Latest / Mom Gone Mild / How I Found My Sparkle Back: 5 Things That Helped Me Feel Like Myself Again
Transcript
- 0:17Hey guys, welcome back to Mom Gone Mild.
- 0:20Wow, have I missed saying that? Also, you like my new little
- 0:25studio? I'm in my son's nursery.
- 0:28Anyways, yeah, so we are officially in season 2.
- 0:32First of all, I just want to say thank you guys for sticking
- 0:34around. I know I took a little over a
- 0:37month off, but honestly, I really needed it.
- 0:41I needed that time with my family.
- 0:44I really needed to think where I wanted this.
- 0:46Just podcast to go and breathe for a second.
- 0:49And I realized something during the break.
- 0:52I feel like season too, is going to feel probably way different
- 0:57than season 1. I was still trying to find my
- 1:00voice. I had obviously never done a
- 1:03podcast before, so I was kind of like figuring it out as I went.
- 1:06I talked a lot about my early days, my party girl days, and
- 1:10yeah, that was a huge chapter in my life.
- 1:12And you know what? It was fun, of course, you know?
- 1:16But I feel like we're in the present now.
- 1:20And that version of me just isn't me anymore, and that's
- 1:25okay. I don't regret that chapter of
- 1:28my life at all because it taught me a lot.
- 1:31It taught me a lot of the stuff that I want.
- 1:33It taught me a lot of the stuff that I didn't want.
- 1:36It taught me responsibility. Like, maybe don't get drunk at a
- 1:40Clippers game and yell at Blake Griffin.
- 1:42Yeah, that actually happened. And so if you're new here, just
- 1:47go back and listen to season 1 because that story still cracks
- 1:51me up to this day. It's so embarrassing.
- 1:53But this podcast I feel like is going to be growing with me.
- 1:58I can only talk about what I'm currently living through.
- 2:02I can only share my experiences from where I'm at today.
- 2:05Right now, that's motherhood, womanhood, marriage, health,
- 2:09just friendships, finding confidence again, and just
- 2:14finding out who I am. I just feel like that is what
- 2:16feels authentic to me. Now don't get me wrong, every
- 2:19now and then I will still splurge and have a little
- 2:22edible, you know, take a nibble here, but definitely not the
- 2:26whole brownie. We have matured a little bit
- 2:29over here at least. So I hope you guys enjoy growing
- 2:33with me because I'm just really excited for where this podcast
- 2:37is heading. Anyways, enough about that.
- 2:40Let's catch up because I haven't talked to you in a while, so
- 2:45grab your coffee. Whatever the biggest thing that
- 2:49has happened. Well, obviously Axel turned 1.
- 2:52How has it been one year? I don't know so his birthday
- 2:56theme was officially one. See what I did there I know it's
- 3:01kind of cheesy, but I loved it His birthday was beautiful.
- 3:05We were surrounded by so much love, you know, just it meant
- 3:12everything to us. But let me tell you something.
- 3:14When I say it was hot, it was hot.
- 3:16It was 103 degrees. I laughed, I cried.
- 3:20I almost went to the ERI wish I was joking, but I was not.
- 3:24I overheated, and so did a few other people.
- 3:28But looking back, yeah, I learned something.
- 3:33I spent weeks stressing, obsessing over these
- 3:36decorations, food, timelines, just balloons that we didn't
- 3:39even get to blow up because it was so hot.
- 3:41And then the day came and I just realized I wasn't being present,
- 3:48I was making sure everyone else was OK instead of just soaking
- 3:53in my baby's first birthday. I feel like I was everywhere
- 3:57except actually in the moment. So next year I told everyone we
- 4:01are doing a family trip, we're saving money.
- 4:04Maybe not. I mean, it was pretty expensive,
- 4:06but hopefully having less stress and just making great memories.
- 4:11Now, don't think we didn't make good memories.
- 4:14But your girl was stressed. Yeah.
- 4:18I did not sleep the whole week before.
- 4:20But you know what? He's my first.
- 4:21So I am still learning. And honestly, I feel like that
- 4:26kind of ties in today's episode. I'm.
- 4:30We're learning, growing, changing because I feel like
- 4:33during the break, I realized something got my sparkle back.
- 4:36If you're a Bravo girly and you know Brittany from Vanderpump
- 4:40Rules the Valley, you know exactly what I mean.
- 4:43I'm not going to like, do her Kentucky voice because I'm not
- 4:47good at accents. But I got my sparkle back and I
- 4:51feel like when I used to hear that, I would be like, what the
- 4:53hell is a sparkle? Are they talking about Twilight?
- 4:56And I'd be like, that's kind of cute, I guess.
- 4:58But you know what? I totally understand where it
- 5:01comes from now. I get it because I feel like
- 5:04somewhere over this last year, I didn't really find the old me
- 5:09again. That's what I was like on this
- 5:11quest for. I feel like I found a version of
- 5:14me I honestly like even more. Not 21 year old Lex, not party
- 5:20girl Lex. I mean literally just me, a
- 5:24woman who I feel like it's finally comfortable just being
- 5:27exactly who she is. And I wanted to share 5 things
- 5:31that honestly I feel like changed my life.
- 5:34Not because I have all the answers, because girl, you know
- 5:38I don't. I am definitely not an expert,
- 5:41but maybe one of these will help someone listening.
- 5:45So here we go #1 I feel like this one could be kind of hard
- 5:50but stop caring so much what other people think.
- 5:53I know it's been said so many times, I get it.
- 5:58But I feel like if you really think about it, how much of your
- 6:01life are you living for other people?
- 6:04I so worry constantly about this, especially as a girl with
- 6:08anxiety. I would just think like am I too
- 6:12loud? Am I too much?
- 6:14Am I too opinionated? Do I have too many tattoos?
- 6:18Like I used to overthink so much.
- 6:20I used to be like am I too outgoing?
- 6:23And now I can honestly say I just don't care.
- 6:26Yes, I am loud, I am outgoing. I laugh way too hard.
- 6:30It's almost embarrassing. I talk with my hands now.
- 6:34I'm going to like think about that whole episode.
- 6:37But you know, I just. I feel like I I wear what I
- 6:40want. I love my tattoos.
- 6:43I just say now what's on my mind and if someone doesn't like me,
- 6:49I feel like that's OK. I don't expect everyone to.
- 6:53I am literally just being myself.
- 6:56And The funny thing is, I feel like once you stop trying to be
- 6:59liked by everyone and so many people, you actually become such
- 7:04a happier person. You find your people.
- 7:08The right people, I promise will stay.
- 7:10The wrong people will leave. And it is a blessing.
- 7:15When I first started this podcast, I was like, girl, who's
- 7:18even going to listen to this podcast?
- 7:20I was like, just in my head, I was just, am I going to say too
- 7:26much? Am I going to say not enough?
- 7:28Am I going to run out of things to say?
- 7:29Are people going to like me? Something?
- 7:32I don't know. Just somewhere along the way, I
- 7:34realized if I wasn't me, I feel like this just wouldn't work.
- 7:39Virtue find something that is just yours Look look look before
- 7:45you come from me. I love being Axels mom.
- 7:47It is the greatest thing I've ever done.
- 7:50But I feel like I never wanted motherhood to be the one thing
- 7:53that defined me. I am so much more than a mom.
- 7:56I'm so much more than a wife for me, that thing, I guess in a way
- 8:02just like my thing became fitness.
- 8:04And before you roll your eyes and you're like, girl, you don't
- 8:07look like a fitness girly. Hear me out.
- 8:11Fitness I feel like isn't about having ABS or looking a certain
- 8:15way because trust me, I do not have ABS.
- 8:18I am not that delulu. I have loose skin, you know,
- 8:23from carrying my son and just losing a lot of weight.
- 8:26And I'm still just learning to accept that.
- 8:29But to me, fitness is just not about looking perfect, it's
- 8:34about proving to yourself that you can do something, something
- 8:37that's really hard and out of your comfort zone.
- 8:40When I started showing up for myself everyday, whether it was
- 8:44a workout, a healthier meal, or simply just going on a walk, I
- 8:49feel like I started trusting myself again.
- 8:51Then Randy and I decided to build our garage gym.
- 8:54And if you've been following, you know that it's my dream gym.
- 8:57But yeah, you know, we thought it would take like a weekend,
- 9:01but we were wrong. It actually ended up taking
- 9:03months. We had heat waves, we had no
- 9:07babysitter. We had project after project.
- 9:09But I feel like looking back now, it became one of my
- 9:14favorite moments because we built something together and now
- 9:18I actually get excited to work out.
- 9:21Younger Lex would have looked at me and been like girl who argue
- 9:26or this. If someone asked me like what my
- 9:28hobbies were, I'd probably say drinking with my friends and
- 9:31listen, I don't judge anybody. That was a huge part of my life.
- 9:37I was a social butterfly. I just feel like it's not me
- 9:41anymore. Now I get excited about trying
- 9:43healthy recipes, going to Pilates or seeing if I can lift
- 9:46a little heavier today. Not because I want to be like
- 9:50the skinny person. I mean, that would be nice.
- 9:53But you know, I want to be strong.
- 9:55I want to be healthy. I want to be here and present
- 9:58for a long time with my family. And I feel like to me, fitness
- 10:03is just that. But fitness might not be your
- 10:06thing. Maybe it's joining a book club,
- 10:08maybe it's crocheting, maybe it's painting.
- 10:11Gosh, I wish I was that talented.
- 10:14Maybe it's running, which will never be my thing, I don't know.
- 10:18But find something that's yours. Something that just reminds you
- 10:23that who you were before being someone's mom or someone's wife,
- 10:28you were you and I feel like you still deserve that.
- 10:31Or three. OK, so this is a good one.
- 10:34Protect your peace. I feel like this one took me
- 10:37probably the longest time to learn and honestly I'm still
- 10:43learning. It's you know, I'm always a work
- 10:45in progress. When I was younger I literally
- 10:48thought everyone was my friend. My friend actually jokes about
- 10:51it like you have a million best friends.
- 10:53But now I can probably count my closest friends on one hand,
- 10:58which it was a lot before, trust me.
- 11:01And honestly, I kind of prefer it that way.
- 11:04You know, a real friend celebrates your wins.
- 11:06They check in, they show up. And no, we don't have to talk
- 11:11every day or every month. My best friendships are the ones
- 11:15where we can go months without talking or picking up the phone.
- 11:20And just like we pick up right where we left off, it just feels
- 11:23like no time has passed. But feel like, here's something
- 11:27I've learned and everyone is going to clap when you start
- 11:30becoming the person you've always wanted to be.
- 11:32And I know that doesn't automatically, I feel like make
- 11:36them a bad person. Sometimes people are just more
- 11:39comfortable with, I guess the version of you that they met,
- 11:43the version that didn't have boundaries, the version that
- 11:47always said yes, the version that played small.
- 11:51But you're allowed to change. You're allowed to outgrow
- 11:54people, you're allowed to become someone they don't recognize
- 11:58anymore because the people who truly love you will make room
- 12:01for your growth, and the ones who don't, maybe they were only
- 12:06meant to be a part of 1 chapter of your story, but not the whole
- 12:09book. I've also learned that just
- 12:12because someone is family doesn't automatically mean that
- 12:15they deserve unlimited access to you.
- 12:18I know that might sound harsh for someone to hear, but I feel
- 12:23like protecting your peace isn't selfish, it's actually healthy
- 12:26and love people and still have boundaries.
- 12:28Those two things can actually exist together.
- 12:32I know, crazy #4 get comfortable being uncomfortable.
- 12:37This one I feel like changed everything.
- 12:39Every opportunity I've had has started off with me being
- 12:44terrified, Starting this podcast, starting my blog,
- 12:48putting myself online. And let me tell you, the
- 12:51Internet can be brutal sometimes.
- 12:54Reaching out to guests I've never met.
- 12:57Just building a community that I'm really proud of.
- 12:59Half the time I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.
- 13:04I'm literally learning as I go. But I'd rather try than spend my
- 13:09whole life just wondering. Like, what if growth is not
- 13:13comfortable? It's actually really
- 13:15uncomfortable. If you're uncomfortable now,
- 13:17you're probably growing. And I think so many of us just
- 13:21stay stuck because we're waiting until we feel ready.
- 13:26And I have a spoiler alert, you're never going to feel
- 13:30completely ready. Just start over, figure it out
- 13:34later. Because the worst thing I feel
- 13:36like that can actually happen is it just doesn't work out.
- 13:40And then you can be like, cool, at least I tried.
- 13:44But the best thing that can happen is it can actually change
- 13:48your life #5 And I promise, I'm almost done.
- 13:51This one is accept yourself. This one, I don't know, it might
- 13:56be pretty hard for certain people.
- 13:59There are things I'd love to change about myself.
- 14:02Obviously, I'm sensitive, I'm emotional.
- 14:05Sometimes I can hold grudges. I'm an open book.
- 14:10I probably overshare. But then I started thinking like
- 14:15those things also make me who I am.
- 14:18Being emotional makes me empathetic.
- 14:21Being open helps people I feel like relate to me.
- 14:24Being sensitive means I care. So instead of constantly trying
- 14:28to fix myself, I started just appreciating myself.
- 14:33I am nowhere near perfect. I promise you I never will be so
- 14:38you'll never hear me say that. But I actually like the woman
- 14:41I'm becoming. I don't think I could have said
- 14:43that a few years ago. I feel like there was a point
- 14:47was part where I didn't even honestly recognize myself in the
- 14:52mirror. Not because of my body, but
- 14:55because of who I had become mentally.
- 14:57I feel like I wasn't living, I was just really surviving.
- 15:01Today I can honestly say I am living again and I don't think
- 15:06getting my old life back was ever really the goal.
- 15:10I feel like becoming someone I'm proud of was one thing I learned
- 15:15over this last year is motherhood didn't create me.
- 15:19And it sure as hell is not going to define me.
- 15:23It introduced me to myself. It forced me to slow down.
- 15:27It forced me to ask myself who I wanted to be.
- 15:30Not just for Axel, but really for me.
- 15:33Because before I can raise a confident little boy, I have to
- 15:37be a confident woman. Feel like our kids don't become
- 15:41what we tell them to become. They become what they see.
- 15:45I want to grow up and just seeing a mom who goes after her
- 15:50dreams, goes after what she wants.
- 15:52Someone who takes care of them self, Someone who laughs too
- 15:56hard, someone who isn't afraid to start over because I have
- 16:00done it so many times. I hope that's kind of what this
- 16:04podcast becomes. To a place where women can come
- 16:09as they are. No filters, no pretending, no
- 16:13perfect Instagram, Pinterest life, even though we would all
- 16:16love it. Just honest, real conversations,
- 16:20real stories, real woman. Because here's the truth.
- 16:24Every single woman has a story worth telling.
- 16:28Some of the women joining me this season are moms.
- 16:31Some are not. Some are business owners,
- 16:36entrepreneurs. Some have overcome things that
- 16:38will probably blow your mind. Some are still in the middle of
- 16:42figuring it out. And that's OK too.
- 16:45I am my hope is that every single episode, I feel like
- 16:49leaves you feeling a little less lonely, a little more inspired,
- 16:55a little more confident to be exactly who you are without
- 16:59fear. If you've been here since season
- 17:021, thank you so much for growing with me.
- 17:05Thank you for giving me this space to grow and talk and just
- 17:08gap. And thank you for letting this
- 17:10podcast evolve. It might not be everybody's cup
- 17:13of tea, and that's totally fine. And thank you for coming back to
- 17:17season 2. That's my biggest thank you.
- 17:20I have a feeling this is going to be our best season yet.
- 17:24I know everyone says the same thing, but I really do.
- 17:27I'm so excited for once to come. Until next Thursday, remember,
- 17:32please don't be afraid to take up space.
- 17:36Laugh too hard. Just wear that outfit.
- 17:38Book the trip, just try something new, try something
- 17:42scary and never apologize for becoming feel like the woman
- 17:46you're meant to be. I will see you guys next week.
- 17:49Same time, same place. I miss saying that too.
- 17:53I missed you guys. Have a good week.
- 17:55Bye.
