- 1:17Hey listeners, Jeff Zimper, welcome to this episode of Mortgage Marketing Radio.
- 1:41Say Happy New Year, I want to pose a question to you.
- 1:50As you're setting your new year's goals and resolutions, the question I've got for you
- 1:54is can one word change your life?
- 1:58Can one word actually have a bigger impact on your results in 2017 than the goals you
- 2:05set and the resolutions that you try and keep?
- 2:08Let's face it, most people fall off the horse when it comes to resolutions.
- 2:12Goal setting, some people do better than that than others, some people do focus.
- 2:17I want to present to you today perhaps a new opportunity for you, a new way to take a
- 2:23look at how do I achieve what I want to achieve this year?
- 2:27How do I become that person, the person that I want to be?
- 2:33The opportunity I propose to you is called the one word that will change your life.
- 2:38It comes from a book that was written by my special guest today, Jimmy Page.
- 2:42Not to be confused with Led Zeppelin fame, of course, but Jimmy Page is an author, an
- 2:48athlete, a coach.
- 2:50He's just a phenomenal person.
- 2:51He's written actually four books, which includes wisdom walks, spray fit, and one word that
- 2:56will change your life.
- 2:57He's a frequent speaker and coach at schools and is just as a phenomenal being and himself
- 3:05and his partners teamed up and several years ago wrote this book called one word that will
- 3:10change your life.
- 3:11It became a movement, but became a movement because it deals with probably one of the most
- 3:16common things that we face in a new year, and that is how do we become the best version
- 3:22of ourselves for this year?
- 3:23How do we live a life of impact instead of just creating these endless goals and years
- 3:27resolutions?
- 3:29What if we could actually choose one word that would be our driving force for this year?
- 3:35So that means we're not so dependent upon looking at our lists, to do lists and our resolutions
- 3:41and goals and things like that, and that's not the diminish activities and things we have
- 3:46to do and actions we have to take.
- 3:48But one more importantly is when you really step into this concept of one word that will
- 3:51change your life, it's about who you become, right?
- 3:54Because if you're going to have a phenomenal 2017, if you're going to achieve things you
- 3:59haven't done before, then you've got to become somebody you haven't been.
- 4:03Does that make sense?
- 4:04And that's where this concept of one word comes in is because just one word in a moment
- 4:09when you discover your one word and you take ownership of that, it literally changes
- 4:14the course of your life for the next year.
- 4:17And so we unpack this concept of one word that will change your life, Jimmy Page, my special
- 4:22gestures and thrilled to have on this show and I think you're really going to love this
- 4:25episode.
- 4:26It's one of my favorites.
- 4:27My one word for 2017, ownership, ownership, and it's really, it permeates all the aspects
- 4:34of my life, right?
- 4:35My health, my fitness, my business, my relationships, ownership because I'm ultimately responsible
- 4:39for the outcome of those areas of my life, right?
- 4:42The Jimmy calls the six categories that you'll hear about, right?
- 4:45And so for me, it's ownership.
- 4:46For you, maybe it's obviously something else, right?
- 4:48Maybe it's patience, maybe it's commitment, maybe it's follow through, maybe it's understanding,
- 4:55empathy, focus.
- 4:57You know, I don't know.
- 4:58The point is this episode is going to help you discover your one word and there's resources
- 5:02where I'm going to direct you to on Jimmy's website at getoneword.com and I'm just really
- 5:07excited.
- 5:08I'm looking forward for you and I to go on this journey together.
- 5:11I told you my one word is ownership.
- 5:13What's yours?
- 5:14Listen to the podcast, you go through the exercise, email me.
- 5:17Let me know what your one word is for this year.
- 5:19And if we get enough people interested, maybe we can host kind of a small group that checks
- 5:24in on a regular basis to see how we're doing with our one word.
- 5:28So email me your one word info at mortgagemarketinginstitute.com or just leave a comment on the blog, leave
- 5:34a rating on the podcast here.
- 5:36If you like this one, I'd appreciate it very much.
- 5:38So let's get into this show and discover your one word that will change your life.
- 5:45Hey Jimmy, welcome to the show.
- 5:47Hey, great to be with you.
- 5:49Thanks so much for making time.
- 5:50As you know, you know, we're talking previously about how I came across the whole concept
- 5:56of the one word and I just thought with it being still early in January, it'd be really
- 6:01appropriate for my audience, particularly in light of what do most people do at this
- 6:06time of year, right?
- 6:07It's that New Year's resolutions and so forth.
- 6:09So I definitely want to unpack that as we get into that, but it's interesting if you
- 6:14wouldn't mind just sharing with our listeners how this whole movement of one word began
- 6:21and how did you get connected to it?
- 6:23Absolutely.
- 6:24You know, almost 20 years ago we began this journey, Dan and I, Dan Britton, one of my co-authors
- 6:29and John Gordon, we were doing life together and we were really, you know, in each other's
- 6:34life to sharpen each other, to make each other be our best, you know, and we had a real
- 6:39desire even, you know, in the early days of following college to live a great life, you
- 6:45know, to live on purpose and make a difference.
- 6:49And every year we were doing those New Year's resolutions as well.
- 6:52And Dan and I in particular were encountering a lot of false starts, a lot of failures,
- 6:57some frustration with it, you know, because we would literally make a to-do list around
- 7:03our resolutions.
- 7:05And back in the day, we would have 30 or 40 things on there that we were going to do from
- 7:08read 24 books this year to exercise every day and, you know, on and on the list goes.
- 7:14And the truth was, we weren't having very much success because we were overwhelmed by
- 7:17the list.
- 7:19And almost everything on that list was focused on what we were going to get done rather
- 7:22than who we were going to become.
- 7:24So we were introduced to this concept to scrap the list, you know, scrap the New Year's
- 7:29resolutions.
- 7:30And nobody's successful with New Year's resolutions.
- 7:32Anyways.
- 7:3390% of us set resolutions, 50% of those resolution makers failed by the end of January.
- 7:39And then, you know, three months in, most people have forgotten, 90% failure rate.
- 7:44So we began to filter our entire year through a single word which provided focus for life
- 7:50change in all areas of our life.
- 7:53And we've seen a lot of success for the last, almost 20 years now.
- 7:55Yeah, good points there.
- 7:56And it definitely relates to the New Year's resolutions.
- 7:59And man, that was a pretty long list, 20 plus items on your resolution, send yourself
- 8:04up.
- 8:05Well, we're athletes, you know, we converted our resolutions to a game plan.
- 8:11You know, we thought, hey, let's get smart about this.
- 8:13Anybody can execute a game plan, right?
- 8:16And the game plan became offense, defense, special teams, fan involvement.
- 8:19I mean, it was, it was horrible.
- 8:21And we were totally overwhelmed by it.
- 8:23So the one word really simplified that quite a bit.
- 8:25Yeah.
- 8:26So you're an athlete.
- 8:27So obviously, you're kind of like challenged.
- 8:28Hey, let's do it.
- 8:29Let's take it on.
- 8:30Let's attack it.
- 8:31And all that stuff.
- 8:32So let's unpack that a little bit.
- 8:33So, you know, everybody does the New Year's resolutions, like you say.
- 8:37And more often than not, people don't follow through.
- 8:39So what's the difference between news resolutions and or goal setting and, you know, coming up
- 8:45with one word that kind of defines who you want to become?
- 8:48How does that change?
- 8:50How does that impact those things?
- 8:51Yeah.
- 8:52And number one thing it does is it narrows the focus.
- 8:56You know, if you follow or study the lives of the most productive, impactful people in
- 9:01the world, they have an uncanny ability to narrow the focus.
- 9:06You know, they don't try and do everything because they know if they try and do everything,
- 9:10they don't do many of those things very well.
- 9:12So narrowing the focus is probably the most significant difference between New Year's
- 9:18resolutions and one word.
- 9:21So with one word, you know, you're applying that word to each aspect of your life, whether
- 9:26it's your relationships or it's your physical health or maybe even the way you handle money,
- 9:31it has incredible impact in each area of life.
- 9:34So simplicity is probably the most significant driver.
- 9:39You know, I can't remember any of my resolutions, but I can remember virtually every one word
- 9:44I've had for the last 20 years.
- 9:46Hmm.
- 9:47That's interesting.
- 9:48So what's the process that somebody would go through to discover their one word?
- 9:52The process is incredibly simple.
- 9:53You know, when you're talking about designing your life and life change around one word,
- 9:59we felt like keeping the process was simple was very important.
- 10:02It's a three step process.
- 10:04It's looking in, looking up and looking out.
- 10:08You know, that first step of looking in is where you decide to unplug from the chaos
- 10:13of life, from the busyness of life.
- 10:16And you know, if you'll read in the book how we were inundated in life with activities
- 10:22and busyness so much so that we lose sight of our actual purpose.
- 10:26So we will coach people one on one or in groups or with companies and organizations to unplug
- 10:33from the chaos of life.
- 10:35It's the single hardest thing for most people to do because when the alarm clock goes off
- 10:41in the morning, after they've hit snooze two or three times, when they get out of bed and
- 10:47they hit the floor, they literally most of us hit the floor running.
- 10:51And we don't have any time for contemplation, for even a morning routine, whether that's
- 10:58prayer or whether that's a thanks, you know, walk of giving thanks.
- 11:02We just don't have a lot of time for ourselves.
- 11:04So we, we coach people to unplug from the busyness, get outside of technology and really
- 11:11take a look inside and discover, hey, what do I need most?
- 11:15If I was going to pursue life changes this year, what do I need most and what's in my
- 11:19way from a breakthrough?
- 11:21Okay.
- 11:22So that was first look within, right?
- 11:23Yep.
- 11:24Look in.
- 11:25Okay.
- 11:26Yeah.
- 11:27And the second step is to look up.
- 11:28And this is that, you know, all three of the authors were all men of faith.
- 11:32And we believe that we've been created for purpose, we have, we have incredible potential.
- 11:37And the best way to discover our purpose and our potential is by seeking the one who
- 11:42created us.
- 11:43So as men of faith, we will seek that and we look up and we look up for guidance.
- 11:47We plug into to God in our case and other people will plug into their intuition and that's
- 11:54everything.
- 11:55But we ask people to contemplate this year, what can be accomplished in you and through
- 12:01you this year?
- 12:03What purpose is going to drive your life?
- 12:06And as you ask those questions and as you listen for the answers intuitively, you know,
- 12:11words will come to mind and words will be revealed in both of these stages and then
- 12:15you start to see patterns.
- 12:17Now, what I do when I look up is I will journal.
- 12:20And I'll write down a lot of my thoughts about what I need and what I can accomplish and
- 12:25who I can become as a man in all the roles that I play, whether it's as a dad or as a husband
- 12:32or in my work, the work environment.
- 12:34And then certain themes start to surface and I'll jot down a number of potential words
- 12:39and then I try to distill from that what my one word will be for the year.
- 12:43Okay.
- 12:44That's good.
- 12:45All right.
- 12:46So I get a sense of kind of the process.
- 12:47It sounds like you're getting some, you know, quiet time, you're blocking out time, whether
- 12:51that's several hours, half a day or whatever it is, but you need to spend that time in
- 12:55quiet reflection to allow those things to surface for you.
- 12:58Is that what I'm hearing?
- 12:59Absolutely.
- 13:00You know, I think out of silence brings clarity.
- 13:04Silence and solitude and quiet always brings clarity.
- 13:10Confusion comes from chaos.
- 13:11You know, yes.
- 13:12So, you know, if you think about your life and the list of things you have to accomplish
- 13:16today and, you know, you're running pretty hard, you can't hear that still small voice.
- 13:21You can't gain some insight into what you need most unless you unplug and quiet your
- 13:25spirit.
- 13:26No, absolutely.
- 13:27And like you said earlier, we live in such a chaotic, noisy world.
- 13:30It's distracting us all the time.
- 13:32It's important that we do this and probably regular intervals throughout the year as well.
- 13:36Absolutely.
- 13:37This isn't a one time deal, right?
- 13:38But hopefully we're helping to establish a habit of really being centered and mindful
- 13:45and aware of the most important things in your life so that you can discern what, you
- 13:51know, the life chains that need to happen throughout the year.
- 13:54Okay.
- 13:55Let's go to step three.
- 13:56Step three is looking out and this is the phase where you've discovered your word.
- 14:01You've selected that word.
- 14:03You've picked it for the year and you begin to put things in place to keep it front and
- 14:07center and to ensure that you make progress toward life change and that this word would
- 14:13be become a powerful force in your life.
- 14:16So, for example, we make sure that people immediately tell their inner circle of friends.
- 14:23Hey, this is the process I've gone through.
- 14:25This is my one word for the year.
- 14:28This is the word that I hope is going to bring significant life change to me, making
- 14:32me my very best this year.
- 14:35And I want you to know about it so that you can hold me accountable to regularly revisiting
- 14:41the word and its impact in my life to filter decisions through that word and to have
- 14:47focused so that your life starts to make progress.
- 14:51And when you tell that inner circle, you know, one of the things we discovered, Jeff,
- 14:54is this.
- 14:55And most people don't have an inner circle of friends.
- 14:57I'm just thinking about the same thing.
- 14:59I'm thinking to myself, well, shouldn't there be a criteria on who you share that with?
- 15:05Exactly.
- 15:06Most people go, man, who are the people I trust most and would they consider themselves
- 15:10part of my inner circle and do they want me to be my best and do I want them to be their
- 15:14best?
- 15:15You know, so this process of telling your inner circle has spawned a whole new conversation
- 15:20for a lot of people to say, hey, who are those people I'm going to invest in and who
- 15:24do I want to surround myself with so that I can be my best.
- 15:28So you know, you tell that inner circle, man, and they start using it for your benefit
- 15:33and sometimes they use it against you like a club, sometimes they will, hey, I thought
- 15:37your word was patience, man, you know, you're not very patient, you know.
- 15:40Exactly.
- 15:41But, you know, that's such a great point because we do need accountability partners in
- 15:45our life.
- 15:46And, you know, that's not necessarily always a spouse, right?
- 15:49I mean, particularly with guys, you know, maybe they take more comfort in having that
- 15:53guy friend.
- 15:54And so maybe this will, for anybody listening who doesn't have those accountability partners,
- 15:58right?
- 15:59Figure out, get somebody because we don't succeed alone, right?
- 16:02That's right.
- 16:03Absolutely.
- 16:04You know, a lot of times we do get isolated and I've found in life that if you advance
- 16:08in leadership at all, you know, if you, your career or whatever that aspect is, if you
- 16:13advance in leadership, your inner circle gets very, very small very quickly.
- 16:18You kind of, you become more protective of your behind the scenes life and unfortunately
- 16:25you can't do life by yourself and you really need to do to find people who are going to
- 16:31lift you up and make you your best.
- 16:33I've heard it said, this is really interesting quote, you will be the average of your five
- 16:39closest friends.
- 16:41Yeah.
- 16:42That's a scary thought for some.
- 16:44Yeah, yeah.
- 16:45Right.
- 16:46Take a look at your friends right now and maybe you're trading some in.
- 16:48I don't know.
- 16:49So you know what?
- 16:50That's interesting because this is something I know I've heard that for many years.
- 16:55And whenever I hear that and I start to evaluate that, you know, it's like you said, you know,
- 16:59with leadership, right?
- 17:00You're going to shrink that circle.
- 17:02And for many, probably myself included, that is sometimes a hard process to go through
- 17:07and to kind of move yourself away from those friends, which would probably take you out
- 17:12of some of those habits and activities that you know are probably subconsciously, right?
- 17:18You just, you feel like, yeah, you know, if I do that, that's kind of like not me being
- 17:22my best.
- 17:23So do you have any advice for how we can, you know, step more into that identity of who
- 17:28we are or should be at our best and get to a place where we can let go, you know, break
- 17:34away from those people or habits.
- 17:37Yeah.
- 17:38You know, in 2014, my one word for the year was momentum.
- 17:44And I quickly discovered with the word momentum that you can have positive momentum or negative
- 17:49momentum, you know, that as soon as that ball starts rolling, if you're on a negative course,
- 17:56man, that thing picks up speed over time.
- 17:58And if you surround yourself with people who kind of add either, you know, speed or velocity
- 18:03to that negative momentum, your life kind of goes in a negative direction.
- 18:07So you have to, you know, I learned, I have to make a play, you know, in an athletic contest
- 18:12man, if the momentum is against us, I, somebody on that team has to make a play.
- 18:18And if it's you and your life, hey, you're the one, you've got to make a play and you make
- 18:22a decision at that point, what are the things that are pushing me in a negative way?
- 18:28What are those things that aren't helping me be my best?
- 18:30And I got to make a decision, a change point, I've got to decide, I've got to make a change
- 18:35in those areas.
- 18:36Maybe a friendship, it might be a decision around your health.
- 18:40It might be, you know, a whole host of things, but you've got to make a play to reverse
- 18:44your momentum.
- 18:46And sometimes, you know, those relationships, I just have been intentional about spending
- 18:49less time with those people, you know, and sometimes that means filling that time with
- 18:54something else and being less available, or it might be, you know, it might honestly be
- 18:59an honest conversation that, you know, listen, I'm trying to be my best and calling that
- 19:04person up higher.
- 19:06Sometimes those people just need somebody to say, hey, I want to be better.
- 19:09Sure.
- 19:10And then they're inspired to be better themselves.
- 19:11Either way, we've got to get clear on that and really take ownership of that once and
- 19:16for all.
- 19:17Otherwise, we'll probably continue to be dissatisfied, you know, with where we're at.
- 19:22Absolutely.
- 19:23And, you know, seeking out other relationships, you know, I will coach people to take,
- 19:26to get a short list together.
- 19:28And to put a short list together of people in your life who you admire for some reason
- 19:32or another, you know, whether it's they've got a great marriage or they seem to be a great
- 19:37father who's engaged and you want, you want to be better in that area or they're successful
- 19:41in business and they seem to do it with integrity and character and honesty, you know, make
- 19:45that short list of people who you naturally come in contact with that you would like to
- 19:50develop a better relationship with to become part of that internal inner circle.
- 19:56Sometimes you have to be really intentional about establishing those relationships.
- 19:59Yeah, I like the idea of the invite because sometimes, you know, hey, listen, you have
- 20:05that conversation.
- 20:06This is what I'm trying to do in my life, trying to, you know, get better and prove and
- 20:09just have a better, richer, fuller life.
- 20:12And so I'm doing this thing, right, I'm engaging in this one word practice because I want
- 20:16to achieve, you know, these things and hey, you know, I need accountability partners and
- 20:20I thought of you, mate, would you like to be part of this and I can, you know, we can
- 20:24hold each other accountable and then maybe you can help that other person discover their
- 20:27word and all of a sudden, they're making the changes they need to also.
- 20:30Yeah, it's an, it really does kind of grow itself.
- 20:33It's an organic process, you know, so I found that most people are looking for people to,
- 20:42to be influenced by, to be honest, right, good people, like if you said that to someone
- 20:45and they admired you for some reason, they're going to want to be part of that.
- 20:50And they probably, they didn't know it, but they probably want relationships like that
- 20:55so that they can be their best and all of a sudden they're like, man, I was thinking
- 20:58the same thing.
- 20:59You know, next thing, you know, you've got a great partnership to be, to be your best.
- 21:04Somebody's got to be the leader.
- 21:05Why not you, right?
- 21:06That's right.
- 21:07That's right.
- 21:08Take the ball.
- 21:09Come on.
- 21:10Alright, cool.
- 21:11So let's recap.
- 21:12Step one, look in, step two, look up, step three, look out and I know we've got some
- 21:15resources on your website, which we'll point to people too in a minute.
- 21:19But I wanted to address this issue of, okay, so I've got this one word.
- 21:24That's all fine and well, but how am I going to be sure that's going to relate to behavioral
- 21:28change and mapping out, I mean, with this, I assume there comes up some type of an action
- 21:32plan.
- 21:33Absolutely.
- 21:34You know, on our website, we've got a detailed action plan for this, but at the same
- 21:38time, you know, this, this looking out, this living out your word is really where the
- 21:43rubber meets the road.
- 21:45And I create a whole bunch of checkpoints along the way to make sure that I'm asking
- 21:50the right questions and making progress.
- 21:52So for example, on New Year's Eve, we get the families together and when we discuss
- 21:57our words, we share with each other, hey, why did you select the word you did and what
- 22:01do you hope to, what progress do you hope to make this year with that word?
- 22:07And a lot of times it doesn't turn out the way you thought, you know, you grow in different
- 22:09ways, but we share that and we will paint our words on a, on a nine by 12 piece of canvas.
- 22:17It's a framed canvas.
- 22:18You can get it at any craft store.
- 22:20And we paint our words and we actually put them up in our kitchen so that it becomes
- 22:24part of our regular ongoing conversation.
- 22:27You know, I would say in our household, we probably, you know, refer to the words on
- 22:33the wall, probably once a month, in a, in a dinner conversation and people share.
- 22:38And also it gives you an opportunity to speak some insight into the people around you.
- 22:43So that they can see maybe how their word is being affected where they didn't realize
- 22:47it.
- 22:49You know, I'll put my word on my screensaver on my phone.
- 22:52And then each week as I, as I do a little bit of journaling and reflection, I ask the
- 22:57question and I look at six specific aspects of my life.
- 23:01I look at my spiritual life, my physical health, my emotional health, my mental state
- 23:07and growth, my financial health and relationships.
- 23:12And I look at those six pieces and I say, how is this word playing out in these areas?
- 23:19And is there any action I can take to use that word to improve that aspect of my life?
- 23:24Interesting.
- 23:25And how often are you kind of asking those questions and reflecting?
- 23:27Do you actually schedule that or is just part of your consciousness now?
- 23:31Well, you know, I've made this more a part of my regular routine, you know, so this is usually
- 23:35on a weekly or on every other week basis.
- 23:38I take a look at the impact on those six areas because, you know, I'm a veteran of
- 23:42this.
- 23:43This has become part of my DNA and I realize that each word in the end, in the end of
- 23:49every year, becomes a chapter of my life.
- 23:52So you know, we talk about one of the words that I used in my past was detox.
- 23:57So I use this word detox and a lot of people look at you funny when you use a word like
- 24:01detox.
- 24:02All right.
- 24:03What's going on in your life?
- 24:04You know, and I said, it's not, it's not due to alcohol or drugs that isn't it.
- 24:08However, it is about habits in my life that are toxic, potentially, that are preventing
- 24:14me from being my best.
- 24:16So I would say, right, in what areas of my physical health do I need to, do I need detox?
- 24:22You know, what things do I need to eliminate?
- 24:24Am I eating things that are detrimental to my life?
- 24:27So you start asking those questions around each, each area of your life.
- 24:32Did you say your word was detox one time?
- 24:34Yeah.
- 24:35Yeah, detox.
- 24:36You wouldn't think that'd be a word, right, if it's something that you would say.
- 24:40Yeah.
- 24:41Well, it's not one you want to share publicly.
- 24:42I thought I'd share it with you on your audience.
- 24:45Thank you for your honesty.
- 24:46Appreciate that.
- 24:47That's right.
- 24:48That's right.
- 24:49It's not a fact.
- 24:50I want to do a little experiment because I know I shared this with you over email.
- 24:53And so I went through the exercise and for me, the word that kept coming up was ownership.
- 24:59And it might be because I've recently read this book, Extreme Ownership by Jockel Wilnick
- 25:04and his partner there, both X, Navy SEALs and stuff.
- 25:06But there's some really great leadership principles and principles in there.
- 25:09And of course, we all know that we're ultimately responsible for how our life turns out and
- 25:14our level of happiness and satisfaction and all that.
- 25:17So for me, I don't know.
- 25:19It's a word that I wrestle with a little bit because if I take on that word and I'll
- 25:24just put this on me right now, you talk about how you do consulting and everything.
- 25:27So I'll allow you to respond to this in a second.
- 25:30But I take on that word ownership and so that's a little bit kind of like, oh, are you
- 25:34there?
- 25:35I mean, you know, I'm sure you're up for sure.
- 25:36You can handle it.
- 25:37Oh, my God.
- 25:38Absolutely.
- 25:39It's a big word.
- 25:40It is because I'm like, oh, my gosh, that means I'm responsible for, you know, for, okay,
- 25:46like you just said, my health, my fitness, my, and the level of, right, achievement or whatever
- 25:50word you want to use satisfaction or happiness or whatever.
- 25:54So what advice would you give?
- 25:56Let's say I am, you know, one of your consulting clients or you're at a company and you picked
- 26:00me in the room, my words ownership, any follow-up to that you would have?
- 26:06Oh, my gosh.
- 26:07I mean, it's a tremendous word.
- 26:09And I just had an opportunity.
- 26:10I'm scared of me now, man.
- 26:11Oh, it is such a great word, right?
- 26:14I just had an opportunity where I was, I did a, I had a speaking opportunity with an organization.
- 26:19We talked about this very thing about this idea of taking personal ownership for your
- 26:24life.
- 26:25And I put it in terms of you are the driver.
- 26:27You're the driver of this thing.
- 26:29Now, you know, as a man of faith, of course, I'm trusting that God is going to, you know,
- 26:33give me direction.
- 26:34But in the end, we're in partnership, you know, I've got to take action.
- 26:36So you're the driver, man.
- 26:38And here's what it does.
- 26:39Here's what this word eliminates.
- 26:41It eliminates excuses, right?
- 26:44You can't now say, oh, the reason I'm not where I want to be with my personal health is
- 26:48because of X, Y and Z.
- 26:49Well, that goes away because you're going to take ownership for the steps necessary
- 26:54to be in great shape.
- 26:56It eliminates your ability to blame others, you know, you, because you're taking personal
- 27:02responsibility for the process.
- 27:05Now, the outcome, you know, you cannot achieve the outcome exactly the way you thought
- 27:09you would.
- 27:10But the truth is, if you're taking ownership, you're taking personal responsibility, and
- 27:13you know what, here's another example.
- 27:15If you don't like the direction of your life, then there's no one else to, you can't look
- 27:20around you and say, hey, are you, can you help, you know, why aren't you getting this done
- 27:24for me?
- 27:26You have to own those things.
- 27:27I love it because at the end of the day, you know, do you really want your future to be
- 27:32in the hands of...
- 27:33Right.
- 27:34And ultimately, it's not.
- 27:35So quit giving myself.
- 27:36That's right.
- 27:37Yeah.
- 27:38Exactly right.
- 27:39You're just a...
- 27:40Very good, very good.
- 27:43What are some other examples of words you've heard just to spark people's ideas, perhaps?
- 27:48You know, a lot of people will choose words like simplify.
- 27:52I think there is a prevailing sentiment that everyone feels overwhelmed or over-scheduled
- 27:58or, you know, just...
- 27:59Overcommitted.
- 28:00Overcommitted.
- 28:01Overcommitted.
- 28:02Absolutely.
- 28:03And because of that, people have a real desire to simplify their life.
- 28:07And I've seen that words, simplicity or simplify, have incredible life change in people's
- 28:13lives, because here's what it does.
- 28:15They start looking around all the areas of their life that are complicated or that are
- 28:20over-booked, over-scheduled, overwhelmed, whatever.
- 28:23And they start clearing out the clutter.
- 28:26A great example of this is if you were to open the door to your walk-in closet, for
- 28:31example.
- 28:32Oh, I agree.
- 28:33You would be...
- 28:34Yeah.
- 28:35Right.
- 28:36Yeah.
- 28:37You might have to kick some stuff back into the closet before you close the door.
- 28:40Nobody likes that feeling.
- 28:42You know, studies show that you will only wear about 10% of the clothes that you own.
- 28:47So...
- 28:48That's so true.
- 28:49I just thought of that the other day.
- 28:50Yeah.
- 28:51I got to get rid of some stuff.
- 28:53If you have a stack of shirts, for example, if you just put your hand in the middle of
- 28:57that stack and took the bottom half, you would never know those shirts were gone.
- 29:00You give them away to goodwill, you'd never know that they weren't there.
- 29:04So people will go in and literally declutter their closet in an effort to simplify their
- 29:11space.
- 29:12You know, it's interesting about that when you declutter your closet, and I think we've
- 29:15all done this from time to time.
- 29:17It's amazing how you feel lighter and freed up.
- 29:20You know?
- 29:21Oh my gosh, buddy.
- 29:22It gives you so much life and so much more energy, so much more positive energy.
- 29:27You know, for the guys out there that are thinking about a closet who cares, that's somebody
- 29:31else's problem.
- 29:32I look at my garage and oh my gosh.
- 29:35You know, I got to the place where I'm determined to be able to always park the two cars in
- 29:40the garage.
- 29:41You know, I do not want to be the guy with the car out on the side of the road or in
- 29:44my driveway.
- 29:45Well, I spent some time cleaning out and then I got so much life from it.
- 29:50I did the different thing when it came to, you know, taking ownership in the area of fitness
- 29:55where we had a pool table in the garage, the kids never used it, so I gave that away
- 29:58and put my home gym in the garage.
- 30:01Now there's no excuses.
- 30:03Buddy.
- 30:04Yeah.
- 30:05Yeah.
- 30:06I'm telling you.
- 30:07I wish I had thought of that.
- 30:08All right.
- 30:09So it was a great idea.
- 30:10Something else came up here.
- 30:12What about when you have words that are kind of vague, if you will?
- 30:19I guess give you a couple of examples of that of words, you know, perhaps that I've seen
- 30:22such as like maybe drive or rebirth or accelerate.
- 30:26I mean, you know, one could argue, well, dude, that's kind of vague and unspecific.
- 30:30Like how would somebody, he could either improve that word or write craft an actual outcome
- 30:36around that?
- 30:37Yeah, game plan.
- 30:38Yeah.
- 30:39You didn't mention it exactly, but it's it's kind of along the lines of rebirth or,
- 30:43you know, revitalization is a word renewed.
- 30:46And we hear renew a lot.
- 30:49And I will say this, there are thousands of words that have been used very uniquely.
- 30:55And I do believe that if you're sensitive to what you need most and what what needs to
- 30:59change most, the word is going to be very personal and applicable to you.
- 31:04So we're like renew will be this, well, how do you ask the question in each of the, again,
- 31:07I go back to the six dimensions of life.
- 31:10And I say, what are some decisions I can make?
- 31:12What are some actions I can take that will bring renewal to my financial life?
- 31:18Okay.
- 31:19Got it.
- 31:20So, you know, what are some decisions that I'm making that are preventing that renewal?
- 31:23What needs to be revitalized to you?
- 31:24That's everything.
- 31:25So that's a good filter question, if you will, to run it through that.
- 31:29Yeah.
- 31:30Absolutely.
- 31:31You know, because those are the roles that you play, you know, those are the dimensions
- 31:34of your life that you hope will have some positive impact from doing this exercise.
- 31:39And the more you ask those questions and then say, well, what action can I take?
- 31:43And I usually boil it down, you know, in the, in the spirit of one word, I'll say, what's
- 31:47one thing that I can do in my physical life to bring renewal, for example?
- 31:55And that one thing becomes a rallying cry.
- 31:59And it's very narrow.
- 32:00And usually you make a lot of progress toward it.
- 32:02Okay.
- 32:03But I like that because that then does give you that focus for, okay, I've got the one
- 32:07word.
- 32:08And then you ask that question, you know, around the six areas of life, how can I have
- 32:12more renewal or ownership or whatever it is in those areas of life?
- 32:15And you'll come up with answers to that.
- 32:17That's right.
- 32:18Got it.
- 32:19All right.
- 32:20Now, you guys I've seen have also since, you know, the, the, the genesis of one word, if
- 32:25you will, right, can one word, the one word that will change your life.
- 32:29You've now expanded into life word, right, discover your one word to leave a legacy.
- 32:34Do you want to share how that came about and any key differences there?
- 32:39Oh, yeah.
- 32:40It, this is, this is brand new came out in December.
- 32:44And we are excited about the momentum is, it's getting the difference between one word
- 32:48that will change your life and life word, discovering your one word to leave a legacy
- 32:54is, is this one word that will change your life is all about life change.
- 32:59It's about refining you and making into your, your very best is preparing you for the,
- 33:05the things that you're called to do.
- 33:08And it's all about life change.
- 33:10Life word is really about legacy.
- 33:13It's about beginning with the end in mind.
- 33:15It's about focusing on your purpose, your big purpose, your, your, your life's work,
- 33:21if you will, so that you can kind of keep that plumb line.
- 33:24You know, stay focused on the purpose of your life so that you can live on purpose, live
- 33:29with purpose.
- 33:31And in the end, make a positive difference for others.
- 33:34Got it.
- 33:35And that just came out in December, huh?
- 33:37It did.
- 33:38You know, one word is kind of like the chapters of your story.
- 33:41And, and life word is, is that title.
- 33:43You know, I was, just the other week, it's funny.
- 33:46I was on my, I was on my phone and I was walking from one location to another in an area
- 33:50I was unfamiliar with.
- 33:52I was going to pick up my car actually, we're doing some work on it.
- 33:55And I'm, I'm walking and I'm looking at my phone as I'm walking and I look up and all
- 33:59of a sudden I discover I'm, I'm actually in the middle of a graveyard and I'm thinking
- 34:04this is not really where I thought I'd end up, but I looked around this graveyard and
- 34:10I looked around at all the, all the tombstones there and I said, man, this fits with this
- 34:14whole life word concept is you've got one life.
- 34:19You will make a difference in some way, shape, or form.
- 34:22And the question is, will you be intentional about the way you live?
- 34:27So as to lead the greatest positive mark that you can in this life.
- 34:33And that's where life word comes in.
- 34:35Creating that one word focus on the big picture for the mark that you're going to, you
- 34:39leave behind.
- 34:40Oh, that's cool.
- 34:42Before we direct people to your website and all those resources there, any quick success
- 34:47stories.
- 34:48Some on your website, but any that like come to mind in terms of, you know, this one
- 34:52company or individual, like you worked with that you saw, right, noticeable difference
- 34:56for them.
- 34:57Yeah, I think, you know, a high profile one that's current is Davos Sweeney of Clemson
- 35:03University's head coach.
- 35:04Oh, well.
- 35:05How timely is that?
- 35:06There you go.
- 35:07Come on.
- 35:08Davos, we love you, buddy.
- 35:09And Davos is one of those guys that is a passionate dude and John Gordon in particular
- 35:15our co-author has worked with them for years and years and has really helped Davos to transform
- 35:21the culture of that locker room and his word for the year this year was love.
- 35:27And he said that the team that loves most is going to win.
- 35:32The team that loves most in the locker room, the group of guys that are most committed,
- 35:37that love each other, that believe the best in each other, that won't give up on each
- 35:40other is going to be the one who on the field of play is going to play at the highest
- 35:45level.
- 35:46And it's been his word for the year, it's provided that focus, that driving focus throughout
- 35:50the year.
- 35:51And of course, they, you know, they had the good fortune this year to win the national
- 35:53championship last year.
- 35:54They fell a little short, but I think that that driving force has really created a culture
- 36:00of teamwork, belief, and unity in the locker room that shows up on the field.
- 36:05Yeah.
- 36:07I'm sure can change everything and I'm sure you've seen that when you work with companies
- 36:11when that's such a great, I mean, you think about that with football.
- 36:13I mean, who would have thought about that, right?
- 36:14The team that loves the most wins doesn't sound usual for football locker rooms.
- 36:19Yeah.
- 36:20Not very masculine, right?
- 36:21No.
- 36:22Oh my gosh.
- 36:23That's incredible.
- 36:24But pretty powerful.
- 36:25Yeah.
- 36:26That's great.
- 36:27All right.
- 36:28So there's tons of resources on the website.
- 36:29I know I've gone through some of them.
- 36:30I've got the book and I'm diving into that.
- 36:31So I'm kind of walking through kind of a self study with this right now, but I'm going
- 36:35to be identifying my accountability partner.
- 36:36So anybody who's listening to this and wants to be my accountability partner, you let
- 36:39me know.
- 36:42But in terms of resources, you've got like discussion guides and a review and you can
- 36:46actually create your own poster and print it out.
- 36:48Where would you like to direct people to?
- 36:50Yeah.
- 36:51The easiest way to get that is that our website, which is get1word.com.
- 36:55And once people buy the book, go through it, go through the process and discover their
- 36:59word.
- 37:00We'd love to hear about it.
- 37:01And you can tweet us at get1word as well.
- 37:05And if you have pictures of the word of the way you're keeping it front center, man, post
- 37:10it and we'll be excited to see your journey.
- 37:12Oh, that's awesome.
- 37:13And you even have a one word promise on there, which is I think it's kind of a great accountability
- 37:18thing that you may want to put up somewhere, because it really just helps you reconnect
- 37:22to your promise to live out your one word.
- 37:25Yeah.
- 37:26We use that as an instrumental way to keep it front and center and to remind themselves
- 37:31of their focus on this word for the year.
- 37:33Yeah.
- 37:34That's great.
- 37:35This is going to be an experiment for me.
- 37:36And I wouldn't mind if perhaps you're open to it maybe, you know, six months from now,
- 37:41we do it.
- 37:42We could do a checkup and maybe bring it back on and probably have some feedback from the
- 37:44audience by then.
- 37:45But, you know, maybe we can revisit that and, you know, you'll get some updates, a progress
- 37:50report from me, if you will.
- 37:52You got it, man.
- 37:53I'm in.
- 37:54It's a long way.
- 37:55You know, we need to connect every month just so I keep you on track.
- 37:57Let's do that as well.
- 37:58Yeah.
- 37:59You guys have a great newsletter there as well.
- 38:01You have a one word action plan, get one word.com, definitely check it out.
- 38:05Anything coming up this year in 2017 that you just feels relevant to mention?
- 38:09I'll tell you this, the momentum from this has been tremendous and we're seeing it with
- 38:13teams, with businesses, with organizations.
- 38:16We're actually in the process of considering doing some kind of a of a conference on this
- 38:21because of the impact.
- 38:23And so we'll keep you posted on that.
- 38:25Yeah.
- 38:26I think that'd be a great idea.
- 38:27Definitely a conference, right?
- 38:28Some regional points around the country, but one word, man, you know, it's funny, when
- 38:32I did the intro for this podcast, I asked that question, can one word change your life,
- 38:37right?
- 38:38Kind of a cliffhanger.
- 38:39And so hopefully, by listening here today, you believe that it can, especially if you
- 38:44right, take ownership of that word, follow through on your promise to live that word and
- 38:48live that out on a daily basis.
- 38:50And by the way, as I'm sure you know, and I know you're a believer of this, Jimmy, is,
- 38:54hey, you're not perfect.
- 38:55So you're going to make mistakes and you're going to fall short, but that's okay.
- 38:59Get back up and get focused on that one word, right?
- 39:01That's right.
- 39:02Yep.
- 39:03Nobody's perfect.
- 39:04This is a journey.
- 39:05It's a process.
- 39:06Don't focus on the outcome, but focus on the process along the way.
- 39:09And we guarantee that you will make progress.
- 39:12Awesome.
- 39:13Well, thank you so much for being here.
- 39:14I've learned a lot.
- 39:15I've got some personal growth already just from this session today.
- 39:18And I know it'll come even more by following through on my one word promise.
- 39:22So for those of you listening, if you do want to, you know, have an accountability partner,
- 39:26maybe we'll put a small group together or something.
- 39:28Let me know.
- 39:29You can always email me info at mortgagemarketinginstitute.com.
