- 0:00Speaker 1: She's on the Money.
- 0:02Speaker 2: She's on the Money.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 0:26Speaker 3: for millennials who want financial freedom. My name is Tony Lodge,
- 0:30Speaker 3: and joining me for another shotback Money Diary is Victoria Devine.
- 0:34Speaker 4: Hello, Hello, my friend. How are you?
- 0:37Speaker 1: I'm good?
- 0:38Speaker 2: Thank you. I'm very excited about this money Diary.
- 0:40Speaker 1: As always, I don't know.
- 0:41Speaker 4: What it's about yet, Tony, you always keep the goods
- 0:44Speaker 4: to yourself until it's almost too late. I do.
- 0:48Speaker 2: But do you want me to read the email?
- 0:49Speaker 4: I really want you to read the email out. Let's
- 0:52Speaker 4: go all.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Right, here we go.
- 0:54Speaker 3: After my eleven year relationship ended January twenty twenty, I
- 0:58Speaker 3: did up and sold our home while still living in
- 1:00Speaker 3: it with my ex, took my profit and my dog,
- 1:02Speaker 3: and started fresh.
- 1:04Speaker 2: For the first time ever. I learned to budget.
- 1:06Speaker 3: I saved all the money needed to move without dipping
- 1:09Speaker 3: into savings.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Oh that's actually really impressive.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I invested in an American Classic car and am saving
- 1:16Speaker 3: to have financial security while I transitioned to director of
- 1:19Speaker 3: the family business solo and buy my own industrial SHD.
- 1:23Speaker 4: This is not where I saw that email going when
- 1:25Speaker 4: you said, oh it broke up with my partner of
- 1:27Speaker 4: eleven years. I was like, okay, cool, Like no, this
- 1:30Speaker 4: is a hustler. I love this.
- 1:32Speaker 3: She's living her best life and we have her on
- 1:34Speaker 3: the phone at the moment. Hello money, Diaris, you didn't.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Even need your partner. I love that.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Well, apparently the partner was weighing you down, is what
- 1:42Speaker 3: I'm hearing.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Feel like it. So let's get straight into a money dirry.
- 1:50Speaker 4: As always, We've got some structured questions and then I
- 1:52Speaker 4: have some perfect questions that I'm going to want to
- 1:55Speaker 4: ask you at the end. So first things first, what
- 1:58Speaker 4: is your attitude awards money?
- 2:01Speaker 5: My attitude towards money is a combination of security and freedom.
- 2:07Speaker 5: So if I have money, I have security to know
- 2:11Speaker 5: that I can get myself out of trouble, I can
- 2:14Speaker 5: take care of my pet, I can make sure I
- 2:15Speaker 5: have a roof over my head, and I have the
- 2:18Speaker 5: freedom to make whatever choices I want to make.
- 2:22Speaker 4: I love that and I feel like that's so important
- 2:24Speaker 4: as well. Has that been something that you've always had
- 2:27Speaker 4: or is that a new found view of money or
- 2:30Speaker 4: is this just something that's been ingrained in your money
- 2:32Speaker 4: story from the beginning.
- 2:35Speaker 5: I think a bit of a combination. So I work
- 2:39Speaker 5: for my family business. My dad has worked ridiculously hard
- 2:42Speaker 5: my whole life, so I was always used to knowing
- 2:46Speaker 5: that money was always there. So but the money allowed
- 2:49Speaker 5: us to have the life we had, but it meant
- 2:52Speaker 5: working hard to be able to afford to have that.
- 2:54Speaker 5: But at the same time, the security probably only came
- 2:57Speaker 5: for me when I was in my twenties. I moved
- 3:00Speaker 5: to the UK, and there were loads of times like
- 3:03Speaker 5: I was only legally supposed to be working for a
- 3:05Speaker 5: small period of time, so I was Yeah.
- 3:07Speaker 4: I been a bit cheeky.
- 3:08Speaker 1: I had to make Yeah, been a bit cheeky, and
- 3:10Speaker 1: I needed There were times.
- 3:11Speaker 5: When I run out of money and I remember being
- 3:14Speaker 5: in taxis and going out for the night and only
- 3:17Speaker 5: having like five pounds going. I don't know how I'm
- 3:19Speaker 5: going to get myself home, but I'm going to go
- 3:21Speaker 5: and live my best life anyway.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Oh, I remember being that. I think the nail and
- 3:27Speaker 1: the coffin was. I was in London. I worked in
- 3:30Speaker 1: the music industry.
- 3:31Speaker 5: I was in London and I had to try and
- 3:33Speaker 5: get myself back to where I lived, which was like
- 3:36Speaker 5: two hours train ride away, and I literally had one
- 3:40Speaker 5: train ticket and I didn't know what trains I was
- 3:43Speaker 5: supposed to get on, and I have five pounds in
- 3:45Speaker 5: my purse and I had to figure out how to
- 3:47Speaker 5: get home. And I think the fear of running out
- 3:50Speaker 5: of money just scared the hell out of me, and
- 3:53Speaker 5: it stuck ever since. So I always like to see
- 3:57Speaker 5: X amount of money in my account.
- 3:58Speaker 1: It's obsessive, but.
- 4:01Speaker 4: That is okay because I feel like you've learnt from
- 4:04Speaker 4: that experience. And it's funny because I've actually heard that
- 4:07Speaker 4: from a number of people that there's this point in
- 4:10Speaker 4: time where it was the line in the sand. It
- 4:13Speaker 4: was then I'm going to learn how to budget, or
- 4:15Speaker 4: I'm going to change the way I'm doing this. I
- 4:17Speaker 4: can't keep doing this, because I'm sure it wasn't the
- 4:20Speaker 4: first time that you'd had five pounds in your person.
- 4:23Speaker 4: You went out and found your way home, but there's
- 4:25Speaker 4: always this line in the sand right where you're like, oh, away,
- 4:29Speaker 4: this can't keep happening. This is too stressful or too much,
- 4:32Speaker 4: or something has changed and I need to get it together.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:36Speaker 5: Well that was a really long time ago, and I
- 4:38Speaker 5: still didn't learn how to budget.
- 4:39Speaker 1: After that.
- 4:40Speaker 5: I just made sure I didn't spend money like I
- 4:43Speaker 5: just had more money.
- 4:45Speaker 1: I just had more money.
- 4:46Speaker 5: I was just like, I'll just stop buying stuff and
- 4:48Speaker 5: make sure that this money stays where it is.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And then yeah, that was it.
- 4:54Speaker 5: The fear of not being able to get home and
- 4:56Speaker 5: being secure and knowing I.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Could do what I wanted to do. It changed everything.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Okay, so what do you do for work and how
- 5:05Speaker 4: much money do you earn?
- 5:07Speaker 1: I'm an electrician, I'm not really fool.
- 5:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm actually now also a company director and I
- 5:18Speaker 5: currently earn ninety thousand plus vehicles on a phone.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Whoa very awesome. Yeah, so is that working with your family?
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that's smoking of my family, and.
- 5:31Speaker 2: You're about to become the director of that business.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Is that right?
- 5:34Speaker 5: As of July first, I'm co director of the company.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Oh, she's fancy. How Like? I obviously run a business,
- 5:45Speaker 4: but I don't do that with my family. I think
- 5:47Speaker 4: I would go up the hall. How do you manage that?
- 5:49Speaker 4: My friend?
- 5:50Speaker 1: Well, it's really easy when it's just me and my dad.
- 5:52Speaker 5: It was harder when actually that exit I broke up
- 5:55Speaker 5: with last year. He and I also used to work together.
- 6:00Speaker 5: These days, it seems easier. My dad is incredibly relaxed,
- 6:04Speaker 5: so he makes it easy.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Yeah, that is so nice. I feel like my parents
- 6:09Speaker 4: would be that way. But sorry, Alex, I feel like
- 6:12Speaker 4: if my sister and I went into business together, we'd
- 6:15Speaker 4: just revert to being that thirteen and sixteen year old
- 6:17Speaker 4: who wanted to bite each other's head off.
- 6:19Speaker 2: I don't think there's a lot of sisters that could
- 6:21Speaker 2: do it.
- 6:23Speaker 4: I'm not those sisters, Like I love her dearly now,
- 6:26Speaker 4: but like that's how it would go if we went
- 6:28Speaker 4: into business together.
- 6:29Speaker 5: I feel, yeah, my I don't have anything to do
- 6:32Speaker 5: with the company business.
- 6:33Speaker 4: I'm not how we go out, but we don't love you.
- 6:38Speaker 4: It's that we love you too much.
- 6:40Speaker 1: If we love you from a distance.
- 6:45Speaker 4: All right, money, Diaris, Do you currently have a big
- 6:48Speaker 4: money goal?
- 6:49Speaker 1: I do.
- 6:51Speaker 5: Last year I declared I was going to save one
- 6:53Speaker 5: hundred thousand dollars for a deposit, and I decided that
- 6:58Speaker 5: I wanted to buy an industrial.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, I figure I can live anywhere, but.
- 7:04Speaker 5: A lot of my customers are based in a certain spot,
- 7:07Speaker 5: so if I can keep my work roaders, I can
- 7:09Speaker 5: live anywhere.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I like.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Oh, I love that, And how are you tracking for
- 7:14Speaker 4: that goal?
- 7:15Speaker 1: I'm at the halfway mark.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Oh already yeah, so fifty grand yeah.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Oh god, congratulations, thanks What a hustler. I thought you
- 7:27Speaker 4: were going to say, yeah, like we're getting there, like no, halfway,
- 7:31Speaker 4: oh halfway.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:33Speaker 5: Last year, when I were my household, I decided, I
- 7:37Speaker 5: was like, I want to I'm going to buy something
- 7:39Speaker 5: and I'm going to put down a damn big deposit
- 7:41Speaker 5: for that. And a friends of mine were like, you know,
- 7:43Speaker 5: one hundred thousands a lot of money. I'm like, yep,
- 7:45Speaker 5: I'm coming for it.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Yes you are, and you're already halfway there. And I
- 7:51Speaker 4: love that this story has already gone from like yeah, sorry,
- 7:54Speaker 4: there was this time that I had five pounds in
- 7:56Speaker 4: my purse and that was literally it to like me
- 7:59Speaker 4: just a casual fifty g's sitting in my account. And
- 8:02Speaker 4: also I only recently decided to start saving that, all right.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Next question, do you currently have any investments?
- 8:12Speaker 1: I This one's funny.
- 8:13Speaker 5: I actually have a little bit in spaceship, but my
- 8:18Speaker 5: dad has been doing share trading since oh the early
- 8:21Speaker 5: two thousands, so sorry, my dad's been doing shared trading
- 8:26Speaker 5: since the early two thousands. So I've actually had my
- 8:30Speaker 5: eye on a certain stock for the past month.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Also, I was going to dive bulge what that stock.
- 8:38Speaker 5: Is I can it's probably I think it's controversial.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I know a lot of people probably wouldn't agree with
- 8:45Speaker 1: the choice.
- 8:46Speaker 4: I want to hear it.
- 8:48Speaker 5: Yeah, so I'm actually looking at BHP shares.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Oh okay, And why is that? I love asking people
- 8:55Speaker 4: when they're being specific about shares about like why would
- 8:58Speaker 4: you look at that? Or what is your mote? Because
- 9:00Speaker 4: we're all different, And to be honest, HP have been
- 9:03Speaker 4: a pretty well performing share over the last what thirty
- 9:07Speaker 4: forty years, So I don't think it's the worst thing
- 9:09Speaker 4: to look at.
- 9:11Speaker 1: No, it's not.
- 9:12Speaker 5: And at the moment, since they had the deal with Woodside,
- 9:16Speaker 5: the share starts to go down, and then obviously everything
- 9:18Speaker 5: else in the economy is going down. I chose it
- 9:22Speaker 5: because I've been looking last year. So when I sold
- 9:24Speaker 5: my house, I went right, sell the house. I'm investing.
- 9:27Speaker 5: I'm going to invest in bank shares. But selling a
- 9:30Speaker 5: house setting up a whole new life life got away
- 9:32Speaker 5: with me and I just didn't. So then I came
- 9:37Speaker 5: back to it this year and just couldn't pick anything.
- 9:39Speaker 1: And I figured, you know what, you're in.
- 9:40Speaker 5: A trade, you're in an industry, stick with something that
- 9:44Speaker 5: makes sense to you this I work in industrial electrical
- 9:48Speaker 5: so this sort of stuff's probably more down my alley.
- 9:51Speaker 5: And a friend of mine said, have you looked at
- 9:53Speaker 5: doing like BEHP or something like that, And I went, oh, okay,
- 9:56Speaker 5: I'll start looking, and that's what planned the seed and
- 9:59Speaker 5: then I I just spent hours looking.
- 10:02Speaker 4: See there's always a reason. There's never like, oh, someone
- 10:05Speaker 4: just told me to look at it. There's always like
- 10:07Speaker 4: a background, And from my perspective, that creates a better
- 10:11Speaker 4: long term strategy because you're going to be more invested
- 10:14Speaker 4: in it. You're going to be more invested in researching
- 10:17Speaker 4: that stock and understanding it and comprehending it in a
- 10:19Speaker 4: way that other people might not be as educated because
- 10:23Speaker 4: I don't work in that space. You do, so you
- 10:25Speaker 4: know what's going on or what might be impacting that industry.
- 10:29Speaker 4: So I think it's really important to one understand why
- 10:31Speaker 4: other people pick things, but also kind of helps you
- 10:35Speaker 4: guide into like, ah, well, actually I might pick something
- 10:39Speaker 4: that I know really well because you're usually going to
- 10:41Speaker 4: feel a little bit more comfortable with it. And the
- 10:44Speaker 4: best type of investing is the type that doesn't stress
- 10:47Speaker 4: you out.
- 10:49Speaker 5: When I like it and all that sort of stuff,
- 10:51Speaker 5: I'm like, I have no idea.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Yeah, let's stick with something you know.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Let's go with what you know. I love that. Next
- 10:59Speaker 4: question in left field and completely different to what we
- 11:03Speaker 4: were just talking about. Do you currently use shop back?
- 11:06Speaker 1: I don't.
- 11:07Speaker 5: I do have it on my phone, I have my
- 11:09Speaker 5: ten dollars from you guys, thank you, But I don't
- 11:15Speaker 5: actually buy lots of stuff. I buy parts of my
- 11:19Speaker 5: truck and the odd thing off eBay, but I don't
- 11:22Speaker 5: do heaps for shopping.
- 11:24Speaker 4: I love that because that's probably a good money habit
- 11:26Speaker 4: for you to have any way to not do too
- 11:29Speaker 4: much shopping, unlike me, who is a very proficient online shopper.
- 11:33Speaker 4: The postman tonight we're on first name basis, and my
- 11:38Speaker 4: shop back account's looking rather healthy, which is really good.
- 11:42Speaker 4: But also, I mean, as much as we love shopback,
- 11:44Speaker 4: that means I've been a little bit cheeky during lockdown.
- 11:47Speaker 4: So we'll move on from that so that I don't
- 11:50Speaker 4: bury myself, and we're going to ask you what is
- 11:52Speaker 4: your best money habit.
- 11:55Speaker 5: My best money habit not online shopping, not online shop,
- 12:00Speaker 5: although I do I do buy a lot of stuff
- 12:02Speaker 5: from America Express posts.
- 12:04Speaker 1: It's not that's expensive. It is, and especially when their
- 12:09Speaker 1: car parts, it's really.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Expensive, expensive and heavy.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Yes, my best habit would be. I'm a bit frugal
- 12:18Speaker 1: to the point it's probably a detriment.
- 12:20Speaker 5: Sometimes I'll put things in baskets or brighten on a
- 12:23Speaker 5: list to buy, and then I just go, I'll do
- 12:25Speaker 5: that tomorrow. Like wait when my pay goes in, I'll
- 12:28Speaker 5: do it tomorrow. Money is sitting there, it's not a problem.
- 12:30Speaker 5: I'll do it tomorrow. Or I Actually, I'm amazing. If
- 12:34Speaker 5: you ever want to know what the cheapest thing to
- 12:35Speaker 5: buy the shops would be, I can tell you what
- 12:38Speaker 5: grocery still to go to to get the best thing.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Alright, what's this week? Come on? Oh?
- 12:44Speaker 5: Actually, one friend of mine and I were talking about
- 12:46Speaker 5: because I do. I go to the gym a lot,
- 12:48Speaker 5: and one of my pre training snacks is like lcms
- 12:51Speaker 5: And we've calculated CMS from Aldi a minimum of twenty
- 12:56Speaker 5: cents cheap of per bar, depending if you get them
- 12:59Speaker 5: money sale. See, so like little things like that were
- 13:02Speaker 5: like last year when I had to figure out how
- 13:04Speaker 5: to save money. I was trying to find ways to
- 13:07Speaker 5: save one dollar and two dollars, not forty and eighty.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Yeah, but like from the little things, big things grow.
- 13:14Speaker 4: And I feel like that's a very used phrase on
- 13:17Speaker 4: this podcast. But at the same time, it's because it's
- 13:20Speaker 4: easier to do that than to look for the big wins, right, Like,
- 13:23Speaker 4: it's easier to take control of your grocery budget and
- 13:26Speaker 4: look for where you can make little sustainable savings because like,
- 13:30Speaker 4: I'm sure you enjoy your elcmbar from Audi as much
- 13:33Speaker 4: as you do from coals right.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Exactly at four am, they both sat the same.
- 13:39Speaker 4: I always thought like completely separate. I always thought you
- 13:42Speaker 4: had to have like proper like protein bars and like
- 13:45Speaker 4: pre training stacks, and you're like lcmbar, So maybe I
- 13:48Speaker 4: could get into this workout there, Maybe I might do this.
- 13:52Speaker 5: My dietitian has me on, like I get to have
- 13:55Speaker 5: crumpets and honey or lcm's before training. It's great, And
- 14:00Speaker 5: that's dietitian has given that to me. So that's totally okay.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Yeah, that makes it legal. I like it. I like
- 14:07Speaker 4: it all right. In comparison to your best money habit,
- 14:10Speaker 4: which was the LCN bars, what is your worst money habit?
- 14:15Speaker 5: Probably similar that I leave things in shopping carts, and
- 14:20Speaker 5: I don't go buy things, and then I actually really
- 14:23Speaker 5: need them, and I rush around.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Like an idiot when I need them, so I be like,
- 14:30Speaker 1: why didn't I buy that I really needed it?
- 14:33Speaker 3: And then instead of buying it online, you have to
- 14:35Speaker 3: go and buy it from the shop, and it's probably
- 14:37Speaker 3: more expensive as well.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Instead of yep, yeah, I can feel that.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like I do that as well. Do
- 14:43Speaker 4: you know what the most annoying part about that is?
- 14:45Speaker 4: As well? It's always the essential things that you're like, oh,
- 14:49Speaker 4: I need some new socks or I need something new
- 14:51Speaker 4: that I just feel bad buying, and then you end
- 14:54Speaker 4: up paying more for it because you needed to buy
- 14:56Speaker 4: it in person and you don't actually search out the
- 14:58Speaker 4: best deal. I actually feel that, whereas if it's something
- 15:01Speaker 4: that I didn't need, I'm so good at those purchases.
- 15:05Speaker 4: So good, all right. So next and final question of
- 15:09Speaker 4: this series is what grade would you give yourself if
- 15:13Speaker 4: we forced you to give yourself a money grade?
- 15:17Speaker 5: Maybe a bee. I feel like I've still got a
- 15:21Speaker 5: really long way to go. I'm still learning. I still
- 15:25Speaker 5: from time to time find I need to like pull
- 15:28Speaker 5: back or take money out of like an odd account.
- 15:32Speaker 5: I probably, yeah, maybe a bee. I feel like I've
- 15:35Speaker 5: come a really long way.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Though, so it sounds like it.
- 15:38Speaker 4: I get pressed with how far you've even come in
- 15:41Speaker 4: the last year. You've gone from having a goal of
- 15:44Speaker 4: like I'm going to have a lofty deposit to having
- 15:47Speaker 4: half of it. And as of July first, didn't you
- 15:50Speaker 4: say you're a company director? Like you're you're more than
- 15:53Speaker 4: a bat in my eyes. But we can get into
- 15:55Speaker 4: that after this short break. All right, let's get back
- 16:04Speaker 4: into the podcast Money Diarist. I feel like you've had
- 16:08Speaker 4: an incredibly interesting journey from living overseas to being with
- 16:12Speaker 4: a partner for eleven years. I don't mean to be
- 16:15Speaker 4: too pervy, but like, how did your money story change
- 16:18Speaker 4: going through a breakup after such a significant period of
- 16:22Speaker 4: time with that person.
- 16:25Speaker 5: Actually, it all came to a head. So we broke
- 16:28Speaker 5: up January first, last year.
- 16:30Speaker 4: And New Year knew meat no partner.
- 16:33Speaker 5: Yeah, And we were actually supposed to take a three
- 16:36Speaker 5: week holiday to Japan and while we were on holidays,
- 16:40Speaker 5: we'd meet with a group of my friends and go snowboarding.
- 16:43Speaker 5: So we because we've broken up, my friends are like,
- 16:46Speaker 5: there's no way you're not going on holidays, which meant
- 16:49Speaker 5: that all of a sudden, I had to find a
- 16:51Speaker 5: way I couldn't do anything with my plane ticket, so
- 16:54Speaker 5: I had to spend another thousand dollars on a plane
- 16:56Speaker 5: ticket in light of the fact that I knew that,
- 16:59Speaker 5: like my whole life is about to change. So I
- 17:02Speaker 5: sat down and because I'm not very good with computers
- 17:05Speaker 5: and I've only literally in the past couple months learned
- 17:07Speaker 5: how to add sums on a spreadsheet on Excel, I.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Literally sat down a pen and paper and started writing
- 17:13Speaker 1: down everything.
- 17:14Speaker 5: And it was the first time I had to budget
- 17:16Speaker 5: to make sure that I could afford my whole snowboarding
- 17:19Speaker 5: holiday all new accommodation, as well as continue to pay
- 17:22Speaker 5: for the old accommodation that we couldn't use new plane tickets.
- 17:26Speaker 1: And then that was it.
- 17:28Speaker 5: I started budgeting and it just from there by accident
- 17:32Speaker 5: by accident, hell or come high water. I'm going on
- 17:35Speaker 5: this Japan holiday. I'm going to have an amazing trip
- 17:38Speaker 5: with my friends, and this is going to be the
- 17:41Speaker 5: beginning of something really cool. So I did that, and
- 17:44Speaker 5: when I came back, I just continued to stick with
- 17:46Speaker 5: the budget and saving, and I lots of little things
- 17:49Speaker 5: like every week it was like, yes, I hit that number,
- 17:51Speaker 5: Yes I hit that number.
- 17:53Speaker 4: So oh I love that. And I mean it's come
- 17:57Speaker 4: from a journey where you know, no one wants to
- 18:00Speaker 4: be forced into budgeting off the back of a relationship
- 18:03Speaker 4: breaking up. But at the same time, I feel like
- 18:06Speaker 4: there's always, as I was saying at the start of
- 18:07Speaker 4: this podcast, there's usually a trigger point for these things.
- 18:10Speaker 4: There's usually something that happens that forces you down that road,
- 18:14Speaker 4: and then you find yourself on that path, thinking maybe
- 18:16Speaker 4: it's going to be sucky. You're like, oh my god,
- 18:19Speaker 4: I have to budget or I have to do this,
- 18:20Speaker 4: and you're like, I feel really empowered, I feel really
- 18:22Speaker 4: in control. What is this? What do you mean? So
- 18:25Speaker 4: how did you feel going through that, like starting the
- 18:28Speaker 4: journey of budgeting where you're like, oh, I really don't
- 18:31Speaker 4: want to have to do this, but this is the
- 18:32Speaker 4: only way it's going to work. Or were you like, yes,
- 18:34Speaker 4: I'm in control, Like what did that look like for you?
- 18:37Speaker 1: It was so empowering.
- 18:39Speaker 5: It felt like I finally knew like years earlier, my
- 18:44Speaker 5: previous partner had got me to try and do barefoot
- 18:47Speaker 5: investing style bank setup, and I remember I dug my
- 18:49Speaker 5: heels in the whole way because I just didn't feel comfortable.
- 18:53Speaker 5: And so last year I rearranged all the bank accounts
- 18:56Speaker 5: and it just actually felt really empowering.
- 18:58Speaker 1: I felt like I.
- 18:58Speaker 5: Finally knew where I I knew what I had, I
- 19:02Speaker 5: knew what I could have going forward.
- 19:04Speaker 1: So that and I did.
- 19:06Speaker 5: Was determined that when we finally sold the house that
- 19:09Speaker 5: I would have all the money I needed to move out,
- 19:11Speaker 5: pay rent, and still continue to pay my mortgage in
- 19:14Speaker 5: the crossover, pay all that stuff.
- 19:16Speaker 1: And I was not going to touch anything else. I
- 19:19Speaker 1: wasn't going to touch the house funds. And I just
- 19:22Speaker 1: felt so good going I built this. This was because
- 19:26Speaker 1: I did.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like learning a whole new part about Without
- 19:31Speaker 3: sounding cheesy, it is like finding a whole new part
- 19:34Speaker 3: of your personality as you grow up and you're like, wow,
- 19:38Speaker 3: I actually do really care about how I've grown and
- 19:40Speaker 3: how I'm changing, and it's really really cool that you
- 19:43Speaker 3: found that yourself, and you were like, oh, I didn't
- 19:45Speaker 3: want to do this because I wasn't ready, and now
- 19:48Speaker 3: I am ready and it feels awesome.
- 19:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I was not ready beforehand at all. It was
- 19:53Speaker 5: it wasn't I literally dug my heels in so hard.
- 19:57Speaker 5: But last year there was just this point I had
- 19:59Speaker 5: so many friends family to support me, and I just knew,
- 20:01Speaker 5: no matter what I did, that the only way to
- 20:04Speaker 5: move on from where I came from was to do
- 20:06Speaker 5: it myself. And so to come out the other side,
- 20:10Speaker 5: moving to my own apartment on my own, I was
- 20:12Speaker 5: just like, yeah, I did this, this was all me.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Oh, I love that so much. And money dorist, I
- 20:18Speaker 4: want to be really perfect because I love banking structures
- 20:21Speaker 4: and understanding how people do what and like I obviously
- 20:25Speaker 4: have my budget and cash flow masterclass. So I've created
- 20:27Speaker 4: a system that I think works. But how do you
- 20:31Speaker 4: manage your accounts? Like? What accounts do you have? What
- 20:33Speaker 4: do you use them for? Can you tell us?
- 20:36Speaker 5: I think I have about nine obviously my main account,
- 20:40Speaker 5: then I have my emergency fund.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I have one full luxury.
- 20:45Speaker 5: So that's if my current partner and I want to
- 20:47Speaker 5: go out for dinner or something during the week, or
- 20:49Speaker 5: if like I need that pair of sox or.
- 20:53Speaker 4: Tree is not buying essential to my friend.
- 20:57Speaker 5: No it's not, but it's I don't like pep into
- 21:00Speaker 5: other accounts, so that's.
- 21:01Speaker 4: How I get that it's often a mental barrier.
- 21:04Speaker 1: I get it.
- 21:05Speaker 5: Then I have like my hair and botox account because
- 21:09Speaker 5: that is one that I can't skip over.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Very powerful, Yeah, very important.
- 21:15Speaker 5: I have a share account, so I have money that
- 21:17Speaker 5: goes into an account to get put towards shares every week.
- 21:20Speaker 5: I have bottle money, so my partner and if we
- 21:22Speaker 5: have ended up cans or bottles, we put all the
- 21:25Speaker 5: money into that account together.
- 21:26Speaker 4: Oh, we don't have that in Victoria. I've seen that before.
- 21:30Speaker 4: I am literally envious of that because I feel like
- 21:33Speaker 4: we'd have less bottles and cans and stuff on the
- 21:35Speaker 4: street in Melbourne if that was a thing.
- 21:37Speaker 1: It's so good.
- 21:38Speaker 5: I mean, I understand the theory, you've already paid the
- 21:40Speaker 5: ten cents, you're just getting the ten cents back, but
- 21:42Speaker 5: it's literally it's like tax money. Everyone seems to think
- 21:46Speaker 5: it's free money. It's a little bit like that. You're
- 21:47Speaker 5: just rearranging the money back around.
- 21:50Speaker 3: But it makes you feel good because not only have
- 21:52Speaker 3: you done something good for the environment, but you get
- 21:55Speaker 3: you know, a couple of dollars here and there makes
- 21:56Speaker 3: a difference exactly, and.
- 21:59Speaker 1: It goes into the an account.
- 22:00Speaker 4: So I want to hear a money diarist who's done
- 22:04Speaker 4: that as like a full side hustle and see how
- 22:07Speaker 4: much money they get from it. I reckon, there's somebody
- 22:09Speaker 4: out there who's made a killing.
- 22:11Speaker 5: Yeah, well, we had it when I was a kid,
- 22:13Speaker 5: but it's gone like it left through most of my
- 22:16Speaker 5: life and it only came back in the past few years.
- 22:19Speaker 1: So, oh, don't understand why we had it. It went
- 22:21Speaker 1: away came back.
- 22:23Speaker 4: So what other bank accounts do you have? You've got
- 22:25Speaker 4: your bottles one and I went on a tangent. I
- 22:27Speaker 4: do apologize.
- 22:28Speaker 5: I've got a regio account because I've got a couple
- 22:30Speaker 5: of vehicles, so I need to make sure I have money,
- 22:33Speaker 5: and my American car, Lee Rego's really expensive, fancy.
- 22:39Speaker 4: I assumed you might have been a little bit of
- 22:41Speaker 4: a car friend based on the fact that you order
- 22:44Speaker 4: car parts from the US.
- 22:46Speaker 5: We're learning, Yeah, that was kind of part of that.
- 22:49Speaker 5: I guess you could probably also call that an investment.
- 22:52Speaker 5: I bought it and imported it with my current partner
- 22:55Speaker 5: at the end of last year.
- 22:57Speaker 1: It was partially an investment decision decision and a business decision.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I'm actually going to use it as my work vehicle.
- 23:05Speaker 4: Can tell us what type of car it is so
- 23:07Speaker 4: I can google it.
- 23:08Speaker 5: It's a nineteen sixty five Chevy C ten. It's an
- 23:12Speaker 5: American pickup truck, so very cool.
- 23:15Speaker 1: It's big and it's amazing.
- 23:18Speaker 5: And you're an.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Electrician as well. You'd look so fancy coming over to
- 23:21Speaker 4: my house to fix my life.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Honestly, well, that's it.
- 23:25Speaker 5: I remember someone once saying the best marketing you can
- 23:28Speaker 5: get is the one that you don't pay for give
- 23:30Speaker 5: people a reason to.
- 23:31Speaker 4: Talk about you.
- 23:32Speaker 5: And I've always wanted an old car, and so I thought,
- 23:35Speaker 5: you know what, what's better than a cheek electrician driving
- 23:38Speaker 5: a really cool old car.
- 23:40Speaker 4: I actually adore this, and you're like super fit. You're
- 23:43Speaker 4: going to get out of a car and people are
- 23:45Speaker 4: going to be like who is she? What does she.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Get a car? And people are just like whoa is
- 23:53Speaker 1: this yours? Yes? Yes it is mine, and they're too
- 23:57Speaker 1: busy looking at the truck to actually I'm like, okay,
- 24:00Speaker 1: what do you want done? Like what's the job? And
- 24:02Speaker 1: they're too busy wanting to talk about the chuck. I'm like, okay,
- 24:05Speaker 1: but I'm on the clock, so whatever.
- 24:06Speaker 2: You want to That's when you start charging by the hour.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Clock. Guys, I actually love when people take control of
- 24:15Speaker 4: their own budget and cash flow journey. And I guess
- 24:18Speaker 4: that's what my next question leads into. I know that
- 24:20Speaker 4: lots of people who listen to our podcast are really
- 24:23Speaker 4: wanting to get into that, and they just haven't taken
- 24:26Speaker 4: the plunge yet or it's all overwhelming, like where did
- 24:28Speaker 4: you start? Like, if we haven't done any of this yet,
- 24:32Speaker 4: how can we start to take control of our banking
- 24:34Speaker 4: structure and make it work for us like you've made
- 24:36Speaker 4: it work for you.
- 24:38Speaker 5: I had to find a way to like I needed
- 24:41Speaker 5: to see what was going out and how much and
- 24:44Speaker 5: to wear, and then for me, I needed to make
- 24:47Speaker 5: sure that I allocated all of those amounts to go
- 24:50Speaker 5: to those places. And then it meant that I could
- 24:53Speaker 5: see what was left, and then I would know if
- 24:56Speaker 5: I was either dipping into what was left or if
- 24:58Speaker 5: it was all being moved across into like my savings
- 25:01Speaker 5: that I wasn't.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Going to touch at all.
- 25:03Speaker 5: So for me, literally breaking it down into really tiny amounts,
- 25:07Speaker 5: so I had on I had paper all over my
- 25:09Speaker 5: bed at the time, and I.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Still do what worked for you works.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Oh gosh, I'm getting better, though I may have spreadsticks
- 25:18Speaker 5: for my account and this year before my tax receipts.
- 25:20Speaker 1: He was very impressed.
- 25:22Speaker 6: It is she she's a new woman a little bit,
- 25:27Speaker 6: but like just have it all written down so that
- 25:29Speaker 6: you know, like these are all of my bills that
- 25:31Speaker 6: come in quarterly, and these are this is my re jo.
- 25:34Speaker 5: That I need to pay and so to me, I
- 25:36Speaker 5: had to literally break it down every week and just
- 25:39Speaker 5: shoot all the money away so that I saw what
- 25:41Speaker 5: was left.
- 25:42Speaker 4: I think that's really important. And what was the first
- 25:45Speaker 4: thing you did. Was it sitting down and doing all
- 25:48Speaker 4: those pieces of paper that you had across your bed,
- 25:50Speaker 4: or was it checking out your bank? Like did you
- 25:53Speaker 4: change banks? Are there anything or tips and tricks that
- 25:56Speaker 4: really helped you along that journey that we should know about.
- 25:59Speaker 5: It at the time, And I even have I remember
- 26:02Speaker 5: I took an Insta story at the time because I
- 26:05Speaker 5: had my mortgage with one bank, I had my credit
- 26:08Speaker 5: card with a different bank, and I have all my
- 26:09Speaker 5: personal banking with a third bank.
- 26:11Speaker 1: And I remember taking a photo of all three.
- 26:14Speaker 5: I had three computer screens up with all three banks
- 26:16Speaker 5: open and saying I'm taking control of this. So I
- 26:20Speaker 5: literally had to sit.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Down with all the computer screens and I wrote it
- 26:24Speaker 1: all down. It was like, okay, this is what's all
- 26:26Speaker 1: on these accounts?
- 26:27Speaker 5: This is and I had to write down and look
- 26:29Speaker 5: at everything and see where everything was.
- 26:32Speaker 1: So oh I love that.
- 26:34Speaker 5: Yeah, and then I just made a plan, like this
- 26:36Speaker 5: is this is what I can reasonably say, So what's
- 26:38Speaker 5: my goal?
- 26:39Speaker 1: Can I push this a little bit?
- 26:40Speaker 5: I do overtime, So any overtime would immediately get pushed
- 26:43Speaker 5: into an account all night. When I got I got
- 26:47Speaker 5: a pay rise at the end of last year, I
- 26:50Speaker 5: actually didn't even touch it. I immediately made it so
- 26:52Speaker 5: it went into my like my savings, my future account,
- 26:56Speaker 5: and so I've never seen any of my pay rise.
- 26:58Speaker 5: It immediately goes into a savings account, and I've touched it.
- 27:01Speaker 4: She's not got any type of lifestyle creep, Tony. We
- 27:04Speaker 4: love what you going to be.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Yeah, how have we let you grade yourself only a B?
- 27:09Speaker 3: This is It sounds like you've gone on such an
- 27:11Speaker 3: amazing journey and how.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Cool that we're a part of it.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you.
- 27:16Speaker 5: I started listening to you guys last year and was like,
- 27:18Speaker 5: oh my god, how have I not.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Been listening to this stuff before? Look how much I'm learning.
- 27:23Speaker 4: I love that, and I love that people like you're
- 27:26Speaker 4: in our community and doing good things and getting on
- 27:29Speaker 4: the right paths. And it's just I love being able
- 27:32Speaker 4: to ask you questions about like, Okay, how did you
- 27:34Speaker 4: start budgeting? Because it is different for everybody, Like there's
- 27:37Speaker 4: no right, there's no wrong. It's what's going to work
- 27:40Speaker 4: for you. And if it's pieces of paper across your
- 27:42Speaker 4: bed that works for you, like I am so here
- 27:46Speaker 4: for it. You don't have to be a spreadsheet wizard.
- 27:49Speaker 4: Some people break up their money into envelopes and literally
- 27:52Speaker 4: run an envelope system. Some people do what you're doing
- 27:54Speaker 4: and have different bank accounts. Other people you know, outsourcing
- 27:57Speaker 4: and get their partner to take their debit card off them. Like,
- 28:00Speaker 4: there are different ways that you.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Can do this.
- 28:02Speaker 4: You just need to find the right thing for you.
- 28:04Speaker 4: And I think it's just so special that our community
- 28:07Speaker 4: trusts us enough to share those things with us so
- 28:10Speaker 4: that we can learn from you. Like how cool. I
- 28:13Speaker 4: love that. I don't know what heart you drive, So
- 28:15Speaker 4: if you see that car driving around, just assume there
- 28:18Speaker 4: are she's on the money person and give them away.
- 28:21Speaker 1: The amount of times that I've since listening to you, guys.
- 28:24Speaker 5: I've gone back to friends, like friends that were there
- 28:26Speaker 5: to support me and teach me to adult last year,
- 28:28Speaker 5: and I had to that.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I've gone back and I heard on this podcast. They're like,
- 28:31Speaker 1: oh my god, what is she listening to? I know
- 28:35Speaker 1: about finance. All of a sudden, she's better than this
- 28:37Speaker 1: than we are.
- 28:40Speaker 4: It's like, cut to that TikTok sound? Am I better
- 28:43Speaker 4: than everybody else?
- 28:46Speaker 2: And now you're on the podcast sharing your own tips?
- 28:49Speaker 1: Hackle.
- 28:49Speaker 4: No, I'm so lucky that you want to share this
- 28:53Speaker 4: journey with our community, and honestly, you have been a
- 28:56Speaker 4: dream to have a chat with. I feel like I
- 28:59Speaker 4: am on our Hi high at the end of this.
- 29:01Speaker 4: So thank you so so much for joining us Money Diarist.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Oh, thank you, thank you for letting me share.
- 29:07Speaker 4: But as always, that is all we have time for today.
- 29:11Speaker 4: So just before we head off, we'd like to acknowledge

- 29:33Speaker 3: The advice shared on She's on the Money is generally
