- 0:00Have you ever had one of those brutal Parkinson days that just
- 0:02hit you completely out of the blue?
- 0:04Yeah. You know, those days you wake up
- 0:06feeling fine, and then out of nowhere, your body just goes,
- 0:09Nope, not today. Well, what if I told you there's
- 0:12actually a way to see those bad days coming?
- 0:14Because I've learned after 15 years with Parkinson's how to
- 0:17spot the warning signs, how to track them and how to use that
- 0:20data to take back control. And today, I'm going to show you
- 0:23exactly how I do it. This is Part 1 of a three-part
- 0:27series on tracking your Parkinson's.
- 0:30Today, the five things I track every single day.
- 0:33The next episode, how to decode the patterns in your data.
- 0:36And Saturday, how to take this tracking to your neurologist and
- 0:39get real results. So if you're tired of feeling
- 0:42blindsided by bad days, then this series is for you.
- 0:45And let's get going. Welcome to Living with
- 0:49Parkinson's, the good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:53Real talk, real life, real community with Bryce Perry.
- 0:58Let's begin. Hey, I am Bryce and welcome to
- 1:02Doing Life today. And if you're new here, this
- 1:04channel is all about living well with Parkinson's, real life,
- 1:07real talk and real community. And this week we're going to
- 1:11dive into something that's changed my life tracking.
- 1:14Not complicated spreadsheets, not expensive apps.
- 1:17Just five simple things that help me predict my best days,
- 1:20avoid my worst days, and show my doctor exactly what's working
- 1:24and what's not. OK, let's get straight into this
- 1:29because here's the thing about Parkinson's.
- 1:31It feels random. One day you're fine, the next
- 1:35day you can barely move and you have no idea why.
- 1:38But here's what I've learned. Parkinson's isn't as random as
- 1:42it feels. There are patterns, there's
- 1:44triggers, there's timing issues. The problem is, if you're not
- 1:49tracking, you're not going to see them.
- 1:52See, I spent five years of my Parkinson's journey thinking
- 1:55about my thinking that my body was just betraying me randomly.
- 1:59And then I started writing things down, and suddenly I
- 2:02could see it. Late lunches were killing my
- 2:05afternoon dose. Poor sleep on Sundays meant a
- 2:08rough Monday. Stress on Tuesday meant tremors
- 2:11on Wednesday. And once I started seeing these
- 2:13patterns, I could do something about them.
- 2:16And that's what we're doing this week.
- 2:19All right, quick thing. If you're tracking along with me
- 2:21this week, hit that like button so I know that you're here and
- 2:24subscribe because Thursday's episode on pattern recognition
- 2:28builds directly on this and you don't want to miss it.
- 2:31All right, let's talk about the five things that I track every
- 2:34single day. Grab a grab a pen, open up your
- 2:37note notes app, whatever you use.
- 2:39Because these five things are the foundation of everything
- 2:42when it comes to tracking thing #1 medication, dose.
- 2:48Write down what you took and how much.
- 2:51Not just I took my meds, OK, but 10 AM, one tablet levitopa, 25
- 2:58by 100. Why?
- 3:00Because when you're tracking patterns, you need to know
- 3:02exactly what what was in your system.
- 3:05As an example, if you had a great afternoon, was it because
- 3:08you took your full dose? Or did you actually accidentally
- 3:11take half a dose and your body responded better?
- 3:15You don't know unless you write it down.
- 3:18OK, here's the second thing. The time you took it, and this
- 3:21is huge. Most people think I take my meds
- 3:25three times a day. That's consistent.
- 3:27But when I started tracking actual times, I realized that my
- 3:31three times a day or my every three hours was all over the
- 3:35place. Monday 8:00 AM, Monday 1:00 PM
- 3:39and 6:00 PM and Tuesday 9/2 and seven, Wednesday 7:30.
- 3:44You know, 1235, you know whatever.
- 3:46It's not if it's not consistent, it's chaos.
- 3:50And guess what? My symptoms were chaotic too.
- 3:53You know, once I locked in my timing, same, you know, meds on
- 3:56time every time my symptoms smoothed out.
- 4:00So write down the exact time every time, right?
- 4:04Not morning, but 843. OK, here's the third thing.
- 4:10When did that kick in? When did those meds kick in?
- 4:12How long after you took that that Med did you feel them start
- 4:15to work? For me, it's usually 25 to 30
- 4:18minutes. Some days it's an hour, some
- 4:21other days it's 20 minutes. Why does that matter?
- 4:25Because if you're kick in time gets longer, that's a red flag.
- 4:29It might mean that you're eating too close to your dose, that
- 4:32your gut absorption is changing your door.
- 4:35Your dose needs some adjusting. Track it and start to notice the
- 4:39patterns. Don't guess anymore.
- 4:41All right, here's the fourth thing that I write that I track
- 4:44when it wore off. Now that is the most important
- 4:48thing that people miss. You take your meds, they work,
- 4:52and then they stop working. But when exactly did they stop?
- 4:56Was it 3 hours? Was it 4 hours?
- 4:58Was it 2 1/2 hours? Write it down and track it.
- 5:02Because if your meds are supposed to last four hours but
- 5:05they're only lasting 3, that's the conversation that you need
- 5:08to have with your neurologist. And if you can't have that
- 5:11conversation without data, like you just can't do it without
- 5:14data. And here's the thing #5 outside
- 5:17influences. Now this is everything else that
- 5:20can affect your symptoms. Food.
- 5:23Did you eat protein close to your dose?
- 5:25Sleep. Did you get less than six hours
- 5:27last night? Stress.
- 5:28Did you have a rough conversation?
- 5:31Did you have stressful appointment?
- 5:33An exercise? Did you work out?
- 5:35Did you walk? Did you do nothing?
- 5:36Did you move? Weather, Is it cold out?
- 5:38Is it hot out? Is it humid?
- 5:40I know this sounds like a lot but you don't need to track
- 5:43everything everyday, just track what you notice.
- 5:47OK? If you had a bad afternoon,
- 5:50write it down. Slept poorly last night or ate
- 5:53lunch late right? Don't make the menu what you
- 5:56ate. Just ate lunch late.
- 5:58And over time, you'll start to see which outside influences
- 6:01matter the most to you, OK. And what have the biggest effect
- 6:04on you. OK, so those are the five things
- 6:08simple right? Now, if you're thinking, Bryce,
- 6:11I don't want to track all this in a notebook, I get it.
- 6:14Well, listen, I've got a simple tracker template.
- 6:17There's a link in the description.
- 6:18Just grab it and use it and make it your own.
- 6:20It's just a free thing you can download.
- 6:21It's nothing fancy, OK at all. And if this is helping you, hit
- 6:26that subscribe button because Thursday's episode is where this
- 6:29gets really powerful. Really powerful.
- 6:33Now I'm going to show you how this works and why or why this
- 6:36works. A few years ago, I had three
- 6:38days in a one week where my afternoon meds just didn't seem
- 6:41to work. My first thought was great,
- 6:45Parkinson's is levelled up again.
- 6:47But then I looked at my notes. You know, Monday late lunch.
- 6:52You know, Thursday lunch at 2:00 instead of noon, Saturday lunch
- 6:56at 1:45. All three days I'd eaten late.
- 7:01Now here's the thing. You know this protein and
- 7:03levodopa, they compete for absorption, right?
- 7:07The protein and levodopa are like putting 2 toddlers in the
- 7:10back of a minivan and telling them not to fight over a piece
- 7:12of candy. There, there, that's there.
- 7:14It's impossible. So when I eat a big lunch with
- 7:17protein close, you know, to my dose times, my meds don't absorb
- 7:20that well. They really don't.
- 7:21So I tested it the next week. I ate lunch at my regular time,
- 7:2612:30 every day. And guess what?
- 7:29My afternoon dose worked perfectly.
- 7:32Pattern confirmed, problem solved.
- 7:36And I never would just have figured that out if I wasn't
- 7:38tracking. I would have been thinking, hmm,
- 7:41I would have been trying to think back to last week.
- 7:42What happened on Tuesday? What happened on Tuesday?
- 7:45Quick little note, not a journal, not a huge journal, not
- 7:48what you ate. Just quick note and you're off
- 7:49to the races. Now, before I show you my
- 7:52tracker or the tracker that I use, I'm going to bring it up on
- 7:54the screen. Let me pass the microphone to
- 7:57Carmen, my wife and care partner, because she caught
- 8:01patterns that I completely missed.
- 8:02And she has a little word for you today.
- 8:06And here's what she had me say to you.
- 8:08Hey everyone, Carmen here. One thing I've learned as
- 8:11Bryce's care partner is I see patterns that he doesn't because
- 8:15when you're living with Parkinson's, you're in survival
- 8:17mode a lot. You're just trying to get
- 8:19through the day. But I'm watching from the
- 8:22outside and I noticed things like Bryce even more tired every
- 8:26Tuesday for the past month. What's different on Mondays?
- 8:30Turns out his Monday, his Monday evening yoga class was
- 8:34exhausting his dopamine reserves.
- 8:36He switches to Wednesday mornings.
- 8:38Problem solved. So if you're a care partner
- 8:41watching this, your observations matter and they matter a lot.
- 8:45Write them down and share them gently.
- 8:48You might be seeing patterns that your that your person just
- 8:50cannot see yet. And that's exactly right.
- 8:54Carmen, Carmen's notes have saved me more time than I can
- 8:58count. I'm telling you right now.
- 8:59And if you're a care partner, grab that tracker template too,
- 9:02and track what you're seeing. If, if it helps both of you, it
- 9:05helps both of you. Like, think about that.
- 9:07You track, they track and compare notes, right?
- 9:10And we'll see who's seen the truth.
- 9:13All right, let me show you the tracker that I actually use.
- 9:16OK, now it's not fancy. It's a simple table with six
- 9:20columns. Date, dose, and time kicked in,
- 9:24wore off, symptoms, outside influences.
- 9:28That's it. And every morning I fill in.
- 9:31I fill in yesterday's row. Takes me two minutes.
- 9:34At the end of the week, I review it and I look to see if there's
- 9:37a pattern. That's the system.
- 9:39You can use a notebook, you can use the template that's in the
- 9:42description. You can use your phone note app.
- 9:45It doesn't matter to start and start today.
- 9:48Don't wait for the next big thing or the app or something
- 9:51bigger and brighter and better. I don't care if it's the back of
- 9:53a napkin to start writing it down.
- 9:56Then track it consistently. OK, here's what's going to
- 9:59happen if you start tracking this week, Week one, you're just
- 10:03collecting data. It might feel pointless, but
- 10:06stick with it. So again, you're not looking for
- 10:08patterns, you're just collecting.
- 10:09That's all you're doing. Week 2 you'll start to notice
- 10:12small patterns. Huh.
- 10:14I always feel worse on Wednesdays.
- 10:15Interesting. And then by the third week
- 10:18you'll start testing theories. What if I move by Wednesday dose
- 10:2130 minutes earlier? By the 4th week you're going to
- 10:25have real data to show your neurologist and they'll actually
- 10:28listen. Because you're not guessing,
- 10:29you're coming in with facts. And it isn't magic.
- 10:33It's just paying attention. But paying attention is how you
- 10:36take back control. OK, now tracking is 1 one thing,
- 10:41right? But the real power comes in
- 10:43decoding the patterns. And that's what we're going to
- 10:46cover off in the next episode, what your Parkinson's tracking
- 10:50data is really telling you. I'm going to break down timing
- 10:54patterns and food interactions, environmental triggers, and how
- 10:58to test your theories. OK, so it's huge, so hit
- 11:01subscribe if you don't, so you don't miss it.
- 11:03This series only works if you watch all three parts.
- 11:07Now a quick solo spotlight shout out to actually, they want to be
- 11:12anonymous, but that's fine. But somebody in the inner circle
- 11:14who started tracking two weeks ago, they start tracking their
- 11:17meds two weeks ago and discovered that their evening
- 11:21stiffness was directly linked to her, to them, them skipping
- 11:25their afternoon walk. OK, she added.
- 11:28The walk back in stiffness dropped by 40%.
- 11:32That's the power of tracking. I'm so proud of you.
- 11:35You know who you are. I gave it up obviously, said
- 11:38she. But you know who you are and I'm
- 11:39so proud of you. That's in your circle.
- 11:40And OK, so here's some homework this week, actually this the
- 11:45next couple of days, download the tracker from the link in the
- 11:48description. It's free.
- 11:49Just download it, print it off OK.
- 11:51And I want you to start tracking these five things for the next
- 11:53two days. Come back for episode 2 on
- 11:56Thursday, right? And if you're doing this with
- 11:58me, drop a comment in the in the comments saying hashtag start
- 12:03tracking. So I know you're in.
- 12:04And on Thursday, we're going to bring them to the video with you
- 12:08and we're going to go through them.
- 12:10And I'm going to show you some things that are going to blow
- 12:11your mind. OK.
- 12:13And hey, you know what? We're almost 15,000 people in
- 12:17this YouTube community. And every week, we're figuring
- 12:19out how to live better with Parkinson's, just doing it one
- 12:23day at a time, one step at a time.
- 12:25So thank you for being here, and thank you for showing up.
- 12:29And hey, you didn't think I was going to leave you without the
- 12:31prices of the episode, did you? You can't fix what you can't
- 12:35see. So start tracking.
- 12:38There you go. That was a quick one.
- 12:40Until Thursday. Keep showing up.
- 12:43You keep tracking. And hey, you keep doing life and
- 12:47keep doing live. Today, I'll see you on Thursday
- 12:50with your tracker. Let's go.
- 12:54Parkinson's may be part of your life, but it doesn't get to
- 12:57define it. Thanks for listening to Living
- 12:59with Parkinson's, the good, the bad, and the reality.
- 13:03If this episode moved you, helped you, or reminded you
- 13:07you're not alone, share it with someone who needs to hear it.
- 13:10Want to go deeper? The inner server was waiting
