Like everyone knows the word Botox. We use a different product, but you still say Botox. Sculpture is the same way. We know there are so many other biostimulators. Sculpture is just the most well-known. And what a biostimulator is, it's a product. In this case, it's usually a powder that we mix with water for, you know, the most basic explanation of it. And it's gonna bind to your collagen elastin fibers. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : That's amazing. I try to compare it to when someone gets a cut and your body's trying to bring growth factors, platelets to the area to heal it. Very similar concept. What's cool about Radius is that it simulates type 1 and type 3 collagen. Sculpture doesn't simulate both. And it's encapsulated in a gel, so you get that like a little bit of instant contour, that like instant gratification someone would get with filler, but at the same time, we're stimulating that collagen and elastin. But with the radius, we can give you that nice contour on your jawline or your cheek, or we can hyperdilute it, make it a lot thinner, and put it in your neck. So it's really versatile, but the results are so nice. Yeah, I was I'm very, I don't want to say like anti-filler, but I just have seen like filler gone wrong. So I've never wanted to do that. But my parents will be the first ones to be like, I feel like we should just like and so knowing that that's like coming down the pipe. And to your point of trying to s prevent prevention. Yeah. So I've really loved that. And I feel like it's helped the natural collagen face really come back. Yeah, which let's go. After kids, I think that was for me the biggest thing is I just being so tired, getting back to my exercise routine. I just feel like my face really kind of it wasn't like melting. Lauren: We were able to touch on that because I had never heard of that until going to your office. Yeah, and I think so many there was this whole thing on social media that if you get sculpture, you can't get a facelift. But I think it really stems from this weird insecurity that plastic surgeons have. And I've talked to plastic surgeons and they say there's no issue with getting a facelift and sculpture. I think some plastic surgeons are just maybe insecure that if pe patients continue to do these treatments in 10, 20 years, there's not gonna be this need for as much plastic surgery. Mm-hmm. I know that's something that's on our winter to-do list. what are some problems with like with treatments when it comes to that? Laur Cam 9.21.26 : lasers, I also want to talk a little bit about. I know that's something that's on our winter to-do list. what are some problems with like with treatments when it comes to that? Lauren: so lasers I feel like are having a moment right now. Right. Everyone like Hayley Bieber, that glass skin. And it's such a great way to improve your skin tone, your skin texture. Again, with everyone hating filler right now, you know, it's a non-injectable way to give yourself great skin. And at our studio we have everything from like a light little lunchtime laser all the way up to something with three, four days of downtime. And we can really like customize it to your lifestyle, you know, your concerns, and we can make a plan that l works for you. Got it. Shooting myself up with peptides, which I do want to talk a little bit about. but I switched over all my products to what you recommended, and I have seen such a change in my skin texture, like you said, the clarity and the improvement of melasma. So, what are three things that you would say for moms? Lauren: to spend money on when it comes to skincare. I feel like if you're not pregnant, or breastfeeding, like a retinol. Retinol, tretinoin, most people know. Laur Cam 9.21.26 : to spend money on when it comes to skincare. I feel like if you're not pregnant, or breastfeeding, like a retinol. Retinol, tretinoin, most people know. Lauren: Sorry. Okay. So tretinoin is one of the most well known anti-aging products. And the problem with tretinoin is that so many people it dries out their skin, it irritates them. Like for me, I cannot use tretinoin. My skin just gets red, angry. So AlphaRet from Skin Better, which is like my favorite product, they've created a formula where they can still give you that prescription strength retinol with hydrating ingredients so you don't get that irritation. Lauren: I think that is probably one of the best products. I've been using that forever. That's like the holy grail. We probably sell more of that than anything else. Sell out because whenever I come in, I'm like, do you have it back yet? That I think definitely like a really good retinol that your skin can tolerate. I say it's like a blood pressure medication. If you're using it once a week, is it gonna change your blood pressure? No. If your retinal is irritating your skin so much you can only use it once a week, it's probably not doing anything. If you can find something that's actually gonna take the makeup and the junk off your skin so your products can actually penetrate and reach your skin cells. And then I would say a really good vitamin C antioxidant. You want something that's gonna protect your skin, protect your skin against UV ruv light, pollution, and vitamin C will always like brighten your skin. I guess it kind of is, but I tell all my patients if you're coming in and you're spending money in my office, like you want to protect your investment. It's like we're big on that. So if my patients aren't using sunscreen, I'm like, why are you even coming in? So if it's in your makeup, I know a lot of us moms were like, can we just get a two for one deal here? If it's in your makeup, does that count? Or do you want to add like an additional? As much as I want to say yes, the problem is the amount where it says like Laur Cam 9.21.26 : And a sunscreen. Yay! That I can do. Yeah. That works. And then wear hat. Yes. listen, I'm not always perfect and enjoy in moderation. Life's too short to s not go on the beach vacation. I think just, be responsible, be smart. You don't want to never pasty, but you I you definitely protect your skin. Yes. We do we establish retinol. Yeah. I mean some OBs will tell you you can use it. I just say like Astro B but probably not. I would not go to any provider that would give you Botox or Dysport pregnant. You can do Lauren: always ask your doctor, but micro needling is something that you could usually do while pregnant. Okay. I say it's really about keeping your skin hydrated while you're pregnant. That's why I did facials constantly. Okay. And we do have some pregnancy safe chemical peels, because like I said, the exfoliation can be a big thing when you're pregnant. No, so if you're doing it every night, it's great. It's one of those things where you have to use it every night to see a result. Okay. So like for me, I'm just not in that stage of life right now where I have time to do it every night. Yeah. So doing it once here and there, is it really worth it? Probably not. I tell you if you have bad melasma, try to stop your LED light for like a month and see if it actually makes a difference. 'Cause for some people it can the it can trigger the melasma, make it worse. I do it while I'm on my shake plate. Yeah. Weed, that's cool. Do you like that thing? I love it. Yeah. There's so much more to you than what's on the outside. But I do understand, you want that inside and outside to match. You do want how we look is sometimes associated with how we feel. I'm a big supplement girl. But sometimes I f I just felt like when it came to energy I was really lacking. A lot of these moms are running around after kids. Mm-hmm. It's tough to have the energy to then go and push your body at the gym. So it's really is helpful. And yes, I'm a big creatine girl.
