- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, it looks like we're live now.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: So clock is ticking.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: If you're in here and you're watching me today, I really appreciate it.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: This is again, unannounced.
- 0:10I am testing out the live video feature here on Substack because
- 0:14it was recommended
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: to me.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: And I am going to start doing these lives twice per week.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: They'll probably be pretty short.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking like 10 to 15 minutes.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: But we're just, I'm playing it by ear.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: That's often how I kind of figure these things out.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: So thank you for being with me here today.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I do see we have a few people hopping in.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: So it makes me a little bit nervous.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: I believe this will be recorded later.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: So I'll be able to share it and you'll be able to rewatch it.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: For this short live,
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: the short test live,
- 0:45I'm going to briefly touch on the topic of domain authority or
- 0:50authority scores.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Because this question came up today with one of my clients,
- 0:55because I use primarily Ahrefs currently to get a quick score
- 1:00of a law firm's
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: website and see what their authority score is,
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: how much traffic they're getting,
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: which keywords they're ranking for.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: And so I use Ahrefs,
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: which has its own proprietary system for generating a domain rating,
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: I believe is what they call it.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: And it's important to keep in mind that all of these tools,
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Ahrefs,
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: SEMrush,
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Moz,
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: I'm sure there are a few others that I'm not thinking of,
- 1:27have their own proprietary tools and systems for generating the
- 1:31scores in their dashboards.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And so in Ahrefs,
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: a domain rating for a website might be eight,
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: where SEMrush gives it an authority score,
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: their version of the domain rating a 23.
- 1:46And so what's always important to keep in mind with these
- 1:51scores is they just
- 1:53represent what each of those platforms believes is important in
- 1:58determining
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: authority score or domain ranking.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Effectively,
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: all these tools are just trying to figure out,
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: like,
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: how does Google determine how authoritative a site is?
- 2:09And that's,
- 2:10you know,
- 2:10they build their authority score,
- 2:13domain rating,
- 2:15whatever.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: And then they sell subscriptions to their platform,
- 2:19and you can see what your website's domain rating authority
- 2:22score is on these
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: tools,
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: right?
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: So it's proprietary and it's a guess.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Like none of these platforms know like this is what Google is looking at.
- 2:31And so what matters more than like the number and how high it
- 2:38is and how low it is,
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: is how it compares to your competitors.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: So whenever you,
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: whatever tool you have,
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Ahrefs,
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: SEMrush,
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: open it up,
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: look at your domain domain.
- 2:53rating your domain and authority score,
- 2:55then check that against your next biggest competitor.
- 3:01And then you can compare authority scores and see what's the
- 3:05delta between us and
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: our competitor and use that to help make your decisions.
- 3:12Like,
- 3:13are the strategies we're using to enhance our authority online
- 3:18working?
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Yes or no?
- 3:20And that's the other part of it that we have to keep in mind is
- 3:23we use these scores
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: to assess our performance on a continuum.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: So if we hire an SEO company in July 2025,
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: we want and they start doing whatever they're doing with our website.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: We want to use the domain rating to see like,
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: how does that change between July 2025 and February 2026?
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Is there an increase?
- 3:50Then it's possible what the SEO company is doing is working or
- 3:53something on the
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: marketing team is doing or working.
- 3:57But I think this is where we need to start getting specific
- 4:03about what we're doing
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: and what tools we're using to measure also.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: I recently found out,
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: kind of preparing for this live and answering my own questions,
- 4:12that Ahrefs develops their domain rating score primarily based
- 4:18on your backlink
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: profile.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: where SEMrush combines your backlink profile,
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: behavior metrics,
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: like how people navigate through your site,
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: how they use your site,
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: and also your keyword rankings,
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: your organic visibility.
- 4:34So apparently SEMrush has more factors that go into the
- 4:42authority score it assigns
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: your business.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Whereas like Ahrefs is mostly based on backlinks.
- 4:49So if you,
- 4:50let's say you hire an SEO company and say,
- 4:53we want you to rebuild our website.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: We want you to update our pages.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: We want you to write new pages, improve internal linking, all that stuff.
- 5:04We want you to do a whole bunch of work,
- 5:05but we want you to do it on our site.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Don't do backlinks.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: We give up backlinks.
- 5:09And if you're using Ahrefs to track your domain rating or
- 5:15authority score,
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: which is mostly backlink based,
- 5:19then you're probably not going to see much movement in your
- 5:23Ahrefs score as the SEO
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: company works on your site.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: And so it's interesting to think about.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: If you tell an SEO company,
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: we'll do everything except backlinks,
- 5:31and then you monitor them with a tool that primarily assesses
- 5:36domain rating based
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: on your backlink profile,
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: there's a mismatch there.
- 5:40And you're probably not going to give the SEO company credits
- 5:43proper credit for the
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: improvements they made for your site.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Of course,
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: though,
- 5:48SEO companies will also have a variety of these tracking tools
- 5:53that they use and
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: compare sites and compare domain ratings.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: So they'll probably come prepared with information.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: You know, hey, this is what SEMrush says.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Ahrefs doesn't show much movement,
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: but,
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: here's all this growth happening in your authority score on SEMrush.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: And for this live, I primarily just talked about those two tools.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: I also like to use Bright Local,
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: which doesn't really have an authority score,
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: but I really like their local search grid.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: But again, like these other tools, Bright Local is
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: uses a proprietary,
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: method of querying data search API to determine what your local grid,
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: looks like.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: And hopefully, you know, I don't know if I can use a visual here.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'll have to print stuff out and like hold it.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: But,
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 6:46I'm talking about when an SEO company shows you a map with all
- 6:51these like orange,
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: red or green dots on it,
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: one,
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: two,
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: three,
- 6:5610 plus to show you like how you how your business ranks in the
- 7:00local map pack.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm talking about.
- 7:02So Bright Local has its own proprietary system for querying
- 7:06Google's API to get
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: back that data on how your business ranks.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: But what's interesting is it's also time-dependent.
- 7:15You could run that same report back-to-back and see minor
- 7:19variations in the score,
- 7:20but
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Or if you run them at different times of the day,
- 7:24you'll see huge variations in the score in terms of like how
- 7:29your business ranks.
- 7:30And sometimes like in a period where people are searching for
- 7:35attorneys less,
- 7:37like during holiday seasons or back to school periods when we
- 7:42normally expect to
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: see like lead slowdowns.
- 7:46If you're suddenly see that you're ranking well over like the
- 7:50Thanksgiving holiday
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: or the Christmas holiday,
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: your score shoot to one.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: That's actually maybe because the search traffic has decreased.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: So that's just that's just a trend I've noticed, like how you rank.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: can vary depending on how much search traffic there is overall.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: So I don't know if anyone has more information on that.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: I'm going to have to continue to do some research.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: So I'm keeping this.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: It's a live session short.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: If you weren't here at the very beginning,
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: this is my very first test Substack live session.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: And so I'm actually going to come back online on,
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: let me check my calendar,
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: but I think Monday I'm going to do a second live session.
- 8:35Actually,
- 8:35let me pull up my calendar to give everyone a firm time and
- 8:39date.
- 8:43So,
- 8:44yeah,
- 8:45on President's Day at 3 p.m.,
- 8:47I'm going to come on here,
- 8:49do another live broadcast.
- 8:51I am doing a deep dive into the announcement for ChatGPT ads
- 8:57this weekend.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: I talked to a few SEO companies this week about it.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: And...
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: I can tell you right now, like it's not live yet.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: We're not showing ads yet.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: I don't believe anyone is,
- 9:09but it's announced and there's a business manager account that
- 9:14you can create for
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: yourself and your business.
- 9:16So I'm going to spend the weekend reading up on it,
- 9:19getting what information I can.
- 9:21I'll come on here and do another live broadcast and share what
- 9:25I know about Chow2PT ads and how
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: law firms could potentially use them.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: Thank you all so much,
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: my tiny group of people who showed up to this unannounced Substack Live,
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: and I will see you guys on Monday.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Bye.
