- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on Them, the podcast for
- 1:01Speaker 2: millennials who want financial freedom. Welcome back to another one
- 1:04Speaker 2: of our money diaries where I get the absolute pleasure
- 1:07Speaker 2: of talking to one of our beautiful She's on the
- 1:09Speaker 2: Money community members all about their journey. Let's jump straight
- 1:13Speaker 2: into it, because this week I got a message and
- 1:16Speaker 2: it went like this, Hello, beautiful, She's on the Money team.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I'm a thirty one year old recovered methanphetamine drug addict.
- 1:24Speaker 2: April twenty twenty three was my five year clean sobriety,
- 1:28Speaker 2: and I couldn't be more proud of how far I
- 1:31Speaker 2: have come. I was heavily addicted for several years until
- 1:34Speaker 2: I accidentally felt pregnant, which switched my mindset instantaneously, and
- 1:39Speaker 2: I haven't touched or craved for any substance since ever
- 1:43Speaker 2: since falling pregnant. I also have changed my money story,
- 1:46Speaker 2: aiming to set us both up for a safe and
- 1:48Speaker 2: comfortable life. I'm a single mum, so I didn't start
- 1:51Speaker 2: working until August late last year in twenty twenty two.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I've only been living off cent link up until then.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Since listening to She's on the Money, I have accomplished
- 2:00Speaker 2: so much and I would love to share my story
- 2:02Speaker 2: with you Money Diarist. I feel like this is going
- 2:05Speaker 2: to be such a good and such inspirational story. Thank
- 2:09Speaker 2: you for joining us.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I already know it's going to be good because we
- 2:14Speaker 2: had such good boun to off air, so I'm ready
- 2:16Speaker 2: to bring that on air. At the start of every
- 2:18Speaker 2: money diary, I like to ask the same question, so
- 2:21Speaker 2: let's start their money Diarist. If I asked you to
- 2:24Speaker 2: give your money habits a grade from A through to F,
- 2:26Speaker 2: what would you grade your habits today.
- 2:28Speaker 4: I would give myself a B a B.
- 2:30Speaker 2: I love it all right. My favorite question, let's dive
- 2:33Speaker 2: into it, money diarist. I want to know can you
- 2:35Speaker 2: tell us a little bit more about your money story.
- 2:38Speaker 4: So my mum was a single mother of five. I
- 2:41Speaker 4: was the baby, so things were a little dismal, but
- 2:44Speaker 4: we never went without the essentials. I remember my mum
- 2:48Speaker 4: working longer hours than most parents, agnol, felt like she
- 2:51Speaker 4: was never there. I did attend a private school, however,
- 2:54Speaker 4: the costs were covered by settling.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Oh cool, Yeah, that was good. MAM's a hustler.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:01Speaker 4: She did end up meeting my stepdad when I was
- 3:03Speaker 4: around nine, and the older siblings moved out, so things
- 3:06Speaker 4: got a little lighter. However, we still seem to be
- 3:09Speaker 4: living paycheck to paycheck. We never did talk about finances
- 3:13Speaker 4: or money, just the occasional. I can't afford that, sorry, honey.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Never ate out. We never went on holidays, but we
- 3:20Speaker 4: did go camping and that was a blast.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Oh, I love that.
- 3:24Speaker 4: When I was thirteen, I ended up working for the
- 3:26Speaker 4: farmer across the road, milking cows at four am.
- 3:29Speaker 2: At four am. Oh my gosh, no chance, absolutely no
- 3:33Speaker 2: chance for me.
- 3:34Speaker 4: It was tough. I wasn't paid in cash though I
- 3:37Speaker 4: was paid in livestock.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Oh very cool.
- 3:40Speaker 4: I had another job at waitressing when I was around
- 3:42Speaker 4: fifteen to sixteen, and when I was nineteen, I saved
- 3:45Speaker 4: enough money to be able to go to Canada by
- 3:47Speaker 4: myself for three months.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:50Speaker 4: See, things were looking quite bright for me until I
- 3:52Speaker 4: found myself in trouble around the age of twenty one
- 3:55Speaker 4: twenty two, dabbling in drugs and then unfortunately becoming very
- 4:00Speaker 4: highly addicted. My value doesn't drive for anything changed dramatically.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. Can you tell me a bit more
- 4:06Speaker 2: about what that gateway was like, because obviously, going from
- 4:10Speaker 2: you know, the short money story we've heard of, like yep,
- 4:13Speaker 2: I was getting up for him milking the cows, I
- 4:15Speaker 2: was getting paid in livestock all the way through to
- 4:18Speaker 2: look twenty one twenty two, I got mixed up in
- 4:21Speaker 2: some stuff that you know, I'm sure you wish you didn't,
- 4:24Speaker 2: But how did that happen? Was it the people that
- 4:26Speaker 2: were surrounding you? Was it something you sought out? Was it,
- 4:29Speaker 2: you know, working in a particular wait trusting job like
- 4:31Speaker 2: tell us a little bit more about that It was.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Actually my family, so I was around it for two
- 4:37Speaker 4: years before I actually tried it. I went into the
- 4:42Speaker 4: wrong pathway from family influence. I think they all feel
- 4:46Speaker 4: pretty bad about that, but we were all in a
- 4:48Speaker 4: bad situation and we're thankfully all of us out of
- 4:51Speaker 4: that now too.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Love love to hear that.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Yeah for us, but yeah, So it was the wrong
- 4:58Speaker 4: pathway to go down, and I happened to get into
- 5:00Speaker 4: the wrong place, wrong time, family, and we're all looking
- 5:05Speaker 4: up now.
- 5:05Speaker 2: So what did that look like when it came to
- 5:08Speaker 2: I guess your money story. Obviously, when you're purchasing substances
- 5:13Speaker 2: like that, they're not cheap. How did you fund that?
- 5:15Speaker 2: What did that look like?
- 5:16Speaker 4: So there's like friends or friends, You've got different platforms
- 5:21Speaker 4: where you can find it, and people just want to
- 5:23Speaker 4: hang out with you and supply the drugs. Majority of
- 5:26Speaker 4: those are men. Unfortunately, yep, I had a sugar daddy too,
- 5:32Speaker 4: so he.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Was This is going to be the spiciest money story.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I cannot wait to dissect this. Even more so.
- 5:39Speaker 4: He was involved in the drug game too. I just
- 5:42Speaker 4: loved to spend time with young females and supplying as
- 5:46Speaker 4: much drugs as he could. He was pretty well off.
- 5:49Speaker 4: So yeah, it was basically it was easy to get
- 5:51Speaker 4: a hold of.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Because you just asked him in it would be straight
- 5:54Speaker 2: into your pocket. I suppose definitely. Yeah, how did you
- 5:58Speaker 2: get introduced to? I guess those people, because it goes
- 6:01Speaker 2: above and beyond being in a situation where you're like, look,
- 6:04Speaker 2: family introduced me. They were doing it and you know,
- 6:06Speaker 2: tried it a few times and kept getting it to
- 6:08Speaker 2: going all right, well, I'm going to get a sugar daddy.
- 6:11Speaker 2: And I mean that's a fair choice as long as
- 6:14Speaker 2: everybody in that circumstance is consenting. Like who am I
- 6:17Speaker 2: to judge? But I look at it and go all right, well,
- 6:20Speaker 2: how did you decide that was for you? And how
- 6:22Speaker 2: did you get out of it? Importantly?
- 6:25Speaker 4: Yeah, so I wasn't looking for a sugar daddy. It
- 6:28Speaker 4: didn't happen like that. It just happened to be one
- 6:31Speaker 4: of my friends. Well, people that I was hanging out
- 6:33Speaker 4: with that we did drugs with. They were hanging out
- 6:36Speaker 4: with this older guy and he supplied everything to them
- 6:40Speaker 4: and you know, bought them fancy things and stuff, and
- 6:43Speaker 4: then it was just bringing your friends and I was
- 6:46Speaker 4: one of those, And yeah, it just went from there.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Makes a lot of sense, though, because if you're like
- 6:51Speaker 2: this guy gives me exactly what I'm looking for, it
- 6:53Speaker 2: becomes very easy.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Yeah, it did, and it was probably too much, to
- 6:58Speaker 4: be honest, So yeah, where it went downhill too easily
- 7:03Speaker 4: accessible for me, and it was a three, four times
- 7:07Speaker 4: a day sort of usage that got out of hand.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. And then in your letter into us,
- 7:14Speaker 2: you said I felt pregnant and instantaneously I cut it.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I didn't crave it, I don't use the substance. I'm
- 7:21Speaker 2: not interested in it. How did that change you? Because
- 7:24Speaker 2: obviously that's not a situation that everyone finds themselves in.
- 7:28Speaker 2: I wish it was, because obviously that would be a
- 7:30Speaker 2: really beautiful outcome for absolutely everybody and their babies in
- 7:34Speaker 2: that circumstance. But how did you make that switch? Because
- 7:38Speaker 2: you know, the drug we're talking about is incredibly addictive,
- 7:42Speaker 2: and that can't have been a very nice process to
- 7:45Speaker 2: have gone through.
- 7:46Speaker 4: I was around it for a while, and I had
- 7:48Speaker 4: a lot of friends that had a lot of kids
- 7:50Speaker 4: as well, and I just remember looking back and thinking,
- 7:53Speaker 4: I do not want to bring a child into this world.
- 7:57Speaker 4: And I was adamant about that. When I found out
- 8:01Speaker 4: I was pregnant, I actually had drugs on me. I
- 8:04Speaker 4: was about to you know, consume them, and someone was like,
- 8:09Speaker 4: you might be pregnant because I was like two weeks late,
- 8:11Speaker 4: and I was like, nah, you're not possible. I ended
- 8:13Speaker 4: up going down to the pharmacy coming back and I
- 8:17Speaker 4: was pregnant. Yeah. I was blown away through those drugs
- 8:22Speaker 4: to my friends and have never looked back.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I'm so proud of you. That's such
- 8:29Speaker 2: a big decision because it would have been such an
- 8:31Speaker 2: awful like withdrawal process, and like, you know, I know
- 8:35Speaker 2: that you said you haven't craved them or wanted to
- 8:37Speaker 2: do that, but like your body would have been going, hey,
- 8:40Speaker 2: where's this stuff that I'm so dependent on? How did
- 8:44Speaker 2: you do that? I'm so intrigued because it's such a
- 8:46Speaker 2: powerful story.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Yeah. So I went to my doctor, told them the
- 8:52Speaker 4: drug usage that I was doing, how much I was consuming,
- 8:55Speaker 4: that i'd fallen pregnant, and that I wanted to, you know,
- 9:00Speaker 4: do as much as I can to get us both
- 9:01Speaker 4: healthy and good. So basically I moved back down to
- 9:05Speaker 4: my hometown and with my mum, went into hibernation and
- 9:09Speaker 4: all I did was eat and sleep more than I
- 9:12Speaker 4: ever have before.
- 9:14Speaker 2: I mean, pregnancy sometimes does do that to you too,
- 9:17Speaker 2: so it might have been a mix of all of it.
- 9:18Speaker 2: My friends. Yeah, I want to know a bit more
- 9:21Speaker 2: about your money story because you're now thirty one, so
- 9:24Speaker 2: that was back when you were twenty one twenty two,
- 9:26Speaker 2: and obviously times have changed. You have a beautiful baby
- 9:29Speaker 2: now or a beautiful toddler. Now, tell me a bit
- 9:32Speaker 2: more about life today. What does it look like.
- 9:36Speaker 4: Gosh, she is a little ray of some chum, but
- 9:39Speaker 4: she has a hell of a lot of attitude.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Yeah, the best way to be. I love her already.
- 9:45Speaker 4: We're good. So we have daycare and Kindy So she's
- 9:48Speaker 4: at Kindy now, which is cute and swimming lessons. Life
- 9:53Speaker 4: is so fulfilling, like having a child just makes life
- 9:57Speaker 4: so much better. There's so much more value and meaning
- 10:01Speaker 4: and it's just a rainbow every day basically apart from
- 10:05Speaker 4: the attitude and sassiness.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Now that makes it even better. No, I love it.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Yeah, it's good. Life is amazing, all right.
- 10:13Speaker 2: I want to know now. You mentioned before that you
- 10:16Speaker 2: didn't start working until August last year. What do you
- 10:19Speaker 2: do for work now? How much money do you warn?
- 10:22Speaker 4: I do admin, payroll and account support, so I do
- 10:26Speaker 4: twenty five hours a week with a forty five minute
- 10:28Speaker 4: drive each way. Oh my gosh, I'm on forty four
- 10:32Speaker 4: thousand a year plus super. But I don't claim the
- 10:35Speaker 4: tax free threshold, so I get about thirty three in
- 10:38Speaker 4: my bank. But in saying that, I still get settlink.
- 10:41Speaker 4: I receive single parenting payment yep, family tax benefits, which
- 10:45Speaker 4: is about seventeen thousand a year. And then I also
- 10:49Speaker 4: have a sidehouse on the weekend.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, of course you do.
- 10:52Speaker 1: What is that?
- 10:53Speaker 4: I set up like play for kids' parties and I
- 10:57Speaker 4: stare it, so it's another company that owns it, and
- 10:59Speaker 4: I'm just a trade off of that, which is pretty
- 11:02Speaker 4: good because my daughter can come with me and she
- 11:04Speaker 4: helps me set up.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. And you'd love it too, because you'd
- 11:06Speaker 2: be like, oh, we're setting up basically a park for
- 11:09Speaker 2: all of these little babies.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Yeah, there's like a bullpit and stuff, and she'll just
- 11:13Speaker 4: like get in there.
- 11:14Speaker 2: She's got to test it. She's quality control.
- 11:18Speaker 4: She does pretty good.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I love that so much. So what
- 11:21Speaker 2: does the side hustle bring in each year.
- 11:23Speaker 4: About five over five thousand.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Oh that's good cash for a few things that you
- 11:28Speaker 2: get up to on the weekend.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Though it doesn't take up much for my time, so
- 11:32Speaker 4: it's good and it's good that she can come with me.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Works well, where does your work life balance come into that?
- 11:37Speaker 2: You've mentioned you've got a young child there in daycare
- 11:41Speaker 2: and kinder You, you know, are driving forty five minutes
- 11:44Speaker 2: each week from work. You're doing side hustles on the weekend.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Do you have a personal life? Are you like dating?
- 11:49Speaker 2: What's going on there?
- 11:50Speaker 4: I'm in an actual polyamory relationship.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Okay, didn't see that coming.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Yeah, so have a girlfriend, she has a partner, yep,
- 11:58Speaker 4: and I can if I like to, but not really
- 12:01Speaker 4: interested in it. We've been together nearly two years now.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Oh very cool. Can I be real pervy and ask
- 12:07Speaker 2: about how the dynamics of that work? What does that
- 12:10Speaker 2: actually look like? So, if your girlfriend has a partner,
- 12:13Speaker 2: do they live full time together? Like, how do you interact?
- 12:16Speaker 2: What does that look like?
- 12:18Speaker 4: She has a primary other, they live together, they're engaged.
- 12:22Speaker 4: But we all get along really well. It was a
- 12:24Speaker 4: bumpy at the start. I go up to their house
- 12:26Speaker 4: and I stay all the time and my daughter stays
- 12:28Speaker 4: in their spare room. We get along really good. It
- 12:31Speaker 4: works really well.
- 12:33Speaker 2: How good. Tell me about the financial side of it, though?
- 12:36Speaker 2: How do you split it three ways?
- 12:38Speaker 1: Like?
- 12:38Speaker 2: Is it them paying more because you're the single kind
- 12:41Speaker 2: of in this relationship or what does that look like?
- 12:44Speaker 4: All of our finances are separate, so they don't share finances.
- 12:48Speaker 4: I don't share finances. However, her male partner is a chef.
- 12:53Speaker 2: This is a good deal for everybody involved.
- 12:56Speaker 4: He gets fresh produced too, from one of his suppliers. Weekly.
- 13:00Speaker 4: He brings me a box of goodies. Oh my gosh, yeah,
- 13:04Speaker 4: this reduces my grocery bills, like dramatically.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Adore this whole polyamory thing, Like you're selling me on it.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Can you tell me what long term looks like? Obviously
- 13:13Speaker 2: they're engaged, they're planning on I'm assuming getting married at
- 13:17Speaker 2: some point. Will you stick around for that whole picture?
- 13:20Speaker 2: Will this become like a you guys move in together?
- 13:23Speaker 2: Like I don't know what does that look like?
- 13:24Speaker 4: Oh gosh, that's a good question.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Sorry, Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself, but I'm like,
- 13:28Speaker 2: what does this look like?
- 13:30Speaker 4: We actually haven't really talked about that. They've kind of
- 13:34Speaker 4: hold on the marriage at the moment. So I came
- 13:37Speaker 4: into it when they got engaged. Yeah, and I was
- 13:39Speaker 4: just a friend. It wasn't like a relationship we were
- 13:42Speaker 4: looking for in the polyamory, you know, we weren't looking
- 13:45Speaker 4: for this type of relationship. She was a friend. I
- 13:47Speaker 4: fell in love with her, She fell in love with me.
- 13:49Speaker 4: She had to talk to her partner before she confronted
- 13:52Speaker 4: to me, so they had a talk and then she
- 13:54Speaker 4: came to me, and then we all had a discussion together,
- 13:57Speaker 4: and it's just bloomed from there. They have really halted
- 14:00Speaker 4: their marriage because of me. They just halted it because
- 14:03Speaker 4: of other circumstances too. I think they are on the
- 14:07Speaker 4: horizon of getting back into it, but for now, I
- 14:10Speaker 4: think we're just working out what the future holds for us.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Was this your first polyamorous relationship?
- 14:18Speaker 4: Oh yes, I didn't even really know it was a thing.
- 14:20Speaker 2: How did that work? Were you like, oh my gosh,
- 14:22Speaker 2: what do you mean? Can I, you know, date you
- 14:25Speaker 2: at the same time? Like, as you said before, you
- 14:28Speaker 2: were like it was a bit rocky at the start.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Was that because you just hadn't done it before or
- 14:32Speaker 2: didn't know I guess the boundaries and what that looked like.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Tell me a bit more about that, because I just
- 14:36Speaker 2: look at it and go, I don't even know how
- 14:38Speaker 2: this would come up.
- 14:41Speaker 4: None of us really knew what we were doing. There
- 14:43Speaker 4: was a lot of jealousy involved, like a lot of
- 14:45Speaker 4: jealousy not just from my part, but her male partner's
- 14:49Speaker 4: part as well. It was on a rollercoaster for him
- 14:51Speaker 4: with his emotions. He didn't know how he felt. Sometimes
- 14:54Speaker 4: other times he was okay, and then other times he
- 14:57Speaker 4: was like, no, can we stop. So it was very bumpy,
- 15:00Speaker 4: But in the end we have like boot amazing. Now
- 15:04Speaker 4: it's gotten to a point where we all sit on
- 15:06Speaker 4: the couch and watch movies or like I actually stay
- 15:09Speaker 4: at their house and it's him, her and me. We're
- 15:12Speaker 4: all just in the bed together, just casually, fine, casual.
- 15:16Speaker 2: I'm so pervy on it, just because I'm like, I
- 15:18Speaker 2: don't know how this would work, because obviously he wasn't
- 15:20Speaker 2: as on board at the start. Does that mean you're
- 15:23Speaker 2: sort of in a relationship with him as well, or
- 15:25Speaker 2: is it definitely just the two of the girls and
- 15:27Speaker 2: he's just like, yeah, she can sleep over and sleep
- 15:30Speaker 2: in the bed, But like, I'm not part of this,
- 15:32Speaker 2: but like, is he part of that? I guess relationship dynamic.
- 15:36Speaker 4: So there is no sexual like areas between him and I,
- 15:41Speaker 4: but there is a more care factor there and a
- 15:44Speaker 4: more like.
- 15:44Speaker 2: That's what I was like, because he's bringing you like
- 15:46Speaker 2: fruit and veggie boxes and like looking after you in
- 15:49Speaker 2: the way that a partner might. I'm like, I didn't
- 15:51Speaker 2: expect that from somebody who kind of wasn't the dating partner.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Yeah, it seems a bit different from everyone else's point.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Of so it sounds beautiful. It sounds like, I don't
- 16:01Speaker 2: know how to explain this. You're talking about them, and
- 16:04Speaker 2: you are beaming, like you are quite clearly so happy
- 16:08Speaker 2: about this situation, and I'm sure that they talk about
- 16:11Speaker 2: you in exactly the same way. So like, I just
- 16:13Speaker 2: love that you're so happy in this. Like, I don't
- 16:16Speaker 2: think it matters that it's different, Like everybody's relationship in
- 16:19Speaker 2: some way, shape or form, is different. It doesn't actually
- 16:22Speaker 2: matter as long as everybody in the relationship is like
- 16:25Speaker 2: happy about it, right of.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Course, yeah, and everyone is just family members might not be.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Oh, is that an issue because there's like a lack
- 16:34Speaker 2: of clarity or they just don't get it.
- 16:37Speaker 4: I don't think they get it.
- 16:39Speaker 2: No, I can't believe that because I just feel like
- 16:42Speaker 2: if my kid came home and was like, I have
- 16:44Speaker 2: a girlfriend who has a partner, I'd be like, does
- 16:47Speaker 2: everybody know? Yep? Okay, well that's not my place to judge. Like,
- 16:52Speaker 2: you're happy, great, no worries, all the jops you it's
- 16:54Speaker 2: all good. Let's get back on track. Though. I want
- 16:57Speaker 2: to know what are you currently working towards? What is
- 16:59Speaker 2: your big goal?
- 17:00Speaker 4: Okay, so one of them was I'm going on a
- 17:04Speaker 4: cruise to New Zealand with my girlfriend, just us, not
- 17:08Speaker 4: the other partner. Yeah, but I've already paid that off
- 17:11Speaker 4: with winner. Yeah, so I just need spending money.
- 17:14Speaker 2: When is that happening? Is it soon?
- 17:16Speaker 1: Like?
- 17:16Speaker 2: How long have we got for spending money?
- 17:18Speaker 4: March next year?
- 17:18Speaker 2: So oh you've got heaps of time?
- 17:20Speaker 4: Yeah? How long for it's eleven days?
- 17:23Speaker 2: Very nice.
- 17:25Speaker 4: We're going to Sydney first for a couple of days,
- 17:27Speaker 4: and then Newcastle because she grew up there, so.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Oh how fun? And then what after that? You've got
- 17:32Speaker 2: this big cruise working towards that? Is there any other
- 17:35Speaker 2: big money goals that you're working towards just to be comfortable.
- 17:38Speaker 4: Really, yes, I just want to be financially stable. Yeah.
- 17:41Speaker 4: A goal of mine used to be the Australian drink
- 17:44Speaker 4: to own home, and I thought a two percent deposit
- 17:47Speaker 4: for a single mum seemed achievable. But after listening to
- 17:51Speaker 4: your podcast and you know, finding out the nitty gritty
- 17:54Speaker 4: stuff and everything that else comes with it, I just
- 17:56Speaker 4: realized that, well, it's not for me, it's not what
- 17:58Speaker 4: I want, doesn't align my values anymore.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Oh.
- 18:01Speaker 2: I love that. I love that you're clear on that.
- 18:03Speaker 2: It doesn't mean it won't change in the future if
- 18:05Speaker 2: you end up in a you know, more stable financial situation,
- 18:08Speaker 2: but I kind of love that it's not putting pressure
- 18:11Speaker 2: on you at the moment.
- 18:12Speaker 4: It feels good not to feel that pressure.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Love.
- 18:15Speaker 2: All right, let's go to a really quick break because
- 18:16Speaker 2: I have approximately one million questions for you right after
- 18:19Speaker 2: this all right, money direst We are back, and I
- 18:27Speaker 2: feel like this has thrown a few I don't want
- 18:29Speaker 2: to say spanners in the works, but like there's been
- 18:31Speaker 2: some curveballs that I didn't see coming in this money story.
- 18:34Speaker 2: I want to know now obviously you have gone from
- 18:37Speaker 2: you know, not being in a good financial position to
- 18:39Speaker 2: being I would say in a great one, do you
- 18:42Speaker 2: have any investments? If so, what are they? If you don't,
- 18:45Speaker 2: why not?
- 18:46Speaker 4: So I salary sacrifice one hundred dollars a week into
- 18:49Speaker 4: my super because when I was in trouble, I obviously
- 18:53Speaker 4: didn't have a job, so my super is reasonably low
- 18:56Speaker 4: at the moment. I've also set up a raise account
- 18:59Speaker 4: and I do your thirty five dollars automatic transfer weekly
- 19:03Speaker 4: and offer that I have a kid's account as well. Yeah,
- 19:06Speaker 4: ten dollars weekly. So oh, I'm wanting to set up
- 19:10Speaker 4: a good portfolio, though, I just need to educate myself
- 19:13Speaker 4: a little bit better.
- 19:14Speaker 2: And I feel like you're well on the way to that,
- 19:16Speaker 2: especially knowing how much you earn per year. But then
- 19:19Speaker 2: you're also prioritizing investing. This is so sexy. I love it.
- 19:23Speaker 2: I want to know a bit more about your daughter,
- 19:25Speaker 2: though you mentioned her earlier, and then you just said
- 19:27Speaker 2: you have like a kid's investment portfolio that you're investing into.
- 19:31Speaker 2: How do you discuss money with your daughter?
- 19:33Speaker 4: That one's hard. So she's very young. I feel like
- 19:36Speaker 4: she was very young anyway, She's still my baby, so
- 19:39Speaker 4: I think the only way for me to do that
- 19:41Speaker 4: at the moment is like, she gets birthday money and stuff,
- 19:44Speaker 4: so we'll go out to the shops and we'll show
- 19:47Speaker 4: what she can get with that money and show her
- 19:49Speaker 4: what she can't. But that's it at the moment. I
- 19:52Speaker 4: think when she gets a bit older, I will encourage
- 19:55Speaker 4: her to do food shopping with me, and I'll encourage
- 19:58Speaker 4: her to do chores in order to get money and
- 20:01Speaker 4: say love.
- 20:02Speaker 2: I feel like when they're so young, it's very hard,
- 20:05Speaker 2: but I like how open you are to like understanding
- 20:08Speaker 2: what it looks like for her age and what that
- 20:11Speaker 2: looks like into the future. I always like asking about
- 20:13Speaker 2: it because I have no idea exactly how I'm going
- 20:16Speaker 2: to talk to my kids about money, like none, because
- 20:18Speaker 2: they're all so different as well, like one kid, as
- 20:21Speaker 2: you were saying, your daughter incredibly sassy. Maybe it just
- 20:24Speaker 2: won't fall in the same way it does with other kids.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly, All right.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Next question I have my friend, Do you have any debts?
- 20:31Speaker 2: If so, what are they and what are they for?
- 20:34Speaker 4: Okay, so I have about one thousand dollars left on
- 20:37Speaker 4: my debt. It's not your usual debt that you hear
- 20:40Speaker 4: on cheese on the money. I'm actually paying off court
- 20:42Speaker 4: fines and infringements from back in the day. So that
- 20:46Speaker 4: was a total of about twenty five thousand dollars.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, and you've paid nearly all of it off. Yeah,
- 20:52Speaker 2: queen behavior, I love this. I love this so much.
- 20:55Speaker 2: How long do you think it'll be before that is
- 20:57Speaker 2: completely extinguished?
- 20:59Speaker 4: It will be gone by the start of next year,
- 21:01Speaker 4: about January.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. I love this. And how will you
- 21:04Speaker 2: feel once all of that is gone? Do you feel
- 21:06Speaker 2: like that's going to be like, I guess, another line
- 21:08Speaker 2: in the sand for a life that once was.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Yes, for sure, it's the last line in the sand
- 21:14Speaker 4: of life that once was.
- 21:15Speaker 2: It's the only thing that lingers you, Like, get out,
- 21:17Speaker 2: I'm done here. I can't be bothered with this. Oh
- 21:20Speaker 2: that'll be so exciting. How are you going to celebrate?
- 21:22Speaker 2: Oh gosh, I haven't thought that you have to celebrate?
- 21:25Speaker 4: You have to, Okay, Okay, I don't know what I'll do.
- 21:28Speaker 2: You can think about it, but please tell me when
- 21:30Speaker 2: you do, all right, I want to know. Now you're
- 21:32Speaker 2: a mum. You seem to be a bit of a
- 21:34Speaker 2: whizz at a side hustle. I need to know what
- 21:37Speaker 2: is your best money habit.
- 21:39Speaker 4: I have a pretty good automatic banking system set up
- 21:42Speaker 4: now with up Bank. Once my pay comes in, all
- 21:46Speaker 4: my bills are allocated to the separate accounts and I
- 21:48Speaker 4: don't have to worry about them for the future.
- 21:51Speaker 2: I love that so much. How did you work out
- 21:53Speaker 2: what needed to go where and when? Was it a
- 21:55Speaker 2: bit of a teething process or was it just a
- 21:57Speaker 2: set and forget one day?
- 21:58Speaker 1: Like?
- 21:58Speaker 2: How do we all do this?
- 22:01Speaker 4: So? I worked out all my bills that come up.
- 22:03Speaker 4: So when Red Joe services, I worked out all the
- 22:07Speaker 4: amounts that they are. Then I worked out what they
- 22:09Speaker 4: would be monthly, and then I would work out what
- 22:11Speaker 4: they would be weekly once it fills up into my
- 22:14Speaker 4: bank account. It's therefore when that bill actually comes in.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Queen, I love this so much. It makes me so
- 22:19Speaker 2: happy to hear. Let's bring down the mood, though. What's
- 22:22Speaker 2: your worst money habit?
- 22:24Speaker 4: Okay, So I love to go out for dinner and drink.
- 22:27Speaker 4: I do have expensive taste. Now that's thanks to my
- 22:30Speaker 4: girlfriend Rude. But it does align to my values all right.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Well, she can say, she's all right, I've got no
- 22:37Speaker 2: beef with her. What does that look like? How are
- 22:39Speaker 2: you budgeting for that? And you know, is that something
- 22:41Speaker 2: where you're like, ah, the it's my worst money? Have
- 22:43Speaker 2: it because I just do it and don't think about
- 22:46Speaker 2: my budget or is that oh now it's such a
- 22:48Speaker 2: significant portion of my budget.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Well with all the bills and they're allocated for I
- 22:53Speaker 4: do set up another account so when I have, say,
- 22:57Speaker 4: more money from the site hustle, I'll just chuck it
- 23:00Speaker 4: into that account so that money is there that I
- 23:03Speaker 4: can see. But I do sometimes go over that and
- 23:06Speaker 4: just spend be a little bit cheeky.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I love it. It's not even the worst, like
- 23:11Speaker 2: dinner and drinks, especially with someone you love. Like ten
- 23:13Speaker 2: out of ten, I love it. We're not going to
- 23:15Speaker 2: regret that all right now that we've had a really
- 23:18Speaker 2: good conversation. At the start of the conversation, you said, look,
- 23:20Speaker 2: I reckon, I'm a bit of a bee. I have
- 23:22Speaker 2: learned so much about you in such a short period
- 23:24Speaker 2: of time. Do you still think that your money habits
- 23:27Speaker 2: or a bee? If so, why, if not, what would
- 23:30Speaker 2: you regrade them to.
- 23:31Speaker 4: I would say I'm still a bee. I'm happy with
- 23:34Speaker 4: everything I'm doing where I'm at with my finances. I
- 23:37Speaker 4: could be better, but now I'm happy. I would like
- 23:40Speaker 4: to educate and learn as much as I can about investing.
- 23:43Speaker 4: And I think once I get there and I'm happy,
- 23:45Speaker 4: I'll then give myself the.
- 23:47Speaker 2: A oh, we can do that together. I've got you, like,
- 23:49Speaker 2: I have so much investing content, like, I'm going to
- 23:52Speaker 2: shove it all your way and you're going to be
- 23:54Speaker 2: the most educated mom out there before we go. I
- 23:57Speaker 2: have another question because obviously you've been so open. I
- 24:01Speaker 2: can't have ownership over being proud of somebody that have
- 24:03Speaker 2: had nothing to do with. But I just I look
- 24:05Speaker 2: at your story and I go far out, like I mean, awe,
- 24:07Speaker 2: Like I think you've done so well. You know, even
- 24:10Speaker 2: when you said before you were like, look, I found
- 24:12Speaker 2: out I was pregnant, shoved drugs to the side, didn't
- 24:15Speaker 2: do that, and I went to the doctor and said
- 24:18Speaker 2: how much I was taking and what was going on?
- 24:20Speaker 2: Like even that step most people like, absolutely not. I
- 24:23Speaker 2: don't want to talk to a doctor. There would be
- 24:25Speaker 2: so much judgment, There would be, you know, so many
- 24:27Speaker 2: issues with that. If somebody is listening to this and
- 24:30Speaker 2: they're in a similar position to the position you were
- 24:32Speaker 2: in when you were twenty one twenty two. What would
- 24:34Speaker 2: your advice be to them? Because if they're listening to this,
- 24:37Speaker 2: I already know they're like, I want her life, like
- 24:40Speaker 2: I want to be like her. She's a queen. How
- 24:42Speaker 2: did she do it? What is her advice?
- 24:45Speaker 4: Oh gosh, that's a hard one.
- 24:47Speaker 2: I didn't promise the questions would be easy, my friend.
- 24:51Speaker 4: Just take it day by day and know that you'll
- 24:54Speaker 4: step in in the right direction. When you're in that
- 24:57Speaker 4: world and you're in that place, it is a very
- 25:00Speaker 4: gray and very dark place, and I think the further
- 25:04Speaker 4: away from it you get, the more color that you
- 25:08Speaker 4: feel comes into your life. It is a hard process,
- 25:11Speaker 4: but you'll get there for sure. I love it.
- 25:13Speaker 2: I love it. I feel like I've learned so much.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Thank you so much for joining us. I'm sorry that
- 25:18Speaker 2: that is all we have time for today, but it
- 25:21Speaker 2: has been an absolute pleasure having a chat with you
- 25:24Speaker 2: and getting to spend some time together.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Thank you.
