- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities CE OS and even royalty Adam Cox, these
- 0:21recordings took place live from Evans Clinic in London's world
- 0:24famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here, and you're about to listen to a sleep
- 0:43hypnosis session with A twist. Because it's not just about
- 0:48getting to sleep. It's about finding a way to
- 0:52train your brain to change how it thinks about anxiety.
- 0:57Because anxiety quite often is an anticipatory response to
- 1:03mitigate risk. Not about what will happen, but
- 1:06what could happen. And it's a form of your brain
- 1:10trying to keep you safe by thinking of everything that
- 1:13could go wrong and trying to solve that problem before it
- 1:17happens. And there is a plus side to that
- 1:20in the sense that if you can mitigate risks, if you can
- 1:23prepare or, you know, find some way of making a different
- 1:27choice, then it's actually helpful.
- 1:28But in many cases, the feeling that you get by anticipating the
- 1:32future actually. Creates a horrible.
- 1:34State where it's trying to solve problems that are unsolvable
- 1:38because you're not in that situation yet.
- 1:40So one of the ways of dealing with anxiety is to have the
- 1:43belief system that you can handle whatever life throws at
- 1:46you. A lot of people that feel
- 1:48anxious about one thing don't feel anxious about lots of other
- 1:52things. So if someone is afraid, for
- 1:55example, of embarrassing themself in public, they might
- 1:58think a lot about social situations, but they might not
- 2:02get worried at all about driving.
- 2:04And I've worked with other people that get really anxious
- 2:06about driving and are completely fine in social situations.
- 2:10So this is designed to help change how you think about
- 2:13anxiety to become more resilient.
- 2:16And resilient is that you've got the resources to either manage
- 2:20or improve or handle whatever the situation is.
- 2:24But it's all linked into this sleep hypnosis session.
- 2:27So if you like. The idea of.
- 2:30Getting to sleep and waking up more resilient with less anxiety
- 2:33tomorrow. You might get some benefit from
- 2:36this session. And if you're curious about
- 2:38working with me directly, have a look in the show notes and
- 2:42you'll see lots of resources and ways to work with me directly.
- 2:45For now, though, find a quiet, comfortable place where you
- 2:49won't be distracted or disturbed.
- 2:51Relax and enjoy the session. Take a deep.
- 3:16Breath in, and as you breathe in, imagine breathing in.
- 3:24A calming, soothing sensation. And as you breathe.
- 3:31Out. Imagine releasing feelings of
- 3:37worry, pessimism, all trepidation.
- 3:46Not all of it all at once, but just small amounts on every
- 3:52outward breath. And if optimism had a colour,
- 4:00what would it be? And just imagine breathing in
- 4:06colour of optimism. And here's the interesting
- 4:12thing. Optimism is just a general
- 4:16belief that things will be fine, and pessimism is a belief that
- 4:25things won't be fine. But if you were to believe them
- 4:31anyway, isn't it better to be optimistic that things will be
- 4:37fine and deal with things If they're not, then have all of
- 4:44the worries and anxiety and stress of thinking that things
- 4:49won't be fine. And then if they're not and
- 4:54you're wrong, you've experienced all of that stress and worry for
- 5:00nothing. So as you breathe in that
- 5:04optimism, give permission to release the part of you that is
- 5:12trying to keep you safe by being pessimistic.
- 5:17It has a lovely intention to be vigilant, to protect, to manage
- 5:26your expectations, and to not let other people down.
- 5:33But as you breathe in the optimism, you realize you can
- 5:38keep yourself safe without needing to prepare or think of
- 5:46the worst. And as you breathe in that
- 5:52optimism, you start to figure out why.
- 5:56What if by being optimistic, you experience less stress, less
- 6:03anxiety, and less worries? Cortisol is the hormone of
- 6:12stress and adrenaline is the hormone of anxiety, neither of
- 6:19which are good for sleeping. So with that optimism, you have
- 6:27less stress and less anxiety, which means less cortisol and
- 6:35less adrenaline and more of those relaxing hormones like
- 6:41oxytocin and serotonin. And what if as a result of
- 6:48those, you end up sleeping better?
- 6:54And not just length of time, but quality of sleep.
- 7:00And what if because you sleep better, you've got more energy,
- 7:06more alertness? What if that keeps you safe much
- 7:13more than worrying ever would? Because worrying is like
- 7:21fighting shadows. You never win that battle.
- 7:27Optimism is assuming things will be fine and allowing yourself to
- 7:34have the resources to deal with real problems, not imaginary
- 7:40ones. So as you breathe in and breathe
- 7:46out, I want you to imagine seeing yourself on a beach in
- 7:53Bermuda. You're not in your own body, but
- 7:58I want you to see a worried, stressed version of you.
- 8:07And perhaps that version of you had a thought even for just a
- 8:13second, because of all that worry and stress.
- 8:18They may have said to themself, I shouldn't be here.
- 8:23It's not right. And yet that wasn't true.
- 8:31They should be there and it was right?
- 8:37It was a false alarm. And how many false alarms has to
- 8:42happen before you stop believing the alarms?
- 8:52I want you to rewind that whole Bermuda trip and imagine what
- 8:58you would have looked like being optimistic, calm and confident.
- 9:11Just because you don't worry doesn't mean you don't care.
- 9:15That version of you could still have called back home and
- 9:20checked. Some people think that worry
- 9:24means love. Worry means care.
- 9:28It doesn't Worry just means stress and anxiety.
- 9:35And I want you to see that version of you that I was there
- 9:39in Bermuda without any stress and worries at all.
- 9:45That version of you had permission to just enjoy
- 9:48yourself. And so you do.
- 9:55And I want you to imagine that version of you learns a
- 10:00different belief. You have permission to feel OK,
- 10:11to feel positive, to deal with real problems, not imaginary
- 10:17ones. And what you can imagine that
- 10:20version of you in Bermuda, actually enjoying yourself
- 10:25without worry? Let me know by nodding your head
- 10:33and I want you to see that version of you having a
- 10:37wonderful night's sleep. Perhaps you remember the hotel
- 10:43or the bed you were sleeping in. But instead of restless nights,
- 10:47I want you to imagine deep, high quality, rejuvenating sleep and
- 10:56then rewind it just before you drifted off to sleep.
- 11:00And then float into that version of you feel what it would feel
- 11:06like to be away, enjoying yourself and having amazing
- 11:14sleep. Perhaps the best night's sleep
- 11:18you've ever had. And I want you to bring forth a
- 11:24voice inside your head. The voice that's been saying you
- 11:32won't be able to sleep, things will go wrong, you're going to
- 11:38be tired, you won't be able to do it.
- 11:43But this time, whenever you hear that, just secretly smile to
- 11:50yourself. And each time they tell you that
- 11:54something's going to go wrong, just think to yourself, let's
- 12:02see. And maybe you could say we'll
- 12:10see, so that all parts of your unconscious get to make the same
- 12:15evaluation. And perhaps you could imagine
- 12:19that the tone of voice of this pessimistic part has the kind of
- 12:26tonality that isn't believable. Maybe every time they say
- 12:32something, it sounds like a question.
- 12:37You're not going to sleep well. You won't be able to do it.
- 12:45You'll spoil everything. It doesn't sound like a
- 12:51premonition. It sounds doubtful.
- 12:59And when you respond with, well, let's see, Notice how difficult
- 13:04it is for anxiety to arrive. So as you drift off into a deep
- 13:10sleep, I want you to imagine having a dream about a future.
- 13:18I want you to imagine seeing yourself like you're someone
- 13:20else. Imagine you've got a
- 13:23presentation to a school assembly, and imagine it's the
- 13:26night before. You know what you're going to be
- 13:29talking about. And imagine that that version of
- 13:32you is relaxed, calm, sleeps well, wakes up energized and
- 13:40excited. And see that version of you more
- 13:45resourceful than you normally are because you have more
- 13:49energy, more clarity, more resources.
- 13:57Imagine yourself presenting to a big group of teenagers and
- 14:01actually enjoying it, feeling that you get to do that rather
- 14:07than have to do that. And you could imagine that it
- 14:15happens again and again. Each time you enjoy it more and
- 14:18more, and each time you sleep better than night before, until
- 14:24one day it dawns on you. This doesn't faze you at all.
- 14:34Maybe you dream about being invited away, Social gatherings,
- 14:41gatherings with friends or family members while you're
- 14:44sleeping outside of your normal bed.
- 14:48And again, imagine that version of you excited about those
- 14:53invitations. You say yes before any thoughts
- 15:01can pop into your head. If any thoughts pop into your
- 15:05head, make them doubtful and just think.
- 15:08Let's see, you've got a feeling that everything will be fine.
- 15:13And we can call that feeling optimism.
- 15:18Imagine what it would feel like to sleep well in the evenings
- 15:22before you go. And when you go out there,
- 15:28imagine your brain wants to have the best night's sleep ever,
- 15:34just to prove to you that you can.
- 15:41Why doesn't a child look at the monster under its bed?
- 15:45That scares them because they don't want to see a monster.
- 15:51But every time they don't look, the monster gets bigger, and all
- 15:56they have to do is find the courage to look once, and then
- 16:02they know the monster was never there.
- 16:06And I want you to think that more than 99% of your warriors
- 16:12and anxieties are imaginary monsters, and the moment you act
- 16:19like they're not real, they disappear.
- 16:24Fear are like shadows, Action decisions are like light.
- 16:30And every time you decide and act like they're not real, the
- 16:37shadows disappear. And I wonder how many times you
- 16:43have to call the bluff of these shadowy monsters before you come
- 16:49to the conclusion that they're not real.
- 16:55Maybe it's just three or four times you look under the bed and
- 16:58see there's no monster. To realize there never was.
- 17:07Imagine you're now back in your bed, no longer in Bermuda, head
- 17:16on a pillow. And just imagine that very soon
- 17:21I will count from 1:00 to 10:00. And if you're listening to this
- 17:26at a time when you want to awaken with alertness, that when
- 17:31I count from 1:00 to 10:00, you will awaken with alertness.
- 17:37But if you happen to be listening to this in bed, head
- 17:40on a pillow with a desire to sleep, well, then when I count
- 17:46from 1:00 to 10:00, you will drift off into a wonderful deep
- 17:51sleep and awaken at exactly the time that is suitable for
- 17:59awakening. And perhaps that's the very next
- 18:04morning, perhaps just a minute or even seconds before you would
- 18:13normally wake up due to an alarm or something else.
- 18:18Isn't it wonderful how the mind works?
- 18:23Starting to count 123, 456789 and 10.
