- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Hi there, and welcome to another episode of Rise Up, Live Joy Your Way.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: I just want to take a quick moment to say thank you.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Thank you for taking some time out of your day, whether it be morning, afternoon, or evening when you're choosing to listen to this, for you to just take that time to spend with me.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Today I wanted to actually uh talk about the topic of journaling.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: So oftentimes in my client sessions, and I know in many other uh many other coaches talk about journaling as well as therapists and psychologists, um, they we we to we all talk about the importance of journaling.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: And there are some of my clients who kind of roll their eyes or just are like, oh, journaling.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: It just seems like this, it's it seems like a um an exercise where they don't necessarily understand the benefits right away.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: Um I kind of equate it to um the analogy of the bamboo tree, where uh whereby you know you plant the seeds for the bamboo tree and you you're taking care of it, you're fertilizing it, you're watering it, and year one passes and nothing happens, year two passes and nothing happens.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: You go a few years and then suddenly you've got this 80-foot tree.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm not saying that the effects and the benefits of journaling will take, you know, five or six years, but sometimes we s need to start a process of and and start a new habit of something.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: We don't necessarily see the uh benefits immediately.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: It takes a little bit of time for it to evolve, but there really truly is reasons why journaling is so helpful.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: And oftentimes people don't want to necessarily put pen to paper.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: I will say that there I I believe in pen to paper.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: I do think that there is uh plenty of science out there that talks about how when we give our our brains that opportunity to really have that that output channel and we're actually using our own hand to write whatever comes to mind onto paper, it really releases and gives gives that extra space for us to process what we're actually thinking.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: However, that's not to say that journaling by typing into your phone or typing into an app or on your computer isn't is not good.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Uh it's really truthfully whatever works for you.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: But there are benefits to journaling, and there are I just wanted to go over, you know, what are some of the top reasons uh that that journaling can be helpful?
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: First and foremost, I think that journaling really does help organize our thoughts.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Um we have so many thoughts that run through our head on a daily basis, and they are almost, it's almost sometimes you feel like it's a ping pong ball or or a ping pong uh uh a pinball machine, right?
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: But there are several different balls happening at the same time.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: And our mind is just racing, and so when we take the time to just sit down and and write out free flow what's coming to mind, it does give us the space to put stuff on paper, but then also start organizing our thoughts because as we're journaling on one thought, we'll be able to think it through, write out exactly what's coming to mind about that thought, and then we can move on to the next one.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: So it really does help with that organization, which also leads to the the positive effects of journaling from the place of, you know, a lot of times we'll journal about things that are challenges or struggles, and it allows us space to process through what we're thinking about the the challenge or the or the struggle, and it allows us space to maybe step back a little bit and to be able to see what possibilities are are there, you know, and and oftentimes I'll talk about this with my clients of is there another way to think about this?
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: It's it's rooted in this concept of flexible thinking.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: But when we journal and we're journaling out what's challenging us and we're able to almost step into that observer role because we're writing everything out, we might be able to see it in a new light, which then fosters hope and allows us to see that there might be another way to approach the situation or just to um really think about the situation in a different way, which uh just gives us space to um process through what's coming up for us.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Other reasons why journaling is so important, uh when they're really good experiences and we're journaling on a really good experience, it gives us a chance to relive that great experience, to really create in a mental image and then put it down on paper of what that amazing experience was.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: So in the moment we're able to relive it, and then of course, if we keep that handwritten journal or even if it's digital, we can go back and revisit that whenever we may need to anchor back into that, into a positive memory or a positive thought.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Um, it allows, again, when we're talking about challenges and things, it does allow for that release of any anxiety that might be coming up, or just it allows us a space, a sacred, safe space to process through whatever uh anxious thoughts we might be having, um, which goes with the idea of creating a sense of mindfulness by journaling and getting out on paper.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: We no longer have to ruminate on it, we don't have to think about it anymore, and we can get present with the here and now.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: So it's it's really about you know being able to uh create that that sacred space for us.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: It also creates a space for just uh learning and and and the ability to uh boost our own self-discipline.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Um and then really honestly, the biggest reason, or one of the bigger reasons that I really love the concept of journaling is it does give space to find those things that we might be grateful for.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: Uh it really cultivates a gratitude practice because as we're journaling and we're writing out the things that are happening, even if they're challenges, we can also write about the things that might be going well and be able to really create space to not just process through the negative things, but to create a space to process through all the things that are going right for us, which just creates that ability to cultivate and build a really deep gratitude practice.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Because as we've talked about before, gratitude and the practice of gratitude breeds optimism.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: And from optimism, optimism, we can see everything that is possible.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: So ultimately, I hope this was helpful.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: I hope it gave you some reasons as to why journaling may be more than just a busy, busy exercise, but rather um rather a really positive way to give yourself sacred space to process through what's coming up, as well as give yourself the ability to reflect on the things that are going right.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Oftentimes uh in in my sessions with clients, one of the ways that we really talk about um how we combat a negative thought spiral is to just be able to hone in on the one right thing.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: And sometimes when we give ourselves that ability to just have that space to process through everything that we're thinking, out of that will come the things that we're grateful for, and we'll be able to identify the one or two or several things that are going right for us.
