- 1:17Speaker 2: of our Money Diaries episodes where I get the absolute
- 1:20Speaker 2: pleasure of sitting down and having a chat with one
- 1:22Speaker 2: of our incredible She's on the Money community members all
- 1:25Speaker 2: about their journey. Now let's jump straight into it, because
- 1:28Speaker 2: this week I got a message and it sounded like this, Dear,
- 1:31Speaker 2: she's on the money. I became a mum at eighteen.
- 1:34Speaker 2: I finished Year twelve, and then four weeks later I
- 1:37Speaker 2: had my baby. Then I went onto university. While working
- 1:41Speaker 2: and raising my girl, money was tight and every dollarcounted
- 1:45Speaker 2: living on sentling. Over the years, I've worked hard to
- 1:47Speaker 2: build a career, buy a home, and create stability for
- 1:50Speaker 2: my family. I'm now focused on growing wealth through budgeting,
- 1:54Speaker 2: hopefully soon investing, and long term planning. My money journey
- 1:58Speaker 2: is about resilience, learning and creating the future. I only
- 2:01Speaker 2: once dreamed of money. Doris, this is very cool.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Sorry having a baby at eighteen while I'm assuming you
- 2:11Speaker 2: felt pregnant in grade twelve.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I was a start of year twelve, so
- 2:14Speaker 5: I think I found out on April Fool's Day. Oh
- 2:17Speaker 5: what a joke, it's the worst April Fools. I did
- 2:20Speaker 5: eight pregnancy tests and yeah, I was pregnant. It was
- 2:25Speaker 5: a real thing.
- 2:26Speaker 2: No, hold on, let's backtrack a little bit. I want
- 2:29Speaker 2: to know before we dive further in, because I've just
- 2:32Speaker 2: got so many questions. What grade would you give your
- 2:34Speaker 2: money habits from A three to F.
- 2:36Speaker 5: I think I'm really on the fence between like a
- 2:39Speaker 5: C plus or a B minus. Yeah, I'm sort of
- 2:43Speaker 5: like doing okay, but I guess there's always room for
- 2:45Speaker 5: growth in I'm only a new community member. I sort
- 2:48Speaker 5: of joined the shoes on the many communities. I listened
- 2:50Speaker 5: to podcasts in January this year.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Sorry, welcome to the fan.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Yeah, so I'm a newb so yeah, still just sort
- 2:57Speaker 5: of getting on track. But I do think looking back
- 2:59Speaker 5: in sort of for your books listening to the podcast today,
- 3:01Speaker 5: I have definitely had some really good habits that have
- 3:03Speaker 5: helped me get to where I am now.
- 3:05Speaker 4: And now it's around kind of refining.
- 3:06Speaker 2: And girl, you've had amazing habits. The fact that you
- 3:10Speaker 2: finished your twelve pregnant and did all of that like
- 3:14Speaker 2: be so for real, Like I know that the option
- 3:18Speaker 2: of dropping out might have seemed really appealing at the time.
- 3:21Speaker 2: And like one of my friends from way back when
- 3:24Speaker 2: I was in grade twelve, she actually fell pregnant, I
- 3:26Speaker 2: would say, about the same time as you did. In
- 3:28Speaker 2: grade twelve. She actually went into labor in our English exam,
- 3:32Speaker 2: and she finished, and she is now the most incredible
- 3:36Speaker 2: teacher and like does like runs rings around things. She
- 3:39Speaker 2: now has like three kids. She's an icon. But I
- 3:42Speaker 2: just think these stories are so beautiful because that sounds
- 3:46Speaker 2: like a really rough start to getting your money story started.
- 3:50Speaker 2: You didn't have time to set yourself up financially, like
- 3:52Speaker 2: there clearly wasn't a lot of planning involved in this
- 3:54Speaker 2: type of stuff. But you've come out on top, like
- 3:57Speaker 2: and you're probably in a better money situation then so
- 4:00Speaker 2: many people, and like that's just inspirational. So I cannot
- 4:03Speaker 2: wait to tear more.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 4:05Speaker 2: You did eight pregnancy tests and then what had to
- 4:08Speaker 2: melt down?
- 4:10Speaker 5: It was just like shock, I think my partner, who's
- 4:13Speaker 5: now my husband.
- 4:15Speaker 2: But you're still together.
- 4:16Speaker 4: We're still together.
- 4:17Speaker 2: That's so cute. I love love.
- 4:19Speaker 4: We're still together.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Yes, so thirteen years married this year we ended up
- 4:24Speaker 5: getting pregnant. A bit of a shotgun wedding just because
- 4:27Speaker 5: I think it was such a hectic here and looking back,
- 4:30Speaker 5: probably wouldn't do that again. But we got married and
- 4:32Speaker 5: we were like, let's just do this, like we're a
- 4:34Speaker 5: bit crazy, we're in survival mode.
- 4:36Speaker 4: But yeah, I was just pronounced very shocked. I think
- 4:38Speaker 4: I just walked in the.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Room and he was still asleep, and I just stared
- 4:40Speaker 5: at him, and then he woke up and he's like, oh, yeah,
- 4:43Speaker 5: you're pregnant.
- 4:44Speaker 4: I was like, yeah, yeah, I am.
- 4:47Speaker 6: No.
- 4:48Speaker 5: Yes, it was a bit shocking, and it did change
- 4:51Speaker 5: the course of my life forever, you know, going back
- 4:53Speaker 5: before I got pregnant, I was always some one who
- 4:56Speaker 5: worked really hard. I had two jobs in high school.
- 4:59Speaker 5: I'd go from working one sort of hostpow job to
- 5:02Speaker 5: another ostcrow job, but you know, day and night on
- 5:04Speaker 5: the weekends, and always had a really big, you know,
- 5:07Speaker 5: work ethic, and it was really important to me to
- 5:09Speaker 5: work and have money and savings and stability. So then
- 5:12Speaker 5: to suddenly have your whole world flipped upside down did
- 5:16Speaker 5: change things for me. And it did, unfortunately lead to
- 5:19Speaker 5: me not getting any more shifts you know in my
- 5:21Speaker 5: job that was working a very big fast food company
- 5:25Speaker 5: at the time, and yeah, it sort of changed.
- 5:27Speaker 4: It meant that, Yeah, I had to apply for center
- 5:29Speaker 4: Link and had to move schools.
- 5:31Speaker 5: My school kicked me out and had to go and
- 5:34Speaker 5: stop her. Yeah, joined the local tafe to be able
- 5:36Speaker 5: to finish year twelve, So it did shift a lot
- 5:38Speaker 5: of things for me.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Why did your school kick you out? Were they like
- 5:41Speaker 2: a Catholic school?
- 5:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I was at a religious school, and yeah, the
- 5:45Speaker 5: principal called me up and said it wasn't sort of
- 5:47Speaker 5: a good role model for the younger students because I
- 5:49Speaker 5: was pregnant, which yeah, is bizarre in itself, because you know,
- 5:53Speaker 5: if we think about what maybe religious schools teach, you know,
- 5:56Speaker 5: around loving people and oh.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no, no, it is it's crazy. I also
- 6:01Speaker 2: went to a Catholic high school and my friend was
- 6:05Speaker 2: asked because she didn't get kicked out, which is really good.
- 6:07Speaker 2: And I don't know a lot about the semantics of
- 6:09Speaker 2: that conversation, but I do remember talking to her because
- 6:11Speaker 2: she was asked not to wear the uniform anymore and
- 6:14Speaker 2: that she could come to school, but she had to
- 6:16Speaker 2: be in playing clothes. And like, looking back on that,
- 6:19Speaker 2: it's like she's already having a rough time, like to
- 6:22Speaker 2: then be ostracized and like pointed out even more, Like
- 6:25Speaker 2: what do you like? Sometimes you just look at things
- 6:28Speaker 2: that happened during school and you go, why the hell
- 6:31Speaker 2: did anybody think that that was appropriate? Like would not
- 6:34Speaker 2: the best thing to have been done? Was keep you
- 6:37Speaker 2: in that environment and support you through that and show
- 6:40Speaker 2: everybody that no like, mistakes happen and we are kind. Yeah,
- 6:45Speaker 2: absolutely horrific. I'm so sorry you went through that.
- 6:49Speaker 5: It doesn't make any sense. It's already a hard time.
- 6:51Speaker 5: You're already feeling self conscious, so let's make people more
- 6:53Speaker 5: self conscious.
- 6:54Speaker 2: It doesn't really thousand percent. So you finish your twelve
- 6:58Speaker 2: through tafe an icon, I love this for you. What
- 7:02Speaker 2: was it like giving birth four weeks after finishing year twelve?
- 7:06Speaker 5: It was crazy, Like I think I just set myself
- 7:09Speaker 5: a deadline, had to get three year twelve. So I
- 7:11Speaker 5: did that and then sort of had four weeks to
- 7:14Speaker 5: you never chilling. You're exhausted and you end up having
- 7:17Speaker 5: more appointments and things like that, and you're running around.
- 7:19Speaker 5: So I had my license there. I turned eighteen, sort
- 7:22Speaker 5: of halfway through my pregnancy, so that was nice to
- 7:24Speaker 5: have a bit of freedom.
- 7:26Speaker 4: And yeah, I just kind of was I think, to.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Be honest, I haven't really processed a lot of what
- 7:31Speaker 5: I've gone through until sort of this stage in life.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Like it just sort of knuckled down and had to
- 7:36Speaker 4: get on that. It had to go into mom mode.
- 7:38Speaker 5: Figure it out and my goal was always to make
- 7:41Speaker 5: sure that, you know, my daughter had a stable life
- 7:44Speaker 5: and the best life, she called it. And it didn't
- 7:45Speaker 5: feel like she came from a mum who was a teenager,
- 7:48Speaker 5: because you know, obviously stereotypeople that, you know, can look
- 7:51Speaker 5: perhaps a little bit.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Different to what I wanted to look like. So yeah, then.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Had her and a whole world changed, and as it
- 7:59Speaker 5: does when anyone become a mom. And yeah, it was
- 8:01Speaker 5: obviously you know, the ups and downs and the challenges
- 8:03Speaker 5: and that sort of thing. And maybe, yeah, when she
- 8:06Speaker 5: was about six months old, I decided that I was
- 8:09Speaker 5: going to go to UNI.
- 8:10Speaker 4: So I ended up doing a media intake for UNIE and.
- 8:14Speaker 2: You're in icon. You are in absolute icon. So you
- 8:17Speaker 2: went to UNI? What did you study?
- 8:19Speaker 5: I did a Bachelor of Criminal Justice? Okay, icon, very
- 8:23Speaker 5: niche you know just what I was into at the time,
- 8:27Speaker 5: and you know I still am. But yeah, so when
- 8:29Speaker 5: on and did that and I ended up doing that.
- 8:30Speaker 5: I was a three year degree and I actually got
- 8:32Speaker 5: to do it in two and.
- 8:33Speaker 2: A half years to stop it, of course you did.
- 8:36Speaker 5: And in the middle of that, I also had my
- 8:38Speaker 5: second son two years later as.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Well, so we adore. So what were you when you
- 8:42Speaker 2: had your second son?
- 8:42Speaker 4: Twenty Yeah?
- 8:44Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, So do you have any more kids now
- 8:46Speaker 2: or is it just a two?
- 8:48Speaker 5: No?
- 8:49Speaker 2: Two and done too and done. That is so fair
- 8:52Speaker 2: but also kind of incredible that you got them done
- 8:56Speaker 2: so early, because like, I had my first baby when
- 8:59Speaker 2: I was thirty two, and don't get me wrong, I
- 9:01Speaker 2: don't think anyone ever feels ready, Like even at thirty two,
- 9:05Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, cool, Like I've got the finances sorted,
- 9:07Speaker 2: I've got this, I've got that, and I'm in labor
- 9:09Speaker 2: and I'm like, this is cooked. Why did we do this?
- 9:11Speaker 2: Like I'm so scared, Like I can't imagine what that
- 9:14Speaker 2: would have been like at eighteen. But now you're probably
- 9:16Speaker 2: laughing at me because last night I was up between
- 9:19Speaker 2: two and four because my baby wouldn't stop crying, and
- 9:22Speaker 2: you were probably sleeping soundly because you get to live
- 9:25Speaker 2: your life having already done the nappies.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Definitely, definitely.
- 9:29Speaker 5: I think you know, we all struggle, you know, with
- 9:32Speaker 5: parenting and motherhood, and you know the challenges. Have been
- 9:35Speaker 5: awake in the middle of the night and feeling a
- 9:37Speaker 5: bit lonely and isolated, and I guess I'm learning now
- 9:40Speaker 5: that you know, that is normal for us all to
- 9:41Speaker 5: go through that at different stages. And I've had to
- 9:44Speaker 5: process a lot of grief around you know, how my
- 9:46Speaker 5: life went because back then, all my friends, you know,
- 9:49Speaker 5: we're off going clubbing and going out and going on
- 9:51Speaker 5: holidays and you know, had sort of a lot of
- 9:54Speaker 5: freedom that I didn't have back then, and you know,
- 9:57Speaker 5: now perhaps to have a little bit more freedom, but
- 9:59Speaker 5: you know it similar to you a lot of my
- 10:01Speaker 5: friends and outside and to slow down and have babies,
- 10:03Speaker 5: and you know, our routines still clash to this day.
- 10:05Speaker 5: So yeah, it's a very different stage of life for
- 10:08Speaker 5: me now, but I definitely don't forget the challenges of
- 10:12Speaker 5: motherhood and yeah, all those late nights.
- 10:14Speaker 2: No, but it sounds like you took to it like
- 10:17Speaker 2: a duck to water, which is so nice to hear,
- 10:19Speaker 2: Like you just want to know that if that's the journey,
- 10:22Speaker 2: like you can just get it done. Do you feel
- 10:24Speaker 2: like you missed out? Like is that part of you know,
- 10:27Speaker 2: you said you're going through some grief and like trying
- 10:30Speaker 2: to work through that. Is that because you're like I
- 10:32Speaker 2: really missed out on part of my youth or like,
- 10:34Speaker 2: what does that part look like?
- 10:36Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it definitely feels like I missed out
- 10:39Speaker 5: on a lot. And I guess that's sort of, you know,
- 10:43Speaker 5: part of my money story as well, is, you know,
- 10:45Speaker 5: often I got into sort of some bad habits of
- 10:48Speaker 5: really comparing myself to other people, and you know, people
- 10:50Speaker 5: would have money to go to trouble or to just
- 10:52Speaker 5: go out for dinner or a coffee, and you know,
- 10:55Speaker 5: I guess one of my experiences, you know, I had
- 10:57Speaker 5: a really good mother's group. I'm so lucky I ended
- 10:59Speaker 5: up an adult mother's group because the young ones just
- 11:02Speaker 5: weren't my fit. But I had a really good mother's group,
- 11:05Speaker 5: but I was struggling so much financially that you know,
- 11:08Speaker 5: sometimes they'd be like, let's just meet at a cafe,
- 11:09Speaker 5: and I didn't even have five dollars or four dollars
- 11:12Speaker 5: back then for a coffee, and so I just wouldn't go.
- 11:15Speaker 5: And so, yeah, it was really hard because I was
- 11:18Speaker 5: always comparing myself to other moms at that time, but
- 11:22Speaker 5: also compared to myself to my peers who were all
- 11:24Speaker 5: you knowbviously eighteen nineteen twenty live in their best lives
- 11:27Speaker 5: as you should be.
- 11:28Speaker 2: At that age, Yeah, but the comparison is not comparable,
- 11:31Speaker 2: and like at the time, you don't know that. Like,
- 11:33Speaker 2: but going to mother's group with the adult group, I'm
- 11:35Speaker 2: sure that you know personality wise, you might have gone
- 11:37Speaker 2: on a lot more, but just the differences in circumstances
- 11:42Speaker 2: would have meant that you would have felt really less
- 11:44Speaker 2: than you would have felt like, oh, I don't fit
- 11:46Speaker 2: in here. And I can always guarantee, like if they
- 11:48Speaker 2: knew your situation, they would have been like, money, dress,
- 11:51Speaker 2: We've got your coffee, come along, it doesn't matter. But
- 11:54Speaker 2: like you're not going to put your hand up and
- 11:55Speaker 2: say that like that, that's not how we're feeling in
- 11:58Speaker 2: that moment or time. So it's just it's really upsetting.
- 12:02Speaker 2: And then your friends going out, you'd be like, well,
- 12:04Speaker 2: I can't resonate with anybody, I'm all on my own.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Was it very isolating during that time, Yeah, it was.
- 12:10Speaker 4: It was very.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Isolating, and I think you then sort of start saying
- 12:13Speaker 5: no to people for genuine reason, and then the invites
- 12:16Speaker 5: sort of dry up and you're still sort of hearing
- 12:19Speaker 5: from people. And you know, at the time, I think
- 12:21Speaker 5: I became quite upset towards that, But you know, as
- 12:24Speaker 5: I get older, you understand that, like you know, people,
- 12:27Speaker 5: you know, they sort of you know, put in the
- 12:30Speaker 5: effort and then when they feel like it's not being reciprocated,
- 12:32Speaker 5: and they sometimes, specially at the age of twenty, you
- 12:35Speaker 5: often don't have that empathy of an understanding of like
- 12:37Speaker 5: what it would be like to be in a different situation.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Yeah, one hundred perve.
- 12:40Speaker 4: So I can really see that differently now.
- 12:41Speaker 5: But yeah, at the time was really isolating and yeah,
- 12:44Speaker 5: just really really challenging.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Just stood doing it on my own.
- 12:46Speaker 5: But I guess for me, I just made the choice
- 12:49Speaker 5: that I was just going to knuckle down, focus on UNI,
- 12:51Speaker 5: focus on spending time, you know with my daughter, and
- 12:54Speaker 5: then yeah, my son who came along as well.
- 12:57Speaker 4: And yeah, just put a lot of energy into that.
- 13:00Speaker 5: So yeah, really to set ourselves up, our sort of
- 13:02Speaker 5: goal was, you know, to buy a house, as I
- 13:05Speaker 5: think most people's goals are, you know, in that nuclear
- 13:07Speaker 5: family kind of vibe. But yeah, so that was sort
- 13:10Speaker 5: of our long term goal or if you need work hard,
- 13:12Speaker 5: hopefully get a house and have some sort of stability.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Yeah, and like I look at it and I just
- 13:16Speaker 2: go brilliant, like how good you've kind of like set
- 13:18Speaker 2: yourselves up in this way, and you've just got so
- 13:21Speaker 2: much time, Like you're only thirty. Like the amount of
- 13:24Speaker 2: people that haven't even done anything near what you've done
- 13:28Speaker 2: at the age of thirty, it's not a comparison, but
- 13:31Speaker 2: it's just like you probably don't know how well you're doing.
- 13:34Speaker 2: And I want to like hug you and shake you
- 13:36Speaker 2: at the same time and be like money doars, like
- 13:38Speaker 2: this is actually like the prime time, Like your kids
- 13:41Speaker 2: are probably a little bit more independent. I'm assuming they're
- 13:43Speaker 2: ten and twelve, is that right.
- 13:45Speaker 5: Yeah, ten and twelve and almost thirteen, almost eleven, it's
- 13:48Speaker 5: yeah birthdays, November birthdays.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Yeah, or you're about to go through it again. But
- 13:54Speaker 2: I feel like that's the time where now you can
- 13:57Speaker 2: focus on your budgeting and you're building wealth, and there's
- 13:59Speaker 2: no day care fees and there's probably a bit more
- 14:01Speaker 2: flexibility with school and pickups and drop offs, Like this
- 14:05Speaker 2: is the prime I'm just so excited for you and
- 14:08Speaker 2: the fact that you already own a home, Like stop
- 14:11Speaker 2: it tell me a little bit more about what life
- 14:13Speaker 2: looks like today, because we've talked about like the journey,
- 14:15Speaker 2: but like what's today you've built your career and you've
- 14:19Speaker 2: got a home and you're creating stability. What do you
- 14:22Speaker 2: and your partner do for work? And how much money
- 14:23Speaker 2: do you win? Yeah?
- 14:24Speaker 5: So I work for state government, So I went into
- 14:28Speaker 5: sort of yeah, justice related work and currently working as
- 14:31Speaker 5: a project officer.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Yeah, for state government. I earn around one hundred, one
- 14:35Speaker 4: hundred and eleven thousand a year plus super. Yeah.
- 14:39Speaker 2: And because you're working for state government, what's your super rate?
- 14:42Speaker 5: I think it's just the standard. It's not the same
- 14:45Speaker 5: as federal government, which is a bummer, but.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I was like, how does that work? Because
- 14:49Speaker 2: every state and territory is different.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Yeah, so I think what is Victoria on twelfth?
- 14:54Speaker 2: Yeah? Twelve percent? Yeah? How good? And what does your
- 14:57Speaker 2: partner do?
- 14:58Speaker 5: He is a project manager in like the construction space
- 15:02Speaker 5: and he earns I think around one hundred and eighty
- 15:05Speaker 5: five including super stop it.
- 15:07Speaker 2: You guys are so set up for success, Like it
- 15:10Speaker 2: might not feel like it at the moment because you've
- 15:12Speaker 2: just been like, you know, treading water, but like with
- 15:16Speaker 2: a good budget and cash flow plan and starting to
- 15:18Speaker 2: learn about investing, like, oh, I could like pick you
- 15:21Speaker 2: up and make you really rich. I'm so excited about
- 15:23Speaker 2: your situation. Tell me a little bit more, like you've
- 15:27Speaker 2: bought the house, and I'll get to that in a
- 15:29Speaker 2: hot minute. Like you've built a clearly incredible career. What
- 15:33Speaker 2: are your next big money goals? Like what are you
- 15:35Speaker 2: two currently working towards.
- 15:37Speaker 4: I think that's where the limbo has kind of come
- 15:39Speaker 4: for the last few years.
- 15:40Speaker 5: And I guess I'm a little bit shy to say,
- 15:42Speaker 5: like we've been in our house for almost six years now,
- 15:45Speaker 5: and I feel like we've probably just been a bit
- 15:47Speaker 5: stagnant for the last six years. Like we had this
- 15:50Speaker 5: huge goal and I guess we had really big plans
- 15:52Speaker 5: to you know, we got.
- 15:53Speaker 4: Pregnant, had babies, had to go to UNI.
- 15:56Speaker 5: Want to tuy a house like that was just our
- 15:58Speaker 5: like sort of goal, and then we kind of got here,
- 16:01Speaker 5: and I think we've just kind of been like, oh,
- 16:03Speaker 5: now what, and probably like the last few years have
- 16:06Speaker 5: just been so now I'm dealing with I guess the
- 16:09Speaker 5: emotional side of how challenging like our twenties and you know,
- 16:12Speaker 5: life has been for us up until now, and so
- 16:14Speaker 5: of doing some work on that.
- 16:16Speaker 4: But then I think at the start of this year
- 16:17Speaker 4: we were.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Both like we feel a bit directionless, like what's going on?
- 16:21Speaker 5: And i'd actually seen your book a few times, like
- 16:23Speaker 5: I've done a few holidays, see that at the airport
- 16:25Speaker 5: and I was like, oh, I should read that one day.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Never did like the clouds that I am, and then
- 16:29Speaker 4: found the podcast.
- 16:30Speaker 2: But also like I'm not going to lie. I'm so sorry,
- 16:33Speaker 2: like I haven't always been good at money and like, yeah,
- 16:36Speaker 2: the cover's pretty and I tried really hard, but like
- 16:38Speaker 2: that doesn't mean I even would have picked up a
- 16:40Speaker 2: money book. I feel like you pick up my book
- 16:42Speaker 2: when you're like, Okay, it's not like a oh, that
- 16:45Speaker 2: looks like a fantastic read. I think it's like I
- 16:48Speaker 2: probably need to get my shit together, all right, I'll
- 16:50Speaker 2: pick up this book like I get it. I'm not
- 16:52Speaker 2: expecting you to be like, oh my god, I just
- 16:54Speaker 2: saw this great book, Ademis. Like that's not how it works.
- 16:57Speaker 2: I feel like we finally get to a point where
- 16:59Speaker 2: we're like, maybe I need to learn a little bit
- 17:01Speaker 2: more about money, and then I'm like, hi, it's me.
- 17:03Speaker 2: I've been waiting, yeah.
- 17:06Speaker 4: And I think that's yeah, that's totally it.
- 17:09Speaker 5: I think they've been sort of like desires to probably
- 17:11Speaker 5: want to work on like the next stage, because I think, yeah,
- 17:14Speaker 5: feeling a bit directionless, Like I do really well with goals.
- 17:17Speaker 4: I do really well with a clear sort.
- 17:19Speaker 5: Of plan, and then if I don't have a plan
- 17:21Speaker 5: or goals, I'm just like, yeah, I'll spend as much
- 17:23Speaker 5: money on whatever I want, or sure, let's book these
- 17:25Speaker 5: holidays and who cares, you know about savings and that
- 17:28Speaker 5: sort of thing. So yeah, I guess sort of January
- 17:31Speaker 5: this year was sort of like a daughter started high
- 17:33Speaker 5: school and it was like, wow, we like we got
- 17:36Speaker 5: to where we wanted to be. But also I think
- 17:39Speaker 5: I had an idea that things would just sort of
- 17:42Speaker 5: fall into place a bit more.
- 17:44Speaker 4: You know, my parents were really good with money growing up.
- 17:46Speaker 5: I didn't come from a family that struggled or anything.
- 17:49Speaker 4: My husband definitely did.
- 17:50Speaker 5: And I think our money stories have definitely clashed in
- 17:53Speaker 5: some ways at times. Yeah, it's been challenging sometimes just
- 17:56Speaker 5: to sort of be on the same page around money.
- 17:58Speaker 5: And so I think this year has been like, let's
- 18:01Speaker 5: get on the same page. I have ADHD and so
- 18:04Speaker 5: I get Halper fixated. So like this is my harp
- 18:06Speaker 5: A fixation of the year is She's on the Money podcast,
- 18:10Speaker 5: reading all your books, doing the audio books, Like, yeah,
- 18:13Speaker 5: I'm crazy.
- 18:14Speaker 2: No you're not, because like my hyperfixation was creating she's
- 18:16Speaker 2: on the money. So Hi.
- 18:19Speaker 5: At one point I was like, oh, I should just
- 18:20Speaker 5: retrain and like get into finance, but like, you know,
- 18:23Speaker 5: we need to settle down.
- 18:24Speaker 4: So yeah, at the moment, it's just kind of trying
- 18:26Speaker 4: to I guess, sort of figure.
- 18:28Speaker 5: Out where to from here. And probably this year it's
- 18:31Speaker 5: been like maybe looking at investing. I have not started yet,
- 18:34Speaker 5: but that's probably my next goal or our next goal
- 18:38Speaker 5: is to start to sort of yet I guess create
- 18:39Speaker 5: that sort of longer term Well then you know, see
- 18:42Speaker 5: where we can put our money that it's actually going
- 18:44Speaker 5: to be doing something instead of just sitting you know,
- 18:47Speaker 5: in a bank account or just spending it just because
- 18:49Speaker 5: it's there.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and that totally feels like where a lot of
- 18:53Speaker 2: our community are sitting. And I love your thought pattern.
- 18:56Speaker 2: You're like, oh my gosh, yeah, like let's hopefully soon
- 18:59Speaker 2: invest make those plans. But like what I would encourage
- 19:02Speaker 2: you to do is really zoom out and go okay, cool,
- 19:05Speaker 2: Like I'm assuming your partner is probably the same age
- 19:07Speaker 2: as you. We're thirty, what are we doing and what
- 19:11Speaker 2: do we want life to feel like? So like instead
- 19:13Speaker 2: of talking about like the strategies that can come later,
- 19:16Speaker 2: I can teach you the strategies, like I know all
- 19:18Speaker 2: of those, but I can't tell you what you want.
- 19:20Speaker 2: So you need to sit down and go okay, cool,
- 19:22Speaker 2: Like we're going to have kids. Let's like do a
- 19:25Speaker 2: timeline of like, well, when are the kids going to
- 19:27Speaker 2: be both over the age of eighteen? What kind of
- 19:29Speaker 2: lifestyle do we want to have at that point? Like,
- 19:32Speaker 2: you know, are we planning on working in these full
- 19:35Speaker 2: time jobs forever? Like I want you to question everything,
- 19:37Speaker 2: like does your husband still want to be in project management?
- 19:40Speaker 2: Like is he loving it?
- 19:41Speaker 6: Is he not?
- 19:41Speaker 2: Like Let's have these deep conversations that do make you
- 19:44Speaker 2: question what's going on in life, Like do you like
- 19:47Speaker 2: working for state government? You might be like, yes, Queen,
- 19:49Speaker 2: I love it. Okay, great, tick off, Next talk about
- 19:51Speaker 2: something else. But what does even retirement look like? Because
- 19:56Speaker 2: you've just spent so long basically on the treadmill of life. Kids, kids, kids,
- 20:02Speaker 2: that's all you've been thinking about. But the next twenty
- 20:05Speaker 2: years you can create significant wealth, But the world is
- 20:08Speaker 2: going to look really different. You're not going to have
- 20:10Speaker 2: those commitments of getting kids to and from sport, getting
- 20:14Speaker 2: kids to and from school, all of that, Like, what
- 20:16Speaker 2: are we doing with our free time? What do we
- 20:18Speaker 2: want that to look like? And I find that with
- 20:21Speaker 2: clients that I've had historically that have had kids really young,
- 20:25Speaker 2: they can sometimes once they get their kids to the
- 20:27Speaker 2: age of eighteen, they're like, oh my god, I've just
- 20:29Speaker 2: gotten off the treadmill of like getting them through life successfully.
- 20:33Speaker 2: What do we do now? We're kind of bored, like
- 20:36Speaker 2: cold on, Like my entire life was my kids, and
- 20:40Speaker 2: now what I'm just hanging out at home with my
- 20:43Speaker 2: husband while my kids are out at the clubs like
- 20:45Speaker 2: and I think that that's where we need to be
- 20:47Speaker 2: thinking about, Well, what does life look like?
- 20:50Speaker 1: Like?
- 20:50Speaker 2: What does travel look like? I know you said before
- 20:52Speaker 2: we booked some holidays, and I love that, Okay, but
- 20:54Speaker 2: like what other places do we want to go? And
- 20:56Speaker 2: at what kind of age range? You're like, all right,
- 20:58Speaker 2: so we want to do Europe, But maybe we want
- 21:00Speaker 2: to do Europe when the kids are a bit older
- 21:02Speaker 2: and appreciate it more. Or maybe we don't want to
- 21:04Speaker 2: do Europe at all, Maybe we want to just go
- 21:06Speaker 2: to beach holidays or do you know what I mean, Like,
- 21:08Speaker 2: let's zoom out and go what would life look like
- 21:11Speaker 2: for us to be at our happiest Because I look
- 21:14Speaker 2: at your income and I'm like, great, You've got like
- 21:15Speaker 2: about three hundred thousand dollars between the two of you.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Life balance is going to look good. But also wealth
- 21:22Speaker 2: creation is coming, like you have so long and I'm
- 21:25Speaker 2: so excited about it for you. But like I think
- 21:27Speaker 2: that right now you might be drilling down into the
- 21:30Speaker 2: how to create that life without knowing what the life
- 21:32Speaker 2: is looking like.
- 21:33Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, And I think that's definitely probably one thing
- 21:36Speaker 5: that I've always done is I kind of just grow
- 21:38Speaker 5: straight too.
- 21:39Speaker 2: I do it too. I just jumped straight ahead, and
- 21:40Speaker 2: I'm like, right, well, investing is the answer. But like
- 21:43Speaker 2: for a long time I was investing without a real
- 21:45Speaker 2: clean strategy of like where I wanted that to go.
- 21:49Speaker 2: I knew I wanted more money because money buys freedom
- 21:51Speaker 2: and freedom is good and that feels great. But like
- 21:54Speaker 2: now my husband and I'm like, okay, cool. So these
- 21:56Speaker 2: are some like you know, micro goals of travel, like
- 21:59Speaker 2: over the next years. And here's some like you know,
- 22:01Speaker 2: family goals and things that we want to do, because
- 22:03Speaker 2: like we're still in family building mode and like talking
- 22:06Speaker 2: about babies and all of that, but then what does
- 22:09Speaker 2: do you want to upgrade cars? At some point? Like
- 22:11Speaker 2: are we going to put those as goals or are
- 22:13Speaker 2: you're like, oh, we couldn't give two rats Victoria that
- 22:16Speaker 2: that doesn't matter. So I think going into this in
- 22:19Speaker 2: financial planning, the process is kind of like if you
- 22:23Speaker 2: came to see an advisor, you would do a fact
- 22:25Speaker 2: find process, so I'd collect all of your boring data,
- 22:28Speaker 2: name age, whatever your incomes. Then you do discovery. So
- 22:32Speaker 2: we're not jumping into solutions. Were just like, what do
- 22:34Speaker 2: you want? How do you want it? How do we
- 22:36Speaker 2: create this life? Because the life you want could be
- 22:40Speaker 2: yachting around Italy on a yacht for all of the
- 22:44Speaker 2: rest of your retirement, or you could be like, yeah,
- 22:46Speaker 2: I just want to stay home and hopefully my kids
- 22:48Speaker 2: one day have grandkids and that's the life I want
- 22:50Speaker 2: to live. We can create both of those, but they
- 22:53Speaker 2: require different strategies of building wealth, and so I think
- 22:56Speaker 2: we need to go back to the base. And when
- 22:58Speaker 2: you said I have ADHD and I was like, great,
- 23:00Speaker 2: you're a queen who likes to jump ahead.
- 23:02Speaker 5: Same, Yeah, slowing down is like, yeah, definitely a skill.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I need to work on exactly. And you can be
- 23:07Speaker 2: a little bit aspirational, like organize a date with your
- 23:10Speaker 2: husband and be like, what do you want to do
- 23:11Speaker 2: when we're like sixty, because like, I don't know about you,
- 23:14Speaker 2: but like I adore my husband and I hope that
- 23:17Speaker 2: that feeling is still there when I'm sixty. How do
- 23:19Speaker 2: I maintain that? Like what do we need to do
- 23:21Speaker 2: in our relationship to make sure that we are still
- 23:24Speaker 2: as in love at that point because it is going
- 23:26Speaker 2: to take work, it doesn't just happen.
- 23:28Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, absolutely, So yeah, I.
- 23:31Speaker 5: Think for us still figuring that long term stuff out,
- 23:34Speaker 5: we're definitely working on a bit more short term things,
- 23:37Speaker 5: just like trying to enjoy life a bit more because
- 23:39Speaker 5: I think for a long time life wasn't enjoyable. You know,
- 23:42Speaker 5: building up hobbies again, and you know, building up the
- 23:44Speaker 5: things that we like to do, which obviously you know,
- 23:47Speaker 5: takes some money.
- 23:48Speaker 4: We're both into road cycling. Sorry that it's a.
- 23:50Speaker 5: Bit of an expensive hobby, so you know, yeah, putting
- 23:53Speaker 5: money into that and making sure that we're sort of
- 23:55Speaker 5: enjoying life while we're going because I think that it's
- 23:58Speaker 5: so easy to get stuck in down scarcity mindset of like, oh,
- 24:01Speaker 5: we don't have enough, or I shouldn't spend money on
- 24:04Speaker 5: this because we did come from such struggle, and sometimes
- 24:07Speaker 5: they can be a bit of guilt associated with that.
- 24:09Speaker 5: But then, yeah, just trying to get that balance of
- 24:12Speaker 5: doing things that we enjoy now but also creating I
- 24:16Speaker 5: guess some money habits that mean that we continue to
- 24:19Speaker 5: be stable and you know, a good support for our
- 24:22Speaker 5: kids as well in the future, because it's.
- 24:23Speaker 4: Only getting harder to buy a house.
- 24:25Speaker 5: So yeah, been out about how the kids, you know,
- 24:28Speaker 5: buy a house and things like that, or even just
- 24:29Speaker 5: stay at home longer would be amazing as well.
- 24:32Speaker 2: No, it's so true. All right, let's go to a
- 24:34Speaker 2: really quick break because on the flip side, I want
- 24:36Speaker 2: to talk about like the investments that I already know
- 24:38Speaker 2: you've been researching. We haven't dove in yet, but I
- 24:41Speaker 2: know we're going to get there. I want to know
- 24:43Speaker 2: more about this house, any debts, and then we're going
- 24:45Speaker 2: to talk about best and worst money habits, So guys,
- 24:47Speaker 2: don't go anywhere money dives. We are back and I
- 24:53Speaker 2: have been loving this chat, and I feel like there's
- 24:55Speaker 2: just so much potential in your money story now that
- 24:58Speaker 2: you've said, oh, look I do you'd find the podcast
- 25:00Speaker 2: in January and I'm going to like start doing this,
- 25:03Speaker 2: this and this. But I'm touching on or you're touching
- 25:06Speaker 2: on a few like themes that I'm like, oh my god, no,
- 25:09Speaker 2: what do you mean you feel guilty? Or what do
- 25:10Speaker 2: you mean you feel bad? Like we're just starting here,
- 25:13Speaker 2: Like there's no guilt when it comes to money, there's no.
- 25:17Speaker 2: I don't know. I feel like so many times we
- 25:18Speaker 2: crucify ourselves because you go, oh, that was a bad
- 25:21Speaker 2: money decision, Like, yes, do you know what is a
- 25:24Speaker 2: bad money decision? When I got into forty thousand dollars
- 25:26Speaker 2: worth of personal debt if you framed it that way, sorry,
- 25:30Speaker 2: But if I hadn't gotten into forty thousand dollars worth
- 25:32Speaker 2: of terrible personal debt, where would she's on the money
- 25:35Speaker 2: have come from. So I think that sometimes you have
- 25:38Speaker 2: to go through your struggles and come out the other
- 25:41Speaker 2: side to not only appreciate life and the things that
- 25:43Speaker 2: you've created for yourself, but like, sorry, they formed you
- 25:46Speaker 2: into who you are, Like we're not sorry about that.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Like you're clearly an epic human being doing very cool
- 25:52Speaker 2: things and supporting a family. Ten out of ten from me, Like,
- 25:56Speaker 2: I just I don't think that there should be any
- 25:58Speaker 2: guilt there because we all do the best that we
- 26:00Speaker 2: can with the tools and the resources that we have
- 26:02Speaker 2: at the time. Like, let's go back to baby you
- 26:05Speaker 2: you had your second baby at twenty if you could
- 26:08Speaker 2: have done better, and I said, hey, here's a strategy.
- 26:10Speaker 2: I know she would have grasped that, but she didn't
- 26:13Speaker 2: have access to it. So were you doing the best
- 26:16Speaker 2: that you could at the time? One thousand percent? But
- 26:19Speaker 2: now you look back and you're kind of like, oh,
- 26:21Speaker 2: well that wasn't very good. Sorry, our baby money diarist.
- 26:24Speaker 2: She was doing the best she could. We're not mean
- 26:26Speaker 2: to her, We're nice to her, all.
- 26:27Speaker 5: Right, Absolutely, yes, I know, And I am trying to
- 26:30Speaker 5: get better at being kind to myself. And yeah, that
- 26:33Speaker 5: Liney just said, you know, he sort of did the
- 26:34Speaker 5: best of what I had at the time. It is
- 26:36Speaker 5: definitely the theme of this year looking back on my life,
- 26:39Speaker 5: and yeah, sometimes I think I need to be kinder
- 26:41Speaker 5: to myself.
- 26:42Speaker 4: So thank you.
- 26:43Speaker 2: I think you need to too. And if you aren't
- 26:45Speaker 2: going to be kind of just call me up and
- 26:47Speaker 2: I'll aggressively be nice. Thank you money, darrist. Let's talk
- 26:52Speaker 2: about investments for a hot second. You've said before or
- 26:55Speaker 2: in your diary in you said hopefully soon we're going
- 26:57Speaker 2: to start investing. What does that journey like? Is that
- 27:00Speaker 2: something where you're just starting a conversation? Are you starting
- 27:03Speaker 2: the research? How is that going for you?
- 27:06Speaker 4: It's very early days.
- 27:08Speaker 5: It definitely overwhelms me, which I'm from a lot of
- 27:11Speaker 5: Shares on the Money, reading and things like that and
- 27:13Speaker 5: just yeah, things online, Like I can tell it overwhelms
- 27:16Speaker 5: a lot of people, and you know a lot of
- 27:18Speaker 5: the obviously advice is sort of you know, just getting
- 27:21Speaker 5: in there is actually the first sort of hurdle.
- 27:23Speaker 4: But yeah, no, very early days.
- 27:24Speaker 5: I haven't I think I downloaded Chairsyas, but I just
- 27:27Speaker 5: haven't even done anything yet.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Oh look that's six million times further ahead than heaps
- 27:32Speaker 2: of people.
- 27:33Speaker 5: But yeah, I think it's just like, you know, I
- 27:36Speaker 5: have sort of always, you know, a little bit of
- 27:38Speaker 5: money left over each month, and I'm like, oh, you know,
- 27:40Speaker 5: maybe that would be a good idea just to start
- 27:42Speaker 5: sort of putting, just to kind of get my toes
- 27:44Speaker 5: in the water and see how it sort of works.
- 27:45Speaker 5: Because I'm not familiar with shares or anything like that,
- 27:50Speaker 5: Like it's very new to me. It probably makes me
- 27:52Speaker 5: a little bit overwhelmed sometimes thinking.
- 27:55Speaker 2: About it one hundred percent. And that's where we all start.
- 27:58Speaker 2: When I first started looking at shares before I was
- 28:01Speaker 2: even in financial advice, what the hell, what do you mean?
- 28:05Speaker 2: And there's just so many different words and terminology and
- 28:08Speaker 2: like the way things work, and what do you mean
- 28:10Speaker 2: there's going to be a distribution of dividends? Okay, well
- 28:13Speaker 2: when does that happen? Like I knew nothing, and that
- 28:16Speaker 2: can be overwhelming, And that's just where you're starting. But
- 28:18Speaker 2: I promise the more you dip your toes in, the better.
- 28:22Speaker 2: And it's not I don't know. A lot of people go, oh,
- 28:25Speaker 2: I downloaded chairs is but I'm scared to make my
- 28:28Speaker 2: first investment. I've got like a thousand dollars sitting to
- 28:30Speaker 2: the side, and you're like, stop, start with a dollar,
- 28:33Speaker 2: Like start with something that you're like, okay, well, this
- 28:35Speaker 2: is the cost of a cup of coffee. You know,
- 28:37Speaker 2: if I dropped my coffee, it wouldn't be the end
- 28:39Speaker 2: of the world. But it can give you that financial
- 28:41Speaker 2: literacy because I think so much of the time we
- 28:44Speaker 2: especially as women, especially as women with ADHD, how many
- 28:48Speaker 2: times do you over research, over analyze, overthink, and then go,
- 28:52Speaker 2: I'm not ready because you think the further I get
- 28:56Speaker 2: into this research, the more I'm learning and the more
- 28:58Speaker 2: I'm realizing I don't know or anything. Classic analysis paralysis,
- 29:03Speaker 2: classic right. But the reality is ready is a choice.
- 29:06Speaker 2: It is not a feeling like you can't just go, oh,
- 29:09Speaker 2: you know what, I'm actually a genius now, I do
- 29:12Speaker 2: you know? I could run rings around day traders. Let
- 29:15Speaker 2: me make my first investment on charess Like that is
- 29:17Speaker 2: not how people feel. You kind of have to deep
- 29:20Speaker 2: your toes in the water and then watch it and go, oh,
- 29:23Speaker 2: how did that work? Oh okay, well that didn't you know,
- 29:25Speaker 2: even just seeing the silly little processes that don't feel
- 29:29Speaker 2: big but are like, okay, well that's how I put
- 29:31Speaker 2: the money into the account, and then that's how I
- 29:33Speaker 2: picked a share and oh look that's how quick it
- 29:35Speaker 2: ended up in my wallet, and then oh I can
- 29:38Speaker 2: see it through the app on a daily basis here
- 29:40Speaker 2: or goes up and down. Interesting, Like it's one of
- 29:43Speaker 2: those things where ready is a choice. And you can
- 29:47Speaker 2: keep learning because like, at the end of the day,
- 29:49Speaker 2: let's say you invest ten bucks. What if it's on
- 29:51Speaker 2: the worst share of a what happens?
- 29:54Speaker 4: Oh?
- 29:55Speaker 2: Nothing? Okay, cool? Do you know what I mean? Like,
- 29:57Speaker 2: I think, especially as somebody who is I'm the Queen
- 30:00Speaker 2: of analysis paralysis. Ask my whole team, like I spend
- 30:03Speaker 2: six years making a decision that they already knew what
- 30:06Speaker 2: my decision was going to be, like when they pitched
- 30:08Speaker 2: the idea. It's actually very frustrating. But I think sometimes
- 30:12Speaker 2: you just have to do it and go, oh, yeah, right,
- 30:14Speaker 2: well that wasn't the right one, but I can change
- 30:16Speaker 2: because we're not talking about putting our life savings in there.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Please don't do that. That's scary and I think that's
- 30:21Speaker 2: actually terrible idea.
- 30:23Speaker 4: Yeah, no, definitely not. No.
- 30:24Speaker 5: I think it's just sort of get it to start
- 30:26Speaker 5: to develop my education in that space, and yeah, figure
- 30:30Speaker 5: it out, so hopefully I will. Yeah, just give it
- 30:33Speaker 5: a shot, because.
- 30:34Speaker 2: It sounds like you're on the right track though, so
- 30:35Speaker 2: that is very special. Talk to me a little bit
- 30:38Speaker 2: more about your debt. So you've said that you have
- 30:40Speaker 2: a house. Is that the only debt that you have?
- 30:43Speaker 4: Yeah, we only have a house.
- 30:45Speaker 5: So we have had credit cards in the past and
- 30:48Speaker 5: a car loan in the past and all that sort of.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Thing, which but you've paid them all off, paid them off.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Yes, never want to get a credit card again. It
- 30:57Speaker 4: kills me. Yeah, No, We've just got our home.
- 31:00Speaker 5: We did refinance last year and we ended up paying
- 31:04Speaker 5: out our car loan, like so adding it to our homelands.
- 31:06Speaker 5: Our homelan's a bit higher than like what it used
- 31:08Speaker 5: to be, but it was a better interest rate and
- 31:10Speaker 5: we just sort of thought the one payment.
- 31:12Speaker 2: One hundred percent. Nope, I agree, and also like the
- 31:15Speaker 2: interest rate on your car and payment would have gone
- 31:17Speaker 2: down significantly. Yeah.
- 31:19Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a nightmare.
- 31:20Speaker 5: And we had bought the car on finance, Like I
- 31:22Speaker 5: think it just got to the point where I don't
- 31:25Speaker 5: know if I'd do the same thing now.
- 31:26Speaker 4: But we had been driving really old, crappy cars.
- 31:28Speaker 5: I would always be breaking and I had a little
- 31:31Speaker 5: tiny binger with the kids one day and I just
- 31:33Speaker 5: was like, no, I want a new, safer car like
- 31:36Speaker 5: and so you know, I just didn't really even think
- 31:38Speaker 5: about it as when I bought it, and you had
- 31:41Speaker 5: to get a car loan because we didn't have the money,
- 31:42Speaker 5: but looking back now, like as expensive as it was, like,
- 31:46Speaker 5: I'm so glad that we did it. It's reliable. We've
- 31:48Speaker 5: had no car troubles ever since. So it's a hard
- 31:52Speaker 5: one where you know, I'd get like carlons and debt
- 31:55Speaker 5: come sometimes can be not good, but also at the
- 31:56Speaker 5: same time, it got us to a better.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Place one hundred percent. And like I was doing the
- 32:00Speaker 2: maps the other day for a friend of mine who
- 32:02Speaker 2: doesn't have the cash to purchase a car, and I
- 32:05Speaker 2: was like, actually, I've just looked at all your budget
- 32:07Speaker 2: or your finance, Like as much as like a car
- 32:10Speaker 2: loan doesn't sound sexy, it's actually the best option for you,
- 32:12Speaker 2: like you know, shop around, find the best rate, and
- 32:16Speaker 2: organize it. I think that the problem is when we
- 32:18Speaker 2: don't think through these decisions, and it's like you just
- 32:22Speaker 2: automatically get a car loan because you go, well, that's
- 32:24Speaker 2: how things should be, when in reality you maybe didn't
- 32:28Speaker 2: need a new car, or you know, it's impacting your
- 32:30Speaker 2: ability to generate wealth or put food on the table
- 32:33Speaker 2: or live life the way you want to. I think
- 32:35Speaker 2: I'm more about questioning every single decision to make sure
- 32:38Speaker 2: it's the right one for your situation. But it doesn't
- 32:40Speaker 2: mean don't do it. It just means, let's just be really
- 32:43Speaker 2: cautious going into these things because I'm sorry, I actually
- 32:47Speaker 2: do not live in d lulu Land. I'm quite aware
- 32:49Speaker 2: that most people can't afford to outright purchase brand new cars,
- 32:53Speaker 2: but I do want them to be questioning why they
- 32:55Speaker 2: think they need a new car, because nine times out
- 32:57Speaker 2: of ten, it's not a situation like yours, where you're like,
- 33:00Speaker 2: I felt unsafe with my children and I was racking
- 33:03Speaker 2: up a lot of, you know, different expenses on fixing
- 33:06Speaker 2: cars that were just breaking consistently. That's a bit different
- 33:10Speaker 2: to like, oh my god, I keep looking at the
- 33:11Speaker 2: range Rover and everybody online has one, and I can
- 33:15Speaker 2: buy a secondhand one on finite, do you know what
- 33:17Speaker 2: I mean. That's a different story.
- 33:18Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think for us it got.
- 33:20Speaker 5: To the point where we were both dressed driving really
- 33:22Speaker 5: old cars, like three thousand dollar cars, and they just
- 33:24Speaker 5: kept breaking. And by the time we did all the
- 33:26Speaker 5: calculations of how many repairs we've done over a twelve
- 33:29Speaker 5: month period, it was similar to the loan repayment, and
- 33:31Speaker 5: it was like, all right, I'd rather just pray for
- 33:33Speaker 5: the depreciation and the interest. Then yeah, keep repairing a
- 33:36Speaker 5: car that's just not getting me to where I need
- 33:38Speaker 5: to go. So, yeah, we refinanced last year and yeah,
- 33:41Speaker 5: added that onto our home loan. But yeah, it's nice
- 33:43Speaker 5: now just having the one payment per month, which is nice.
- 33:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:46Speaker 2: So what's your home loan currently sitting at.
- 33:49Speaker 5: It's sitting at six hundred and thirty three thousand roughly.
- 33:53Speaker 2: And you purchased I believe you said, six years ago.
- 33:57Speaker 5: Yeah, six years ago, so we've got it for six
- 34:00Speaker 5: ninety six.
- 34:01Speaker 4: So it's a little bit higher than we ideally would
- 34:03Speaker 4: like it at the moment.
- 34:04Speaker 2: That actually doesn't matter at this point, you've got six
- 34:07Speaker 2: million years ahead of you because you're still a baby.
- 34:09Speaker 2: But yes, carry on you. Yeah.
- 34:11Speaker 5: So we brought that in twenty nineteen and it's an
- 34:14Speaker 5: awesome home. We've been able to do a few renovations
- 34:17Speaker 5: and things like that to it. We paid off our
- 34:19Speaker 5: hex that two years.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Ago, both of you, both of us. Yeah, oh my god.
- 34:24Speaker 2: So I was about to be like, do you have
- 34:25Speaker 2: any HEXTX? We always forget to talk about that, but
- 34:28Speaker 2: none there.
- 34:29Speaker 4: No, that was just through work. I don't know how
- 34:31Speaker 4: I did.
- 34:32Speaker 5: I did a job for a little while that had
- 34:33Speaker 5: some overtime, so I was really lucky that I didn't
- 34:35Speaker 5: put extra into it, but just it seemed to bring
- 34:38Speaker 5: my HEX down a lot in that sort of eighteen
- 34:41Speaker 5: month period that I was doing that job, and I
- 34:43Speaker 5: hadn't realized, And so we ended up getting a really.
- 34:47Speaker 4: Big tax return because I hadn't realized that i'd paid
- 34:49Speaker 4: it off.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Because that's a nice position to be in.
- 34:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I've only just learned the mic of isn't like
- 34:54Speaker 5: a live stat of what your hex is. So yeah,
- 34:59Speaker 5: we got a really big time so we're able to
- 35:00Speaker 5: do a few things around the house. So we've redone
- 35:02Speaker 5: our laundry, we've redone the bathroom for the kids, and
- 35:04Speaker 5: we've done the floors. So the house is all sort
- 35:07Speaker 5: of where we wanted at the moment.
- 35:09Speaker 4: Which is nice.
- 35:09Speaker 2: And what do you think the house is worth now?
- 35:11Speaker 5: It's worth about nine to eighty when we had a
- 35:14Speaker 5: value last year.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Oh stop it. So you've got some really nice equity
- 35:18Speaker 2: sitting there should you ever decide to like buy an
- 35:21Speaker 2: investment property or even have some wiggle room, like oh,
- 35:25Speaker 2: that's when you said, oh, it's you know six ninety
- 35:27Speaker 2: six purchase price. I think you said six thirty three
- 35:30Speaker 2: current loan, Like a lot of people will be like,
- 35:33Speaker 2: oh after six years, but she's been sitting on that
- 35:35Speaker 2: and made nearly three hundred grand guys, So I think
- 35:37Speaker 2: that's a pretty good situation to be and if you're sold.
- 35:40Speaker 5: Yeah, it was nice to have the car paid out
- 35:44Speaker 5: in Yeah, so look, it is what it is. We
- 35:47Speaker 5: also did purchase for one hundred, like almost one hundred percent.
- 35:50Speaker 5: We had a guaranteur from my husband's grandfather. He went guaranteur,
- 35:55Speaker 5: which was really kind and we're very lucky, I know,
- 35:58Speaker 5: how privileged you know we are.
- 35:59Speaker 4: We had saved enough money to pay for the stamp duty.
- 36:02Speaker 5: That was our sort of deposit money, just paid for
- 36:04Speaker 5: the stamp duty at right, So our loan was sort
- 36:06Speaker 5: of one hundred percent when we started. So yeah, it
- 36:08Speaker 5: was essentially six ninety six and we had that guaranteur
- 36:11Speaker 5: off in twelve months.
- 36:13Speaker 2: So, oh my god, how good. Yeah.
- 36:15Speaker 5: The property prices so we bought on election day in
- 36:18Speaker 5: twenty nineteen, and it was just the prices was sort
- 36:21Speaker 5: of a bit low and no one wanted.
- 36:22Speaker 4: To buy this house. So we're like, cool, we will
- 36:25Speaker 4: and twelve months later it had shot up.
- 36:28Speaker 2: That's so good, and then you would have got it
- 36:29Speaker 2: reevaluated and then you would have been able to release
- 36:32Speaker 2: the guaranteur and the bank will like see that is
- 36:35Speaker 2: literally my favorite thing ever, right because I own a
- 36:38Speaker 2: mortgage breaking business and talk about this all the time,
- 36:40Speaker 2: and people are always like, oh my god, Like if
- 36:42Speaker 2: I get a guaranteur, I'm impacting them for life. And
- 36:44Speaker 2: it does feel like this, and it is a big thing. Like,
- 36:47Speaker 2: don't get me wrong, we're putting a caveat over someone
- 36:49Speaker 2: else's home. That says if money dires doesn't pay her loan,
- 36:53Speaker 2: this person will be chased up for it. So it
- 36:55Speaker 2: is a significant commitment in saying that. That doesn't mean
- 37:00Speaker 2: that they're going to be on it for the thirty
- 37:02Speaker 2: years that you signed for. Like you can literally get
- 37:05Speaker 2: out of it within the first twelve months if property
- 37:07Speaker 2: prices change or if you know you were able to
- 37:10Speaker 2: smash down a bit of the loan and release that.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Like for a lot of people, having a guarante or
- 37:15Speaker 2: gets them into the market sooner. And like, if you'd
- 37:18Speaker 2: had to save your whole house deposit, especially with two kids,
- 37:22Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure it would have taken you more than
- 37:24Speaker 2: six years. For the average Australian it takes eleven years
- 37:29Speaker 2: to save their whole home deposit. That's a twenty percent deposit.
- 37:33Speaker 2: So sorry you're telling me that because his grandpa decided
- 37:37Speaker 2: to go yep, I will absolutely help you.
- 37:39Speaker 4: Guys.
- 37:39Speaker 2: You were able to build essentially three hundred thousand dollars
- 37:42Speaker 2: worth of wealth to sit there and put you in
- 37:44Speaker 2: a way better position. Oh my god, one thousand percent.
- 37:46Speaker 2: I want to be able to do the same for
- 37:48Speaker 2: my kids.
- 37:48Speaker 5: Yeah, we're so grateful, and it meant that we got
- 37:51Speaker 5: to have some really good conversations about money too. You know,
- 37:54Speaker 5: we committed that we would be paying extra on the
- 37:56Speaker 5: mortgage because.
- 37:57Speaker 4: At the time we were saving and paying rent.
- 38:00Speaker 5: So we just agreed that we'd keep paying that total
- 38:02Speaker 5: amount onto the mortgage, which was about fifteen hundred dollars
- 38:05Speaker 5: more than the mortgage of payment at the time.
- 38:07Speaker 4: So yeah, we were able to do that. And because
- 38:09Speaker 4: we were doing that, we had that habit we have
- 38:11Speaker 4: always paid quite a lot more.
- 38:13Speaker 5: So I think at the moment it's still roughly around
- 38:15Speaker 5: fifteen hundred more a month that we're paying off our mortgage.
- 38:18Speaker 5: And so when the interest rates went up. Yes, we
- 38:21Speaker 5: definitely felt that we didn't have as much sort of
- 38:23Speaker 5: redraw sitting there, for example, like we didn't have to
- 38:26Speaker 5: shift our expenses too much.
- 38:28Speaker 2: So yeah, yes, love love love love. So the other
- 38:32Speaker 2: thing I wanted to ask because I feel like I
- 38:35Speaker 2: don't know, I just I'm questioning everything about your story.
- 38:38Speaker 2: You came and you're like, oh, probably a C plus
- 38:40Speaker 2: or a B minus and I'm just like pix girls delusional.
- 38:43Speaker 2: But okay, so tell me a bit more because I reckon,
- 38:46Speaker 2: you've got some pretty good money habits. What do you
- 38:49Speaker 2: think is your best money habit?
- 38:51Speaker 5: I think it's just been able to like if I
- 38:56Speaker 5: get something in my head, I can just do it
- 38:57Speaker 5: so like I set myself for god last year that
- 38:59Speaker 5: I was going to buy any lunch or coffee up
- 39:01Speaker 5: for example, when I was working, because I started calculating
- 39:04Speaker 5: like how much money I was spending on lunch at
- 39:07Speaker 5: work and to coffee, and I was like, girl, what
- 39:10Speaker 5: are you doing? So when I put my mind to something,
- 39:12Speaker 5: I can really just knuckle down and do it. Like
- 39:14Speaker 5: it doesn't feel like I guess at chore. I've always
- 39:18Speaker 5: ever since I guess, you know, been eighteen and we
- 39:21Speaker 5: got our first rent tool back then, and I think
- 39:23Speaker 5: our rent back then was two ninety five a week
- 39:26Speaker 5: and we had about twelve hundred a fortnight coming in,
- 39:31Speaker 5: so you know, it was always a sort of relatively big.
- 39:34Speaker 4: Portion about income.
- 39:36Speaker 5: And I've always just paid the rent and the bills
- 39:40Speaker 5: and everything as soon as we get paid, pay every bill,
- 39:43Speaker 5: pay all the rent, and then it's sort of like
- 39:45Speaker 5: what are we left with, so that you know, I'm
- 39:46Speaker 5: never behind on those essential things like you know, a
- 39:50Speaker 5: roof of your head and electricity and water and that
- 39:52Speaker 5: sort of thing.
- 39:52Speaker 4: So I think sort of.
- 39:53Speaker 5: Like my best money have it easier, probably like when
- 39:56Speaker 5: I need to, we can sort of knuckle down and
- 39:58Speaker 5: just get on with it and real prioritizing those major
- 40:01Speaker 5: sort of bills and things like that, and then you.
- 40:04Speaker 4: Know, I guess life and FuMB will come later.
- 40:06Speaker 5: But now I'm in a spot where we can kind
- 40:08Speaker 5: of prioritize both pay the mortgage, pay the bills, but
- 40:11Speaker 5: then also have some fun money and that we.
- 40:13Speaker 4: Don't have to have any pressure or anything on.
- 40:15Speaker 2: So yeah, balance, see, you're already working towards it, and
- 40:19Speaker 2: I feel like that is one of the most healthiest
- 40:21Speaker 2: money habits. Ever, it's not like every week I sit
- 40:24Speaker 2: down and you know, do ABCD. It's like I've managed
- 40:27Speaker 2: to find a balance between what works and what needs
- 40:30Speaker 2: to happen and obsessed on the flip side, I mean,
- 40:35Speaker 2: you better be a good bad money habit because you said, oh,
- 40:38Speaker 2: it might be like a C plus, Like, I'll tell
- 40:40Speaker 2: you about it. What's your worst money habit? Come on,
- 40:43Speaker 2: it's got to be good. I feel like the chemistry
- 40:46Speaker 2: between you and I is about to tell me that
- 40:48Speaker 2: your bad money habit is probably something I do. So
- 40:51Speaker 2: tell me, Oh, I.
- 40:53Speaker 4: Love to shop.
- 40:54Speaker 5: I'm very I could be very impulsive, Like I can
- 40:56Speaker 5: be so planned and you know, organized and and it's
- 41:00Speaker 5: awesome and then next minute I'm like, yeah, I want
- 41:03Speaker 5: to go get that new outfit, or I'm going to
- 41:05Speaker 5: the new.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Mecca or where are we shopping Mecca.
- 41:09Speaker 4: Seed Country Road Dish.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Yeah, we could go shopping together. We'd have a great time,
- 41:14Speaker 2: and I feel like we'd enable each other because do
- 41:16Speaker 2: you know what I would do. I'd be like, oh, babe,
- 41:17Speaker 2: I mean those pants are white. That's a staple, that's
- 41:20Speaker 2: an investment. Like if you need me to be the
- 41:24Speaker 2: bad friend, I can be like, I'm not going to
- 41:27Speaker 2: talk you out of a cute purchase.
- 41:28Speaker 4: My friends are too sensible, So yeah, I definitely need that. Yeah.
- 41:34Speaker 5: So I think my bad money habit is I can
- 41:37Speaker 5: just be that bit impulsive and I'll put money aside
- 41:40Speaker 5: for something that is like a genuine thing I'm putting
- 41:43Speaker 5: aside for, Like I've started going to getting a bit
- 41:45Speaker 5: of a Christmas fund and then I'm like, yeah, but
- 41:47Speaker 5: there is a sale. Maybe we'll just take a little
- 41:49Speaker 5: bit of money from that, and like I need to
- 41:51Speaker 5: seriously work about that.
- 41:53Speaker 4: Yeah. So I think just that more impulsive spending side of.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Things, But that goes hand in hand with ADHD. I'm
- 42:00Speaker 2: so sorry. We are suckers for instant gratification. Like if
- 42:04Speaker 2: it is shiny, we are basically bower birds. And I
- 42:08Speaker 2: think the best thing we can do is consistently talk
- 42:10Speaker 2: about that and go, oh, I'm really bad at this
- 42:12Speaker 2: or I'm you know, really struggling with this, so that
- 42:14Speaker 2: we can try different strategies, because a strategy that works
- 42:18Speaker 2: for me might not work for you, and you can
- 42:20Speaker 2: kind of like trial and error and work out what works.
- 42:22Speaker 2: But one of the best things I think you can
- 42:24Speaker 2: do is go back through your finances and get a highlighter.
- 42:28Speaker 2: It's going to be really boring and it's also really confronting,
- 42:31Speaker 2: so you might need a little bit of like a
- 42:32Speaker 2: glass of wine or something to do this. But go
- 42:34Speaker 2: back and just like highlight all of the purchases that
- 42:37Speaker 2: you think were pretty impulsive, and then I want you
- 42:40Speaker 2: to write down how you feel about them now because
- 42:43Speaker 2: I can guarantee, like, don't get me wrong, I'm a
- 42:46Speaker 2: level for it, Mecca, Like you can't tell me like
- 42:50Speaker 2: anything basically, like I know better. But what I also
- 42:53Speaker 2: know is that going through and understanding how those things
- 42:57Speaker 2: actually don't spark that much joy anymore. Yeah, Like, and
- 43:01Speaker 2: it's the bigger purchases where I've gone, all right, well
- 43:03Speaker 2: I really do you know. Let's pretend it's a makeup product,
- 43:06Speaker 2: And right now I'm looking at a Charlotte till Ree
- 43:08Speaker 2: bronzer and I've got it saved in my Mecca cut
- 43:11Speaker 2: on the app and I have for a while. But
- 43:13Speaker 2: I also know I've got a bronzer at home, So
- 43:14Speaker 2: I'm trying to be a responsible adult and be like
- 43:16Speaker 2: I don't need that, right, I don't, but like I
- 43:18Speaker 2: keep looking at it and have you said how beautiful
- 43:20Speaker 2: the packaging is. Like that gets me as well. So
- 43:23Speaker 2: I just know, one I'm not going to go into Mecca,
- 43:26Speaker 2: but two, I'm going to keep thinking about this and
- 43:28Speaker 2: then once I've run out of something else, I'm going
- 43:31Speaker 2: to give myself that as kind of a reward. And
- 43:34Speaker 2: once that happens, I just know I'm going to enjoy
- 43:37Speaker 2: it a little bit more. Like if it was impulsive, yeah,
- 43:40Speaker 2: I'm going to use it, but like if I feel
- 43:43Speaker 2: like I have earned it, and I know that we're
- 43:45Speaker 2: not saying, oh yeah, you worked so hard for that bronzer,
- 43:48Speaker 2: so lame. But if I feel like I have delayed
- 43:51Speaker 2: that purchase as much as possible, and then I decided
- 43:54Speaker 2: I still really want it. It sits on my bathroom counter,
- 43:57Speaker 2: and when I use it feels better Like it just does.
- 44:00Speaker 2: So like, how do we get you to a point
- 44:02Speaker 2: where you're like, impulsive shopping is actually not as good
- 44:04Speaker 2: as I thought it was. I get this really high
- 44:06Speaker 2: dopamine hit at the very start, then I don't give
- 44:09Speaker 2: a shit. So what am I going to do? Because
- 44:11Speaker 2: I can almost guarantee if I go through your wardrobe
- 44:13Speaker 2: there's probably heaps of stuff I want. But also stuff
- 44:16Speaker 2: that you've forgotten about, and also stuff that you're like, oh, yeah,
- 44:19Speaker 2: I really liked that when I was in store, and
- 44:21Speaker 2: I just haven't worn it. Like it's confronting and it's terrible,
- 44:24Speaker 2: but like that's just who we are, so we just
- 44:26Speaker 2: need to be honest about that.
- 44:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:28Speaker 5: I think it's been more mindful sort of probably in
- 44:30Speaker 5: my spending and what I do want to spend things
- 44:33Speaker 5: on is probably my next thing to be working on.
- 44:35Speaker 2: And that's not bad. I think. My first tip and
- 44:37Speaker 2: if you've read my book, you already know it. It's
- 44:39Speaker 2: put twenty four hours between you and you're spending. And
- 44:41Speaker 2: I say that because you know a week would be better,
- 44:43Speaker 2: but like I don't have the patience for a week. Yeah,
- 44:46Speaker 2: Like I just need to tell myself, Victoria, if you
- 44:49Speaker 2: still really want it, you can have it tomorrow. And
- 44:51Speaker 2: most of the time, because I have ADHD, I already
- 44:54Speaker 2: forgot what it was.
- 44:55Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I'm exactly the same. And yeah, we've been
- 44:58Speaker 5: applying that sort of that bit to our just overall
- 45:01Speaker 5: household budget as well, because you know, you decide, oh,
- 45:04Speaker 5: there's a furniture sale, or we should buy any coffee
- 45:06Speaker 5: table or something. If I don't need a coffee table walk.
- 45:08Speaker 4: Out of the store.
- 45:10Speaker 2: It's so rough, isn't it. I totally get that, but
- 45:12Speaker 2: I also don't think that that drags your money score
- 45:15Speaker 2: down to a C plus, Like if I do a
- 45:18Speaker 2: very quick recap, I'm sorry, but you felt pregnant while
- 45:22Speaker 2: in year twelve, got kicked out of school, finished high
- 45:24Speaker 2: school at TAFE, went on to have a second baby
- 45:28Speaker 2: at twenty, and you were at UNI. You did UNI
- 45:31Speaker 2: in a shorter period of time than most people would do.
- 45:34Speaker 2: How I don't know, because I couldn't even balance my
- 45:36Speaker 2: work life balance and I didn't have kids at UNI.
- 45:39Speaker 2: But you popped off. Then you've built your career, have
- 45:42Speaker 2: an incredible job. Both you and your husband own over
- 45:44Speaker 2: six figures, like and be real, that's just going to
- 45:47Speaker 2: keep increasing over time because your university educated. And like
- 45:50Speaker 2: you were saying before, look, I work for state government.
- 45:53Speaker 2: I know there are so many steps ahead of you
- 45:55Speaker 2: in that space, like there's just so much opportunity. Same
- 45:58Speaker 2: with project management for your partner. Yes, he's on a
- 46:00Speaker 2: really good innings of like what one eighty five now,
- 46:03Speaker 2: but like you and I both know that just goes
- 46:05Speaker 2: up from there. Like the more experience they get, the
- 46:07Speaker 2: more money comes in in that space. So like the
- 46:10Speaker 2: trajectory is looking incredible. You've got a really solid mortgage.
- 46:14Speaker 2: You've made some really good decisions when it comes to money.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Sorry you said I had a car loan. You know
- 46:19Speaker 2: we don't have that anymore. It's kind of rolled into
- 46:20Speaker 2: the mortgage. We've had credit cards, but we've paid them
- 46:23Speaker 2: all off. Sorry, you're making really good money decisions, like
- 46:27Speaker 2: really good, and I'm pretty sure your kids are like, oh,
- 46:30Speaker 2: mom and dad, we're really proud of them. Like sorry,
- 46:32Speaker 2: you're putting a roof over your kids' heads. And most
- 46:35Speaker 2: thirty year olds right now still haven't saved for their
- 46:37Speaker 2: first home deposits. And that's not throwing shade, that's just going, hey,
- 46:41Speaker 2: I don't think you realize how much you've achieved because
- 46:44Speaker 2: you've been in survival mode for so long, Like you
- 46:46Speaker 2: probably haven't reflected and been like, oh well actually, because
- 46:50Speaker 2: like let's go back to the mother's group conversation. You're
- 46:52Speaker 2: comparing yourself to people who are probably so far ahead
- 46:55Speaker 2: of you and also have a ten and a twelve
- 46:57Speaker 2: year old because like school mom, I'm assuming that's where
- 47:01Speaker 2: the comparison comes from girl. They're in their forties.
- 47:04Speaker 4: Yeah, they're all in their forties, late forties, yeah, mich to.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Late forties, yeah exactly. And we're comparing ourselves to that,
- 47:09Speaker 2: Like you're thirty, they're looking at you, going, how has
- 47:11Speaker 2: she got her shit together so well? And on the
- 47:14Speaker 2: flip side, you're comparing yourself to your friends that were
- 47:17Speaker 2: out clubbing while you were at home looking after your kids.
- 47:21Speaker 2: And there's no shade on either side. But they've been
- 47:25Speaker 2: enjoying their twenties. And don't get me wrong, I would
- 47:27Speaker 2: feel like I was missing out a little bit too.
- 47:29Speaker 2: And I'm not disregarding what you've been through, but like
- 47:31Speaker 2: it's kind of like they've probably only just started knuckling
- 47:34Speaker 2: down now. So if you compare to them, that's also
- 47:36Speaker 2: a terrible comparison. You're just running your own race. Put
- 47:39Speaker 2: some blinkers on, because you're killing it. I really like,
- 47:42Speaker 2: I'm not going to get you to redo your like
- 47:44Speaker 2: your money grade, but I just know you're sitting closer
- 47:48Speaker 2: to an A than you think you are. But you
- 47:50Speaker 2: keep finding reasons to drag yourself down and go, well,
- 47:53Speaker 2: we're not investing, well, we don't own an investment property. Well,
- 47:57Speaker 2: we just don't have a lot of direction. Good find
- 48:00Speaker 2: that's so fun, Like you're starting here and that's so exciting.
- 48:03Speaker 2: Like there's just so much going on. And I think
- 48:06Speaker 2: with some good planning, a good budget and cash flow
- 48:09Speaker 2: system so that everything flows through, you'll be able to
- 48:11Speaker 2: identify what you can invest, what you can save, what
- 48:14Speaker 2: life looks like in the future. Then we can talk
- 48:16Speaker 2: about investing and getting ahead. Like I'm just so excited.
- 48:20Speaker 4: For you, Thank you, thank you.
- 48:22Speaker 2: This is just this is such a good money story.
- 48:25Speaker 2: Like I just feel like you're right. Your money journey
- 48:27Speaker 2: is about resilience, learning and creating the future that you
- 48:29Speaker 2: only once dreamed of. Like, if I go back to baby,
- 48:33Speaker 2: you you're what's seventeen.
- 48:35Speaker 4: Yeah, seventeen when I found out.
- 48:36Speaker 2: You found out when you were pregnant. Hey, babe, you're
- 48:39Speaker 2: married to the man that you fell pregnant to. You
- 48:42Speaker 2: are deeply in love. You've been together for thirteen years.
- 48:44Speaker 2: You own a house, you've got cars together, your kids
- 48:47Speaker 2: are at school. Your first daughter, Oh my god, she's
- 48:49Speaker 2: just gotten into high school. That's crazy. Did you think
- 48:52Speaker 2: it would work out like this?
- 48:53Speaker 4: Yeah? I know.
- 48:55Speaker 5: When you put it like that, I'm like, Okay, I've
- 48:58Speaker 5: actually done probably better than I'm giving myself credit for,
- 49:00Speaker 5: because this is everything that I did want back then.
- 49:03Speaker 5: And yeah, it is a bit crazy that I, you know,
- 49:07Speaker 5: set ourselves to this sort of goal and this trajectory
- 49:09Speaker 5: and we have got here, And yeah, it is probably
- 49:12Speaker 5: nice to be able to go, you know, even have
- 49:14Speaker 5: a conversation like this and be like reflecting back that, Okay,
- 49:17Speaker 5: I actually have coup a lot of a and have
- 49:19Speaker 5: achieved a lot exactly.
- 49:21Speaker 2: And then also, sorry, you're thirty and you're on six figures,
- 49:24Speaker 2: like crazy, actually crazy to think that you did this yourself,
- 49:30Speaker 2: Like nobody else did this. You did this, and that's incredible.
- 49:32Speaker 2: So like straight a for me, Yes, we can work
- 49:35Speaker 2: on investing. Yes we can work on heaps of stuff,
- 49:37Speaker 2: but not only do we have time, we actually have
- 49:39Speaker 2: the budget. Like there's so much flexibility in your cash
- 49:42Speaker 2: flow that we could ebb and flow with and work
- 49:44Speaker 2: out what that looks like that the potential isn't just
- 49:47Speaker 2: like Okay, well, one of the things we need to
- 49:49Speaker 2: do is work on increasing your income so that we
- 49:51Speaker 2: can achieve the lifestyle you want. We don't have to
- 49:54Speaker 2: do that, Like you're ahead of the game. I'm so
- 49:57Speaker 2: excited and I'm so sad that we're running out of time.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Thank you, Thank you money Darist. It has been an
- 50:03Speaker 2: absolute pleasure having a chat with you today. I feel
- 50:05Speaker 2: very grateful that we've been able to uncover a little
- 50:08Speaker 2: bit more about your money story, learn about you. I
- 50:10Speaker 2: feel like this is a very special money story, and
- 50:13Speaker 2: I'm hoping that there are a few women in our
- 50:15Speaker 2: community who resonate with it as well and go, oh
- 50:18Speaker 2: my god, you're right, I am killing it and comparing
- 50:21Speaker 2: myself to the wrong types of people or the wrong standards.
- 50:25Speaker 2: But I really really appreciate that you've shared your story,
- 50:27Speaker 2: and I just know that our community is going to
- 50:29Speaker 2: be as grateful as I am.
- 50:30Speaker 4: Thank you so much. Thanks for having me on here.
