- 0:27Speaker 1: the storytelling of you to make a difference for today
- 0:31Speaker 1: and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast

- 1:04Speaker 2: it is Friday. We are back and it is time
- 1:07Speaker 2: to get my team together to celebrate you our incredible
- 1:10Speaker 2: She's on the Money community Today, mister Grici, She's going
- 1:14Speaker 2: to share our favorite money wins or her favorite money
- 1:16Speaker 2: wins from the community. Miss beck sayed has a few
- 1:19Speaker 2: broke tips that she definitely didn't steal from her girlfriend.
- 1:22Speaker 2: We're going to be helping to answer a juicy money
- 1:24Speaker 2: dilemma which this week is all about how to improve
- 1:27Speaker 2: your credit score, and we're going to be unpacking something
- 1:29Speaker 2: that you slid into our DMS about how much is too
- 1:32Speaker 2: much when it comes to chipping in for workers.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Oh, I have feelings.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I'm excited to get to that one. But before we
- 1:40Speaker 2: get there, guys, how are your weeks? What's it been
- 1:44Speaker 2: like in the office? Beck? At home? Jess? What are
- 1:48Speaker 2: we up to?
- 1:49Speaker 4: Not a whole lot, to be honest, The weather has
- 1:51Speaker 4: taken a turn for the worst. Get me, but I
- 1:53Speaker 4: feel we had a few nice days. I was like,
- 1:55Speaker 4: I feel alive. I've been resurrected from my winter slumber.
- 2:00Speaker 4: And then it started raining again and I was like,
- 2:02Speaker 4: oh no, back in slumber. Yeah. So I enjoyed the
- 2:07Speaker 4: summer we had it. But this week it's been like
- 2:09Speaker 4: cozy indoor vibes, lots of crafts, lots of just pottering
- 2:12Speaker 4: around the house.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I noticed that you and I have whipped out our cardigans.
- 2:16Speaker 4: We have we have very tasty.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Earlier this week or even over the weekend, I was
- 2:21Speaker 2: literally wearing T shirt. I was not no jumper under cardigan.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I thought it is on the up, some is coming,
- 2:29Speaker 2: and then the weather was like, hey, guess what gas
- 2:32Speaker 2: lip CARDI whether it is exactly Beck, how's your week
- 2:36Speaker 2: day you've been in the office.
- 2:38Speaker 5: If it's been good, it's been really fun rafughing so busy.
- 2:43Speaker 5: They feel like every week so tired too, because you've
- 2:45Speaker 5: been doing breakfast shows. Breakfast shows, which like, I mean,
- 2:49Speaker 5: I'm really it's fun. I'm happy to be doing it.
- 2:51Speaker 5: I am just filling in, But getting up at four am.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Like that is David.
- 2:56Speaker 5: It feels like not okay for the body, it feels
- 2:59Speaker 5: like really illegal. I'm saying this before I was like,
- 3:02Speaker 5: oh my gosh, like breakfast radio would be a lot.
- 3:06Speaker 5: I mean, shift workers probably go through this too, but
- 3:09Speaker 5: like you would have to reset your.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Entire body clock. Like it's not just shift work where
- 3:14Speaker 2: sometimes you're doing it, sometimes you're not. Like if you
- 3:16Speaker 2: work for a breakfast radio show that's Monday to Friday
- 3:19Speaker 2: every single week at four am, Like what time do
- 3:23Speaker 2: you go to bed? Like four pm?
- 3:24Speaker 5: Absolutely some of these people have children as well, so
- 3:28Speaker 5: they can't ever sleep in and they probably haven't in
- 3:31Speaker 5: years and years and years. So but I mean this
- 3:34Speaker 5: is a little glimpse of that.
- 3:35Speaker 6: But.
- 3:37Speaker 5: Not for me, not for me, but like other than that. Honestly,
- 3:40Speaker 5: it's been It's been really good. My social calendar is
- 3:43Speaker 5: filling up, and my work calendar is filling up. Birthday month,
- 3:46Speaker 5: it's still birthday month. I might just like book myself
- 3:48Speaker 5: an airbnb just alone for celebrations as another birthday celebration.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Like, no, I've been I've been chilling. What about you?
- 3:56Speaker 2: How good this week? I mean Josh today he is
- 4:00Speaker 2: let's call him like head of reception, community engagement manager.
- 4:04Speaker 2: He buys our love on a weekly basis, right like
- 4:07Speaker 2: he's keeper of the jar of chocolates. He's keeper of
- 4:10Speaker 2: everything good that comes into this office space. And today
- 4:14Speaker 2: he met us at the door with wat chess donuts,
- 4:17Speaker 2: really good donuts, a selection. He was like, I have
- 4:20Speaker 2: boxes and boxes of donuts and I was like, yes, king,
- 4:23Speaker 2: thank you. So that was really nice.
- 4:26Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I've been getting back into the flow of things. I've
- 4:28Speaker 2: been playing around on our website, updating a few things.
- 4:31Speaker 2: I feel like Jess and I were talking about square
- 4:33Speaker 2: space before and how obsessed I am with it. Obviously
- 4:36Speaker 2: not a sponsored conversation, but just like how much I
- 4:39Speaker 2: now think I'm an official web designer because I can
- 4:41Speaker 2: do anything guys, do you want a web page builtback?
- 4:44Speaker 2: It's me. I'm going to do it. I can do it.
- 4:47Speaker 5: It's so satisfying.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Well, I love it. You'd probably be all over it
- 4:50Speaker 2: because you're like, yeah, like you know everything, but like me,
- 4:54Speaker 2: a person like me doing our website.
- 4:59Speaker 4: I'm trying to set mine up for my side hustle.
- 5:01Speaker 4: So I come to you.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Can we please have a wine? You can teach me
- 5:04Speaker 2: how to make one of your cute charm necklaces, and
- 5:06Speaker 2: I'll hack your website.
- 5:07Speaker 4: I love that.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I've also been just in the office a lot this week.
- 5:11Speaker 2: We hired a new mortgage broker and I'm currently looking
- 5:13Speaker 2: for one, which is so exciting because the team's growing again.
- 5:17Speaker 2: But with team growth comes team training and like just
- 5:20Speaker 2: getting everyone up to speed and getting everyone on the
- 5:23Speaker 2: same page and like it's exciting, but like it's time consuming.
- 5:27Speaker 2: So that's been my week this week. Donuts definitely the highlight.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Oh yeah, and also our equal payday Monday seems.
- 5:36Speaker 2: So far away now that it's Friday, but I love
- 5:39Speaker 2: a spicy conversation.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Every year, I look forward to the just horrible, horrible comments.
- 5:47Speaker 2: You've been watching the comments, like it's so funny because
- 5:51Speaker 2: the girls actually don't let me post to the shoes
- 5:54Speaker 2: on the money account anymore. Apparently I'm a little bit assertive,
- 5:58Speaker 2: you could say, beg and like their feed to be aesthetic,
- 6:01Speaker 2: and what I am not good at is an aesthetic feed.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I'll just go rogue and post like a picture of
- 6:05Speaker 2: my dog or something, which, to be honest, I reckon
- 6:08Speaker 2: is still pretty engaging, like that's good content according to me. Anyway.
- 6:13Speaker 2: The girls don't let me, but what I do do
- 6:15Speaker 2: is get in the comments.
- 6:17Speaker 4: Can't control from them.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Didn't delete my comments, but you can't block me because
- 6:23Speaker 2: I'm the boss. So it was fun getting in the
- 6:27Speaker 2: comments this week of people being like, well, actually it's this,
- 6:30Speaker 2: and I'd be like, sit down, it's not, it's not.
- 6:33Speaker 5: It's so funny that people get worked like I get.
- 6:36Speaker 5: I do it in every it's always, but it just
- 6:39Speaker 5: feels like like if there's any a single man listening,
- 6:42Speaker 5: just try and imagine that something feels unjust for you
- 6:45Speaker 5: and everyone's saying that it's not actually unjust, and no
- 6:47Speaker 5: one believes you, and then and then also they don't
- 6:50Speaker 5: believe you, but also the being really mean about it
- 6:51Speaker 5: as well, like you feel really sad son. When women
- 6:54Speaker 5: get in the comments, I'm always like, babe, I'm just
- 6:57Speaker 5: trying to make sure that you and your friends have money,
- 7:00Speaker 5: Like do you not want to be on my team?
- 7:02Speaker 2: Like totally, what about this is triggering for you? Can
- 7:07Speaker 2: we talk about it? It's I think the comments Obviously,
- 7:09Speaker 2: I can deal with men who've been dealing with men
- 7:11Speaker 2: for a very long time, like sit down. But it's
- 7:14Speaker 2: when women get in the comments and they say, well,
- 7:16Speaker 2: I'm paid equally, and I'm like.
- 7:18Speaker 5: That is literally survivor bias, Like that is you having
- 7:22Speaker 5: experienced one thing and thinking that that's the experience of
- 7:25Speaker 5: everybody because you've had this one experience.
- 7:28Speaker 2: So it must be true. When they get in my
- 7:31Speaker 2: comments and I'm just like, guys, I actually just want
- 7:33Speaker 2: the best for everybody, Like I want to make sure
- 7:36Speaker 2: that if beck is doing a job and a male
- 7:39Speaker 2: is doing an identical job, they are both going to
- 7:42Speaker 2: get paid exactly the same for the same skills and
- 7:45Speaker 2: experience and what they bring to the job. It's not
- 7:47Speaker 2: about oh, but men's jobs take on more risks and
- 7:51Speaker 2: women take maternity leave. Oh I get that, but we're
- 7:54Speaker 2: talking about when women aren't on any type of leave,
- 7:57Speaker 2: they are still being paid less per hour than a
- 7:59Speaker 2: man for exactly the same job. And that's what gets me,
- 8:03Speaker 2: as you can see, going totally.
- 8:06Speaker 5: Pal's not a pie, you guys. It's not going to
- 8:08Speaker 5: be taken away from anyone else. So just anyway, sorry, Jess.
- 8:11Speaker 2: How is not a pie? Can we make that?
- 8:13Speaker 4: That's very catchup? I'm put that on a T shirt.
- 8:16Speaker 4: A pie. But if you didn't know, equal payday is
- 8:20Speaker 4: just about recognizing the fifty additional days that women on
- 8:22Speaker 4: average have to work to earn the same as a
- 8:24Speaker 4: man in a comparable job. We did a really good
- 8:27Speaker 4: summary post if you don't know about it and want
- 8:29Speaker 4: to learn more. And the WGEA, which is the Workplace
- 8:32Speaker 4: Gender Equality Agency, do a lot of data. It's a
- 8:35Speaker 4: government body. There's a lot of really great information on
- 8:37Speaker 4: their website. We would really encourage you to check it
- 8:39Speaker 4: out just because, as Beck said, fight the good fight,
- 8:42Speaker 4: and even if it's not impacting you, you'll hopefully be
- 8:45Speaker 4: able to improve life for somebody else.
- 8:46Speaker 5: And this is why Jess sits on that side of
- 8:48Speaker 5: the table, you know, coming with the stats, coming with
- 8:51Speaker 5: the facts, coming with the very beautiful posts that you
- 8:55Speaker 5: can check out, Yes, and I'm over here fighting the
- 8:57Speaker 5: good fight.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Deep in the comments, kind of like a troll. But
- 9:03Speaker 2: it's my own business.
- 9:04Speaker 4: And we need both.
- 9:05Speaker 5: We honestly need take.
- 9:06Speaker 4: All to go make the world go round.
- 9:07Speaker 6: Yeah, really done?
- 9:08Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, no worries. Speaking of the world going around,
- 9:12Speaker 2: there have been some very good money wins going around
- 9:14Speaker 2: in our Facebook group this week with Jazicricci. What have
- 9:17Speaker 2: you got to bring to the table? Alrighty.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Firstly, this week, I have a money in from Isabella
- 9:21Speaker 4: who said she had enough Telstra points that she got
- 9:23Speaker 4: two free tickets to the movies this week.
- 9:26Speaker 2: What are Telstra points? Yes, another type of points we
- 9:29Speaker 2: can be collected.
- 9:30Speaker 4: Actually, we're just racking up ideas of the different points,
- 9:33Speaker 4: and movie tickets aren't cheap, so I feel like that's
- 9:35Speaker 4: a big win. Next, I've got a money in from Kim,
- 9:38Speaker 4: who said she used the tourist refund scheme at the airport.
- 9:42Speaker 4: She bought four hundred dollars Sony headphones on sale for
- 9:44Speaker 4: three hundred and twenty one dollars. She's now flying out
- 9:47Speaker 4: and twenty nine dollars came back to her through the
- 9:50Speaker 4: tourist refund scheme.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Huh. Sexy.
- 9:53Speaker 4: I didn't know what it was, so I did a
- 9:54Speaker 4: quick google and apparently if you show your passport, your
- 9:57Speaker 4: boarding pass and all those sorts of things, they just
- 9:59Speaker 4: re fung you the money back at the airport.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Refunge you tax. Yeah.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Is that crazy?
- 10:03Speaker 2: So if you're gonna make a big purchase before going overseas,
- 10:07Speaker 2: and I feel like that's a really good example of it, right,
- 10:09Speaker 2: Like noise canceling headphones, you like wanted some for a
- 10:12Speaker 2: really long time, but haven't justified the purchase, and then
- 10:15Speaker 2: finally you're like, you know what, I'm going to be
- 10:17Speaker 2: in economy for like twenty four hours. I feel like
- 10:20Speaker 2: now's the time to splurge on some noise canceling headphones.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Get the tax back, Yeah, buy them right before you
- 10:26Speaker 4: leave completely. So that's a great win from Kim one
- 10:29Speaker 4: for all of us. I think to keep in mind
- 10:30Speaker 4: if you're planning on traveling next. I've got a money
- 10:33Speaker 4: win from Rachel, also airport themed. Actually, she said she
- 10:36Speaker 4: was bumped off a flight because it was overbooked, so
- 10:38Speaker 4: they put her on another flight the next day out,
- 10:41Speaker 4: which delayed her by eight hours. To compensate her, they
- 10:44Speaker 4: gave her twice the value of her ticket back and
- 10:46Speaker 4: two meal about it. So you didn't even have to
- 10:48Speaker 4: pay for lunch or dinner.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Money weird, So I mean that would have been if
- 10:52Speaker 5: we can, if we're like assuming that both flights were
- 10:55Speaker 5: kind of like the same like return, then that was
- 10:58Speaker 5: all free free completely.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Have you seen those videos on TikTok as well. I
- 11:02Speaker 4: don't think this is a thing here. I think it's
- 11:03Speaker 4: purely an American thing. But again, with the overbooking of
- 11:06Speaker 4: flights and everyone turns up and they need to get
- 11:09Speaker 4: people off, they start offering people cash. And there there
- 11:12Speaker 4: was this video of this girl who was like, oh,
- 11:14Speaker 4: I'm flying from Italy back home or something like that.
- 11:16Speaker 4: The flight's oversold. She's like, I'm just going to wait
- 11:18Speaker 4: and see how high it goes, because like I can
- 11:20Speaker 4: wait a day and that's fine. And so they started
- 11:22Speaker 4: like six hundred dollars, anyone to get off the flight.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Six hundred dollars. No one took her. It went up
- 11:26Speaker 4: to eight hundred, it went out to twelve thousands, sixteen
- 11:28Speaker 4: hundred dollars, and they just put it on another flight.
- 11:32Speaker 4: So like, she's not out, she's to pay for sixteen
- 11:34Speaker 4: hundred dollars overnight hotel. I think maybe a meal voucher
- 11:38Speaker 4: as well.
- 11:38Speaker 5: And she's like, I don't care. I'm just going to
- 11:40Speaker 5: tell my employer that my flight got canceled, which it
- 11:43Speaker 5: kind of did.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I got bumped and literally crazy, Oh my gosh.
- 11:47Speaker 4: So you go. And someone replied and asked, did you
- 11:49Speaker 4: have to request this compensation or did they just offer it?
- 11:52Speaker 4: And Rachel, who shared the money in, said she's gotten
- 11:54Speaker 4: the compensation from airlines before. It usually requires you getting
- 11:57Speaker 4: out the t's and c's and like someone so just
- 12:01Speaker 4: from a bar, if you get put out, read you
- 12:03Speaker 4: t's and c's, because it's true, that's a money win.
- 12:05Speaker 2: And it's usually right there. But they're not going to
- 12:08Speaker 2: step up and be like, oh, Beck, by the way,
- 12:09Speaker 2: because you're impacted, we owe you money.
- 12:11Speaker 5: They're going to be like chasy down the time. Yeah,
- 12:13Speaker 5: they're gonna be like, we gave you like dinner vouchers. Yeah,
- 12:15Speaker 5: and you're like, oh my gosh, yes, so grateful, thanks bye. Yeah,
- 12:18Speaker 5: there's some cash on the table, pick it up.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Yeah, truely.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Next, I've had of money in from Laura, who said
- 12:25Speaker 4: she's been wanting to buy the Glasson's trench coat for
- 12:28Speaker 4: a while. They're normally ninety nine dollars, and she had
- 12:30Speaker 4: a fifty dollars voucher, but she thought she could do better,
- 12:32Speaker 4: so she waited for a sale. They've just gone on
- 12:35Speaker 4: sale for fifty nine dollars, so she only paid nine bucks.
- 12:38Speaker 4: What and I have that trench coat? Or I bought
- 12:40Speaker 4: a version of that trench coat two years ago, Victorians,
- 12:43Speaker 4: this trenchcoat comes with me everywhere.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, all right, sit down, sit down. I
- 12:47Speaker 2: don't know if it's a running joke. I think it's
- 12:49Speaker 2: just funny. Right if you go to the airport with Jess,
- 12:52Speaker 2: which often we do as a team, So like we'll
- 12:55Speaker 2: be at the airport and there'll be a group of
- 12:57Speaker 2: girls and let's say Jess comes last, will literally go,
- 13:00Speaker 2: all right, who's putting bets in? What's Ess wearing? I
- 13:03Speaker 2: know what Jess is going to wear? And I won
- 13:05Speaker 2: last time because none of them knew that this was
- 13:06Speaker 2: going to be true. I said she's going to turn
- 13:08Speaker 2: up active wear and a trench.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Coat, and everyone was like, why would she be wearing
- 13:13Speaker 5: active wear with a trench coat.
- 13:15Speaker 2: I was like, I don't know, it makes sense to Jess,
- 13:18Speaker 2: So that's what she's going to be wearing. And Brook
- 13:20Speaker 2: was literally like why though, no, it's true. Jess's travel
- 13:24Speaker 2: outfit is active wear with a trench coat because Jess
- 13:26Speaker 2: gets cold on the flight and she can use the
- 13:28Speaker 2: trench coat as a blanket.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Looks kind of cute.
- 13:31Speaker 5: I mean, no one, No one's debating that you didn't
- 13:33Speaker 5: look cute. Like we're not sitting there being like, oh,
- 13:35Speaker 5: what's just going to turn up with? Usually we're going
- 13:37Speaker 5: what's just wearing? Because she looks cute. She's literally a
- 13:40Speaker 5: fashion influencer. I can picture it in my head. I
- 13:43Speaker 5: am picturing a for Dora for some reason.
- 13:44Speaker 7: But no, and then I feel like this is a
- 13:54Speaker 7: different trench coat vibe.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Imagine candy.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Fashion blogger sit down.
- 14:06Speaker 5: Well, I do wann't know about the acting way, but
- 14:08Speaker 5: I don't know that if we're running out of time
- 14:10Speaker 5: on moving up, okay, let's move.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Money win.
- 14:14Speaker 4: Lastly, I've got another points win from Jackie who said
- 14:18Speaker 4: she's wrapped up so many points on the McDonald DApp
- 14:22Speaker 4: that she's being free coffees every day. What do you
- 14:25Speaker 4: know you could get points on the McDonald You.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Can't get points from literally everything.
- 14:29Speaker 4: This is so exciting.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Do you want to start a new podcast? It's she's
- 14:32Speaker 2: on the points? Just talk about points hacking sounds incredible.
- 14:37Speaker 2: I mean it would fly bys if you're listening. Slide
- 14:40Speaker 2: into my DMS right now. Absolutely.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Chat.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Let's move on though, what broke tips you're bringing to
- 14:46Speaker 2: the table this week that aren't stolen?
- 14:49Speaker 5: I always get so nervous. I don't know.
- 14:52Speaker 4: I don't know more than a year.
- 14:55Speaker 5: May I just you know I'm not not an attention seeker.
- 14:58Speaker 5: Will I'll take it?
- 14:59Speaker 2: I'm sorry, not an attention seeker. Hold on, what's your
- 15:05Speaker 2: dream career? Isn't it to be in the limelight? I'm sorry? Yes,
- 15:12Speaker 2: as a stand up comedian, I would know. I don't
- 15:15Speaker 2: think I could do that.
- 15:16Speaker 5: I would like to what you want to do if
- 15:18Speaker 5: the pressure wasn't.
- 15:19Speaker 4: There, you know, if everything that you get on stage
- 15:22Speaker 4: you get. Hey, if I in the audience, I'm gonna
- 15:23Speaker 4: need to turn around and close your eyes.
- 15:26Speaker 5: And don't expect me to be funny, and then maybe
- 15:28Speaker 5: I'll be pleasant.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Let it wash you.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Totally totally right. As somebody who doesn't like the limelight,
- 15:34Speaker 2: let's shine someone you.
- 15:36Speaker 5: Okay, So thank you so much so. The first one
- 15:39Speaker 5: comes from one of our community members. She says that
- 15:42Speaker 5: she has a.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Break tip for me. She's got two young kids.
- 15:44Speaker 5: Buying nappies and formula and supplies like dummies, et cetera
- 15:48Speaker 5: is crazy expensive. So a few weeks ago when money
- 15:50Speaker 5: was tight, they had to get nappies and a few
- 15:52Speaker 5: other things, but could make it work into their weekly
- 15:55Speaker 5: grocery budget. So went to Big w week and get nappies,
- 15:58Speaker 5: bought two of them a few baby thing and got
- 16:00Speaker 5: ten percent off with everyday rewards and paid for the
- 16:04Speaker 5: via after pay. So smart, She's like hacked it for
- 16:07Speaker 5: something she actually needs totally. So I first of all,
- 16:10Speaker 5: I didn't actually know you get teen percent off with
- 16:11Speaker 5: everyday rewards in bigw so because.
- 16:14Speaker 2: It's owned by the same group. Yeah, Like it's incredible.
- 16:16Speaker 5: And also after pay, like smaller expenses things that you
- 16:19Speaker 5: can I mean, I actually have no idea how much
- 16:21Speaker 5: that would have come to ye If you use it wisely,
- 16:23Speaker 5: it can be exactly cash flow it. Thank you.
- 16:27Speaker 2: So I think it's a really really great idea.
- 16:28Speaker 5: So there you go that use your every day rewards
- 16:31Speaker 5: everywhere all the time. Ten percent that's a good money win.
- 16:34Speaker 5: That's really good This next one comes from Bethany.
- 16:37Speaker 2: So this one is one we have.
- 16:39Speaker 5: Do you guys remember when oh, actually v you went here,
- 16:42Speaker 5: but we had that broke not.
- 16:44Speaker 4: Bread chick dads, not the broad chicks, the dad dads,
- 16:49Speaker 4: the two broke dads who.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Are not broke. You were not broke, not even close. No, no, no.
- 16:55Speaker 2: One of them posted online this week that they bought
- 16:57Speaker 2: a two million dollar beach house.
- 17:00Speaker 5: Definitely, well, you know, maybe they couldn't afford the three
- 17:03Speaker 5: mill and that's a real shape.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Yeah, still grade.
- 17:07Speaker 5: So they were talking about how you just like you
- 17:09Speaker 5: don't actually have to use that much laundry urchain.
- 17:11Speaker 2: So basically true.
- 17:13Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's like just coming from a regular person.
- 17:17Speaker 5: But Bethany said that she literally got this advice from
- 17:21Speaker 5: the person installing her washing machine. From the good guys.
- 17:24Speaker 5: They said that you can basically just use one third
- 17:26Speaker 5: or one half of scoop washing powder. But also, white
- 17:29Speaker 5: vinegar is a great fabric softener softener. Why did I
- 17:31Speaker 5: say it like that?
- 17:32Speaker 2: You know what, I love a softener, But that's true.
- 17:35Speaker 2: In fact, I don't even use softener anymore because it
- 17:39Speaker 2: sticks to your clothes and makes them less like able
- 17:42Speaker 2: for them yeah, it's not good for them. I mean
- 17:44Speaker 2: it's like conditioner for your hair. I guess, like try white.
- 17:47Speaker 5: I can't imagine not smelling like a lovely vineagrette after
- 17:51Speaker 5: you've cleaned your clothes, but just give it.
- 17:53Speaker 1: No.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Vinegar doesn't smell after you've instant out. Thankfully, it's good
- 17:57Speaker 2: for cleaning.
- 17:57Speaker 4: The washing machine too, Like washing machines as we run
- 18:00Speaker 4: like a buy cub and then a vinegar load and
- 18:03Speaker 4: it's it.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Gets rid of it. It's a Grade three science project volcano.
- 18:08Speaker 2: I love that.
- 18:09Speaker 5: Well anyway, that's all I've got for this week.
- 18:11Speaker 2: How good? All right, let's go to a really quick
- 18:14Speaker 2: break on the flip side. We're going to be talking
- 18:15Speaker 2: about how you can improve your credit score, and I
- 18:18Speaker 2: can't wait to get to this, but we are going
- 18:20Speaker 2: to be talking about how much it's too much when
- 18:22Speaker 2: it comes to chipping in for work presence, and I
- 18:25Speaker 2: think that Jess is going to get a bit spicy.
- 18:28Speaker 2: We don't do that at she's on the money, but
- 18:30Speaker 2: I feel like she might be triggered by a pastwork place,
- 18:33Speaker 2: so I can't wait to tell you about that.
- 18:34Speaker 5: Beck.
- 18:38Speaker 4: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 18:40Speaker 4: money dilemma.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 18:46Speaker 2: can't solve that She's on the Money Team is here
- 18:48Speaker 2: to help. Every week we tackle your dilemmas, both big
- 18:52Speaker 2: and small, to answer your most burning money, career and
- 18:55Speaker 2: life questions. To get involved, simply head to our website
- 18:58Speaker 2: and leave us a short voice recording and you might
- 19:00Speaker 2: just find yourself on the show. Now, let's take a
- 19:03Speaker 2: listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 19:07Speaker 6: Hihoose on the Money Team. First off, I love your
- 19:10Speaker 6: podcast so much. It has taught me so so much
- 19:14Speaker 6: about finance that I never thought I needed to know,
- 19:16Speaker 6: So thank you for that. And yeah, always very entertaining.
- 19:20Speaker 6: But anyway, I'm hoping you might be able to help
- 19:23Speaker 6: me gain some insight on how to boost my credit score.
- 19:27Speaker 6: I damaged it a little bit when I was being
- 19:29Speaker 6: careless and I just generally didn't really understand what it
- 19:33Speaker 6: all meant. And now I'm in the process of trying
- 19:35Speaker 6: to build it back up. I've cleared my debts, I
- 19:37Speaker 6: don't use my credit card, and I'm not really sure
- 19:40Speaker 6: where to go from here, so any advice would be appreciated.
- 19:44Speaker 6: Thank you so much.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Okay, I feel like, Jess, we've been doing the show
- 19:48Speaker 2: long enough that I'm probably not needed for this. How Jess,
- 19:51Speaker 2: do you improve your credit score?
- 19:53Speaker 4: It's really good because I think a lot of people
- 19:55Speaker 4: get confused thinking Australia's like America and you have to
- 19:58Speaker 4: do all these things and all these credit cards, which
- 19:59Speaker 4: you don't in Australia. It's pretty much the reverse of
- 20:02Speaker 4: how you get a bad credit score. You get a
- 20:03Speaker 4: bad credit score by being not necessarily the most responsible
- 20:07Speaker 4: with your money, or by opening a lot of lines
- 20:09Speaker 4: of credits if you have lots of credit cards open,
- 20:12Speaker 4: or if you have lots of personal loans, or if
- 20:14Speaker 4: you default on payments on bills or default on payments
- 20:17Speaker 4: on fines, like all those kinds of things. So the
- 20:20Speaker 4: reverse of that is basically true to making it better.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Pay your bills on time, if you can close credit cards,
- 20:27Speaker 4: pay down personal loans, reduce all of those things. You know,
- 20:31Speaker 4: your water bills, if you've got fines, pay those. It
- 20:33Speaker 4: can take a little while. But even now I don't
- 20:36Speaker 4: know if it must be my credit card, But every
- 20:38Speaker 4: now and again my credit score takes a point and
- 20:40Speaker 4: I'm like, I don't know how but it did, and I'm.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Just pretty sexy.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Yeah, and I'm just paying everything on time basically.
- 20:46Speaker 2: That's just she's just good at money. Bit, that's her
- 20:48Speaker 2: just bragging to us. Oh my credit score just goes up,
- 20:51Speaker 2: all the ticks up a point.
- 20:55Speaker 5: Just must be minded to actually and this is oh yeah.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Remember saying for those of you playing along at home, Yeah,
- 21:02Speaker 2: maybe haven't gone twelve months back, Like why was your
- 21:05Speaker 2: credit score through the floor.
- 21:06Speaker 5: Well, I was bankrupt when I was like twenty five.
- 21:09Speaker 5: Maybe there was like six seven years ago now, but
- 21:12Speaker 5: coming up.
- 21:12Speaker 2: To seven years that's almost off your finance record, isn't
- 21:15Speaker 2: that exciting?
- 21:15Speaker 5: Yeah, And I honestly I think it was, Like so
- 21:17Speaker 5: I think the max is like seven eight hundred, right, yep,
- 21:20Speaker 5: and then impending.
- 21:21Speaker 2: On who you go through. So there's a few different
- 21:25Speaker 2: companies in Australia. I would say that Equifax is the
- 21:28Speaker 2: biggest one and they go up to twelve hundred. Oh okay, okay.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Experience is experience.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Yeah, so there's a copy. Yeah, So you're not wrong,
- 21:36Speaker 2: it's just there's a lot of.
- 21:37Speaker 5: Different I just I think I'm worried that there's like
- 21:42Speaker 5: I've read it wrong or something, because this doesn't seem right.
- 21:44Speaker 5: But I was on two hundred for so long, two
- 21:46Speaker 5: hundred point, which is very, very low. I couldn't get
- 21:48Speaker 5: any credit, which is obviously totally fine, but I also
- 21:51Speaker 5: couldn't get like a phone plan or anything like that.
- 21:53Speaker 5: I couldn't get utilities, all these things anyway, And then
- 21:56Speaker 5: I jumped up to five hundred, like just this year.
- 21:59Speaker 2: I don't I could have consistency. It's consistency. It's not
- 22:04Speaker 2: being in debt, it's you know, when they do their checks,
- 22:07Speaker 2: it's you're not having further debt. These things play into it.
- 22:11Speaker 2: And I think we as just were saying in this
- 22:13Speaker 2: American mindset of you get a credit card, and if
- 22:16Speaker 2: you are good at your credit card, your credit score
- 22:19Speaker 2: will increase, but that's not really the case here in Australia.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I think that the credit score actually plays into this
- 22:26Speaker 2: bigger picture of what I would call credit worthiness, and
- 22:31Speaker 2: that would be to me, very based on like your
- 22:34Speaker 2: financial health and your history. And because your bankruptcy is
- 22:37Speaker 2: getting further and further into the past, your credit score
- 22:41Speaker 2: is increasing because you haven't stayed there. And I think
- 22:43Speaker 2: that that's really powerful.
- 22:45Speaker 5: Oh that makes sense. Well, I literally just got a
- 22:47Speaker 5: proof of a phone plan the other day and not
- 22:51Speaker 5: being able to do that in that literal years, so
- 22:53Speaker 5: it's so.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Frustrating, Like it was fine.
- 22:55Speaker 5: I was just like, oh, buying phones outright is like
- 22:58Speaker 5: kind of annoying. But if you've got on bankrupt, you
- 23:00Speaker 5: don't have the cash to be buying phones outright, like
- 23:04Speaker 5: I feel like. Don't get me wrong, there's often a
- 23:07Speaker 5: reason why lines of credit aren't extended to people experiencing bankruptcy,
- 23:12Speaker 5: and that's usually because they're not very responsible with them.
- 23:15Speaker 5: But knowing a lot about your story going bankrupt, you
- 23:20Speaker 5: were like, I'm so glad my slate has been wiped clean.
- 23:23Speaker 5: I just want to move on from here.
- 23:24Speaker 2: But then not being able to move on and going cool,
- 23:27Speaker 2: now I'm expected to buy a phone out right instead
- 23:29Speaker 2: of paying like thirty bucks a month or something for
- 23:32Speaker 2: a cheap one, Like that's such a financial burden, Like
- 23:37Speaker 2: that just must be a challenge coming back from it,
- 23:39Speaker 2: and even being able to connect utilities, like be for real,
- 23:43Speaker 2: you need utilities. I'm assuming you then had to rely
- 23:46Speaker 2: on other people to help you out.
- 23:48Speaker 5: I turned away a few times and I had to
- 23:51Speaker 5: get my house made to do it. But what if
- 23:52Speaker 5: I was living by myself, I would just not have electricity?
- 23:54Speaker 5: How do you like, how do you live? But for
- 23:56Speaker 5: our listener, I just know that I'm not too sure
- 24:00Speaker 5: or how far away it was. Our listener kind of
- 24:02Speaker 5: check their credit score and realize it was quite low.
- 24:04Speaker 5: But I remember you saying this to me as well, Vive,
- 24:07Speaker 5: like a year ago, you were like, basically just kind
- 24:09Speaker 5: of wait it out as well.
- 24:11Speaker 2: It's like it's happening.
- 24:12Speaker 5: Now it's actually happening, and it does actually happen, and
- 24:15Speaker 5: Es just does nothing at her, nothing bad. That's why
- 24:19Speaker 5: it goes up.
- 24:21Speaker 2: I mean, if you're wondering about your credit score, you
- 24:24Speaker 2: can go through a number of different platforms to get
- 24:27Speaker 2: a credit score check for free. Experience Equifax and ily
- 24:31Speaker 2: On three of the biggest ones here in Australia. And
- 24:34Speaker 2: I would recommend doing that once every twelve months, to
- 24:37Speaker 2: do just like your financial health check and make sure
- 24:40Speaker 2: that it is what it's meant to be. Because I
- 24:44Speaker 2: hate to say this, I feel like we're talking more
- 24:46Speaker 2: and more about like scams and people having their data
- 24:50Speaker 2: stolen and people having their credit card information stolen.
- 24:53Speaker 4: What oh just reminded me of a story I have
- 24:55Speaker 4: to tell you. Sorry, we don't have to go through
- 25:01Speaker 4: this on air time.
- 25:02Speaker 2: No, no, no, this is now on air.
- 25:04Speaker 6: Sorry.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Your deep hop got hacked. In what someone was starting
- 25:06Speaker 2: to upload clothes and sell them as you.
- 25:09Speaker 4: So it's so bizarre. So I woke up one morning
- 25:12Speaker 4: and I had a heap of like notifications on my
- 25:14Speaker 4: friend from deepop, and I was like, oh, slay me.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Maybe I'm selling heaps of stuff. This is great. Anyway,
- 25:19Speaker 4: I had like fifty messages and I opened them up
- 25:23Speaker 4: and the top one was from deepop saying we've frozen
- 25:25Speaker 4: your account because of like activities that yeah, so that
- 25:28Speaker 4: I'm trying to log in trying to figure it out. Thanks, guys,
- 25:30Speaker 4: had to do a hard reset on like the password,
- 25:33Speaker 4: like all this stuff. Anyway, I get in, someone has
- 25:35Speaker 4: hacked my thing and has messaged like seventy five people
- 25:39Speaker 4: inquiring about their items, saying, hey, I can't see the
- 25:43Speaker 4: photos of this item, can you text them to this
- 25:46Speaker 4: WhatsApp number. So then these people were texting the WhatsApp
- 25:49Speaker 4: number and the person was attempting to scam them via
- 25:52Speaker 4: And this person must have lived overseas because this all
- 25:54Speaker 4: happened while I was asleep overnight. So then I was
- 25:58Speaker 4: such pain because I obviously changed my account, checked my PayPal.
- 26:02Speaker 4: Thankfully everything was FINECI.
- 26:04Speaker 2: This scam mute.
- 26:05Speaker 4: Literally I was like, my good name, I have like
- 26:07Speaker 4: a five star writing I've sold like two hundred items,
- 26:11Speaker 4: not today's selsation.
- 26:12Speaker 2: It's based on her credit score, ban completely.
- 26:14Speaker 4: And so I literally then had to copy paste a
- 26:16Speaker 4: message to seventy five people because I.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Think that's so kind.
- 26:19Speaker 4: Well, because I was worried, like some people had replied
- 26:21Speaker 4: and said yeah, no worries like I've sent you with her,
- 26:23Speaker 4: I was like, shit, like what if this person like
- 26:25Speaker 4: gets them? So then I messaged every single person saying
- 26:28Speaker 4: I'm so sorry, this was not me, my account was hacked.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Please don't reply to the messages.
- 26:31Speaker 5: But that's a good learning because lots of our community
- 26:34Speaker 5: use deepop. If anyone asks you to send photos to WhatsApp,
- 26:38Speaker 5: don't don't do it.
- 26:39Speaker 4: And it just like it was one of those things
- 26:41Speaker 4: like I have two factor authentication on like my bank
- 26:44Speaker 4: and my PayPal, but like everything, I'd never even thought
- 26:49Speaker 4: about it, and so yeah, just a reminder put two
- 26:50Speaker 4: factors down.
- 26:52Speaker 2: But that's exactly why we need to be checking our
- 26:54Speaker 2: credit score every year totally because even MISSTERCI can get hacked. Yeah,
- 26:59Speaker 2: and fortunately, the first time some people find out that
- 27:04Speaker 2: their details have been leaked is because they see something
- 27:06Speaker 2: suspicious on their credit score and go, hold on, I
- 27:09Speaker 2: don't have a line of credit with bank ABC.
- 27:12Speaker 5: I didn't you get an after pay. I didn't do
- 27:15Speaker 5: these things. And then you can.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Inquire and nip it in the bud instead of getting
- 27:20Speaker 2: years down the track and it being messy and hard
- 27:22Speaker 2: and whoever stole the money has gone a well, Like,
- 27:25Speaker 2: it's really important to be on top of it, and
- 27:27Speaker 2: I feel like that should be a part of your
- 27:28Speaker 2: annual financial health check. And then, as Jess was saying,
- 27:31Speaker 2: just pay your bills and your rent on time, make
- 27:34Speaker 2: sure that if you've got loans and credit cards they're
- 27:36Speaker 2: being paid off. And then even limit how many applications
- 27:40Speaker 2: you're making, so every single time and application is added
- 27:44Speaker 2: to your file, it temporarily lowers your credit score. And
- 27:48Speaker 2: I think that lots of people go, oh, but I
- 27:50Speaker 2: was just thinking about getting a loan. I didn't get
- 27:52Speaker 2: the loan. Yeah, why has my credit score gone down?
- 27:55Speaker 2: It's like, well, I know you thought you were doing
- 27:57Speaker 2: your research, but you submitted in quiries with five different banks,
- 28:02Speaker 2: and that's now negatively impacted you. And this is another
- 28:05Speaker 2: reason why I think it's so important that if you're
- 28:07Speaker 2: in that home buying process, you're working with one mortgage
- 28:11Speaker 2: broker to make sure you're not you shopping around with
- 28:13Speaker 2: different banks, because they'll all run a credit check on
- 28:16Speaker 2: your behalf and then it ultimately impacts your credit score,
- 28:20Speaker 2: and then when you finally find the bank that you
- 28:21Speaker 2: want to go with, you've got a lower credit score
- 28:24Speaker 2: and therefore you're not as an attractive person. Did it.
- 28:28Speaker 4: Actually, there's two inquiries on my credit score from two
- 28:32Speaker 4: of the previous brokers I spoke to you before coming Azala,
- 28:35Speaker 4: and then Zala hasn't had to do any inquiries for
- 28:37Speaker 4: me because they just run all.
- 28:37Speaker 2: The doing it all in the background.
- 28:39Speaker 4: Yes, correct.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Do you know how much that frustrates me? Yeah, because
- 28:43Speaker 2: I'm not saying it's lazy, because you're broker at the
- 28:46Speaker 2: end of the day, to get the loan done needs
- 28:49Speaker 2: to do it all officially and go through those channels
- 28:51Speaker 2: and do a credit check. But everything unless you're ready
- 28:56Speaker 2: to buy, everything can be done in the background and
- 28:58Speaker 2: be done properly to make sure that we're not impacting
- 29:01Speaker 2: you negatively. Like anyway, that's a conversation for another day.
- 29:05Speaker 2: And then another way to build up your credit score
- 29:08Speaker 2: is to just have cash coming in consistently. So cash
- 29:11Speaker 2: coming into your bank account. It's obviously going to give
- 29:13Speaker 2: you a savings buffer to make sure that you can
- 29:15Speaker 2: pay your bills on time and you're not going into debt,
- 29:18Speaker 2: but it's also a really good way over time to
- 29:21Speaker 2: show that you're a good credit risk when applying for
- 29:24Speaker 2: a credit card or a bank loan, or in the
- 29:25Speaker 2: future for a home loan. And obviously everyone's different, but
- 29:29Speaker 2: in Australia it is not about lines of credit and
- 29:33Speaker 2: maintaining them. It's about just doing the basics.
- 29:36Speaker 4: Well and lower your credit card minimum if you can. Yeah,
- 29:40Speaker 4: that happened to me. When I applied for my card.
- 29:43Speaker 4: They're like, he's ten thousand dollars and I was like much, Yeah,
- 29:46Speaker 4: and I dropped it to the minimum, which is like
- 29:48Speaker 4: maybe two or three thousand, and even that like reducing
- 29:51Speaker 4: the amount of credit that I could have access.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, credit score.
- 29:56Speaker 5: I just have one question, Oh, you can have as
- 29:58Speaker 5: many as you want as someone who couldn't. Actually this
- 30:00Speaker 5: sounds weird, but I couldn't have bills in my name. Yeah,
- 30:04Speaker 5: so I didn't have bills. I did have bills obviously,
- 30:06Speaker 5: but they weren't in my name. So does that just
- 30:09Speaker 5: require like I didn't have a phone line, I didn't
- 30:11Speaker 5: have electricity, any utilities, and nothing was in my name.
- 30:14Speaker 5: I could actually.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Don't go into further debt. Don't go into further debt. Yeah,
- 30:17Speaker 2: and it's about remember how like twelve months ago, I
- 30:20Speaker 2: was like, yeah, Beck, sit and wait, give it time.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Your credit score is I promise going to improve as
- 30:26Speaker 2: long as there aren't lots of inquiries, as long as
- 30:29Speaker 2: you aren't going into further debt, you aren't taking out
- 30:31Speaker 2: lines of credit, Beck, what happened?
- 30:33Speaker 5: They did shoot up?
- 30:34Speaker 2: Yeah, they go, but it takes time.
- 30:37Speaker 5: So it's about, you know, consistently saving and putting yourself
- 30:40Speaker 5: in a place where you aren't going.
- 30:42Speaker 2: To not be able to pay your bill. Like you're
- 30:44Speaker 2: just making sure that your financial house is super secure.
- 30:47Speaker 2: And when you're in that stitch, you're better off and
- 30:49Speaker 2: your credit score is going to increase. But that's not
- 30:51Speaker 2: the same as America. So if you're one of our
- 30:53Speaker 2: American listeners, I'm really sorry, but if you're one of
- 30:55Speaker 2: our Australian listeners, stop looking at American content.
- 30:59Speaker 4: All right, should get into the juice.
- 31:01Speaker 2: I'm ready, I'm ready. I'm so excited because I feel
- 31:04Speaker 2: like Jess has some trauma from shared gifts. Are you ready?
- 31:09Speaker 4: Ready?
- 31:09Speaker 5: Ready?
- 31:09Speaker 2: Okay?
- 31:10Speaker 5: So this week we got a DM sounded exactly like this,
- 31:13Speaker 5: because I'm just going to read it out for you.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Hi, V and team. I need some advice. A little
- 31:18Speaker 2: while back and email went around at work asking for
- 31:20Speaker 2: fifty bucks for a present for the CEO. He's always
- 31:24Speaker 2: doing thoughtful things for the employees, and it was a
- 31:26Speaker 2: gift I knew, kid love, so I chipped in without
- 31:29Speaker 2: thinking twice. Now another email has come around asking for
- 31:33Speaker 2: fifty dollars for a different staff member. Honestly, that seems
- 31:36Speaker 2: like a crazy amount to ask for co workers for
- 31:39Speaker 2: staff birthdays. I mean, this is about a quarter of
- 31:42Speaker 2: my family's grocery budget for the week. Is this amount
- 31:45Speaker 2: unreasonable or is it just what's expected these days? And
- 31:49Speaker 2: how do I bring it up without looking cheap? I
- 31:53Speaker 2: hate it so much.
- 31:55Speaker 5: At fifty dollars be for real, so much that a
- 31:58Speaker 5: lot lot of body.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Like for me. Sorry, straight out the gate usually let
- 32:03Speaker 2: you guys have your opinions first. No, No, fifty bucks,
- 32:07Speaker 2: Like that's in our friendship group when we're doing group presents,
- 32:11Speaker 2: that's the amount that we all chip in for, like, oh,
- 32:14Speaker 2: it's your thirtieth.
- 32:15Speaker 5: Thirtieth a big one.
- 32:17Speaker 4: Yeah, like a good friend, A good friend, not a co.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Word do I allocate for like my mum at Christmas?
- 32:26Speaker 4: And not a CEO?
- 32:27Speaker 5: Maybe because they're probably making a lot of money, but also.
- 32:31Speaker 4: For the CEO.
- 32:32Speaker 2: But I can see why this person first cab off
- 32:35Speaker 2: the rank was like, oh, it's for the CEO. That's
- 32:38Speaker 2: somebody high up that I feel gives me a lot
- 32:42Speaker 2: of value and probably doesn't get this back in exchange
- 32:45Speaker 2: very often. And I really like this idea, Like I'm
- 32:49Speaker 2: assuming that was maybe like a once off, like Hey, Jess,
- 32:52Speaker 2: I'd love to organize something for Beck because she does
- 32:54Speaker 2: so much for us, not a Hey Jess, Beck's birthday
- 32:57Speaker 2: is coming out. Are you gonna chip in fifty bucks?
- 32:59Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 33:00Speaker 5: Yeah, what Yeah, that's a lot.
- 33:02Speaker 4: It just makes me wonder how many people are in
- 33:04Speaker 4: this company because this was my past experience. I worked
- 33:07Speaker 4: at a big corporate before coming here. Also, i'd corporate Yeah,
- 33:11Speaker 4: it was a very large team, and so it was
- 33:16Speaker 4: very common practice for everyone to put in money for everyone.
- 33:19Speaker 4: And respectfully this company, I didn't really like anybody, like
- 33:24Speaker 4: they were my coworkers. I was polite to them, they
- 33:26Speaker 4: were polite to me. I wouldn't be caught dead hanging
- 33:29Speaker 4: out with them outside of work, and that is like
- 33:31Speaker 4: that normalized that. But like you don't have to be
- 33:35Speaker 4: besties with everybody that you work with, and that's so fine,
- 33:37Speaker 4: weird but okay, very different in small business, very different.
- 33:41Speaker 5: But even in small business, you don't have to be
- 33:44Speaker 5: besties totally.
- 33:45Speaker 4: And so I think it was the expectation at what
- 33:48Speaker 4: it was. You know, this month x y ZX birthday,
- 33:50Speaker 4: every like basically like money tin going around. Everyone chucked
- 33:52Speaker 4: money in and I was like, why am I spending
- 33:54Speaker 4: money on these people that I don't like? Like it
- 33:57Speaker 4: just is very uncomfortable. I also at the time was earning,
- 34:01Speaker 4: like from my perspective, a very low amount, and I
- 34:04Speaker 4: was one of the roles that would have been the
- 34:05Speaker 4: lowest paid.
- 34:06Speaker 2: With it was that also when you were in debt.
- 34:09Speaker 4: I was in debt.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, I'm sorry you don't have that cash to splash, No.
- 34:14Speaker 4: And it was it just felt I was like, why
- 34:17Speaker 4: am I paying for your gift when I don't like you,
- 34:21Speaker 4: I don't know you, I don't really talk to you.
- 34:23Speaker 2: I didn't even get an invite to your birthday party. Literally,
- 34:26Speaker 2: It's a bit different if they'd invited you to their
- 34:29Speaker 2: birthday on a Saturday night and you turned up and
- 34:31Speaker 2: you were like, oh, I got them a gift even
- 34:33Speaker 2: then to fifty dollars. I'm not spending fifty dollars on
- 34:35Speaker 2: a coworker's birthday present at their party.
- 34:38Speaker 4: Now, like very different in like this environment, Like gift
- 34:42Speaker 4: giving is one of my love languages.
- 34:43Speaker 2: I love it also mine, yes, and I.
- 34:45Speaker 4: Do love to give gifts, and I think you can
- 34:47Speaker 4: give thoughtful gifts that don't cost a lot of money,
- 34:50Speaker 4: and I like, I like doing that. But I think
- 34:52Speaker 4: in that situation, it was just the fact that it
- 34:54Speaker 4: was expected of everybody and the fact that it was
- 34:57Speaker 4: organized like this person like through it sounds like someone
- 35:01Speaker 4: hire out.
- 35:01Speaker 5: They're probably also going to get a last minute card
- 35:05Speaker 5: it costs like fourteen ninety five totally at the news
- 35:08Speaker 5: agency and then make all of you just sign it.
- 35:10Speaker 4: Yeah, pil I was just like, why isn't this company
- 35:14Speaker 4: that I'm making millions of dollars for buying this person
- 35:18Speaker 4: the gift and saying happy birthday from all of us.
- 35:20Speaker 2: But even if that happens, like you're saying, it's a
- 35:23Speaker 2: big company, right, yeah, we don't have a big company.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Our sheet's on the money. But let's pretend it's one
- 35:28Speaker 2: a month. That's only twelve people in the business.
- 35:30Speaker 5: That's six hundred dollars a year that you're expected to
- 35:33Speaker 5: pray to your budget for birthday presents for your co workers.
- 35:38Speaker 2: No, and some people don't even have that amount. Like
- 35:42Speaker 2: we know if we look at the maths in an emergency,
- 35:44Speaker 2: we know that most Australians don't have access to five
- 35:47Speaker 2: hundred dollars. Yet you're asking me to spend more than
- 35:51Speaker 2: that on coworkers' presence, not friends, not family members, not
- 35:57Speaker 2: your dog, somebody that you wouldn't even invite over to
- 36:01Speaker 2: meet your dog. Yeah, yeah, no.
- 36:03Speaker 4: And it's just like, if I think about it in
- 36:05Speaker 4: the context of our team, even as we all do
- 36:08Speaker 4: like to get each other gifts or whatever, not one
- 36:11Speaker 4: person would be offended if someone didn't give you a gift.
- 36:14Speaker 2: I don't think anyone in our team would ask to
- 36:16Speaker 2: do group gifts either. I do often do quote a
- 36:20Speaker 2: group gift where I purchase something from the team for
- 36:25Speaker 2: that person for their birthday or whatnot, but that comes
- 36:28Speaker 2: from the team, from my work budget, and everybody's name
- 36:33Speaker 2: goes on it, and maybe there was a conversation about it.
- 36:35Speaker 4: I E.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Beck, it's birthday month for you, so we bought you
- 36:39Speaker 2: flowers from everyone, but that was paid for by She's
- 36:42Speaker 2: on the money, because I don't want the rest of
- 36:44Speaker 2: the team paying for that. But like I'd been like, Hey,
- 36:47Speaker 2: what do you think Beck would want? And we have
- 36:49Speaker 2: this nice conversation about it, and as a team we
- 36:52Speaker 2: organize it, but as a team we don't pay for
- 36:54Speaker 2: it because I just like I.
- 36:56Speaker 4: Do's a coworker that's new or that you don't talk to.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Or so you don't I don't know. I've spoken about
- 37:01Speaker 2: this before, but when I was up to my eyeballs
- 37:04Speaker 2: in debt, I lied about it because I was embarrassed
- 37:07Speaker 2: of the situation I was in and I didn't want
- 37:10Speaker 2: my coworkers, who I thought were fancy pants is knowing
- 37:15Speaker 2: that I was in debt, because I felt like that
- 37:17Speaker 2: was a reflection And it is absolutely not, but I
- 37:20Speaker 2: thought that was a reflection of my self worth. I
- 37:22Speaker 2: did not want to put that on the table and
- 37:23Speaker 2: be like, hey, so actually I have eight hundred and
- 37:26Speaker 2: eighty three dollars a month that I pay to my
- 37:28Speaker 2: personal debt, and like, to be honest, fifty bucks is
- 37:30Speaker 2: a bit march. I think I would have just scraped
- 37:32Speaker 2: to find the money and been like, yeah, here, haha,
- 37:35Speaker 2: happy birthday, and then stressed about it next time I
- 37:38Speaker 2: saw that person coming down the hallway because oh my god,
- 37:40Speaker 2: God forbid she asks me for another present, Like, and
- 37:43Speaker 2: I'm not saying that lying is correct, but we're just
- 37:46Speaker 2: being honest. I didn't want to share that about me
- 37:48Speaker 2: at that point in time. Now it's very much a
- 37:50Speaker 2: part of who I am, but it is a very
- 37:52Speaker 2: good example of why you never know what someone's going through,
- 37:55Speaker 2: and I feel like that's, especially in this economy, an
- 37:58Speaker 2: unrealistic expectation.
- 38:00Speaker 5: I wonder if any other staff members said anything about
- 38:03Speaker 5: it that was like going to go along with any
- 38:04Speaker 5: Oh my god, I would really like to know sometimes
- 38:06Speaker 5: I want to like reply to these damsers, girl, what
- 38:09Speaker 5: company do you work for?
- 38:10Speaker 2: What's going on? So we asked, obviously for your two cents.
- 38:14Speaker 2: First question we asked was what is a reasonable amount
- 38:17Speaker 2: to be asked to chip in for coworker presents? Ninety
- 38:21Speaker 2: six percent of you said up to twenty bucks, three
- 38:25Speaker 2: percent of you said thirty to forty dollars, and zero
- 38:29Speaker 2: percent of you said fifty dollars or more completely agree
- 38:32Speaker 2: that is so validating, like we ain't wrong here. I
- 38:36Speaker 2: like this. Usually there's in the group like often I'll
- 38:40Speaker 2: hangback because I go, oh, Jess, might I have a
- 38:42Speaker 2: different opinion to Beck? And then I'm interested to know
- 38:44Speaker 2: what my opinion is. In contrast, no, we're all like
- 38:48Speaker 2: hell no, no, why all right? Next question we asked
- 38:52Speaker 2: was would you speak up if you thought the amount
- 38:55Speaker 2: was unreasonable? Fifty nine percent of you said yeah, that's
- 38:59Speaker 2: really important, nine percent of you said no, I just
- 39:02Speaker 2: go along with it, and then thirty two percent said
- 39:05Speaker 2: only if others agreed. And I think that this goes
- 39:07Speaker 2: back to what I was talking about before, Like you
- 39:10Speaker 2: guys said yeah, I would speak up about it, but
- 39:13Speaker 2: that's only sixty percent of you. Thirty two percent are
- 39:16Speaker 2: only going to do it if someone else agrees with you.
- 39:18Speaker 2: And then basically ten percent of you were like, no,
- 39:21Speaker 2: like I just smile and nod and agree to it. Yes,
- 39:25Speaker 2: And if there's somebody every month, going back to our
- 39:27Speaker 2: example of if you're spending fifty bucks a month, that's
- 39:29Speaker 2: six hundred dollars a year, but once a year or
- 39:33Speaker 2: one person in that group is asked every single month
- 39:36Speaker 2: for fifty bucks and they don't want to, but they're
- 39:38Speaker 2: just going along with it.
- 39:39Speaker 5: GI's me the it, and there's probably so many other
- 39:42Speaker 5: people thinking the exactly thing, but no one's saying it.
- 39:44Speaker 6: First.
- 39:45Speaker 4: Someone's got to be brave and be like this is
- 39:47Speaker 4: too much, and then everyone else will rally.
- 39:51Speaker 2: And I think it's interesting as well, because if you
- 39:53Speaker 2: have a good team culture. And I'm not saying that
- 39:56Speaker 2: companies with good team culture will be best is but
- 40:00Speaker 2: I see it in my team, like we organize our
- 40:03Speaker 2: team gift. But I know Jess goes and sends the
- 40:06Speaker 2: rest of the team members like flowers and stuff because
- 40:08Speaker 2: I see posted on Instagram. Brook will be like happy
- 40:10Speaker 2: birthday to me, Jess sent me these gorgeous flowers. That's
- 40:13Speaker 2: got nothing to do with work Like that is not
- 40:18Speaker 2: Jess asking other people to pitch in. I know she's
- 40:20Speaker 2: probably spending fifty bus because my girl like, flowers are expensive,
- 40:24Speaker 2: but that was a choice that she got to make,
- 40:26Speaker 2: not one that she felt forced to make. And I
- 40:28Speaker 2: think that's an important Like we're not saying don't buy
- 40:30Speaker 2: a coworker's flowers, don't buy a coworker's presence, if that's
- 40:33Speaker 2: what aligns with your values. We're saying, don't bully other
- 40:37Speaker 2: people into joining you.
- 40:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Completely, So we did say, all right, give us your
- 40:42Speaker 2: two cents. What do you think about this? One person said,
- 40:45Speaker 2: I like this. We actually have a clause in our
- 40:48Speaker 2: union social club that if someone's a member, they actually
- 40:51Speaker 2: get a fixed price present.
- 40:54Speaker 5: So if you won't from like the team, I'm assuming
- 40:57Speaker 5: in social club they get a present.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Some of the budget of social club goes towards that.
- 41:02Speaker 4: Oh I like that. I don't like that.
- 41:05Speaker 2: I don't I don't want to sign up to get
- 41:07Speaker 2: a present. Oh so it's only in the social club, Okay,
- 41:13Speaker 2: you if you remember. I don't know how I feel
- 41:15Speaker 2: about that.
- 41:16Speaker 4: I thought it was like, oh, we have like social
- 41:19Speaker 4: club gets a thousand dollars a year to spend on
- 41:22Speaker 4: social things, and some of that budget.
- 41:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I want my budget to go to the social
- 41:26Speaker 5: club things, not to a present.
- 41:28Speaker 4: Oh, get to a shit gift? You know what I mean?
- 41:33Speaker 4: If I didn't know a coworker, well, like in big corporate.
- 41:35Speaker 4: If I think about going back to that where I
- 41:37Speaker 4: was putting money for people, obviously someone's making the decision
- 41:40Speaker 4: of watch to buy them. If you ask me what
- 41:41Speaker 4: any single one of those people would have liked, couldn'taya like?
- 41:45Speaker 2: Do you know what is a good present?
- 41:46Speaker 5: Like if there are any social clubs listening and they're like, wow,
- 41:49Speaker 5: we need a budget friendly gift, go buy shees on
- 41:52Speaker 5: the money from kmart fifteen bucks?
- 41:55Speaker 2: What a present?
- 41:56Speaker 4: True?
- 41:57Speaker 2: Good present?
- 41:57Speaker 4: All right?
- 41:58Speaker 2: So back to this I'm giving. You can read it,
- 42:01Speaker 2: give it to your friend, you could put it on
- 42:03Speaker 2: your bedstand. Very aesthetic fish exactly all right. So someone
- 42:08Speaker 2: else said, I really agree. Often they're asking for more
- 42:12Speaker 2: than what we budget for family and friends gifts.
- 42:15Speaker 4: That's crazy.
- 42:17Speaker 5: Someone else said, whatever happened to the corporate cake and candles?
- 42:20Speaker 4: Totally?
- 42:22Speaker 5: I love a cake and candle?
- 42:23Speaker 2: No, but like, isn't work meant to organize that? And
- 42:26Speaker 2: we like go into the work staff room and we
- 42:30Speaker 2: waste some time having some cake, singing a song. We
- 42:33Speaker 2: go back to our death wham bam, thank you, ma'am.
- 42:36Speaker 2: That is what a birthday at work should look like.
- 42:39Speaker 6: True.
- 42:39Speaker 5: I'm like, no, I'm listening to these and I'm like,
- 42:41Speaker 5: it is anyone in control in any of these places.
- 42:43Speaker 5: Like if I was a boss of a place, no
- 42:46Speaker 5: one would ever have to think about gifts. Because this
- 42:48Speaker 5: is my favorite part about being the boss. Yeah, I
- 42:51Speaker 5: get to make the Yeah, I mean within with reason,
- 42:55Speaker 5: within reason, and like regulation, you know, legislation, but I
- 43:00Speaker 5: think you do get to sometimes make the rules. You
- 43:02Speaker 5: do have to pay payroll though, so like i'd prefer
- 43:05Speaker 5: to buy you a fifty dollars gift, sometimes someone else said,
- 43:09Speaker 5: just speak up and state your donation to the gift.
- 43:12Speaker 5: You don't need to justify reasons as to the amount
- 43:14Speaker 5: at all. It's true, yes, very true.
- 43:17Speaker 2: But I also feel like social pressure plays into this.
- 43:20Speaker 4: Easy said than done.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's a really good idea. That's a very
- 43:24Speaker 2: smart thing. Jess. What if you felt comfortable in your
- 43:27Speaker 2: corporate stitch to do that, baby.
- 43:28Speaker 4: Jess, definitely not just now.
- 43:30Speaker 5: I'd be a social prole.
- 43:31Speaker 4: I'd be telling them where to take that gift. But
- 43:33Speaker 4: like back then, no way.
- 43:36Speaker 2: Do you think if that's the case, right, So just
- 43:39Speaker 2: zooming a bit out, wasting some more pod time. If
- 43:42Speaker 2: we know that there are twelve members in the team,
- 43:46Speaker 2: and everyone chips in fifty dollars a month, it's just
- 43:49Speaker 2: the thing that that company does, six hundred bucks. Can
- 43:53Speaker 2: I ask for an air rap? It's true? Can I
- 43:55Speaker 2: ask for something that I really want as my gift
- 43:59Speaker 2: so that I get what I want give? And I've
- 44:01Speaker 2: been spending fifty bucks a month on other people.
- 44:04Speaker 5: I did not even think about that. So that means that, Yeah,
- 44:06Speaker 5: if every month, twelve of you are putting in fifty
- 44:09Speaker 5: dollars for a gift, that means that you, as an employee, imagine,
- 44:13Speaker 5: since anyone's going to become your month, six hundred dollars
- 44:16Speaker 5: gift is absolutely excessive. I don't think that's necessary.
- 44:22Speaker 2: I don't think that's necessary.
- 44:23Speaker 5: But also this is how pyramid schemes were, right, true,
- 44:26Speaker 5: So give to Jen and Jen, or give to Jess
- 44:29Speaker 5: and Jess, We'll give to Beck.
- 44:30Speaker 2: Just goes around. Yes, we're starting a pyramid scheme, but
- 44:34Speaker 2: it's birthdays.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:36Speaker 4: The thought that I had before, if everyone's putting in
- 44:38Speaker 4: the same amount for everyone every month, every year, why
- 44:41Speaker 4: not just have no one do it, and financially you're
- 44:43Speaker 4: in the no. But you're in the exact same spot.
- 44:45Speaker 4: Like I've spent six hundred dollars and eventually on my
- 44:47Speaker 4: birthday I will receive a six hundred dollars gift back
- 44:50Speaker 4: or none of us could spend any money. And if
- 44:53Speaker 4: I want something that costs six hundred dollars, I could
- 44:55Speaker 4: just buy it myself. Yes, and same with no.
- 44:59Speaker 2: I think it's worse off jest because you're saying, no
- 45:03Speaker 2: one said that I got to pick what my gift is. Yeah,
- 45:06Speaker 2: maybe I want said I'm getting something I want.
- 45:08Speaker 4: Here an ugly ass six hundred dollars leather laptop cover. Yeah,
- 45:13Speaker 4: I mean my.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Work, Yes, absolutely not, absolutely not. I like this one.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Someone wrote in and said in the UK, the birthday
- 45:21Speaker 2: person has to bring the treats, and I think that's
- 45:24Speaker 2: more fair. Yeah.
- 45:25Speaker 5: I like that I do that on my birthday. It's
- 45:28Speaker 5: probably a nice thing to do.
- 45:29Speaker 2: That's a good deal. I think if it's your birthday
- 45:32Speaker 2: and you want to celebrate it, that's on you. You
- 45:34Speaker 2: celebrate lolleybags in primary school. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
- 45:37Speaker 5: If someone else said, and I feel like this is relatable,
- 45:39Speaker 5: it's really hard when everyone else is and you're.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Left feeling like the tight one. Yeah. Someone else said,
- 45:46Speaker 2: my workplace has a gift fund as an opt in
- 45:48Speaker 2: for the team twenty dollars contribution for the entire financial year.
- 45:53Speaker 5: It's pressure, though, because if you're like I don't want
- 45:55Speaker 5: to opt in, then people people just not get you
- 45:58Speaker 5: a present. You know, it's pressure. I don't like this
- 46:00Speaker 5: pressure of the whole thing.
- 46:01Speaker 2: On the flip side, I feel like this is us coded.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Someone said I'd be mortified if I knew people paying
- 46:05Speaker 2: fifty bucks for something I may not even want.
- 46:08Speaker 4: Yeah. Completely.
- 46:10Speaker 5: Someone said I believe that gifts for staff for things
- 46:12Speaker 5: that the company itself should be covering.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Amen. And someone said salaries vary so much. In our
- 46:18Speaker 2: team only ever asked to chip in what we feel.
- 46:22Speaker 2: I still don't think you should be asked to chip in,
- 46:23Speaker 2: But that's.
- 46:25Speaker 4: I think if you're slaving away for a company earning
- 46:27Speaker 4: the money, the least they can do is if they
- 46:28Speaker 4: want to buy a birthday gift, they pay for it.
- 46:30Speaker 2: But also, baby Jess, you just said I was earning
- 46:32Speaker 2: what I would say is a low amount, and I
- 46:34Speaker 2: mean as an entry level role, probably you were expected
- 46:38Speaker 2: to chip in the same amount as your boss, and
- 46:41Speaker 2: we did.
- 46:42Speaker 4: True, it was like a lot of money to me.
- 46:46Speaker 2: We dig into this, the more frustrated I'm getty. Yeah,
- 46:48Speaker 2: I don't like it. I think we should end the conversation.
- 46:51Speaker 2: And I think we're done. We've done any Let's go meditate.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Let's go still some more donuts from reception because our
- 46:57Speaker 2: workplace gives us free snacks.
- 47:00Speaker 4: Look at that, and we didn't even have to put
- 47:01Speaker 4: in for it.
- 47:02Speaker 2: I won't be thanks though. Anyway. All right, have a
- 47:05Speaker 2: good week guys. I'll see you right nearly tomorrow. I've
- 47:08Speaker 2: got another Saturday special coming for you, and then another
- 47:11Speaker 2: bright and early one on Monday for a money Darius.
- 47:14Speaker 2: So guys, have the best weekend and don't put in
- 47:17Speaker 2: for group gifts.
