- 1:13Speaker 3: on Fridays. It is our favorite day of the week
- 1:16Speaker 3: because we get the team together to celebrate you our
- 1:18Speaker 3: incredible She's on the Money community. Miss Jess Gricci is
- 1:23Speaker 3: going to be sharing our favorite money wins Beck is
- 1:25Speaker 3: away again, so I'm going to be sharing this week's
- 1:27Speaker 3: bre tips and we'll be helping to answer a money dilemma,
- 1:31Speaker 3: which is all about being the quote financially responsible one
- 1:34Speaker 3: in a relationship and something that you slid into our
- 1:37Speaker 3: dms about this week, your sibling Cape's getting caught up
- 1:41Speaker 3: in something that is giving MLM vibes and we all
- 1:45Speaker 3: know how I feel about EMLM, so I cannot wait
- 1:48Speaker 3: to get into that. Before we get there, though, Miss
- 1:50Speaker 3: Jessic GRICI, how was the week that was? It's lovely?
- 1:53Speaker 4: I wanted to do Last night I went and saw
- 1:55Speaker 4: the new Fantastic Four, which was great, very much.
- 1:58Speaker 3: I ran into back how funny? Oh, I feel like
- 2:00Speaker 3: I got that invite as well? About you would have
- 2:03Speaker 3: got that.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I was doing this so jess got it through
- 2:06Speaker 4: work apparently you but it's so funny. We walked in
- 2:09Speaker 4: James night. We were a little bit late and then
- 2:11Speaker 4: I just yeah, Jessica Rickie, and I'm.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Like, where is this voice coming over? And I was
- 2:16Speaker 3: back in jest. It was so funny, so cute. I
- 2:19Speaker 3: really wanted to go, but at the moment, I feel
- 2:22Speaker 3: like I'm really having to balance my social like yeah,
- 2:25Speaker 3: what I'm doing socially because I feel not guilty, but
- 2:29Speaker 3: I just don't have the energy. Like tonight we're going
- 2:32Speaker 3: out for drinks. Yes, you and I are going out
- 2:34Speaker 3: for drinks with our Amazon family, which will be really fun.
- 2:38Speaker 3: But I was like, I cannot back that up. But
- 2:40Speaker 3: I cannot do a movie premiere and then like after
- 2:42Speaker 3: work drinks. I'm sorry, that's too much for me. Yeah,
- 2:45Speaker 3: and also OK, here I feel rude being like to
- 2:47Speaker 3: my husband, you've got the baby two nights in a rob.
- 2:51Speaker 1: In a week.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Not of rude. But anyway, as we've been it's been good.
- 2:56Speaker 3: I've got work drinks tonight with Amazon, which honestly sounds
- 2:59Speaker 3: really fa Nancy, but honestly will be so nice because
- 3:02Speaker 3: most of the Amazon team, and this is I don't
- 3:04Speaker 3: know why I'm telling you this, maybe you'll find it
- 3:06Speaker 3: interesting actually based in Sydney, and so many of our
- 3:09Speaker 3: other brand partners are based in Sydney as well. So
- 3:11Speaker 3: whenever they do like, oh, into Financial Year drinks or whatever,
- 3:15Speaker 3: usually Jess, you and I have to be like, oh,
- 3:17Speaker 3: thanks for the invite, but we are in Sydney and like,
- 3:19Speaker 3: we don't have the capacity to just fly up. So
- 3:21Speaker 3: I think it'll be so nice. And I know that
- 3:23Speaker 3: there are going to be probably a lot of other
- 3:25Speaker 3: faces that we know there tonight, so that'll be good.
- 3:28Speaker 3: But yeah, I'm gearing up. I'm off to Bali soon,
- 3:31Speaker 3: so I am going. Yeah, just a little bit nuts
- 3:34Speaker 3: with packing already, like getting my stuff together, ordering out,
- 3:38Speaker 3: Oh my goodness. Yeah. And it's like winter. Yeah, and
- 3:41Speaker 3: I've been trying to find baby swimsuits so painful. Yeah. Anyway,
- 3:45Speaker 3: I got one on eBay, so money win. Love that
- 3:48Speaker 3: money win. So I was thinking, would you like a
- 3:52Speaker 3: five star review before we get into your break tips?
- 3:54Speaker 3: Honestly they are my absolute favorites. So this one this
- 3:58Speaker 3: week comes from Reread, and she says, I wanted to
- 4:01Speaker 3: write this review to say thank you for the big
- 4:03Speaker 3: impact your podcast has had on my finances and on
- 4:06Speaker 3: my life. I used to be an absolute mess when
- 4:09Speaker 3: it came to saving and spending, but now I finally
- 4:12Speaker 3: have a budget, a healthy emergency fund, and even I'm
- 4:15Speaker 3: investing in chares. Please never stop making this show. I've done.
- 4:22Speaker 3: I just love when you guys are like I have
- 4:25Speaker 3: my shit together and I'm like, how good does that feel?
- 4:28Speaker 3: Naps for you Cuenqueen. All right, keeping up the good vibes,
- 4:33Speaker 3: missjss GRICI, what money wins? Some confessions are you bringing
- 4:36Speaker 3: to us this week? From the group? All right? This week?
- 4:39Speaker 4: Firstly one from Lauren, who said I got audited by
- 4:42Speaker 4: the ETO, but I was great. I didn't lie on
- 4:45Speaker 4: anything and I just ended up owing them thirty nine
- 4:47Speaker 4: dollars for a simple mistake that she'd made, but the
- 4:50Speaker 4: ATO decided to wave it and cancel the audit.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Sorry, what unheard of? Who did you sleep with the adal?
- 4:59Speaker 3: But that's where you get for being a good person?
- 5:01Speaker 3: Did not want to go return. Sorry. If you're always
- 5:03Speaker 3: just being a good person, good things are going to happen.
- 5:06Speaker 4: I completely agree. Next, I've got a money in from Anya,
- 5:09Speaker 4: who said money win. I received a big dividend payment
- 5:12Speaker 4: from Shares's, which I then reinvested into my shares account.
- 5:16Speaker 3: And she also found a fifteen dollars disc on Facebook Marketplace.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Isn't that so good? It was like dividend payment time
- 5:22Speaker 3: at the start of this month. Yeah, And I like
- 5:25Speaker 3: posted a screenshot to my stories. I was like, maybe
- 5:28Speaker 3: it's a dividend season. I had like all these little
- 5:31Speaker 3: notifications for all my ETFs and it was like, you
- 5:33Speaker 3: just got paid thirty cents and I was like, thanks,
- 5:36Speaker 3: and I will take it and I will be happy
- 5:38Speaker 3: for it.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Next, I've got a money in from Anita who said
- 5:41Speaker 4: he he I hacked in quotes my teen daughter's Instagram
- 5:45Speaker 4: account and followed she's on the money now so she
- 5:47Speaker 4: has inspiring financial tips from awesome role models popping up
- 5:51Speaker 4: in her feet. I love you, and honestly, we SHO
- 5:53Speaker 4: didn't actually hack it because in quotation marks, I.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Think she just was cheeking lock. Also like, sorry, if
- 5:58Speaker 3: you leave your phone unlocked on the bench, I think
- 6:01Speaker 3: that's fair game to follow me. I completely agree, and
- 6:04Speaker 3: thanks for the follow We really appreciate it.
- 6:06Speaker 4: A Next, I've got a money from Delia, who said
- 6:10Speaker 4: she used our prompt to get discounts on her phone
- 6:13Speaker 4: bill and her car insurance and she's been shopping smart
- 6:16Speaker 4: with Woolli's and now has sixty dollars of rewards banked
- 6:19Speaker 4: towards Chris Money.
- 6:20Speaker 3: When I was actually having a conversation in my DMS
- 6:23Speaker 3: this week with someone who was like, oh, Vy, you
- 6:26Speaker 3: keep saying that you need to renegotiate like your mortgage
- 6:29Speaker 3: rate and just call your bank up and see if
- 6:30Speaker 3: you can get a better deal. But like, I'm so stumped,
- 6:32Speaker 3: Like I'm so bad at like advocating for myself. And
- 6:35Speaker 3: I was like, do you know that there are prompts
- 6:36Speaker 3: on our website, Like we have a whole e book
- 6:39Speaker 3: that you can download for free that basically has a
- 6:41Speaker 3: script on what to say and what to plug in
- 6:44Speaker 3: and how to get a better deal exactly. She was like, Victoria,
- 6:47Speaker 3: this is exactly what I was looking for. Twenty minutes
- 6:50Speaker 3: later a message I got a discount exactly, I.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Sing, we're poppling to that in the show notes if
- 6:55Speaker 4: you want to get yourself a better deal too, just
- 6:57Speaker 4: like Delia did. Next, I've got a money win from Rose,
- 7:01Speaker 4: who said she did her tax return and she's realized
- 7:04Speaker 4: that over the past five years her income has increased
- 7:06Speaker 4: by forty thousand dollars.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Sorry, is it?
- 7:10Speaker 4: And I'm assuming that's just like, you know, a little
- 7:12Speaker 4: bit each yar over those years. She's, yeah, so look
- 7:16Speaker 4: at where you've come from, because I think sometimes in
- 7:18Speaker 4: our journey we can forget like what we've done, and
- 7:21Speaker 4: maybe your tax returns a good time to do it.
- 7:23Speaker 4: And then lastly, this week I've got a money win
- 7:25Speaker 4: from Kelly, who said she filled up her car with
- 7:28Speaker 4: a locked in fuel price at seven eleven and she
- 7:32Speaker 4: got to redeem a reward because I think it's every
- 7:34Speaker 4: times you got does she tell us, Yeah, she got
- 7:37Speaker 4: a free Krispy Kreme and I had a giggle because
- 7:38Speaker 4: I did that this morning.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I picked up my free Crispy because you had to
- 7:41Speaker 3: get it by Chrispy. Good money. We in like we
- 7:44Speaker 3: have historically worked with seven eleven, but like I use
- 7:48Speaker 3: that app on a weekly basis, Like whenever i'm you know,
- 7:51Speaker 3: thinking about fuel, I'm like, oh, just have a look.
- 7:53Speaker 3: And sometimes I get a little bit cocky. I don't
- 7:56Speaker 3: know about you, but I look at the price lock
- 7:58Speaker 3: that I could put in and I'm like, no, I'm
- 7:59Speaker 3: going to see what I could get tomorrow. And then
- 8:01Speaker 3: I like check tomorrow and then'm like, aha, went down
- 8:03Speaker 3: by two cents. I'm not locked that in anyway. I just,
- 8:06Speaker 3: I don't know, feel powerful. Free Krispy Kreme my favorite
- 8:09Speaker 3: thing in the world exactly. I tagged you in a
- 8:12Speaker 3: thing on Instagram the other day and I was like, Jess,
- 8:14Speaker 3: remember the time we made a whole cake out of
- 8:16Speaker 3: Krispy Kreme. Oh, very we should do that again. Weish,
- 8:19Speaker 3: we should absolutely do that again. So that was a
- 8:22Speaker 3: good rap. I have the absolute privilege of getting Beck's
- 8:27Speaker 3: whole Broke Tips segment, so I hope I do do
- 8:29Speaker 3: this justice. The first broke tip. I have got a
- 8:33Speaker 3: lot of love in our community on our broke Tips thread.
- 8:36Speaker 3: This one comes from Jennifer and she says, if you
- 8:39Speaker 3: belong to any coffee clubs that do loyalty cards with
- 8:42Speaker 3: stamps or digital freebies, hang on to the freebie for
- 8:46Speaker 3: public holidays. When the cost gets much higher for your
- 8:49Speaker 3: free coffee, then gesus are you joking? You're a genius.
- 8:53Speaker 3: She's hated the system, no service surcharge because it's Freefe's free. Sorry,
- 8:59Speaker 3: you're a genius. Yes. The next one comes from Lily
- 9:02Speaker 3: and I'm sorry. I forgot that this even existed as
- 9:05Speaker 3: an option. Ikea Family membership do fifty percent off main
- 9:10Speaker 3: meals on Fridays twenty six dollars fifty for what's actually
- 9:15Speaker 3: a very nice meal, plus Hoists points used for discount
- 9:19Speaker 3: movie tickets, and you've got a very cheap date night.
- 9:21Speaker 4: Oh my god, that's perfect because there's a hoeets and
- 9:23Speaker 4: an Ikea at Richmond.
- 9:24Speaker 3: You cannot tell me that Ikea meatballs don't slap Oh
- 9:28Speaker 3: my other so the vegetables are also delicious. I don't
- 9:31Speaker 3: care anything from Ikia. The desserts elite next level, like
- 9:35Speaker 3: ten out of ten. We should probably go and do
- 9:38Speaker 3: an ea is it worth it at Ikea and be like,
- 9:41Speaker 3: let's try the meatballs again. It's been years, a little
- 9:43Speaker 3: wander through Ikea. I just love a brown too, not
- 9:47Speaker 3: too all right. And the last one I've got this
- 9:49Speaker 3: week is from Daria and she says, as I've got
- 9:53Speaker 3: a school aged kid at home, I was approved for
- 9:56Speaker 3: free internet and free school bus tickets for them, which
- 10:00Speaker 3: now saving me one hundred dollars a month free internet.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Oh my god, that's sue it. She didn't provide us
- 10:06Speaker 3: with any information, so I had to do a little
- 10:08Speaker 3: bit of research. But the Australian government is providing a
- 10:11Speaker 3: School Student Broadband Initiative or the SSBI, which provides free
- 10:18Speaker 3: NBN Internet to eligible families with school age children only
- 10:22Speaker 3: until the end of this year. But like free internets,
- 10:24Speaker 3: say less.
- 10:24Speaker 4: That's amazing, that's so good, go get on that if
- 10:27Speaker 4: you've got.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Here, absolutely, And that's all I've got for broke tips.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Jess it amazing. I'm excited. Let's go to a really
- 10:34Speaker 3: quick break because on the flip side, we're going to
- 10:36Speaker 3: be answering a money dilemma, which is all about being
- 10:39Speaker 3: the financially responsible one in a relationship. And something that
- 10:43Speaker 3: you slid into our dms about your sibling is getting
- 10:46Speaker 3: caught up in something that's giving MLM vibes. So guys,
- 10:49Speaker 3: don't go anywhere. Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen
- 10:56Speaker 3: to this week's money dilemma. Hi, there, have you got
- 11:01Speaker 3: a money dilemma you just can't solve that. She's on
- 11:04Speaker 3: the Money team is here to help. Every week we
- 11:07Speaker 3: tackle your dilemmas, both big and small, to answer your
- 11:10Speaker 3: most burning money, career and life questions. To get involved,
- 11:13Speaker 3: simply head to our website and leave us a short
- 11:15Speaker 3: voice recording and you might just find yourself on the show. Now,
- 11:19Speaker 3: let's take a listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Hi, she's in the money. I'm hoping you can help
- 11:25Speaker 2: me figure out how to have a serious money conversation
- 11:27Speaker 2: with my partner. For a bit of context, we've been
- 11:30Speaker 2: together for four years, living together for two and we
- 11:32Speaker 2: already have a joint account we both transfer to monthly.
- 11:35Speaker 2: I have a steady income and have set up some
- 11:36Speaker 2: good money habits with automatic transfer setup to go to
- 11:39Speaker 2: dedicated accounts. My partner's money, sorry, is very different. He
- 11:43Speaker 2: comes for a family farm and for a long time
- 11:45Speaker 2: he never received a regular wage. We'll just request a
- 11:47Speaker 2: draw as needed, so as a result, he never developed
- 11:50Speaker 2: any good money habits and has no savings. Last financial year,
- 11:53Speaker 2: the family partnership changed so that he now receives a
- 11:55Speaker 2: weekly wage. This is a very low amount, about a
- 11:58Speaker 2: quarter of my income. Offered multiple times to assist my
- 12:01Speaker 2: partner in setting up his finances, and we have allocated
- 12:04Speaker 2: amounts on paper and open to savings account. But I
- 12:06Speaker 2: know he does not yet have any automatic transfer set up,
- 12:08Speaker 2: as he says he prefers to move his money himself.
- 12:11Speaker 2: But an added frustration is I have to remind him
- 12:13Speaker 2: every month to transfer to our own joint account. On
- 12:16Speaker 2: top of this, we you're planning some motivations I've been
- 12:18Speaker 2: saying for a while now, and have about forty thousand
- 12:19Speaker 2: dollars saved. Once upon a time he said he would
- 12:22Speaker 2: match me when the time came, but I doubt this
- 12:23Speaker 2: will happen now. I've asked many times if he can
- 12:26Speaker 2: contribute to the Reno fund or just how he saves
- 12:28Speaker 2: are going, but he never wants to talk about it.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I've also said I do not expect him to match
- 12:31Speaker 2: my monthly contribution, as I do have a high income,
- 12:33Speaker 2: but I still adm yet to see anything from him.
- 12:36Speaker 2: I feel I'm stuck in this Augard situation where I
- 12:38Speaker 2: don't want to push him about his money and his
- 12:39Speaker 2: savings habits, but I regularly see him spend money in
- 12:41Speaker 2: large sums and get very frustrated and concerned that we
- 12:43Speaker 2: are not matching our goals. I've tried to express my concerns,
- 12:46Speaker 2: but his response is always I know, I understand it'll
- 12:49Speaker 2: be right, and I still see no action. Please help.
- 12:53Speaker 4: That's such a hard one, is that I feel like
- 12:55Speaker 4: that's a very classic Australian farming community, like should be right,
- 12:58Speaker 4: we'll figure it out. Like I think that's very like
- 13:00Speaker 4: Salt of the Earth, traditional take on things, we're right,
- 13:03Speaker 4: Like I have family in like rural Australia, and like
- 13:06Speaker 4: I think that attitude is very much like a common thing.
- 13:09Speaker 4: It sounds like if I had to take a guess
- 13:11Speaker 4: I think he's embarrassed. I think it would be hard
- 13:15Speaker 4: probably for him to be earning a quarter of what
- 13:17Speaker 4: you are. And it's good that you're acknowledging that his
- 13:19Speaker 4: ability to save would be a lot lower than yours.
- 13:22Speaker 4: But I do think that it sounds like whether it's
- 13:26Speaker 4: because he's financial literacy isn't as good as yours, or
- 13:28Speaker 4: whether it's not a priority and he's not comfortable saying that.
- 13:32Speaker 4: I feel like potentially there's a little bit of emotion
- 13:35Speaker 4: tied up in this, and that's kind of what's god
- 13:37Speaker 4: in putting the wall up.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I think that.
- 13:40Speaker 4: It's hard because you can't crack someone open if they
- 13:44Speaker 4: don't want to talk to you. But he is your partner,
- 13:47Speaker 4: and I think that if he doesn't want to say
- 13:49Speaker 4: for the renovation, you know, if he has other priorities
- 13:52Speaker 4: and that's what he's spending the large sums of money
- 13:54Speaker 4: on or whatever, that looks like it's okay. But if
- 13:57Speaker 4: you guys aren't on the same page, like that's something
- 14:00Speaker 4: that you need to have a serious conversation about and
- 14:02Speaker 4: he needs to be comfortable being honest with you. I
- 14:06Speaker 4: know that it's hard to, you know, talk about something
- 14:08Speaker 4: especially if you are feeling embarrassment or if you are
- 14:11Speaker 4: feeling you know, not taking a wage for a long time.
- 14:14Speaker 4: Maybe he's feeling behind or I don't want to stereotype,
- 14:17Speaker 4: but I think again, especially in rural areas, I do
- 14:20Speaker 4: think there is a level of traditionalism that exists when
- 14:25Speaker 4: it comes to gender roles and things like that, and
- 14:28Speaker 4: so that maybe playing an element into it as well.
- 14:32Speaker 4: I think that it sounds like you're doing all of
- 14:35Speaker 4: the right things, and maybe you do just need to
- 14:37Speaker 4: have like a serious moment with your partner and say, hey,
- 14:41Speaker 4: I'm starting to feel really concerned. I'm starting to feel
- 14:44Speaker 4: really left out in the dark. Open the door and
- 14:46Speaker 4: say to him, it's okay if you don't want to
- 14:48Speaker 4: say for these things, or it's okay if you are
- 14:51Speaker 4: feeling some.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Type of way.
- 14:53Speaker 4: You know, we're a team. I'm here to support you
- 14:56Speaker 4: and whatever that looks like. If you want to transfer manually,
- 14:59Speaker 4: that's cool, you've got to do it. What's the barrier
- 15:01Speaker 4: for you there? I think we've got to kind of
- 15:03Speaker 4: figure out what's preventing him from doing the things that
- 15:06Speaker 4: he's saying he's going to do. Is it because he's
- 15:09Speaker 4: not remembering Okay, can you set up reminders or is
- 15:11Speaker 4: it because it's not a priority to him, And if so,
- 15:15Speaker 4: that's okay. But he needs to feel comfortable saying that
- 15:17Speaker 4: to you. Yeah, and it's so tricky because obviously we
- 15:20Speaker 4: don't have any insight into your relationship or him as
- 15:22Speaker 4: a person. Yes, so hard, But I'm making a lot
- 15:24Speaker 4: of assumptions and generalizations. But I think that it does
- 15:28Speaker 4: sound like you guys really are on different pages, and
- 15:30Speaker 4: sometimes you do have to just say to somebody, Hey,
- 15:34Speaker 4: it feels like we're in two completely separate worlds and
- 15:37Speaker 4: if we can't get on the same page, we might
- 15:40Speaker 4: not be able to do things together.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Like it just simply might not work. Yeah, I'd be
- 15:44Speaker 3: like agree with everything, So I'm not going to like
- 15:46Speaker 3: repeat what you've said, but cut paste of what Jess said.
- 15:49Speaker 3: And then I think it's also about kind of putting
- 15:53Speaker 3: the hard word on as well. Okay, so you said
- 15:55Speaker 3: that you've got some renovations planned. I would be saying
- 15:57Speaker 3: to your partner, Hey, we're going to have to put
- 15:59Speaker 3: a hold on the renovations. Like you don't have any savings,
- 16:02Speaker 3: you can't match it. So I guess like we're just
- 16:04Speaker 3: going to have to cancel those plans for now as
- 16:07Speaker 3: a little bit of a kick up the butt, like, sorry,
- 16:10Speaker 3: I know that you're spending a whole heap of money
- 16:11Speaker 3: over here, and that's fine if it's not a priority.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Do you do you just not want to do the
- 16:14Speaker 3: renous like what's going on here? Because if you're saving
- 16:17Speaker 3: aggressively and then you're seeing him spend large sums of
- 16:20Speaker 3: money on other stuff, sorry, yeah, that would annoy me
- 16:23Speaker 3: as well, Like, yeah, that's again element that I it
- 16:25Speaker 3: feels disrespectful, Like if you and I are saving towards
- 16:28Speaker 3: something together and then I see you going and spending
- 16:31Speaker 3: on something else, and it means that we have to
- 16:34Speaker 3: sacrifice our shared goal. Sorry, that feels icky. Yeah, So
- 16:38Speaker 3: I think it's about just putting the hard word on
- 16:39Speaker 3: and being like do you not want to do this?
- 16:41Speaker 3: And then I'm sure, and I'm not saying that that's
- 16:43Speaker 3: the best way, but like I'm sure it will be
- 16:45Speaker 3: a bit of a backtrack. No, no, I do. Okay,
- 16:47Speaker 3: well you're not showing me that you do, and like,
- 16:49Speaker 3: actions honestly speak a little bit louder than words, and
- 16:51Speaker 3: like I'm you know, sick of telling you every single
- 16:54Speaker 3: month to transfer to the joint account. So I'm not
- 16:58Speaker 3: going to ask you. You need to pull a reminder
- 17:00Speaker 3: in your calendar or you need to find a way
- 17:02Speaker 3: to do it. If you don't want to automate it,
- 17:04Speaker 3: that's fine. Some people do genuinely want to manage their money,
- 17:07Speaker 3: you know, by going in and being more hands on.
- 17:10Speaker 3: But like, I'm not your mum, No, so get it together,
- 17:14Speaker 3: because I shouldn't have to remind you to transfer to
- 17:17Speaker 3: the joint account. You should be doing that yourself. So
- 17:20Speaker 3: whether that is not automating it but putting a reminder
- 17:22Speaker 3: in your calendar, that should be on you, mate. Like,
- 17:25Speaker 3: I just feel like sometimes you need to have some
- 17:26Speaker 3: hard conversations to make life in the long term a
- 17:29Speaker 3: little bit easier. Yeah, I'd love to know what he's spending,
- 17:33Speaker 3: like what I need? What are the large sums? I
- 17:35Speaker 3: feel like that's an important.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Bit of context that we're missing because everything else you're oh, well,
- 17:40Speaker 4: it could be tied back to the disparity in the income.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Yeah, one hundred percent. Yeah, I've got I'm so curious
- 17:45Speaker 3: to know.
- 17:46Speaker 1: I will.
- 17:46Speaker 3: It's so hard, especially if you're trying to move towards
- 17:49Speaker 3: shared goals together like renovations tells me that you probably
- 17:52Speaker 3: own a property together, and like, yeah, that would be
- 17:55Speaker 3: really rough. Do you have a GUICDM forect? Oh my god,
- 17:59Speaker 3: I do. Are you ready? And it's about MLMs? So
- 18:01Speaker 3: I can't wait? All right, Hello, she's on the money.
- 18:05Speaker 3: I'm in the middle of a family money dilemma and
- 18:08Speaker 3: I need your advice. My brother's gotten really into this
- 18:11Speaker 3: self development program called Landmark. He's spent thousands already and
- 18:16Speaker 3: swears it's changed his life. Now he's pushing the rest
- 18:20Speaker 3: of us to join two. The course he wants me
- 18:22Speaker 3: to do is one thousand dollars, and he keeps offering
- 18:25Speaker 3: to pay half to convince me. But honestly, I've been
- 18:28Speaker 3: doing some research online and it's giving MLM vibes. Hard
- 18:32Speaker 3: to be honest, my sister al it is lined up,
- 18:35Speaker 3: even though I know she can't afford it. She told
- 18:38Speaker 3: me she's feeling just too much pressure to say no
- 18:40Speaker 3: to him. I feel like they're taking financial advantage of him,
- 18:44Speaker 3: and I want to help, but I also want him
- 18:46Speaker 3: to stop pressuring me. I just don't know how to
- 18:49Speaker 3: say something without making it worse or risking our relationship.
- 18:53Speaker 3: That's crazy.
- 18:53Speaker 4: I'll be honest, I don't really know much about what
- 18:55Speaker 4: Landmark is. Do you anything about that?
- 18:57Speaker 3: Ah? So jess Landmark world war much is? Oh? Like,
- 19:02Speaker 3: they just get called Landmark more often. It's an American
- 19:05Speaker 3: employee owned, quote for profit company that uses like self
- 19:10Speaker 3: development programs as their sales tactics. So they don't sell
- 19:15Speaker 3: like a product like you know, mone they sell hair
- 19:18Speaker 3: care and then you've got arbon and they do like
- 19:20Speaker 3: skin care and stuff. Landmark is the company behind what's
- 19:24Speaker 3: called like Landmark Forum, and it's described as having a
- 19:28Speaker 3: lot of similarities to a multi level marketing structure, though
- 19:32Speaker 3: it's not officially classified as one. While Landmark relies heavily
- 19:37Speaker 3: on like word of mouth marketing through its participants to
- 19:40Speaker 3: like recruit new customers, it also emphasizes a really hard
- 19:44Speaker 3: sell approach. And this reliance that this company has on
- 19:48Speaker 3: referrals and recruitment, coupled with what I would say or
- 19:51Speaker 3: call like a super intense nature of like the program
- 19:55Speaker 3: sales tactics, has led lots of people to compare the
- 20:00Speaker 3: to a multi level marketing business. So a lot of
- 20:03Speaker 3: people online are saying, first of all, there's no doubt
- 20:06Speaker 3: Landmark is not an MLM. But it also, you know,
- 20:11Speaker 3: is quite a hard sell kind of situation because people
- 20:14Speaker 3: are not making any money for their referrals, but they
- 20:18Speaker 3: are being able to sell the product to you, if
- 20:21Speaker 3: that makes sense. So lack and it's a life coaching course,
- 20:24Speaker 3: is all you said, kind of life coaching vibes course,
- 20:28Speaker 3: gets your shit together course. It definitely, from my perspective,
- 20:32Speaker 3: praise on people when they are feeling a little bit
- 20:35Speaker 3: flat or lost a little bit of direction and they're
- 20:37Speaker 3: looking for, you know, someone to give them a hand.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, Yeah, it's tough that it's your brother who's
- 20:44Speaker 4: in that situation is trying to unsell it to you.
- 20:47Speaker 4: I think that you should just be able to say, like, no,
- 20:50Speaker 4: he's a full sentence, you know, I absolutely agree, they're
- 20:53Speaker 4: really to me. Should not be much more than that
- 20:57Speaker 4: it sucks your sister's already signed up and done it,
- 20:59Speaker 4: Like I get it for your family and friends when
- 21:02Speaker 4: they're doing something and when they say they've got this
- 21:04Speaker 4: fantastic thing, maybe flipping it around a little bit and saying, hey,
- 21:08Speaker 4: I actually don't have the money to do the course
- 21:10Speaker 4: right now. I feel like that, but I'll pay for
- 21:12Speaker 4: half chess oh yeah, I just I would just I
- 21:17Speaker 4: it's hard because I would just say, look, I'm just
- 21:19Speaker 4: not interested.
- 21:20Speaker 3: It's just not for me. Thanks, Yeah, I'm just done.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Like it's giving quasi Ponzi scheme vibes, Like it's just
- 21:27Speaker 3: I'm not going to say that to my brother at
- 21:29Speaker 3: that point. But I also think it is I don't know,
- 21:32Speaker 3: if it cracks like a duck. Yeah, looks like a duck.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Maybe it's a duck. Yeah, maybe maybe it's an MLM.
- 21:40Speaker 4: But yeah, I think that if Sometimes I think, honestly,
- 21:44Speaker 4: kind of like what we're saying before, sometimes a bit
- 21:46Speaker 4: of harsh truth is what people need. And so maybe
- 21:50Speaker 4: turning around and saying, hey, like you're making me really
- 21:52Speaker 4: uncomfortable by trying to pressure me into this, if someone
- 21:54Speaker 4: said that to me, I would feel truly so terrible.
- 21:57Speaker 3: You know, yeah, but you're a nice person. And I'm
- 22:00Speaker 3: not saying that this person's brother is not a nice person,
- 22:03Speaker 3: but like they are already worried about saying something that
- 22:07Speaker 3: is going to ruin the relationship, and like, you know,
- 22:10Speaker 3: if I said to you, hey, jes you're making me
- 22:11Speaker 3: feel really pressured, you'd be like, what that's on you?
- 22:14Speaker 3: And then maybe we won't be friends anymore.
- 22:16Speaker 4: Yeah, either, relationships that fragile, though, is it worth protecting? Like,
- 22:20Speaker 4: I know that it's family. I don't understand that that's
- 22:22Speaker 4: a really big and important thing. But at the same time,
- 22:26Speaker 4: you can't put yourself a detriment, no financially or emotionally,
- 22:31Speaker 4: for the sake of protecting them either.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:34Speaker 3: I just think it is. It is so fair. And
- 22:37Speaker 3: you said before nol is a full sentence. It is
- 22:39Speaker 3: so fair to say no, I'm not interested in this.
- 22:41Speaker 3: But then I feel like you're getting the overwhelming sense
- 22:45Speaker 3: to like educate your brother on this as well, because
- 22:48Speaker 3: you're feeling like he's being financially taken advantage of. And
- 22:51Speaker 3: I think that's where you might want to be able
- 22:54Speaker 3: to flag it say oh, like I really like and
- 22:57Speaker 3: maybe this is how I would do it. I looked
- 22:59Speaker 3: into it. Oh my goodness, did you see all the
- 23:02Speaker 3: Reddit threads and stuff online? Like even the Wikipedia says
- 23:06Speaker 3: that it is basically an MLM that takes advantage of
- 23:09Speaker 3: people like you know, what research did you do before
- 23:12Speaker 3: you got involved? Like the whole point is to feel
- 23:15Speaker 3: motivated or get it, but like, what are you genuine
- 23:17Speaker 3: apart from like loving the content, what else are you
- 23:21Speaker 3: getting out of it? Like what are they getting out
- 23:23Speaker 3: of it? And kind of going down that route because
- 23:25Speaker 3: you don't want to be like you're being taken advantage of,
- 23:28Speaker 3: because like I know what they're going to say, no,
- 23:30Speaker 3: we're not, Yeah, okay, have you seen all this stuff online?
- 23:34Speaker 3: And hopefully that prompts them to maybe do a little
- 23:36Speaker 3: bit more research or even come back to you and
- 23:39Speaker 3: say no, and you go, well, I actually did a
- 23:41Speaker 3: hit more research and it says X, Y and Z,
- 23:43Speaker 3: And like, I think that could be a good opener
- 23:45Speaker 3: because a lot of the time it's like I get
- 23:49Speaker 3: so many messages from people and they're beautiful, smart women,
- 23:52Speaker 3: and they say, Victora, I'm so embarrassed I got out
- 23:55Speaker 3: of an MLM. I can't believe I did that. That's
- 23:58Speaker 3: so embarrassing. Not because you're not smart. These platforms rely
- 24:03Speaker 3: on smart people who don't know about their background. They
- 24:07Speaker 3: rely on smart people like you, Jess, who trust who
- 24:12Speaker 3: are going to go, oh my god, that does sound
- 24:14Speaker 3: good and I trust the person telling me, so why
- 24:16Speaker 3: would I take the time to research and deep dive?
- 24:19Speaker 3: They probably haven't done it and don't understand the negative
- 24:23Speaker 3: side of it, because it's so easy to see the
- 24:25Speaker 3: positive when everyone's so happy and there's like course incredible,
- 24:29Speaker 3: the same thing is happening. I think I'm getting a
- 24:31Speaker 3: lot of dms recently about these property seminars that are
- 24:36Speaker 3: verse eight grand crazy and you get to walk away
- 24:39Speaker 3: at the end of the weekend with one or two
- 24:42Speaker 3: investment properties off the plan. Those people are making an
- 24:45Speaker 3: absolute mint from taking advantage of you. If you want
- 24:49Speaker 3: to get into investment properties, you can learn so much
- 24:52Speaker 3: for free through my content, through lots of other podcasts,
- 24:55Speaker 3: content from my books on property, from other people's books
- 25:00Speaker 3: on property, and then you know what you can do.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Just you can go talk to a mortgage broker and
- 25:03Speaker 3: be like, hey, what would this look like? What serviceability
- 25:05Speaker 3: do I have? Because I promise they're not giving houses
- 25:08Speaker 3: to people who can't afford them. They're giving houses to
- 25:10Speaker 3: people who can be lulled into this false sense of
- 25:14Speaker 3: security to then sell them off the plan properties that
- 25:17Speaker 3: they're taking a massive clip of. Yeah, it actually kills me.
- 25:20Speaker 3: It's crazy.
- 25:21Speaker 4: What did everybody else say? Because I feel like we're
- 25:23Speaker 4: kind of yeah, we ask in the community.
- 25:25Speaker 3: So first question we said was what would you do
- 25:27Speaker 3: if you thought your sibling was being financially taken advantage
- 25:31Speaker 3: of like this, fifty nine percent of you said, I'll
- 25:34Speaker 3: just be giving them my opinion truthfully. Twenty one percent
- 25:37Speaker 3: of you said, we're having a family intervention. I kind
- 25:42Speaker 3: of rate that honestly, like a big banner, the whole
- 25:45Speaker 3: shebang full family intervention. And then eighteen percent of you said,
- 25:49Speaker 3: try and plant the seed gently, and then three percent
- 25:52Speaker 3: of you said, I'm going to say nothing. They're an
- 25:54Speaker 3: adult that they can deal with that. I'm all for
- 25:57Speaker 3: the family intervention. Could you film that and send that
- 26:00Speaker 3: to us? Just I would like to see that just
- 26:02Speaker 3: for educational purposes. I feel like maybe if.
- 26:04Speaker 4: You're confronted with so many people that you'd love to
- 26:07Speaker 4: all saying to you hate because you know one person
- 26:09Speaker 4: you can is cooked.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Have you seen that show in the US called Intervention? Oh,
- 26:14Speaker 3: it's so good.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Ah.
- 26:16Speaker 4: In my mind it would be powerful because it's like, yeah,
- 26:18Speaker 4: like one person says, oh.
- 26:19Speaker 3: I think like this isn't great. You're oh, it's just them.
- 26:21Speaker 3: In my head, an intervention is so dramatic, like they're like, oh, hey, Jess,
- 26:25Speaker 3: do you want to come to my house for dinner?
- 26:27Speaker 3: It'll just be you and I and then you walk
- 26:29Speaker 3: into my house and it's full of all your family
- 26:30Speaker 3: and friends and they're like, sit down in the chair,
- 26:32Speaker 3: we're going to tell you to get off the drugs.
- 26:34Speaker 3: And you're like, my god, I need another wine for this. Yeah,
- 26:37Speaker 3: that sounds like a lot, but also, don't do it
- 26:39Speaker 3: like that. But if you do, maybe film it and
- 26:42Speaker 3: send it to me. I don't know anyway. We also
- 26:44Speaker 3: ask the community, how would you handle the pressure they
- 26:47Speaker 3: are putting on you to sign up? Eighty nine percent
- 26:50Speaker 3: of you said I'd be setting a firm boundary, seven
- 26:53Speaker 3: percent of you said I'd actually distance myself, five percent
- 26:56Speaker 3: of you said I'm just changing the subject, and none
- 26:59Speaker 3: of you so zero percent. But like in terms of
- 27:02Speaker 3: our statistics, we had so many responses, so some people replied,
- 27:05Speaker 3: but it wasn't enough to get to one percent of
- 27:08Speaker 3: this group said say yes just to make it stop.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Oh no, don't do that. Well, thankfully, it was a
- 27:14Speaker 3: very very small amount of people. So technically zero percent
- 27:17Speaker 3: of people said that, but a couple a couple still
- 27:19Speaker 3: said that eighty nine five and seven.
- 27:21Speaker 4: I don't know that the math on that is quite now,
- 27:23Speaker 4: that's what I want that's what Instagram says, right, That's what.
- 27:27Speaker 3: Our Instagram responses said, So we're just going to go
- 27:31Speaker 3: with that. Yeah, one percent of you is definitely very
- 27:35Speaker 3: valid and reliable. Yep. Well, if you're writing a thesis
- 27:39Speaker 3: or you're doing a PhD, this data is significant. Don't
- 27:43Speaker 3: use Instagram policy for PhD. We also went to the
- 27:47Speaker 3: community and said, guys, what's your two cents tell us?
- 27:50Speaker 3: First person said, careful the intervention doesn't backfire. Had someone
- 27:54Speaker 3: pull this on me and it still hurts. Oh, that's
- 27:57Speaker 3: really sad that it didn't work for them. No. Next
- 28:00Speaker 3: person said, check the company financials. Who's getting paid when where?
- 28:04Speaker 4: Well, yeah, there's nothing that's going to make you feel
- 28:07Speaker 4: like a shock of cold water exactly. The people at
- 28:09Speaker 4: the top of getting millions and millions and you're making
- 28:12Speaker 4: four dollars and you're still in ten thousand dollars worth
- 28:14Speaker 4: of debt. Wild Next person said, send them the links
- 28:17Speaker 4: to She's on the money. I'm just here for Veda's response.
- 28:20Speaker 3: On this one. The people know you, well, I just
- 28:24Speaker 3: get a little bit mad. Someone said, it's giving Nexsian
- 28:27Speaker 3: vibes some good films, books and podcasts on it. Might
- 28:30Speaker 3: be really helpful for your brother. And then there's a
- 28:33Speaker 3: three parter. So this three part A. And I'm not
- 28:36Speaker 3: going to out who they are, but they are somebody
- 28:39Speaker 3: who is very proactive in the MLM community in terms
- 28:46Speaker 3: of like exposing what's going on. Yeah, so like I'm
- 28:49Speaker 3: not saying it to be able to identify them, but
- 28:52Speaker 3: I do take what they say. They're educated. Yeah, they're
- 28:56Speaker 3: educated in this like they would know. So first is
- 28:59Speaker 3: three part. First comment says Landmark is a cult as
- 29:02Speaker 3: it uses elgats. You have to set a firm boundary
- 29:05Speaker 3: and distance yourself. Look up what elgats are. They're large
- 29:09Speaker 3: group awareness trainings to understand how he's literally been brainwashed.
- 29:14Speaker 3: Landmark Investment never has an end date. Avoid distance yourself
- 29:19Speaker 3: at all costs. That's scary and the nexum vibes. So next,
- 29:26Speaker 3: I don't know what a cult in the US, very
- 29:29Speaker 3: MLM like lots of documentaries on it. Just type in
- 29:34Speaker 3: neum like documentary to Google. This is the stuff that
- 29:38Speaker 3: I eat up. Jess, Like, if you come to my
- 29:40Speaker 3: house on Friday night, we're ordering pizza, but we're also
- 29:43Speaker 3: watching an MLM or a cult documentary.
- 29:45Speaker 4: Well, because I feel almost like mlums are like a
- 29:48Speaker 4: soft cult, right, Like they kind of I feel like
- 29:50Speaker 4: there's some processes.
- 29:51Speaker 3: And practices that are maybe mirrored. I think this is
- 29:54Speaker 3: why I love the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, because
- 29:56Speaker 3: the idea of like Mormonism gives to me cult vibes
- 30:00Speaker 3: as well. I just, oh, do you know what? I
- 30:02Speaker 3: also need to remind you of the statistic or the
- 30:05Speaker 3: piece of research that says the people that are drawn
- 30:08Speaker 3: more to reality TV have a higher IQ at this point,
- 30:13Speaker 3: very important stuff, hard hitting there.
- 30:14Speaker 4: But yeah, I think that it's especially knowing that additional
- 30:18Speaker 4: bit of context from someone who obviously said is in
- 30:20Speaker 4: the no so to speak. Yeah, that makes me feel
- 30:23Speaker 4: that perhaps they're right in that all you can do
- 30:26Speaker 4: is provide them with the right information. But it's really
- 30:28Speaker 4: important that you don't get sucked down into that too,
- 30:31Speaker 4: because they're using manipulation and psychological techniques and things too.
- 30:36Speaker 4: They're using it to take advantage of you full stop
- 30:38Speaker 4: in the story, which is really scary. Next person and
- 30:40Speaker 4: I've just got two more for you, said so. Next
- 30:43Speaker 4: person said, I had an ex in Landmark and it
- 30:45Speaker 4: was horrendous, A really bad therapy version of an MLM.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Wow.
- 30:50Speaker 3: And there someone said, actually was in Landmark. So I've
- 30:55Speaker 3: been there. I've done that. I lost thousands of dollars.
- 30:58Speaker 3: If it doesn't ever feel right, don't do it. Don't
- 31:01Speaker 3: let other people convince you. I'm so glad you got out.
- 31:04Speaker 3: That's really it's chaos. And I think there's so many
- 31:07Speaker 3: times people are really embarrassed. They're like, I can't believe
- 31:10Speaker 3: I did this. It must be because I'm so silly,
- 31:12Speaker 3: or I'm not very smart. No, no, no, you're smart.
- 31:14Speaker 3: That's why you kind of were more likely to buy
