- 0:13SPEAKER_00: It's too many men on the mic.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Presented by vintage credit by Netfront LLC production.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Now here's Coach Will and Coach Darrow.
- 0:34SPEAKER_06: It's too many men on the mic.
- 0:35SPEAKER_06: Thursday, September, the third edition.
- 0:39SPEAKER_03: No frost on the pumpkins yet.
- 0:41SPEAKER_06: Oh my gosh.
- 0:42SPEAKER_06: And it's like a furnace in St.
- 0:44SPEAKER_06: Louis.
- 0:45SPEAKER_06: If you're anywhere in the Midwest right now, you're feeling it.
- 0:49SPEAKER_06: You know, it's those days where maybe you'll take a shower, or maybe you won't.
- 0:54SPEAKER_06: Or maybe you'll just put a hat on, right?
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: For those of you listening at home, yes, we've donned the hats.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: Nah, it's it's it's brutal outside.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: It's almost like, you know, we went from this phenomen.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: I mean, August was weird when we had rain, we had like 60 degree mornings and 70 degree afternoons, which is not St.
- 1:19SPEAKER_03: Louis.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: And then boom, September hits, and we are here we are.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: And I feel like uh um it's like a I'm like, I'm like, I'm so sweet like ice cream, I'm gonna melt.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's just how it is.
- 1:33SPEAKER_06: No, it's it's is that a new ism?
- 1:35SPEAKER_06: You just came up with it.
- 1:35SPEAKER_06: I just came up.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: That was one on the fly.
- 1:39SPEAKER_06: I don't feel like that one was worked out.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, speaking of isms though, we've got uh we've got tryouts tomorrow for Ledue High School hockey.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: There's tryouts going around the area for for all of high school hockey.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, we had just there's this, there's we're we're building to that crescendo.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: There's a there's a word, crescendo, um, to where you know we're gonna we're gonna have real practices, not summer skates, not development skates, real practices, real high-level compete.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: There's always always a kid that comes out of the woodwork for every school, and you're like, holy cow, where did this kid come from?
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: Or when did this kid decide that he or she wanted to be a hockey player and not just play hockey?
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: And that's what I'm most excited about.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: I think it starts tomorrow.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: I've got a couple, a couple kids on my radar.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: I'm sure you do too.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, this is this is go time here.
- 2:28SPEAKER_03: And and we got college football starting.
- 2:30SPEAKER_06: Well, I had it, I had a little bit of a tease.
- 2:32SPEAKER_06: I had a uh out-of-town tournament weekend last weekend and uh got a little bit of a taste of it.
- 2:39SPEAKER_06: And after playing two friendlies uh where both teams looked like they hadn't played a hockey game in four months because they hadn't, we went out of town, we looked like a unit, uh, and we played some really good hockey.
- 2:54SPEAKER_06: And so it's it's here.
- 2:56SPEAKER_06: How'd that tournament end for you guys?
- 2:59SPEAKER_06: It went fantastic.
- 3:01SPEAKER_06: Uh uh, we we walked away uh undefeated on the weekend, which is always great.
- 3:07SPEAKER_06: You know, hockey costs a lot of money.
- 3:09SPEAKER_06: We spent a lot of time and energy, uh, the kids especially putting in the work.
- 3:14SPEAKER_06: And so it's great to be rewarded when you go out of town and uh and you can come home and and have a successful weekend.
- 3:21SPEAKER_03: So did the uh parents did some of the parents get after it in the lobby?
- 3:25unknown: Oh, yeah.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: Not that I want to bury the lead.
- 3:27SPEAKER_03: I'm just asking.
- 3:28SPEAKER_06: How was the first how was the first how was the first tournament?
- 3:32SPEAKER_06: So I uh no stories, no like stories that are gonna live through seasons and seasons.
- 3:38SPEAKER_06: So we're still knocking the rust off in the parent department.
- 3:41SPEAKER_06: Uh the parent lobbying will get strong here as the as the next couple weeks go along, uh, and that'll factor into uh I think our show here today.
- 3:51SPEAKER_06: It could, it very well could as we move along.
- 3:53SPEAKER_06: So I'm not gonna we'll revisit that uh a little bit later, but um but we got a fun show today.
- 4:01SPEAKER_06: Uh we've been talking about Paddell and pickleball, I feel like the last two or three weeks of two sports uh that uh are relevant to youth hockey players.
- 4:14SPEAKER_06: And I feel like we've kind of highlighted for the audience why that's a good option to consider uh when you're not on the ice.
- 4:22SPEAKER_06: But today we're talking about uh uh uh something exciting, the hockey guys.
- 4:28SPEAKER_06: And these are guys that I mean during COVID, think back to what you were doing during COVID.
- 4:34SPEAKER_06: I know exactly what happened.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: I was playing pickleball in front of my house.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: You were drawing pickleball course lines on your driveway.
- 4:43SPEAKER_06: Uh we were uh quote working until about three o'clock, at least in my neighborhood, until we started seeing our neighbors walking around uh for their afternoon siesta walk, uh usually with their Yeti in their hand.
- 4:58SPEAKER_06: And uh that became a daily routine.
- 5:01SPEAKER_06: But the hockey guys uh around that time were at uh uh at Superior, uh, so University of Wisconsin Superior.
- 5:11SPEAKER_06: Yep, and they were exiting college life and I think thinking about going off on their own and doing something uh that most of us would say were aligned with what some people might say a quote professional job.
- 5:26SPEAKER_06: Started making TikTok videos and blew up.
- 5:30SPEAKER_06: And so suddenly now they are a brand machine, they are a social media machine, so much so that they don't even need to think about that college education and getting a quote professional job.
- 5:41SPEAKER_06: They can continue to talk about hockey and loving those things.
- 5:44SPEAKER_06: So I'm excited to have uh Austin Friesen from the hockey guys onto the too many men on the mic show tonight.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: Well, and I think most of our audience under the age of 25 knows who these folks are, but for those of the over 25, you know, they've got over 1.5 million followers uh and tens of millions of like on their TikTok channel, alongside a very active Instagram, I think over 300,000 followers and likes, impressions.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: And so I'm I it's not very often I get to sit down and like like be a novice and learn from a master, but I'm hopeful that as we talk to Austin and really not not only hear his personal story, but you know, the impetus behind the hockey guys and how that branding has that's two words by the way, impetus and crescendo.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: Um, how they have like just grown.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: I'm so excited.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: Here he is, ladies and gentlemen, Austin Freesen.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: What's going on, Austin?
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Thanks for joining.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Hey, thanks for the uh the warm, warm welcome and intro.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: That was uh very nice of you guys, but uh excited to be here.
- 6:44SPEAKER_06: Austin, I just have to ask, uh, do you in your day-to-day life with the hockey guys crew, do you guys use words like impetus and crescendo?
- 6:53SPEAKER_06: Uh, we like to highlight big words whenever somebody throws them out on the show.
- 6:57SPEAKER_06: Do you guys throw out big words when you're uh talking as a group?
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: Oof, you know, I can't say I've heard those two words.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: Uh maybe I will take those, put that in your back pocket, use those use them straight when when it comes out, and and I just I all credit comes to me on the content.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think we might need uh sneak those in there.
- 7:16SPEAKER_06: Uh choose your moment and deliver them to your peers.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, yeah.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: No, they uh we we keep the language pretty basic.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: We we don't even we we throw in the hockey slang, you know, when we can, but uh for the most part, we don't overdo it on that end either.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: So yeah, you can only say the word beauty so often, right?
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: Well, Austin man, um, great thanks for for joining.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: We've been talking now for almost a month and getting to know each other uh away from uh away from the show.
- 7:53SPEAKER_03: And you know, obviously we're gonna talk a little bit about a business venture later on, but you know, you're uh you know, you you're one of these these of the guys here, one of the crew, but talk a little bit about like you know the lead up, what brought you to you know Wisconsin Superior.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: Tell us a little bit about hockey and the impact it had on your life growing up and why you've been able to kind of parlay that into you know some some great revenue and almost you know great career.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, one thing I'd like to kind of kick off from the start is uh you never know where your hockey journey is gonna lead, where maybe you make a certain team or you get cut from a certain team and you end up somewhere else or traded, wherever.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: Uh your path is gonna lead you down somewhere.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: And uh where mine led was uh Wisconsin Superior, and that's where my whole friend group actually met each other.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: So that's kind of where my hockey journey ended, but or ended, but then opened up another journey.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: But uh throughout the years I played, so I'm from Winnipeg, I played uh in Canada most of my life growing up, and uh you know, I played junior hockey and AAA and kind of did all that stuff in Manitoba, but I was always kind of looking for more in a different setting.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: And you know, hockey is an amazing sport where you could travel all over the place and kind of find a home wherever that uh can fit you.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: So uh at my last year of junior hockey, I ended up going down to the NAHL and played for uh the Johnstown Tomahawks, and that was uh that was one of my favorite years of hockey ever.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: That uh their rink is actually where Slapshot was filmed.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so they had the Slapshot Museum inside the rink, and uh there's so much hockey history in that town.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: So that uh that was a very special year for me.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: And then uh that's kind of where uh so that was my 20-year-old year of junior, and that's where I got recruited to go to uh the University of Wisconsin Superior, and uh that decision right there changed literally my entire life of uh going to that school where I met these certain people, and then together we uh created something, and now it's still going um six years later after we started.
- 10:22SPEAKER_06: That's fantastic.
- 10:23SPEAKER_06: I love it.
- 10:24SPEAKER_06: I I I have to ask, since you uh since that was your home rink, uh did you put the foil on?
- 10:30SPEAKER_06: Was that a was that a game in, game out while you were there, and did everybody put the foil on or just a handful of guys?
- 10:39SPEAKER_06: How did that work?
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Uh well, there wasn't wasn't too too much foil going on, but let's just say the fans certainly uh loved the action just like they did in the movie there.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Uh that is definitely a more of a rowdy hockey town.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: They love uh the sort of the hard-hitting, fast-paced kind of play.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: And so that was always fun to play in front of them.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: And some of the crowds they get were unbelievable, and um just Johnstown in general, it's right outside of Pittsburgh, so it's just like known as you know, Steel Irontown, uh, a lot of blue-collar families, and and they take you in as with Billet families, and they're some of the best people ever.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: So to be able to play hockey in front of them and then have that sort of slap shot history right now.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: As long as nobody was bringing their toys.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: No, no, exactly.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: It was uh it was just an amazing time there.
- 11:31SPEAKER_06: I I I have to imagine that uh that there was a look in the crowd, maybe uh some glasses, but some tape right now, right?
- 11:40SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: We had a we definitely had a we had a specialty jersey night uh with the Chiefs logo on it, and then actually uh one of them still lives in Johnstown.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: So it's there's the two Hansen brothers that are actually brought to the other.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: One's a cuther cousin, right?
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: Uh no, he's not even related, he just looks like them.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: And uh he's the so the third one actually lives in Johnstown.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: So he actually came to uh at the beginning of the year like do like a booster dinner or whatever, and he came and uh spoke and got photos and stuff.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: He wore the glasses and all.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: It was it was really cool.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 12:16SPEAKER_06: I bet that guy doesn't buy a meal in town easily.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: Easily.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: I well, and I know um I know one of them made it to the NHL.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: At least one of them made it to the to the show.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: Um and uh, you know, Bruce Boudreaux was in that movie too.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: There's a bunch of guys who were like, you know, fringy guys, and like I mean, it just I I couldn't even imagine.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, that was like the hockey guys before the hockey guys I'm gonna do.
- 12:38SPEAKER_06: What a fun place to play.
- 12:40SPEAKER_06: So yeah.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: Well, you know, you you talk about you know that that path that you've gone on, and like a lot of the kids and families we talk to, there's no like straight line.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, very, very few people are Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, and Nathan McKinnon.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: There's always like uh it kind of snakes, and you and you end up finding you know the end of your path.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: But this show is built upon you know youth hockey and and helping players, parents, and coaches kind of coexist and be successful.
- 13:09SPEAKER_03: And at the end of the day, our number one thing is to have fun.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: Some of the coaches and mentors in your past, you know, you talk about the Billet family and and the relationships you have there and the different players, but talk about some of the mentors and coaches you've had that have like maybe you were down or maybe you were kind of doubting yourself, especially as you're getting like you know, 13, 14, 15 years old.
- 13:30SPEAKER_03: Who's who are some special folks that mentored you, kept you energized about the game and and made you know made you who you are, helped make you who you are?
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there was uh I mean I've I went through like every single year, uh, just the way like the Winnipeg hockey system works, like you're never really getting the same coach.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Uh and yeah, I always kind of felt like, you know, I was I was always someone until I got to later on in life, I was always someone that I was kind of, you know, I was having to prove myself often.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: I always felt like I there was players maybe getting more of an opportunity than me.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: So I had to kind of play at a higher level above myself to kind of even get into even playing field with them.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: So like coaches, I there wasn't too many like coaches that actually I felt were beneficial to me during the season.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: It was more so my off my uh my offseason coach uh at a at a training academy because that's someone who I would consistently see every single summer.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: And um that was where I had a lot more fun because I I was always on a team where it was like bottom half, bottom half, bottom half of like the the season and stuff.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: So it was always like tough times and the morale wasn't always up.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: So going in like my summer training every year, uh it was always nice to be with kind of a different, not so much of a win, uh uh like a win percentage coach, more of like a skills coach that wants to help you move forward.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: And uh that was someone that always kind of brought like a little bit more of the lighter side to hockey to me, and uh that definitely helped because it's some some people it's the opposite.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Some people go into summer, summer skates, and you know they barely want to be there and uh they don't really put too much into it.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: But to me, it was more that's where I was really having a lot of fun, and that's where I was really trying to exceed.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: But then uh, as for a lot of other people, it was my dad.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: My dad was always like my biggest fan.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: He uh always would come to like all my games, all like so many of my practices, drive me all over the place all times of the day, and uh he was always the one that was kind of motivating me, trying to give me tips when he could, and uh just helping me get better overall.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: So I would definitely give my entire hockey career to him for sure.
- 16:00SPEAKER_06: That's awesome, that's awesome.
- 16:02SPEAKER_06: Well, uh uh could I ask?
- 16:04SPEAKER_06: Uh, could we give a shout out to your off-season trainer uh by name?
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: So that would be Shay Weeks.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Shay Weeks.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: Mr.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: Freesen.
- 16:20SPEAKER_06: Well, it it's it sounds like Wayne was supportive, and we talk a lot about on this show about when the uh the the right time uh to speak up as a parent is and when to just be a supporter.
- 16:36SPEAKER_06: So uh talk talk to us a little bit about Wayne.
- 16:39SPEAKER_06: Was Wayne uh just a you got in the car, did you have fun, or did you guys talk about the game and kind of break it down?
- 16:48SPEAKER_06: How did that go in the car ride home?
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was uh I would I would never really get like yelled at or felt like I would be like nervous getting into the car.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: We would always talk about the games and uh he would like he would he just loved coming to like just seeing me play all the time, so that was it was always like an enjoying enjoyment thing for him, and then uh he would he basically helped uh dissect certain things of my play that I wouldn't see or realized, and maybe it took me a couple times of him telling me to do it until I had realized and be like, Oh yeah, you were right type of thing.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: And then eventually what do dads know, right?
- 17:33SPEAKER_06: What did dads know about hockey?
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he would, and this was like this because so then this is kind of when the first sort of uh videos were coming out, because then he would come to the ring with an i a little iPad mini and film some of my my stuff, like, yeah, right there, right there.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: So that was always kind of fun, and uh, especially because we do like summer tournaments all over the place, so there'd be like long hours in the car, so it'd be fun to chat about that stuff.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: And then he's also a big, big Winnipeg Jets fan, so it'd always be fun to go to games with him and um we'd like ISO like Jacob Truba or or Bufflin, even though it's pretty hard to replicate.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it'd be tough to replicate how he plays, but it's always fun to just kind of I ISO Cam the defense and chat about things like that.
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: Um your dad probably was an old school Winnipeg Jets fan.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: The the Thomas Steen, Keith Kachuk, Tomas, you know, the you know the so I I I used to play Tomas Steen on uh on NHL, uh Sega NHL 9394.
- 18:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and uh he was he he was fantastic Baba Cessna in goal, Baba Cessna in goal, Thomas Steen, uh man, that was uh that he he oh Dale How he was tough to take down.
- 18:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah, our yeah, Trent Yanni, yeah.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: Oh I mean, they were always in they were cursed being in the same division as the Oilers.
- 19:01SPEAKER_03: That was just a curse.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: That's exactly what he would say.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: That's the curse.
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:07SPEAKER_03: Well, you know, you talked about meeting a lot of these uh buddies up at Superior.
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: Um, did any of you play together or play against each other?
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: You know, hockey's a small world, and sometimes you know, you end up at a school or you know, especially a school like Wisconsin Superior because maybe you knew somebody there.
- 19:23SPEAKER_03: Did you have any relationships before there, or did this truly like you know, form up at school?
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I played with uh one of the guys that who was a year older than me.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: I played with him in the MJHL on one of my junior teams.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: So he uh had already gone a year there, and then so now he was going on to his second year, and he called me kind of late spring and told me about the school and stuff, and then uh so that was kind of the only guy I really knew going into it, and then you know, some of the the coaches like their their leagues to recruit from, so I had played against some of the other guys that were in the MJHL, but uh yeah, I basically only really had one guy new going into it.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: In the MJ, was that the Manitopa?
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Manitoba for our folks at home, MJHL, you know, they have the MJHL, they have the BCHL, you know, Toronto's got their, you know, their the you know, these are yeah, yeah.
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: So these are just right below the CHL level of uh of juniors.
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: So very, very cool.
- 20:23SPEAKER_06: So you're uh you're nearing the end of your superior journey, and a life-changing moment happens, COVID, and then you guys start making videos and walk us through like I don't know, the process of making those videos, and like what was the first video for you guys that actually just like took off?
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: See, for me, it actually wasn't the end of my superior journey.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: That was actually my covet happened on my first year of college spring break.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: So I only had a few hockey season in the books before the we were on spring break when covet started.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: We were on spring break when COVID started.
- 21:11SPEAKER_03: And got the whole news coming that had to have been that had to been brutal, yeah.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but uh uh tell those stories off camera, exactly.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, so we go into this, so we knew the season was gonna be a little bit weird.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: We go back to school, uh the whole mask thing.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: So the main thing was we were still so Wisconsin was a little bit of a looser state with a lot of the rules and stuff, and uh so we were still allowed to practice.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: So we're just we were allowed to be in our own homes with uh our guys, and then right to the rink and practicing.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: And uh one of the guys, but no game, so literally just the rink all day, every day, all that stuff.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: And then the one of the guys in our group, he uh did YouTube, he was kind of Film, he was filming like hockey YouTube stuff because he was a D1 transfer from University of Nebraska, Omaha.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: So he transferred in that year and he'd done uh YouTube stuff.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: And he was also on TikTok himself, but didn't really just kind of did it for fun.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: And then he noticed a little trend when he would post a few of us in his videos.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: People were starting to kind of like you know ask for people's names and start to relate to certain people.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: So he's like, Why don't I just make a group account called the Hockey Guys?
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: And then started posting more and more simple as that.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: And then started posting and uh more and more, and it was just a time where people were craving social media.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I know you asked if there was a certain video.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: To be honest, we were so lucky it was it was every video, every video we posted, it was just like going like humble brag, humble brag.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: It was oh, it's not like that.
- 22:59SPEAKER_06: Trust me.
- 23:01SPEAKER_06: No, but what you're saying makes perfect sense because we I I I can only speak for myself, but I would imagine many in our audience, you included, were probably you know, we were looking at everything we were interested in any way to consume content because we were in this pandemic, we had never been in something like this before.
- 23:22SPEAKER_06: I caught myself watching Karen videos, I didn't even know what Karen was until I started watching Karen videos and went down that rabbit hole.
- 23:30SPEAKER_06: So I can only imagine that people probably were just watching you guys, and maybe one didn't stick, and it was just hey, I'm I I I need some content that I can engage with, and and I like these guys.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: I was a complete nerd.
- 23:45SPEAKER_03: I was watching people build Legos because that's all we can do.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: Like, sure.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: We like my two boys, my two boys were um 14 and 10 or 13 and 10, going at 14 and 11, and we would literally order Lego sets and build Lego sets, and then we'd go outside, we play roller hockey, or then we had the synthetic shout out to the synthetic ice synthetic ice stock just went through the roof.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: I think I bought a lot of synthetic ice during COVID, like like you bet 600 square feet of synthetic ice, and then we were playing pickleball, and like, but like literally because sports wasn't on now, there was no live sports, we were making up our own sports, yeah.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: We were pickleball, pickleball, there it was.
- 24:27SPEAKER_03: So we'll talk a little bit about some of the you know, some of those those early like the ideas behind some of those videos, and and obviously we've we've watched you guys, we're following you on Instagram, we're watching you know the TikToks, but like we've been in situations where we've been college guys sitting around with ideas, and sometimes they're not always the safest or smartest ideas, but how does that translate with your group of friends and the hockey guys into into coming up with the ideas for these videos that just people are like that's hilarious?
- 24:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:58SPEAKER_06: I'm curious, do you guys like sit around and is there one guy that's like no, that's a dumb idea, or like that's a great idea, let's try it.
- 25:04SPEAKER_06: And if we fall on our face, uh who cares?
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so how's that work?
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: So early on, it was like because there was there was originally 10 of us, and we were just literally a friend group, and we just put everyone in the videos, like we didn't like recruit or like that's how kind of because it was a we're still a whole hockey team, but we were just a natural sort of friend group in the team.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Um, so there was 10 of us, so we're like, okay, how do we introduce each guy so people can kind of get their name or like kind of a little bit of like a personality shot?
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: So we would just kind of come up with different videos where each guy would have like their name on the screen, and then maybe whatever the theme of the video is, you can get like a little snippet of their personality, um, stuff like that.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: Because uh something we realized in the comments where people were like, because no one's allowed to see each other, like, oh, we kind of we feel like we're a part of your friend group.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: So that was something we really uh relay, like relied on was you know, how do we make people feel included?
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: How do we make this feel like it's just one big friend group?
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: And uh that's kind of what we did for the majority of like the COVID style years, and it would just be if you think of a video, bring it to the group and we'll try and get it done.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: And maybe if you need a couple tweaks with the video, no problem.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: And that's just kind of how we did it for uh a long time.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: Well, I think that's a good place to take a pause real quick.
- 26:34SPEAKER_03: We got to pay a couple bills, and uh, we'll be right back with Austin Friesen, uh, lately of the University of Wisconsin Superior, but part of the hockey guys, and uh we'll talk a little bit about that journey some more, and we'll uh we'll do some drill draw and some great things here on Too Many Men on the Mic.

- 29:39SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: Back to the show.
- 29:44SPEAKER_06: We are back with Austin Friesen from the Hockey Guys, and we're talking about starting a hockey show organically during trying times, COVID, and uh and and how that content has just snowballed and carried on.
- 30:03SPEAKER_06: I I gotta ask Austin, now that you've seen youth hockey, I have to imagine from a completely different lens.
- 30:11SPEAKER_06: So you've played hockey, uh been part of a youth hockey journey, and now you've started this uh youth hockey, hockey content channel.
- 30:21SPEAKER_06: How has it changed your perspective on the hockey community?
- 30:25SPEAKER_06: And what's what were some takeaways from you that you learned that were maybe kind of surprising to you?
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think like the difference between when I was growing up and kind of social media was just on the rise.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: It was always, you know, kind of limit what you post out there, limit what you say.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: You never know who can see it, you never know uh what's going to be shared, be very careful, kind of don't show yourself too much.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: And now I think it's almost the complete opposite that there's these um kids out there that are showing off their skills, whether that be on the ice or or practicing in the driveway, shooting pox, stick handling, whatever it may be.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of people showing really who they are and uh their love for the game in different ways.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: And uh, we always kind of made sure that we wanted to keep our content uh as PG as possible because we know that we have people watching us that are you know 35, but there's also youngsters watching us, and uh they see us kind of doing day in the life in college or um going to the rink and showing off you know our our suits we like to wear or our pregame routine and stuff like that.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: So we always just kind of took those lessons we learned from when it was more not so common of being careful and and kind of instilled in social media, but in a way we can still show off our personalities and stuff like that.
- 32:01SPEAKER_06: I love it.
- 32:01SPEAKER_06: So what I'm hearing is be authentic, be authentic, but don't be dumb.
- 32:12SPEAKER_06: That's an ism right there, coach.
- 32:13SPEAKER_06: That's that's an ism.
- 32:15SPEAKER_06: That's a t-shirt.
- 32:16SPEAKER_06: That's a t-shirt, that's a t shirt.
- 32:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, merch alert, merch alert, get that five be on the Shannon, Shannon, no.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: Shannon, get on.
- 32:21SPEAKER_06: We need to work on that one.
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: Be authentic, but don't be stupid.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: Actually, I'm well that in fact, I think tomorrow after after the skate, guys, be authentic, don't be dumb.
- 32:33SPEAKER_05: Don't be dumb.
- 32:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: Um, what's the engagement been like?
- 32:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, you had mentioned that you were, and I found this really kind of fascinating when you said, especially during COVID, people were saying, we feel like we're part of your friend group.
- 32:46SPEAKER_03: And as you guys have grown and leaned into this, um, you know, you hear about some of these social media personalities, like meeting other social media folks or inspiring other people to do social media.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: Have you guys had that effect?
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: Have you met, you know, other players younger and and who have been like, hey, how can how can I do this too?
- 33:05SPEAKER_03: What's that been like?
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think we've definitely met certain people that have uh watched our stuff and have have tried uh doing their own own channels.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: Well, something I could uh something that I could kind of tie into that was we knew we were doing something right when a year after we were doing social media, we were seeing all the other teams start to like copy our videos.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: And we weren't mad about it.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: We were we were like, okay, sweet, this is where hockey social media is going.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: And uh like we would see OHL teams doing uh our trends that we're doing, or or different college teams.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: Um, so that was like kind of cool to see because at first no one was ever no one ever really seen players maybe goofing around on the ice in their equipment.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: They've only really seen them doing little interviews, stale stuff like that.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: So uh it was cool to see like profess not professional, but like real teams and organizations kind of hopping on that social media trend.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: And then uh uh something that actually happened to me a few weeks ago, I was at a music festival in uh Minnesota, and a the one of the goalies for the University of North Dakota came up to me and said he recognized me.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: And he said that when he was when I'm not used to I'm not used to younger guys, our demographic is mostly female, so it's a little different when we hear uh guys say that they've uh seen our stuff, so it's always a little bit more like personable to us.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: And when he said he watched our videos in call YouTube videos in college and saw how much fun we had uh playing college, living the college lifestyle.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: That's what was made uh that's what helped him make one of his decisions to go to the college route himself.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: And uh he's starting his second year at uh North Dakota now.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: You guys better get you guys better get some of that nil.
- 35:10SPEAKER_03: You guys better get some of that nil.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's pretty cool to hear that happen.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: That's uh yeah, very recent story, too.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: Well, we'll talk about that for a second because there is a transition, right?
- 35:22SPEAKER_03: You know, it when you're in college and you're in that you know, crucible of being on a team, pig today.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: You're in that you know, you're in that crucible of being on a team, you're with your buddies, you know, not 24-7, but pretty doggone close.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: And there's just these things that just happen that inspire you to make content as guys have started to graduate and started to like you know move on to different facets and different parts of their life.
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: How have you guys kept this train going?
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: You know, what's that look like?
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: What is the what does the relationship look like today?
- 35:54SPEAKER_03: And and how are you guys?
- 35:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, you're still going to NHL ranks and following teams and doing these rankings and and silly stuff in the in the parking lot.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: How do you guys keep that going?
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: So, what like I said before how we started, we had 10 of us, and by the time graduation hit, we basically cut down to five.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: And it wasn't uh by choice, it was just each guy kind of had their own path.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, three guys went to go play pro, one guy went to go start his coaching career, another guy wanted to go be uh an accountant, so we took the guy, the remaining guys left.
- 36:35SPEAKER_03: You're gonna need one of those one day, by the way.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh, he is still our accountant, yeah, he really is.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: So um uh so then we had five of us left, and we all moved to Minneapolis together and got an office, and so then we now we're kind of doing a different storyline.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: We're out of the college era now, and now we're a friend group that's starting a business together and doing that stuff, and then as the years went by, guys started you know dropping off a little bit.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: They now are we just went through our set our fourth, our fourth wedding of the friend group.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: I was just at it this weekend.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah, big life moments, yeah.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: A lot of a lot of things are changing in other guys' lives, and so now what started as 10 is we're down to three, but the three people, myself included, absolutely love it.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: We want to keep going as long as we can.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: So what we do now is we have like weekly meetings, we're always trying to plan out.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: We're very coordinated now with our content planning and what we put out there.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: Uh it's not just so much, you know, film it and post, it's there's a reason behind it.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: And then um we're very particular with how we work with brands.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: And does is it like it's not so much just about money, it's about is this gonna be interesting to our followers?
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: Is it the right fit?
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: And we're we're very dialed in, I should say, more.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: It's more there's a lot more pressure now that we're kind of rely on this as our as our career.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: It's not so we're just sitting in a college house and you know, we're still gonna go to school tomorrow and we're still gonna have our game the next day.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: So now it's um a little bit more serious, but we still try and make the content as light and as uh fun as possible.
- 38:32SPEAKER_06: Well, I love light and fun, and uh this is an open invitation because I think you guys do some interesting content pieces like unique foods and places to go in different cities and arenas.
- 38:46SPEAKER_06: We will be your St.
- 38:48SPEAKER_06: Louis guys.
- 38:49SPEAKER_06: So if you ever need good tips on good food, good places to go.
- 38:54SPEAKER_06: So I'll tie that into last weekend.
- 38:56SPEAKER_06: I was up in uh Grand Rapids, Michigan, and I just happened to be talking to another parent on my team because I was thinking about my second cup of coffee.
- 39:02SPEAKER_03: I had my social, you're a social guy.
- 39:05SPEAKER_06: I'm a social guy.
- 39:05SPEAKER_06: I had I had I had my first cup of coffee.
- 39:07SPEAKER_06: I was thinking about my second one.
- 39:09SPEAKER_06: I did not get my first cup of coffee at the ice rink, but before I went there, I went to the dad and I said, Give me a rating, A, B, C, D, or F.
- 39:19SPEAKER_06: Where is the ice rink coffee?
- 39:22SPEAKER_06: So I gotta ask, are you a coffee drinker, Austin?
- 39:24SPEAKER_06: Do you like coffee?
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: I don't mind it.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: I like to add a few things to my coffee.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: I know the other two guys in my group like it uh black, but I need a little something extra in there.
- 39:36SPEAKER_06: So just out of sheer curiosity, have you been to an ice rink where you walked away maybe early in the morning and you said, This is it, this is the best ice rink coffee I think I've ever had in my life.
- 39:51SPEAKER_06: Is it did it did it file a memory in your head and you said I gotta I gotta tell everybody about this?
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: You know, I I don't know who's chasing.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: He's really chasing I'm chasing, I'm chasing a good coffee rink.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: I I we do that sometimes with uh rank popcorn.
- 40:09SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: Well, you gotta you gotta come down so all right.
- 40:12SPEAKER_06: So so no so no, who's who's got uh who's uh who's got the best rinked popcorn out there?
- 40:17SPEAKER_06: I'm I'd I'd I'd love for the listeners to hear.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: Well, I would have to say, well, first of all, there's another joke that ties into that.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: The joke is let's go.
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: I'm in.
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: Get your popcorn.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: You were scratched.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: So I didn't want to enjoy the rinked popcorn too often.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, health bombed.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, I would say the uh the University of uh Wisconsin River Falls has some good popcorn, and uh that's kind of the only one that sticks in my memory because I tried to avoid it as much as possible.
- 40:54SPEAKER_03: But uh well, we have uh we've got a certain rink down here that we're both affiliated with.
- 41:00SPEAKER_03: It's the Afton Americans uh ring.
- 41:03SPEAKER_03: You grew up an Afton American.
- 41:04SPEAKER_06: I I I am I'm an alumnus, but they they they have uh uh one of the best breakfast sandwiches.
- 41:11SPEAKER_06: Uh I I I'll I'll challenge the group uh that's out there.
- 41:14SPEAKER_06: I I'll I'll put it up against uh other rinks out there.
- 41:18SPEAKER_06: Let's see who's got a better breakfast sandwich.
- 41:20SPEAKER_03: I was in Philadelphia this past year um twice, once for nationals and once for uh tournament.
- 41:26SPEAKER_03: And at both tournaments in Philadelphia, a guy from New Jersey and a guy from uh I want to say maybe Buffalo, somewhere in New York, we're talking, they saw who we were, they're like, that's where those breakfast sandwiches are.
- 41:40SPEAKER_03: No, not no not a word of the line.
- 41:42SPEAKER_03: We have a lot of teams coming in from Chicago and from uh Nashville and Indianapolis, and and every time you see somebody at the rink, they're like, are they still selling the breakfast sandwiches?
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: So I challenge you to come down to get the breakfast sandwiches and raid us against anybody.
- 41:57SPEAKER_06: We didn't have a good breakfast sandwich at level five.
- 42:01SPEAKER_03: Level five.
- 42:03SPEAKER_03: When you're at level five, you they cook you omelets.
- 42:06SPEAKER_03: Oh, you don't get a breakfast.
- 42:10SPEAKER_03: Oh shit.
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: We'll talk about we'll talk about that on the top in a couple weeks.
- 42:15SPEAKER_03: Um well I I think we've got a great segue here.
- 42:17SPEAKER_03: You're talking about how you and your buddies have now formed this business.
- 42:21SPEAKER_03: And um, I think it's a great opportunity for us to ask a little bit about this business and in particular the partnership we're about to have.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: We've been teasing it for the last couple weeks, but tell us about Afterlight.
- 42:32SPEAKER_03: Tell us about you know how this came about.
- 42:35SPEAKER_03: And you know, we want to make sure that we're sharing with everybody that that you know, too many men on the mic in Afterlight.
- 42:40SPEAKER_03: We're working uh a new uh a new partnership here for the short term and tell us a little bit about it.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is uh a project that I've been working on for quite some time now, and it's starting to really uh be in its final process of of getting going.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: And it's basically I wanted to create something that could not only be an everyday use, uh, people can enjoy it for activity, natural hydration, just getting something a little different than water, but also something that can help you, you or a friend that, you know, if you like to have a few beverages after a game, during a game, um, whenever it may be, that uh can help you get going the next day and make you not feel so rough in the morning and uh kind of help you be productive throughout that day.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: So I wanted to create something um that could serve both purposes, and that's where I came up with Afterlight.
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: And it's uh basically it's a hydration electrolyte, but there are special ingredients in all it's all natural, special ingredients in there that will help basically your body process alcohol quicker than basic water or Let's say another basic run-of-the-mill electrolyte.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: And I figured, you know, hockey is a community that likes to have fun like that, whether it be in at games, in the hotel, wherever, in the parking lot sometimes, who knows?
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: They uh that community likes to have those beverages.
- 44:21SPEAKER_01: So I figured the Too Many Men podcasts, I met you guys and we chatted about something completely different.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: And about halfway through the call, it kind of clicked in my head that uh you guys would be a great representation of the brand.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: And I feel like uh you guys would do a great job kind of spreading, spreading the word, spreading the product, and uh I'd be happy to really get involved with you guys as my first step into the hockey community.
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: So uh I'm glad uh glad that's where it's at so far, and I'm really excited to get it going.
- 44:59SPEAKER_06: Well, we are honored.
- 45:00SPEAKER_06: Thank you for entrusting us.
- 45:03SPEAKER_06: What a great product.
- 45:04SPEAKER_06: Uh there are several parents that I'm thinking of as I'm choosing my next set of words.
- 45:10SPEAKER_06: But uh we can edit it.
- 45:11SPEAKER_03: We can edit it.
- 45:11SPEAKER_03: We got a producer.
- 45:12SPEAKER_06: What what what a great uh product.
- 45:16SPEAKER_06: Uh uh, so moms, dads out there, especially on travel teams where you have maybe your second game that ends at I don't know, nine o'clock, five, even five or six in the afternoon, and you got the whole night ahead of you, and uh you as a team are hanging out in the hotel.
- 45:34SPEAKER_06: Afterlight needs to be part of your evening uh repertoire.
- 45:39SPEAKER_06: That's a big word too.
- 45:40SPEAKER_03: Repertoire.
- 45:41SPEAKER_03: Not that I've ever experienced this as a coach, but I would say that uh there have been plenty of times where you know parents have gone to bed at 2, 2:30 in the morning and then had to get up at 6 to drive to the rink because they've got a 7 o'clock or 7:30 game.
- 45:58SPEAKER_03: And um, we're excited to to be a partner with with you.
- 46:03SPEAKER_03: I think that this is a great fit, and we've already got some folks you know that we're talking to to help uh you know spread the the product, but uh super excited.
- 46:13SPEAKER_03: There'll be some potential specials for a lot of our other guests who have come on already and also for our listeners.
- 46:19SPEAKER_03: But you know, again, just so excited, and and you have to be proud about the uh the fact that you guys have taken this just camaraderie during COVID, and now you're you're monetizing it and putting it into a business, and we just couldn't be more excited to be a part of that within.
- 46:35SPEAKER_06: And I love the visual, it's great.
- 46:37SPEAKER_06: Isn't that great?
- 46:38SPEAKER_06: The sun's coming in, and there's afterlight, it could be the sun's going up or down, sun's going up or down, either way.
- 46:44SPEAKER_06: You can take it any time of day, right?
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: Great way to put it.
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, thank you, thank you.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're uh yeah, right now we have the two flavors, the berry and the tropical.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, I like to say, just like for a game, you want to prepare before the game, you don't want to prepare during the game or before you know it when the game's over, you're like, oh, what just happened?
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: So uh the main goal is you know take a packet before you start start your fun because that's gonna prepare your body and it's gonna be able to uh do its job a little bit better, just like on the ice.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: And that goes with the same with if you're playing pickleball or you're good you're doing your own men's league, it's it's great for all of that stuff.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: And then if you even need that extra zip, the tropical flavor, it's called Afterlight AM.
- 47:34SPEAKER_01: You can use it in the mornings because it has some caffeine in it as well.
- 47:38SPEAKER_01: So uh lots of uses for it, and I've tested it in a few different ways.
- 47:44SPEAKER_01: Uh uh, it's it's working so far, so I'm excited.
- 47:48SPEAKER_03: So I don't need helped him get the hat, helped him get the hattie in men's league last week.
- 47:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and and I don't need the bad ice rink coffee.
- 47:54SPEAKER_06: I can just have there you go, after 11 a.m.
- 47:56SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 47:57SPEAKER_03: Well, we've hit the youth hockey journey, we've got something here for the parents.
- 48:01SPEAKER_03: I think it's time we uh give the coaches a little something.
- 48:03SPEAKER_03: Austin has agreed to help us drop a draw, uh, drop a driller game in our drill draw.
- 48:08SPEAKER_03: So we'll be right back here with too many men on the mic, drill draw right after this.
- 48:14SPEAKER_02: You want to pull it up, Jared?
- 48:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:22SPEAKER_03: Oh, for our listeners, you know that song, you know that organ.
- 48:25SPEAKER_03: We're here for drill draw, powered by drift hockey, the only one hockey to go to the event.
- 48:30SPEAKER_03: We use it at the hockey, it functions at the schedule, communicate practice plans, and as you're gonna see right now, you're able to draw up drills and draw up small area games and things that can have fun and practice and also help you develop.
- 48:44SPEAKER_03: So we're joined here with Austin.
- 48:46SPEAKER_04: We're gonna pull up uh our drill draw.
- 48:54SPEAKER_03: Um to their own practices.
- 48:56SPEAKER_03: So let me get this thing rolling here.
- 48:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and while you're getting that rolling, uh this is for all the coaches that are out there listening.
- 49:03SPEAKER_06: You're right at the beginning of the season, perhaps, or soon to be at the beginning of the season.
- 49:08SPEAKER_06: Don't forget to go to too many menonthemic.com.
- 49:11SPEAKER_06: There is an entire library of drills that are out there.
- 49:14SPEAKER_06: We say this frequently on the show.
- 49:16SPEAKER_06: Uh, we're coaches and we're thieves, we're always interested in getting the best ideas.
- 49:22SPEAKER_06: So please feel free to take a look at some of these uh drills and incorporate them into your practice plan for your teams this year.
- 49:32SPEAKER_03: Got a big library here.
- 49:34SPEAKER_03: This is a lot of a lot of coaches sharing uh a lot of great drills, and then and I we always find out the kids when they like the drill, it's always like one more.
- 49:43SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, it's always one more, one more.
- 49:46SPEAKER_03: So all right, Austin.
- 49:48SPEAKER_03: It uh it's your canvas.
- 49:49SPEAKER_03: What are we doing?
- 49:51SPEAKER_01: Do I like use my mouse and draw it or nope?
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: I'll draw it.
- 49:55SPEAKER_06: You just call you just call it out.
- 49:56SPEAKER_06: Where do you uh how many nets do you need?
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: Players do we have goalies?
- 50:01SPEAKER_01: Okay, I hope this one wasn't put in there.
- 50:03SPEAKER_01: I didn't quite see it, but we'll see.
- 50:05SPEAKER_01: So uh nets in the regular positions.
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: All right, and uh then we're gonna have forwards along uh the wall on both blue lines and both sides.
- 50:19SPEAKER_03: So we're going at both blue lines on both sides in the neutral.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, more more so uh neutral zone, yeah.
- 50:28SPEAKER_03: Good.
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: Um, I'd say leave uh more towards the middle because you're gonna need room uh inside the blue line.
- 50:36SPEAKER_03: Gotcha.
- 50:37SPEAKER_03: And forwards are same colors?
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, it can be it can be anything for the forwards.
- 50:44SPEAKER_01: This is more so like an earlier practice drill.
- 50:47SPEAKER_01: Gotcha.
- 50:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so just forwards on both sides of that, and then uh then the D.
- 50:55SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, I know I put forwards on both sides of the line because they're gonna be coming from each each end.
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: Gotcha.
- 51:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, perfect.
- 51:06SPEAKER_01: And then uh, yeah, right on the other awesome, and then uh D, D in the middle of the circle, kind of um, you know, three on one side, three on the other.
- 51:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just kind of hanging out there, and then uh yeah, pucks will all be pucks will all be in the middle, and um right here, yeah, and then pucks in all corners, I guess.
- 51:38SPEAKER_01: Just like yeah, that's not like a huge deal, but yeah, just kind of pucks in each corner.
- 51:42SPEAKER_01: So then what's gonna happen is both sides are gonna be going at the same time, and um the goalies, yes, goalies in each net.
- 51:55SPEAKER_03: We like to give goalies some love here, yeah.
- 51:57SPEAKER_03: Not much, not much, not much.
- 52:01SPEAKER_01: My coaches would have liked this thing when I was uh going up, that's for sure.
- 52:05SPEAKER_01: This is pretty nice.
- 52:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh-huh.
- 52:07SPEAKER_01: So what's gonna happen is both sides are gonna go at the same time.
- 52:10SPEAKER_01: One of the D this basically the second D is D in line is gonna throw a puck to the the dot.
- 52:17SPEAKER_01: So let's just say the left dot.
- 52:21SPEAKER_03: So we got this guy right here, or right here.
- 52:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that guy throwing the puck to the left dot, and then on the other side, that guy throwing the puck to that left dot, and then the first D in line is gonna backpedal quickly, take three hard steps, grab the puck.
- 52:41SPEAKER_03: So this guy right here, yeah.
- 52:43SPEAKER_01: He's gonna basically grab the puck and then wheel to the opposite end, kind of touch the bottom, touch that top of the circle.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: Uh more so, uh the sorry, more so like do like uh a spin, kind of go to the gotcha, gotcha, gotcha.
- 52:57SPEAKER_01: So yeah, let's spinning away from pressure, turning out, yeah, exactly.
- 53:02SPEAKER_01: Like that, and then kind of move up ice, and yeah, perfect.
- 53:07SPEAKER_01: And that forward, um, basically that forward and line on the um the top of the red.
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is a longer drill to explore right here.
- 53:18SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, he's gonna go blue line.
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: Um, sorry, close blue line, yeah, like that.
- 53:25SPEAKER_01: Uh, do a little like tight turn, but he's face, yeah, tight turn, and then he's gonna basically loop back and get open for that D-man who's moving up ice for a pass.
- 53:36SPEAKER_03: Oh, going going the opposite way, going with um more so transitioning again.
- 53:41SPEAKER_01: So he's doing another like open up pivot where he's looking, and that D-man is pretty much gonna feed him the puck.
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: Gotcha when he's open and kind of moving up ice.
- 53:53SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, just like that, and then that guy's that forward's just gonna go down and shoot.
- 53:59SPEAKER_02: Gotcha.
- 54:00SPEAKER_01: So we'll skate with the puck, make him a lefty, because lefty's that shoot, and he'll uh then stay in front of the net, and then that whole then uh it's basically gonna do that again, but from the opposite side.
- 54:19SPEAKER_03: Gotcha.
- 54:20SPEAKER_03: So he's gonna he's gonna camp out in front of the net.
- 54:22SPEAKER_01: He'll camp out in front of the net, and then that D-man, the same D-man who passed the puck, is gonna get a second pass from uh now on the opposite side, and he's gonna do the same thing and loop back up.
- 54:37SPEAKER_03: So he's gonna he's gonna continue on like this.
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: No, he's sorry, he's gonna transition at that red line and and start backpedaling, and then that same player is gonna throw him a puck at that other dot.
- 54:47SPEAKER_03: Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha, gotcha.
- 54:49SPEAKER_03: So he's gonna skate back, he's gonna transition to backward right here.
- 54:52SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 54:53SPEAKER_03: So we're going backward at the other dot here.
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, pick that, pick that puck up, wheel around again, then there's gonna be that forward.
- 55:01SPEAKER_03: And the same defenseman who dumped the first puck's gonna make the pass to him again, yeah, yeah.
- 55:06SPEAKER_01: So right here, yeah, perfect.
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: And then he's gonna grab that puck and and start wheeling again, and then that forward's gonna um come down and transition, open up.
- 55:20SPEAKER_03: So is he wheeling?
- 55:21SPEAKER_03: So let's let's go.
- 55:23SPEAKER_03: Is he picking up the puck, transitioning and wheeling this way?
- 55:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay, yeah, and then that forward is gonna come down to the blue line, transition and open up for him to skate down on that exact and that that same end that other forward was near this near blue line guy right now is gonna come back here, then transition.
- 55:44SPEAKER_01: Transition, get open, facing him, make sure you're always facing the play, and then face the puck, yeah, get that pass from him, and then he's gonna go out, go down and shoot, make sure on a contested shot, yeah.
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: Not not getting right up in there, kind of a maybe a little bit before the top of the circle, shooting that in, and then right here, yeah, and then that first forward who is waiting in front of the net is gonna go get a puck from that side that that forward just came down on.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: Gotcha, and then that D-man who made that pass is gonna be on the uh move it move up to the blue line, get that pass, walk to the middle, and shoot while both forwards are in front of the net.
- 56:33SPEAKER_03: Gotcha.
- 56:33SPEAKER_03: So this is I I love this drill.
- 56:36SPEAKER_03: I know exactly I've I've I love I've done we've done something similar with half ice where you're constant movement.
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: Um, so he's gonna come in here, you're gonna get a pass out of the corner, and then you know, delay for them to get two to in front of the net.
- 56:52SPEAKER_01: Well, actually, we want that D-man starting on the wall because then it's uh so then he can move to the center of the ice.
- 56:59SPEAKER_02: All right, so we'll have him hang on.
- 57:04SPEAKER_02: Let's move him down here.
- 57:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 57:08SPEAKER_03: And he can he can walk the blue line with the puck.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he can walk to the blue line with the puck, and he can either look for a tip pass from the guy who just passed, who's driving the net, or he can walk all the way and shoot it on net and look for uh a tip through there or through traffic.
- 57:27SPEAKER_03: So he's gonna come to the middle here.
- 57:29SPEAKER_03: We're gonna have two forwards in front at that point, and then I imagine we are doing it the in synchronic, you know, you're you know, synchronized for the other side as well.
- 57:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:40SPEAKER_01: Then the other side's gonna be going the same time on the other side.
- 57:43SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 57:44SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 57:45SPEAKER_03: This is a beginning, start a practice, get the blood flowing, also get the get your head going.
- 57:50SPEAKER_03: How many drill kills were there in college when this was going on?
- 57:54SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, we we liked this one, especially I was a D-man because I'd have practices where I wouldn't shoot on the net.
- 58:03SPEAKER_01: There would be it would all just be passing and yeah, retrieving pucks and stuff.
- 58:08SPEAKER_01: So if I knew this drill was coming, I was I would make sure I'd be hitting that every time because I would say buttons.
- 58:15SPEAKER_03: Gotta get your cookies.
- 58:16SPEAKER_03: Get your clapper ready.
- 58:17SPEAKER_03: Well, what are we what are we gonna call this?
- 58:19SPEAKER_03: Let's we gotta get something with afterlight in it.
- 58:21SPEAKER_06: Yeah, Austin's afterlife.
- 58:23SPEAKER_03: Austin's after afterlife.
- 58:24SPEAKER_03: Afterlight.
- 58:25SPEAKER_03: There it is.
- 58:26SPEAKER_01: Austin's afterlight.
- 58:28SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 58:30SPEAKER_01: I honestly don't remember the name for the real name for this one, anyways, so that works perfectly.
- 58:35SPEAKER_03: That's that's how it works here.
- 58:36SPEAKER_03: We you know, we'll uh we'll clean this up, we'll get some instructions on, and then this will be live on our website for coaches to uh download and use.
- 58:45SPEAKER_03: Um, love it, absolutely love this stuff, man.
- 58:48SPEAKER_03: I love the fact that we've already, you know, he's he's he was a hockey player, he's you know been a social media content guy.
- 58:54SPEAKER_03: He's going into you know, you know, now business.
- 58:57SPEAKER_03: We're gonna make him a coach for it's all said and done.
- 58:59SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 59:01SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 59:02SPEAKER_03: So tell us, you know, uh any big plans for the weekend?
- 59:05SPEAKER_03: What's new on the horizon for the hockey guys?
- 59:07SPEAKER_03: What are some things that we should be looking out for?
- 59:10SPEAKER_01: Uh this weekend I'm actually uh driving uh back up to Manitoba, going to Winnipeg for a little bit, see some family, uh do some stuff around there, and then uh head back to Minneapolis and get uh that's when I'm getting ready to fully uh launch afterlight.
- 59:29SPEAKER_01: So I'll be busy, I'll be busy, busy doing that over the next little while.
- 59:33SPEAKER_01: And before you know it, hockey season, the NHL season's gonna be starting, and we are always on call when when it's NHL season.
- 59:41SPEAKER_01: We never know when who's who's gonna be calling.
- 59:44SPEAKER_01: So we've worked so far, we have worked with 18 different NHL teams, and uh our goal is to work with everyone, but uh you know, we haven't worked with St.
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: Louis yet.
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: So if you know we know a few, we know a few guys.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we'll help you out.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_03: Um well tell you know, since we're we're gonna end on the NHL note, you know, we're leading into the season, you know, we've got a super team down in Florida, apparently, that everybody thinks is gonna win the Stanley Cup.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_03: What's your prediction this year?
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_03: Who's who's representing the West, who's representing the East?
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I know.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_01: Uh and what about Cale McCarr?
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_01: Well, I actually played against him in juniors.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_01: And uh yeah, this was before he even went to Team Canada uh and did that stuff.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_01: So I knew he was a dangerous weapon a while ago.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_01: So it's amazing to see what he's been doing.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_01: And he just set the bar for Quinn Hughes, too, now yeah, but uh, you know, you know, Florida, I I really they're gonna be a heavy one for sure, but I'm I'm also really I you know, Minneapolis, man, uh Minnesota, they're they're making all the right moves.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_01: They're really uh taking a step, seems like not even every year, almost like every 20 plus games, they're trying to do something big.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_01: But uh, you know, I'm also hoping for uh McDavid.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_01: So I think I think the West is an absolute gauntlet between the Wild, Edmonton, Vegas, um, you know, San Jose could pop out at any moment with all their young stars.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_01: So I I think this is gonna be a very, very exciting NHL season.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_03: Uh do the wild get Larkin?
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_01: I I don't know.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_01: I hope is uh a magician so far.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't be surprised if they do, but uh I'm focused on where my halibucks are going at the moment.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_06: Oh, I was just gonna ask that.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_06: So how do you feel about that?
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_06: And are are you hoping he's gonna stick around, or what are you thinking if he's gonna go?
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_06: What what what are you looking for in return?
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, I think I I wasn't too mad when he said he wanted the trade, uh, just because you know, I think our problems, I think he could bring in a haul where it could solve a few more problems than than goaltending, really.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_01: And you know, we did get Stuart Skinner, who I think could could still be enough of a goalie that where you know maybe the pieces we get for Halibuck make it that much.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_03: You've been to more Stanley Cup finals than Halibuck.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_01: So only thing I'm hoping for now is we get we get some relative some relative help now, not not a 2029 first round.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_03: Right, yeah, right.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_03: You've got you've got a window with some players there right now.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously Scheifley and Connor are are just you know marquee guys back on defense.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_03: And you probably need a I figure probably like everybody else need a a second a second pair of right shot defensemen.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_03: Um but you guys have a window for sure, and and I've always loved that.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_03: I've loved that team and just the way they're comprised.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_03: Um being when back when they had Blake Wheeler, yeah, loved that, loved how that was.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_03: So it's a good squad.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_03: I hope I hope Connor Hellibuck stays there.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_03: If he's gonna go anywhere, hopefully he goes home to Detroit.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_03: But that that place is a complete chaos, terrible.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_03: The Icer plan was just uh never mind.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry, didn't mean to get down that path.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_03: I do agree with you though.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_03: I I think somebody from the West is gonna surprise us.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_03: I think I I don't know if San Jose is quite ready, um, but you look at Utah.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_03: I look at that team and just the vibe they've got, the way they're built, you know, what a difference a couple hundred miles makes when you move from uh I mean that that Utah team is Winnipeg.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, people forget about that.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_03: That's the original Jets.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, they are they're the original Jets.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_03: I think they've got something there.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_03: Um, and they're probably I think they get past the first round this year.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_06: I, you know, I gotta say, uh, and I'm not just hopping on the bandwagon because they uh did some great things last year, but Montreal specifically because they locked up their core early, they locked them up before this offseason happened.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_06: And I just read this the other day.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_06: Did you know Lane Hudson was signed for eight and a half million dollars?
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_06: It's a steal one just signed for over 20.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_03: And and Quinn Hughes is gonna Quinn Hughes is gonna sign for probably close to 23.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and so you look at a team like Montreal and say they did a great job of locking up their players early.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_06: Yep, and I just feel like that's gonna carry that team here for the next two, three, four years, where maybe some other teams are cap strapped and they're gonna be like, we locked up our guys earlier and we got them a lot cheaper before this whole salary cap increased.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_06: And so now we can add a maybe a Connor McDavid.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_01: That's a really good point.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, yeah.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_03: Well, I I I I I like Montreal, I like what they've done.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_03: Don't sleep on Philly.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_06: They're off for sheet never.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_06: I like I like where Philly's going.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_06: I think they're gonna sleep on Philly.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_06: I think they're a couple years away.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_06: I mean, it'll be interesting to watch the Ducks, the Sharks, and Philly.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_06: Yeah, because those are three really good teams with young cores, and I kind of feel like uh Philly's maybe a little bit behind the sharks and the ducks, yeah, but not not a whole lot.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_03: Well, it's do or die time for teams like Dallas.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_03: It's do or die for for Colorado because they're gonna have some big decisions to make the next couple of years.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_03: It's do or die for Tampa.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_03: I think this is the last hurrah for Tampa.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_06: Love John Cooper.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_03: Love John Cooper, but like that team, I think you know, if Braden Point doesn't come back to the old Braden Point, they're gonna struggle.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_06: And headman, they need headman playing a full season.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_03: But uh I'm I'm hoping I'm I'm hoping for your for your Jets.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_03: Um, I see no hope for my Red Wings.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_03: I'm originally from Detroit.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_06: Well, Austin, when we get you locked in with the St.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_06: Louis Blues.

- 1:06:35SPEAKER_06: We had big words, we had uh uh like four big words.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_03: Crucible and you turned that one out.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_03: I know, right?
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_03: What's the last time you said crucible?
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_03: Probably when I read that book in high school.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_06: And uh I love this.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_06: I can't wait to uh uh talk about the day in time in the future when Austin and the hockey guys are part of the St.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_06: Louis Blues community.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_06: I don't know if the Detroit Red Wings are part of his 18 team community.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_06: Hopefully they probably not.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_03: They could use some they could use some afterlight.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_06: Hopefully we can get uh get them hooked into Afterlight.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_06: But uh so excited to work with Austin and uh and the hockey guys over there and the Afterlight team.

- 1:07:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're gonna have a certain guy from USA hockey join us here in two weeks on it, uh Mr.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_03: Bob Mancini.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_03: Um, and then personally, there's a big thing going on about three weeks from now.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_03: If you're in St.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_03: Louis, September 20th, uh we uh Too Many Men on the Mic Acoustic Duo is a part of the 2026 St.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_03: Louis Porch Fest.

- 1:08:00SPEAKER_06: This is great.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_06: So if you're a fan of music, this is uh the way that music is uh uh uh maybe the way that uh you you think of it if you don't want to leave your house, right?
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_06: It's listening to music on your porch, it's called Porch Fest.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_06: And so uh I I tallied it up.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_06: I came up with the account uh with a count of 60 plus bands that are participating this amongst residential porches throughout the St.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_06: Louis area.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_06: Each porch is going to have a different band.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_06: Uh, throughout the day, this is going on all day Sunday.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_06: It culminates with Steve Ewing.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_06: If you know Steve Ewing locally, uh fantastic performer.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_06: If you don't know him, you might have heard of him in a band called The Urge.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_06: It was on MTV back in the day.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_06: Uh uh and uh really looking forward to it.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_06: But this is old school playing.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_06: This is playing on a porch.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_06: I love it.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_03: Playing on a porch in a great neighborhood.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_03: You're able to walk and see all these bands live for free.
