Latest / SECOND CLOCK™ / SEASON 8 | BACKSLIDE

- 0:01What if you learned that the time was always now to make a
- 0:04choice, change direction, choose you.
- 0:06But where do you start and how will you know when you got
- 0:09there? That's what the second clock is.
- 0:12It's a time to try, the chance to experience everything you
- 0:16wish you had but haven't yet. A time to re evaluate where you
- 0:20are and where you're headed while letting go of ideas of
- 0:23what you should be doing, who you think you need to be, and
- 0:26realize who you are. Now.
- 0:29Join me, click follow, like and subscribe and let's see where
- 0:33this leads. I've been thinking a lot about
- 0:39the value we put on staying the same, living a life unchanged.
- 0:45If you switch it up, maybe you get a haircut, you dye your
- 0:49hair, I don't know, you do something different.
- 0:53People have something to say as though it's their place to say
- 0:58something, as though it's their way of saying I notice that
- 1:03you're trying to change. There's a stigma around it, the
- 1:08stigma of somebody exploring being different and maybe
- 1:14changing out of necessity. I don't know why staying the
- 1:18same is so coveted, but it seems to be.
- 1:22I know recently I started to backslide, and I quickly
- 1:27realized that the changes that I had made in my life were there
- 1:32to suit me. There were guardrails to keep me
- 1:36on the right track. So how did I backslide?
- 1:41I had work deadlines, deadlines I hadn't had imposed on me in
- 1:45years. The funny thing is, I used to
- 1:49operate at, I guess, 100% all the time with these deadlines
- 1:55always looming. I saw them as challenges, ways
- 2:01to rise to the occasion when a deadline was truncated.
- 2:05I tried harder. That same situation happened to
- 2:08me over the last three weeks, but I didn't have an option.
- 2:15I didn't want to try harder. I just had to get it done.
- 2:19And that's how I backslid. Everything in my life started
- 2:24slipping, starting with my sleep.
- 2:28Then it was my peace. I was getting snippy and testy
- 2:33and short with anyone and everyone.
- 2:37Then there was the visual signs. My nails were worn down, my
- 2:44bangs, which used to run across my entire forehead were now too
- 2:47long to do that, and they were side swept, so much so that I
- 2:52thought maybe I would just grow my bangs out all together.
- 2:56But as Saturday rolled around, I saw the light.
- 3:00It was the end of these pressing deadlines and I was ready.
- 3:05Ready to say goodbye to that version of myself.
- 3:10A version that I knew too well before that person would show up
- 3:15for work. Like it was my purpose, my
- 3:19calling was to meet a deadline. We put so much emphasis on
- 3:24people finding their purpose, their true path, their calling.
- 3:31And I can't say that my calling was to meet a deadline.
- 3:35I can't say that my purpose was to show myself how little I
- 3:40could sleep, how testy I could become, how unkempt I could be
- 3:46in the process. I think that I used to want to
- 3:50take on those deadlines as a challenge, as a way to measure
- 3:55my abilities, my follow through, my give it all you got side.
- 4:01It was a way for me to be an extreme people pleaser, someone
- 4:05who could practice saying no so well that when given a task
- 4:10almost impossible, I could see it as a challenge rather than
- 4:15the cost is too great. But after these last few weeks
- 4:20and the toll it took on me, I see the change.
- 4:25I saw it manifest when I was talking to a friend of mine that
- 4:28was helping me out. We were in the final days of
- 4:32pushing through this deadline and she was so kind to show up
- 4:37at a moment's notice. Every day a new thing was going
- 4:41on and I just needed some extra hands.
- 4:45And for whatever reason, even though she showed up kind and
- 4:50accommodating, I didn't return the favor.
- 4:54I showed up sleep deprived, short tempered and rude.
- 5:01We were sitting there working, and I must have said something,
- 5:05maybe one too many things, that was snappy and short, and all of
- 5:10a sudden I saw her sit back, shoulders hunched over like she
- 5:16was trying to disappear, recede into the wall.
- 5:22It looks so familiar to me. It reminded me of so many movies
- 5:26where a child is watching her parents fight or something and
- 5:31they're scared but they can't leave so they just try to
- 5:36shrink. It was then that I realized that
- 5:40the cost was too great and the changes that I was making to
- 5:45make this deadline didn't make sense anymore.
- 5:50Not for me at least. I should have pushed back when
- 5:55this was asked of me because I knew what it was going to ask of
- 5:59me. I should have said no, but
- 6:03instead I'd found a workaround around saying no in place of no.
- 6:10I would say sure, but it's going to cost more.
- 6:16Somehow that levelled things in my mind, made things fair and
- 6:22balanced. But the amount of work and the
- 6:26amount of change that I was going to have to take on to make
- 6:30that deadline happen, that's what I realized didn't make
- 6:36sense for me anymore. And even though I found myself
- 6:42backsliding into old ways, I was able for a minute to find the
- 6:47current version of myself, to see my friend show up the way
- 6:52she did and then receive the way she did.
- 6:55I realized, no, it's not about the money.
- 6:59It's about saying no. It's about accepting that it's
- 7:04OK to change. It's OK to not want to show up
- 7:08the way you have for so long just because that's who you've
- 7:13been to many people. It's OK to want to reevaluate
- 7:18you. It's OK to say, maybe that's how
- 7:21I was before. Maybe it worked well for
- 7:25everyone around me. But now I'm not so sure I'm
- 7:30benefiting the same way that maybe I thought I used to.
- 7:34When Saturday was over, I celebrated by cutting my bangs.
- 7:39I restored order to my hair. Then I took a long bath and a
- 7:46big sigh of relief. There was some kind of
- 7:51celebratory moment of feeling like I did make those deadlines,
- 7:55and I didn't know if I was going to be able to make those kind of
- 7:57deadlines again. So at that moment, I was
- 8:01celebrating saying goodbye to that pressure, that unnecessary
- 8:06stress that I put on myself just because I couldn't say no.
- 8:11We do that so often. We'd rather take the hit than
- 8:16say no. We'd rather abandoned ourselves
- 8:19and let somebody else think that we can't show up for them.
- 8:25But in doing all that, I proved that I couldn't have it both
- 8:29ways. I was abandoning someone and
- 8:33that someone obviously was me, the current me, the person that
- 8:39has worked so hard to design her weeks, her days, so that they
- 8:45have a certain balance to them. My days start early.
- 8:50I don't know if that's a new thing, but it's my thing now and
- 8:55I've embraced it. I don't jump up and go to the
- 8:59gym at 5:00 in the morning. Instead I just chill then walk
- 9:05my dog a little bit, get my kids off to school.
- 9:09Sometimes I take a morning class at the gym.
- 9:15Other days my dog and I walk over and we sit and get a
- 9:18matcha. Well my dog eats peanut butter
- 9:21treats while I have my matcha. We both have to enjoy our
- 9:24morning and then maybe I take an afternoon workout class.
- 9:30I like having these workout class punctuate my day because
- 9:34it reminds me that this is my day, my time.
- 9:40So many of us, we put ourselves in the back burner.
- 9:43We say we don't have time for this or time for that.
- 9:46We forget to cut our bangs, do our nails, take a bath, brush
- 9:50our teeth. You know, all the things you
- 9:53should be doing to take care of yourself daily or weekly or
- 9:57monthly. And somehow we say we're too
- 9:59busy. Some of us create our own
- 10:02busyness. I was guilty of that a lot.
- 10:06My old business partner said to me one day, you love saying that
- 10:10you're busy. You say all the time, I'm so
- 10:14busy, I'm so busy. And she said, what if you just
- 10:18are busy and don't talk about it?
- 10:21And I realized, yeah, I should give that a shot.
- 10:25And I did. I took the word busy out of my
- 10:28vocabulary for a while. Even now, I don't really say it.
- 10:33I say work is really full on. And it's interesting.
- 10:38I think I used to say that I was so busy as it was like a badge
- 10:43of honor, that somehow being so busy meant that I was better at
- 10:50doing life than others. But I don't actually think so.
- 10:55Not anymore, at least after these few weeks.
- 10:59I was talking to different friends here and there and they
- 11:01were like, I haven't heard from you in a while.
- 11:02And I was like, yeah, work has been pretty full on.
- 11:06It's been taking a lot of my attention away.
- 11:09And I would hear them say kind of like in defense of them
- 11:13themselves and their days. Oh, I've been so busy too.
- 11:18It's been so busy on my end. Work, kids, just been a lot and
- 11:25it was like a competition that I had entered into unknowingly
- 11:30that I didn't really want to be a part of.
- 11:32And I would say honestly, I wish I wasn't busy.
- 11:37I like my days when they're kind of chill, kind of expected, kind
- 11:43of my own. Right now, I feel like I've
- 11:47turned the keys over to someone else and I don't like that.
- 11:51I'm sorry to hear that you're so busy.
- 11:54It was interesting when I took the word busy out of my
- 11:56vocabulary. I just had to embrace that it
- 12:00was what it was until it was different.
- 12:04And little by little, I realized that word was making things even
- 12:08more intense. It's like if I had a moment to
- 12:12breathe, I didn't want to because I didn't have that word
- 12:16propelling me forward. I couldn't use it as my excuse,
- 12:20the way I could measure my day. I think I thought that that's
- 12:24what it was to be a good business owner, to be busy.
- 12:30I think it distracted me in every way.
- 12:33I could work late, go to work early, be at home but not be
- 12:38present. I could miss dinner.
- 12:42I could work on weekends. I could be grouchy and blame it
- 12:46on work. I did all those things these
- 12:50last three weeks, and as I saw my new ways, my changed self
- 12:57slipping back into old ways, I thought change is good.
- 13:02Change should be embraced, not stigmatized.
- 13:07We should embrace somebody when they want to do something
- 13:10different for themselves, when they want to explore a new way.
- 13:16Maybe that way it's going to be so different from their old way,
- 13:21their conditioned way, that maybe they won't relate to their
- 13:25old friends or their old family or whomever the same.
- 13:30And maybe that's OK. Take children, for example.
- 13:35We watch them change. We celebrate who they are today,
- 13:40knowing that they're going to be someone totally different
- 13:42tomorrow. We watch the little girls loving
- 13:46dresses and dolls only to reject them later and only want to wear
- 13:51pants and never talk about how they like dolls in the 1st
- 13:55place. We embrace all that change and
- 13:59then at some point we just say this is who you are.
- 14:04This is who will accept you to be just like this, frozen in
- 14:10time. I've talked to so many people
- 14:13over the last few years. They've started noticing things
- 14:17about themselves that they don't understand how they got this
- 14:21way. Why they make the choices they
- 14:24make, why the people that are in their life are in their life
- 14:26still. Why they allow toxic
- 14:30relationships to consume them. Knowing that the other person in
- 14:34the relationship doesn't really care that much, isn't as
- 14:39invested, but they don't know how to let go of that side.
- 14:44How can they abandoned that version of themself?
- 14:48The person that they trusted was them.
- 14:51Well, I did and I realized that the me that I thought that I
- 14:57was, was made-up of ideas of others. made-up of ideas that I
- 15:02put on myself because of others expectations that I wanted to
- 15:07fulfill. I wanted to be loyal to others.
- 15:12I didn't want anyone to feel like I wasn't showing up for
- 15:14them. So now I show up, but for the
- 15:19person that needs it the most. That's what we have to do.
- 15:24We have to show up for ourselves.
- 15:26We have to be loyal to ourselves.
- 15:29It's important to stop and say, what do I need?
- 15:34How am I today? Is this how I want to be today?
- 15:39Because I can promise you, in the last few weeks, I didn't
- 15:43want to be that way. Not even for a minute.
- 15:47I didn't want to put making a deadline above everything else.
- 15:53I didn't want to be short tempered.
- 15:55I didn't want to be neglecting people and myself.
- 16:01I didn't want to backslide. Instead, I wanted to remain
- 16:07changed. Thanks for listening.
