- 0:00If you've ever felt like you can't hear yourself think, like you're constantly reacting, constantly
- 0:07needed and constantly on, today is the episode for you, my friend, because I want to share
- 0:14something personal.
- 0:16It's about what I learned on a solo cabin trip I took for my birthday last year and
- 0:20the three things that came out of that that honestly have changed how I live my everyday
- 0:25life.
- 0:27If you're tired of people pleasing, caring too much, and wondering why peace still feels
- 0:32so hard to hold on to, you're in the right place.
- 0:36Hi, I'm Lori, mom, former people pleaser, and Your Boundaries coach.
- 0:41Here we talk about how to protect your peace, set healthier boundaries, and get clear on
- 0:47what actually matters so that you can build a life that feels lighter, calmer, and more
- 0:52satisfying.
- 0:53So let's stop the chaos for a minute, moms, catch our breath, and get into this next episode.
- 1:04Welcome back to Healthy Boundaries for Moms.
- 1:07So last year for my birthday, I did something I had never done before.
- 1:12Y'all, I got online and I booked a cabin just for myself, and I didn't realize how much
- 1:20I needed that.
- 1:21No one asking me questions, no decisions for anyone else, no schedule to manage except
- 1:27my own.
- 1:29And even the drive there felt different.
- 1:32So picture this, I had my 90s country music blaring.
- 1:35I had the moonroof open, just driving, singing, and enjoying it.
- 1:41And I remember thinking, I really, really like this.
- 1:45Not because it was anything fancy, but this was just for me.
- 1:49This was me.
- 1:51And when I got to the cabin, the host had left a bottle of wine that was waiting just
- 1:55for me.
- 1:56And I remember thinking, this is so peaceful.
- 2:00Y'all, it was quiet.
- 2:03It was beautiful.
- 2:04I could just be.
- 2:07Now I will say, nighttime in the woods by yourself is slightly uncomfortable.
- 2:13I did check several of the doors multiple times to make sure they were locked.
- 2:19But even that I handled.
- 2:21And what surprised me most wasn't just that I enjoyed it, it was what I realized about
- 2:27myself while I was there.
- 2:29Because I thought I was just going there for a needed break, but what I actually needed
- 2:35was the space to hear myself.
- 2:38So one of the things that really stood out to me on this trip is just how uncomfortable
- 2:44it felt at first to just be with myself.
- 2:48Not because anything was wrong, but because I just wasn't used to it.
- 2:53It just seemed a little awkward, to be honest.
- 2:57And I think we've created lives where we're constantly responding, right?
- 3:03We're reacting to things, we're checking on things, we're always moving, or we're always
- 3:08waiting on something to tell us what to do.
- 3:12To get that information in and then move on that, like what to think, what to feel.
- 3:18And when all of that goes quiet, it feels awkward.
- 3:24Because honestly, being with ourselves is not a muscle that we've been using.
- 3:31We are so used to all the schedules and the routines and people needing us and things
- 3:35coming at us from every direction, that when none of that is there, we don't even know
- 3:41what we want.
- 3:43I remember sitting there thinking, do I want to go inside or do I want to go outside?
- 3:50Do I want to make a fire or not?
- 3:53And what do I want for lunch?
- 3:55And none of those decisions had anything to do with anyone else.
- 3:59And it wasn't again, like, what does my family need or what's easiest for everybody else
- 4:03or what's on the agenda?
- 4:06It was just what do I want?
- 4:10And that felt unfamiliar.
- 4:13It wasn't hard and it wasn't complicated.
- 4:16Again, just unfamiliar.
- 4:19Because I realized I haven't been practicing that.
- 4:24Because we live in such a reactive society, guys.
- 4:27We're constantly consuming, scrolling, responding, adjusting.
- 4:31So over time, we lose the simple ability to just sit with ourselves and make simple
- 4:39internal decisions.
- 4:42So then when it comes to make bigger decisions, we wonder why we second guess everything.
- 4:49And it's not because we're incapable, but because we're just out of practice listening
- 4:55to ourselves.
- 4:56And I think a lot of us don't need more information, right?
- 5:00We have plenty.
- 5:02We just need more time to practice being with ourselves.
- 5:08And this is something we've even seen in the Bible.
- 5:11In First Kings 19, 11 through 12, it says, the Lord said, go out and stand on the mountain
- 5:16in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.
- 5:21Then a great and powerful wind tore through the mountains apart and shattered the rocks
- 5:25before the Lord.
- 5:26But the Lord was not in the wind.
- 5:28And after the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.
- 5:33And after the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire.
- 5:38And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
- 5:42And I think a lot of us are missing that right there.
- 5:46Not because God isn't speaking, but because our lives are so loud, we would not be able
- 5:52to hear that whisper from God.
- 5:55And I heard a quote once that said, almost everything will work again if you unplug it
- 6:00for a few minutes, including you.
- 6:03So yes, we are like that computer that needs to unplug and shut down and restart.
- 6:09And that is what the cabin gave me.
- 6:11I finally got to unplug long enough to hear myself again.
- 6:17The cabin gave me built-in space with no noise and no constant input.
- 6:24No need to react to my family, okay?
- 6:28And I could finally hear my own thoughts.
- 6:31And I think this is where a lot of us are stuck.
- 6:34Again, not because we don't have answers, but because we don't have the space.
- 6:40And one of the biggest things I journaled while I was there was this.
- 6:46I actually trust myself.
- 6:51Because along the way, I've noticed when I really look at it, my choices are usually
- 6:57pretty wise.
- 6:59And there is a reason I do what I do.
- 7:02So in my journal, I underlined, I can trust myself.
- 7:08And that was huge.
- 7:09But friends, I don't think I would have gotten this in my everyday life.
- 7:14Because I don't always listen to that.
- 7:17Because I'm busy or distracted or talking and taking in everybody's input, right?
- 7:23And I think a lot of us do this.
- 7:25We second-guess ourselves, not because we're incapable, but because we're disconnected
- 7:29from ourselves.
- 7:30Now here's the part I really, really want you to hear.
- 7:35I did not need a cabin to experience that, okay?
- 7:39Y'all don't need to go book a cabin.
- 7:40I mean, I think that's a great experience for you to have, but the cabin isn't why.
- 7:46And it's not the only way to remove the noise.
- 7:50What I actually needed was to start building that space into my everyday life.
- 7:57So instead of waiting for one weekend a year to reset, I started thinking in terms of check-ins.
- 8:04So let's take our first check-in.
- 8:06This is our daily check-in.
- 8:08It's about five minutes.
- 8:10And this is about just asking, what went well today?
- 8:15Did I take care of myself at all?
- 8:17So these are all your needs that you need to do to take care of yourself.
- 8:21And what do I need right now?
- 8:24And this is also where I want you to celebrate any wins that you had that day.
- 8:30Because if you don't pause and acknowledge it, your brain will not count it.
- 8:35Now let's move on to your quarterly check-in.
- 8:38This is where you ask, am I still aligned with my goals?
- 8:41Do I even want what I'm working toward?
- 8:44And when I say, do you want what you're working toward?
- 8:47Sometimes we don't even remember why we started working towards something.
- 8:50We're not even re-choosing it and making sure that's what we want.
- 8:54And also I want you to examine what's working and what is not.
- 8:58So quarterly check-in is going to be about every three months.
- 9:02So this is a really good time to look at all of that.
- 9:06Now the cabin level is going to be your annual reset.
- 9:10This is where you're going to go into that deeper space to reconnect, to unplug, to reflect,
- 9:16to reset your direction for the year.
- 9:19So definitely make sure that you plan these check-ins, okay?
- 9:26And again, you don't need a cabin to find yourself.
- 9:28You need consistent space to hear yourself.
- 9:33That cabin trip didn't give me something new.
- 9:37It reminded me of something I already had, which was clarity, wisdom, and an ability
- 9:44to trust myself.
- 9:46And the goal isn't to wait for one week in a year to feel that, it is to build it into
- 9:51your everyday life.
- 9:54So here's what I want you to do today.
- 9:56You're going to take five minutes, no phone, no noise, okay?
- 10:01And just ask yourself, what do I actually need right now?
- 10:05So this is what you're going to do today.
- 10:08So guys, please take advantage of those three check-ins, the daily, the quarterly, and the
- 10:14annual.
- 10:15I think it will be very life-changing and it will allow you to hear yourself think and
- 10:22for you to hear what God has to say to you.
- 10:25So I want to take this moment to give a special shout-out to my son, William Grimes, who is
- 10:31the editor and producer of this podcast, Behind the Scenes, bringing this podcast to you twice
- 10:38a week.
