- 1:23Speaker 2: year party to celebrate you our incredible community and that
- 1:27Speaker 2: means we are shaking it up. We are doing things
- 1:29Speaker 2: a little bit differently. I'm sorry Beck in advance, but
- 1:32Speaker 2: we are skipping the broke tips and going all in
- 1:36Speaker 2: on the celebration vibes with your biggest money wins of
- 1:38Speaker 2: the year, and we're going to be helping to answer
- 1:40Speaker 2: money dilemma. That's all about which is the better option
- 1:44Speaker 2: building a home or buying one? And something new slid
- 1:47Speaker 2: into our dms about should you get a credit card
- 1:49Speaker 2: to get you through the rest of summer? And of
- 1:51Speaker 2: course we've got our favorite end of year tradition, which
- 1:55Speaker 2: is maybe everybody else's our bluepur real.
- 2:00Speaker 3: I saw that, my.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Friends, How was your Christmas? How did you celebrate? Oh?
- 2:05Speaker 3: It was really really fun.
- 2:06Speaker 4: I just went to my mom's house as per my
- 2:08Speaker 4: mom and my three brothers and we just play games.
- 2:11Speaker 4: We tried Trivial Pursuit, which is probably the hardest game
- 2:15Speaker 4: in the world.
- 2:15Speaker 3: I was such a nerdy kid. I loved kids Trivial Pursuit.
- 2:19Speaker 2: That's the same same when we play it with my
- 2:20Speaker 2: nieces and nephews now and like I still love it.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, you want to play that? That's crazy?
- 2:26Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 2:27Speaker 2: Kick your money, You're gone down. Do they play the
- 2:31Speaker 2: kids one or the red We play the kids one still,
- 2:33Speaker 2: but we have the adults one. And another game I've
- 2:35Speaker 2: been loving recently is called articulate.
- 2:38Speaker 6: I articulate, I articulate.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Yeah, but yeah with I don't think I've ever gotten
- 2:43Speaker 4: a trivial pursuit question right, really just to go back
- 2:46Speaker 4: to trivial pursuit, but articulate amazing Taboo?
- 2:49Speaker 3: Is it the one?
- 2:50Speaker 2: I love?
- 2:50Speaker 3: Taboo? Yes? So we just kind of do that. It
- 2:53Speaker 3: was it was really nice. It was a nice, wholesome time.
- 2:55Speaker 3: What about you, guys?
- 2:56Speaker 2: I love it.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I love it.
- 2:57Speaker 5: Min is good, lots of food, friends and family. The
- 3:00Speaker 5: three f's just yeah, it's I love this time of Yeah,
- 3:04Speaker 5: it's so nice. Added by Joy. I knew we've had
- 3:07Speaker 5: some good weather which has been really lovely and just
- 3:10Speaker 5: you're like soaking it all in.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that. When you said the three f's,
- 3:13Speaker 2: I was like, oh, like, my three f's the food, fuel,
- 3:15Speaker 2: and fun. And then I was like, oh no, actually,
- 3:18Speaker 2: people are much cooler than I am.
- 3:20Speaker 3: That's what I think when you say the three f's
- 3:22Speaker 3: to make it festive.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Funnily enough, you started on board games, and that's what
- 3:26Speaker 2: I got for Christmas. I asked for this board game
- 3:28Speaker 2: set because I was like, oh, like, we actually just
- 3:31Speaker 2: don't have these things. Whenever friends come over, like they
- 3:34Speaker 2: might bring one. We've got like a random assortment of games.
- 3:36Speaker 2: But I wanted the classics, and I found on Amazon
- 3:39Speaker 2: that they had these like classics, but they were like
- 3:42Speaker 2: in like colored boxes that look like books.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Oh I've seen those on TikTok.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Yeah, so I got them for Christmas, and I'm so excited.
- 3:50Speaker 2: My house twenty twenty six board game house, gorgeous. Come over,
- 3:53Speaker 2: We're playing board games. Yes, the best house to be Yeah,
- 3:56Speaker 2: I just think that's really fun. So I was really
- 3:58Speaker 2: excited about that. And then obviously just like lots of food,
- 4:00Speaker 2: lots of family, like just hanging out like our Christmas
- 4:04Speaker 2: is a very chill. Yeah, we hosted so we didn't
- 4:06Speaker 2: have to go anywhere, and I love that.
- 4:08Speaker 3: For me, that's so exciting.
- 4:09Speaker 4: I do.
- 4:10Speaker 2: All right, Well, let's move on, because this is the
- 4:13Speaker 2: part of the show where I would normally share a
- 4:15Speaker 2: five star review, but because it's the end of the year,
- 4:18Speaker 2: I wanted. I guess she's on the money, rapped and
- 4:22Speaker 2: I've pulled together some stats for you guys, So move
- 4:24Speaker 2: over Spotify, We've got this. She's on the Money rapped.
- 4:28Speaker 6: Oh I love that cool.
- 4:29Speaker 2: So first I feel like this is me blowing our
- 4:32Speaker 2: own trumpet and like, really loud, are you ready? Because
- 4:36Speaker 2: of all of you, our community, I love you. She's
- 4:40Speaker 2: on the Money was the number one Australian business and
- 4:42Speaker 2: finance podcast again this year.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Oh oh yeah, isn't that crazy? We're just girls. Wow,
- 4:48Speaker 3: we just got a mind.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Blowing you guys downloaded our podcast sit Down six million,
- 4:53Speaker 2: one hundred and eighty four thousand, one hundred and fifty
- 4:56Speaker 2: eight times.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Oh my god, I can't even comprehend that. That's insane.
- 5:00Speaker 2: No, and get this, you guys listened to seventy five million,
- 5:05Speaker 2: five hundred and forty three thousand, two hundred and forty
- 5:09Speaker 2: minutes of She's on the Money in the last twelve months.
- 5:13Speaker 3: That's I don't have the words.
- 5:16Speaker 2: How is that seventy five and a half million.
- 5:19Speaker 3: That's crazy? Go wow, oh my god, that's literally that's incredible.
- 5:23Speaker 3: I wont how many times they heard the word slay.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the seventy million.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Yeah yeah.
- 5:31Speaker 2: And also just the idea that that many people have
- 5:33Speaker 2: had us in their ears for that long wild which
- 5:37Speaker 2: I've done the maths equates to fifty two thousand, four
- 5:41Speaker 2: hundred and sixty one days of putting future you first.
- 5:45Speaker 6: Whoh oh, my god, Dad.
- 5:50Speaker 2: And now I've got a guessing game for you because
- 5:51Speaker 2: I've done the stats again. Ye, guys, how many years
- 5:54Speaker 2: does that equate to?
- 5:56Speaker 3: I was just thinking my brain, I wonder how many
- 5:57Speaker 3: years that is? Wait, what was the numbering?
- 5:59Speaker 2: Okay, so it was fifty two, four hundred and sixty
- 6:02Speaker 2: one days of putting future you first, three hundred and
- 6:06Speaker 2: sixty five days in a year, except every four years.
- 6:10Speaker 2: I'm going to sleeky take that into consideration.
- 6:13Speaker 6: You actually.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Ten oh wait ten ten?
- 6:18Speaker 6: It's so dumb, girl.
- 6:20Speaker 2: What No, that's why you're on as like content and
- 6:23Speaker 2: I'm on as math's girl.
- 6:24Speaker 3: I say, like one hundred and sixty Oh, she's good.
- 6:30Speaker 4: I'm going to say one hundred and seventy six.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Okay, it's one hundred and forty three seven years, So
- 6:37Speaker 2: like you, you're pretty close. Like those are pretty good guesses. Wow,
- 6:42Speaker 2: very impressed over a century of us.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Oh my god, I'm.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Lucky, unlucky for the people who have consumed that much.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I mean, you're probably in a better financial position, which
- 6:51Speaker 2: is exactly what we wanted. That's it, and sorry Spotify
- 6:54Speaker 2: for taking your wrapped But I will give you a
- 6:56Speaker 2: little bit of a shout out because Spotify also gave
- 6:58Speaker 2: us some awards In twenty five. We won the Marathon
- 7:05Speaker 2: Show Award, which means our fans listen to us ninety
- 7:09Speaker 2: nine percent more than other shows. Whoa guys like we
- 7:14Speaker 2: got a most talked About show, which means we get
- 7:17Speaker 2: ninety nine percent more comments than other shows.
- 7:20Speaker 3: And I love reading those. I read them every week.
- 7:23Speaker 2: It's like it's like we're in our dms, but getting
- 7:26Speaker 2: our dms like scar.
- 7:27Speaker 3: They want to Yeah, they're all fun and nice.
- 7:29Speaker 2: They're fun and nice, and when people aren't nice, I'm.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Like, well, why are you here?
- 7:33Speaker 6: Like, yeah, that's fair.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I will give you a refund on everything you've paid
- 7:36Speaker 2: to listen to this podcast, totally off you trot.
- 7:39Speaker 3: And then get this.
- 7:41Speaker 2: We won an award for being one of the most
- 7:44Speaker 2: shared shows, so we were shared ninety nine percent more
- 7:49Speaker 2: than other shows.
- 7:51Speaker 5: That makes my heart really happy because it makes me
- 7:53Speaker 5: think that you guys are listening and going, Wow, I
- 7:55Speaker 5: think this episode would really help somebody that I know.
- 7:57Speaker 3: And yeah, that's.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Incredible and we're so lucky because those are stats that
- 8:02Speaker 2: we can't get ourselves obviously, Like that's internal stuff from Spotify.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Like we can't compare ourselves to other podcasts because we
- 8:09Speaker 2: don't get access to their data and analytics. So it's
- 8:11Speaker 2: really special to like get that insight because I can
- 8:14Speaker 2: get the data of how many downloads we get, But like,
- 8:17Speaker 2: where does that put us on the grand scale of things?
- 8:20Speaker 2: Like wild to think that you guys Binge listen to
- 8:23Speaker 2: us so often, and I just think that.
- 8:25Speaker 3: I just am so lucky.
- 8:26Speaker 6: That is so cool.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Also, I've got some more Spotified rapped stuff because as
- 8:32Speaker 2: a podcaster, I get this cool log in to Spotify
- 8:35Speaker 2: that gives me my own podcasts rapped.
- 8:38Speaker 3: We love a little bit of data. You're ready.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Absolutely, I don't think you're going to be surprised here.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I'll give you one guess which music artist did our
- 8:44Speaker 2: community listen to the.
- 8:45Speaker 6: Most ten Swift?
- 8:46Speaker 2: Surely yeah it was Taylor Swift. And this is not
- 8:51Speaker 2: going to come as a surprise. But I also think
- 8:54Speaker 2: that if you go, oh, well, if they're listening to
- 8:55Speaker 2: she's on the money they're listening to. She's on the
- 8:57Speaker 2: money books. That is not true. The answer is not me.
- 9:00Speaker 2: But what was our community's most listened to audio.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Books Elizabeth Gilbert Love Eat Eat Pray, Eat Preyer Eat
- 9:08Speaker 4: Pray Love.
- 9:09Speaker 3: It wasn't Can I say akata. I'm just manifesting that
- 9:12Speaker 3: it's my girlies.
- 9:13Speaker 2: No, it's not like that's probably up there, but like,
- 9:16Speaker 2: these are my girlies, the self help girlies. Do you
- 9:18Speaker 2: want another guess because it's like it's a self help
- 9:21Speaker 2: ish book.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Oh, easy, easy way with Ellen Carr.
- 9:25Speaker 6: What is that Let's stop vaping book?
- 9:28Speaker 2: Oh, the stop vaping book. Understand it's not on the list,
- 9:32Speaker 2: but that's a good recommendation.
- 9:34Speaker 3: Thought going to give you a bathfoot investor, But I
- 9:36Speaker 3: don't want to say that.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I mean, you don't have to say barefoot investor because
- 9:39Speaker 2: it's let them. So it's the let them theory by
- 9:42Speaker 2: mel Robins stands.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Actually yep.
- 9:45Speaker 2: And also just to throw it out there, guys, she
- 9:47Speaker 2: is coming to tour Australia next year. She is and
- 9:52Speaker 2: my producer Emma and I, or our producer Emma and
- 9:54Speaker 2: I have been crafting little pri emails to get her
- 9:58Speaker 2: on the show. Because I just think, what an epic
- 10:00Speaker 2: opportunity to have her sit down to let them theory
- 10:04Speaker 2: and money. Oh, it would be so juicy, and I
- 10:07Speaker 2: feel like this is just a really good time for
- 10:08Speaker 2: me to be like, if you have a connection, if
- 10:10Speaker 2: you want to slide into her DMS, if you want
- 10:12Speaker 2: to hear her on She's on the Money, you could
- 10:14Speaker 2: just let her know.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you could just let her know.
- 10:17Speaker 2: So if you would want to hear mel Robbins on
- 10:19Speaker 2: the show while she is here in twenty twenty six, I.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Don't know, help a girl out.
- 10:25Speaker 2: I just feel like that would be good content.
- 10:27Speaker 3: I couldn't agree more. And I'd love to meet her.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Oh my god, yes, sex this is very self indulgent
- 10:32Speaker 2: at the same time as in my head being really
- 10:34Speaker 2: good content. Anyway, moving on, what do you think how
- 10:38Speaker 2: most popular episodes were?
- 10:39Speaker 3: Great?
- 10:40Speaker 6: I'm thinking like investing for Kids.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Yeah, really, well, not for kids, but investing for beginners.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Oh yes, so number one episode was investing for Beginners,
- 10:49Speaker 2: stop dreaming and start doing. In twenty twenty five, Gray
- 10:52Speaker 2: or Sick, Yeah, great, number two Number two Rich Girl
- 10:56Speaker 2: mindset of how to get it?
- 10:58Speaker 3: Yeah, we all want to be rich.
- 11:00Speaker 2: And then number three.
- 11:02Speaker 3: I want to say the first episode maybe not for
- 11:05Speaker 3: the most out, but it wasn't people listen every year.
- 11:08Speaker 2: It wasn't.
- 11:09Speaker 6: Was it any drink, No, it wasn't.
- 11:11Speaker 2: This is going to stroke a team member's ego though,
- 11:14Speaker 2: Oh it's not us. Yeah, books investing diary. Yeah, so
- 11:19Speaker 2: Brooks investing Diary. How this she's on the money team member,
- 11:22Speaker 2: built her portfolio and can retire by the age of
- 11:24Speaker 2: thirty five.
- 11:25Speaker 3: It was a goody. It was a goodie.
- 11:27Speaker 2: And then I feel like the video clips went really
- 11:29Speaker 2: viral and like it is quite crazy to think that
- 11:32Speaker 2: someone so young is building a portfolio to be able
- 11:35Speaker 2: to retire it thirty five. You go, how does that work?
- 11:37Speaker 2: And she's like, we'll sit down, I'll show you exactly
- 11:39Speaker 2: what I'm doing.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Yeah, totally.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Yeah. It just got so many good reviews, good content.
- 11:45Speaker 2: So yeah, we'll do more of that in twenty twenty six.
- 11:48Speaker 2: We do blogs every week. I know that not everybody
- 11:51Speaker 2: knows that we post blogs, but I love writing. I
- 11:54Speaker 2: don't know if you guys know. I have a whole
- 11:56Speaker 2: column in The Age and City Morning Herald, and they
- 11:58Speaker 2: let me rant every week. They give me a thousand
- 12:00Speaker 2: words to just spend and I can tell people my
- 12:04Speaker 2: thoughts and feelings. I see that we also do that internally.
- 12:07Speaker 2: So we have a blog, our most popular blog posts
- 12:10Speaker 2: on our website, and I actually have carved out the
- 12:13Speaker 2: Christmas Gift Guide because that was obviously the most of course,
- 12:18Speaker 2: because I feel like everyone's like, oh my goodness, I
- 12:20Speaker 2: need this. But our most popular blogs coming in at
- 12:24Speaker 2: number one three mortgage hacks that could save you thousands
- 12:27Speaker 2: without you giving up your daily oat latte. I felt
- 12:30Speaker 2: that was a very important.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Very brand us yep.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Number two was asking for a friend. How much does
- 12:36Speaker 2: everyone really have in super Friends the fun? Yeah, but
- 12:40Speaker 2: we also use our community data, so we always dive
- 12:43Speaker 2: into well, this is how much our community has. And
- 12:46Speaker 2: number three was the best high interest savings accounts in
- 12:49Speaker 2: Australia right now. Yes, with all of the hoops, explained
- 12:53Speaker 2: that that was.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Just no Jess's read it.
- 12:57Speaker 2: We greing back and forth like that blog was like
- 13:00Speaker 2: I would say, a team effort, because not only did
- 13:02Speaker 2: we have to like write a blog, but we had
- 13:04Speaker 2: to do the research. We had to do this whole
- 13:06Speaker 2: damn spreadsheet. I just I was like, I'm not having
- 13:09Speaker 2: people coming back to me and go Victoria, Are they
- 13:12Speaker 2: just like the best high interest savings accounts you can
- 13:14Speaker 2: find on Google?
- 13:15Speaker 7: No?
- 13:15Speaker 4: No, like asked Jess, the spreadsheet was extensive. I'm just
- 13:21Speaker 4: more impressive. You guys, remember, because you do them all
- 13:24Speaker 4: the time.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I would be like, I think it was trauma.
- 13:26Speaker 5: Certain things just stick in your mind. You associate with
- 13:29Speaker 5: them with something. I'm glad that that one did well.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Not like none of those were sponsored. They were blogs
- 13:35Speaker 2: that we were like, let's do the best high interest
- 13:37Speaker 2: savings accounts in Australia right now. And it was really
- 13:40Speaker 2: fun because we'd come up with like new banks or
- 13:42Speaker 2: like find other things. And then unfortunately I make the
- 13:44Speaker 2: team read the pds. I'm like, you can't just like
- 13:47Speaker 2: look at their website marketing. That's where the trauma I
- 13:50Speaker 2: think comes for Jess and George and Brook consider. Anyway,
- 13:55Speaker 2: I'm going to make sure that all of those are
- 13:56Speaker 2: linked in the show notes for you. So if you
- 13:58Speaker 2: missed them, and you'll but they were the top ones,
- 14:01Speaker 2: you're not going to chase them for very long. Now,
- 14:03Speaker 2: let's move into the money wins of the year and
- 14:06Speaker 2: the things our community are most proud of. So we
- 14:09Speaker 2: asked our community what their biggest money wins of twenty
- 14:12Speaker 2: twenty five were and what they were most proud of,
- 14:15Speaker 2: But before we share them, I wanted to ask the
- 14:17Speaker 2: same thing for our question of the week, so I'm
- 14:20Speaker 2: not giving that to the community. What are you most
- 14:22Speaker 2: proud of in twenty twenty five, Jessica Rici.
- 14:25Speaker 3: I don't think anyone's going to be surprised at all.
- 14:27Speaker 3: I'm proud that I'm building a house.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Yeah, ex she earns it woo. You know, it's a
- 14:34Speaker 2: feeling that wasn't meant to be condescending, I promised, but
- 14:36Speaker 2: like that is so slay.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I could not be more thrilled to be in debt.
- 14:40Speaker 3: That's been a long time coming.
- 14:41Speaker 5: As everybody knows, it's been quite the journey, and I'm
- 14:45Speaker 5: just really happy that the process is going and I'm
- 14:47Speaker 5: so excited about the fact that I'm building what will
- 14:50Speaker 5: be your home.
- 14:51Speaker 2: That's crazy, that's so exciting, and I just love that.
- 14:54Speaker 2: I know you wanted to buy something pre established, but
- 14:57Speaker 2: now we're going through I say weep because I feel
- 14:59Speaker 2: like I get to join. We're going through the process
- 15:01Speaker 2: of like just picking out all of her like designs
- 15:04Speaker 2: and like the tiles in the bathroom and the kitchen,
- 15:07Speaker 2: and I'm just like, this is going to be the
- 15:08Speaker 2: most Jess house ever.
- 15:09Speaker 3: There's going to be lots of pink.
- 15:10Speaker 2: There's so much pink, so much peach, there's so much pink.
- 15:14Speaker 2: I'm just so excited about it.
- 15:16Speaker 3: I couldn't fear. I'm over the moon.
- 15:18Speaker 5: Honestly, anytime I think about it, I just like, right now,
- 15:20Speaker 5: if you get through there, I'm like beating I just yeah,
- 15:21Speaker 5: it's so exciting.
- 15:22Speaker 2: It's so so nice.
- 15:23Speaker 6: Yes, and so so cute.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Misspects sayed, what are you most proud of?
- 15:27Speaker 4: Honestly, I was going to say, there's no like moment
- 15:30Speaker 4: that sticks out for me, but I think that I
- 15:31Speaker 4: am genuinely proud of the fact that I do live
- 15:34Speaker 4: paycheck to paycheck, but somehow I've managed to keep my
- 15:37Speaker 4: share house alive. I've managed to do all the things
- 15:41Speaker 4: I need to do and staying happy and staying free.
- 15:44Speaker 4: So I am just really proud that I'm not rich,
- 15:46Speaker 4: but I'm really making it, and I'm I'm very happy
- 15:50Speaker 4: about that.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Maybe twenty twenty six will be the year that Beck
- 15:53Speaker 2: finally lets me do her cash flow system and then
- 15:56Speaker 2: implements it.
- 15:58Speaker 3: That's the hard part.
- 15:59Speaker 6: It's the hard part, that's the harbor.
- 16:01Speaker 2: You're an investor, You've been an investor for more than
- 16:03Speaker 2: twelve months now, and I just feel like that level
- 16:06Speaker 2: of security probably really helps as well. Absolutely, what are
- 16:09Speaker 2: you most proud of this? Yeh? I wish I could
- 16:11Speaker 2: be like, Oh, I had this big thing that I did.
- 16:13Speaker 2: I think it's just the community. I feel like our
- 16:16Speaker 2: community has come together more this year than ever before.
- 16:19Speaker 2: I feel like we are lifting each other up. And
- 16:23Speaker 2: it sounds so fluffy, but when I was thinking about it,
- 16:25Speaker 2: I was like, it's literally just that vibe of like
- 16:28Speaker 2: the community coming together. And I think because we've been
- 16:31Speaker 2: around for so long, I'm now seeing more stories come
- 16:35Speaker 2: out where they're really big, big wins. So like, I'll
- 16:39Speaker 2: get messages now every week of people not just going
- 16:42Speaker 2: thanks so much. You helped me with my budget and
- 16:44Speaker 2: cash flow, which you know in year one we definitely got.
- 16:47Speaker 2: But people are changing their entire lives or have changed
- 16:49Speaker 2: their lives, or they're graduating a unique course they didn't
- 16:52Speaker 2: think that they could have done without us hyping them up.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Or they've bought their first home and they started in
- 16:58Speaker 2: debt and it's taken five years, but they're still on
- 17:01Speaker 2: the journey with us, and it's just so special to
- 17:03Speaker 2: know that our community are so successful. Like that's really
- 17:07Speaker 2: really cool. I think from a like a personal perspective,
- 17:11Speaker 2: my husband and I bought our I don't know, our
- 17:14Speaker 2: forever home this year, which was like the biggest thing ever.
- 17:17Speaker 2: And I've you know, I don't want to talk about
- 17:19Speaker 2: it heaps and heaps because I know that we're in
- 17:22Speaker 2: a very privileged position, but I also just go, this
- 17:25Speaker 2: house to me was something that I could never have comprehended.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Like I did not think that that was ever going
- 17:31Speaker 2: to be our reality. And I have worked really hard,
- 17:33Speaker 2: and like I don't want to downplay it, like that's
- 17:35Speaker 2: where it came from. It came from hard work, It
- 17:37Speaker 2: came from you know, all of the tears, all of
- 17:39Speaker 2: the sacrifice, all of the everything. But like, what do
- 17:42Speaker 2: you mean I got to purchase my dream home, So
- 17:45Speaker 2: that for us is really cool and just the idea
- 17:48Speaker 2: that you know, this is the home that Harvey's going
- 17:50Speaker 2: to grow up in. I just go, what, like, this
- 17:53Speaker 2: is the home I'll bring other children home to?
- 17:55Speaker 3: What Like that's so cool?
- 17:57Speaker 2: That's just cool for me, and I think that stability
- 17:59Speaker 2: is something I've always wanted to achieve for my children.
- 18:03Speaker 2: So yeah, bit fluffy, but also like a guess community,
- 18:07Speaker 2: and I bought a cool house for everybody. I say,
- 18:11Speaker 2: oh god, absolutely, cheese. You have gone through and done
- 18:15Speaker 2: a fair bit of work to pull out what we
- 18:17Speaker 2: think are some pretty big annual money wins.
- 18:21Speaker 3: What have you got alrighty?
- 18:22Speaker 5: Firstly, I've got one from Georgia, who said she started
- 18:25Speaker 5: the yart with twenty five thousand dollars down from forty
- 18:28Speaker 5: nine left to pay on her consumer debt. She's now
- 18:31Speaker 5: sixteen k in the green, including a five thousand dollar
- 18:35Speaker 5: emergency fund, and completely debt free.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Oh my gosh. She said her credit score is the
- 18:40Speaker 3: best it's been in five years.
- 18:41Speaker 6: Amazing.
- 18:42Speaker 3: How incredible is that?
- 18:43Speaker 2: That's so much money? That's so much my sorry sorry sorry,
- 18:47Speaker 2: So she started that she's doing more than one thousand
- 18:50Speaker 2: dollars a month to smash that out yep, and build
- 18:53Speaker 2: her Now that's more than two and a half grand
- 18:55Speaker 2: a month.
- 18:55Speaker 3: Yeah, wild Georgia.
- 18:58Speaker 5: Next, Rihanna said her biggest money win of twenty twenty
- 19:01Speaker 5: five was getting a promotion at work through self advocacy,
- 19:03Speaker 5: building her personal brand, networking with colleagues, and putting herself
- 19:07Speaker 5: in situations outside of her comfort zone. She said she
- 19:10Speaker 5: knows that she will continue to capitalize on these skills
- 19:12Speaker 5: into the future as well.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Good on you.
- 19:15Speaker 5: Then I've got one from Zoe Marie, who said she
- 19:17Speaker 5: refinanced her home loan at the twelve month mark to
- 19:20Speaker 5: her everyday bank so she could maximize the offsets, paired
- 19:23Speaker 5: with a few interest cuts that we've obviously had, and
- 19:25Speaker 5: now she's technically paying over one thousand dollars less per month,
- 19:29Speaker 5: but they're still paying additional funds to try and bring.
- 19:32Speaker 3: The term of the loan down. Gotcha.
- 19:34Speaker 6: I love that.
- 19:35Speaker 5: So that's great, very clever queen, paying the same amount,
- 19:38Speaker 5: paying it down faster. Much incredible work. Next, Sarah said
- 19:42Speaker 5: her biggest money win was double checking her income tax
- 19:44Speaker 5: and super by doing her due diligence and reading up
- 19:47Speaker 5: on policies and pay scales, plus a few confident discussions,
- 19:50Speaker 5: meant she received thousands in what she was owed and
- 19:53Speaker 5: that had been mistakenly missed on payroll and may have never.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Been picked up on.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Oh my god, wow, that's so good.
- 19:58Speaker 5: Always cross checked, totally that's the dream, genuinely. Next, Katrina
- 20:03Speaker 5: said that she has paid off her mortgage in twenty twenty.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Sorry the whole mortgage.
- 20:07Speaker 3: The whole mortgage cool.
- 20:09Speaker 5: She says, we changed the way we divided our money
- 20:11Speaker 5: into our accounts and it has changed our life. I
- 20:13Speaker 5: learned that prioritizing paying off the mortgage is exhausting, So
- 20:17Speaker 5: make sure you.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Reward yourself occasionally. Yeah, it would be you think is
- 20:20Speaker 3: a really great tip.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Totally.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Next, Sarah said using little ty cards throughout the year
- 20:24Speaker 5: and saving them up for hard times. She's been living
- 20:26Speaker 5: on them for a month and it's been hard as
- 20:28Speaker 5: she's moving into a new house, and it's meant she
- 20:31Speaker 5: can save where she can adore pass you set up
- 20:34Speaker 5: future you incredible work. And then lastly, I'm going to
- 20:36Speaker 5: do one this year from Talia, who said she graduated
- 20:39Speaker 5: university set herself a long term money goal because she
- 20:43Speaker 5: wants to have investments equal to her HEX balance before
- 20:45Speaker 5: she starts a family and has to take parental leave.
- 20:48Speaker 5: She said it took seven years, but with the twenty
- 20:51Speaker 5: percent cut applied and her most recent small chunk invested,
- 20:55Speaker 5: her portfolio balance is now greater than her HEX balance.
- 20:59Speaker 5: She said, what's more exciting than that my little one
- 21:01Speaker 5: is due in eight weeks? Spertulations, Tarlia, that's amazing.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Stop it.
- 21:07Speaker 2: I absolutely love that. Ah. I love our community so
- 21:11Speaker 2: much it makes me want to scream, Like I just
- 21:13Speaker 2: I'm so ridiculously proud of everyone in there. It doesn't
- 21:16Speaker 2: matter if you you know, we're just looking at cutting
- 21:18Speaker 2: down your after pay or you paid off your mortgage like,
- 21:20Speaker 2: I don't care. I'm equally excited about all of those.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Yes, you guys are incredible.
- 21:25Speaker 2: All right, let's go to a really quick break and
- 21:27Speaker 2: on the flip side, we are diving even deeper. We
- 21:29Speaker 2: are going to be talking about which is a better option.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Are we going to be building a home or are
- 21:33Speaker 2: we buying one? And something we slid into our dms
- 21:37Speaker 2: about should I be getting a credit card to be
- 21:39Speaker 2: getting through the rest of this summer?
- 21:41Speaker 1: Mm?
- 21:41Speaker 5: Spoiler, I wonder what Victoria thinks. Anyway, Let's go to
- 21:44Speaker 5: a break. Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to
- 21:50Speaker 5: this week's money dilemma.
- 21:54Speaker 7: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just

- 22:12Speaker 2: Now, let's take a listen to this week's money Dilemma.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Hello, SotM Squad, Happy Friday.
- 22:20Speaker 8: I'm in the middle of listening to twenty of the episodes, actually,
- 22:23Speaker 8: but I have a dilemma or a question, so to speak,
- 22:25Speaker 8: about building versus buying. This year, me and my partner
- 22:29Speaker 8: bought our first house, a townhouse, and we are well
- 22:33Speaker 8: and truly on the way of looking what the next
- 22:36Speaker 8: house looks like for our family home. And I work
- 22:39Speaker 8: at a bank in the construction lending sector, and right
- 22:41Speaker 8: now it's proving true that building is going to be
- 22:44Speaker 8: a lot cheaper than it is buying, and that might
- 22:47Speaker 8: change obviously in the next like one to five years.
- 22:50Speaker 8: But I'm curious to know what your thoughts are on
- 22:53Speaker 8: buying versus building. Thank you well.
- 22:57Speaker 5: I had this exact situation this year myself, so I
- 23:01Speaker 5: feel you tell me kind of qualified. I had a
- 23:04Speaker 5: very similar situation to our listener in that I was
- 23:06Speaker 5: just finding that everything that was established was so expensive
- 23:10Speaker 5: to the point where prices were being pushed up beyond
- 23:14Speaker 5: what I felt was reasonable for them, like you would
- 23:16Speaker 5: be overpaying in my opinion. Now I'm obviously going through
- 23:20Speaker 5: the building process. I'm still in very early days, but
- 23:24Speaker 5: I think it's been a fantastic decision for me. I
- 23:26Speaker 5: think the really fun thing, especially if you're someone who's particular,
- 23:30Speaker 5: is when you build, like all of that control sits
- 23:32Speaker 5: with you, so you get to pick, as Victoria was
- 23:34Speaker 5: saying earlier, like all of your tiles, your wall color,
- 23:37Speaker 5: like all these different fun things. And I think that
- 23:40Speaker 5: that is a really exciting thing to me, Like it's
- 23:42Speaker 5: something that I've really enjoyed. It has been a bit
- 23:44Speaker 5: of an arduous process, but it's been really fun. The
- 23:48Speaker 5: other thing is, and I guess because you guys already
- 23:51Speaker 5: have your property, it's probably not as applicable to use
- 23:54Speaker 5: it was to me.
- 23:55Speaker 3: But building a.
- 23:55Speaker 5: Home meant that I was able to take advantage of
- 23:58Speaker 5: a lot of grants and schemes that I wouldn't have
- 24:00Speaker 5: qualified for had I purchased established. So, like the first
- 24:04Speaker 5: home owners grant the stamp duty exemption because of the
- 24:08Speaker 5: cost of buying established homes, I would have capped out
- 24:11Speaker 5: on that, whereas if you're buying land and then building
- 24:15Speaker 5: a home on it, the assessment is done on the
- 24:17Speaker 5: value of the land at the time that you purchase it,
- 24:20Speaker 5: which is often like half ish of your total cost,
- 24:24Speaker 5: And so like that saved me. I believe, like thirty
- 24:27Speaker 5: plus thousand dollars is stamp duty. I'm with your Victoria
- 24:29Speaker 5: because she knows the numbers.
- 24:31Speaker 2: I'm yeah, I went through her numbers. Yep, everything she
- 24:35Speaker 2: has said so far. Yes, yeah, there were huge things
- 24:38Speaker 2: to me.
- 24:38Speaker 5: Obviously for you that might not be the case because
- 24:40Speaker 5: you've already bought a home. But I think I'm a
- 24:43Speaker 5: big fan of the process of building. Heaps of people
- 24:45Speaker 5: said to me over the years, Oh, I wouldn't build
- 24:48Speaker 5: your first home, and now that I'm doing it, I
- 24:50Speaker 5: don't really understand why they said that, Like maybe.
- 24:52Speaker 2: A building not to be rude. Yeah, it's like when
- 24:54Speaker 2: people are like, how hard could parenting be? True when
- 24:57Speaker 2: they're not parents, and I go, you sit down, you
- 25:00Speaker 2: just wait. People say things like, oh my god, I
- 25:02Speaker 2: would never let my kid. No, sorry, you can't say
- 25:05Speaker 2: you can't take a Yeah, like, don't get me wrong.
- 25:09Speaker 2: You might have a very smooth process and I'm manifesting
- 25:12Speaker 2: that very hard. But yeah, yeah, sorry to cut you off.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Tell me your thoughts.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Okay, So when it comes to building versus buying on paper,
- 25:23Speaker 2: building is going to look cheaper, that doesn't mean it is.
- 25:28Speaker 2: I think we need to look at the season and
- 25:29Speaker 2: of our lives. And you know, to flip this, we
- 25:32Speaker 2: didn't build, but my husband and I purchased our first
- 25:35Speaker 2: home with the intention of significantly renovating it, and we
- 25:38Speaker 2: did and we sold it and like it all came
- 25:41Speaker 2: out in the wash. When I say it all came
- 25:43Speaker 2: out in the wash, it was a chaotic process, like Jess,
- 25:46Speaker 2: you remember my chaos period. And I can't tell you
- 25:49Speaker 2: if that was all the builder's fault. Terrible builder, by
- 25:52Speaker 2: the way, sorry, not builder, terrible project manager. The builder
- 25:55Speaker 2: was delightful, terrible project manager. It wasn't me, by the way.
- 25:59Speaker 2: I didn't like if I had, it would have been
- 26:02Speaker 2: just as bad. Anyway. That process meant that we thought
- 26:06Speaker 2: we would have ended up walking away with a bigger
- 26:08Speaker 2: profit on the house when we sold it, and that's
- 26:09Speaker 2: just not the reality of the situation. Absolutely fine, because
- 26:12Speaker 2: that's not what you're checking in with my husband, and
- 26:15Speaker 2: I decided that building wasn't for us because it really
- 26:18Speaker 2: depends on where you're building what you're looking at, Like
- 26:21Speaker 2: Jess is building in an area that has a lot
- 26:23Speaker 2: of construction already, and you're.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Going to go in availability.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you're going to go with a house on land package.
- 26:29Speaker 2: So for me to build any area that I would
- 26:31Speaker 2: have wanted to build in, it would have meant there's
- 26:34Speaker 2: no empty blocks of land. It would have meant a
- 26:37Speaker 2: buy a house, demo a house, rebuild a house, which
- 26:40Speaker 2: is going to have a lot more costs associated with it,
- 26:42Speaker 2: not just because of demolition, but because it's out of
- 26:45Speaker 2: the area that most of the builders are working in.
- 26:48Speaker 2: So Jess is going to get more preferable rates because
- 26:50Speaker 2: they're also building three houses down the street that have
- 26:52Speaker 2: very similar fittings and fixtures and they can kind of
- 26:54Speaker 2: keep things on a similar timeframe. There's a lot to it.
- 26:58Speaker 2: It also depends if you've entered into a fixed rate
- 27:00Speaker 2: building contract versus a not fixed rate building contract. And
- 27:04Speaker 2: as we're probably I don't know if you guys are watching,
- 27:06Speaker 2: but like mining is getting more expensive, minerals are getting
- 27:10Speaker 2: more expensive, iron ore is getting more expensive, and for this,
- 27:14Speaker 2: it means that lots of people's budgets are being blown
- 27:16Speaker 2: because they're like, oh, well, you know, these these floorboards
- 27:20Speaker 2: were fifty dollars a square meter, they're now sixty dollars
- 27:23Speaker 2: a square meter, and you think ten bucks here and there,
- 27:25Speaker 2: what's the difference. But this stuff adds up. And then
- 27:28Speaker 2: it's also the delays. So Jess is in a perfect
- 27:32Speaker 2: position from my perspective. She's got a rental property that
- 27:35Speaker 2: she can live in. You could go month to month
- 27:37Speaker 2: if they kept pushing it out and make it work
- 27:40Speaker 2: for you. But there's a lot of people who will
- 27:42Speaker 2: build and then go home moving with mum and dad
- 27:45Speaker 2: for the six months they say it takes, then it
- 27:47Speaker 2: takes twelve, or they have to keep renting and paying
- 27:49Speaker 2: the mortgage on the land. Look, there's just a lot
- 27:52Speaker 2: to go through. So I don't think that there is
- 27:54Speaker 2: a right or a wrong. But I think it's about
- 27:56Speaker 2: deep diving because like, I wouldn't do it in my area,
- 28:00Speaker 2: but I did the numbers for Jests and I was like, yes,
- 28:01Speaker 2: dive in Like that sounds fantastic, Like you know, she'd
- 28:04Speaker 2: already done the research before she even bought the house
- 28:06Speaker 2: on the type of builder she'd use, how much the
- 28:08Speaker 2: type of house she would want to purchase would cost,
- 28:11Speaker 2: what the upgrades would look like, what upgrades she could afford,
- 28:14Speaker 2: versus not like just went deep. That's what I want
- 28:17Speaker 2: you to do if you're going to be doing that,
- 28:19Speaker 2: whereas I went deep on mine, and I was just like,
- 28:21Speaker 2: my goodness, Like this is crazy.
- 28:25Speaker 8: You know.
- 28:26Speaker 2: I don't want to scare people, but like I have
- 28:28Speaker 2: a neighbor down the road for me who did the
- 28:30Speaker 2: knockdown rebuild. Their house is going to be beautiful. They're
- 28:34Speaker 2: already fifty percent over budget.
- 28:35Speaker 3: That's crazy.
- 28:37Speaker 2: And like once you get there, what do you do?
- 28:39Speaker 2: Just stop building the house? Yeah, you see, So you
- 28:42Speaker 2: have to make sure that you know what you're up
- 28:45Speaker 2: against when it comes to building, Like, yes, you might
- 28:47Speaker 2: save on stamp duty, but like, what does the timeframe
- 28:51Speaker 2: look like? And I feel like yours is very predictable, Jess, Yeah,
- 28:55Speaker 2: because of the style of house, the location, et cetera.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Build her and stuff too.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Exactly exactly, Whereas if we had done it, we could
- 29:02Speaker 2: have gone through a volume builder. But because it's so
- 29:05Speaker 2: out of the way of every other house they're building,
- 29:07Speaker 2: we would be the ones that would be left lagging
- 29:09Speaker 2: while they prioritize getting a bulk lot done.
- 29:11Speaker 5: Yeah. The other thing I would say, sorry, you remind
- 29:14Speaker 5: me of something very good. I so about this in
- 29:15Speaker 5: a YouTube view. The costs that you look at for
- 29:17Speaker 5: houses online are so not even remotely close to the
- 29:20Speaker 5: final costion there.
- 29:21Speaker 2: It's crazy. They'll give you the budget version.
- 29:23Speaker 5: Yeah, and it's like you have to factor in upgrades,
- 29:25Speaker 5: site costs, which will vary depending on where your land is,
- 29:28Speaker 5: the cost putting appliances, driveway, your driving's.
- 29:31Speaker 3: Not included, fend, things not included. There are lots of
- 29:33Speaker 3: things like that.
- 29:34Speaker 5: That you need to factor in that will be on
- 29:36Speaker 5: top of whatever those listed prices are online.
- 29:39Speaker 2: So you go, great, that's the house, and they're like, yeah,
- 29:41Speaker 2: the shell of the house.
- 29:42Speaker 6: Huh, yeah, that's so mean.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Yeah it is.
- 29:45Speaker 2: But then there's just such variance between what you do.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Like Jess will go in right, so she's picked her
- 29:51Speaker 2: like shell of her house. And now we're going in
- 29:53Speaker 2: and we're looking at the kitchen. Do you want marble
- 29:55Speaker 2: bench tops? I do need it, yes, but like some
- 29:58Speaker 2: people would not want that out. Yeah, that's going to
- 30:00Speaker 2: cost you between ten and thirty thousand dollars yep, and
- 30:03Speaker 2: that's another cost to be added. Great, what types of
- 30:06Speaker 2: appliances are you putting in? Are you just putting in
- 30:08Speaker 2: the most basic or are you like, no, massive cook,
- 30:12Speaker 2: I want the fanciest European appliances. Well that's going to
- 30:16Speaker 2: change the price point again, and these changes around the
- 30:19Speaker 2: house are going to add up. Yeah, the type of
- 30:22Speaker 2: tile you pick one could be the most basic tile
- 30:26Speaker 2: dollar per tile money win.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Yep.
- 30:28Speaker 2: You could be like, oh, I really like these Italian
- 30:30Speaker 2: blue ones.
- 30:30Speaker 6: They work really well.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Great, that's actually seventeen dollars a tile, and that adds up.
- 30:35Speaker 2: So it's not that they're trying to screw you over,
- 30:39Speaker 2: but they can't give you an accurate representation of what
- 30:42Speaker 2: your dreamhouse is going to look like because they're not
- 30:45Speaker 2: trying to mess you around. They're like, the base costs this,
- 30:48Speaker 2: and then your kitchen could cost like we could probably
- 30:51Speaker 2: build one for ten grand money win. Or did you
- 30:53Speaker 2: want all of the luxury inclusions because that's a fifty
- 30:55Speaker 2: thousand dollar kitchen totally? Well that's one hundred thousand dollar kitch,
- 30:58Speaker 2: you know what I mean? So is that fair to
- 31:00Speaker 2: just give it a one price. I see, Yeah, yeah
- 31:04Speaker 2: that makes sense. What would you do build a bye?
- 31:08Speaker 1: God?
- 31:08Speaker 4: I just am so it's not my world, it's not
- 31:13Speaker 4: my wheelhouse. But I think that I wouldn't have the
- 31:15Speaker 4: patience to build. I feel like I would be so
- 31:19Speaker 4: excited to be purchasing that I would want it to
- 31:22Speaker 4: be already existing. But there is something really nice about
- 31:24Speaker 4: knowing that you're walking into a home that you've bought,
- 31:27Speaker 4: and you, other than the builders, are the.
- 31:30Speaker 6: Only ones to touch the service lived there. You're the
- 31:33Speaker 6: only one to live in that house. Ever. You know,
- 31:37Speaker 6: there would be something really special about that.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Do you care about that? Are you excited about that?
- 31:41Speaker 5: I mean yeah, like I guess it's something nice, like well,
- 31:44Speaker 5: no one had sex on my kitchen counter. Yeah, I
- 31:50Speaker 5: think there's something in it all being do you house
- 31:52Speaker 5: sit up?
- 31:53Speaker 2: Beck and I are interested.
- 31:57Speaker 3: It's because you want to.
- 31:59Speaker 2: We were just we're just interested in the opportunity.
- 32:03Speaker 3: Yeah, that sounds which was coming on to me, But
- 32:06Speaker 3: I'm open to it. That's so fine.
- 32:08Speaker 2: You know what I would if I could, but I can't.
- 32:09Speaker 6: So I'm so glad to eilat year I'm married.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Maybe it could have worked. It's a real shame. But
- 32:19Speaker 3: if you could keep your kitchen.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Counterclanus fantastic, that would be fantastic. I just didn't care
- 32:26Speaker 2: about that as someone who's always like lived in rentals
- 32:29Speaker 2: and bought secondhand cars like I.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Just that's a great point. Like all my couches.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got this brand new kitchen. No one has
- 32:38Speaker 2: had sex on my kitchen bench. The couch, though, I
- 32:41Speaker 2: don't know what those stains are.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Look, I'm in the market as a couch is okay?
- 32:46Speaker 2: Oh god, all right, let's move on. I feel like
- 32:48Speaker 2: that has probably wrapped that up. Would you like to
- 32:50Speaker 2: get into the DM.
- 32:52Speaker 3: That we got? Absolutely yes, please?
- 32:54Speaker 7: All right.
- 32:54Speaker 2: So I think this is a really timely one, which
- 32:56Speaker 2: is why I picked it. So someone slipped into my
- 32:58Speaker 2: DMS this week and said, Hi, she's on the I
- 33:00Speaker 2: have a dilemma that I'd love to get some opinions
- 33:02Speaker 2: on context. In term four, I took a nine week
- 33:05Speaker 2: opportunity as a teacher's aid in a town twenty hours
- 33:08Speaker 2: from where I'm from. As a temporary position, I won't
- 33:11Speaker 2: receive holiday pay over the next six weeks, but I
- 33:14Speaker 2: will have permanency there In twenty twenty six, however, I'm
- 33:18Speaker 2: concerned about finances over the six week holidays that are
- 33:21Speaker 2: coming up. I've left with five thousand dollars in my
- 33:24Speaker 2: bank account and four and a half thousand dollars in
- 33:26Speaker 2: my raised shares. At the moment, I don't have any debt,
- 33:28Speaker 2: just twenty seven hundred and sixty five dollars of total
- 33:32Speaker 2: rent to pay for the next six weeks before I
- 33:34Speaker 2: return to start my new job. I'll also have a
- 33:37Speaker 2: few big expenses over the holidays. The big question here
- 33:40Speaker 2: is should I apply for a personal loan or a
- 33:42Speaker 2: credit card to get me through this period or is
- 33:45Speaker 2: it wise to withdraw some of my money from shares?
- 33:48Speaker 8: Oh?
- 33:51Speaker 4: I mean, maybe it's because I am kind of savvy
- 33:57Speaker 4: with my money now, because I'm perpetually broke.
- 34:00Speaker 6: And sorry, you're.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Definitely getting better. I don't think you're broke.
- 34:04Speaker 3: I'm going to video you.
- 34:05Speaker 2: You're not allowed to call yourself broke when you have
- 34:06Speaker 2: a shared portfolio. Yeah true, actually legal, Yeah that's true.
- 34:10Speaker 6: That's a really good point. That's crazy.
- 34:11Speaker 2: But I'm taking your identity away from you. I'm so sorry.
- 34:14Speaker 3: That's so fun.
- 34:14Speaker 4: I think that I would just be picking up and
- 34:16Speaker 4: I know that it sounds like they're quite busy, but
- 34:18Speaker 4: I would be picking up.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Like odd jobs here and there.
- 34:21Speaker 6: It's a really tricky one.
- 34:23Speaker 4: I don't think you should go into debt because it
- 34:26Speaker 4: could get out of control really quickly, like a wildfire,
- 34:29Speaker 4: you know.
- 34:30Speaker 3: So don't risk it.
- 34:31Speaker 6: Don't risk it.
- 34:32Speaker 4: I'd be trying to find odd jobs here and there
- 34:35Speaker 4: before dipping into your shares.
- 34:39Speaker 3: I mean, six weeks is a long time to not
- 34:40Speaker 3: be working. I think that I'm with you.
- 34:43Speaker 5: I'm team like, pick up some extra work, if you
- 34:44Speaker 5: can do some doornatshit do whatever to me? You say, like,
- 34:48Speaker 5: what I have heard is rough a little bit over
- 34:51Speaker 5: half of your income or money that you have, half
- 34:54Speaker 5: of your five thousand dollars needs to go to rent.
- 34:56Speaker 5: In my mind, for myself, two thousand dollars to last
- 35:00Speaker 5: six weeks would be enough to cover food, et cetera.
- 35:04Speaker 5: I don't know about your bills and stuff, and I
- 35:05Speaker 5: don't know about those large expenses that you alluded to.
- 35:08Speaker 3: Yes, so if the combination of those things is going to.
- 35:10Speaker 5: Chew through all of that five thousand dollars, I would
- 35:14Speaker 5: be saying that, yeah, you do need to look at
- 35:15Speaker 5: an alternative option to give yourself a bit of safety,
- 35:19Speaker 5: whether that is picking up our jobs. That would be
- 35:21Speaker 5: my personal preference for you and for myself too. Honestly,
- 35:24Speaker 5: if you had to get a credit card, and I'm
- 35:27Speaker 5: not against credit cards, I have one for the points
- 35:29Speaker 5: I think, I would just say, be smart about it,
- 35:32Speaker 5: so I would save signing up for the credit card
- 35:36Speaker 5: until the last possible minute, so that you can align
- 35:40Speaker 5: your repayment with when your first payment from you when
- 35:43Speaker 5: your job will because I assume at most your first
- 35:46Speaker 5: payment would be every four weeks, but I believe for
- 35:50Speaker 5: teachers he today it's more often fortnightly. So if that's
- 35:53Speaker 5: the case, I would say, maybe like a week or
- 35:56Speaker 5: two before you go back to school, when you arguably
- 35:58Speaker 5: probably are quite skin get a credit card. Do not
- 36:02Speaker 5: spend more on that credit card. Then you will be
- 36:04Speaker 5: able to pay off with that first pay cycle, and
- 36:06Speaker 5: make sure that you do so so you're not paying
- 36:08Speaker 5: any interest.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Is it an ideal situation?
- 36:11Speaker 6: Obviously not.
- 36:12Speaker 5: It really comes down to are you responsible enough to
- 36:14Speaker 5: have a credit card? All those sorts of things exactly
- 36:17Speaker 5: We're saying, if you're going to spend and get into
- 36:18Speaker 5: like a bad cycle, wouldn't recommend Definitely my preference would
- 36:22Speaker 5: be just pick up the extra work to get you through,
- 36:24Speaker 5: because six weeks is a long time to not be working.
- 36:26Speaker 5: But if you absolutely had to, I don't want you
- 36:28Speaker 5: to not have any money available to you at all.
- 36:31Speaker 3: That's my thought totally.
- 36:33Speaker 2: I agree and don't agree. I would be like saving
- 36:35Speaker 2: the credit card as a last resort, like just because
- 36:39Speaker 2: I feel like that's a fantastic way of dealing with it. Jesse,
- 36:42Speaker 2: It genuinely is. But that's how so many people get
- 36:45Speaker 2: their first credit cards and then get themselves into deck
- 36:48Speaker 2: because they go, this will just get me through this period,
- 36:51Speaker 2: and then after this period, I'm just not going to
- 36:53Speaker 2: use it again. But then next month happens and you
- 36:55Speaker 2: really want to go to someone's birthday, or the month
- 36:58Speaker 2: after that happens and you're like, far out, I've got
- 37:00Speaker 2: unexpected rediro cost. I'll just chuck it on my credit
- 37:02Speaker 2: card and deal with it later. And that's how debt
- 37:04Speaker 2: starts to snowball, and you start to get more and
- 37:06Speaker 2: more comfortable using your card and you don't think about it,
- 37:09Speaker 2: Like nobody gets a credit card with the intention of
- 37:12Speaker 2: going into significant debt. I don't think I've ever met
- 37:14Speaker 2: someone who's been in significant credit card debt and I've said, well,
- 37:18Speaker 2: you know, why did you first get a credit card?
- 37:19Speaker 2: Talk me through that, and they go, well, V I
- 37:21Speaker 2: just had all this expensive luxury stuff I couldn't afforded,
- 37:25Speaker 2: and I just thought, yeah, I just thought i'd get
- 37:27Speaker 2: a credit card and I could have that stuff. It's
- 37:30Speaker 2: always a story like that, where oh, yeah, I had
- 37:33Speaker 2: these six weeks and that's the tipping point. So I
- 37:36Speaker 2: feel like it's a very slippery slope, which is why
- 37:38Speaker 2: I would avoid it at all costs. Not saying it's
- 37:41Speaker 2: the end of the world to do that, but I
- 37:43Speaker 2: just want a caveat there. For me, it would be
- 37:46Speaker 2: what you suggested as well. What could you do in
- 37:48Speaker 2: those six weeks? Could you jump on air tasker and
- 37:51Speaker 2: you know, do some proof reading for somebody to get
- 37:53Speaker 2: a few couple of like a couple of hundred bucks
- 37:55Speaker 2: in are their tasks that you could take up? Is
- 37:57Speaker 2: there a cafe you could go in work in.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Did you do tutoring?
- 38:01Speaker 2: Aud you do shootoring? Like I feel like lots of
- 38:03Speaker 2: cafes over the holiday periods always want some more hands
- 38:06Speaker 2: on deck. And if you went in and said, hey,
- 38:07Speaker 2: I'd love to work for you for the next six
- 38:09Speaker 2: months while you're dealing with additional holiday traffic. Like that's
- 38:14Speaker 2: a money win. That's probably a good tip for people
- 38:16Speaker 2: who are listening to this on boxing day and they're like, oh,
- 38:18Speaker 2: like I don't start unied till March or something. Yeah,
- 38:21Speaker 2: that's a busy period for most people in HOSPO. So yeah,
- 38:26Speaker 2: I would look at that. I would obviously firstly want
- 38:28Speaker 2: to look at like your budget. Is there anything you
- 38:30Speaker 2: can delay, Like is obviously we're paying our rent, but
- 38:34Speaker 2: are there any things coming up that you're like, Oh,
- 38:35Speaker 2: I actually don't have to spend that this month. They
- 38:37Speaker 2: could put it off until I have my full time
- 38:39Speaker 2: job again. But yeah, for me, I think it would
- 38:41Speaker 2: be about budget and cash flow. How can I bring
- 38:43Speaker 2: in some additional cash? Okay, maybe we could look at
- 38:46Speaker 2: our raise portfolio, because in all honesty, from a pragmatic
- 38:49Speaker 2: point of view, I'd prefer you to pull out a
- 38:51Speaker 2: couple of one hundred dollars that you need from your
- 38:53Speaker 2: share portfolio then get a credit card to cover that.
- 38:56Speaker 2: I don't know how long you've been investing in rays,
- 38:59Speaker 2: I don't know what that looks like. But if it's
- 39:00Speaker 2: either on par with the market or just above the market.
- 39:03Speaker 2: It's not the end of the world. And then you
- 39:04Speaker 2: could create a little plan once you get back to
- 39:07Speaker 2: work to replenish that amount. But yeah, that's probably where
- 39:10Speaker 2: my brain is at. I'm just so scared of you're
- 39:13Speaker 2: getting a credit card and then falling down the credit
- 39:15Speaker 2: card like slide.
- 39:17Speaker 3: Basically totally what everyone else say.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Everyone else always has an opinion, and I love it.
- 39:21Speaker 2: So the first thing I asked you guys was what
- 39:22Speaker 2: would you do if you were our community member. Forty
- 39:25Speaker 2: four percent said I would be trying to reduce my expenses.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Thirty four percent, you guys, we're all on the same page,
- 39:31Speaker 2: said I'm going to look at holiday income. Twelve percent
- 39:33Speaker 2: said they'd sale shares, and ten percent said look at
- 39:36Speaker 2: loan and credit options. So I feel like that's reflective
- 39:38Speaker 2: of the conversation we had. The next question we asked
- 39:42Speaker 2: was what's your biggest priority with money right now? Thirty
- 39:45Speaker 2: eight percent said working on your budget and cash flow.
- 39:49Speaker 2: My money master class is a great place to start.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Twenty six percent of you said growing investments. My investing
- 39:56Speaker 2: master class is a great first sister. Nineteen percent said
- 39:59Speaker 2: avoiding an eighteen percent said generating more income. Then I
- 40:04Speaker 2: asked you, guys, what's your two cents? So diving straight in,
- 40:07Speaker 2: first person said, will they even be eligible for a
- 40:09Speaker 2: loan or a credit card if they're not currently working?
- 40:11Speaker 2: That's a great point. Actually, oh true, Yes and no
- 40:14Speaker 2: if you've got a signed employment contract. Usually yes as
- 40:17Speaker 2: a low bar. Yeah, not saying that is a good thing,
- 40:21Speaker 2: but there is usually a very low bar. Next person,
- 40:23Speaker 2: it is a two parter. I would make up a
- 40:25Speaker 2: budget and try my best to stick to it. Also
- 40:27Speaker 2: try and get some extra cash flow in, maybe with
- 40:30Speaker 2: tutoring or other casual jobs. Just keeping everything in the black.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:34Speaker 2: Next person said, can a family member learn new money
- 40:37Speaker 2: interest free and then you can pay it back when
- 40:38Speaker 2: you're working? I mean, not the worst. Like if you're
- 40:41Speaker 2: in a situation where your mum can give you five
- 40:43Speaker 2: hundred bucks and you pay you back and it's very
- 40:46Speaker 2: clean and easy. I don't think that's the worst thing
- 40:48Speaker 2: in the world. No, but not everybody is in a
- 40:50Speaker 2: position where they want to do that or can do that.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Next person said, Hubby and I use a credit card
- 40:55Speaker 2: responsibly to manage cash flow, and it works well for us.
- 40:58Speaker 2: I agree, so do we. So does Jess, Like it's
- 41:02Speaker 2: not a bad thing. What would happen if I gave
- 41:04Speaker 2: you a credit card nowadays?
- 41:05Speaker 9: No?
- 41:05Speaker 4: Today, I think I'd be okay with it. Like maybe
- 41:08Speaker 4: even a year or two ago it would have blown
- 41:10Speaker 4: up out of country.
- 41:10Speaker 2: It wouldn't be So you need to know your personality
- 41:12Speaker 2: and whether that's going to be totally totally next person said,
- 41:16Speaker 2: if she's offered permanency in twenty twenty six, she should
- 41:19Speaker 2: be receiving holiday pay union chats asap needed.
- 41:24Speaker 3: There you go, good to know.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Well, yes and no, so absolutely agree. But I'm pretty
- 41:28Speaker 2: sure holiday pay only works like once you're in the job. Yeah,
- 41:32Speaker 2: like your contract doesn't start until the first date. Yeah,
- 41:36Speaker 2: so maybe you get holiday pay next year for like
- 41:39Speaker 2: the twenty twenty seven holidays, but you don't get it
- 41:42Speaker 2: this year. Does that make sense? Because there's no way,
- 41:44Speaker 2: like if I took on a new staff member, logically,
- 41:47Speaker 2: I wouldn't be like, oh, Jess, come work for me
- 41:49Speaker 2: from you know, the start of February. I'll just start
- 41:52Speaker 2: paying you now. Yeah, that doesn't make sense to me.
- 41:55Speaker 2: But again, I'm not a teacher, so that might not
- 41:57Speaker 2: be how it works. I'm just a little bit like
- 41:59Speaker 2: call you union anyway and find out and last one
- 42:02Speaker 2: I'll give you. This person said, absolutely, don't do it,
- 42:04Speaker 2: Just go get a casual or retail or cafe job.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Credit is always a trap. Yes, yes, yes, true, all right,
- 42:11Speaker 2: I feel like that's a good rap on it. I
- 42:14Speaker 2: don't think we should be getting a credit card to
- 42:16Speaker 2: get through the summer season, not because it wouldn't help us,
- 42:18Speaker 2: but because I think it's a slippery slope. Fair now,
- 42:21Speaker 2: I do, and I don't want to get into this
- 42:23Speaker 2: next segment. We have set the expectation that every year
- 42:26Speaker 2: we give you a Bloopers rap, and unfortunately, you guys
- 42:30Speaker 2: blow up our DMS telling us how funny and how
- 42:32Speaker 2: much you'd love it and how you hope it never
- 42:34Speaker 2: goes away. So you would have heard about our producer, Emma.
- 42:39Speaker 2: But then we also have Sam, who is our audio engineer,
- 42:42Speaker 2: and Sam likes to keep track of us and maybe
- 42:45Speaker 2: just keep us a little bit humble. So every year
- 42:48Speaker 2: Sam collects little audio clips and files them away to
- 42:51Speaker 2: humble us at the end, and none of us have
- 42:55Speaker 2: heard this bloop is real yet because Emma Gate keeps
- 42:58Speaker 2: it until we start recording live let's just jump in.
- 43:02Speaker 2: What's Sam going to roast us about this year?
- 43:06Speaker 3: Let's do it.
- 43:06Speaker 9: It's been a big year as she's on the money,
- 43:10Speaker 9: and it would be remiss of me if I didn't
- 43:12Speaker 9: give you a look behind the scenes of the show.
- 43:15Speaker 9: Oh sorry, not remiss. How do you say, Victoria?
- 43:18Speaker 3: And I think it would be a miss if me
- 43:20Speaker 3: not to mention that.
- 43:21Speaker 9: Honestly, I feel bad if I'd let Victoria know she
- 43:24Speaker 9: was getting sayings wrong earlier in the year, we'd have
- 43:26Speaker 9: been able to nip this in the bud or but according.
- 43:31Speaker 2: To v you need to nip that in the butt.
- 43:33Speaker 2: It's also up to management to nip.
- 43:34Speaker 6: That in the butt.
- 43:35Speaker 3: Now.
- 43:35Speaker 9: This year we started full video episodes for Wednesday Deep Dives.
- 43:39Speaker 9: Why haven't we done this for the Friday A ms, Well,
- 43:42Speaker 9: it's mostly so that girls can record audio and do
- 43:45Speaker 9: other important things at the same time, like apply cutical oil.
- 43:50Speaker 3: Has anyone ever said sorry, sorry before.
- 44:05Speaker 9: I keep talking?
- 44:06Speaker 3: Okay, sorry, oh sorry, okay, we were doing it on
- 44:11Speaker 3: the slot.
- 44:12Speaker 9: I've always known Beck was the chill one of the group,
- 44:15Speaker 9: but this year she was almost as chill as a
- 44:17Speaker 9: certain turtle from finding.
- 44:19Speaker 4: Neba totally totally, totally, totally, totally, totally, totally, totally totally.
- 44:25Speaker 9: And while Victoria's Spotify wrapped may say otherwise, this year,
- 44:30Speaker 9: revealed that her favorite band is no doubt.
- 44:33Speaker 2: I'm just a girl. I'm just a girl. I'm just
- 44:35Speaker 2: a girl.
