- Alex: Welcome to another edition of the Unsexy Podcast, where we talk about the unsexy side of everything. We are doing episode ten, check in nine. Kicking it over to Eric. Aaron: All right, Alejandro, your weight. Alex: one sixty four point two. Aaron: I'm always afraid of like a hundred and fifty four pounds. Alex: Not yet. Probably not ever. Probably not ever. Actually, definitely not ever. It will never be 154. Dude, on my mission I got down to like 120. Aaron: good. Yeah. on your mission? like yeah. gotcha. Like ever again. Yes, gotcha. number of workouts that you accomplished this week. Alex: Pretty sure five. Aaron: Is your gym back open? Alex: Yeah, it's open. Aaron: thank God. how many days do you hit your macros? Alex: five of seven. Aaron: Okay. Steps, average steps. Alex: Six sixteen thousand. Aaron: Man, you are just crushing the steps. Good lord. okay. So wow, week nine, hell yeah. wins and achievements from this week. Alex: not think about this one. I've only been thinking about the negative. When's it? I'm still going. I haven't given up. Aaron: Haven't Alex: That's the one right now. It's been like overall everything has been like it hasn't been crappy. Like I always get the what's the word for my wife? The like the positivity for my wife where she's like it You know, like we're all healthy, like we have these things, we have these things, most of our problems are very insignificant. So I'm very cognizant of that, but there's just been a Aaron: Yes. Alex: clusterfuck of shit like the last ten days. So I'm Aaron: Yes. Alex: just happy that that we're still hitting it. We're still hitting the gym. We're still we're still still committed. Aaron: You s still Do you s find going to the gym helps you with just like your mental state? Alex: Probably so now like I went Wednesday last week. I started going to the gym, like the the real gym again. and then get just honest and then getting back into like a normal sleep. Honestly just a normal routine, which we haven't had a normal routine since for probably like fourteen days. So Aaron: Yeah. Yeah. It does make a giant difference though. Like I think we talked about this before where you you're on vacation or just Alex: Creatures of habit. Aaron: just out of town. And even if you're having a great time on your vacation, like there's a part of you that's still what's like, I love this vacation, I'm having a great time. I can't wait to get back to normal and just get back into the whatever. Alex: The routine. Aaron: Yeah, back into the routine. there's just something Alex: Yeah. Aaron: Yeah, yeah, I guess that's true. There's parts that are shitty. But just the mental ease of like, all right, I know what I'm doing today. I'm d do do do do do do like I don't know. It's whatever. all right. Well let's let's Alex: Yeah. Really is. Aaron: talk about your negativity then. Alex: so l like honestly it's just like my arm keeps killing me. And I'm so I'm taking weight down. yeah, Aaron: Is it your right arm? Right? Alex: my right arm. So like it most of the workouts I've been doing it ha like I've managed it well enough to where like I'm not feeling pain whenever I'm doing anything. So I'm like, all right, that means I'm doing the right weights. Yeah. So hopefully it'll Aaron: Not aggravating it, yeah. Yeah. Alex: start going away. I'm a little nervous like it's not like he did the little pressure point things. Like it's it's either something muscular or actually it doesn't feel too bad right now. Miracle live right now. It still hurts a little bit, but not nearly as bad as it has been. so that's just been really effing and annoying because it's like I'm doing this Aaron: Yes. Alex: thing, I'm trying to accomplish these goals, and like this and like having to find the like a because I was doing like maybe with my best bicep, but I was like doing five-pound hammer curls, like just so I didn't feel the pain. I'm just like, Aaron: Sure. Yeah. Alex: I think I'm feeling at my bicep, but like at the same time, I'm just like And then I have to remind myself at least I'm doing something. But it's just been it's just been really frustrating. Aaron: Yes. Well, yes, it's kind of like the reason I'm laughing is because I'm literally going through the exact same thing with like my shoulder. Like I'm pretty sure it's a rotator cuff something. so I'm doing all these different exercises trying to help with it. But if you're just like, I'm doing everything I'm supposed to do, I'm having good form, I'm eating good, I'm sleeping good, and then I I think that I I just remember like it's getting old. That's like your body just breaks Alex: Also true. Aaron: down way more easily. and then I try and spit it this way of imagine if I was really out of shape, how many other things would be hurting besides like just my shoulder? Probably bunch of probably my knees, my back, my everything. and so I would rather have this my this like nagging injury be from doing something right as opposed to you be from something that I'm doing wrong. And so, I mean, you could be like, well, maybe you're not lifting right or whatever, but the my point be being is that we're doing the right things. Like we're doing what we're supposed to do. And so, you know, if there's gonna be some hiccups along the way, and every like everyone that goes to the gym, I don't know anyone that's ever gone to the gym is like I've never been hurt ever. Like Alex: Ever. Aaron: everyone gets something. and so that's just kind of part of the part of the thing is just figuring kind of figuring it out. Is there anything else besides your bicep that's been giving you that's been cranky? Alex: No. Well it's not by my it's just my forearm, man. Like it's literally just like something something in this Yeah. And Aaron: just right in there. Yeah. Those are Alex: like there's like a part of me's like, 'cause I shoot a lot when we play basketball, probably much to the annoyance of many of the people that I play with, but I've Aaron: Yeah. Alex: also been shooting around like after every gym session too. Aaron: Mm-hmm. Alex: And so now I'm not shooting around after gym sessions. and taking it light on the weight 'cause think that was still aggravating it. So even when I'm not like lifting weight, like I'm still doing this other thing that's annoying. Aaron: Yes. Yes. Alex: So Aaron: Have you noticed the pain go away when once you've stopped doing that? Or like not go away but lessen? Alex: It's like I just did like the thing right now where I'm like, it actually it's not nearly as painful as it had been like the last what's today, two probably like f Sunday was really bad. And so I was like, Aaron: Yeah, yeah. Alex: what's g the irony, so that's why I think it's basketball. Like I I played basketball on Saturday, I didn't do any weight I didn't do any weights, and then Sunday's my rest day. So Aaron: There's like something with like this motion. Alex: I have no like it's like it's not like a ball's heavy, like they weigh like two pounds. Aaron: No, but I I still think just like doing that motion over and over and over again, if you have already something that's aggravated is not good. Do I run into the same thing like on the treadmill? Like just walking. Like my foot started hurting. Like what the fuck is going on? Like, can I just can I just work out? Can I just do stuff and not not get injured because of it? but it I mean it's Alex: Just Aaron: not not crazy, but it's just like, god damn it. Alex: Well it's only discouraging from the wow, what's the word? The progressive old overload standpoint. Where's there are still things I am like my lower half of my body going great. Aaron: Totally fine. Yeah. Alex: not the part of the body that I am most trying to make larger muscular wise, so that sucks, but it's still working there. Aaron: The other thing that I n I started doing too because I was doing seated leg press and I got up to a pretty heavy weight. I mean, I was still doing like thirteen reps on it, but like the last rep I did, I was like, that didn't feel good in my lower back. and so I just decided what I'm gonna do, and I talked to my coach about this too, is just like I'm just gonna lower the weight and just really focus on just really, really, really slow, like up and down. Like as it's really just about Time under tension for your muscles more than anything. So it kind of goes against the progressive overload. But at the same time, I'd rather not progressively overload my injury and then make it so I can't do anything. Yeah. And Alex: Yeah. I never can work out. Yeah. Aaron: so that's what I I kind of started doing. I was like, I'm just gonna like kind of scale it back and just really just focus on going super slow on all of those movements. and you want to know what? One of the because you do Bulgarian split squats, right? Is that in your routine for legs? I'm gonna. Alex: I don't think so. No. I don't do I do the other n I do the other Slavic do the do the other Eastern European one. That's it. Aaron: The Romanian deadlifts? Alex: That's it. It's Romanian deadlifts. Yep. Aaron: yeah, like it's it's crazy though, because like I'm only holding like I think I would have like 35s in each hand, so it's nothing crazy, but like the it's it's so fucking hard to do Bulgarian split squats. It's literally I was texting Josh and I was like the best part of my day is when I'm done with that set when I'm done with that set. Like I'm not no, not day, I mean week. When I'm done with that, I like Thank God I don't have to do this for another week. I hate doing them. But you wanna know what? my legs are really like great. Like like Loreto was like, she like grabbing my leg, she's like, Are you flexing right now? I was like, No. She's like, Why is it so hard? My leg, my leg. And I was just like, I don't know, 'cause like, Alex: Like Why are you saying that in front of the children? Aaron: yeah, it's like 'cause I go to the gym. I don't know, I don't know. Like, I guess so. It was just like, and I kind of attribute that to obviously just a lot of things, but I recently, not recently, probably for the past month or two been doing Bulgarian split squats and those, man, those mess your legs up. I they're they're always sore a couple of days later for two or three days. So those are great. I don't know why I brought that up. because it's not a lot of weight. I I think when we're trying to put a ton of stress on like I gotta keep increasing that weight, increasing that weight, I just I'm always worried that even though I'm I'm not doing like three reps, but I'm just like, is this I'll tell you what, every time I do like the the seated leg not a leg extension, it's seated leg press, I just imagine my knees blowing up. Every fucking time I do. I'm just like, this is so much weight and it's not like a brag I think there's people to Alex: Yeah. Please, please. Aaron: way more than this, but that's what I think about. So another is like, I'm just gonna I'm gonna go a little bit lighter on the weight and just go really, really slow and maybe take it maybe a little easier on the old joints. But yeah, that's I d I know exactly exactly what you're talking about. And anyone that goes to the gym knows exactly what you're talking about too. but yeah, that's I think I think as far as like again, those it's funny because even when I looked at that picture that you posted two weeks ago, that before and after picture, especially in your shoulders, why isn't it going to the next picture? Alex: It's a video. Aaron: there we go. it's like massively different. And you actually have this like You have vascularity in your shoulder, which is really hard to get. but yeah, so it's whatever you're doing's working. It's easy to get caught because you see yourself every day, right? So you're s it's easy to get caught in that trap of I don't think this is I don't I'm not seeing it. All you have to do is look at an old picture of yourself. Alex: Real talk the everyone this is gonna blow up. Everyone's gonna listen to this part. Like also real talk, I start asking myself the question if the amount of work going into it is worth it. Like there's like a part Aaron: Mm-hmm. Alex: of me where it's just like, should I just be like the I go to the gym three times a week week maintenance, like stay where you're at. Focus on diet and things like that. and then I have to remind myself, eventually it'll probably get there. I'm just trying to supercharge that for like the Hawaii trip. because Aaron: Yes. Yeah. Alex: it's like it's So I'm not like lying to everyone. Cause I think a lot of times we can just be like, yeah, f everybody can do it. Like you have to like meticulously plan everything. I have like the benefit of being able to work from home. I have the benefit of being able to like set my own schedule. I have the benefit of being able to afford a nanny. I have the benefit. Some people would say privilege, I guess, but like I have the benefit like of doing all these things. So I don't want anyone who doesn't have a lot of those same. Aaron: Privileges. Yeah. Alex: perks, if you will, to to think that they can do it the the way that I'm doing. Not to say that people can't. Like people have to make the choice the choices that like they want to make where they decide to put their time. Aaron: Sure. Yeah. Alex: But I'm getting more to like a realization where is it possible? 100%. But it's almost like the Michael Jordan thing where he starts crying about like giving up his family. He's like, you guys have no idea what I had to sacrifice. Obviously I'm not Michael Jordan, but I get that like a little bit more. Like there are things and it's and I'm we're not even talking like cheeseburgers or giving up you know, like the stupid things that you everyone should probably give up for a healthier lifestyle. it's like the these just like weird little like all right, I don't have time for this person today. I don't have time for that person today. And I Aaron: Sure. Yeah. Alex: I have to be okay with that. If Aaron: Sure. Yeah. Alex: I wanna hit the goals that I wanna hit. Aaron: Right. I mean I and but that can be applied to literally everything in Alex: Anything. Yeah. Aaron: in anyone's life. it's just what's I think that's why Lloyd was saying you gotta f you kinda have to find your Y man, because if you don't have a Y it's easy to just be like, fuck this. Alex: Dude. And it's like it's like one of those things too. I I think part of like where some frustration from today is coming is just the gym has been kinda packed. And you know how like we Aaron's like way more positive than I am about this. Like, you wanna know what I like? I like when people aren't at the gym. like I it's like I Aaron: I love it when people aren't at the gym. I have I ever said I love a pack gym? Alex: I was like, ever every like everyone should go to the gym except for my gym. Don't go to the gym that I go to. Aaron: Ha ha ha ha! Alex: Cause I have to like watch people who are like taking up equipment and stuff like that. I'm just like, dude, like so it's this dude. I'm just gonna do a very specific story. It's this guy who weighs he had some sort of major leg injury, but looks like the leg injury was probably caused by being a fat ass. and he comes in three times a week. And just sits on like this machine that can't be rep like k it's a fly the fly machine. Aaron: The tech deck. Yeah. Alex: and he will just sit there and not use the fly machine for about five minutes. Then he'll start his exercise. And I know that there's like, well, yeah, well like that's just like basic Everyone knows that you're not Aaron: Gym etiquette. Alex: supposed to do that. Like obviously not everyone knows that. And so Aaron: Yes. Alex: I've like started to become this asshole. Even if I'm not using the thing he's going to use today, I just wonder if like, say, how long are you gonna be on this? And then he starts doing the workout. I'm like, G like there's you're gonna break your other leg too, bro. Like like get GTFO. and then seeing like home girl who's like definitely gonna throw her back out at some point. like she was looking at me 'cause I was doing ten ten lateral ten pound lateral raises for my shoulders. And like she's like doing I think she was using like 20 or 25s and she's the one I make fun of all the time where she's just like fla like like she's a bird flapping her wings trying to get out of the water. I'm like, you get the hell out of here. Go home. You're gonna hurt yourself. You're Aaron: Yeah. Yeah. Just flailing. Yes. Yes. Alex: like in my way. Like just just go home. So it's good to be back at the gym, but there if I could like selectively eliminate people from it, it would be just such a better experience and it'd be more efficient and effective. Aaron: Yeah, I think I think I inadvertently stole a a piece of equipment because there is this family of I wanna say three. Is it as a as a no it wa Alex: Is this the people we've talked about before where like he brings his teenagers? okay. Aaron: no, this is another god just like what time do I have to come here when this doesn't happen? Like school started. You should be in school. But it was a mom, a dad, and a son. And the son, I mean, maybe just graduated high school, I don't know. But it was they They were using five of the the cable machine things. And luckily I they weren't using at when I walked in there, I didn't they might have been using it, but I just went there and sat like, there I could see they're on three of them. So I went and took one. And they kinda gave me a weird look, but it like, dude, you can't take everything. You can't take everything. I d I d I d I'm sorry. I don't care. And if they would have asked, like, hey, can we work in here? Sure. I Alex: Yes. Aaron: don't have a problem. In between, then not a problem. but yeah, it's I don't know, dude. I Again, I still wanna make our I still wanna Alex: Don't get me started on Gen Z. Just kidding. Aaron: do a welcome to the gym. We're glad you're here. Let's go over some rules video. that just everyone everyone should have to watch. Everyone should have to watch. Alex: been a lot a lot of like s not small, like some things like our major, like a lot of like medium, minor, and major annoyances in my life. And I'm just like, just wanna burn the I want to burn the entire world down. But honestly, like getting back into a good sleep cycle is like helping that. Like Aaron: Some people just want to watch the world burn. Yeah. yeah. Alex: I sleep like shit whenever I travel and so like that's starting to get back to like I had like a ninety four sleep score last night. So I was Aaron: Nice. Alex: feeling great. Even though it doesn't sound like it. I know everyone's like, Doesn't sound like it, Alex, but it's getting better. It's getting better. Aaron: Ha ha ha. Alex: It's getting better Aaron: Okay, let's get that let's bump those number up to 100. But that's I Alex: Yeah, good lord, good lord. Aaron: think that's the the what we gotta say is just be nice at the gym. Do what you're supposed to do. Don't be a douchebag. Don't for Christ's sakes, stop lifting in front of the dumbbell rack. My God, every time I go there, there's somebody doing shrugs right on top of the fucking dumbbell rack. All you gotta do is take two steps back. That's all I got. I don't care you doing the shrugs are great. Do them. Take a couple steps back. And like, and it's every time that especially when I'm doing the farmers carry, because every time there's someone doing that, and I'm always like, you know, I'll have like 80s. I'm like, all right, we gotta get and they're mad that I want to put the weights back. Also, learn where did the fucking weights go? So I went to go put like the 80s back one time, and like there was 65s there, and so I had to go, yes, yes, and so then I Alex: Doesn't it say the number on it at yours? That's crazy. Aaron: had to go over to like I was like the not the 65 spot had something else in it. So I had to go put it in like I just put it the forty five and then actually what I did is I set the weights down, I moved the weights where they went and then I put my weights there. Cause I'm a good I'm a good person, damn it. Alex: He puts his shopping cart back too. Aaron: Yes, absolutely. I don't want cartnark on me. Alex: It's funny. The dumbbell thing is kind of funny because there's like literally these last couple of days have been like no room. Like no room. And it's so frustrating. And Aaron: Yeah, yeah, yes. Alex: so I was doing I was doing like the bicep curls, whatever, hammer curls. And I just like so the weight racks right here. And I just like this small little space where like a bunch of kettlebells are sitting. I'm like, all right, this is where I have to do it. Cause there's like nowhere I can stand where Aaron: Yes. Alex: I won't be wanted for sexual assault. So I'm gonna Aaron: Yes. Alex: have to just stand right here. Sorry, everybody. Aaron: Yes. Yes. Or the guy God, just gonna get me on all these tangents. Alex: There's so many people. Aaron: Well the other guy that had I'm not joking, dude, he had six sets of dumbbells by his by his bench. Like Alex: Saw a lady with that this morning. She had three, which I g is less is fewer than six, but I'm still just like, no, no, come on, dude. Like Aaron: And it and it sounds like I'm exaggerating. I should have taken a picture, but I don't want to get on Joey Swell's list of minding my own business. So I just I complain on this on Alex: Six is insane. Aaron: this podcast instead. but yeah, six. I mean, he wasn't even like super setting. He just had six there. He was doing something and then would walk away for a while, come back and maybe I maybe grabbed a different one and then started, but like yeah. Alex: Still. Aaron: Insane. Absolutely insane. Don't be that person. Don't be that person at the gym, people, please. B Alex: Wish I had billions of dollars to be like just getting because like s squat rack, the seated leg press, a bench, and like up to r like a hundred I don't use a hundred, but like up to a hundred dumbbells, and then some just like a basic cable machine. But all of that is incredibly expensive. Aaron: Yes. It's all I need. Yes. Yes it is. but yeah, that's that's there's there's always something that annoys the shit of me at the gym. But luckily I just listen to my music and keep to myself and then luckily there's enough equipment that if someone's, you know, grab assing around, I can just go somewhere and do something else. But for the I'd say the majority of it is fine. The majority is fine. Like I think most people at the gym are They kind of know the rules and they know what they're supposed to do. They're just the occasional assholes that do something that Alex: Yeah, even even Betty d lifting too weight, like she's not na like she's not she's annoying 'cause I'm just like it pissed me off 'cause some guys like like went up to her and it's a dude who like I respect at the gym is like, whoa, you're doing great. Like if you know her, tell her to stop doing that. She's going to hurt herself. Like what Aaron: I know. I know. Alex: are you celebrating that for, dude? It's insane. Ugh. No, she's not. D double double surprised. Surprise, Aaron: Is she hot? then no no excuse. No excuse. Alex: surprise, puppy surprise. Aaron: but yeah, there you go. That's that's what I do. Alex: On that note, great talking with everybody. we'll check in next week and go be unsexy. See ya everybody.
