- 0:28and let's see where this leads. I often wonder about our value
- 0:35or our perceived value in other people's lives.
- 0:39How relevant are we actually? How easy is it to replace us in
- 0:45a relationship, in a family dynamic, in situations, and even
- 0:50at work? And recently I watched my
- 0:53daughter think about it in real time.
- 0:57I went to go see her perform in a workshop.
- 1:00Those things are kind of fast and loose with the rules.
- 1:04You have a part, but things can change in real time.
- 1:08And in the show they did and the changes impacted her.
- 1:13That morning she was getting ready and she was all excited.
- 1:16She was excited that I was going to go watch her perform.
- 1:19I got there early so I could have a front row seat.
- 1:23She was sitting against the wall with her friends getting ready
- 1:25to take the stage. She was all smiles.
- 1:28She went up to do her first part, then she sat down again.
- 1:32Then her and her friends popped up to run to their second role.
- 1:36But this time she was intercepted by the drama teacher
- 1:40telling her that her role had been given to somebody else
- 1:43because she didn't make one of the rehearsals.
- 1:46I saw my daughter confused as she sat down once, sitting
- 1:51straight up, all smiles. Now she was withering, slumped,
- 1:57head drawn, and the tears started to fall.
- 2:01I saw that whole arc of emotions settle into sadness and I kept
- 2:07thinking about the little her inside.
- 2:11It's the little me we all carry inside of us, the one that's
- 2:15confused at times when other people make decisions that we
- 2:18don't necessarily understand or aren't given enough information
- 2:22so that we can understand. The one that protects us in
- 2:26moments where we feel slighted or hurt.
- 2:30She sat there and she couldn't hold back those emotions.
- 2:35She had forgotten that she was in a play, part of a collective
- 2:391 where the rules change in the middle of the show.
- 2:43She was more into protecting herself, and I think she was
- 2:47thinking about where she fit in her value versus her perceived
- 2:52value. I know in jobs we think that a
- 2:55lot. I hear people say that they're
- 2:57irreplaceable, that if they were to quit or be fired, it would
- 3:01take five people to do their job.
- 3:04And maybe we tell ourselves that.
- 3:06So we feel pride of ownership, a reason to show up.
- 3:10We feel valuable within a collective.
- 3:13We feel irreplaceable. You can feel that way within
- 3:17relationships, family dynamics, friendships.
- 3:20You tell yourself what you need to to feel relevant and it makes
- 3:25sense. But then I think about my
- 3:28friend's husband's advice to her every time she comes home,
- 3:31saying about how somebody forgot about her or somebody didn't pay
- 3:36enough attention, etcetera, he reminds her, people aren't
- 3:40thinking about you. You're not that important.
- 3:43Nobody's that important. Everybody is worried about
- 3:46themselves. Everybody is thinking about
- 3:48themselves. At first when she told me this,
- 3:51it sounded so harsh coming out of her mouth.
- 3:54Even as I say it, it sounds harsh.
- 3:57But then I started to digest that information and see it
- 4:02differently. What if instead of seeing it
- 4:04like nobody cares about you, you're easy to forget, Maybe
- 4:09even a victim of being forgotten about, being replaced.
- 4:14Instead, you're free to roam. Roam free knowing that nobody's
- 4:18paying attention with that magnifying glass that we think
- 4:22everybody has us under. Maybe we're just making cameos
- 4:26in other people's movies. And when you think of it that
- 4:29way, when was the last time you remembered a cameo on ATV Show?
- 4:34You remember the star players, and in somebody else's movie,
- 4:38their life, they are the star. So that means you've got to move
- 4:42into position one in your life. You've got to make sure you
- 4:45remember that you're the star. And that again goes back to me
- 4:49remembering that we matter, that for every person, it's important
- 4:53to remind yourself that you are the most important person in
- 4:57your story. And you've got to keep that in
- 5:00mind with all decisions you make, including how you protect
- 5:04yourself in the moment or in the aftermath.
- 5:07Like for my daughter, I wish he had gone up to the teacher later
- 5:11and said, why did you cut my part?
- 5:14It really hurt my feelings. I wish she had had the strength
- 5:18to understand why she was hurt rather than carrying it with her
- 5:22later in the day. That feeling of confusion just
- 5:25sat with her, maybe even made her ruminate a little.
- 5:29I'm hoping that that wasn't the case.
- 5:32That usually is the case with adults.
- 5:34We take a conversation we had with somebody and we replay it.
- 5:38For what reason, I'm not sure. Things can't change, and if
- 5:43something really did go South, we would know because somebody
- 5:48would say something. But instead we waste time
- 5:52thinking we're more important in somebody else's story than maybe
- 5:55we are. So I'll share a story where I
- 5:59was confronted with the truth. The truth about where I fit in
- 6:02in a friendship. We had shared tons of hours
- 6:06together and tons of stories. We had been there for each
- 6:09other. And so one day when a friend of
- 6:12mine called a mutual friend of ours, she said, I just got a
- 6:16text from our friend. And it was a really weird text,
- 6:20kind of sounds like a farewell text.
- 6:23And she said, and I'm not the only one he sent this to.
- 6:26He sent this to several people we know.
- 6:29What do you think it means? I told her, I don't know, let me
- 6:33check my phone. Let me see if he sent it to me.
- 6:36Seeing that I was one of his closest friends.
- 6:38I figured any minute now I'll get that text.
- 6:42But I didn't. And I said to her, well, he
- 6:46didn't text me. So I can't reach out.
- 6:48I can't try to like join forces and figure out where he is.
- 6:52He doesn't even know that I know that he's going through this,
- 6:55but it sounds like he's reaching out for help and it's scary.
- 7:00You should take it seriously and I'll check in with you to find
- 7:03out what's going on. They ended up doing a welfare
- 7:07check and the police showed up and I guess that got him to snap
- 7:11out of it. When I saw him later that week,
- 7:15I was curious, why didn't I get that text?
- 7:19We were walking and I said what happened the other day and he
- 7:23said it was nothing. Everybody's blowing it out of
- 7:25proportion. And I said you were sending what
- 7:29sounded like farewell text to your friends.
- 7:33I think it sounded kind of serious.
- 7:35He's like, no, I was just being nice, you know, sending well
- 7:39wishes. I was like, that's not what
- 7:42makes people call the cops to check on you.
- 7:45And he downplayed it. And then my curiosity peaked,
- 7:50and I said, I thought I was on your short list of close
- 7:53friends. Yeah, you are.
- 7:56And I said, well, why didn't I get a text?
- 7:59And it's what he said that made me realize my relevance in that
- 8:03friendship. And then I needed to re evaluate
- 8:06it, re evaluate my true role versus my perceived role.
- 8:12And he delivered the truth, his truth in a Riddle.
- 8:17And that's when I saw the con man come out.
- 8:21Then he said you were on my short list.
- 8:24But I didn't start with my short list.
- 8:27I started from the bottom of my long list.
- 8:31I can't remember if my feet stopped in that moment or just
- 8:35my thoughts. I knew he was pleased with his
- 8:38answer. He was kind of grinning as
- 8:42though he had fooled me yet again.
- 8:45But I wasn't fooled. And at that moment I didn't want
- 8:49to talk. I just wanted to go home.
- 8:52Home with this new truth. The truth that maybe I didn't
- 8:56want to see. That maybe my friend's husband
- 9:00was right, that maybe people aren't thinking about us, that
- 9:05were just not that important. I got home and I thought about
- 9:09that situation and other relationships I had and my
- 9:15perceived value versus my actual value.
- 9:19And things started to get a little bit lighter for me.
- 9:22I started to release this notion that we're irreplaceable.
- 9:27I started to realize my place in the collective, kind of like my
- 9:31daughter's place in the play. Everybody's part can be swapped
- 9:36out, so somebody else can be swapped in.
- 9:40I used to think when I'd have food in my teeth or something on
- 9:44my face, that it was somebody else's obligation to tell me
- 9:48that, that that would be the mark of a true and honest
- 9:51friend, somebody that's looking out for you.
- 9:55But then, and I think more and more about what my friend's
- 9:59husband said and his advice to her that nobody's paying
- 10:02attention to you. I thought, what if I've gotten
- 10:06this all wrong? What if I've made having food in
- 10:10your teeth or on your face or something in your hair more
- 10:15relevant than it is? What if you walking around,
- 10:18donning A matcha mustache, if you will, isn't actually a big
- 10:23deal? What if nobody's actually
- 10:26looking or paying that much attention to you?
- 10:29What if the most important person paying attention to you
- 10:32is you, and the other people are just passerby's, and even if
- 10:38they stop and make conversation, they're just kind of noticing
- 10:42all of you, not the sum of your parts.
- 10:46Isn't that a freeing way to think about it?
- 10:48Like nothing's that valuable? I've started to think that what
- 10:54if it's about worrying less, not holding this idea that you've
- 10:58been forgotten about or that you're a victim of somebody else
- 11:01not noticing things or telling you.
- 11:04Like you look in the mirror and you notice that you have spinach
- 11:08between your teeth. Instead of thinking I'm so
- 11:10embarrassed, how could I walk around and nobody tell me this?
- 11:14You instead think, oh I've talked to many people today and
- 11:18nobody noticed so I shouldn't care either.
- 11:21That way of thinking about things, it changes the way you
- 11:26move through the world. Things become easier and when
- 11:31you find out that you're just not that important to somebody
- 11:33like you thought you were or wanted to be, it releases your
- 11:38need to be present for them. Show up when maybe you don't
- 11:42want to. It makes it easier to say no.
- 11:46It takes guilt out of decision making.
- 11:49Like for my daughter, when they removed her part, I don't think
- 11:52that they were trying to make her feel bad.
- 11:55I actually think that they were thinking very little of her.
- 11:58Not in a bad way, not in a she doesn't matter kind of way.
- 12:02But I think that they were more focused on doing what was right
- 12:04for the play. And maybe they thought that
- 12:06giving another person apart would have been beneficial.
- 12:10But it's equally as important that my daughter looked after
- 12:13her own feelings and recognized that she didn't feel so great.
- 12:18I wish she wasn't confused in the moment.
- 12:20I wish she didn't feel let down or slighted.
- 12:24I wish she didn't wonder why did this happen to me and all the
- 12:27thoughts that we can think when these kind of things happen to
- 12:30us. Instead, it might have been fun
- 12:33for her to sit and watch all her friends perform.
- 12:36The pressure was off, she didn't have to worry anymore, she could
- 12:40just enjoy the view. But hopefully when she's a
- 12:43little bit older, she'll release the hold of the little me, the
- 12:48one we've all carried, sometimes too tightly, and the one that's
- 12:53becoming easier to let go of more and more.
- 13:01Thanks for listening. These episodes are unscripted.
