- 0:01When was the last time you did something that had absolutely no
- 0:04point to it? Not for your kids, not for your
- 0:07house, just a thing you did because it was fun and that was
- 0:10the whole reason. If you're sitting there trying
- 0:13to come up with a reason and you can't, that's why we're doing
- 0:17this episode. I was having coffee with a
- 0:20friend a few weeks ago, somebody I'd only met recently.
- 0:23And we got into it right away, talking about all the work we're
- 0:26constantly doing in ourselves, healing this, working through
- 0:29that, trying to be better mothers and better wives and
- 0:31better people. And somewhere in there she said
- 0:34something about how many rigid adults are there.
- 0:37And I said 100%, because at some point you have to be able to let
- 0:44loose a little, be carefree. Sometimes you have to keep that
- 0:47childlike part of you without being childish.
- 0:50Those are two different things. And I want to be clear about
- 0:53that upfront because I'm not talking about walking away from
- 0:56your responsibilities to go off and find yourself while
- 1:00everybody else picks up your slack.
- 1:02That's not what I'm asking you to do.
- 1:05Then she said, how many adults do you think still play?
- 1:09And I said, I don't think they play.
- 1:12And I bet money that it's their nervous systems, because
- 1:14something taught them young that play was a problem and they
- 1:18never unlearned it. She and I kept talking, and the
- 1:23more she talked I realized maybe I should make an episode out of
- 1:26it. I kept thinking about it because
- 1:29I used to play. I know what it feels like.
- 1:32I played a lot as a kid. I was in fantasyland half the
- 1:36time. And I know some of you right now
- 1:38are thinking and listening to this saying.
- 1:40I was never a playful kid. That was never me.
- 1:43This doesn't apply to me, but it does.
- 1:46If you weren't playing, something was in the way, and
- 1:49that's the same conversation. But I was playing and I can tell
- 1:54you exactly what it looked like and exactly what happened to it.
- 1:58I loved Barbies, and I'd go find my mom and ask her to play with
- 2:02me. She was always too busy.
- 2:04There was always something from the office she had to work on,
- 2:08and at some point I stopped asking.
- 2:10So I played by myself. Our house had an attic that ran
- 2:14across the whole length of my room, and I built a Barbie city
- 2:17there. Barbie had friends, she got
- 2:19married, she had kids. They were entire lives happening
- 2:23in that attic. And I'd be up there for hours.
- 2:26Nobody needed anything for me. Nobody was watching.
- 2:29And those are the best memories of my childhood.
- 2:33And I spent it alone. And I swore I would never do
- 2:37that to my kids. And here we are.
- 2:39Because I hate playing. The difference is I don't say
- 2:42I'm too busy. That's not my sentence.
- 2:44My sentence is I'm too tired. Which I really am.
- 2:48But that sounds so much better coming out of my mouth.
- 2:51And it lands on my children exactly the same way it landed
- 2:54on me. Same thing, different word.
- 2:58But here's the thing. I don't think a woman wakes up 1
- 3:02morning and decides she's done having fun.
- 3:05I think you get taught over and over that the excited version of
- 3:09you is not welcome in the room, and eventually you stop bringing
- 3:12her. Here's what I didn't see at the
- 3:14time. The Barbies were the love story.
- 3:18Barbie got married. Barbie had kids.
- 3:21I was up in that attic running the whole thing years before I
- 3:25ever wanted it for myself. And then I got older and I
- 3:29didn't need dolls anymore, but I wanted it for me, and that's
- 3:33when it stopped being cute. Nobody had a problem with me
- 3:36playing Wedding in the Attic. They had a problem when I
- 3:39started wanting the wedding. I watched Ever After as a
- 3:43teenager, and that movie did something to me.
- 3:45The way the Prince finds Cinderella and the way he kisses
- 3:48her, That was going to be my standard.
- 3:51That is what I wanted. And I got in my head that I was
- 3:54going to die before I ever got my first kiss, which really is
- 3:58the most teenage thing a person has ever worried about in the
- 4:01history of the world. But I was genuinely scared of
- 4:04it, so I told my mom. I told her I was afraid that I
- 4:07was going to die and never be kissed.
- 4:10There was no gushing. There was no oh honey, it's so
- 4:13exciting. There was no being a girl about
- 4:16it with me for 2 minutes. Just seriousness.
- 4:19That was the end of that conversation.
- 4:22And I'll be honest with you, some things have not changed and
- 4:26you've learned something from that.
- 4:28Not out loud. Nobody sits you down.
- 4:31You just learned that the gushy part of you is embarrassing, so
- 4:36you take it out of the room before anybody sees it.
- 4:38And that's when I started to get cold.
- 4:41It wasn't my personality, it was me putting that feeling away.
- 4:46Then I got my first boyfriend when he was just a friend.
- 4:48He was welcome, come on in, no problem anytime.
- 4:52The second we started dating, he couldn't come in the house.
- 4:55Obviously, that didn't last very long.
- 4:57What kills me is looking is that he actually had a lot of those
- 5:02hopeless romantic things I had been dreaming about.
- 5:05Then I dated the man who became my first husband and my parents
- 5:08despised it. Then I met the man I'm married
- 5:12to now and I warned him before he ever met them.
- 5:15I told him they are not going to be warm with you, they're going
- 5:18to be cold. Just know that going in.
- 5:20And I was right. It didn't matter who it was.
- 5:24It was never about the man. Every single time somebody
- 5:28wanted me, my mother got threatened by it.
- 5:31I got engaged twice, and my mother never congratulated me.
- 5:35So picture the girl in the attic building an entire city so
- 5:39Barbie could get married, and then picture her actually
- 5:42getting engaged and her own mother has nothing to say about
- 5:46it. And here's what I want to name
- 5:48for you, because I don't think most women have a word for it.
- 5:52You didn't stop enjoying things. You started needing permission.
- 5:57Everything you do has to justify itself.
- 6:00Now you get an hour where nobody needs anything from you, and you
- 6:03don't think what would be fun. You think, what should I get
- 6:07done? And if you do the fun thing
- 6:09anyway, the guilt consumes you. Your brain immediately says I
- 6:14should be cleaning, I should be with my kids, I shouldn't spend
- 6:17the money. I've got things I need to
- 6:18finish. And underneath every single one
- 6:20of those beliefs is a lot of us learned early and learned really
- 6:24well, which is that doing something just for me is
- 6:28selfish. That's the belief.
- 6:32Play doesn't die because you got older.
- 6:35Play dies when you decide you have to earn it first.
- 6:39And you see your body has two settings.
- 6:43There's handling it, and they're safe.
- 6:46And handling it is the thing you do when you're scanning.
- 6:49What's next? Who needs me?
- 6:51What did I forget? Is everybody OK?
- 6:52Is there enough money? Am I behind again?
- 6:55And that setting is useful. That setting got a lot of us
- 7:00through some things, but some of you have been running it since
- 7:04you were nine years old. And then we sit around in our
- 7:0740s wondering why we can't relax.
- 7:10You cannot play from that setting.
- 7:12It's not possible. But just know it's not a
- 7:15willpower thing or a personality thing.
- 7:17It's a wiring. Your body is not going to let
- 7:22you be silly while it thinks somebody else has to watch the
- 7:25door. So when a woman tells me she's
- 7:27just not a playful person, that's not a personality.
- 7:32That is a body nobody ever told it could stand down.
- 7:37And the part nobody warns you about is that switching over
- 7:40doesn't feel good. The first time, you'd think it'd
- 7:44feel like relief, right? It doesn't.
- 7:46It feels wrong. It feels like something's about
- 7:49to happen. You sit down with nothing to do,
- 7:53and your body is telling you to get up.
- 7:55Somebody asks you what did you do all afternoon?
- 7:59And nothing is somehow the wrong answer.
- 8:02And you feel that within your body.
- 8:05That's not you being bad at resting.
- 8:08That's your body doing the exact thing it learned to do in a
- 8:11house where staying alert was the smartest thing that could
- 8:15possibly be. Some of that alertness you do
- 8:18still need. If you're in a hard season right
- 8:20now, if there's really a lot riding on you, your body isn't
- 8:24being dramatic. It's reading the room, but
- 8:27there's a difference between a body that's on because this week
- 8:30is hard and a body that has been on for 30 years and doesn't
- 8:34remember there was ever any other way to be.
- 8:39Something else to keep in mind. We have confused being a
- 8:44responsible adult with being a serious adult, and those are not
- 8:49the same thing. You do have responsibilities,
- 8:52and there are seasons where this is genuinely nothing left at the
- 8:56end of the day. And I'm in one right now.
- 8:59I'm tired. I'm also welcome to the 40s in
- 9:03perimenopause. I don't feel good about my
- 9:05weight. I am more bland that I used to
- 9:07be, and it's not because I decided fun was beneath me, but
- 9:10because being tense has never once paid a bill faster.
- 9:14And I know women who are just exhausted as I am, but they
- 9:18still dance around their kitchen.
- 9:20So let's not pretend the tired is the whole story, because it
- 9:24isn't. We've gotten so good at working
- 9:28on ourselves that we forgot to live as ourselves.
- 9:32We work out to fix the body. We read to fix the mind.
- 9:37We listen to podcast to fix the wound.
- 9:40We go to therapy, we journal. We work on the marriage, we work
- 9:43on the parenting. I am in it with you.
- 9:46But at some point, you have to stop working on yourself long
- 9:51enough to actually enjoy being with yourself.
- 9:57So here's a question for you. When was the last time you did
- 10:02something for absolutely no reason other than you enjoyed
- 10:06doing it? I'm not telling you to go be
- 10:10playful, because that's really just another assignment and you
- 10:13don't need one more thing to feel like you failed this week.
- 10:17So here's what I'm asking instead.
- 10:21Pay attention to the no, because I say no to myself before
- 10:25anybody gets a chance to. Something sounds fun.
- 10:29And my first thought is I don't have time.
- 10:32I want something and I decide right away that I don't need it.
- 10:37That's the part I'm working on. Not the playing, but the no.
- 10:42And I'm not there yet. I'm not going to sit here and
- 10:45tell you I figured this out. No, I'm dancing in my kitchen,
- 10:47although I'd really like to be dancing in my kitchen.
- 10:50But I have stopped calling it my personality and starting to look
- 10:55at where I lost that. That little girl in the attic is
- 11:00still in there. Nobody took her.
- 11:03You just stop letting her out. And you're the only one who can
- 11:07change that. Now, if something in today's
- 11:11episode started something in you, if you're sitting there
- 11:13realizing you can't remember the last thing you did just because
- 11:16you liked it, that's the work I do with women.
- 11:20The link to book a conversation is in the show notes.
- 11:22No pressure, just a real conversation.
- 11:25And remember, you were laughed without an explanation, but you
- 11:29were never laughed without a purpose.
- 11:32You were found. I'll see you next week.
