- 0:00So now maximum talking point is happening, how we can really use
- 0:04the AI, how we can really use the gene AI, how we can adopt
- 0:07that particular process. So with that, buzz will be
- 0:09there, but definitely sustainability is one of the
- 0:11important factors. Hello and welcome to the Retail
- 0:25podcast. We're going to have a deep dive
- 0:27with one of the leaders in retail in helping retailers
- 0:32achieve their outcomes. I'm fortunate enough by to be
- 0:35joined by Bhavajit Niyogi from TCS who's Vice President for
- 0:40retail across UK, EMEA and India.
- 0:43So why don't you tell us, why don't we start with, as always,
- 0:46tell us what you do, how is your, what your focus area is.
- 0:51And then right now, because obviously being Vice President,
- 0:55you must meet so many retailers. What's top of mind for 2025?
- 1:00Absolutely. Thanks Alex and thanks for
- 1:02giving me this opportunity to you know participate in your
- 1:05podcast. I've been in TCS for last 30
- 1:07years is a quite long journey and spend over you know 15 years
- 1:12in the States. Then in last 10 years, I am
- 1:14based out of London, almost last 12 years I have been involving
- 1:19in the retail in various different roads.
- 1:21Specifically right now I look up the overall business of the
- 1:25retail as you said in the UK, Europe and EMEA in that
- 1:29particular market including the India geography, so which is a
- 1:33quite diverse geography. And definitely I meet as per my
- 1:36role various different CXO and I go and attend and meet the
- 1:40customer. And as you know that shift in
- 1:43the retail pre pandemic and there's a post pandemic era,
- 1:46right. So pre pandemic used to be quite
- 1:49different than what we see in the post pandemic.
- 1:51But what I am right now, now seeing since, you know, in the
- 1:55beginning of 2024, probably initially we thought after when
- 1:59we came out of pandemic that maybe online will take a big
- 2:02leap in terms of the, you know, retail and the store brick and
- 2:06mortar format will probably shrink down.
- 2:09But surprisingly, it actually came back quite heavily.
- 2:13You know, at the start of 2024, the brick and mortar shopping
- 2:15again quite heavily. It it came out OK.
- 2:18And now I'm seeing every retailers, they are spending
- 2:21huge amount of money in terms of the store transformation.
- 2:24So there's a huge close transformation is happening
- 2:26across the board, whether whether mainly in terms of the
- 2:29pricing, promotions, availability, in terms of
- 2:33merchandising, putting the right things into the right place and
- 2:37more importantly, the customer experience, because customer
- 2:40experience is one of the key important factor.
- 2:42And it is ever changing because even if I compare myself when I
- 2:46and my, you know, kids who are going and shopping, whether be
- 2:49it online or in store, the perspective of that out outlook
- 2:53of the customer, you know, is quite dramatically changing and
- 2:57shifting. So I think 2025 every retailer
- 3:01is having the biggest focus, how they can adopt that change in
- 3:05nature and how they are in a much more agile in terms of
- 3:10making those changes. Because you can't have a two
- 3:13year transformation strategy and by the end of you will see maybe
- 3:17a year one in your transformation.
- 3:18Things got changed, right? So we don't have that luxury
- 3:21anymore that OK, we launch a big transmission programme.
- 3:24So 2025 and probably beyond the next three years, people are
- 3:28looking for how we can be much more faster doing these changes,
- 3:32whether it be it in a supply chain, whether it be it in
- 3:35merchandising, whether it's pricing, promotion, customer
- 3:37loyalty, anything that OK, you can name it.
- 3:40So adopting that change is what is going to drive the strategy.
- 3:44Yeah. Well, I mean just picking up on
- 3:46a couple of themes that you've you've spoken about there in
- 3:49terms of pricing pressure and value driven commerce.
- 3:53Obviously inflation has a had a massive impact on the consumer
- 3:57and on retailers. I was just curious if you had
- 4:01seen examples of how brands are using advanced pricing and agile
- 4:05supply chains to sort of get the right balance between
- 4:08competitive pricing and profitability?
- 4:12Yeah. So if we look at you take the
- 4:16food, groceries retailers, right, So they operate in very
- 4:18thin margin, right. So if they are not super
- 4:21efficient in terms of their supply chain and with the
- 4:24pressure of all this geopolitical pressure, you have
- 4:26seen the war situation in the Europe and and and inflation was
- 4:30quite high even though right now it tapered down.
- 4:33But last 2-3 years, people really focused in terms of the
- 4:37improving their operational efficiency to the supply chain,
- 4:40whether if you have an end to end visibility start right from
- 4:43you're sourcing to you're putting into the stores, there's
- 4:46a huge improvement areas are there for for every retailers
- 4:49matter of fact, right. So every retailers spend right
- 4:52now quite a bit of money in last 2-3 years and continuously
- 4:55evolving with the AI, with the different technologies and it
- 5:01has to be super efficient. And that helps driving their
- 5:04cost down, which will help them for at least the commodity of
- 5:07the goods who have a reasonable price for the people and the
- 5:11consumer. So that's one part, part of the
- 5:14you know process, which is which, which was you know there
- 5:17earlier as well. But it is more important right
- 5:19now that you have to operate into your supply chain process
- 5:22in a much more efficient manner. The second thing which also and
- 5:26and you touched upon is the pricing efficiency and the and,
- 5:29and what level of the right price or the right time that you
- 5:32can push it to your, your, you know, shelf, right.
- 5:35So it has multiple different components in just in a very
- 5:38high level. Are you pricing at the right
- 5:40point based on your localization, based on your
- 5:44availability, based on your market completeness in other
- 5:47dense region? And that intelligence and the
- 5:50dynamic pricing, what we call it is, is very, very important.
- 5:54And that is where a lot of technology, a lot of algorithm,
- 5:57a lot of innovations are happening to have the you using
- 6:00your data set, using your, you know, Geo, you know, landscape,
- 6:04using your customer demographics, using your need of
- 6:07the supply chain. Can you really have that pricing
- 6:11at the right price point now? Then the third component is you
- 6:14may have the price point right. Can I push that price right now
- 6:18in a much more seamless manner to the to each of the shelf,
- 6:21right? Earlier in old days used to be
- 6:23like you do a big thick paper process and then you send it to
- 6:26the store and they'll go to the level and then they will change
- 6:29it, right? So right now those things got
- 6:31completely changed and that is where the digital innovations
- 6:33are happening with the electronic shopping level or
- 6:36other things so that you can just push your pricing, you know
- 6:38then and there. So these are the whole different
- 6:41areas in in three or four different segments.
- 6:43That is what is happening. Okay.
- 6:45I'm just curious in terms of your experience of help trying
- 6:49to help retailers with that, what what do you think are some
- 6:52of the what, what good examples have you seen of this?
- 6:56Are still are people still building it?
- 6:58Yeah, I should say that, yeah, some retailers already adopted
- 7:01the process, whoever started this journey probably three to
- 7:04four years back and some retailers you know in the
- 7:07process of doing it, OK, So they are a little bit doing a cost
- 7:11benefit analysis for a very good example.
- 7:13Like if you go to you know Germany and if you go to the,
- 7:16you know, biggest retailer there, they have already adopted
- 7:19the ESL process. OK, So if I exited just in the
- 7:21Nordics, yes, some retailers already adopted.
- 7:24If you go to the US also, yeah, probably a lot of retailers
- 7:27adopted that. So the adoption process, what
- 7:30you see like it obviously depends on your strategy and the
- 7:33business strategy and what the ROI that you wanted to make it,
- 7:35right. And if some retailers, they may
- 7:38not feel that their price change is so dynamic.
- 7:41So the things are where the ESL will work.
- 7:44Just for an example, I'm telling you where you feel that way.
- 7:47You need to change your price quite frequently so that you can
- 7:50get advantage of it, right? The competitive advantage.
- 7:53But in contrary to that where you think that your price is
- 7:56more or less constant in a week time, OK, and you don't need
- 7:59that advantage or the price advantage is there, then you may
- 8:02not implement those, you know, digital shelf level, right?
- 8:05So these are the different use cases based on which I think, I
- 8:09think retailers are doing, but finding out the right price and
- 8:13the price optimization is every retailer they need it, okay.
- 8:16So it doesn't matter whether it's a small retailer versus
- 8:19large retailer, whether groceries versus Apple versus
- 8:22electronics, everyone need that right pricing and the strategy.
- 8:26I think that is where we are helping as Atcs, we have some
- 8:30unique, you know, capability in the product, which is working
- 8:33well and quite a lot of customers are having that
- 8:36traction in terms of do we have the right, because everyone is
- 8:39having data, right. So everyone is having lots of
- 8:42data. Are we using the right data at
- 8:44the right time to come up with the right price.
- 8:46So that's where I think the the fun is there that OK, how we can
- 8:49use technology, how we can use algorithms, how we can use AI
- 8:52driven, you know, technologies to really come up with those
- 8:55price intelligent pricing, what we call it.
- 8:58How are CMOS seeing ROI from influencer LED retail
- 9:03strategies? I mean, is that something that
- 9:04you can help or you're observing with the CMO part or the
- 9:07marketing part of the business? Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:10I think see there's a traditional term is the retail
- 9:12media network. I'm sure that, you know, a lot
- 9:14of people are interested in it. A lot of retailers are using
- 9:17that Ottoman as one of their, you know kind of strategy and
- 9:21they can, you know, definitely create a good campaign out of
- 9:24it. But obviously the Zenzi kind of
- 9:27category were influenced by as you said rightly, that of the
- 9:30word influenced by several different of this push and
- 9:33pricing and, and how how how the sentiment even others, right.
- 9:36So how you can even look at socially that OK, how it is
- 9:39happening, right. So connecting those different
- 9:42bits and pieces, people are trying, but I have not seen
- 9:45these at the enterprise level in every retailers across the board
- 9:49by the way. But obviously that is one of the
- 9:52area which some of the CMOS are thinking.
- 9:54Some of the large retailers are using it, but it is not in
- 9:58general that every retailer is having that.
- 10:00Strategy. Yeah, I yeah, there's a couple
- 10:03of things obviously from past experience that I see with
- 10:06demand pricing or, you know, elastic pricing.
- 10:10How can you deliver on that if you need free prices during the
- 10:14day, but you don't have electric shelf labels or you're you're
- 10:18dependent on staff to manually go and reprice things?
- 10:22But anyway, that's a conversation for another day.
- 10:24In terms of Omni channel and fulfilment innovation, when we
- 10:27look at retailers redesigning store layouts to be sort of mini
- 10:31fulfilment sensors, how is transforming the customer
- 10:35experience and what role does AI analytics play in fulfilment
- 10:39sort of seamlessly across digital and physical touch?
- 10:42Yeah, I think I think differently that is one of the
- 10:44area a lot of innovation and inventions are going on, right.
- 10:47So true Omni channel experience every retailer wanted to
- 10:51implement and in that, yeah, people are buying online, you
- 10:55know shipping from store or you can buy online, pick up from
- 10:59store. So all those different
- 11:01transformation is going on. And, and if you look at at least
- 11:05even in the UK market, I've seen in the Middle East as well, they
- 11:08are really changing the store layout.
- 11:10If you walk in the store and you have to have a seamless
- 11:13experience, not only just for your shopping experience, but
- 11:16also your checkout experience. You have seen that, OK, how the
- 11:19how the checkout is really doing the evolution, right?
- 11:22So what the traditional, you know, till checkout versus sales
- 11:25checkout versus walk out, walk in, walk out, those type of
- 11:28checkouts and, and you can pick up, you know, that particular
- 11:31part in a seamless manner. I think I think various
- 11:34different, you know, to do that efficiently.
- 11:36There are two three again things in you know, why we are helping.
- 11:39One is obviously you need to have a true Omni channel channel
- 11:42experience in terms of your order fulfilment, right?
- 11:45So order it has to be seamless integration between your
- 11:48whatever back end system that will be used so that the
- 11:50information are readily available.
- 11:52And that is where the AI and the data-driven analytics is
- 11:56helping. And then when you walk in in the
- 11:58store it also sometimes you know I have seen not probably in the
- 12:02apparel, but any other sector in the home improvement area.
- 12:05You may have bought say 5 items you went to the store and you
- 12:08wanted to pick up explore colleagues also come to you.
- 12:11By the way you forgot. I know that if you place this
- 12:13particular order and you may need you these two additional
- 12:16items for you to probably what you are buying.
- 12:20OK. So you can even top up your
- 12:23basket, you can add few items seamlessly and you can give that
- 12:26particular experience back to the customer.
- 12:28I think that is really customers is a wow factor that they are
- 12:31getting it. Now in order to do that you ask
- 12:34them how the technology is helping.
- 12:35So that is where I think the technology is helping immensely
- 12:39and that insight of your actual personal driven experience is
- 12:45what is the aim. So the personalization is one of
- 12:47the big factor, you know, in the retail, right.
- 12:50So can I really go into the personalization when you walk in
- 12:53the store or even you do online shopping so that you have that
- 12:56seamless experience, Who am I when I'm doing the shopping,
- 12:59right. So that is where the lot of
- 13:01innovation is going on and the technology is really technology
- 13:03is really helping there. I got a final question.
- 13:06Sustainability is a competitive advantage obviously in Europe.
- 13:11Obviously the the US and Europe very different in their approach
- 13:16to sustainability. And we've just seen from the new
- 13:18leader what what they're what they're doing over there.
- 13:21But consumers specifically within this market are demanding
- 13:25greater sustainability in retail.
- 13:27How are brands integrating circular circular economy
- 13:31principles or green logistics or eco friendly products into their
- 13:35business models? And do you think regulatory
- 13:38pressure will, will, will will change or speed this up?
- 13:41Yeah, absolutely. See, if I compare obviously
- 13:44three different market, I'm seeing it.
- 13:46Europe is, you know, way ahead right now, right?
- 13:49So absolutely, you know, they, they adopted the process, their
- 13:52ESG standard. Some retailers are really proud
- 13:55about if you go to the Nordics, you know, they have the circle,
- 13:58you know, whole whole concept. They started 2-3 years back and
- 14:02they adopted it. And, and in fact, if you look at
- 14:05it, the Zenzi, you know, category, they are very much,
- 14:08you know, what we call is a conscious about what they buy,
- 14:11right. So they are also looking at it,
- 14:12are these products really, you know, kind of made-up from the
- 14:15sustainable goods. OK.
- 14:17Is there is there way that OK that I can contribute also to
- 14:21that particular cost? So there's a lot of focuses
- 14:23there in the Europe and obviously there are a lot of
- 14:25regulations are there OK, which I'm sure that you know, things
- 14:29as you know, people will fall into the place in UK also
- 14:33there's a good, you know, kind of measure is there in terms of,
- 14:36you know, using the sustainable sourcing of the product.
- 14:39It they declared that part of the sustainable product and
- 14:43people I'm seeing that people are buying that even if that
- 14:46increase your price point in overall matter of the game,
- 14:50right? So it is actually people are
- 14:53adopting that particular process.
- 14:54Obviously in other market is little different, as you said,
- 14:58OK, so we'll we'll we'll watch and see.
- 15:00But sustainable retailing is one of the big focus is there.
- 15:04It was actually the boardroom topic last one year.
- 15:07I have not seen so much in the boardroom topic for the
- 15:09sustainability in an honest manner, but as because maybe
- 15:12that they have already adopted the process and it is BAU, right
- 15:15And or maybe in certain, you know, geography, it may not be
- 15:18that much pressure from a regulation probably is driving,
- 15:21right. So now maximum talking point is
- 15:23happening, how we can really use the AI, how we can really use
- 15:27the GENII, how we can adopt that particular process.
- 15:29Probably that buzz will be there, but definitely
- 15:32sustainability is one of the important factor.
- 15:34Fantastic Abhijit. Thank you so much for giving up
- 15:36your time, the side of the world.
- 15:39I look forward to maybe seeing you at one of the conferences in
- 15:42the UK or in globally, but thank you.
- 15:46Thanks, Alex. Thanks.
- 15:47Thanks for your time as well. Thank you.
