- 0:01I've heard it said that people can change, but only if they
- 0:04want to. So what would it take for you to
- 0:07try it? Change the way you think, feel,
- 0:10relate and experience situations.
- 0:13For me, I wanted to find the truth and little by little I did
- 0:17become different and old conditionings gone.
- 0:22Then I set a new course. I refer to that as the second
- 0:26clock. Join me, click follow, like and
- 0:29subscribe and let's see where this leads.
- 0:33The more and more I settle into this awareness that we have the
- 0:36choice. The choice to accept things as
- 0:40they are. Be happy.
- 0:42Be disappointed. The more I realized that the old
- 0:46conditioning that I had been holding on to, that had kind of
- 0:49anchored the way I thought and felt about things, wasn't
- 0:53necessary to hold on to anymore. I realized this when I stumbled
- 0:59back into old habits. It happened around a gift.
- 1:04Anyone that knows me, and I mean knows me really well, especially
- 1:09from when I was younger, will tell you that I'm a terrible
- 1:12gift recipient. I don't know if I just missed
- 1:15the day that they taught how to receive gifts graciously.
- 1:20Yeah, I know On my face you can see it all.
- 1:25So if you're actually a person handing me a gift, it's usually
- 1:29met with a face filled with confusion.
- 1:31And no matter how much I try to mask it, I can't because
- 1:36following my face then comes the verbal observations, usually
- 1:43filled with more confusion, questioning and judgement, which
- 1:48leads to disappointment on both sides because nobody wants to
- 1:52give a gift knowing that it's going to be observed and
- 1:56critiqued. So what ended up happening for
- 2:00me is I told people to stop giving me gifts.
- 2:04I just said don't worry about it.
- 2:07Write me a nice note, I'm good. And that was my way to protect
- 2:11myself. But what was I protecting myself
- 2:14from? I guess it was being let down.
- 2:21See, there's the stumble. I didn't understand what it was
- 2:25to receive a gift in the 1st place.
- 2:27I was too busy trying to figure out why it was being given to
- 2:30me. What was the point?
- 2:33I guess I think of receiving gifts the way some people think
- 2:36about New Year's Eve celebrations.
- 2:38They get all excited and inevitably it's just a night.
- 2:45So here's how I figured out what I hadn't figured out for so long
- 2:51before I walked into my condo and it seemed cleaner and
- 2:56quieter than I remembered it to be.
- 3:00The day before, one of my closest friends and her family
- 3:03had been staying here, and now they were gone.
- 3:07My friend took careful consideration on making the
- 3:09place spotless. I dashed into the condo right
- 3:13before my gym class. I looked around.
- 3:16I surveyed the place, and right before I left, I noticed a gift
- 3:20basket on the coffee table. At this point, most people would
- 3:27sigh, thinking how sweet, how unexpected, how lucky they are.
- 3:33But my instinct was to take a deep breath, brace for impact.
- 3:37As I slowly walked over to the coffee table and peered in to
- 3:42the gift basket, I saw leather goods and I realized I didn't
- 3:48have enough time to sit and really understand what it was
- 3:53that I was looking at. So I headed off to the gym.
- 3:58While walking to the gym, I thought she didn't need to buy
- 4:01me anything. I mean seeing her was all I
- 4:05really needed. I mean, I hope she didn't spend
- 4:08a lot. I really don't need any more
- 4:11stuff. I hope I like it.
- 4:14What if I don't? And so the thoughts started to
- 4:17whirl. I got up the stairs in my gym,
- 4:21got in my class, thoughts still going, all the questioning,
- 4:26following by judging. And then the class started and I
- 4:29realized you're not here for that long, so you need to stay
- 4:33present. And that gift, it'll be waiting
- 4:35for you when you're done. I'm being really honest about
- 4:39how I reacted because I was in it the old way.
- 4:45I responded to gifts had crept up and I was aware this time.
- 4:50I was aware of how uncomfortable I was with the judgment and the
- 4:55build up to the potential disappointment.
- 4:59A part of me was disappointed with my reaction, and the other
- 5:02part of me just didn't want to go back up to the condo.
- 5:08Maybe I could just avoid it altogether, pretend I never saw
- 5:12it, but I knew that that was ridiculous.
- 5:17I went upstairs and I sat down, pulled the gift basket towards
- 5:22me and took out the first leather.
- 5:23Good. It looked like a wallet.
- 5:27I could have sworn it was a wallet when I first looked at it
- 5:31and I was wrong, and I found myself smirking for the next few
- 5:38minutes. I would realize how wrong I was
- 5:41every step of the way as I opened what I thought was a
- 5:44wallet to find out it wasn't a wallet, I realized it was
- 5:47actually a travel jewelry case, something that I never told her
- 5:51that I needed, but I actually did.
- 5:54I guess she knows me better than I thought.
- 5:56And then that's where the smart came.
- 5:59I know she knows me better than I thought.
- 6:04I took out the next leather good.
- 6:06This one was more obvious. It was one of those black
- 6:09leather phone case wallet holder things.
- 6:13I recognized it instantly. She had been wearing the same
- 6:16one but in tobacco brown for the whole trip.
- 6:20My smile broadened. She bought me something just
- 6:23like what she wears, but in my color.
- 6:27Why I smiled is because we're the people that can go to
- 6:30Marshalls in totally different cities.
- 6:32I in Los Angeles, her in Michigan and find the same
- 6:35sweatshirt with a very specific design and then be on FaceTime
- 6:41and be wearing them. The odds of that happening very
- 6:45low. So to know that she wanted me to
- 6:48have something like she has made me smile.
- 6:53But then I saw a little flash of gold out of the pocket and I
- 6:58instantly knew what it was and I started to choke up and as I
- 7:04pulled it out I started to cry. I realized exactly what it was
- 7:10that was in that pocket. It was her bracelet.
- 7:14She had been wearing it throughout the trip and now it's
- 7:17here. 2 days prior I had commented on how I liked it.
- 7:23What she didn't know is that I liked it because I have one
- 7:26that's similar. And again, I thought it was
- 7:29funny that we both have similar things.
- 7:33I sat there and allowed the emotions to come up, and as they
- 7:38rose, the tears started to fall. I had realized in that moment
- 7:46something that I hadn't realized before in all the years that
- 7:49I've been given gifts and received them so poorly.
- 7:53It wasn't about the items. It really was about knowing that
- 7:57somebody cares, knowing that somebody thought of you, knowing
- 8:02that somebody wants to give something to you.
- 8:05I took that moment in and I allowed myself to connect dots
- 8:09that I hadn't before. And as I sat there looking at
- 8:14the gold bracelet in my hand, I started to think about these
- 8:18gold beaded bracelets that her and her daughters are wearing
- 8:21throughout the trip. I think she was wearing two or
- 8:24three. Same with her daughters.
- 8:27I had admired those, but I never mentioned that to her.
- 8:31I realized that I should I compose myself.
- 8:36I reached into the gift basket and I took out this little
- 8:41pouch. It's velvet sweet.
- 8:45And I unzipped it and I pulled out 2 gold beaded bracelets and
- 8:51I started to cry again. This time the tears really
- 8:57flowed. I had stood in so much judgement
- 9:00leading up to opening this gift, So much so I didn't even want to
- 9:04know what was inside. I had created all these reasons
- 9:08why I should be disappointed, pre emptive disappointment that
- 9:12was going to protect me. It didn't.
- 9:16It actually hurt me because here I was judging somebody that
- 9:22really put a lot of thought into this gift, really cared, and
- 9:26here I was trying to push it away.
- 9:31As I sat confronted with this realization, I let myself feel
- 9:35into all of these emotions. I had been so wrong, not just
- 9:42with her, but with many people before her.
- 9:45I don't know why I had done it. Maybe at some point I had been
- 9:50disappointed and I just decided just assume the worst so you
- 9:55can't be let down. I honestly couldn't tell you why
- 9:59I would act the way I acted, but I realized I couldn't act that
- 10:04way anymore. It wasn't fair.
- 10:06It wasn't fair to me and how I experienced receiving and it
- 10:12wasn't fair to my friend. Then I got to the note.
- 10:18She confirmed there that she gave me the bracelet off her
- 10:20wrist, and then she told me that she had made that little velvet
- 10:24pouch that I thought was sweet. How could I have been so scared?
- 10:30How could I have wanted to be right by having the gift somehow
- 10:34be a let down? The only thing that let me down
- 10:37was my old ways. After reading the note, I let
- 10:43myself cry some more. Have a real good purge.
- 10:49Purge of decades worth of emotions stored up and now
- 10:54released. I texted my friend and I just
- 10:59said thank you for so many things.
- 11:04She wrote back simply, I love you so much.
- 11:09That was it. All her care and consideration
- 11:14was put into that basket because she loved me and I needed to
- 11:19take that in too. I needed to understand that it
- 11:23didn't matter what was inside that basket.
- 11:25It just mattered that I understood that somebody can
- 11:28show up, somebody can care. The gift she gave me, in the
- 11:35end, it wasn't about the leather goods, the bracelets.
- 11:39No, it was about the gift of friendship, the gift of her
- 11:43understanding that she knows I'm a terrible gift recipient.
- 11:48And she put herself into the line of fire and she did it.
- 11:53And she taught me a lesson. And that was the true gift.
- 11:59Thank you. Gift received.
