Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / 'I will not be intimidated' Mamdani fires back at Trump threats
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It is election day in America. A year after voters
- 0:03Speaker 1: sent Donald Trump back to the White House, Americans are
- 0:07Speaker 1: once again heading to the polls, and with Trump's popularity
- 0:10Speaker 1: at the lowest since he's been reelected, a number of
- 0:13Speaker 1: key races will reveal a lot tonight about the mood
- 0:17Speaker 1: of the electorate. One of the most closely watched contests
- 0:21Speaker 1: the race to run the nation's largest city. As of
- 0:23Speaker 1: this afternoon, already more than one million people have voted,
- 0:28Speaker 1: and President Trump is trying his best to get Andrew
- 0:32Speaker 1: Cuomo across the finish line. He posted this online today.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Any Jewish person that votes for Zoran Mamdani, a proven
- 0:41Speaker 1: and self professed Jew hater, is a stupid person. Trump
- 0:46Speaker 1: also threatening to pull federal funding for the city if
- 0:48Speaker 1: Mam Donnie wins. This morning, Mam Donnie responded this way.
- 0:54Speaker 2: What we see in the language of Donald Trump is
- 0:58Speaker 2: a premise as if it is decision on whether or
- 1:01Speaker 2: not to fund the city the very money that this
- 1:03Speaker 2: city is owned. And I look forward to utilizing every
- 1:06Speaker 2: single tool at my disposal as the next mayor of
- 1:09Speaker 2: the city to fight for the people of it. But
- 1:11Speaker 2: I will not be intimidated by this President. I will
- 1:13Speaker 2: not be intimidated by anyone because my job here is
- 1:15Speaker 2: to serve the people of.
- 1:16Speaker 1: This Also today, just to the west of New York City,
- 1:21Speaker 1: New Jersey, we'll pick its next governor. The two leading
- 1:24Speaker 1: candidates locked in a close race. If Democrat Mikey Cheryl wins,
- 1:28Speaker 1: it'll be the first time since the nineteen sixties that
- 1:31Speaker 1: the state has elected a governor from the same party
- 1:35Speaker 1: three times in a row. And closer to home here
- 1:39Speaker 1: in Virginia, the race for governor being watched closely as
- 1:42Speaker 1: Democrats try to find their footing and hone in on
- 1:45Speaker 1: what their message is going to be ahead of next
- 1:47Speaker 1: year's midterm elections. We have so much to get to
- 1:50Speaker 1: over the next hour. Let's get off the sidelines and
- 1:52Speaker 1: head into the arena. My panels here and we have
- 1:54Speaker 1: reporters live in New York, Virginia, and New Jersey. And
- 1:59Speaker 1: let's get start. Arted at Mamdanni's HQ where we find
- 2:03Speaker 1: Gloria has minot Gloria. What's the way ist there?
- 2:09Speaker 3: Okay, See, we are inside of Brooklyn Paramount's a Theater.
- 2:12Speaker 3: We are in downtown Brooklyn, and I have to say
- 2:14Speaker 3: it is significant that Mamdani's camp has chosen Brooklyn as
- 2:18Speaker 3: their headquarters tonight, and the reason for that is because
- 2:21Speaker 3: that is the largest and most populous borough in New
- 2:24Speaker 3: York City, and it also has had the largest share
- 2:27Speaker 3: of the voter turnout so far. Now, I've been speaking
- 2:30Speaker 3: with Mamdani's aids throughout the day and they are closely
- 2:33Speaker 3: watching their returns, specifically in Brooklyn, even though this is
- 2:37Speaker 3: not mamdani territory.
- 2:38Speaker 4: So to speak.
- 2:39Speaker 3: He lives in Queens and has represented a Queen's State
- 2:43Speaker 3: Assembly district for the past few years. But they're focused
- 2:47Speaker 3: in Brooklyn, and the reason for that is because this
- 2:49Speaker 3: is where much of Zoram Mamdani's base is, and they
- 2:53Speaker 3: are hoping that turnout is significant in specific areas of Brooklyn,
- 2:58Speaker 3: including areas like four Green, where he made a stop
- 3:01Speaker 3: earlier today alongside with the State Attorney General, Letitia James.
- 3:06Speaker 3: What's referred to as Brownstone. Brooklyn here in New York
- 3:10Speaker 3: City is very much Mam Donnie country, and they're hoping
- 3:13Speaker 3: that if the numbers look good in those precincts, it
- 3:16Speaker 3: means that he is increasing his share of the voter turnout. Now,
- 3:21Speaker 3: as you said in the beginning. Already, this election has
- 3:24Speaker 3: shattered records. More than one million New Yorkers have already
- 3:27Speaker 3: cast their vote. That's already beat the record for the
- 3:30Speaker 3: last mayoral election, and it's beat the record for the
- 3:33Speaker 3: last presidential election, which typically has more voter turnout. Now
- 3:37Speaker 3: we're in the lobby of the Brooklyn Paramount Theater. This
- 3:41Speaker 3: theater has capacity for three thousand people. Mamdani's aides tell
- 3:45Speaker 3: me they expect to fill it tonight. We are hoping
- 3:47Speaker 3: to get inside soon. For now, they are preparing this
- 3:52Speaker 3: venue for what is expected to be a busy and
- 3:56Speaker 3: nerve racking evening. But as we heard it from Mombani
- 3:59Speaker 3: himself earlier today, he is feeling confident, although not complacent,
- 4:04Speaker 3: going into tonight. The campaign just announced they have knocked
- 4:09Speaker 3: on three million doors. So much about any campaign, no
- 4:13Speaker 3: matter where you're running, it is about the ground game,
- 4:17Speaker 3: and no matter how you feel about the candidates, mam
- 4:20Speaker 3: Nani definitely has had the strongest ground game of these
- 4:25Speaker 3: three candidates, and we'll see if it shows this evening. Casey,
- 4:29Speaker 3: all right.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Gloria Pezmuno for us, Thanks very much for that. Now
- 4:32Speaker 1: let's head to Virginia where Brad Todd joins us live
- 4:35Speaker 1: in the arena from Aldi, Virginia. This was a town
- 4:38Speaker 1: that voted for Republican Glenn Younkin in the last governor's race.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Before that, it went for the Democrat, Ralph Northam. Brian
- 4:47Speaker 1: Trump didn't endorse the Republican in this race, and of
- 4:50Speaker 1: course Abigail Spamberger, the Democrat, is the heavy favorite.
- 4:52Speaker 5: What are you hearing, right, Casey? That dynamic is interesting
- 4:58Speaker 5: here because not only did win some earl series the
- 5:00Speaker 5: Republican not get President Trump's endorsement, but the Republican candidate
- 5:04Speaker 5: for Lieutenant Governor John Reid did not get full throated
- 5:07Speaker 5: support from Republican Governor Glenn Younkin, who actually asked Read
- 5:10Speaker 5: to get out of the race. Early in this race,
- 5:13Speaker 5: we are hitting the rush hour surge of voters here.
- 5:15Speaker 5: A bunch of them just came in and this place
- 5:17Speaker 5: has already been packed with activity all day long, almost
- 5:20Speaker 5: a thousand voters coming through this precinct, which is one
- 5:23Speaker 5: of the busiest precincts in Northern Virginia. Our photojournalist Manny
- 5:26Speaker 5: is going to go in ahead of me.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Now.
- 5:27Speaker 5: There are a lot of reasons here why we love
- 5:29Speaker 5: covering elections here in Virginia. One is to show the process,
- 5:32Speaker 5: which I'm going to show you in a second. One
- 5:35Speaker 5: other one is history being made here in Virginia. Manny,
- 5:37Speaker 5: come on over here. I'm going to show you the
- 5:38Speaker 5: ballot here. History is going to be made here in Virginia,
- 5:41Speaker 5: no matter who wins. Because Casey, you were just referring
- 5:43Speaker 5: to it, Abigail Spanberger is on the ticket. No matter
- 5:45Speaker 5: who wins, Abigail Spanberger or win some earl series, Virginia
- 5:49Speaker 5: gets its first female governor as of tonight. Also, Gazala Hajmi,
- 5:55Speaker 5: the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor. If she wins, she
- 5:58Speaker 5: becomes the first Muslim to hold state wide office in
- 6:00Speaker 5: the state of Virginia. So history being made is a
- 6:03Speaker 5: big reason that we're jazzed about being here today. Another reason,
- 6:06Speaker 5: as we walk over here among this line of voters,
- 6:09Speaker 5: in between the voters here, sorry guys, thanks very much.
- 6:13Speaker 5: Another reason we love covering these races is to show
- 6:15Speaker 5: you the process because here in Virginia they have changed
- 6:18Speaker 5: the rules. In years past, they did not let us
- 6:20Speaker 5: into the voting rooms. We had to stay outside and
- 6:23Speaker 5: could maybe peer in from a long distance. Now we
- 6:25Speaker 5: get access, and we can show you voters checking in here.
- 6:27Speaker 5: They're standing in line, they get their paper ballots over there.
- 6:30Speaker 5: They go old school here in Virginia with paper ballots.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Then they go to these voting stations here. There are
- 6:35Speaker 5: nine of them set up, and the voters themselves have
- 6:40Speaker 5: full ownership of their paper ballots. They are the only
- 6:43Speaker 5: ones that can handle them. They're the only ones that
- 6:44Speaker 5: can put them into the counter right there. Another reason
- 6:47Speaker 5: we love covering these races is because we get to
- 6:49Speaker 5: speak to voters in real time about what is really
- 6:53Speaker 5: driving them. Mariam Geradi is a voter we spoke to
- 6:56Speaker 5: just a moment ago. Immigration was first and foremost on
- 6:59Speaker 5: her mind. To take a list.
- 7:02Speaker 4: I always vote since I became a citizen, and that
- 7:06Speaker 4: was twenty years ago, and I migrated from Keny originally.
- 7:11Speaker 4: My family is back home in Kenya, and how I
- 7:14Speaker 4: see how things are going on, like with families being
- 7:20Speaker 4: separated as a human being, as a mother, separating families,
- 7:25Speaker 4: especially children from their mothers or fathers. I don't believe
- 7:30Speaker 4: in that. So that made me come out and also
- 7:34Speaker 4: come and vote.
- 7:38Speaker 5: So that's one big issue. Another one is the government
- 7:41Speaker 5: shut down tens of thousands of government workers live here
- 7:44Speaker 5: in Loudon County. A lot of them told us that
- 7:46Speaker 5: is really driving them to come out to vote today.
- 7:48Speaker 5: Their anger over that. You know, this county, Casey has
- 7:52Speaker 5: just been growing by leafs and bounds. Judy Brown is
- 7:55Speaker 5: the head of the County Board of Elections here in
- 7:58Speaker 5: Louden County. When she first started in the job forty
- 8:00Speaker 5: years ago, there were thirty voting precincts. There are now
- 8:03Speaker 5: one hundred and seven voting precincts here in Louden County.
- 8:06Speaker 5: It has exploded in relevance and importance. That's why the
- 8:09Speaker 5: candidates are here, and that's why they've been really emphasizing
- 8:13Speaker 5: coming here during the campaign.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Okase, Yeah, and Brian, for any of us who actually
- 8:17Speaker 1: live in this area, driving the highway that takes you
- 8:19Speaker 1: to Lodden County will tell you exactly what you just outlined,
- 8:22Speaker 1: which is that it has exploded in population. Brian's Hedd
- 8:25Speaker 1: thank you very much for that reporting.
