Transcript
- 0:00Have you ever noticed that when we talk about boundaries on the podcast, we almost always
- 0:05talk about what we have to give up, the things that we have to say no to, the activities
- 0:10we can't do, or the opportunities that we might have to miss?
- 0:15But what if healthy boundaries aren't about saying no?
- 0:19What if they're actually about protecting your most important yes?
- 0:25If you're tired of people-pleasing, caring too much, and wondering why peace still feels
- 0:30so hard to hold onto, you're in the right place.
- 0:34Hi, I'm Lori, mom, former people-pleaser, and your Boundaries Coach.
- 0:40Here we talk about how to protect your peace, set healthier boundaries, and get clear on
- 0:45what actually matters so that you can build a life that feels lighter, calmer, and more
- 0:50satisfying.
- 0:52So let's stop the chaos for a minute, moms, catch our breath, and get into this next episode.
- 1:01Welcome back to Healthy Boundaries for Moms.
- 1:03I am your host, Lori Grimes, and this is your midweek reset, which is just a quick dose
- 1:09of encouragement and perspective to help you realign with what matters most.
- 1:16So recap, on Monday's podcast, we talked about boundaries 101, what boundaries are,
- 1:23and what they're not.
- 1:24But today, I want to offer a different perspective, because I think many of us hear the word boundary
- 1:31and immediately think restriction.
- 1:35We think about all the things that we're not going to be able to do anymore, all the things
- 1:39that we're just going to have to say no to, or the opportunities that we're going to miss,
- 1:43and before long, boundaries just kind of start to feel like walls and like a prison
- 1:48of sorts.
- 1:49Like they're keeping us from the life that we really want.
- 1:53But what if healthy boundaries aren't meant to shrink your life?
- 1:57Maybe they were actually there to create space for it.
- 2:00So like this, I think sometimes we're viewing boundaries through this lens of scarcity.
- 2:07If I say no to this, I'm going to miss out, right?
- 2:10We have the FOMO, fear of missing out.
- 2:12If I don't volunteer, someone will be disappointed in me.
- 2:15So that's that people pleasing piece.
- 2:18If I don't sign my child up for one more activity, they're going to fall behind all their peers.
- 2:24How about if I take time for myself, that's time I'm taking away from someone else.
- 2:30But healthy boundaries are not about scarcity.
- 2:36They're about stewardship.
- 2:38They're about intentionally protecting the things that God has called us to prioritize.
- 2:44So this week, I found myself thinking about that.
- 2:48The other day, I dropped off my kids for a movie, and while they enjoyed their movie,
- 2:54I headed straight to a bookstore because I really needed some time to work on the podcast.
- 3:00And I wanted to take some time to look through some home and design magazines because I love
- 3:05to create and I love decor.
- 3:08And it really fills me up when I get to look at beauty and learn about things like that.
- 3:14And my kids got something that they enjoyed.
- 3:15They got to go see this movie that they wanted to see with their friends.
- 3:19So I got to work toward a goal that was important to me while also investing in something that
- 3:25I love.
- 3:26And nobody lost.
- 3:28I think that's like the piece we're missing.
- 3:30No one had to sacrifice.
- 3:32We simply just found a way to honor both of them.
- 3:36And I think that's where many of us moms are getting stuck.
- 3:38We assume it's either our needs or our family's needs.
- 3:42Like they are diametrically opposed.
- 3:45Either I'm going to get my health goals done, or it's going to be family time.
- 3:50Or either I'm going to have my personal growth, or I'm going to serve others.
- 3:54Either rest or productivity.
- 3:57But often there's another option.
- 4:01Sometimes healthy boundaries help us to get creative.
- 4:05Maybe you need to get your steps in so you take a walk with your family.
- 4:09I remember during my daughter's soccer season, I would watch half of her practice and then
- 4:15I would walk for half of her practice.
- 4:17So both of those things were met.
- 4:20I got to see her play and I got to get my steps in.
- 4:24Maybe your kids want to go to the park and you need movement and fresh air too.
- 4:27Maybe just going out with your kids for a walk takes care of both of those things.
- 4:33With my son, he is strength training right now.
- 4:36And he is doing that with his two other friends.
- 4:38So I'm also strength training.
- 4:40So with the summer, I changed up my schedule to match theirs.
- 4:44And so now I take them to strength train and I also strength train at the same time.
- 4:50Maybe your kids are working on summer reading and you want them to be focused on that.
- 4:55You don't have to be on top of their summer reading.
- 4:57You can let them do that while you work on a project that's important to you.
- 5:02How about maybe protecting your health would look like choosing meals that support not
- 5:07only your goals, but also your family's goals at the same time.
- 5:12Those can be connected.
- 5:14Or how about family connection?
- 5:18We do a lot of evening walks in our neighborhood and that helps us get the dog out for a walk.
- 5:23And it gives everyone a chance to connect and talk and see the beauty of our neighborhood.
- 5:28And it's just a really great moment for us, especially in the summer.
- 5:32So maybe one of the most important boundaries you keep is simply just going to bed on time
- 5:37instead of filling every evening with commitments.
- 5:41So what is the point I'm trying to make?
- 5:43I'm trying to say that healthy boundaries aren't always about closing doors.
- 5:48Sometimes they're about opening the right ones for the season.
- 5:51And in Ephesians 5, 15 through 16, it says, be careful then how you live, not as unwise,
- 5:58but as wise, making the most of every opportunity.
- 6:02And I love that verse because it's reminding us that intentional living, it matters.
- 6:08We are not called to do everything.
- 6:11We are just called to be wise stewards of the time and the energy and the opportunities
- 6:16that God is giving us.
- 6:18And sometimes, guys, wisdom isn't found in doing more.
- 6:23Sometimes it's found in creating the space for what matters most.
- 6:28And in Romans 12 too, it tells us, do not conform to the pattern of this world, but
- 6:33be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
- 6:37So I use this idea in the mindset that we need to renew the idea that boundaries are
- 6:45not restrictive.
- 6:46Maybe boundaries aren't about limitation.
- 6:49Maybe they're more about alignment.
- 6:52And maybe they're one of the ways that God is helping us build a life that really reflects
- 6:57our priorities instead of everyone else's expectations of us.
- 7:02So here is your midweek reset question.
- 7:06What important yes are your boundaries protecting right now?
- 7:12And where might God be inviting you to get creative instead of simply just saying no?
- 7:17Fred, healthy boundaries aren't always about a sacrifice.
- 7:22Sometimes they're just about stewardship.
