Latest / Fostering Faith / Consistency Over Intensity

- 0:00And so welcome back to Fostering Faith. I am
- 0:02Tracie. I'm going to be your host. And this is
- 0:04going to be our second fitness episode. And this
- 0:07is like a little bonus track. And so just because
- 0:09we love our faith in fitness, we thought we would
- 0:13put them together. And so we have been challenging
- 0:16people for the last two months on social media.
- 0:19And so if you're not part of that challenge,
- 0:20check us out on Instagram, Facebook, not posting
- 0:25a lot on YouTube, but just check us out on Instagram
- 0:28Reels Fostering Faith. And so we are in a challenge
- 0:31this month of wall squats and pushups. And so
- 0:36we're just adding a pushup every day. And so
- 0:38in the, at the end, we'll be doing 31 pushups
- 0:40and a second, second wall squat. Last month we
- 0:43did a plank chair series. And so where we just
- 0:47did 60 second, one minute 30 and three minute
- 0:49planks. And so we don't know what November will
- 0:52bring, but if you guys have any comments of what
- 0:55the next challenge should bring, drop it along
- 0:57in the comments. And so have you ever had the
- 1:00mindset that can turn one missed workout into
- 1:03a lost month? And so oftentimes we start a diet
- 1:05on Monday, and by Tuesday we're done. We're like,
- 1:09well, we'll just start it next week. And so we
- 1:11have an all or nothing mentality. And so why
- 1:13small, repeatable choices often serve us better
- 1:16than dramatic starts? Then we also want to build
- 1:20a simple, minimal, regular, and extra movement
- 1:23plan for real life. And so welcome back to Fostering
- 1:27State. These are your bonus episodes for your
- 1:29fitness, where we connect spiritual growth and
- 1:32practical care for our bodies as that's God given
- 1:34us. And so today we're choosing consistency over
- 1:36intensity. As always, this is general education.
- 1:41This is not personal medical advice. Adapt movements
- 1:43to your ability and follow your individual guidance
- 1:46by your own health care provider. And so have
- 1:50you ever started on Monday with a plan so ambitious
- 1:52and that by Thursday you needed a vacation from
- 1:55it? You decided that you would work out every
- 1:57day, completely change the way that you ate,
- 1:58wake up an hour early, drink all your water,
- 2:00and never miss again. All I'm going to do at
- 2:02this time. And then guess what? Life happened.
- 2:05You slept badly. A meeting ran late. You didn't
- 2:08make it to the gym. Somebody needed you. You
- 2:10missed one day. And the voice of all or nothing
- 2:15said, see, you failed again. The problem was
- 2:21not necessarily a lack of character. The plan
- 2:23may have required a version of your life that
- 2:25actually has never existed. And for some reason,
- 2:30we felt, you felt, like it was just gonna magically
- 2:33happen that you were gonna get to lunch at noon
- 2:36when you have never been to lunch at noon. You
- 2:40decided that you were gonna drink a gallon of
- 2:41water and the most that you have ever drank is
- 2:4332 ounces. You decided that you were gonna have
- 2:46a hundred grams of protein in a day where you
- 2:48normally will consume a beef stick. And so we
- 2:52set up these ridiculous plans that typically
- 2:54never work because we put these situations into
- 2:59a magical life that has never happened. And we
- 3:02all of a sudden just assume the day that we want
- 3:04to become healthy, that the day that our life
- 3:06is going to magically be better. And so instant
- 3:09intensity may feel powerful because it produces
- 3:13a dramatic beginning, but consistency is quieter.
- 3:16It repeats a manageable action long enough for
- 3:19the action to become part of our life. And so
- 3:21often people ask me, what is the best diet, the
- 3:23one that you're going to do, the one that's actually
- 3:25going to fit along with your lifestyle. And so
- 3:28we have scripture to kind of back this up. And
- 3:29so Zachariah says, for those who despise the
- 3:34small, for who despises the day of small beginnings.
- 3:37In context, God's people were rebuilding and
- 3:40the visible beginning looked impossible. The
- 3:43verse is not a fitness formula, but it reveals
- 3:45something important about faithfulness. Small
- 3:48does not mean meaningless. Jesus spoke about
- 3:51being faithful with little. The kingdom often
- 3:54appears through seeds, yeast, daily bread, cups
- 3:59of water, ordinary obedience. God is not embarrassed
- 4:03by the beginning that fits in the palm of your
- 4:06hand. We often want the kind of change everyone
- 4:10can see immediately. We all of a sudden we want
- 4:12biceps, we want abs, we want the little shoehorn
- 4:16at the back of our triceps. We want quads. We
- 4:18want a rear end that you can bounce a quarter
- 4:20off of. But you know what? It doesn't happen
- 4:23like that. But much of the formation happens
- 4:26through choices that no one applause. Putting
- 4:28your shoes by the front door, great job. Going
- 4:31to bed on time to recover, another great idea.
- 4:35Making a brief walk between responsibilities,
- 4:38between meetings, between clients, between picking
- 4:40up your kids if you want to get, if you can get
- 4:43to Practice pickup or school pickup. Do a lap
- 4:46around the parking lot Complaining two sets instead
- 4:50of skipping because you couldn't do five and
- 4:54so you did two Didn't get five done, but you
- 4:57did two Consistency is not perfection. It is
- 5:00a practice of returning and that distraction
- 5:03matters perfection asked did I excuse Did I execute
- 5:07the plan without interruptions? Consistency asked
- 5:11when interruptions came did I find my way? back.
- 5:15You have to be a consistent person without missing
- 5:19days. You can be faithful in a complicated season.
- 5:23The measure is not an unbroken stake. It is a
- 5:25pattern of returning to what matters. And so
- 5:28build a plan that can survive real life. Don't
- 5:32set yourself up for failure. I want to give you
- 5:34three levels, medium, regular, and extra. Your
- 5:39minimum is the smallest meaningful version that
- 5:43you can do on a hard day. You should be so realistic
- 5:46that you do not need an ideal condition. Maybe
- 5:50it is three minutes of mobility. Maybe it is
- 5:52walking to the end of the block and back. Maybe
- 5:55it is one set or a set to stand and wall push
- 5:59-ups. The minimum is not your whole goal, but
- 6:03it keeps the pathway open. Minimally, on my busiest
- 6:07day, I can do this. Regular level is the plan
- 6:11that fits in your ordinary week. It might be
- 6:1420 minutes of walking three days a week or two
- 6:17brief strength sessions. Your plan will depend
- 6:20on your current capacity and your professional
- 6:22guidance. The point is that it belongs in a life
- 6:26that you could actually live. And then the extra
- 6:29level is what you may do whenever you have extra
- 6:33time, energy, and that recovery allows. It's
- 6:36a longer walk, another set, a class. or even
- 6:39a more challenging session. Extra is available,
- 6:42but not the price of being proud of yourself.
- 6:45Hold up three cards or count the level on your
- 6:49fingers. Minimum keeps the promise. Regular builds
- 6:53the pattern. And extra expands the challenge.
- 6:57What every day is required to be an extra day,
- 6:59we often end up with no plan entire days. Then
- 7:03shame fills the gaps. And tiered plans give us
- 7:07a faithful next step more than one kind of day.
- 7:11And so a simple movement circuit. And so you
- 7:14have a chair and you have a wall. And so create
- 7:17a minimal session so where you can sit there
- 7:21and you can march or walk in place for 30 seconds.
- 7:25Seated? Fine. If you can't get up, just do it
- 7:27seated. Keep the pace conversational. Second,
- 7:31try five sit to stands. from a stable chair.
- 7:35If you are sitting in a chair, get up and down
- 7:37five times. If you can do air squats, do five
- 7:40air squats, do 10 air squats. Use your hands
- 7:42if needed. Standing and sitting is not right
- 7:46for you. Remain seated and press your feet into
- 7:48the floor, and then just engage your quads five
- 7:51times. Squeeze your butt, squeeze your butt.
- 7:54Third, place your hands on the wall and do five
- 7:57push -ups. Keep your body in a comfortable line,
- 8:00bend your elbows. and move toward the wall and
- 8:03press away. And you can press your palms towards
- 8:07your chest. You can be in a seated position together
- 8:10too. Fourth, take five slow heel raises while
- 8:15holding on a city surface or lift and lower your
- 8:18heels while seated. Then breathe and ask, do
- 8:21I have the capacity to do another round? If yes,
- 8:24repeat. If no, your minimum is completed. And
- 8:28guess what? You showed up. That short circuit
- 8:31may not look dramatic on camera, but when you
- 8:34are doing it consecutively, and you're able to
- 8:40repeat it over and over and over and over again,
- 8:43it can become the doorway of a greater strength
- 8:45and confidence. And to remove the friction of
- 8:49your day, consistency becomes easier when the
- 8:52next action is obvious. Choose a cue that already
- 8:55exists in your day. After morning prayer, stretch
- 8:58for three minutes. After lunch, walk 10 minutes.
- 9:01I often do videos on lunchtime because I honestly
- 9:03feel that it should be a hard stop. It should
- 9:06be a non -negotiable. That we should get out
- 9:08and do a movement. We should do a stretch. We
- 9:10should do a strength training workout. We should
- 9:11be able to do something on our lunch just to
- 9:13have enough energy to get through the rest of
- 9:16the day. Because if we expend energy, we get
- 9:18energy back. It's a four -year evening shower.
- 9:22Complete one strength training workout. This
- 9:24is not about turning every quiet moment into
- 9:27predict - to productivity, but it's about giving
- 9:31a valued practice in a relatable moment. And
- 9:34so then remove one point of friction. Put the
- 9:38shoes where you can see them. Save the workout
- 9:40in advance. Keep the resistance band by your
- 9:43chair and decide minimum means before you are
- 9:48tired. Finally, record your faithfulness. A check
- 9:52mark on a calendar is enough. You do not have
- 9:55to use a tracking app or anything fancy, but
- 9:58write it down. I cannot preach this enough. Write
- 10:01it down. Because you can see your faithfulness.
- 10:04You can say, I got a checkmark yesterday. I got
- 10:05a checkmark today. And so sometimes it's about
- 10:07just checkmarking the boxes. I did it. I did
- 10:10it. I did it. Did I want to? No, but I did it.
- 10:12I showed up today. Galatians 6 encourages us
- 10:16not to grow weary in doing good. That does not
- 10:19mean ignoring exhaustion. Sometimes we're not
- 10:22growing weary. requires rest, support, and more
- 10:26sustainable pace. Faithfulness is not frantic.
- 10:29And so in these episodes, we want to make sure
- 10:31that you guys are seeking advice, making sure
- 10:34that you guys are healthy enough, but sitting
- 10:36and doing exercises, using the wall so you don't
- 10:39have to get on the floor. Adapt to what you know
- 10:41that your body can do and then advance as you
- 10:43guys get stronger. And so it's about logging
- 10:46your food, write down your food, please write
- 10:49down your food. and that way you can go back
- 10:50because if you're starving at seven o 'clock
- 10:52you can go back and say you know what I didn't
- 10:54eat today I didn't hit my protein goals because
- 10:56our protein goals are a gram of protein per ideal
- 10:59ideal body weight not what we're weighing now
- 11:03but what we're supposed to you know supposed
- 11:05to weigh and making sure that we're hitting those
- 11:08goals making sure that we're logging our water
- 11:10are we so tired and fatigued because we only
- 11:12drank 16 ounces of water and so making sure that
- 11:15we're logging our food making sure that we're
- 11:16logging our water And then just movement. Movement
- 11:19is so important. And so having just mobility
- 11:22days. And so I typically have cardio in the morning
- 11:26and then I have strengthening in the afternoon.
- 11:28But on Thursdays is mobility Thursdays. And so
- 11:31I do a lot of stretching and mobility work on
- 11:34Thursdays. And so it's not about just having
- 11:36cardio, but it's about movement and having hip
- 11:38mobility and pack and just being able to rotate
- 11:41your spine and having flexion in your neck and
- 11:43your shoulders and your joints and just having
- 11:45that great stretch day. And so we hope these
- 11:48little bonus episodes of fitness encourage you.
- 11:51If you do, please write us a comment. Share these
- 11:53episodes with somebody that is struggling just
- 11:55to start. Just because you're on day, you know,
- 11:59five years and 36 days of a perfect plan, that
- 12:02doesn't mean that your friend has to start where
- 12:03you are at. I mean, so day one starts today.
- 12:06Day one starts tomorrow. And so if God gave us
- 12:09a tomorrow, then we get to start. And so just
- 12:12allowing ourselves that Great posture of humility
- 12:16and it's about progression and not perfection
- 12:19I mean there's gonna be days where we just don't
- 12:22feel like doing it, but we do it anyway There's
- 12:24gonna be days where we miss but you know what
- 12:27we get to start again tomorrow And so show up
- 12:30for yourself consistently show up every day And
- 12:33do what you can do do your minimum do your maximum
- 12:36do what your body is going to allow you to do
- 12:38that day and so ask yourself where Have I confused
- 12:43harder with better? Where have I built a plan
- 12:46around the most energetic part of the day? And
- 12:49where am I judging myself even on a normal day?
- 12:52Are you putting your harder workout in the morning
- 12:54or in the afternoon? What are you doing as far
- 12:56as setting yourself for success or failure? And
- 12:59so I have more energy in the morning. That's
- 13:00why I run. I need a break and get out some frustrations
- 13:03in the afternoon. That's why I do weight lifting
- 13:06in the afternoon. And so for the next two weeks,
- 13:09choose three levels. Write one sentence for minimum,
- 13:12one for regular, and one for extra. Let the minimum
- 13:15be a genuinely attainable. Let the regular be
- 13:20specific and the extra remain optional. And so
- 13:23let's pray. that fit our responsibilities, our
- 13:45health, and our season. And if we miss a day,
- 13:47help us return without condemnation. Form us
- 13:50patience, steadiness, and gratitude for every
- 13:52day with a bit of capacity that you provide.
- 13:55We pray this in your name, Jesus, amen, and amen.
- 13:59And we are building on levels, and we send these
- 14:03episodes for accountability partners to make
- 14:05we are stronger and more fit together. And so
- 14:08tell me what your minimum is. Not an impressive
- 14:11answer, but an honest one. And until next time,
- 14:14remember, consistency is not about never missing.
- 14:18It's learning to return. Have a great week, guys.
- 14:21We love you. Bye.
