- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Big shout out to the writer, Katie DePold.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Um, just comedic genius with the spookiness.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Fun fact, she was actually a writer on Parks and Rec.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Parks and Rec is literally like one of my favorite shows of all time.
- 0:14SPEAKER_03: Yes, big Leslie Nope energy for me.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Big, yeah, Patricia and Leslie Nope in the same room.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine?
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: The world would I be speechless.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: You could imagine that.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: Who's there?
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: It's your killer host.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: I'm Caroline.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: I'm Parker.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: And I'm Ian.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: And welcome to the third episode of our Resurrected.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: We're back.
- 0:53SPEAKER_04: Resurrection.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: This is our miniseries where we're catching up on all of the movies that we missed during our four-year-old every single goddamn one.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: No, that's not true.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: We are catching up on our favorites, and stay tuned for our least favorites in the next episode.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: So I love a little negative Nancy.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: Keep that feed followed.
- 1:19SPEAKER_03: We've missed you all so much since our last episodes in 2022.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: So we had to do this little series to say, welcome back.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: We know you've missed us.
- 1:30unknown: Of course.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: And we've missed you too.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: So here's everything.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: Drastically.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: Today we are not talking about theatrical releases, the big boys.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: We talked about that last month.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: What are we talking about?
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: We are talking about everything else.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: Streaming.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: Thank God.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: TV.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: Video games.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: Horrors everywhere.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: Movies, etc.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: Well, movies, yeah.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: Game parks.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: So we're gonna get into all the little things that we've watched here and there.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: And you guys, people might notice these are kind of like the big popular things.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: If you're listening, you think, God, these guys are basic.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: We've lost our edge a little bit over the past few weeks.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: We might be a little basic.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: I think our community needs to whip us back into shape.
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: So I think email us at scary moviepod at gmail.com, DM us on Instagram at Scarymoviepod, and give us your recommendation for what we missed, what we need to catch up on, what we might even need to review in one of our future episodes.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: If you'd like to fax us, you can reach us at TitskidMod.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: So do all of that.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: And now let's get into our favorite non-theatrical major horror releases.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm so glad you asked because I have one burning to be released and talk about on this podcast.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: And we are gonna we're gonna let you go first.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: Okay, great.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: Because of feminism.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: I thank you so much.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: My two men on mics.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Um so I want to talk about Widow's Bay because this is I think one of the most unique things that I have watched in a very long time.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: I laugh, I cry, I'm scared, I'm freaked out, I'm getting bad dreams about it.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, so enjoyable and just such a unique niche of everything that I love from a TV show.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: If you have not watched Widows Bay, it is about a spooky little island town that is the next Martha's Vineyard.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: Martha's Vineyard.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Tourism hub of the next Martha's Vineyard.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: It follows the unique, quirky little characters that live on this island that are promoting it, but there's a little history behind it, a little spookiness, a little eeriness.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: Caroline, as our resident woman, Matthew Reese, who plays the mayor.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: Smash or pass?
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: It's a pass for me.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: Okay, well, I didn't ask that to like I thought it was gonna be a smash.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: Matthew Reese.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: Are you trying to tell a woman?
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: No, I'm just saying I'm sorry to Matthew Reese because I thought this was going to be like a smash.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: It's a pass.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: He gives me the ick a little bit.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: We don't need to keep digging.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: But I I love his um passion for widows pay.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: You know, I I was like, this is a politician, this is a classic politician trying to spend something for gain.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: See, I think that's why he gives me the ick a little bit.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's avoiding safety.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: You want that of a mayor of a small town that is trying to promote them, you know?
- 4:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Um I have to give a quick shout-out.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: My favorite show, my favorite character is Patricia.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Patricia.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Incredible.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: I there are just there are so many episodes that I could go in depth and talk about, but um, I will, I do want to give a shout out to the writers.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Two shout outs.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: Two shout-outs already.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Did I say another?
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Shout out to Patricia.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: We are on the show.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Shout out, Patricia.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I have some I have some shout-outs to give.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Big shout-out to the writer, Katie DePold.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Um, just comedic genius with the spookiness.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Fun fact, she was actually a writer on Parks and Wreck.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And that makes a hundred percent sense.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: For the concept of Widows Bay is actually the content that got her that job on Parks and Wreck.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Parks and Wreck is literally like one of my favorite shows of all time.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: Yes, big Leslie Nope energy for me.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Big, yeah, Patricia and Leslie Nope in the same room.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine?
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Oh, oh the world would speechless.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: You could imagine that.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: I just incredible.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: It's kind of like we're at Sunset Cocktails with Patricia right now.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Oh, that was just ironic, someone please buy me that.
- 6:03unknown: Yeah.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: Or like it's kind of like the bear, but better.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: Hmm.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: What I loved about Widows Band is that I watched the first episode and I like didn't this it kind of came out of nowhere for me.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: And I didn't know that it was going to be funny.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: I thought it was going to be pure spooky.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: Same.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: So at first I was kind of like, huh.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: The energy is not what I was expecting.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Well, you're like afraid to laugh.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: It really grew on me.
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: Really, like that, that kind of like, like you said, quirkiness.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: Quirky.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: I don't know if anybody's ever described anything as quirky before.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Um I mean Eek, what can I say?
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: I liked it.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: I just thought like you had to know that if you know, you know, that's Widow's Bay.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: You know, you know what it reminded me of when we first started watching that I thought it was gonna be and it wasn't, was that other Netflix series where they're kind of on an island and then there's like that religious kind of church thing.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: Mightn't be.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: I thought it was something like that, and then it was not amazing show.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: Also amazing.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: What year was that?
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: Oh, a great year.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was a perfect year.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: Some would say the best year.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: Well, it's funny that we're talking about Widows Bay, which is an Apple TV show.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: Midnight Mass, a Netflix show.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: My pick, my first pick of this round was just horror TV of the past four years.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: I feel like, and I am on record in our previous iteration of what's your favorite scary movie, saying that I felt like horror TV was flopping because keeping up the tension, the suspense, right, the scares over the course of a season.
- 7:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, difficult.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: And then look at the past four years proving me wrong.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Widow's Bay, amazing.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: Amazing.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: Midnight Mass.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: Stunning.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: Did either of you watch It Welcome to Dairy on HBO Max?
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: You texted me and told me to multiple times, and we didn't.
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: I thought I loved it.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: I actually think a lot of people didn't love it necessarily, but I loved it.
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: It was basically like uh the book, It, which is on our shelf over here, which took me two years to read.
- 8:17SPEAKER_03: Fat book.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: It like takes place through the tragedies of the town of Derry through different decades.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: There's a specific period of time.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: And what we see in the movie, it takes place in the 90s.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: Here I'm gonna out myself as not knowing.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: Uh, this one takes place in like the 50s, the 60s, something like that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: And it really changes kind of the mythology of it.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: People thought they really knew it.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: And by the end of it, you kind of discover a new function of Pennywise the Clown.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: So it's kind of a new set of kids all being terrorized by Pennywise.
- 8:54SPEAKER_03: I thought really scary, really emotionally resonant, showing things from the book that I was anticipating, but in new ways.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: And now they're going to do more seasons that go further into the past.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: And I was like, oh, that's gonna suck.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: We already know what happens in however many years.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: You just wait.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: There's lore.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: You go watch.
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: Did y'all watch Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen on Netflix?
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: No.
- 9:18SPEAKER_03: Well, let me tell you, the first episode I watched something is very bad through my fingers.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: It was one of the scariest things I've ever seen.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: Every other episode in the season, not as scary as the first one, but very intriguing.
- 9:30SPEAKER_03: So go watch that.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: Did you watch The Burbs on Peacock?
- 9:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: Loved The Burbs.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: Kiki Palmer being hilarious.
- 9:40SPEAKER_03: She's a new mom who's just bur moved to like white suburbia.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: And it's there's kind of like she thinks her neighbor is a murderer.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: And there's kind of like comedy.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: It's not very scary, but like there's a good mystery at the center.
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: And they're juggling a lot of kind of taboo themes.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: Themes that like people would be like, oh, classes in session, woke.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: But I think in very engaging and entertaining ways.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: Did you watch Hysteria Exclamation Point on Peacock?
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: You're really educating us right now.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: Really good.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: Limited series uh about satanic panic in the 80s, a kid who loves like metal in a metal band, and they all think he's from the devil and responsible for some mergers.
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: Did you watch Teacup on Peacock?
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: Educating us.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: A great James Wan show.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: Very intriguing.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: James Wan.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: I will say ends on a cliffhanger and canceled.
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: So the first season is still good, but it is frustrating.
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: Did you watch Interview with the Vampire on AMC?
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, you're really outing us right now.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: Gay.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: It's like we're it's like we're back trying to be convinced again.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: Gay vampires.
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: I have to like get less and less information because we we've got to move on.
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: But I think this has been an amazing robust time for horror television.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Well, you just sold me with that big long list.
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: There's more coming.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: There's some that I hear is not great.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: The shards on the shards on Hulu, the new Ryan Murphy uh adaptation of a Brady Stanell's book, I've heard is not so great.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: So you can't win them all.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: Well, may I?
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: You oh you may kind of coming over to the documentary side a little bit because you can have horror and documentary style stuff all at the same time.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: I'm a sucker for a documentary.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: So any type of regular documentary style or a genre that meets kind of horror, eerie, or scary.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: And that is what we get with squatters.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: Get the floor.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: We'll practice it a little bit.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: It's about basically any time that a homeowner potentially loses their home to squatters that get in there when they're gone from their home.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: This is a documentary?
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: It's a documentary series.
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: And it is especially eerie because we just bought a home and there was a gap between not moving into our house that really scared us about losing our home of these creepy squatters that ruin your house and just terrorize and take you to court.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: And it's scary.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: I've never even heard of it.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: Where is the streaming?
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: I think it's Hulu.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: I'm pretty sure it's Hulu.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: This is one of those things that Ian finds.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: He watched the whole thing by himself.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: I did not participate in watching this.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: It's not your thing.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: It's not my thing.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: And then for like a week afterwards, he was like, Did you know that this, this, and this, and people can get in your house?
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: And when he says there was a gap of time before we moved in, there was one night.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: That's all it takes.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: It's all takes a few days.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: One night where the house sat empty, and he the next day he was like, We have to get to the house.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: There might be squatters in there.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: It only takes one day.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: I'll let you guys watch the rest, but very eerie.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: And going with that same documentary.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Streaming on Hulu.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: Streaming on Hulu.
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: Um this one, A24.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, I believe.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: Neighbors.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: Neighbors, uh, I think is a very popular show.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: HBO, correct me if I'm wrong.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: HBO Max, yeah.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: HBO Max.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: Um, stunning work by that team.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: Stunning work.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: Um, I watched a kind of uh interview of the um uh the director and the cinematographer on that, and they were talking about how they found people for the series, and they literally went and went on Craigslist still in this modern era and found just the the most bizarro neighbors.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: And and for context, basically every episode is two different neighbors uh having some type of skirmish or issue, and it can go anywhere from being like a very menial thing, like the yard line, you know, property line, to, you know, things more malicious than that and eerie.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: And I think one of the things I'm terri like terribly scared about is having a really bad neighbor.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: We've looked at homes that had like um, you know, really scary neighbors, and scary.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: We we didn't go with them.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: Whoa.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: And so um, yeah, totally love the series.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: It was beautifully done, uh, but had a really eerie undertone to them.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: I watched one episode and I was too stressed to continue.
- 14:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: I am scared of just talking to my neighbors at my last abode when I was still living in New York.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: My backyard neighbor, so not to the sides but behind, had people come and cut down a tree that was, I thought, too close to the property line.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: It was on their property, so whatever.
- 14:39SPEAKER_03: But the tree fell into our yard.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: No.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: And so I had to muster every ounce of strength because I'm a he hates conflict.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah I had to go out there and I stood hands on my hips in the yard and looked at them.
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: And this guy was like, Is that your yard?
- 15:00SPEAKER_03: I was like, Yes, no, I'm just standing here with my hands on my hips.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: He said, Oh, I don't remember.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: I was probably wearing my clogs.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: And I was like, careful.
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: I bet I hope no, no, no.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: What did I say?
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: I said something good.
- 15:20SPEAKER_03: I was like, careful.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: I hope so.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: Because I better not see another tree fall into my backyard.
- 15:27SPEAKER_03: Well, what happened to the tree that was in your eye?
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: That Parker brought.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: And I sat, I set up, I went to my window, my house, and I set up my phone to record them as they saw down the entire tree so I'd have evidence.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: That's good.
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: You see, you're learning.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: And they did not let the next tree fall in my yard.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: Caroline, what else?
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: What else do you have on the noggin over there?
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: I have a couple couple contenders.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: I am a little basic, and I asked if I could bring White Lotus or Severance to the table.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: I think both are very suspenseful.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: I think it counts personally.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Which season of White Lotus?
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: I think they're all kind of suspenseful.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: And they were all out when we were gone.
- 16:11SPEAKER_03: Which one would be your pick?
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: If you had to smash one and slash the other two.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: I can't slash any of them.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: I can't really disrespect my man Mike White like that.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: Definitely see.
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: It's gotta be Italy, yeah.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: Peppa Pig.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: That was a good one.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: They were all good though.
- 16:29SPEAKER_03: You say this as if there was negative energy towards you bringing those to the table.
- 16:33SPEAKER_03: We were very open.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, all right.
- 16:35SPEAKER_03: We're very accepting here.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, White Lotus is like instant classic.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: I think everyone loves it.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Severance, though, you have not watched.
- 16:41SPEAKER_03: No.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Dressful gorgeous.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: I think he hasn't watched it for the reason why it is so I love it.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: Allowed to be in the times here to talk about it.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: I have so many questions and I cannot wait for answers, hopefully.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: Um I'm asking this genuinely.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: What is that show about?
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Okay, so there is a company that exists in this like semi-futuristic world where they offer you to um get a ch a chip in your head.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: So when you go to work, you actually become a different personality.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Um, so your experience as a worker is you go into the building and then the next thing you know, you're done with work and you're walking back out.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: Gorgeous.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: But they're the it's kind of like a black mirror-y kind of thing that the person, your innie inside of work, they call them innies and out of the way.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but your your innie is its own personality.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: So when you quit that job and they remove the chip, your innie dies.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: So then it's like this whole conflict of like, am I actually killing them?
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: And then the innies kind of self-realize and they're like, we can't let them do that to us.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: And there's like a whole back and forth.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: But I think just a beautiful commentary on work conditions, capitalism, capital, yes.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Like you're basically like farming out workers if they are their own entities.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: And is it positioned as a horror story for the inner inneries?
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't say horror, but like there's definitely like a suspenseful dark lore behind it, and we're kind of like, you're hearing about like the founders of this company and their methodology, and there's something about goats that we haven't all really figured out yet.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: And um someone out there's probably figured it out.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Sheep.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Are they sheep?
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: I think is there another season coming soon?
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, I can't relate.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: I did not know that.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: They left us on a cliffhanger.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: It was quite an ending.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: So good.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: I recommend it, but it is one of those kind of not psychological, but yeah, it's psychological.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: Psychological, like sounds like it.
- 18:55SPEAKER_03: I'm thinking a lot right now.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: Gotta watch it.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: Before I give mine, thoughts on my bow.
- 19:01SPEAKER_03: Ooh.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Also, this hair.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: This luscious hair.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Definitely a smash.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: Um, it's kind of giving founding father.
- 19:12unknown: Oh yeah.
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, don't ruin it.
- 19:16SPEAKER_03: Or a Samantha American girl doll.
- 19:19SPEAKER_03: Washington's men.
- 19:20SPEAKER_03: I've really been through a journey, a hair journey.
- 19:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: Very tightly cropped in our original.
- 19:26SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: Callback to Reddell and Hansel.
- 19:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, if you look at that original photo from back in the time, on our Instagram, we've all been through a journey.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: Our hair has gotten longer.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: Mine's your hair has gotten shorter.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: You've all gone in the opposite.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: And in that photo, in that headshot I used, I was shirtless.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: And now I would never be shirtless.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: Never shirtless on the internet.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: Um, you've changed.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: I think we all look good though.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: I'm thank you.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: I'm going to cheat again for my pick.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: Last time I picked all of horror on television, I'm sure there was some bad stuff and I didn't watch it.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: Uh I'm now going to pick.
- 20:09SPEAKER_03: I have been fascinated by the influence of horror in pop music.
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: He's going deep.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: It kind of started, of course.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: This is not going to be a deep cut, but Sabrina Carpenter was putting these kind of slasher type images in her music videos for taste and tears.
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: Recently, you might have seen the music video for Ariana Grande's Petal.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: Some chainsaw action.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: Spoiler.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: In that one.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: So these horrific things.
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: Then my queen, my bestie.
- 20:45SPEAKER_03: I don't know her.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: I wish.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: But close personal friend.
- 20:48SPEAKER_03: Lady Gaga, my fave.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: She, and I'm wearing a Lady Gaga mayhem tour t-shirt as evidence.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: Her whole last album was like gothic vampire vibe.
- 21:00SPEAKER_03: And if you went to the tour, the mayhem ball, which I did, and bought a t-shirt out, the whole thing was themed as like this Phantom of the Opera, gothic opera.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: And there was like a storyline to the show where she was literally doing battle with her inner self for murder that happens in this show.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: And it was beautiful, lots of blacks and reds and long drapey capes.
- 21:30SPEAKER_03: She comes out to sing in a gigantic multi-story high cage skirt.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: The skirt opens up.
- 21:41SPEAKER_03: Dancers inside breaking out.
- 21:44SPEAKER_03: It was gorgeous.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: She even, as mentioned in Phantom of the Opera, gets in a little canoe, ferry.
- 21:51SPEAKER_03: What would you call this?
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: And somebody paddles her through while she sings Shallow.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: Not my favorite song.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: I don't love that song.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: But this album, you've got zombie.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Boy, you've got the beast, you've got Killa, you've got obviously the ones you know, Abracadabra, uh, disease.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: A lot of horror influence in this, and I loved it.
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: And then to bring it back to the big screen, did either of you see Mother Mary?
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: I feel like I have at this point by how much you've talked about.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: He literally has brought it up every day.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: Let me tell you about Mother Mary.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, let's do it.
- 22:27SPEAKER_03: So, Mother Mary, Anne Hathaway, Michaela Cole, directed by David Lowry of The Green Knight.
- 22:34SPEAKER_03: Did you see The Green Knight?
- 22:35SPEAKER_04: No.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: Gorgeous.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: Gorgeous.
- 22:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, this was a theatrical release, but Anne Hathaway is Mother Mary a pop star.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: And it is this beautiful movie, very quiet and still for a while, and then it's crazy and beautiful by the end, kind of about the uh origins of artistry and persona and her relationship to her collaborators and female friendship and what you give versus what's taken from you.
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: Ah! It's gorgeous.
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: And alongside the release of this movie, which this movie I would give a high rating, but would not be like my highest smash ever.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: The album puts it over the edge.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: It looks beautiful.
- 23:17SPEAKER_03: So they put an album called Mother Mary Greatest Hits.
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: And it's supposed to like trick you into thinking there's a real artist who has put out these songs, and these are her best songs, produced by Jack Antonoff, Charlie XCX, FKA Twiggs.
- 23:31SPEAKER_03: Really amazing songs.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: There are like seven, I think.
- 23:35SPEAKER_03: I put up this.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: That's a seven really fabulous songs.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: She Anne Hathaway is going to be my Spotify artist of the year on my rap.
- 23:45SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 23:45SPEAKER_03: I'm not kidding.
- 23:45SPEAKER_03: I have listened to hundreds of times.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: I'm telling you, my top five songs will all be Mother Mary.
- 23:52SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: I have been obsessed.
- 23:54SPEAKER_03: My mouth is lonely for you.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: Amazing song.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: What a title.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: Holy Spirit.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: Burial.
- 24:03SPEAKER_03: This black suit fits like a glove.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: We're gonna get copyrighted strike.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: Well, because I sound just like her.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: So you have to check it out.
- 24:11SPEAKER_03: I got this on vinyl, as Ian mentioned.
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: It's beautiful.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: There's like gold in laid into it.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: Is it kind of uneven like paint in there in the center, or is it like dripping or something?
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: Yes, the actual disc is gold, and then there's like a kind of blob.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: Like a wax.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: Is it a wax?
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: It looks like a wax seal, but it's like in the disc.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: And it's iridescent, the red, gold.
- 24:35unknown: Man.
- 24:36SPEAKER_03: Oh I could talk about this all day.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: I love Mother Mary.
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: Um, so there you go.
- 24:44SPEAKER_03: I think Anna Hathaway should ask for the rights to Mother Mary and actually like start a music career, a pop career off this.
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: I listened to two other podcasts because spoilers, I love podcasts and I love movie podcasts where they were like, movies about pop stars.
- 24:57SPEAKER_03: Like you just never believe it.
- 24:58SPEAKER_03: Who would actually listen to these songs?
- 25:04SPEAKER_03: Me.
- 25:05SPEAKER_03: Me.
- 25:06SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 25:07SPEAKER_03: Anyway.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: Um wait, wait.
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: Actually, real fast.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: I need a live reaction to this.
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: Thoughts on what you just saw?
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: We just watched Anna Hathaway perform Burial for Mother Mary.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: Stunning.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Um, I think I don't know when they started production for this movie, but I feel like the world is primed with the amount of talk about the Eras tour right before.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: I went pretty deep into the lore of Taylor Swift over the past couple years.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: What Anne?
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: Well, what's what's the lore?
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: I just there's just a lot of content out there about like theories on her and her songs and the relationships, and it's just uh very interesting.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: How many podcasts do you think there are about that?
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, so many.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: Should we leave it?
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: I'm out, I'm out.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: It was a fun couple episodes.
- 26:06SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 26:06SPEAKER_03: Um, so Ian, I think you have one more for us, right?
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: Handmade, hands made I never handmaids.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: No, it's handmaid's tale.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: Um, this is something I resisted for the longest time.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: I don't know why.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: I think I just it was one of those that like the thumbnail was something not interesting to me for whatever reason.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: Um, but you started watching it.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: I started it while he was out of town because I was like, today's the day I'm gonna become a woman.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: And uh how fitting is not what I learned my history.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: And I think you were a couple episodes in, maybe half a season in.
- 26:45SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 26:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:45SPEAKER_02: Um, and then I finally sat down and started watching.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: I was like, this is brilliant.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: Um, fun fact one of my favorite series of all time.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: Probably uh I can attribute a lot of my career to probably wanting to get into advertising, was Mad Men.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: Um, not because of the like, you know, oppressive stuff, just because the time and it was a really cool series, and it was fun to do.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: Don Draper is actually very problematic.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: Very problematic.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: Uh I bet that's a hot topic.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: Peggy Olson.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: Peggy Olson, better known as Elizabeth Moss, obviously main character energy in Handmaid's Tale, does a stunning job.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: She does well at basically anything she does.
- 27:21SPEAKER_02: So uh no notes.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, but great series.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: Um, it is now done.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: I just looked it up.
- 27:28SPEAKER_03: Six seasons.
- 27:29SPEAKER_03: I would have guessed there'd been a hundred.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: They're they're very long.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: We shotgun the crap out of those.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: And we watched it all in the months of January and February.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: It was a very dark time.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there was never a happy moment in our household.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: Not one laugh, not one, dare I say, bright moment.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: The whole series is very literally visually dark.
- 27:52SPEAKER_03: I have not watched it.
- 27:53SPEAKER_03: I watched the pilot when it first came out.
- 27:56SPEAKER_03: I remember being like, oof, not for me.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: It is it's so good though.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Like you just I I think if everyone in the world, this is my hot take.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: If everyone in the world watched Handmaid's Tale, we would have less conflict.
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: So if Don Draper watched Handmaid's Tale, he would have a new take.
- 28:19SPEAKER_03: Any other Don's you can think of who could learn from that?
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: I think there's a couple.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: Just a few white men with a mic.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: With a mic.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: I was talking about the president.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: Every I don't want to bring him on to this show.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: Every man who has ever thought about starting a podcast to pause, watch Handmaid's Tale, and then decide if you want to start a podcast.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: Says the people that started a podcast.
- 28:43SPEAKER_03: So I will see y'all in another four years for this podcast.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: Because that's how long it's gonna take me to go watch that show.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: Am I allowed to say one more hot take?
- 28:53SPEAKER_03: We're dropping them.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: It's gotta be burning.
- 28:55SPEAKER_03: Drop it like it's hot.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: Frankenstein?
- 28:57SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: Am I allowed to say that one?
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: Am I stealing anyone's thunder here?
- 29:01SPEAKER_03: No, I'm done.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: Um, that's the last one.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: I'll I'll put a bow on that.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: Del Toro is uh ever since Shape of Water, I've loved watching Del Toro.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: Ian bought one of those Shape of Water dildos.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Wait, what?
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: Oh, this was all this we can't get off on it.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Oh, I need to finish up the frame.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: Oh, he's going for it.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: But I just I love like um I'll send you a link.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: Uh different episode we talk about, obviously obsession, but um going on the complete opposite spectrum of budget and pulling no stops.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: He built a literal ship and put it on a gimbal and moved the gimbal, like that's insane.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: And I I just love the extremes where he just took it to the extreme and it was it was amazing.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: Mia Goth in that movie.
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: Amazing.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, beautiful costume.
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: Yes, the costumes, the colors.
- 29:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, I took a note from Ian's old book and I napped through that movie.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: But you're saying I didn't watch the whole thing, I fell asleep.
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: All right, you guys, you guys.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: Us guys.
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: Hot takes.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: All right, well, this has been a thrill and a pledge to talk about the non-theatrical horror releases, horror adjacent for some of them, of the past four years that have really been buzzing around our brains.
- 30:22SPEAKER_03: So I'm gonna be sad for this episode to be over, but alas.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: Thank you to Max Friedman, our editor, and thank you for watching.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: I'm Ian.
