Transcript
- 0:00Have you ever noticed that sometimes the guilt shows up before you've even done anything
- 0:07wrong?
- 0:08You say no to something.
- 0:10You take a rest just for a few minutes.
- 0:13You disappoint someone.
- 0:15You forget something small and suddenly your brain starts acting like you've completely
- 0:21failed as a mom.
- 0:23Sometimes guilt isn't conviction.
- 0:26Sometimes it's just conditioning and sometimes, honestly, moms are carrying responsibilities
- 0:32that God never asked them to carry.
- 0:35We are going to unpack this in this episode.
- 0:40If you're tired of people pleasing, caring too much, and wondering why peace still feels
- 0:45so hard to hold on to, you're in the right place.
- 0:49Hi, I'm Lori, mom, former people pleaser, and your Boundaries coach.
- 0:54Here we talk about how to protect your peace, set healthier boundaries, and get clear on
- 1:00what actually matters so that you can build a life that feels lighter, calmer, and more
- 1:05satisfying.
- 1:06So let's stop the chaos for a minute, moms, catch our breath, and get into this next episode.
- 1:17Welcome back to Healthy Boundaries for Moms.
- 1:20This is your midweek reset.
- 1:22And today it's going to be all about a quick mindset shift when you feel that mom guilt
- 1:31start kicking in.
- 1:32And I'm going to give you a very simple acronym to help you pause and to help you identify
- 1:40what's really happening underneath this guilt and to help you make decisions from a place
- 1:47of clarity instead of that panic that we feel.
- 1:52So I think one of the biggest things we have got to realize as moms is that not all guilt
- 2:00is conviction.
- 2:03Sometimes it's conditioning.
- 2:05So this is years of believing that good moms do everything and loving moms should never
- 2:11disappoint anyone.
- 2:14Strong moms, they don't need rest.
- 2:16And selfless moms always say yes.
- 2:20And eventually guilt, it's just what, automatic, right?
- 2:24It just shows up and we carry it around.
- 2:28And it's like a Jesus complex we're living with.
- 2:32We begin acting like the little G God in our family's lives, because beneath all this,
- 2:39we believe it's our job to hold it all together, to fix everyone's emotions, prevent all disappointment,
- 2:49manage every possible outcome, and hold on to everyone's happiness every day.
- 2:58But that pressure was never ours to carry.
- 3:02There's a reason, guys.
- 3:04God gave us only two hands, two legs, and 24 hours in a day.
- 3:11We were never designed to do this work of like 10 people while emotionally carrying
- 3:20all of our families around us.
- 3:23And our limits, they're not flaws.
- 3:26There's just reminders that we're human.
- 3:29We're not God.
- 3:31And when we live under that constant guilt, we start making decisions out of a panic and
- 3:40reactivity instead of clarity.
- 3:45So you're going to have to level with me here, moms.
- 3:48This guilt turns into what we call catastrophizing.
- 3:53You know what I mean when the one missed moment, that one disappointed child, one mistake,
- 4:01one boundary, and suddenly our brains are jumping straight from, I'm ruining my child.
- 4:07They're going to resent me forever.
- 4:09I failed.
- 4:10This is going to damage them.
- 4:12They're going to end up on the street and homeless, right?
- 4:15We can turn this one uncomfortable moment into like a 10-year life prediction in about
- 4:21what, 30 seconds.
- 4:23We go from I forgot spirit day to now my kid's on drugs, right?
- 4:29I mean, I'm being extreme, but we do this.
- 4:32We catastrophize.
- 4:34But healthy parenting is not built on perfection, right?
- 4:39It's built on love, consistency, repair, and presence, grace built over time.
- 4:47And part of catastrophizing is believing that each moment completely determines our
- 4:54child's future and we are losing perspective and we are not sovereign over our children's
- 5:02lives.
- 5:03God is.
- 5:05We know this, but we don't know this.
- 5:07You know what I mean sometimes?
- 5:09So I want you to practice the pause reset.
- 5:14This is an acronym for you to remember when that guilt starts rising this week, okay?
- 5:20I want you to remember this quick reset pause.
- 5:23It's P, which is pause.
- 5:27It's before reacting or apologizing or fixing or rescuing or automatically shooting out
- 5:32that yes, we're going to pause.
- 5:35Don't let guilt make that decision for you.
- 5:39The A in pause is acknowledge the red flag.
- 5:43You're going to recognize this might be mom guilt talking here.
- 5:48Notice the urgency, notice the panic, notice the fear of disappointing people.
- 5:56So when you get that awareness, it will help you to break out of being on autopilot.
- 6:02Okay, so the U is uncover the belief because underneath this, there is a belief, okay,
- 6:11that is driving this guilt.
- 6:14It might be good moms do everything.
- 6:17It could be if someone's upset with me, I've done something wrong.
- 6:21Or maybe I'm responsible for everyone's happiness.
- 6:26Or how about rest is selfish.
- 6:29Okay, moving on to S is speak the truth.
- 6:33So you're going to replace that lie with the truth.
- 6:37So you can try on some of these truths if they fit for you.
- 6:40I can love my family without carrying everything.
- 6:45Or disappointing someone is not harming them.
- 6:50Or how about my worth is not based on performance.
- 6:56God did not ask me to be everything for everyone.
- 7:00Okay, so here's the E, evaluate through your priorities.
- 7:06So this is going to be like a filter of sorts.
- 7:08Before you make the decision, ask, does this align with my values?
- 7:14Does this align with my priorities?
- 7:17Am I acting from peace or am I panicking?
- 7:21Is guilt making this decision for me?
- 7:25That pause is going to create clarity.
- 7:29So Jesus regularly stepped away.
- 7:32He rested.
- 7:34He disappointed people's expectations all the time.
- 7:38There were sick people He didn't heal that day.
- 7:41There were crowds wanting more from Him.
- 7:44There were still people asking for His time and attention.
- 7:48But we read that He rested, He withdrew, and He made space to be with the Father a priority.
- 7:58Because constant availability is not the same thing as obedience.
- 8:02And I think some moms need to give themselves permission to understand that you can love
- 8:09your family deeply, and you don't have to keep putting yourself on that altar of guilt.
- 8:16You can be a great mom, but still have limits.
- 8:20These are not mutually exclusive.
- 8:22You can be faithful and still rest.
- 8:25And you can disappoint the people that you love, but still be walking in obedience.
- 8:31And in Mark 6 31 it says, come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.
- 8:38So honestly I just think some of us need to remember that rest and boundaries, human limits,
- 8:44these were all part of God's design from the very beginning.
- 8:49The goal isn't to never feel guilt.
- 8:51The goal is just to stop letting guilt run your life.
- 8:55Because sometimes the healthiest thing we can choose to do is to let someone be disappointed
- 9:02and still be at peace with ourselves.
- 9:05And sometimes the reset you need most is realizing guilt is not always telling you the truth.
