- 0:11Hello and welcome back to the Mindsets podcast.
- 0:14We are back home. We got like, yeah.
- 0:16It's a little bit different. I did like the room but won't
- 0:19lie it it it felt nice to have an away day.
- 0:22It did. Yeah.
- 0:22It was fun. We're going to, if you guys
- 0:24liked it, then we'll we're going to play around potentially with
- 0:28some few options at the moment. If you prefer this then tell us.
- 0:32We're we're used to this, I think.
- 0:33Also, if you have no idea what we're talking about, go back and
- 0:36watch the last episode. At such a valid point.
- 0:38That's great Curious thing for you guys.
- 0:40Welcome back. It is episode 77.
- 0:43We are. We say this most times we are
- 0:45motoring through them. We are.
- 0:46Yeah. How are you doing, Charles?
- 0:48I'm going for like a more rugged look.
- 0:50I don't know if you'd noticed growing out the facial.
- 0:52Hair. Oh yeah, yeah, come for the beat
- 0:54I. Like it, I'm trying hard.
- 0:56Someone, someone said to me earlier she was like, that's the
- 0:59first stage or or sign of someone who's just given up.
- 1:02So are you 29 years into this at this .0?
- 1:04Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. She's like you look.
- 1:07Unclean. You have to go through that
- 1:10phase. Exactly.
- 1:11You had seen what I look like in my unclean phase.
- 1:13Yeah. It was worth it.
- 1:14We can only Joey's worth one day, maybe.
- 1:17OK, so the way we start every episode off.
- 1:20Yeah, we've got news. We do 2 minute news. 2 minutes
- 1:22of it. Yeah, 2 minutes of it.
- 1:25Are you? Do you want me to start the
- 1:26timer or are you going to start us off?
- 1:28You start. I'll start us off.
- 1:29You start the timer. OK, time starts in 321-GO.
- 1:35Big one, and my favorite one is there's a kid from New Zealand
- 1:39called Sam Roof who is 16 years old and he ran a 348 mile that
- 1:45is. Absurd.
- 1:46Like absurd. I think it was 348 eight and he
- 1:48set a new under 18 world record. Like mind blowing speeds.
- 1:52Hopefully he hasn't peaked too early and we'll see lots of him
- 1:54from the future. Fantastic.
- 1:56You started to speed up there because you saw me.
- 1:57Check my watch, I'm going to go. I'm going to steal from you.
- 2:00Lewis Hamilton and Kim Kardashian are dating.
- 2:02No, they're not. They are.
- 2:03They're not. We're going to move on.
- 2:04We. Don't have time, We don't have
- 2:05time. Six Nations is starting new
- 2:09Thursday evening start because they don't want to clash with
- 2:12the Winter Olympics, which is also starting this week.
- 2:14It is indeed another thing that's happened.
- 2:16High rocks Phoenix, The elites happened.
- 2:19We got a new world record from Joanna Vietrich.
- 2:22She's set 56 O 3 for her pro time.
- 2:25We also had some drama going on in the men's pro double S race.
- 2:28If you want to talk about that. Hunter Dickinson, they were
- 2:31going for the world record. They were on pace for it to the
- 2:34second pretty much the whole race.
- 2:35And then at the end, unfortunately, they had 14 no
- 2:38reps which cost them the world record by about 3 seconds.
- 2:41So gutting for them. We'll be excited to see them in
- 2:43Stockholm because they qualified.
- 2:45That is the last time they're going to be able to race
- 2:47together competitively because after this season you're no
- 2:50longer allowed to race in the early 15 with anyone that is not
- 2:53from the same nationality as you.
- 2:54That's because they're looking towards the Olympics.
- 2:56Tennis Australian Open final Alkraz versus Djokovic.
- 3:01Djokovic did not manage to come away with it, but as a result
- 3:04Alkraz won. And that makes him, I think, the
- 3:069th male ever to have won all of the majors.
- 3:09And he's only 22, which is like mind blown insane.
- 3:14And you've got one more thing, Team England.
- 3:16Oh yeah, So anyone who follows golf, the peripherals of golf,
- 3:20the team, I think it's called the Icons Cup, loads of like
- 3:24legendary retired sportsmen and women play golf.
- 3:27It's Team England versus the world, and Team England won.
- 3:30That was one minute, 54 seconds. Wow, I was on the real I felt
- 3:33the pressure. I'm going to bridge from news
- 3:36into grind my gears nicely here because for those of you that
- 3:40are listening to this, on the day this comes out, the Winter
- 3:42Olympics has actually been going for a week, but officially the
- 3:46Winter Olympics has been going for five days.
- 3:49So we've discussed this a year ago when we were talking about
- 3:52the the Summer Olympic Games, but it is a massive grind, my
- 3:56gear that the Olympic Games and the Winter Olympic Games start
- 4:00before the opening ceremony. It makes no sense.
- 4:02And for context, if you're new to this or you don't, you don't
- 4:05remember that episode. There is no reason for it.
- 4:08We looked it up. There is actually no reason from
- 4:10it. It's just poor organization.
- 4:12Because it's like we need to do some events first.
- 4:15There's too much of some events. That's it that, but it doesn't
- 4:18make. Sense just move the star
- 4:20earlier. And it's not like they're
- 4:21they're using the same venues. I feel like that would be more
- 4:25of a problem in the Winter Olympics where maybe they're
- 4:27using the same slopes for similar events or same jumps or
- 4:30same like half pipes or whatever for similar events but for the
- 4:34Summer Olympics. Can you guess what the first
- 4:35event of the Winter Olympic Games is?
- 4:37Because if for us it's happening today.
- 4:40I'm going to say something like biathlon curling, yeah, which is
- 4:46it must have its own specific venue, so there it doesn't
- 4:49matter when it starts. Now I would also say like
- 4:53possibly one of the less entertaining watches of the
- 4:56Winter Olympic Games. However, I might disagree.
- 4:59Historically, for Great Britain, it's been one of our best.
- 5:01It's quite fun, like people seem to always get into the curling.
- 5:04I would love to be able to play it.
- 5:05You can play it in like Roxy Ballrooms, but it's not the
- 5:08same. It's nice and imagine it's not
- 5:09the same. Bear with the mop, yeah?
- 5:11Exactly. However, that's that's kind of
- 5:14like a little grime I get in bridges just nicely in.
- 5:17Have you got any grind my gears this week?
- 5:19I'm going to go someone wrote in.
- 5:20I'll go with someone who wrote in.
- 5:23They they didn't reply. So whether or not they wanted to
- 5:26remain anonymous or not. So I feel like I probably
- 5:28shouldn't say their name. I think that.
- 5:30May or maybe the other way really.
- 5:31Grown up with us, actually. Didn't reply.
- 5:34Your name is, but it's another swimming one.
- 5:36Oh, OK, I riled. The swimmers up with my lane
- 5:39issue the other week, but she said she didn't like it when
- 5:43people wore too much aftershave or like, too strong aftershave
- 5:48because when you're swimming, you can almost, like, taste it
- 5:51because it's like hanging in the water.
- 5:53Yeah, Yeah. Oh, I didn't.
- 5:54And I actually had this the other day and I was going to
- 5:56mention it some. The stars aligned and she popped
- 5:59up in the DMS and told us about it.
- 6:01But it doesn't matter who it is. But like, if you're wearing a
- 6:05lot of perfume, if you're wearing a lot of aftershave when
- 6:07you're in the pool, it gets like gets up in your grill.
- 6:11This goes back to my point of people should not be pissing in
- 6:14the pool. I don't know what, I just don't
- 6:17think aftershave is worse than than peeing in the pool.
- 6:21It's not worse. It's definitely not.
- 6:22It's definitely not worse. They're not on the sale.
- 6:24No, I got coated in the Ossuvage.
- 6:27Oh no, I got. Coated in someone's piss.
- 6:30I know which one's worse, so I'm I'm going to follow that up with
- 6:34another one that we had written in.
- 6:36So Venla, first of all, we were growing my gear because she sent
- 6:40one a couple months ago and apparently we didn't mention it
- 6:42if that happened and I still can't believe it happened.
- 6:45So her grind my gear was when you send in a grind my gear.
- 6:48And yeah, that's. Fair.
- 6:51We give her full credit because she's come through with an
- 6:53absolute banger. This one is high rocks related.
- 6:56It has been grinding her gears about high rocks and myself for
- 7:00other sporting events when people post their finish time.
- 7:04Plus a penalty. Yeah.
- 7:06So it's like, let's say you decided to run two laps of the
- 7:12whole hierarchy race instead of the 32 if it was or whatever,
- 7:16however many it was, you only decided to run 2 laps.
- 7:18You're obviously going to get a penalty for every time, but like
- 7:21they post. Oh yeah, Pyrox sub 6058 brackets
- 7:26plus 7 minute penalty for not knowing what on earth I was
- 7:28doing the entire time. Because I write an extra lap
- 7:31every. Time.
- 7:32An hour, in fact, that's what. Happened.
- 7:33Yeah, yeah, that's annoyed me for so long.
- 7:35And it's the same thing with like the chip time versus your
- 7:38like watch time. Do you know something that I've
- 7:40seen recently, which I haven't seen before?
- 7:42And it's from someone who's I don't want to call them out, but
- 7:47they're they're they're pretty well known on social media in
- 7:49the fitness space and they're trying to attempt to go sub
- 7:53sixty in a high rocks pro race. It's not their main sport.
- 7:56They do another sport. It's their main sport.
- 7:59But in his caption, he went for finishing high rocks.
- 8:02He went watch time. Oh, watch time.
- 8:06One hour something. I'm like, what?
- 8:07You you don't need to put watch time bro.
- 8:10There's a whole system in. Pastely so literally why it's
- 8:13there. So I think that's the same as
- 8:15like when runners look at people going Oh my my Strava time or my
- 8:19watch time versus my chip time. But I'm like, why have you
- 8:21looked at This is my watch time? And.
- 8:23How often do you finish your high rocks race?
- 8:25And as soon as you finish, click the watch.
- 8:27I'm always like 30 seconds out or like 2 minutes off because
- 8:31I've forgotten because I'm looking up at the actual screen
- 8:33where my chip time is. Yeah, no mental.
- 8:36You can't be doing that. That's actually just sparked
- 8:38something. What?
- 8:39What? Did you see Jenson Button did
- 8:41high rocks? I did see Jenson Button did
- 8:43high. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:45Definitely should have just stuck to driving by the looks of
- 8:47it. Although quite.
- 8:48Yeah, yeah, he's actually, the guy's an, the guy's an athlete.
- 8:52OK, cool. Next one I'm going to go.
- 8:55Yeah, go. I'm going to go with a fresh
- 8:56one. This this is fresh off the
- 8:59press, fresh out of the gym. Two hours ago, I nearly got
- 9:03arrested. Not directly, that's quite a
- 9:06stretch from what I actually happened, but I nearly
- 9:09aggressively I, I nearly I in my vision, I've made physical
- 9:13contacts with another human being for their actions in the
- 9:15gym and was not good. However, I turned up to do a gym
- 9:19session. I go to pure gym.
- 9:22We've we've discussed that and I don't have very high
- 9:25expectations for the etiquette in a pure gym.
- 9:28However, I walked in and a guy was very clearly taking
- 9:32ownership of the bench press. There is actually only one
- 9:35specific bench press. There's a rack so you can send
- 9:37your own up. There's only one designed and
- 9:39built. He has his towel and his phone
- 9:41on it. He's not on it.
- 9:44He's walking around and I'm like, you do you between your
- 9:47sets, whatever. So I go off and I start doing
- 9:50some of my other exercises. So I did five sets pull ups.
- 9:54I then went and did four sets of chest cysted rows.
- 9:57I'm not taking you through my whole program.
- 9:58I'm just trying to explain the timing situation.
- 10:01I then see he's still supposedly on the bench, but actually he
- 10:05sat on a free weight bench next to that bench doing incline
- 10:09bicep, incline bicep curls. And I'm like, OK, so he's not
- 10:13using the bench. Then I I'm going to go over and
- 10:15I'm going to say, is this your stuff?
- 10:18Because I'm going to use the bench.
- 10:20It has been half an hour at this point.
- 10:24So I go over and I'm like easing the bench and as I go over, he
- 10:28steps off the freeway bench relatively aggressively to get
- 10:31in my way and goes I've got three more and in my head am I
- 10:38three more? What you haven't, I genuinely
- 10:42have not seen you that bench was I've seen you do bicep car sets.
- 10:46So I can only assume that what you mean is I've got 3 mores.
- 10:48I've got three more sets of bicep cars not on that bench.
- 10:51So I'm like, OK, I'm going to be over there back where I was.
- 10:54Can you tell me when you're done, please?
- 10:56Let me apply some pressure. So I go away.
- 10:59And I started doing. I did incline bench press with
- 11:02dumbbells and then did lateral raises, not superset.
- 11:06Yeah, yeah, separate. I'm getting to the end of those.
- 11:10Someone else goes over to this guy.
- 11:11He's like, are you using that bench?
- 11:14And he's like, yeah, yeah, I'm sorry.
- 11:16Yeah, I'm looking. No word of a lie.
- 11:20From the time that I walked into the gym to the time that he came
- 11:23over and then told me that I could have it 51 minutes.
- 11:27No, I have no idea how long he was on it before.
- 11:31I arrived all day. So I then got on warmed up on
- 11:36his way. I had to do that.
- 11:37I had to Dick move, but I had to do it just straight away was
- 11:40like you can leave that mate started started warming up on
- 11:42it. I respect I was.
- 11:44Done within 10 minutes. I'd done four sets, 4 working
- 11:48sets, and then I was off. And I like the entire time.
- 11:51I just like stared it down any time you try to make eye contact
- 11:54with it. I gave it to him, but I like was
- 11:57not happy. So basically that was a massive
- 11:59grind. I get free out of those.
- 12:00And that, I mean, that feeds off what we were saying the other
- 12:02day about working in the in the commercial gym.
- 12:04Yeah, I think I'm I'm because I'm spending more time because
- 12:07this is another one of my grind my gears.
- 12:08I'm spending more time in the commercial gym recently.
- 12:12I see so many of these like bad habits.
- 12:15But one thing that like really aggravates me that shouldn't,
- 12:18which I mean essentially is therefore grind.
- 12:20My gear is I don't mind if you're, let's say, for example,
- 12:24you're on a hamstring curl or you're not like quad extension,
- 12:27something like where you're SAT. I don't mind when you're resting
- 12:30if you sit on it, if there's no one waiting and you can like
- 12:32scroll on your phone. But I see people they're
- 12:34scrolling on their phone whilst doing the reps.
- 12:37Oh. Yeah, OK.
- 12:39I'm like there's there's so little point in you doing that.
- 12:42There's so little point and there's just like comes back to
- 12:45like my inner coach of going like intention of movement and
- 12:48getting there. It's out of it.
- 12:49Fair enough if you're on like a step machine or like you're
- 12:52walking up. Yeah, you're on the treadmill.
- 12:54Treadmill. But if you're on a machine,
- 12:56yeah, yeah, there is no way you can believe that you're applying
- 12:58yourself. And like I've, I've the example
- 13:01I saw was like hamstring seated hamstring Co and there can't
- 13:05have been any weight on it. And it's just like going up and
- 13:07down, up and down once you're kind of like scrolling TikTok.
- 13:10And I was just like, yeah, no, it's so.
- 13:12Frustrating the gym to say you went to the gym.
- 13:14But that's basically it. And I I know that's, that's OK
- 13:17for some people. That's why some people want to
- 13:18go, but it's just like, get something out of.
- 13:21It if you're there, do you know what I think?
- 13:22I think it is OK for people to do what they want if you were in
- 13:26the gym on your own, but I think what I'm going to connect from
- 13:31that to what I experienced today is just like have some self.
- 13:34Awareness have some be this person who was sat doing this.
- 13:37There wasn't anyone waiting and it like it wasn't busy.
- 13:41It's never really that busy, but I'm just like, I'm like going on
- 13:44your phone. It's complete.
- 13:44Like I go on the cross trainer and look at my phone.
- 13:46I'm watching like TV or whatever because it's boring otherwise.
- 13:50But yeah, I'm just like, you can get so much more out of the
- 13:52exercise if you're actually applying yourself.
- 13:54Yeah, fair. I'm going to come back with
- 14:00Wrigley's extra bubble mint gum. Riggy's extra bubble mint gum
- 14:05now. There's two reasons this pisses
- 14:08me off. I saw this on the notes though
- 14:09there's no context, it's just bubble mint.
- 14:11Oh, it's like here we go. So #1 awful flavour #2 I think
- 14:17I'm about one more occasion away from suing them for mis selling
- 14:23their product. Here we go because when I go in,
- 14:26let's do it to when I court case.
- 14:28Let's see what we can get here. We'll be sponsored by our own
- 14:31court case. When I go into the supermarket
- 14:34and I go I need some gun. I really like the Wrigley's
- 14:38extra white good gum strong got crunchy bits in it like that.
- 14:43However it's always near the bubble mint.
- 14:47The problem being is that the bubble mint one says bubble mint
- 14:51on it. You're wrong.
- 14:54It doesn't always say bubble mint on it.
- 14:57And the thing with the bubble mint one is it some it says
- 14:59Wrigley's extra white. White in big is bubble mint
- 15:04flavour. So Wrigley's extra white just
- 15:07doesn't have anything extra Bubble mint somewhere has tiny
- 15:09little bubble mint on the side and it is the exact same
- 15:12packaging. And so the number of I haven't
- 15:15had a successful purchase of it extra white like I want in 2026.
- 15:19Really. Nope.
- 15:20That's your own fault then. You're your own problem.
- 15:23I. I'm not accepting.
- 15:24I'm not. I'm not saying that I'm not an
- 15:26idiot. I'm just saying, I mean, they're
- 15:29doing. It on purpose.
- 15:30And what I also think that pisses me off is they've
- 15:32probably gone. This guy on this podcast one
- 15:35time said that our bubble mint favour is terrible but explain
- 15:39to us why it's got such high sales.
- 15:42That's the reason no one wants to buy it.
- 15:45Everyone buys it by accident. Yeah, yeah, that's funny.
- 15:47I'm gonna have a look now. I've never noticed.
- 15:49That it's infuriating because not it's not every packet, but
- 15:53it's like they've got multiple iterations or what's going on is
- 15:56I am buying the right packet bubble me in it for some reason
- 15:58because they're just trying to shove their stock out.
- 16:00Because no one else wants it. Neither, and I've got one more.
- 16:04This one's like, again, it's like a peripheral that I've
- 16:06stolen off someone else's story. They weren't actually, they
- 16:08didn't send it in to us, but I saw it, I messaged them about
- 16:11it. They were in a public sauna.
- 16:13So that at the gym, public sauna, there's so many things
- 16:17wrong. There's so many things.
- 16:18Firstly, there's someone else in the sauna.
- 16:21Obviously that's that's normal. They were eating.
- 16:26That's the first. Not fine.
- 16:27That's the red flag. That's not fine.
- 16:29Not only were they just eating, but they were eating a tuna
- 16:33sandwich, a tuna sandwich, which tuna by itself is like socially,
- 16:40some for some reason frowned upon eating in kind of stinks
- 16:43because it stinks. Yeah, I like tuna, but I'm
- 16:47probably not going to eat it on the tube.
- 16:49I'm probably not going to eat it in public.
- 16:51I'll wait until I'm at home when I'm eating my tuna sandwich or
- 16:53whatever, or in a private place. The last fucking place I'm going
- 16:57to eat a tuna sandwich or a sandwich in general is a sauna.
- 17:00Yeah, I don't want to eat anything in the sauna.
- 17:04I've just come up with the term microwapists of people that put
- 17:08their stinking food in a microwave and just destroy the
- 17:11microwave for everyone else that remaining lunch too.
- 17:13So microwapists are on a pretty bad level, but that is.
- 17:19Far away. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:21But like, why would nothing about that's enjoyable?
- 17:24If, if that happened and it it was smelly enough, I would leave
- 17:28my session or I'd leave it at some point and I would tell
- 17:32someone at staff who it was and that they were eating a tuna
- 17:35sandwich in their Bantam and I'd be like, they made a mess that I
- 17:38cleared up. I just add a little bit.
- 17:40You're welcome, by the way. Add fuel to the pie.
- 17:42Give me a free membership, kick them out.
- 17:43We had a we had a no fish in the microwave rule at our old gym.
- 17:47No microwave piss. Yeah, too many occasions where
- 17:50you walk in the staff room and you're like, Oh my, who's
- 17:54microwaved the whole fucking card or whatever.
- 17:58I've got one more and this was not sent in, but it was
- 18:02highlighted by someone to me and is very topical.
- 18:06We've spoken about the Winter Olympics already.
- 18:09In fact, one of the main focuses for today's episode is going to
- 18:11be the Winter Olympics. Now, how I'm going to do a
- 18:13fantastic job of bridging the gap is that there are more
- 18:16sports. We actually discussed this a
- 18:17couple of episodes ago, being added to the Olympics and Winter
- 18:20Olympics every time it comes around, which is really cool.
- 18:22I like it. However, did you know that the
- 18:26Nordic combined event, OK, which is where you have the shooting
- 18:31and the Nordic skiing, historically and still to this
- 18:36day, women can't compete in at the Olympic Games?
- 18:38No, it was a men only event. Shut up.
- 18:41Ridiculous. There's a there's a whole
- 18:42league, there's World Championships.
- 18:44Like you can compete in it at the Olympics.
- 18:45I. Should've been watching the
- 18:46World Cup on Discovery Plus which I realised I now pay so.
- 18:50You've got an entire subset of athletes that are not allowed to
- 18:53be Olympic. Is that actually a thing still?
- 18:54A thing that's that's that's more than a grandma.
- 18:58Shit, it's gone to process. So it's like women don't do
- 19:02hirings in gymnastics in the Summer Olympics.
- 19:05Why if I'm not? Yeah.
- 19:07We're at a point now where like athletic development and sports
- 19:10knowledge and everything, we should understand that women
- 19:13it's more than capable of doing. So dumb and stuff like that is
- 19:17so dumb, isn't it? That is a good crime idea.
- 19:19So that takes us in. As I said, today's focus is
- 19:23going to be around the Winter Olympics.
- 19:26Today we might tease more with news and that kind of thing than
- 19:29the upcoming episodes, but we're trying something new.
- 19:31Because something that you said on the last episode when we were
- 19:33joined by Roscoe, which I thought was a particularly
- 19:35interesting point, was that you think tennis athletes.
- 19:39Tennis players are some of the best athletes in the world
- 19:43because of the way that they have to train, they have to have
- 19:46a level of endurance. They have to have the skill
- 19:48base. They also have to have the
- 19:49agility and the longevity, all of that, which I do tend to
- 19:54agree with. I think so.
- 19:55But it got me thinking. I would love to know more about
- 19:58how other athletes actually is. So interesting.
- 20:01And so as much as we want to bring guests on to this show, to
- 20:04actually, you know, pin them down and get out Djokovic on it.
- 20:08Yeah, We'll get Djokovic on here someday.
- 20:11I mean, his career is going down here, and we're not going to get
- 20:13out crowds. But I thought we'd start off
- 20:17today with Scotty James. Scottie James to some of you
- 20:20will just be like 2 first names put together, but Scottie James
- 20:24is a 31 year old Australian snowboarder who competes in the
- 20:28half pipe. He is incredibly successful but
- 20:32not in his own way. In a sense I mean.
- 20:35So as a bit of a background, Scottie James has been World
- 20:38champion four times. 2015, 20/17/2019 and 20252025 is
- 20:44particularly interesting. We'll come back to that because
- 20:46Scotty James has never won Olympic gold, he's been world
- 20:51champion. Four times.
- 20:52And that's crazy. If you've gone as Wikipedia,
- 20:53just Scroll down how many medals he's won and you're like, so
- 20:56somewhere who'd have been my finger scratched?
- 20:57Yeah, there must be an Olympic gold in there.
- 20:59So he. Has won Olympic bronze in
- 21:02Pyongyang, 20/20/18 Pyongyang was it And then he won and then
- 21:06flags bearer as well, did you know that?
- 21:07Yeah. Gideon Faye.
- 21:08Yeah. Someone's been doing their
- 21:09research, I have. And then he also won a silver
- 21:11medal in 2022 in Beijing. Cool.
- 21:14But Goldman has always eluded him.
- 21:16And we have this discussion when Roscoe brought up Andy Murray.
- 21:20And we were talking about how good Andy Murray is a tennis
- 21:22player because he still had success around the time of
- 21:25Federer and Nadal. Djokovic.
- 21:27Well, a name that you will probably know in snow body half
- 21:31pipe is Shaun White. Shaun White existed.
- 21:35Now there were other riders in and amongst it as well.
- 21:38There's been some great riders from Japan who also still in
- 21:41existence and still around and competing.
- 21:43But Shaun White, the issue with him is that he was almost a bit
- 21:48like, if you were talking about the Ronaldo versus Messi debate,
- 21:52he would be more of the the messy, the kind of natural
- 21:55talent that I don't doubt has had a lot of work go into it.
- 21:59But he could always turn up on the day with zero form and win a
- 22:04competition by putting down a perfect run.
- 22:06Just put it out the bag. And then you've got Scotty
- 22:08James, who from a very, very young age, and in fact, fun fact
- 22:12started snowboarding when he was three years old on an
- 22:15advertising board, but by 6 years old, he was snowboarding
- 22:19competitively. Age 13, he was competing
- 22:23internationally. Now there's a documentary out
- 22:26about Squishy James. The kind of goes through this.
- 22:27If you want to watch it, it's on Netflix right now, which will
- 22:30give you a bit more of the gaps that we're kind of glazing over
- 22:32at the moment. However, when you're a junior,
- 22:35you're a junior, I believe up until the age of 11 and then
- 22:40from being 11 you're competing against that.
- 22:43Object, is it perfect? So like, it's a little bit like
- 22:45gymnastics. It's a huge jump in that sense.
- 22:47So he went from having like great success to now he was just
- 22:50like, literally a kid competing. So when he was Yeah 13, he was
- 22:55competing internationally. Bonkers, isn't it?
- 22:56Yeah, he was going up against for long.
- 22:59I mean, he was going up against Sean Wyatt.
- 23:00So he was the youngest Australian Olympian I think in
- 23:0650 years or ever at the age of 15 at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic
- 23:10Games. So came 21st in half fight,
- 23:13which is crazy. But he got a photo with Shawn
- 23:17White. And Shawn White, now in this
- 23:19documentary, admits he doesn't really remember.
- 23:22Me. But like, he was just a kid and
- 23:24like, he was mostly younger than that and like, yeah, did a great
- 23:28job, but he was always this phenomenon.
- 23:30I think this is one of the things that we've spoken about
- 23:31so many times is like people peek really early on in their
- 23:34career and like then nothing comes of it.
- 23:37And he's an example of someone that did peak very early on in
- 23:40his career, but then has managed to sort of sustain success.
- 23:43And when we're talking about success, he hasn't just had
- 23:46success in the World Championships because in winter
- 23:48sport and more of the like extreme sports, you have the X
- 23:50Games. Yeah.
- 23:51So in the Winter X Games, he's pretty much.
- 23:53Won gold gold, gold, gold, gold. That's.
- 23:55What? Most of the scrolling?
- 23:56Yeah, so so. Amazing.
- 23:59One of the issues that he has had through his career, as a lot
- 24:01of athletes do have is injuries. So he's always been battling
- 24:05injury. However, that has kind of made
- 24:07him the athlete that he is and who we're going to discuss
- 24:08today. Let me preface this by saying
- 24:11you guys might know what halfpipe looks like.
- 24:14It's kind of in the name, but if we're talking sizing, if you
- 24:19were to stand at the bottom of the halfpipe and then you went
- 24:21to the sides where they take off, that is the size of A2
- 24:25story house with a roof. So like.
- 24:28It's huge. Yeah.
- 24:29It's scary. The next thing that makes that
- 24:30even more scary is when they take off, they go roughly, I
- 24:36mean a similar height up in the air.
- 24:39And when they're coming down to land, you're thinking snow.
- 24:43Well, for it to hold that shape on its own, it's so heavily
- 24:45compacted and used with water jets that freeze overnight, you
- 24:49are landing on like pretty much solid ice, solid ice, solid
- 24:53concrete at that speed, same thing.
- 24:56Yeah, they do the same thing. When you take off, if you're not
- 24:59coming down within the landing zone, which is realistically
- 25:02like the first one to two meters of that Ridge, then you're
- 25:05either hitting the Ridge and breaking something immediately
- 25:08or you're coming down and slap bang bottom of the pipe and
- 25:13breaking everything. So it's like the margins are
- 25:17tiny. But then one of the things that
- 25:19we would appreciate from a perspective of like
- 25:22understanding performance and how your body's going to
- 25:24operate, which he's had to learn, the load that goes
- 25:27through your body, even if you do catch it perfectly, it's not
- 25:31smooth. It's like the force absorption
- 25:33onto something so hard. Exactly.
- 25:35And you're doing all of that pretty reactively because most
- 25:39of the time when you're doing three 60s, ten 80s, all of these
- 25:42are Tomahawks, which is like a trick that I think Sean might
- 25:44invented. The line is going to be slightly
- 25:47different each time, isn't it? And also, like, the surface is
- 25:50never going to be consistent. So I'm not looking at it.
- 25:52You're making, Yeah, going in blind.
- 25:53You're just making a decision based off feel.
- 25:55Yeah. I think there's already, like, I
- 25:57know we're going to go into more detail.
- 25:58There's just so many layers to this which fascinate me.
- 26:01So one of the things that I have experienced in my own winter
- 26:05sport journey, when I was doing my season, I really wanted to
- 26:08learn how to. 360. You can say that.
- 26:10Yeah. The problem that I.
- 26:11Have been so much cooler for me, like a.
- 26:13Eventually I still get there. It took me way longer than I
- 26:15wish it had for me. And like gymnastics, despite
- 26:18being right when I was just not a thing, I wasn't getting enough
- 26:22air because when you're going off a jump and you're looking to
- 26:25do some level of rotation, you have to load it and then you
- 26:27have to release it at the right time.
- 26:30But I wasn't giving enough respect to how much you have to
- 26:33jump off the ground, even if you're on a jump.
- 26:36So like exactly. So there's there's a lot of
- 26:38explosivity. And if if you were to go off a
- 26:41half pipe and it's the same, I believe for skateboarding as
- 26:44well. I'm not a great skateboarder,
- 26:45won't I? If you want to land back in the
- 26:48pipe, you have to push off because that keeps you in there.
- 26:50Otherwise, naturally your body will absorb and you'll go off
- 26:53like it is a jump. So you have to pop at the right
- 26:55time. But in order to be able to get
- 26:57the height as well, to get the time to do the trick you want to
- 26:59do, you have to press off pretty hard.
- 27:02So already we're looking at the idea of strength training would
- 27:06be pretty beneficial. And not only does Scotty now
- 27:11have a pretty rigorous program around strength training that
- 27:15means he can repeatedly give out those loads, but also injury
- 27:19prevention from receiving the load when he comes back down to
- 27:22land. Now I'd be interested from your
- 27:26perspective what you would assume his training holistically
- 27:30would look like pre season and during.
- 27:32Yeah, yeah, he put me on the spot here.
- 27:34The only, the only thing I have from the context of this and
- 27:38that old Jim, I think he is world champion.
- 27:41I don't want to miss misquote that a guy called Joe Poland,
- 27:45you go and look him up on Instagram because he's
- 27:47incredible. A sport I didn't know existed,
- 27:50water sport. So it's water skiing.
- 27:53He's I mean, he's incredible at trick skiing on the water and
- 27:55whatever, but it's like water skiing, jumping for distance and
- 28:02it's incredible. Like we'll, we'll have to I'll
- 28:04have to show you a video afterwards.
- 28:05But he would come to the gym because he's like, hey man, I
- 28:09need to get my legs stronger. And I was like, didn't even
- 28:13process one that was a sport or a thing that you'd need to do.
- 28:16But obviously to create more power and create more force to
- 28:19go further, you need to have stronger legs.
- 28:21So it's a similar comparison. So without going into too much
- 28:25detail, because I think there must also be like a little bit,
- 28:28maybe even for me in my own head, a stigma around sports
- 28:31like half pipe or skateboarding in general, where these people
- 28:34are just like they've been skating around since they were
- 28:36kids or snowboarding since they were kids.
- 28:38And there's no real like process.
- 28:41They just like like to do tricks and then the rest of the time
- 28:43they just bum around basically. But it's like a serious sport
- 28:46and they take their training very seriously.
- 28:48So I'd imagine there's a lot of compound strength movements.
- 28:52So you're thinking about developing explosive power.
- 28:55So things like backs, what's deadlifts, I'm sure he's doing a
- 28:58lot of probably, I mean, there's going to be different phases in
- 29:03his training in the lead up to season.
- 29:05But I'd imagine the most rigorous work or demanding work
- 29:09he's doing offseason in prep for like the skill refinement and
- 29:13the practice that he's going to do in season maybe or just as he
- 29:16builds into the season. But I'd imagine there's also a
- 29:19lot of plyometrics, a lot of jumping, a lot of isometrics,
- 29:22probably before the plyometrics that he's doing a lot of like
- 29:26other force absorption. So depth jumps, things like
- 29:29jumping off boxes and landing. There's one of my favorite
- 29:32phrases from Olympic weightlifting, which is you're
- 29:35only as strong as the force you can absorb or only as you can
- 29:38absorb. It's a bit like Yoderie, but
- 29:41I've been imagined. There's other sort of explosive
- 29:43drills for hip extension. So he's probably doing some sort
- 29:45of Olympic weightlifting like power cleans, maybe from hangs,
- 29:49something like that. Lots of jumps.
- 29:51Then I'd imagine single leg stability work as well.
- 29:55Obviously you've got both feet on the board, but maybe one's
- 29:58dominant in certain tricks or in certain positions when you're
- 30:01landing. So it's like I'd be interested
- 30:03to know if I piece together a training program for Scotty.
- 30:07This is the reason I wanted to put you on the spot, because I
- 30:09really wanted to see how your brain worked breaking things out
- 30:11because there were things there that I wouldn't have thought as
- 30:13quickly as you did. And but you're you're generally
- 30:16pretty right. So in an offseason, typically
- 30:18most athletes will focus on strength because through the
- 30:20season, through niggles, through having to focus on the race or
- 30:23the competition specific elements, you don't have enough
- 30:28volume of the strength training to build your strength.
- 30:30You're just trying to maintain. So he very much takes the
- 30:33approach of offseason strength training.
- 30:36And I'm going to preface 2 things.
- 30:38First of all, before we go into the depths of this, I haven't
- 30:42got Scotty on speed dial yet. So when I'm telling you what he
- 30:46does, this has been taken from previous podcasts he's done,
- 30:49this documentary that I've watched and then his own YouTube
- 30:52channel. The other thing that I would
- 30:54like to introduce you to a bit like how I mentioned, you've got
- 30:57Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's
- 31:00always kind of the scene as the guy that does the work well, the
- 31:04Scotty and I quote says that he wants to be looked at as a
- 31:08performance athlete that snowboards rather than a
- 31:10snowboarder that trains like an athlete.
- 31:15So he's so good. That's really that.
- 31:17I mean that that is testament to his work ethic and understanding
- 31:20that maybe he's not as quote UN quote, lucky or talented as
- 31:24others in the field. But I do think there's like also
- 31:26there is a stigma around it because for example, let's just
- 31:29take a runner because it's an easy example to get better at
- 31:32running, you have to put in so much like endurance work for it.
- 31:36Whereas like for snowboarding, especially in halfpipe where
- 31:39it's more techie, it's about skill and trick.
- 31:42And you don't necessarily associate that with like they
- 31:46have to be in the gym refining backflips and tumbling and
- 31:50etcetera, etcetera. And then doing all of the
- 31:52strength training on top of it. You think of it or they just
- 31:54must have been doing that since they were younger.
- 31:56And as a result, they're quite good at it.
- 31:58But there's there's pieces to it and to be the best in the world,
- 32:01obviously you have to put work in.
- 32:02I think there's also an ego thing because when you are young
- 32:05and you're good, you kind of assume that you can be that way
- 32:08the whole time, which is what he would have experienced in his
- 32:10success because there's no way he was doing some of those
- 32:12movements you mentioned when he was a kid.
- 32:14However, going into his understanding of pre season and
- 32:19and during season training, typically in pre season, it'd be
- 32:24more like 5 to 6 * a week doing strength training, but a
- 32:28massive, massive emphasis also on the cardio side of things.
- 32:32And there's a lot on his YouTube of him running.
- 32:34He's not a bad runner, but he does a lot of like elliptical
- 32:37work, a lot of bike work at home because when he's in his
- 32:41offseason, considering, I mean, a bit like a lot of sports at
- 32:45the pro level these days. But he has to chase the winter
- 32:48around the world, be in different places to compete all
- 32:50year round and also to train because where he is at home
- 32:55isn't probably going to have snow straight outside unless he
- 32:57wants to live in the mountains all year round, which you
- 32:59probably don't want to do. So when he is at home, he would
- 33:03want to take a focus away from doing anything that he can't do
- 33:08comfortably. So that's why a lot of that
- 33:11quote UN quote easy stuff would be done then.
- 33:14But he it is a massive focus on building strength.
- 33:17But interestingly, you mentioned there's a lot of the plyometric
- 33:21stuff, but also in some of the movements, which you would
- 33:26typically see in a public gym using a bar, it is unilateral.
- 33:31So you're using kettle bells, You're trying to build the
- 33:33stability and you don't want to lose that.
- 33:35And you don't want to get really good quads from doing quad
- 33:37extension all season long. And then all of a sudden you
- 33:39come along and your legs don't work independently.
- 33:42So that's a, that's a massive, massive focus.
- 33:46And then in the offseason with the skill focus, you can't
- 33:50obviously stop doing that. He is now a level.
- 33:54He's obviously sponsored by Red Bull where one of the things
- 33:59that he didn't have when he first got into the Winter
- 34:01Olympic Games was the money that Sean had.
- 34:03So training wise, it's difficult.
- 34:05He spoke to Sean, you know, what's it like?
- 34:07Because, and I remember watching something about this years ago
- 34:10with Sean White, Shaun White had his own $3,000,000 half pipe in
- 34:14the mountains meant to go and train him.
- 34:17And part of the reason, and this is more context on the sport,
- 34:20it's not just so that he can go and train when he wants.
- 34:24It's because a lot of the time in the offseason and early in
- 34:28the season, riders are learning a run.
- 34:32So because you get given a point system score, so like you're
- 34:35being rate, you're being judged out of 100 across 3 judges and
- 34:38then you get the average, you can go into a season knowing
- 34:44kind of what your perfect score looks like or how to get a
- 34:46really high score. So if you practice those runs
- 34:50and with tolerance for like if I get this kind of pipe or this
- 34:53kind of condition, I'm going to have to do this, then you can
- 34:55come out of your offseason knowing I'm about to pull 5
- 34:59tricks that no one in the world has done before and probably
- 35:01going to be have a pretty good season.
- 35:03So they go away and they work on their runs and if your
- 35:07competitors are able to see what you're doing and they're
- 35:10actually talented enough, they can go.
- 35:12So this is one of the considerations.
- 35:14So Scotty now has access to enough money to be able to have
- 35:18a private half pipe that he uses.
- 35:20That's crazy. And when you've got places
- 35:23around the world, we've obviously got the north and
- 35:24southern hemisphere with different winters, but also
- 35:27there are in the outs, there's glasses, there's glasses all
- 35:30over the world, but you can do glasses skiing all year round,
- 35:32even if you're doing it in shirt, shorts and AT shirt.
- 35:35But Scotty also uses airbags for Major O GS of the podcast, we
- 35:41had Toby on who used to do ski seasons, which is actually How I
- 35:46Met him. But Toby broke his neck on an
- 35:49airbag when it wasn't inflated properly and went through to the
- 35:51concrete underneath. So there are risks with an
- 35:53airbag. It's not all fun and games, but
- 35:55Scottie uses an airbag massively off the halfpipe landing on it
- 36:00and then he can get a pretty good reference of him if he
- 36:02would have landed, because don't forget he's landed so many
- 36:04tricks he knows if he would have landed it.
- 36:06Or not? Is the purpose of that then to
- 36:09reduce the impact of the landing?
- 36:11Or it's just a a different tool to?
- 36:13It's it's both. So like if it's a if it's a
- 36:16sketchy trick. Yeah.
- 36:18I get that, but it's like if it's a trick you've never done
- 36:21before. So if you've been able to do a
- 36:23720 and I go cool, now I'll do a 1080, that's an extra rotation.
- 36:27You want to practice it without the risk of actually because.
- 36:30If I said like, the only way you're going to land A-1080 is
- 36:32by going and doing it, all of a sudden it's like, well, I don't
- 36:34know if I could. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:35So you you build up. It's the same if you've seen
- 36:37when divers learning tricks, they're in a harness and if
- 36:40they, yeah, yeah, I get that. But like the the equivalent is
- 36:43to have an airbag because it's with some of the rotations
- 36:45they're doing, because they're doing I'm I'm not in the
- 36:49knowledge enough to be able to look at someone's trick like the
- 36:51announcers, I don't. Know how I do like make it up 8?
- 36:54Spins upside down, whatever. And they're like, Oh my God, he
- 36:56did Jack the Pony, whatever that is.
- 36:59Yeah. Yeah, But with tail grab.
- 37:01Exactly. And so there's all of these,
- 37:02like, fine refinements that happen in a trick that will get
- 37:06worked through the airbag phase until the confidence is there.
- 37:09Even then, the first time they do it in competition is massive
- 37:12because there's just different pressure.
- 37:14Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:15So I mean, that's, that's also something that we, we need to
- 37:18discuss, right? When it's like he's coming to.
- 37:21And I think you have to, especially in a sport like this,
- 37:24you have to start when you're young, when your brain is, you
- 37:27said he started when he was three and then started competing
- 37:29when he was 6 and then made it pro when he was 11.
- 37:32Like your brain is still really malleable there.
- 37:34So it's like there's less comprehension of fear.
- 37:37And I don't know if you have it as well, but when I was younger
- 37:40and when I started skiing, I was just fearless because I had no
- 37:43like comprehension of if I break my leg, I can't work, therefore
- 37:48I can't make any money. So when I go now, I'm just like,
- 37:51I'm going to go slow. I don't want to fall over.
- 37:53I don't want to hurt myself. It's just like it's not as fun.
- 37:56I don't go as fast. But you, like you've developed
- 37:59that over time. And I think if you, if he hadn't
- 38:01started young, he wouldn't have that that kind of like block to
- 38:05go. I'm going to do like 10 flips in
- 38:07the air and then potentially land on concrete and could like
- 38:09snap my back. Yeah, exactly.
- 38:11You have to start when you're young.
- 38:13One of the things that I think a lot of people kind of not
- 38:17necessarily understand is the aerobic side of his training.
- 38:21So much like what's the necessity?
- 38:22Because typically a run through the pipe probably lasts 30
- 38:27seconds. Maybe you don't need to have the
- 38:29best cardiovascular base to be able to do that.
- 38:31But it's the whole thing that we've spoken a lot about within
- 38:35hierarchs and other sports is the tolerance that your body has
- 38:39to activity. So in the example of him
- 38:43running, how many people do we know, including ourselves, get
- 38:47injured purely from running? The load that running gives on
- 38:50the body. Now, if you compare that to the
- 38:52load that his body needs to take, running is minimal.
- 38:55So running is a very, very good base for his body to be able to
- 38:58say I can handle that, no problem.
- 39:02Therefore, the higher loads are also fine.
- 39:04Whereas if you went from doing really hard snowboarding
- 39:06sessions and taking off and you weren't having the airbag or
- 39:09whatever, and then you went and sat on the sofa for the rest of
- 39:11the day or the rest of the week and you come back to do it
- 39:14again. Your body's not primed for that.
- 39:15Your central nervous system's not going to be able to tolerate
- 39:18the this up and down so easily in that way.
- 39:23But there's another key thing, altitude benefit, because if
- 39:27you're if you've got a better aerobic base, you're going to
- 39:29handle the changes in altitude much better than someone that.
- 39:31It also supports your your strength training and your
- 39:34strength system, your aerobic and your strength.
- 39:36They work very similar together. The only thing that I'm
- 39:39interested in, I don't know if you know this on the top of your
- 39:41head is like obviously the sport he does and the career he's had,
- 39:45he's had injuries. Do you know what any of those
- 39:48injuries have been? So interestingly, it is pretty
- 39:52random for people in extreme sport events because of just the
- 39:55way that you land. His first appearance, the
- 39:58Olympic Games, you said, was 2010.
- 40:00He competed for the broken wrist.
- 40:01Yeah. OK.
- 40:02I was going to say wrist, probably a big one.
- 40:04Wrist is a big one with snowboarding.
- 40:06The benefit that you have with snowboarding over something like
- 40:08skiing is obviously because your feet are strapped in, you're
- 40:11less likely to have knee injuries from twisting.
- 40:13OK, fine. So you do still get them, but
- 40:16like it's far less because. I was going to say of of works
- 40:19with people. I mean, it's, it's, it's still
- 40:21extreme, but it's not really the same thing.
- 40:23But working. They like motor GP riders.
- 40:26And obviously when you crash at high speed, they're going a lot
- 40:29faster off a motorbike. But they, they all have so much
- 40:32metal in their bodies. Yeah.
- 40:33And it's like they avoid running like the plague.
- 40:36So they do a lot of rowing because it's like good for the
- 40:39grip. And when you're racing around a
- 40:41track, all you're doing is pumping the brakes.
- 40:43So you get like unbelievable forearm pump.
- 40:45So rowing is really good for them, skiing as well and a lot
- 40:47of biking. So I'm just interested like if
- 40:50you are getting lower limb injuries frequently and maybe
- 40:52you've got some screws and some plates somewhere, maybe running
- 40:55wouldn't be the best thing. But obviously he's fine with it.
- 40:58But like you said, it's good as well to develop the the
- 41:02tolerance to the impact and the loading of running if you're
- 41:05constantly hitting the deck on a snowball.
- 41:07Exactly. And one of the one of the other
- 41:09things pretty from a logistical standpoint, some back story that
- 41:12we haven't given you that you found particularly interesting
- 41:14so. Connection to Formula One.
- 41:17I always think out the interesting stuff, don't I?
- 41:19So Scotty's brother-in-law is Lance Stroll of Formula One.
- 41:25So he's essentially married into a rather wealthy family as well.
- 41:29But I would argue that he's still probably the most
- 41:31successful athlete in that family now, but he spends a lot
- 41:35of his time in Monaco. I'll let you draw your own
- 41:38connections as to why they would live in Monaco, but he spends a
- 41:41lot of time there, which is obviously right next to the
- 41:42Alps, which is pretty ideal. But he's not there all year
- 41:45round, like we said. And one of the most readily
- 41:47available things whenever you are in the world is to run.
- 41:50So like running can be a really good place for him.
- 41:53Now, if we run through a heavily supported by AI and the
- 41:58information I gave it a rough example of what an offseason
- 42:05program would look like across seven days, day one would be
- 42:08heavy lower body. So a bit like you said, squats,
- 42:11deadlifts, unilateral work, power cleans.
- 42:14In fact, for those of you that are living in the London area
- 42:16listening to this and you know CrossFit Putney, there is a
- 42:18YouTube video of him doing those exact movements at CrossFit
- 42:21Putney. One of the other things that he
- 42:23will do in most of his training sessions, especially out of that
- 42:26video is doing a lot of core work.
- 42:28Again we mentioned about loading up the core to release for the
- 42:31rotation, but like again in absorption I didn't even.
- 42:34Mention that yeah, it's obvious you're.
- 42:36Going to be in so many different positions and and again, how
- 42:40much load can you tolerate when you land is a huge one because
- 42:43you're landing and then you've got in half but maybe 1 1/2
- 42:47seconds before you're in the air again so it's landing absorbing
- 42:50and then throwing it I. Think also like, yeah, the, the,
- 42:53the ability to react and go again, but also like you think
- 42:57of a gymnast who's tumbling and flipping and rolling and
- 43:00somersaulting, how much core work they do.
- 43:03It's obvious that he'd need to feel like proprioception
- 43:06coordination. It's, it's, I mean, it's
- 43:08fascinating to see like the, the, the transfers.
- 43:10So then similar to what you said in terms of recovery as well,
- 43:13there would be some sort of zone to easy work in, in and around
- 43:17that session on on day one, day 2, you'll be looking at more
- 43:21explosive stuff. So a bit more of an emphasis on
- 43:23cleans, a little bit lighter because we've obviously done
- 43:25heavy the day before, a few plyometrics thrown in there and
- 43:30again, managing the load with single leg kind of use.
- 43:34The other reason for it being slightly lighter is because on
- 43:36that this example day is when you would also do some of the
- 43:40technique work. So you might go up to the
- 43:42slopes, you might do some of the work on the airbag.
- 43:45So you really don't want to be overly fatiguing yourself in the
- 43:47morning because then you're actually not able to nail the
- 43:49technique phase later on day three, more of like a recovery,
- 43:55active recovery day. So you'd be doing again, a bit
- 43:57more of your steady run or your bike stuff.
- 43:59Or honestly, some of them really like to do a general cross
- 44:04training fitness session that kind of just takes them away
- 44:06from the sport a little bit. And then one of the lower
- 44:10focuses for someone in a sport like snowboarding, although we
- 44:14did speak about the the broken wrists and that kind of thing,
- 44:17is to prime the upper body and a bit of upper body strength
- 44:19again, just to sort of balance everything off.
- 44:23Day four, kind of back to the speed and power focus.
- 44:25At this point you've given yourself a bit of enough rest.
- 44:28But again, we're still then going back to working on some of
- 44:32the tricks. Sometimes they do them on
- 44:34trampolines. Cool.
- 44:35Some athletes don't like trampolines.
- 44:37There are athletes that have actually broken on trampolines
- 44:41because they they will do it with the board and stuff on.
- 44:44Again, it kind of depends on the complexity, but that's the kind
- 44:47of thing that would look like on maybe Day 4.
- 44:49So with Thursday for on a normal week, Day 5, again, long, easy
- 44:56sort of aerobic work. And then in the evening, because
- 44:59of the types of the type of training you've been doing so
- 45:02far in a week, like mobility is a massive focus.
- 45:04And again, you think about the body position.
- 45:07Oh yeah, you land in sometimes, like, yeah, you've got to be
- 45:10super flexible to not hop joints and that sort of thing with your
- 45:13land. So heavy emphasis on that.
- 45:14Which then leads into day six or the Saturday, which is probably
- 45:19the hardest day of the week because that's where you're kind
- 45:21of trying to combine. It is almost the equivalent of
- 45:25doing a simulation. So you go and do your
- 45:27competitive day where you're actually trying to land the runs
- 45:31over and over and over again. So you'd be doing, I think he
- 45:34mentioned this on the documentary, but he might be up
- 45:36at the pipe on his own for three to four hours at a time.
- 45:39And if you're doing the same run, as we said, takes 30
- 45:42seconds, Yeah, albeit you're going to get, I mean, there's
- 45:44not going to be a lift. You're going to get a Skadoo up.
- 45:47You're probably doing 10 to 15 runs an hour.
- 45:52That's crazy really. So then relatively understood,
- 45:56but Sunday is about mobility, eating well and recovering,
- 45:59getting ready for Monday because you're then back in to do some
- 46:01head air training. So it's.
- 46:03It is fascinating really. And like, I hope if people
- 46:07listen to this and then go and watch the Winter Olympics, it's
- 46:10just an appreciation of like how athletic all of these people
- 46:14are. And like, I know it sounds
- 46:16stupid, like they're all Olympians.
- 46:17They're all competing at the top of their sport for their
- 46:19country. You'd imagine that they're
- 46:21training hard, but you just, you don't put like you don't
- 46:24actually step back and go, well, these people are training all
- 46:28year round. Like that's we've just read
- 46:30through a week. He's doing that every week,
- 46:32every week, every week. And obviously like it sounds
- 46:34really fun and really cool and being a professional athlete is
- 46:37obviously like an amazing opportunity and honour.
- 46:41But yeah, I mean, it's like it's a lot of hard graft in there.
- 46:43The one thing, the one thing I was interested in is like he's
- 46:47doing 32nd bursts on the half pipe and it's like super
- 46:50intense. It is just like interval
- 46:52training. I'd be interested to see if he
- 46:54has any sort of like more VO2 Max or anaerobic Y kind of style
- 46:58intervals chucked in there. So in in the particular YouTube
- 47:02video I mentioned with CrossFit, Putney appearing and.
- 47:04Mecca bike I reckon. You might well do that's not on
- 47:07there. Oh fuck.
- 47:08He was doing some running intervals.
- 47:09OK, fire through I think Regions Park.
- 47:11OK, But yeah, so he he was doing running intervals close to
- 47:15Putney. You'd think Red Bull budget is
- 47:19it. We've got a helicopter.
- 47:21There So no, there's definitely still some VOT routes work in
- 47:25there. Again, just for sort of covering
- 47:27all areas of training and perspective.
- 47:29Now that was, that was more of like a preseason attempted focus
- 47:33in the season. What would reduce is the amount
- 47:36of strength work in the gym. Mobility work will increase
- 47:39quite a lot to help the recovery side of things.
- 47:41Again, they're still easy, probably less long.
- 47:44We're not talking because when you're talking about like the
- 47:46adaptations you get in zone 2 training, you're talking
- 47:49realistically 45 minutes is supposed to be good for like
- 47:52maintaining, starting to push anything over like 75 to 90
- 47:55minutes is where you start to get adaptation.
- 47:57Probably not looking for adaptation so much anymore,
- 47:59probably looking for just maintenance.
- 48:00So half an hour to 45 minutes and then the rest of the time
- 48:04we'll be working skill based a lot more time on the airbag,
- 48:08even though it might be tricks that you think are like pretty
- 48:12easy to land at that point. Just again load management and
- 48:15just. Feel like Grunford finding
- 48:17exactly there must be so much of that in that sport.
- 48:19Because the other thing as well is there's the competitive
- 48:21aspect of the sport is we said it.
- 48:23You could come out of offseason thinking I'm in great shape for
- 48:26a great season because I've got the perfect run.
- 48:28It's going to get me 100 points every time I do it.
- 48:30But then you go in and you see someone else has actually got a
- 48:33slightly better run or is pulling off one of your tricks
- 48:36better than you. Then you need to go away and you
- 48:38need to practice that. And that's that's.
- 48:42It's not actually uncommon in some of his competitions, but in
- 48:45lots of competitions where you have two runs to get your best
- 48:49score in the half pipe, so it's not actually uncommon that you
- 48:52get a victory lap, which he's had once in your first.
- 48:56Runs just so. Because you go last if you're at
- 48:59the top. So if your first runs so good
- 49:01that you are last, if no one beats your score in their second
- 49:04run, then you get a victory lap. You don't even have to do
- 49:06anything. Yeah, but you get back.
- 49:08Two times like to pull off a trick that maybe no one's ever
- 49:11seen before like just go hell Hail Mary and just like see what
- 49:15you've got and I'm. I'm not going to say this with
- 49:18100% confidence, but 99% confidence that the last time I
- 49:23saw, I watched live Shaun White do a gold medal winning run.
- 49:28It might have. It might have been Pyongyang, it
- 49:30might have been the one before that.
- 49:32I didn't know he was competing. So I think recently, I don't
- 49:35think he was Pyongyang, so it might have been the one before.
- 49:37It was 2010. I think he'd already won and
- 49:40instead of doing a victory lap where you just go down high 5
- 49:42everyone and like him, he threaded the first.
- 49:46It was like back 3 Tomahawk, which hadn't been done in the
- 49:49world before, and he just pulled it off.
- 49:50And again, we mentioned there Shaun White enough times his
- 49:56approach or the way that he would lead everyone to believe
- 49:59his approach to training was was I'd go up to the half pipe in
- 50:02the morning and I live by the beach.
- 50:03So I'd fly back to the beach and I'd just surf all afternoon.
- 50:05No way in my training. It like there might be an
- 50:07element of truth to that. I can't believe that you would
- 50:09be as successful as that without some of the the hard.
- 50:11Work if someone's not branded, yeah, if there's someone like
- 50:13this who's also working like seven days a week, but so.
- 50:18To to round this off, one of the things I think is really cool is
- 50:21Scotty is a testament to the work that he puts in.
- 50:24Despite the success that he's had.
- 50:26It's quite evident he is chasing the Olympic gold because
- 50:30honestly it should have been his semi.
- 50:32It's the only thing he hasn't got right.
- 50:34And one of the things that's particularly interesting about
- 50:36this Winter Olympic Games, he's obviously back.
- 50:39We said what we said about having a good offseason.
- 50:42He won the world champs in 2025. Yeah, he's in a good spot.
- 50:47He's on good form, yeah. He just needs to now get it over
- 50:49the life, Yeah. And it's like that my favorite
- 50:52example ever, the Rory Macro at the Masters.
- 50:55Is this his master's? Is this the one where he's like,
- 50:57he's always going to butcher it because he's he's putting that
- 51:00external pressure on him? So I hope not like after this I
- 51:03I want to go away and watch the half by I watch him like
- 51:05absolutely. Really, I'm so excited for this
- 51:07when joining the games, I'm going to be unbearable.
- 51:09I said we might really is coming into every episode for sure, but
- 51:12I, I. Think also on this point, like
- 51:14for me, for a long time in my coaching career, the one thing I
- 51:17wanted to do was like sports specific SNC and like my main
- 51:20goal was like America and working with football players.
- 51:23But it's like for me, it's just problem solving.
- 51:25You like this is what I'm doing and training for what Use your
- 51:29knowledge and your skills and your like your understanding of
- 51:32the movement and the movement patterns and the mechanics and
- 51:34create a program that's going to make me good.
- 51:36And it's like even in like a minute, I can think of some
- 51:39things that are going to be helpful to make someone good at
- 51:41snowboarding. And I've never coached anyone
- 51:43how to snowboard before. So it's like, I'd love to know
- 51:45who is S&C coaches or if he does it himself, whether or not he's
- 51:49got the experience now to do it himself and program for himself.
- 51:51I'm sure he has a trainer, He's got enough money, but it's like,
- 51:55yeah, it's it's it's wild to think that there's like a Team
- 51:57GB snowboarding SNC coach, but that's a job that no one ever
- 52:01expects. Yeah, but it's yeah, it's
- 52:03fascinating. So two things.
- 52:05One thing to add a slight spice to the fact that he's, you know,
- 52:08going to be a hopeful this year for the gold medal.
- 52:10He's currently ranked 4th in the world like Cup so far.
- 52:15So he's still up there, but he's not running away with it.
- 52:18It's going to be an interesting competition.
- 52:20And the other thing, just to remind you all that when I've
- 52:23told you his program, he has not given it to me.
- 52:26We have read between the lines of about 8 different sources and
- 52:29pulled it all together. So don't take it as gospel, but
- 52:33I wouldn't be surprised if it was pretty similar to that for
- 52:36him to be able to manage what he does for a career.
- 52:38I'm keen in the future though with this because this is
- 52:41something we'd like to explore a little bit more on IS even if
- 52:45you have an athlete as an example of like some crazy, I
- 52:48mean, it doesn't necessarily have to be a crazy sport, but
- 52:49any sort of sport. Let us know.
- 52:52I'd like to do what we've done here and kind of piece together
- 52:55a program. I'll go away.
- 52:57I'll create what is a good program and.
- 52:59They'll see if those we get. Yeah, yeah.
- 53:01Yeah, yeah, I like it. Might just completely
- 53:02embarrassed me or. Present the athlete.
- 53:04Yeah, I. Think that would be really so
- 53:05if. If if you are an athlete that
- 53:08you think has got a pretty interesting program, then let us
- 53:11know if you know of an athlete you'd love to know more about
- 53:13that program. I mean, you don't want to go and
- 53:15do the research. That's what we're in for.
- 53:17So send it in and I'm more than happy to go away.
- 53:19I'll give Charles the homework of going and figuring it out,
- 53:23and then we'll come back together and we'll see who's
- 53:25right and we'll learn maybe what they could be doing better.
- 53:28Maybe if they had you as a coach.
- 53:30This is a crazy turn for your career.
- 53:32Yeah. My CV is going to be
- 53:33unbelievable. If you generally enjoyed this
- 53:36sign of thing, like I, I've already just said there, make
- 53:38sure you write an app mindsets under score podcast on
- 53:41Instagram. It's probably the best place to
- 53:42send us a message, but you can comment on the YouTube video.
- 53:45You can comment on Spotify if you want to just put it
- 53:49somewhere and then we can reply to you and we'll get back to you
- 53:52and, and hope that we can carry this forward because I think I,
- 53:55I've really found this interesting putting this
- 53:57together. I like learning about the
- 53:58differences between different athletes because there is a lot
- 54:01of similarities in some of their training.
- 54:03There's also a major amount of differences, and that's also
- 54:05athlete to athlete. We understand.
- 54:07So yeah, it's so specific to the person as well, yeah.
- 54:09And we're fortunate enough to know we we know a few different
- 54:12athletes, so we will hopefully get some of those guys and girls
- 54:15on and they can break down their training in front of.
- 54:17Us. Yeah, yeah, that would be really
- 54:18fascinating. So I think that's hopefully more
- 54:21of that to come unless you really don't like it.
- 54:25But that takes us into the final part, which has been prepared by
- 54:29you, this. Yeah, I'm so.
- 54:30I'm now a little bit nervous. I'm on games youth in two weeks.
- 54:33I've not. I know I, I, I think I've been,
- 54:35I think I've been relatively kind with the game, but I think
- 54:38it's quite fun. It's it follows a similar feat
- 54:40theme to what we've been doing over the last couple of weeks.
- 54:43Again, it's got a name. I've called it who won?
- 54:48OK, which? Who?
- 54:50Yeah. So all you need to do is tell me
- 54:52who won. It might be an athlete, it might
- 54:54be a sports team. There's some bonus questions as
- 54:57well. To.
- 54:58Get even more points. I think there's 11 questions
- 55:01total, but then there's some extra points in bonus.
- 55:04We're just going to dive in. OK, well just to just to
- 55:07clarify, if you beat me, comment your score.
- 55:10OK, versus mine. You've got to love that.
- 55:12All right, so I'm going to take you back to Wimbledon last year.
- 55:16Yeah, 2025. Who won the women's singles at
- 55:20Wimbledon 2025? If you have historically
- 55:26listened to the podcast, you know that my name basis is
- 55:31awful. You're going to say Amerada
- 55:33Carney? No, I'm not going to say Amerada
- 55:34Carney. I wouldn't have remembered her
- 55:35name. No offence again if she's
- 55:38listening to this one again. You have to go back to that.
- 55:40Episode The thing is the top three women, and I mentioned one
- 55:44of them last week in last week's episode, but I have forgotten
- 55:48all three of their names. It's also a really difficult
- 55:52name, like it's quite hard to pronounce.
- 55:57I think it this might have been swayed by Radicalani, but I
- 56:00think it begins with an RP. Neither, neither.
- 56:06OK, great. I'm going to have to take an L.
- 56:09It's not going to come. Eager Shiv on deck?
- 56:13I wouldn't have gone, no. She would take.
- 56:15Shame. That's tough.
- 56:17OK, tough stuff that was. I think that was a hard 1
- 56:19though. I think that's.
- 56:20Hard I should know that I think. That was a hard one.
- 56:22You're being too nice. All right, the NBA Championship
- 56:262025. Who won?
- 56:30Was it? It's way better being in this
- 56:34position. To ask the questions.
- 56:36Oh, it's fun. I can see the teams.
- 56:40He's going to say to no one. I can see the person's feel.
- 56:43Yeah, yeah, I'll try not to say that.
- 56:45The thing is, and this will tell you whether or not I'm getting
- 56:48the right team. It was Shaun White.
- 56:50Did Russell Westbrook play a large amount of his career for
- 56:53them? Don't ask me that.
- 56:54Don't ask me other questions that I don't know.
- 56:56I'm not being quizzed. Was it?
- 57:01Oh, Oklahoma, Yes, I've forgotten the rest of them.
- 57:05I'm. Giving you that?
- 57:05Yeah, it's. The Thunders.
- 57:06Yeah. The Thunders.
- 57:07Yeah, Yeah. Well done.
- 57:08Thank you. Good job.
- 57:09And for those that do know, basketball, yes.
- 57:11Russell Westbrook didn't spend a lot of his time, though.
- 57:14Well, I knew that. I just couldn't give you.
- 57:15Yeah, yeah, yeah. OK, cool.
- 57:17Women's Rugby World Cup 2025. Who won?
- 57:22England? Easy, easy, easy.
- 57:24Don't, don't double, double. Get.
- 57:26OK. Premier League, the 2425 season.
- 57:29Who won? What's that?
- 57:35See, I know that Chelsea won the Premier League in 2005, so I'm
- 57:38going to go ahead and say it was Chelsea.
- 57:40No 202425 What did I say? I think I I heard 2000 and four
- 57:452000 and. Five, I may have said that.
- 57:47OK, but that's not what I was asking.
- 57:48Surely I get a point. That's what he said.
- 57:50We're going to. That is for a 2425.
- 57:53Yeah. Liverpool, Yeah.
- 57:54Easy. Yeah, I.
- 57:55Was like why is he taking so long to get that?
- 57:57OK, it's the first one with a bonus point.
- 57:59I'm going to ask you the first question 1st and then there's a
- 58:01bonus point. The British Open Golf 2025.
- 58:07Who won? There's a good little docu
- 58:10series on on YouTube about this. You send that to me, my
- 58:16knowledge needs propping up. It's.
- 58:18It's an easy one. The guy's the the goat at the
- 58:21moment is. It Bryson.
- 58:23No. He he, he played.
- 58:27Really well, he played like a if he'd if he'd played the same way
- 58:30he did on on Sunday as the rest of the weekend, he'd like
- 58:33blasted everyone. But he had a tough start.
- 58:37It's not going to be Rory. No.
- 58:40Is it Jon Rahm? No.
- 58:42No. Who was it?
- 58:43Scotty Scheffler was it? Yeah, the chef Scotty.
- 58:46So the bonus point, where was it held?
- 58:49Do you know the course? It was a big one for Rory, which
- 58:57would imply it was, and the last time it was here, Shane Lowry
- 59:01won. Which is massive as well.
- 59:03Which was one of the greatest weekends ever.
- 59:06Ireland. It was in Northern Ireland.
- 59:09Yeah. I'm not giving you that.
- 59:10It was really naughty. Do you want me to tell?
- 59:15You Don Don Donald. No port rush, which is a
- 59:19stunning link. I've never.
- 59:20Played that one on track, don't you?
- 59:22I don't know that one. On the Tiger Woods, Yeah, yeah.
- 59:26Yeah. We don't need to mention that.
- 59:29OK, let's go stateside. Who won the MLB in 2025?
- 59:35Major League Baseball. I can see that.
- 59:41I just can't. Yeah, she can.
- 59:46Oh, there's no way I'd have got this.
- 59:47Was it the Cubs? No, no, Was it?
- 59:49I can't even remember if they're called Blue Jays, but.
- 59:53A good colour. Choice.
- 59:54Is it a blue bird? Is the logo?
- 59:56No. OK, but I think that.
- 59:58Blue. Then no.
- 1:00:00The Dodgers. LA Dodgers.
- 1:00:01Really. Yeah.
- 1:00:02Oh, I didn't know the Dodgers won it.
- 1:00:03OK, fair enough. I'm thinking.
- 1:00:07I'm thinking a year before that was a team that hadn't won it.
- 1:00:09Maybe historically. I really sure they have a blue
- 1:00:13bird as that logo. The Bluebirds.
- 1:00:15Yeah. The Bluebirds.
- 1:00:17Yeah. Sick.
- 1:00:17Yeah. Cool.
- 1:00:18Nice. Good chat.
- 1:00:20OK, this one who won the British Grand Prix 2025?
- 1:00:29God, that is actually no, not tough.
- 1:00:32Landon Norris. Yeah, easy.
- 1:00:33Easy one. OK, who won the Six Nations
- 1:00:362025? Why is that from out of my head?
- 1:00:44What? By the end of this year, we're
- 1:00:46going to be so good at sport trivia, yeah.
- 1:00:49I'm hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 1:00:53It wasn't definitely wasn't Wales.
- 1:00:57It wasn't Scotland. It obviously wasn't Italy
- 1:01:01either. They are taking part.
- 1:01:05No, I'm not as much as Wales then we've got.
- 1:01:07France. Yeah, true.
- 1:01:08Not that year, France, England. I don't think it was England.
- 1:01:14We're pretty fucking good. We should win it this year.
- 1:01:19I don't think it was Ireland. No, it was Ireland.
- 1:01:21It was Ireland. France.
- 1:01:23Fuck. Damn it.
- 1:01:25Damn, I really thought we did something to Ireland.
- 1:01:28Oh, did we beat Ireland in the last weekend?
- 1:01:30The men France won. We know I I don't think that
- 1:01:32there was something around Ireland.
- 1:01:34So sure. Yeah.
- 1:01:35No, we're, we're good this year. Yeah, we're we should win it
- 1:01:38this year, OK. Who won the Women's Six Nations
- 1:01:432025? Was it not England again?
- 1:01:47It was England. OK, bonus points on this one.
- 1:01:50How many have they now won in a row?
- 1:01:53Six Nations or competitions? 6.
- 1:01:56Nations. Six Nations.
- 1:01:57They have won five in a row. Seven since 2019, I.
- 1:02:02Knew it was a lot. And in each of those, they've
- 1:02:06won the Triple Crown. So that's beating all of the
- 1:02:09home nations and the Grand Slam. Tell me a more dominant team.
- 1:02:13Than that. That is a joke.
- 1:02:15Have you noticed in this quiz I've actually been better at the
- 1:02:18women's? I've started to switch.
- 1:02:19I'm moving over to women's. School joke at how dominant they
- 1:02:22are anyway. OK, easy one for you.
- 1:02:25Who won the women's Elite 15 major in Phoenix?
- 1:02:30Joanna Vietrick. Easy.
- 1:02:31Bonus point for her time. 56 minutes and three seconds.
- 1:02:35The guy's a loser. Bonus bonus point.
- 1:02:39Who came second? Am I missing something here?
- 1:02:45No, I was just asking you again second.
- 1:02:47Lauren Weeks. Yeah, yeah, OK, cool.
- 1:02:50I thought you were going to turn up.
- 1:02:51No, she got that second penalty. Bonus, bonus, bonus.
- 1:02:53OK, OK, who won the most medals at the OK, which nation I should
- 1:03:00say? OK, which nation won the most
- 1:03:02medals at the 2022 Winter Olympics?
- 1:03:10I obviously just want to jump to what's seemingly the most
- 1:03:13obvious. Sorry for stalling, everybody
- 1:03:22listening. I'm going to go ahead.
- 1:03:24I'm just going to go with the brain.
- 1:03:26America. US.
- 1:03:28It's not, unfortunately. Can I Can I have a second game?
- 1:03:31Is it something more rogue? China's always up there with the
- 1:03:35Summer Olympics, but I'm going to go away from them and save
- 1:03:38Japan. No.
- 1:03:39OK. Norway.
- 1:03:42Norway. I see that again.
- 1:03:43Look at all the events of the Olympics with like, speed
- 1:03:45skating, Nordic combined, and may contribute to your reminder.
- 1:03:49That's crazy. Yeah, that kind of makes sense.
- 1:03:52I'll give you a bonus point if you can tell me where that
- 1:03:56Winter Olympics was in 2022. We've said it enough times
- 1:03:59already today. Yeah, of course I can.
- 1:04:03Beijing. Yeah, Easy.
- 1:04:04OK. This is the final one.
- 1:04:07Bonus. Bonus point, Yeah, For how many
- 1:04:10gold medals Norway have won accumulatively across every
- 1:04:15single Winter Olympics? How many I'm giving?
- 1:04:18You a code? OK, there's been a Winter
- 1:04:21Olympics every four years since 1924.
- 1:04:26So you've just crossed 100 years?
- 1:04:27I think the first one was in Chamoni.
- 1:04:30OK, that's that's fun fact. Don't quote me on it, actually.
- 1:04:34So how many gold medals? Norway.
- 1:04:37Just for Norway. Just for Norway, the most
- 1:04:39dominant winter sport nation ever so.
- 1:04:43Wait, what? Year was it started 1924.
- 1:04:47That's interesting because we've we've lost two years.
- 1:04:52Would that have been? No, we didn't even lose 2 years
- 1:04:54over COVID. So we lost two years at some
- 1:04:56point, maybe the war. Yeah, it was.
- 1:04:57I think so. There was, though.
- 1:04:58That's a good shout. There's a block.
- 1:05:00On. Yeah, I'm thinking, I'm thinking
- 1:05:02that we probably lost. That was one or two.
- 1:05:05Yeah, yeah. That's a flex.
- 1:05:09Autism, yeah. So we've got, we've got one or
- 1:05:13two that we've missed. Let's say then, OK, we've got 22
- 1:05:19Winter Olympics, let's say they average out at 15.
- 1:05:27I'm going to. Be really impressed.
- 1:05:31Let's say 327 for fun. That's quite high.
- 1:05:43Is it? That is quite high when you
- 1:05:45think about it. That's quite high, yeah, 3. 127
- 1:05:48across 100 years. You want to have another guess?
- 1:05:52Yeah. Thanks.
- 1:05:54Let's not use brain. Let's use the athletic feel,
- 1:05:57yeah? Yeah, nice knowing that.
- 1:05:59That was way too high. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:01I'm going to go ahead and I'll say 113. 148 that's that's, I
- 1:06:12mean, it's a stupid question, like it's a hard question.
- 1:06:14No, that's tough, though I think I've given you the same with.
- 1:06:16There's been Zealing somewhere at some point.
- 1:06:18For Team GB. So yeah, fair enough.
- 1:06:20I did give you a multiple choice, but it's fine.
- 1:06:23Yeah, but you're far, far clever.
- 1:06:24As long as as long as you put it C, that would have been fine.
- 1:06:28I don't even know how. Many I got like I lost count,
- 1:06:31but we'll we'll do it I. Feel like you got more than me.
- 1:06:33Count up your score and win, yeah?
- 1:06:35If you aren't even counting, you feel like you got.
- 1:06:37More, I've just thought of two very interesting things that we
- 1:06:41didn't mention in the news, so just want to touch on them
- 1:06:43quickly. Nice.
- 1:06:46First of all, new world record. Yeah.
- 1:06:49For VO2 Max Oh. How did we miss that?
- 1:06:53I know the Norwegian thing got me that.
- 1:06:55Needs to be a whole episode for sure.
- 1:06:57Yeah, maybe. Maybe.
- 1:06:59How's this for a presentation? Get him on.
- 1:07:01Yeah, we'll have a look at his training.
- 1:07:05Perfect. And we'll go through.
- 1:07:06Here's one. Here's Max.
- 1:07:07So for context and I felt really dumb for some reason in my head
- 1:07:11there was a limit of 100 being your BO2 Max.
- 1:07:14It's not it's not out of 100, it's just a world record.
- 1:07:17Even the time it was 96.1 however it has just been
- 1:07:20absolutely smashed. 101 it's. Just.
- 1:07:22I'm not going to try and with my name recalling Nail, his name,
- 1:07:27which is a Norwegian name as well, so it can only go wrong
- 1:07:30for me. I'll come back to you next
- 1:07:31episode potentially with that as a case study and his name nailed
- 1:07:35in pronunciation and we'll go through maybe what his training
- 1:07:37looks like. That's the first one.
- 1:07:39First of all, just while. Also, there's like a handful of
- 1:07:42people who have ever been in the 90s.
- 1:07:44Yeah, it's, it's like. Superior.
- 1:07:46Like, super, super, super superior.
- 1:07:47It's like plus 80. And then there's like a handful
- 1:07:50in the 90s. And for this guy, Kristen
- 1:07:52Blumenfeld, yeah. OK, that was a place A. 101 was
- 1:07:57it 101? But was it like it wasn't even
- 1:08:00I'm posting this to say how good I am.
- 1:08:02Wasn't it just like? It was just.
- 1:08:04It was just. And someone had like zoomed in
- 1:08:05and gone. Holy shit.
- 1:08:07Yeah, yeah. That's even more.
- 1:08:08Of a flex. The guy's a freak.
- 1:08:10Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:08:11So that's one. And one of the things that I've
- 1:08:14got off the back of it, which I was going to mention earlier on.
- 1:08:16I think I've mentioned recently I've been struggling training
- 1:08:21wise, been taking it a little bit easier, trying to ease my
- 1:08:23way back in because of work and all of that.
- 1:08:26Well the big issue was that I just didn't have a written out
- 1:08:28structure and so by having a written out programme I've
- 1:08:31actually been doing a much better training week.
- 1:08:33However, stray back into the annoyances of what training
- 1:08:37looks like and if this is a particular point in your
- 1:08:40training you're listening to this.
- 1:08:41I'm thinking my training is not linear.
- 1:08:43Listen to this. My watch didn't track my VO2 Max
- 1:08:49across the whole of January and I it's not right.
- 1:08:51I've not put a mask on and done anything hard.
- 1:08:53But my VO2 Max the last time it measured was mid November and it
- 1:08:57said 56. Not unhappy about it not flexing
- 1:09:00about it on Instagram. I haven't run that often so that
- 1:09:05when I did a run to the gym today, gone to the gym VO2 Max
- 1:09:1152. It's gone down a lot.
- 1:09:13That's not good, however. You ran for what?
- 1:09:16Like I. Ran for 2/2 and a bit K there
- 1:09:18and ran 2 and a bit K back. What I will say is very
- 1:09:21interesting. I for me and for some people
- 1:09:24listening this might be really good, but for me this is a bit
- 1:09:27of an alarming situation. 5 minutes, 46 average.
- 1:09:30What was my average heart? Rate I should actually know
- 1:09:33because I saw your stronger. 540-6546.
- 1:09:38I'm going to say. 3 flat as. Well, 1:58. 1:45 I get it for
- 1:09:46one of them, slightly higher for them on the way to the gym, but
- 1:09:49just for reference, that would normally have been like 120 to
- 1:09:54125 Max. I'm I'm I've never been like my
- 1:09:58running training has always been less than my bike training,
- 1:10:00especially in the last year. But just for the flip side, and
- 1:10:03this is where I'm saying the training isn't linear.
- 1:10:05So I really struggled to keep my heart rate there running what
- 1:10:10felt almost I was walking slow. Yeah, yesterday I was on a bike
- 1:10:14for an hour and 15 minutes. I held 240 watts for an hour and
- 1:10:1715 minutes and I was struggling to stay in zone 2 instead of
- 1:10:20dropping into zone 1. My HRV.
- 1:10:23Is this on your bike? Yeah, but I've checked the
- 1:10:27calibration and for output versus AC2 and the difference is
- 1:10:32that is supposedly on my 10th 2 months ago, 5 what's less, but
- 1:10:37yesterday I was. That's impressive.
- 1:10:40Really mentally struggling with putting out what I needed to on
- 1:10:42my legs. And before you ask, I was
- 1:10:45wearing a chest strap. OK Polar H10 it was legit but I
- 1:10:50I you can see on the graph I'm bouncing between 1:16 which is
- 1:10:54where my cut off is for zone 2 training.
- 1:10:56I was bouncing between that and 1:00 to 1:00 the entire time.
- 1:11:00For 240 watts, that's good. But as soon as I started
- 1:11:05thinking about high rolt racing. Spike, but yeah, yeah, straight
- 1:11:08up to be like, whoa, OK, stop. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:10It's crazy that happens that happens to meet all the time.
- 1:11:12You get like over simulated. Yeah, it's it's really
- 1:11:14fascinating, which we should do because I don't know what your
- 1:11:17training looks like at the moment.
- 1:11:18I'd be interested to, like, I'm trying to show you what it is,
- 1:11:21map out what your training looks like without having seen it.
- 1:11:23Yeah. Or at least we can discuss what
- 1:11:25our training looks like at the moment, because that might be of
- 1:11:27interest to some people, or probably not.
- 1:11:28If if people want to know what we look like, then you can see
- 1:11:31and we'll compare that to. Because usually, usually my
- 1:11:33training is so pathetic and I do nothing.
- 1:11:36But at the moment my training is really good.
- 1:11:38So it's like, yeah, yeah, it's, it'd be a good opportunity for
- 1:11:40us to actually like, have a snapshot of what like good
- 1:11:43training looks like for us. OK, cool.
- 1:11:44And then the just around the podcast off with some news.
- 1:11:47Obviously we have to go down a rabbit hole at some point.
- 1:11:50If you're watching this on the week that it comes out, then
- 1:11:55biggest news if you don't pay attention to American sport is.
- 1:11:58That he loves it. Super Bowl champions this year
- 1:12:02are are the Seattle Seahawks, the 29 to 13 win over the New
- 1:12:05England Patriots. So that's a.
- 1:12:07Surprise. But yeah, I mean, Patriots back
- 1:12:11in the Super Bowl and every other team had their chance to
- 1:12:14get in there before the Patriots return.
- 1:12:16But there they are. And Seahawks, another big game.
- 1:12:19I think I mentioned in one of the previous episodes that it
- 1:12:21was lining up to just be a rerun of the, I think the first Super
- 1:12:25Bowl I ever watched. Was Brady playing for the
- 1:12:27Patriots? Yeah, yeah, and iconic it was
- 1:12:31when they decided to throw a pass on the 1 yard line on the 1
- 1:12:36yard line rather than giving it to Marshall and Lynch.
- 1:12:38Wow. Yeah, I would have bet my life
- 1:12:42to win. They had to score to win.
- 1:12:45But but. They decided.
- 1:12:46Marshawn Lynch, who had been running and it was, he was one
- 1:12:50of the players for people who don't know he wasn't on the
- 1:12:53field. Oh really?
- 1:12:54No, I mean it was offence. Fire service and Seahawks.
- 1:12:57Yes, and Seahawks. Were on the field, Marshawn
- 1:12:59Lynch, 1 yard line. He was in form and good enough.
- 1:13:03There was like, it's a touchdown, we know you're
- 1:13:06running it, but he's going to score anyway.
- 1:13:09And they decided to pass and they threw an inception anyway.
- 1:13:13Yeah. So Super Bowl champions.
- 1:13:14That's good. And yeah, so that kind of brings
- 1:13:18us to the end of that episode. If you enjoyed it, we've asked
- 1:13:21you enough times, but make sure you do actually get in touch.
- 1:13:23If we mentioned something that has ground your gears a little
- 1:13:26bit or reminded you of something that has been grinding your
- 1:13:29gears recently, make sure you send it in.
- 1:13:31We're always taking requests. We're going to be better at
- 1:13:33putting up more stories asking for them.
- 1:13:36But anytime something annoys you, let us be your vent and
- 1:13:39we'll include it in the next episode.
- 1:13:41With or without your name. That is your choice, Charles.
- 1:13:43Anything else from you? No, I hope you enjoyed it.
- 1:13:47Cool. If the bozo from Pure Gym is
- 1:13:51listening to this, don't. Otherwise, I hope the rest of
- 1:13:54you have a lovely, lovely week and I look forward to seeing you
- 1:13:57all in the next episode.
