- 0:21the rich connection and meaning that our life has to offer.
- 0:24So whether this is your first time tuning in or you're a
- 0:27regular listener, know this. What you're building here goes

- 0:33change, and to celebrate the incredible journey of becoming
- 0:36your authentic self. Because when you dare to show up
- 0:38fully, the rewards are immeasurable.
- 0:41So welcome to Beyond the Facade. Let's get started.
- 0:43Hey everybody, I just want to welcome you back.
- 0:48This is a part of a 12 episode series on pulling our core
- 0:52concepts from our phase two and to choose from choose recovery
- 0:55services as we revamp our phase two work, I'm excited to have
- 1:00Alana here. She is going to be hopefully
- 1:03involved with quite a few of these, quite a few of these
- 1:06episodes of this 12 session series.
- 1:09And I just want to restate that the Phase 2 focus, what it is,
- 1:13it's on development and integration, not about behavior
- 1:15correction. So phase one work being around
- 1:18stopping the behavior, Phase two being about integrating.
- 1:21And we're going to introduce today.
- 1:23If you have heard the concept before, parts work great.
- 1:27Hopefully would give you something new that you haven't
- 1:29heard of before or it hits at a different level.
- 1:31But the reason why I wanted Alana here is, is just of her
- 1:34expertise, but also she's she's the brains behind the updated
- 1:40curriculum as part of the Phase 2RE roll out.
- 1:43Alana, any thoughts before I drop us away in here?
- 1:47No, thank you for having me and I'm super, super excited to talk
- 1:51about this A, because we can give you some tools today, but
- 1:56B, this new curriculum we're rolling out is what every
- 2:03partner I meet with want. Like, yes, they want the person
- 2:08that they're in a relationship with to get sobriety, but over
- 2:13and over and over and over and over again, I'm not hearing
- 2:15about sobriety. I'm here hearing about the lack
- 2:18of emotional connection. The need for that they see, for
- 2:23their partner to still do the work, wanting deeper level of
- 2:26intimacy, that the gaslighting still continuing.
- 2:29There's so many things outside of sobriety that partners need
- 2:36to be able to stay in a relationship and have a healthy
- 2:38relationship. And this is what we're diving
- 2:41into. So I am very passionate about
- 2:44this and it has been my passion project for man.
- 2:48We've been talking about this, working on this for a long time.
- 2:54I'm so happy and so appreciate you so much for having that re
- 2:58roll out. OK, so last time, episode number
- 3:02one of the 12 was we were talking about emotional
- 3:04capacity. And it's how the question was
- 3:08what's happening inside of me and my capacity to hold things
- 3:11when it disappears. So this is going to build really
- 3:14well on this. So let me start by naming the
- 3:16experience. Here's the experience.
- 3:19I'm feeling hijacked by my reactions.
- 3:22I don't agree with what I'm feeling.
- 3:27What I'm feeling right now feels really intense.
- 3:28And later I find myself going like, I don't actually agree
- 3:31with what I thought. I don't agree with what I did or
- 3:34what I believe in that moment. What was that about?
- 3:37And I just want to highlight the confusion of saying I don't know
- 3:40why I reacted that way. Well, there were there was a
- 3:42part of me that wanted one thing and there's a part of me that
- 3:44wanted another thing. I really want to justice when my
- 3:48partner was saying something. I really want a fairness.
- 3:50And now why in the heck do I not care about fairness so much?
- 3:53Why now I'm feeling like, man, she's been through so much.
- 3:57Of course it's not fair. Like why was I so focused on the
- 4:00fair when it felt like it really mattered a little bit ago?
- 4:02So we just that internal conflict that we have, we want
- 4:06to give it a new lens to look at and we call that parts work.
- 4:09And it's well, and can I just say her partners?
- 4:12It can feel like a Doctor Jekyll, Mr. Hyde.
- 4:15You feel like you have two different people.
- 4:17One minute your partner or your spouse is creating safety and
- 4:23having levels of empathy and is apologizing.
- 4:28And then later they're emotionally triggered, hijacked,
- 4:32as you said, and they're being defensive and short and cold.
- 4:36And you feel like, Oh my gosh, which version am I going to get?
- 4:41And so I think both sides of the relationship really struggle
- 4:46with this. Yeah, so let's just start with
- 4:50that. The state that this episode is
- 4:53going to want to introduce it in or we want to introduce it in
- 4:56the parts work is the modality is the language we use to
- 5:00understand this internal experience that we have.
- 5:02OK, if you all haven't seen it before, please, please, please
- 5:05watch it. Watch both inside out movies.
- 5:08It's based off of IFS internal family systems parts work and
- 5:12what re watch it again, like if you maybe you've been looking at
- 5:15it just so you can look at our internal perspective a little
- 5:18differently with because the goal is to have more compassion
- 5:20at the end of the day, because it'll give us more runway, it'll
- 5:23give us more gas in the fuel tank.
- 5:26OK, so here's the core concept. You are not your parts.
- 5:30OK, Many of the men that I work with experience like strong
- 5:34internal contradictions. I already reference that they
- 5:37want connection, but they also push it away at the same time.
- 5:42Like they want honesty while they're hiding.
- 5:45They want like growth at the same time that they're resisting
- 5:48it. It's like I even feel inside of
- 5:50me like because it's so much of my experience, this is like,
- 5:54this is madness inside of me, these contradictions, and I'm
- 5:58confused. I have shame around it because I
- 6:01feel like something's not clear one time versus the another.
- 6:06So I think just introducing what parts actually are there and if
- 6:12you want to add your piece and after this, I'd appreciate it.
- 6:14But parts, I don't know what is it the often I think I was
- 6:19afraid of, which is am I crazy? Do I have a disorder?
- 6:23Do I have a personality prompt personality disorder?
- 6:26What's going on? Lana, do you mind speaking about
- 6:28a little bit specifically as a therapist?
- 6:31Yeah, that's a big question a lot of people have.
- 6:34And addiction, when we have any type of addiction, we have a lot
- 6:39of what we call protector parts. And when parts are running the
- 6:43show, they will always default to protection over connection
- 6:48always. And so if we don't heal our
- 6:51parts, then you think about that, that they will always
- 6:54block connection and connection with our self and connection
- 6:58with others. And so I really like how IFS
- 7:03breaks it down into you have protectors, which are a
- 7:08combination of managers and firefighters.
- 7:11And I don't want to go too in depth in this because sometimes
- 7:14we lose people, but they're all protectors.
- 7:18Firefighters go, this is too big, I need to shut it down.
- 7:21Managers are trying to manage the situation, but they're both
- 7:24protectors. So we have these protector parts
- 7:28that are trying to protect these exiled parts.
- 7:32Of us. Those wounded parts that are
- 7:35really tender and really sensitive, and a lot of times we
- 7:39can't even access those really deep wounded parts because
- 7:43protectors are so good at their job and addiction is a type of
- 7:46protector. Yeah.
- 7:48And I want to jump in there with that.
- 7:49So what parts actually do? It's really important why they
- 7:52exist. The word describes of protectors
- 7:55because you mentioned protector parts and bloated parts.
- 7:57Those parts hold things for us. They hold emotions, they hold
- 8:02beliefs, they hold impulses, they hold reactions.
- 8:05And those things were developed before your adult self had
- 8:09capacity. OK, so this isn't something that
- 8:12has happened since you got caught or recently or was just
- 8:16an addiction thing or whatever it was.
- 8:19This was again, beliefs, emotions, types of it's ways
- 8:23that we start to function and parts of us parts of us develop
- 8:28strategy for to be able to survive this life.
- 8:30That's where I liked where you were talking about survival to
- 8:32begin with. So those there are there's
- 8:34protective parts and there's wind parts.
- 8:36And I you bring up such an important piece because I feel
- 8:39like especially when we do our parts work intensive, it takes a
- 8:44while to really start to understand that parts job is
- 8:49always to help. Even if their way that the part
- 8:52is going about helping doesn't feel like helping.
- 8:56It is always to help. And that can be really confusing
- 9:01because if a protector part is using really maladaptive coping
- 9:05your brains like, but it's not helping.
- 9:07I hate this part. I want to get rid of this part
- 9:10and it can be really confusing. But I promise you, every time,
- 9:16the deeper we are able to go down and truly see a where that
- 9:21part started and why it's there, and then start healing the part,
- 9:25we can see and have compassion for the part of the ways that
- 9:29it's trying to help. And as we heal it, we can
- 9:33actually start giving that part a different job so it doesn't
- 9:38have to act in potentially destructive or maladaptive ways.
- 9:42OK, that's so good. That's so good.
- 9:44So we often try to find names. So if you did watch the movie
- 9:47Inside Out or you're going to, you'll notice they had names for
- 9:50the parts or the characters. They had joy, sadness, disgust,
- 9:55anger. So we're let's just name a few
- 9:57of them that we start to identify in this work.
- 9:59We start to give addiction as a name of a part.
- 10:02By the way, these don't have to exist for you.
- 10:04OK? We're just giving you some so
- 10:05you can identify them a little bit to understand what the the
- 10:08concepts we talked about in phase two.
- 10:10Avoidance is a part, anger is a part that's on the movie inside
- 10:13out. Numbing is a part, perfectionism
- 10:16as a part, control is a part. So all these function as parts
- 10:21rather than like a character flaw, like something that's just
- 10:24broken and wrong with this. It is that way of surviving.
- 10:27Why men get emotionally hijacked and why they tend to the men
- 10:33that I work with in my experiences is why do we get
- 10:37hijacked? And emotionally emotional
- 10:40hijacking occurs when parts take over without our awareness.
- 10:44So the reason we introduced this real language in this concept is
- 10:47because once we name it, we can do something with it.
- 10:50So emotional hijacking if that happens instead of going like,
- 10:52man, I just must be lack no self-control.
- 10:56No, what we're trying to do is we're trying to get it awareness
- 10:59of the a part of this that existed double survive is now in
- 11:02charge and that nervous system that we experience our nervous
- 11:05system is shifting into protection.
- 11:07It's shifting into something that now we have something
- 11:11that's driving before we have consciousness.
- 11:14The and we don't. And that's where choice pops in
- 11:17is when we're conscious again. And then because we can't just
- 11:21weaponize this stuff. We can't just say, well, that
- 11:23really wasn't me or, or that's just addiction.
- 11:27That's not me. We want to create awareness.
- 11:29So without awareness of our parts, we don't really, we, we
- 11:34tend to like over identify with those parts or that behavior.
- 11:38We tend to disassociate from reality and that parts work.
- 11:43If somebody here, maybe I'm getting ahead of myself a lot,
- 11:46but it's parts where it actually takes it from a place where we
- 11:51can start to have accountability and not so much to weaponize and
- 11:55it allows us to be accountable for what we're experiencing
- 11:57internally. OK.
- 11:59Can I just say, I'm so glad you you've said that and brought up
- 12:02the accountability because I think that is a big fear of
- 12:04partners. And you're right, I'll see
- 12:07people who are learning about parts swing into almost now like
- 12:12blaming the parts and almost using it as a free pass.
- 12:15And that's really scary for partners that they'll do that.
- 12:20And so when you say no, what we're talking about is
- 12:23accountability because in IFS they use a term called blended.
- 12:27And when we're really blended with a part, we can't tell the
- 12:31difference from us, like our core self of who we really are
- 12:36and that part that it feels like all of us.
- 12:39I'll just use an example with AB Trade Partner.
- 12:41When somebody goes through betrayal for the first time and
- 12:44they have just learned and they're completely emotionally
- 12:47dysregulated, betrayal is all they can think, all they can
- 12:51breathe, all they do. And so that betrayed part is
- 12:55running the show almost 100% of the time.
- 12:59And as you start to heal, I would find myself saying
- 13:03something along the lines of, I am so triggered right now and my
- 13:07part wants to strangle you. My betrayed brain wants to
- 13:11strangle you. And I hate you so much.
- 13:14And I don't actually hate you, but I'm so triggered right now
- 13:17and I can't talk. And so I'm able to step out of
- 13:20that part and unblend to recognize this is my trigger,
- 13:25it's not me. But that part definitely feels
- 13:27that way and I need to do some work so I can get grounded and
- 13:32come back into self. The idea is we go from being
- 13:36very blended with these parts where it truly like it does feel
- 13:39like you and we start creating a little distance so we can start
- 13:44telling the difference about who we really are versus a different
- 13:48wounded parts. And for a lot of people, because
- 13:53they've never done this type of deeper level emotional work,
- 13:58most people are very blended with their parts and they think
- 14:01this is who I really am, which plays into a lot of layers of
- 14:04shame. Yeah, which we can work through
- 14:08We're. Going to take a quick break for
- 14:10a moment. I want to let you know of some
- 14:11things that we have coming up at Choose Your Carvery Services.
- 14:17If you're a man who's trying to show up differently for your
- 14:19partner after betrayal, then listen closely.
- 14:22The Helper Heal Intensive is a four day immersive experience
- 14:25built for men who are ready to take responsibility, build
- 14:29emotional skill, and become safer partners.
- 14:31This isn't talk therapy. It's a hands on training in how
- 14:34to regulate, listen and respond without getting defensive when
- 14:38things get hard at home. You'll work alongside other men
- 14:41who are also serious about change in a focused,
- 14:44confidential setting, so you're not trying to figure this out
- 14:47alone. My name is Hallie Roderick, and
- 14:49I'm both a professional and someone who's lived through
- 14:51betrayal recovery. Our team is here to give you the
- 14:54structure, the tools, and the feedback you need to show up
- 14:57with consistency and integrity in a way that supports real
- 15:00safety for your wife. You'll leave with a clear plan
- 15:04for how to act differently, communicate better, and continue
- 15:07rebuilding trust when you go home.
- 15:10Check out the show notes For more information or how to
- 15:12register. If you're serious about helping
- 15:14her heal, this is where you start.
- 15:19Let's get back to our episode. OK, so I have a shame part
- 15:24popping up for me because there's a part of me that says
- 15:25no, don't talk about this because it's so new for you, but
- 15:29they're OK. So I want to use the word self
- 15:31and we want to talk about the role of self.
- 15:33So we have parts, protector parts, wounded parts, whatever
- 15:36it might be, and we get hijacked because we have a part that's in
- 15:40charge, we don't have awareness over.
- 15:41And then there's and having awareness creates accountability
- 15:47and OK, so the role of self, and this is where we'll get way into
- 15:51the weeds in the group setting, OK.
- 15:53And in the program itself, the self is not a part, OK?
- 15:57It's a describing, it's a it's a description of an experience
- 16:01that we have. It's the organizing center of a
- 16:04system. So we have many parts in play.
- 16:06I just named a bunch of them. And the self is characterized by
- 16:10like resins. It's a it's characterized as
- 16:13like the experience itself, a presence of curiosity, of calm,
- 16:18of clarity, of compassion. And So what happens is we're
- 16:22growing in emotional maturity and it requires we call it self
- 16:27leadership. So rather than one part
- 16:29dominating and one part being in charge, it's allowing the system
- 16:34to integrate and to become tolerant and appreciative of
- 16:38each other instead of being at odds within self.
- 16:41And that self energy, I'll just say it again.
- 16:43It's characterized as as as curiosity.
- 16:47It's characterized as calm and as clarity.
- 16:49So it's about identifying, well, I don't have self energy right
- 16:52now. This is, I'm feeling there's
- 16:55parts of me that are running the show and it's creating awareness
- 16:57around that. Anything you want to say on
- 16:59that, Alana? Yeah, I will never forget when
- 17:02we did our first intensive with parts work and we did a role
- 17:08play and we were, we were having people play somebody's different
- 17:13parts and they had to get from one point to a different point
- 17:20and go through some challenges that were normal for us to just
- 17:24go through in our life. And at one point there was
- 17:28somebody who was given the test to play the role of self.
- 17:34And as they were trying to play the role of self, they were
- 17:39giving advice of, hey, you need to do this and you really love
- 17:42your wife and so you need to not act out and.
- 17:45You need to do more empathetic. You need.
- 17:47To yeah. But they were, they had clarity
- 17:50and they were calm and they were confident.
- 17:53And which are some of these eight CS that Self has?
- 17:57But they were giving advice. They were telling what to do.
- 18:02They weren't curious, they weren't with compassion.
- 18:06And but nobody in the room, nobody in the room could see at
- 18:13that given moment that was actually a part.
- 18:16It was a manager part. It was a very, very good manager
- 18:19part that was disguised as self. And, and I remember when we
- 18:24discovered this, everybody in the room was like.
- 18:27Oh. Oh, I have a manager part for
- 18:31sure that's trying to get me to act in my values, but that's not
- 18:35actually itself. And I bring this up to for you
- 18:40to have compassion around learning this and really
- 18:45starting to discover yourself and your internal leadership is
- 18:49not a quick thing. So you don't just hear this list
- 18:52and I'm going to rattle them off of the ACS, curiosity,
- 18:56compassion, clarity, connectedness, creativity,
- 19:00courage, confidence and calm. And then they also add the five
- 19:05PS, which is patience, presence, persistence, perspective and
- 19:10playfulness that you don't get to that and recognize that and
- 19:15know how to embrace it without doing work around it.
- 19:18Because I feel like sometimes you hear podcasts and we just
- 19:21kind of throw it out of like, well, this is what self looks
- 19:24like. And then you go like, I'm trying
- 19:27to be in self and I don't feel like this is working.
- 19:30So I don't think parts work is working for me.
- 19:33And that's where I just want to have a lot of compassion for you
- 19:37to say, you're going to hear this today and there's levels of
- 19:43awareness. But then after that, awareness
- 19:47becomes you're starting to practice and to learn and to
- 19:51start to take off the layers and explore and dissect.
- 19:56And then from there, you're starting to integrate with more
- 19:59practicing. And so there's this process of
- 20:02shifting to really get to this place where we can start to heal
- 20:06our parts and start to tap into self and then really start to
- 20:11have that healing that we're looking for it.
- 20:13It's not a quick overnight fix. Yeah, so it took me forever and
- 20:19I'm still grasping it. But I know I am.
- 20:21Even though I talk about the concept, I'm still grasping it,
- 20:24which is self is not a part, OK, It's, and this is where I got
- 20:29this quote up in front of me. It's the organizing center of
- 20:31the system. OK, so self is not the part,
- 20:33it's the organizing center of the system.
- 20:35It's like the energy around the system itself.
- 20:39And I think compassion is, I always say things like it's a
- 20:42black and white. So this is going to sound a
- 20:43little black and white. Compassion is the one that I'm
- 20:46like. Compassion and curiosity are the
- 20:48ones that are really, I noticed with myself and a lot of the men
- 20:52that I'm around, they think that there's self energy, but it's a
- 20:56part because compassion and curiosity don't exist within
- 20:59self, but not compassion for what they're dealing with and
- 21:03there's not compassion. Some curious of curiosity and
- 21:05why? So, and usually parts are
- 21:08showing up that are blocking self, that are afraid that if
- 21:13you'll have compassion that you will give yourself a free pass.
- 21:17Or there's parts that are afraid that if you start getting
- 21:20curious, oh, what are we going to uncover?
- 21:23And that's why I say it's layered, because even in trying
- 21:26to access stuff, you have parts trying to block that or that
- 21:31don't trust the system to let self run the show.
- 21:36Yep, absolutely. So you already did the Solana,
- 21:38but I wanted to, in a little bit of a relational translation
- 21:41here, just speak to the betrayed partner.
- 21:44So when your partner's working there recovery, when parts are
- 21:47running the system, you're going to experience a lot of
- 21:50unpredictability, OK, a bunch of inconsistency and a lot of
- 21:54emotional whiplash. OK, so we just want to you, we
- 21:58want you to know and notice also what your partner's parts look
- 22:02like. Not that your job is to manage
- 22:04those parts, to contain those parts, to teach those parts, but
- 22:08to know what they are and protect your driven behavior.
- 22:11It's going to feel like that manipulative.
- 22:13It's going to feel super unsafe and and I just want to be able
- 22:19to maybe give the invite of knowing how my parts show up as
- 22:24a betrayed partner in relation to when my partner's part show
- 22:27up. So if I'm working with betrayed
- 22:30partner, I'm like, OK, self LED presence.
- 22:31That's what we're going for. We're going to work on slowing
- 22:34things down and be more grounded.
- 22:36Being attuned to your partner's nervous system.
- 22:38You have to be attend to your nervous system before you can be
- 22:40attend to your partner's nervous system.
- 22:42Awareness of our parts don't automatically create self
- 22:46leadership, OK? Protectors don't step aside
- 22:50because we simply understand them.
- 22:53Parts work is going to require repeated practicing, OK over and
- 22:57over and over again. Noticing those parts of the
- 23:00slowing them down and engaging with them, staying curious.
- 23:04When we're under stress, we're under pressure.
- 23:06We actually start to become oh shoot, what's the word?
- 23:11We become more tolerant of pain when we start to become more
- 23:15compassionate and we sit in it for longer, OK.
- 23:19We, the men that I work with, including myself, want to get
- 23:22rid of those parts and want to read because they want to
- 23:24reinforce that the inner conflict is bad.
- 23:27So I got to get rid of it. But it's not about getting rid
- 23:29of, it's about integrating. And it's going to happen through
- 23:32a lot of work and through relationship, not force.
- 23:35Yeah. So this is where partners
- 23:38sometimes struggle. A lot of them is they will
- 23:45partners will discover what some of their spouses or partners
- 23:52parts are. And a lot of times they don't
- 23:55like the parts. So they're also trying to make
- 24:00those parts go away and they don't like the parts and they're
- 24:03doing the exact same thing the system is doing and
- 24:06unfortunately reinforcing the system that isn't working.
- 24:11And I'm not putting blame on partners, like it makes sense,
- 24:14but that's why partners have to be doing their own work to give
- 24:20room also for the individual to do their work because each
- 24:26person has their own parts that need to be healed.
- 24:29But in a relationship, if you're constantly attacking their
- 24:36parts, and I know like we have all the reasons why you are
- 24:41justified to, but relationally it will impact their work.
- 24:48And when your parts are reinforcing what their protector
- 24:52parts are already doing, it does slow down the work in the
- 24:55progress. And I don't want to say that
- 24:57because I don't want it to sound like I'm blaming partners
- 25:00because I'm not at all. All of the ways that we show up
- 25:03with B trial trauma make total sense, and we also have to know
- 25:09and understand our own relational impact.
- 25:12Sometimes with the B trial trauma lens, we give partners
- 25:17and myself included, I gave myself like certain free passes
- 25:21for being betrayed, for having something happened to me that I
- 25:24didn't choose, I didn't ask for, I didn't want.
- 25:26So of course I'm responding to it.
- 25:30But at some point, we have to be able to step back and realize
- 25:34what relational impacts we have and in which ways we are
- 25:38helping, in which ways we're hurting.
- 25:40Because sometimes the things that we don't want the most,
- 25:43unfortunately we're subconsciously reinforcing.
- 25:47And so we have to really just learn what our own parts are
- 25:51doing and ways that they're reacting and responding.
- 25:54And I'm not telling you that you can't react and respond, but we
- 25:58also just want to learn and become aware of impacts in every
- 26:03single way. It's a later work down the road,
- 26:06but I plant those seeds because if partners never get to that
- 26:12awareness, they will stay stuck and the relationship will stay
- 26:15stuck. There's a there's systems in
- 26:18play here. There's an internal system,
- 26:20there's a relational system and attending to that system and
- 26:24learning which parts of the two rebuild breakdown really matter.
- 26:30OK, so here's your phase two invitation.
- 26:32And maybe you're already doing this work.
- 26:33And if you are, great, maybe it applies to you and now's a good
- 26:36time to take an action. You can you all get to decide.
- 26:39OK, So what phase two, phase two men's groups do is it creates a
- 26:41space to slow down and build a relationship with our internal
- 26:44system. OK, So it gets a chance for for
- 26:48us to be able to for the men in those groups to be able to be
- 26:50guided and recognize those protectors and how they show up,
- 26:54access the wounded parts of them that need safety and strengthen
- 26:59that self leadership to learn what that actually looks like.
- 27:01And that work focuses on integration rather than control
- 27:05and parts work in phase two supports that emotional maturity
- 27:09that I that is being asked for. I want to be more emotional.
- 27:12I'm sure I want to respond differently.
- 27:14And so our nervous system can regulate and then that
- 27:16relational repair can be a part of that process.
- 27:19And this is where men learn to relate to themselves
- 27:21differently, not just start behaving differently, but
- 27:24relating to themselves differently.
- 27:27So anyway, in the next episode, we're going to go on, we're
- 27:29going to build from here. And that's a nugget for you and
- 27:33a little bit of a glimpse of what part of our face to work
- 27:37work looks like with parts work. So I was going to spend time
- 27:40with you and we will talk to you next time to ya.
