- 0:51Speaker 2: Hello and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 0:53Speaker 2: that makes personal finance fun is especially on Fridays. It
- 0:57Speaker 2: is our favorite day of the week because it's when
- 0:59Speaker 2: we get the team together and we celebrate you the
- 1:01Speaker 2: incredible She's on the Money community today, it's just Beck
- 1:05Speaker 2: and Eye, so be prepared for things to be a
- 1:07Speaker 2: little bit more rogue than usual, but I will be
- 1:10Speaker 2: sharing some of my favorite community money in Beck will
- 1:12Speaker 2: still be sharing all of her best broke tips and
- 1:15Speaker 2: will be helping to answer a money dilemma from someone
- 1:17Speaker 2: who is suffering from burnout but has so many financial
- 1:20Speaker 2: commitments they feel trapped in their job. Plus a DM
- 1:23Speaker 2: that you slid into my inbox with that asks the question,
- 1:26Speaker 2: is a gift really a gift if it costs the
- 1:28Speaker 2: receiver money to use it?
- 1:29Speaker 3: Ah?
- 1:30Speaker 2: My instinctive reaction is no, no. But it's pets. Yeah,
- 1:35Speaker 2: I know, I'm very unless it's like parents gifting them.
- 1:38Speaker 3: To the kids.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Yeah, their kids specifically. Anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I'm so sorry before we get into it.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Yeah, we always like to start the show with a
- 1:46Speaker 3: five star review, but not today. Have you got one
- 1:49Speaker 3: to guess?
- 1:51Speaker 2: I'm just sure do. This one is from the Lily
- 1:53Speaker 2: She said She's on the money has genuinely changed my
- 1:56Speaker 2: mindset around money and personal growth. I love how relatable
- 1:59Speaker 2: you three would and it feels like you're just sitting
- 2:01Speaker 2: and listening with friends who totally get it. It has
- 2:04Speaker 2: made money simple and investing not a scary word.
- 2:07Speaker 3: That's gorgeous. Thank you the lily. I don't it's yeah,
- 2:13Speaker 3: it's like I know a few lilies, but this is
- 2:15Speaker 3: the lily.
- 2:15Speaker 4: You know.
- 2:16Speaker 2: That's crazy and we appreciate you. Thank you, You are
- 2:18Speaker 2: appreciate you. Thank you.
- 2:20Speaker 3: This is my favorite part of the show. Well, I
- 2:22Speaker 3: have so many favorites.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I don't know about you.
- 2:24Speaker 3: But we have Question of the Week.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Which do you love? Question of the Week?
- 2:27Speaker 3: I love Question of the Week. You get to ask
- 2:29Speaker 3: us one question you're dying to know. It can be
- 2:31Speaker 3: about literally anything. So this week's question comes from Miranda,
- 2:35Speaker 3: who wants to know what hill will you die on?
- 2:38Speaker 3: That most people think is ridiculous.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Oh, this is such a great question, and you know what,
- 2:42Speaker 2: I know there are so many because I'm so weirdly
- 2:44Speaker 2: particular at things, and not a single one is coming
- 2:46Speaker 2: to mind right now.
- 2:47Speaker 4: I know.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Crazy. It's like when someone asks you to put a
- 2:50Speaker 3: song on and you're like, I can't think of a
- 2:52Speaker 3: single song, but I know songs. Yeah, literally, my one
- 2:55Speaker 3: is that I don't well, actually maybe it's like a
- 2:59Speaker 3: two pronger. So firstly, I'm in the dinner realm. I'
- 3:04Speaker 3: mean like going out for dinner. I just think going
- 3:07Speaker 3: out for dinner or like having dinner with friends or
- 3:09Speaker 3: like this kind of way where we socialize, Like I
- 3:12Speaker 3: hate it having like something about like seeing across from
- 3:16Speaker 3: someone for starters. Also it depends what you're sitting next to,
- 3:19Speaker 3: like this structured eating around a table, and also the
- 3:22Speaker 3: eating part as well. I think it's so like I
- 3:26Speaker 3: just don't like it. But also that's usually tied with
- 3:28Speaker 3: a really dim lighting and I really like and I
- 3:32Speaker 3: think I've said this on the show before, I really
- 3:34Speaker 3: like like seven to eleven fluorescent bright light because it
- 3:38Speaker 3: helps me feel awake. So if I'm gonna be sap,
- 3:41Speaker 3: and the only objective when you're sat across the table
- 3:44Speaker 3: from someone is to like talk and connect, which is great,
- 3:47Speaker 3: we'd love to do that, but that's the only thing
- 3:50Speaker 3: you can do. There's nothing that's like you can't like
- 3:52Speaker 3: sit next to each other and like get cozy or
- 3:54Speaker 3: like get affectionate or look at each other's tiktoks, and
- 3:58Speaker 3: you know, the only thing you have is chit chat.
- 4:01Speaker 3: And so if I'm gonna have that, then it has
- 4:03Speaker 3: to be paired with a bright light that's keeping you
- 4:06Speaker 3: like alert and active, I think it may be.
- 4:08Speaker 2: The only person in the world that feels that way.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Everybody hates I know, I really like that bright light,
- 4:14Speaker 3: especially when you must stay attentive and alert.
- 4:17Speaker 2: You know, are you into the concept of like group
- 4:20Speaker 2: dinner at home you just don't like the rigidity of
- 4:24Speaker 2: at a restaurant, or you just don't like sharing meals
- 4:27Speaker 2: like broadly as a general rule, I don't think I
- 4:30Speaker 2: like any of it.
- 4:30Speaker 3: But if we are going to share a meal, I
- 4:32Speaker 3: would like it to be like we're all sat on
- 4:34Speaker 3: the floor or like around, like on the lounge or
- 4:37Speaker 3: something like that. I don't mind that. But the eating
- 4:39Speaker 3: together as an activity, you're eating like can't talk properly.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't like it.
- 4:44Speaker 3: I don't like it. It's messy. I don't like it. Yeah,
- 4:47Speaker 3: so yeah, I don't think I like going out for
- 4:49Speaker 3: dinner or going out for food, going for brunch with friends.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Wow, that is that is a hottake from you. I'm shocked, honestly.
- 4:59Speaker 2: The The only thing that I can think of, and
- 5:01Speaker 2: it's only because I just got out of my car
- 5:03Speaker 2: to get to the studio, is you need to use
- 5:05Speaker 2: your blinker before you break Like if you're turning and
- 5:08Speaker 2: you are not turning your blinker on before you break. Yes,
- 5:10Speaker 2: I agree, the immediate loss of license.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I agree. Hate it, yeah, yeah, I hate it.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yes, And I'm pretty sure like that is the correct
- 5:18Speaker 2: way to do it, Like it's not like I'm just
- 5:20Speaker 2: saying this is a personal preference, Like that is the
- 5:21Speaker 2: correct way to do it. Yeah, And I'm just actually
- 5:24Speaker 2: shocked by how many people don't I know.
- 5:26Speaker 3: I know. And well, actually, while we're on that, if
- 5:28Speaker 3: you are at the lights and you you are in
- 5:31Speaker 3: the right lane, so you can turn right if you want,
- 5:33Speaker 3: but you haven't put your blinker on yet, and we're
- 5:35Speaker 3: sitting shale. That's shale because you're sat behind and thinking like, oh,
- 5:40Speaker 3: they're going straight and then the light good screen, they
- 5:43Speaker 3: put their blinker on.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Yeah, now you're stuck.
- 5:45Speaker 5: I know.
- 5:45Speaker 3: I don't like it.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Weekend, I literally stuck behind someone. I was literally in
- 5:49Speaker 2: my car. You should have seen me if you looked
- 5:50Speaker 2: in it from the outside, it would just be me
- 5:52Speaker 2: like screaming, like enough in my car.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Follow the rule.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Follow the rule. That is the hill that I will die.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, okay.
- 5:58Speaker 5: I like that.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I like that.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Oh that's a great question.
- 6:02Speaker 2: I really like that one.
- 6:03Speaker 1: That was so good.
- 6:03Speaker 2: And if you've got a money question that you want
- 6:05Speaker 2: us to answer, leave it in the comments on Spotify.
- 6:08Speaker 2: It doesn't have to be finance related. In fact, our
- 6:10Speaker 2: favorite ones generally aren't. Yes, so leave whatever you want.
- 6:13Speaker 2: It's only on Spotify at the moment, hopefully other place
- 6:15Speaker 2: as soon we you can DM it to us if
- 6:16Speaker 2: you would like.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Yes, thank you. And actually the ones that aren't financi
- 6:20Speaker 3: mean that we can both. I mean, you've got a
- 6:22Speaker 3: finance brain, but that means that I can get involved
- 6:25Speaker 3: every once in a while. Speaking of getting involved, do
- 6:28Speaker 3: you have some community money wins?
- 6:29Speaker 2: I absolutely do. What a segway? Firstly, this week I've
- 6:32Speaker 2: got one from Laura who says she was exchanging money
- 6:35Speaker 2: for an overseas trip and the exchange rate was better
- 6:37Speaker 2: online doing click and collect for cash instead of in store.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Oh so she did that and she got so much
- 6:42Speaker 2: more out of it. I didn't know that click and
- 6:43Speaker 2: collect cash exchanges were a thing.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I did not know.
- 6:46Speaker 3: What you go and you pay cash?
- 6:48Speaker 2: No, so I think like online you exchange like you
- 6:50Speaker 2: would pay from your debit card for example. I'm assuming
- 6:53Speaker 2: online and then they'll just have the cash ready for
- 6:56Speaker 2: you to pick it up.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Oh, I understand, And I don't know why.
- 7:01Speaker 2: That would be a better Maybe because then they don't
- 7:02Speaker 2: have to handle the money and they're trying to get
- 7:04Speaker 2: into digital. I'm not sure, but an option that I
- 7:07Speaker 2: didn't know about, and I thought I would share in
- 7:08Speaker 2: case anybody else is changing money over. That's great. Next,
- 7:11Speaker 2: I've got a money in from Hannah, who said she
- 7:13Speaker 2: finally owned up a shares his account and invested in
- 7:15Speaker 2: shares for the first time. She said, I was always
- 7:18Speaker 2: somewhat scared, but after listening to the podcast and doing
- 7:20Speaker 2: a heap of my own research, I finally took the
- 7:22Speaker 2: plunge and I am so glad that I did.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Amazing.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Anytimes someone says they're so investing for the first time,
- 7:27Speaker 2: I just get so excited for this. That's awesome. Well done, Hannah. Next,
- 7:31Speaker 2: I've got money in from Shani, who said I got
- 7:33Speaker 2: one hundred dollar visa gift card award from work for
- 7:36Speaker 2: special recognition, and I'm going to use it for my
- 7:38Speaker 2: workday treats.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Amazing.
- 7:40Speaker 2: I always think one of my friends, he works in
- 7:42Speaker 2: sales and they do like giveaways all the time. Like
- 7:46Speaker 2: apparently he was saying, there's all these competitions that they run,
- 7:49Speaker 2: and most people don't really care about them, so he
- 7:52Speaker 2: just cleans up and wins them.
- 7:53Speaker 1: All.
- 7:54Speaker 2: He's had like vouchers for dinner and like all kinds
- 7:56Speaker 2: of things. I just think, how fun does that stand?
- 7:58Speaker 3: I know, I know that's the salespeople always get these,
- 8:01Speaker 3: and they get like those free client breakfasts, and like everything.
- 8:04Speaker 3: I feel like everything in the world is kind of free.
- 8:06Speaker 3: It sounds so fun and so fun.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Next, I've got a money in from Naymer, who said
- 8:10Speaker 2: I used the seven to eleven fuel lock last week
- 8:12Speaker 2: before the price hike. Yesterday I saved twenty five cents
- 8:15Speaker 2: per later when I filled my cast, so ended up
- 8:17Speaker 2: saving fourteen dollars.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Amazing.
- 8:20Speaker 2: My fuelock has been getting a workout. Yeah, prices as
- 8:23Speaker 2: high as I are. I am like locking it in
- 8:26Speaker 2: hotcon I can if I can find it for cheap. Next,
- 8:29Speaker 2: I've got of money in from Alicia, who said I've
- 8:31Speaker 2: been on a trip away and I managed to make
- 8:32Speaker 2: it through three excellent vintage stores without making a single
- 8:36Speaker 2: impulse purchase.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Wow.
- 8:38Speaker 2: And then lastly this week, I've got one from Lauren
- 8:40Speaker 2: who said, She called up to book her punctured tie
- 8:43Speaker 2: in to get replaced, only to find out that it's
- 8:45Speaker 2: still under warranty.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Oh incredible.
- 8:48Speaker 2: How good is that? Cast off is the worst too.
- 8:50Speaker 3: That's actually very timely because I just realized had to
- 8:53Speaker 3: get all my tires replaced right before this. Oh sense
- 8:56Speaker 3: so expensive, I know, but that's okay. It all comes
- 8:59Speaker 3: out in the wash. Sometimes it just means I will
- 9:02Speaker 3: be doing more work this week, actually is what we
- 9:05Speaker 3: At least you can pick up an extra shift us
- 9:07Speaker 3: an appy you've been using. Yes, that is so true.
- 9:09Speaker 3: I've really been trying to avoid it. I tell you
- 9:11Speaker 3: what a shout out to all the hospital workers. You
- 9:13Speaker 3: are on your feet, but I'm gonna be back in there,
- 9:15Speaker 3: so let me know if you need a kitchen hand.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Anyone listening.
- 9:20Speaker 2: For this week, it is not going to be.
- 9:23Speaker 3: But I did want to mention that I guess because
- 9:24Speaker 3: of the price hike, the petrol price hike. Just a
- 9:26Speaker 3: reminder to everyone. I have said this before, petrol spy.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Please use petrol spy before you fill up because it
- 9:32Speaker 3: will show you all the prices around you or even
- 9:36Speaker 3: all of Australia. So make sure you're using that do
- 9:38Speaker 3: not forget. Okay. So I've got some brut tips here.
- 9:41Speaker 3: If it's quite al right, I would love to hear
- 9:44Speaker 3: that I have.
- 9:45Speaker 2: You surprised, taken aback and absolutely ready. Okay.
- 9:49Speaker 3: So first one comes from Emma, who says, whenever I
- 9:52Speaker 3: sign up to a website's loyalty or emailing list for
- 9:55Speaker 3: free shipping or a new customer discount, I always put
- 9:58Speaker 3: my birthday as the next day, and ninety percent of
- 10:01Speaker 3: the time will get another voucher or discount for my
- 10:03Speaker 3: birthday at the same time to use on the purchase.
- 10:06Speaker 3: I was already going to make saves buying something you
- 10:08Speaker 3: didn't want or need just because near your birthday you've
- 10:10Speaker 3: got a twenty percent of voucher or whatever they send.
- 10:14Speaker 3: So clever, very clever.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Although I signed up last year to a bunch of
- 10:17Speaker 2: things because I wanted to make this video of all
- 10:19Speaker 2: different freebies you can get on your birthday. Yeah, I
- 10:21Speaker 2: will do that, guys, we just have to wait for
- 10:22Speaker 2: July because I didn't realize that a lot of the
- 10:24Speaker 2: places I was signing up to, at least you had
- 10:26Speaker 2: to be signed up for two weeks before you got it,
- 10:28Speaker 2: so I had to wait a okay, So just double
- 10:32Speaker 2: check maybe before if that's your plan, maybe put your
- 10:35Speaker 2: birthday in for two weeks away.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Yeah, that's crazy. What are you waiting period on a voucher?
- 10:41Speaker 3: I thank you so much, Emma. The Saxon one comes
- 10:44Speaker 3: from Haley. If you don't have it already, get ambulance cover.
- 10:46Speaker 3: It's actually very affordable and as a fit and healthy human,
- 10:50Speaker 3: I didn't think there was any need for it until
- 10:52Speaker 3: there was. That is so ominous and I'm so sorry.
- 10:55Speaker 3: I hope you're okay, Haley. We don't have context of that,
- 10:58Speaker 3: but I assume that Haley lives to tell the tale,
- 11:01Speaker 3: hence why they were in my brick tips. Yeah, so,
- 11:04Speaker 3: but I do hope you're okay. That is really true.
- 11:06Speaker 3: I think a lot of like sporting clubs and stuff
- 11:09Speaker 3: may tell you that you need to have it before
- 11:10Speaker 3: you can play, which is great. But yeah, I think
- 11:13Speaker 3: when signing up for health insurance a while ago, it
- 11:15Speaker 3: was kind of just.
- 11:15Speaker 2: A default thing to have that is included. But if
- 11:17Speaker 2: you don't have health insurance, you can take our ambulance
- 11:19Speaker 2: cover on its own. I think it's the point that
- 11:21Speaker 2: Hayley's making, Yes, and it's like quite affordable because from
- 11:24Speaker 2: what I've heard, if you do have to take a
- 11:26Speaker 2: spontaneous ride in the ambulance, it's very expensive. You don't
- 11:30Speaker 2: have cover.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Yeah, that's true. And I has that always been a thing.
- 11:34Speaker 2: It's only in recent years that I've started to properly adult. Yeah, honestly, entirely. Sure,
- 11:39Speaker 2: that's probably something my parents were all over. But and
- 11:41Speaker 2: I mean I think it's always been covered by my
- 11:43Speaker 2: health insurance. But if you can only do one thing, yeah,
- 11:46Speaker 2: it may be worth doing that. That's very true. Actually,
- 11:49Speaker 2: it's a really really good tip.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Thank you, Hailey. And this next one comes from myself.
- 11:53Speaker 3: If you are in Melbourne. I'm sure there are these
- 11:56Speaker 3: things everywhere in Australia, but in Melbourne's specifically Eddie Gardens,
- 12:02Speaker 3: my favorite place in the world. So it's like there's
- 12:04Speaker 3: bins in the park usually and so if you are
- 12:06Speaker 3: in Eddie Gardens you might find there are these little
- 12:08Speaker 3: crates that say drop or collect cans and so it's
- 12:13Speaker 3: for if you I wish. Actually I did this morning
- 12:15Speaker 3: with my friend randomly. She really wanted to go and
- 12:17Speaker 3: drop off a bunch of bottles and cans and stuff,
- 12:19Speaker 3: and we made like five bucks and there was only
- 12:21Speaker 3: like twenty bottles, so I don't know.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I haven't seen photos of these little buses. Yeah, that's
- 12:25Speaker 2: such a good idea, and so there.
- 12:27Speaker 3: I'm sure there are places like let us know if
- 12:29Speaker 3: there are, but right now all I know of is
- 12:31Speaker 3: Eddie Gardens. So yeah, if you're just strapped for cash,
- 12:35Speaker 3: obviously try and leave them for the less fortunate, but
- 12:38Speaker 3: drop them in there and then or take them if
- 12:41Speaker 3: you need. So that is my brick tip.
- 12:43Speaker 2: That's a really good one. I'm a big fan of that.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
- 12:46Speaker 3: I think this is a good time to head to
- 12:47Speaker 3: a quick break. We'll be helping to answer money dilemma
- 12:50Speaker 3: from someone who is suffering burnout but has so many
- 12:52Speaker 3: financial commitments so she feels trapped in her job and
- 12:56Speaker 3: a DM you slid into our inbox about that asks
- 12:58Speaker 3: the question is a gift really gift if it costs
- 13:00Speaker 3: the receiver money to use it, don't go anywhere.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 13:08Speaker 2: money dilemma.
- 13:11Speaker 5: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 13:13Speaker 5: can't solve the She's on the Money team is here
- 13:16Speaker 5: to help. Every week we tackle your dilemmas both big

- 13:22Speaker 5: life questions. To get involved, simply head to our website
- 13:25Speaker 5: and leave us a short voice recording and you might
- 13:27Speaker 5: just find yourself on the show.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Now, let's take a listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Hey, she's on the money.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I really need some help.
- 13:37Speaker 4: I currently earn two hundred and eighty thousand dollars a
- 13:39Speaker 4: year and need to earn the same amount of money
- 13:44Speaker 4: to keep paying for my own home, but also a
- 13:47Speaker 4: home that I brought from my parents and a business
- 13:50Speaker 4: that I've recently brought. But I'd really like a career
- 13:54Speaker 4: change because I'm extremely burnt out and there's never enough
- 13:57Speaker 4: hours in my day.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Please help me before I I.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Go criminally insane. I'm pretty sure.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Thanks. That's such a stressful situation. It's so nice to
- 14:06Speaker 3: me to buy a place for your parents. God, I
- 14:09Speaker 3: don't know, I know the feeling, and so or I
- 14:13Speaker 3: really can offer is validation that that is such a
- 14:17Speaker 3: stressful situation. And it's so annoying because I, I mean,
- 14:20Speaker 3: I have been saying I haven't been working, but I
- 14:22Speaker 3: have been saying that you can't just really put a
- 14:23Speaker 3: pause on life, which is crazy. So if you get
- 14:25Speaker 3: burnt out, if you get tired, you just you gotta
- 14:28Speaker 3: keep going. I suppose what else do you do, which
- 14:30Speaker 3: is really a shame. So I think maybe for starters,
- 14:35Speaker 3: if you have any leave banked up, like use it
- 14:38Speaker 3: right now and use all your leave, use your sick leave,
- 14:41Speaker 3: use your mental health leave, because this is what it's
- 14:44Speaker 3: there for, really, and in that time, maybe figure out
- 14:47Speaker 3: what you want to do. That's an extremely impressive salary.
- 14:51Speaker 3: I gotta say. I guess I would try and figure
- 14:53Speaker 3: out what is not essential. And I really mean that
- 14:58Speaker 3: in like the most crazy way as well. If it
- 15:01Speaker 3: means that you could downsize yourself, then really consider that.
- 15:06Speaker 3: I know that maybe it's a bit tricky with your parents,
- 15:08Speaker 3: like you don't want them to up and move and
- 15:10Speaker 3: you probably I'm assuming their own a situation where they
- 15:13Speaker 3: can't really help pay. So let's in our minds think
- 15:17Speaker 3: that that's we can't really change that, but maybe you
- 15:20Speaker 3: can change your own living situation or yeah, it's I mean,
- 15:24Speaker 3: it's the cost of living crisis right now. And so
- 15:26Speaker 3: that like really does affect everyone. And so when I say,
- 15:28Speaker 3: like cut down, it's getting to the point where it's
- 15:31Speaker 3: like make your own bread for sixty cents instead of
- 15:34Speaker 3: two dollars, which is insane. You don't have that much time,
- 15:37Speaker 3: I'm assuming on your hands, is what it sounds like.
- 15:40Speaker 3: So yeah, I think just like, definitely take all your
- 15:43Speaker 3: leave as much as you can and just try and
- 15:45Speaker 3: figure out next steps. Maybe even try and find a
- 15:47Speaker 3: new job, maybe something that's remote or like a little
- 15:50Speaker 3: bit more hybrids you can squeeze things into today. Yeah,
- 15:55Speaker 3: that's a tricky situation. I'm sorry, it's not really that helpful.
- 15:58Speaker 3: I don't think.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it is tough. I think we all love to dream,
- 16:00Speaker 2: like hearing oh my god, you were two hundred and
- 16:02Speaker 2: eighty thousand dollars. Oh yeah, you can only dream. However,
- 16:06Speaker 2: I think a lot of people do forget that, generally speaking,
- 16:08Speaker 2: with higher salary comes higher levels of responsibility, higher levels
- 16:12Speaker 2: of hours work, higher levels of stress, and all of
- 16:15Speaker 2: those absolutely do impact your work life balance and your
- 16:18Speaker 2: feelings of burnout. I'm really sorry that you're feeling that way.
- 16:21Speaker 2: It is shit. The reality of it is though, unfortunately,
- 16:25Speaker 2: like we're operating on the assumption that you can't adjust
- 16:28Speaker 2: your existing you know, your two mortgages and what I'm
- 16:30Speaker 2: assuming is a business loan, probably to purchase this business.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Those are fixed costs, so I would exactly as you said,
- 16:38Speaker 2: be looking at your existing expenses. More often than not,
- 16:42Speaker 2: when people start earning higher incomes, lifestyle creep sets in.
- 16:47Speaker 2: You start spending more. You know, you buy nicer clothes,
- 16:51Speaker 2: you buy more expensive makeup, you maybe order in more
- 16:53Speaker 2: because you're super busy. Look at those things, order and
- 16:57Speaker 2: be realistic. I know that it can feel like takeing
- 17:00Speaker 2: a step backwards where you go, oh, well, you know,
- 17:02Speaker 2: I was buying clothes from really nice shops and now
- 17:05Speaker 2: I'm shopping at Target or whatever, and that can feel
- 17:08Speaker 2: like a downgrade. However, there's firstly, Target is signing the
- 17:12Speaker 2: clothing department right now. They're doing a really good job.
- 17:14Speaker 2: But also that's the reality of making it work. If
- 17:18Speaker 2: you really have tightened your belt to the point where
- 17:20Speaker 2: two hundred and eighty thousand dollars is not covering your
- 17:24Speaker 2: expenses and your mortgages and stuff, then I think you
- 17:27Speaker 2: do you need to go, Okay, well, what can I change?
- 17:29Speaker 2: Moving your parents out. I'm assuming it's probably the least
- 17:32Speaker 2: likely to happen, just because that's very disruptive. So can
- 17:36Speaker 2: you downgrade your own house? Can you look at what's
- 17:40Speaker 2: happening with the business you purchased. Was the purchase of
- 17:42Speaker 2: that business the best choice for where you are in
- 17:45Speaker 2: life right now, was the purchase of the business with
- 17:48Speaker 2: the intention that you would then move full time into
- 17:50Speaker 2: that business. Is that business eating up your time and
- 17:52Speaker 2: making you feel stressed because you're saying you're feeling really
- 17:55Speaker 2: burnt out? Is that because you are working a full
- 17:57Speaker 2: time job and working.
- 17:58Speaker 3: On this business.
- 17:59Speaker 2: What does that look like? I know that it's not
- 18:02Speaker 2: a small, easy thing to buy and sell a business,
- 18:05Speaker 2: but it may be that that's something that you look
- 18:08Speaker 2: at and go, Okay, well is this right for my
- 18:10Speaker 2: season of life right now? Or you may look at
- 18:13Speaker 2: everything and I hate to be not on your side.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Obviously we're on your side, But sometimes the reality is
- 18:21Speaker 2: that you are burnt out and you just got to
- 18:23Speaker 2: push through it. And I don't want to say that
- 18:26Speaker 2: lightly because I know that burnout is really all consuming
- 18:29Speaker 2: and it is really hard to live with. And I
- 18:31Speaker 2: always want you guys to be prioritizing your health. But
- 18:34Speaker 2: if you are saying to me that ultimately you can't
- 18:38Speaker 2: adjust your financial situational like if you go, I can't
- 18:40Speaker 2: sell the business. I'm already living in a small house.
- 18:43Speaker 2: I definitely can't move my parents out. I can't cut
- 18:46Speaker 2: my expenses at all. Then you need to either find
- 18:48Speaker 2: another job that pays you a comparable salary, or you
- 18:52Speaker 2: need to find a way to make your existing job work.
- 18:54Speaker 2: I think the suggestion of hybrid work or working for
- 18:57Speaker 2: home is a great one. Working from home for me
- 19:00Speaker 2: has made my work life balance feel significantly easier to manage.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Is that an option in the job that you have
- 19:06Speaker 2: currently using the leave also a really great situation. I'm
- 19:09Speaker 2: sure other people have probably got other suggestions, but to me,
- 19:13Speaker 2: it's kind of black and white, like you either can
- 19:15Speaker 2: make this situation work as it is, or you need
- 19:18Speaker 2: to change the situation. Yeah, I don't know. I feel
- 19:20Speaker 2: like that's not the most helpful advice, but it you know,
- 19:23Speaker 2: to be pragmatic, and I think this is actually a
- 19:25Speaker 2: very good example to people of as your income grows,
- 19:29Speaker 2: I think it can be really tempting to do lots
- 19:33Speaker 2: of things like buying your parents a home is incredible
- 19:36Speaker 2: and kind and so wonderful. Buying a business, which I'm
- 19:39Speaker 2: assuming was with the outlook of that bringing you income
- 19:42Speaker 2: at some point really wonderful, really admirable, fantastic ideas. However,
- 19:48Speaker 2: it feels like maybe you've bitten off a bit more
- 19:49Speaker 2: than you can chew all at once, and it's taking
- 19:52Speaker 2: its toll, and it probably is worth just reminding people here.
- 19:56Speaker 2: You know, having all of these things is great. Having
- 19:58Speaker 2: all of these goals and these ambitions is wonderful, Like
- 20:00Speaker 2: taking these steps is fantastic, But you've got to make
- 20:03Speaker 2: sure that you can do everything that you're taking on,
- 20:06Speaker 2: because otherwise it is going to run your body down,
- 20:08Speaker 2: and that's really hard.
- 20:09Speaker 3: To deal with totally. I guess the last thing I
- 20:11Speaker 3: want to say is maybe you can move in with
- 20:13Speaker 3: your parents or you can go into a sharehouse. And
- 20:14Speaker 3: I know it doesn't sound like this person might that's
- 20:16Speaker 3: a great idea, but I think share house are so
- 20:18Speaker 3: much fun. Or moving with your parents if they're close enough.
- 20:21Speaker 2: I meant that was a good idea. I mean the
- 20:22Speaker 2: sharehouse is also a good idea, But I feel like,
- 20:24Speaker 2: if you're already paying them all for your parents, can
- 20:26Speaker 2: you move in like awesomeone? Like do they have a
- 20:29Speaker 2: spare room that you could I know, again not ideal.
- 20:31Speaker 2: You might feel a bit like you're going backwards, but
- 20:33Speaker 2: if we need to lose one of the mortgages, that's
- 20:35Speaker 2: a great way to do it all with you totally.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly exactly. And then that way you can kind
- 20:41Speaker 3: of like get rid of some of your furniture sell it,
- 20:43Speaker 3: make more money. Oh my god, maybe that's an idea.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:46Speaker 3: So well, I hope this has been helpful, but keep
- 20:48Speaker 3: on keeping on and make sure you are taking your
- 20:50Speaker 3: mental health seriously burnt. Yeahs exactly to say is really
- 20:54Speaker 3: really hard. So we're thinking of you genuinely.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and if you've accumulated sickly, I remember that you
- 20:58Speaker 2: can use that to take mental health days. Yes, well,
- 21:01Speaker 2: very important, very look after yourself, and that's absolutely an
- 21:04Speaker 2: option that's available to you. But should we get into.
- 21:06Speaker 3: This we DM Yeah.
- 21:08Speaker 2: This week you guys sent our inbox with a dilemma
- 21:10Speaker 2: that says a little something like this, Hi, ladies, I've
- 21:13Speaker 2: got a money dilemma and I need to know am
- 21:16Speaker 2: I the asshole? My parents, completely out of the blue
- 21:19Speaker 2: and with no consultation, bought my partner and I two
- 21:22Speaker 2: nights accommodation in Tasmania for Christmas. We live in Melbourne.
- 21:26Speaker 2: We didn't ask for it, didn't hint at it, and
- 21:28Speaker 2: it wasn't something we were planning or budgeting for at all.
- 21:31Speaker 2: To be honest, I'm feeling a little bit annoyed. It's
- 21:34Speaker 2: not in our plans or our holiday budget for next year,
- 21:36Speaker 2: but now it feels like it has to be otherwise
- 21:38Speaker 2: they lose their money if we go. We'd have to
- 21:41Speaker 2: pay for flights or take the boat, plus all of
- 21:44Speaker 2: the other costs that come with a trip to Tasmania.
- 21:46Speaker 2: I feel ungrateful for even thinking this way, but it
- 21:48Speaker 2: also feels like a gift that comes with a financial
- 21:50Speaker 2: obligation we didn't agree to. Am I being unreasonable for
- 21:54Speaker 2: not wanting to go? Not all?
- 21:56Speaker 3: But it's giving one of in a lie lottery or
- 22:00Speaker 3: something a hundred Why would you?
- 22:04Speaker 2: It's one thing if you'd been saying, oh, I've always
- 22:06Speaker 2: which like is me, I've always wanted to go to Tasmania.
- 22:09Speaker 2: I'd love to go da da Like put me on
- 22:12Speaker 2: the boat, you know what I mean? Like say it
- 22:13Speaker 2: a little captain the rest or something beautiful. If someone
- 22:16Speaker 2: gave me that cube like that makes perfect sence. I
- 22:18Speaker 2: feel like I've said to like fifteen people I really
- 22:20Speaker 2: want to go to e'ven ever mentioned in your life?
- 22:24Speaker 2: Where is this come from?
- 22:26Speaker 4: Random?
- 22:26Speaker 3: So we got you like two nights stay in Mozambique
- 22:28Speaker 3: because like, okay, good luck to yourself. That's just so
- 22:32Speaker 3: random and it's so like, yeah, it will cost you money.
- 22:34Speaker 3: But I want to come back to what the actual
- 22:37Speaker 3: question is because this is so annoyed when people say this,
- 22:39Speaker 3: what I'm about to say, like the I don't want
- 22:41Speaker 3: to sound all toxic positivity, but I do want to say, like,
- 22:45Speaker 3: it definitely can work. Flights to Hobart are always on sale.
- 22:48Speaker 3: It's so so cheap. Sometimes I saw literally a flight
- 22:51Speaker 3: was like forty dollars or something return, and so it
- 22:54Speaker 3: is possible. I know, probably right now when you're in
- 22:57Speaker 3: this headspace and you're like you're just annoyed, like I
- 22:59Speaker 3: only want to look at the flights because like, why
- 23:01Speaker 3: the hell did you get this for me? I'm not
- 23:02Speaker 3: even thinking about how I can make this work because
- 23:04Speaker 3: that's so annoying, which is very valid and very annoying.
- 23:08Speaker 2: So many other costs. Though I know you're gonna need
- 23:10Speaker 2: a car, You need a car.
- 23:11Speaker 3: You don't need to buy the food food.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Yeah, literally all of those things.
- 23:15Speaker 3: It's crazy if you ever get to a point where
- 23:17Speaker 3: you're like not annoyed anymore and you're like, Okay, then
- 23:20Speaker 3: just know this is possible and oh my god, you
- 23:22Speaker 3: wanna have so much fun if you do go. But
- 23:23Speaker 3: coming back to this, yeah, you could be annoyed. It
- 23:27Speaker 3: feels like they maybe want it in a raffle or
- 23:29Speaker 3: something like they won this somehow. It just feels so random,
- 23:35Speaker 3: and so I think you have every right to be annoyed,
- 23:38Speaker 3: because yes, it is like kind of is a financial burden,
- 23:40Speaker 3: it's a lovely thought. It's probably something like unless they've
- 23:45Speaker 3: argued it in this way where it's like, oh, someone's
- 23:48Speaker 3: secretly proposing to you and we're just like kind of
- 23:50Speaker 3: the messengers and you know they're trying to black Yeah,
- 23:54Speaker 3: like maybe maybe there's a reason that they can't tell
- 23:56Speaker 3: you about, but it doesn't feel like right now, so
- 24:00Speaker 3: like there could be a secret reason why you have
- 24:02Speaker 3: to go there. But if it, maybe they want it,
- 24:04Speaker 3: or maybe they're like, oh, well we'll just get them
- 24:06Speaker 3: some Look, there's things on sale. We'll just like get
- 24:08Speaker 3: them some tickets to a hotel randomly for Christmas. Then
- 24:11Speaker 3: they're not probably so attached to it that they wouldn't
- 24:13Speaker 3: be upset if you were like, hey, actually this is crazy.
- 24:16Speaker 3: I can't afford to go to Tasmania. So how about
- 24:19Speaker 3: we give this to someone else, or you gift them
- 24:21Speaker 3: to someone else. If you hear of anyone going to Tasmania,
- 24:24Speaker 3: you'd be like, oh my god, you could do I
- 24:25Speaker 3: we couldn't go anymore. Do you want to buy these
- 24:27Speaker 3: off us? Or here's a gift from me to you?
- 24:30Speaker 3: Happy early Christmas, Happy early Christmas. So yeah, you're any
- 24:34Speaker 3: want specifically going to Tasmania, specifically at Christmas. But I
- 24:39Speaker 3: think you have every right to be annoyed.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Basically, yeah, it doesn't feel like a very thoughtful gift. Sure,
- 24:43Speaker 2: and I know that I'm very much That's a heell
- 24:46Speaker 2: that I will die on is that a gift is
- 24:47Speaker 2: a gift and that why don't know I say this earlier.
- 24:50Speaker 2: The hill that I will die on is that a
- 24:53Speaker 2: gift should not be judged against any standard, right, like, yeah,
- 24:56Speaker 2: do you know what I mean? A gift is given
- 24:58Speaker 2: with love and thought. I have a friend who as
- 25:00Speaker 2: a grandma who has gotten on in years, and she
- 25:03Speaker 2: gives things that make their way back to the op
- 25:05Speaker 2: shop pretty quickly, we'll say, however, they're given with love,
- 25:09Speaker 2: and it's like you've always got to appreciate that a
- 25:10Speaker 2: gift is given with love. I stand behind that. I'm
- 25:12Speaker 2: on that hill firmly waving to you people down below. However,
- 25:17Speaker 2: I will also say that just because you've received a
- 25:20Speaker 2: gift doesn't mean you're under any obligation to use it. Yes,
- 25:23Speaker 2: so that you can take this gift and say thank you,
- 25:25Speaker 2: I appreciate that it was given with thought. Maybe they've
- 25:27Speaker 2: just been to Tasmania and they've got oh, you know
- 25:29Speaker 2: who would love this the kids. However, you're absolutely within
- 25:34Speaker 2: your rights to not want to spend money to use
- 25:37Speaker 2: a gift, and I think that applies broadly, same as
- 25:39Speaker 2: the puppy analogy we use earlier, same as you know anything.
- 25:42Speaker 2: I think that you are well within your right to
- 25:44Speaker 2: appreciate the thought that it was given with, but not
- 25:46Speaker 2: make use of it. What I would personally do if
- 25:48Speaker 2: that was the case. If you are in a place
- 25:50Speaker 2: where you go it just doesn't feel worth the trip,
- 25:53Speaker 2: or we do not have the funds to spend on
- 25:55Speaker 2: the additional things that we need to spend on, or
- 25:57Speaker 2: whatever the reasoning is and you absolutely not going to
- 26:00Speaker 2: use it. There are two things I would do. Firstly,
- 26:03Speaker 2: is it a hotel chain? If so, can you transfer
- 26:05Speaker 2: the accommodation to somewhere you do want to go?
- 26:07Speaker 3: True?
- 26:08Speaker 2: You know, if it falls under like a lot of
- 26:10Speaker 2: hotel chains will allow you to move with enough notice
- 26:13Speaker 2: to a different hotel, in which case problem solved. Staycation, staycation,
- 26:17Speaker 2: do something in Melbourne, or you know, did you have
- 26:19Speaker 2: plans to go to city or did you have plans
- 26:20Speaker 2: to go somewhere else? If they say on your list
- 26:22Speaker 2: you can use it, that you would you know you
- 26:24Speaker 2: would want to. Also, potentially you could contact them and
- 26:27Speaker 2: see if they can extend the expiry. I'm pretty sure
- 26:31Speaker 2: now vouchers have to last a minimum of two years,
- 26:33Speaker 2: so double check that. And also a lot of places
- 26:36Speaker 2: are really fantastic If you say, hey, I receive this
- 26:38Speaker 2: as a gift, we aren't able to use it by
- 26:40Speaker 2: the date. Is there any chance of extending Some companies
- 26:43Speaker 2: are really good and we'll do that for you. Don't ask,
- 26:45Speaker 2: don't get there's no harm in trying. The third thing
- 26:48Speaker 2: I would do with if those first two things don't
- 26:49Speaker 2: work for you is go back to your parents and say, hey,
- 26:53Speaker 2: really grateful for the gift, we're not going to be
- 26:56Speaker 2: able to use it. Would you like to use it instead,
- 26:58Speaker 2: or do you know somebody else and kind of let
- 27:01Speaker 2: them know, you know, is there a way for them
- 27:03Speaker 2: to cancel and get the money back, or is there
- 27:05Speaker 2: an opportunity for them to find it a home use
- 27:08Speaker 2: it themselves. Also give them maybe a little bit of
- 27:11Speaker 2: awareness as to why it wasn't a good gift. Yes,
- 27:15Speaker 2: there must have been some reason that they picked it, unless,
- 27:17Speaker 2: as you said, they want it in a raffle or
- 27:19Speaker 2: whatever and they just went, oh, they'll use it. Yes.
- 27:23Speaker 2: I think you don't have to worry about wasting their
- 27:27Speaker 2: money because you're not obliged to use it. But there
- 27:30Speaker 2: are lots of things that you can do to offload
- 27:33Speaker 2: it responsibly, I guess, so to speak. If that makes
- 27:36Speaker 2: sense totally.
- 27:37Speaker 3: That definitely makes sense, and it's sounding like it's less.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Of a voucher.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Maybe they went on and purchased those dates, which I
- 27:44Speaker 3: think is also totally fine. I feel like that kind
- 27:46Speaker 3: of even gives you more leeway in terms of like
- 27:49Speaker 3: changing the dates and things like that. I feel like
- 27:52Speaker 3: it'd be easy to do that then change the date
- 27:54Speaker 3: of expiring on a voucher, you know what I mean. So,
- 27:57Speaker 3: and then the other thing you do is sell on
- 27:59Speaker 3: there's like last minute trips or whatever where you like
- 28:01Speaker 3: sell or like auction off your trip details, holiday whatever.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Check it up on Facebook, marketplace, facebook group. There are
- 28:09Speaker 2: probably lots of places that you could maybe get like
- 28:10Speaker 2: a portion of it back. But ultimately I think you
- 28:13Speaker 2: were not the assholes. Yes, yes, but we did, of
- 28:16Speaker 2: course ask everybody else what they thought. So the first
- 28:18Speaker 2: question we asked was what would you do if you
- 28:20Speaker 2: were our community member. Fifty percent of you said you
- 28:23Speaker 2: would rework your plans and enjoy the gift, Twenty four
- 28:26Speaker 2: percent of you said I would be honest and say
- 28:28Speaker 2: that it's outside of our budget, nineteen percent of you
- 28:31Speaker 2: said I would transfer the accommodation to somebody else, and
- 28:34Speaker 2: six percent of you said you would reluctantly go to
- 28:36Speaker 2: avoid the drama. Next, we asked, is a gift really
- 28:40Speaker 2: a gift if it costs the recipient money to use it?
- 28:43Speaker 2: Forty eight percent of you said only if it was
- 28:45Speaker 2: agreed upon first, twenty nine percent of you said it
- 28:48Speaker 2: depends on the amount of money. Thirteen percent of you
- 28:52Speaker 2: said no, that's a financial obligation, and ten percent of
- 28:55Speaker 2: you said yes, it's okay if there are costs involved.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Comb and then finally, of course, we said what are
- 29:02Speaker 2: your two cents? We've got lots of responses. Somebody said,
- 29:04Speaker 2: mubun to Tasmania has to be one of the cheapest
- 29:06Speaker 2: flight routes in Australia. Take the money, win a free accommodation. Hmm,
- 29:10Speaker 2: sounds like back got in the DMS. Someone else said,
- 29:13Speaker 2: if there are birthdays or special events between now and then,
- 29:15Speaker 2: ask for money to cover the flash for if they
- 29:20Speaker 2: keep some giving. Somebody said, call the hotel and see
- 29:22Speaker 2: if it can be moved further out to allow them
- 29:24Speaker 2: to save for the trip. One person said, my mother
- 29:27Speaker 2: in law does this and it's a form of her
- 29:29Speaker 2: pushing boundaries. So yues It also does depend on the relationship.
- 29:34Speaker 3: That you have and their intention, like maybe they're just
- 29:37Speaker 3: being passaga.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Sorry, well, you know what, Like we always like to
- 29:40Speaker 2: assume the best in people, but you know there are
- 29:42Speaker 2: people out there who do operate in that way. It's
- 29:44Speaker 2: always a possibility.
- 29:45Speaker 4: True.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Somebody said, no, really like this. It's okay to disappoint
- 29:48Speaker 2: others when it comes to your finances, yeah, which I
- 29:52Speaker 2: think is very true, Like you don't owe anybody anything,
- 29:55Speaker 2: you don't owe it to them to use it, and
- 29:58Speaker 2: if you disappoint them, like, that's okay. That's how it is. Absolutely.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Somebody else said it could be the trip of a lifetime.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Just do it.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Find the cheapest flight and the cheapest eats. Someone said,
- 30:08Speaker 2: I'll buy them off them, So maybe we can hold
- 30:10Speaker 2: my guys on this could be like the perfect little way.
- 30:14Speaker 2: And last person said, gift it back to them, So that.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Would be so funny.
- 30:18Speaker 2: If you're like, happy birthday, I got you a combination,
- 30:24Speaker 2: See how you like, it becomes like one of those
- 30:26Speaker 2: meme presents that just goes back and forth.
- 30:28Speaker 3: Yeah, well after the expiry as well as but I
- 30:32Speaker 3: think that's a really good place to leave it.
- 30:34Speaker 2: I think so as well. We'll do our best in
- 30:35Speaker 2: the background to hook those two people up if we
- 30:37Speaker 2: can make work for everybody want a dream. But otherwise,
