- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Evans Clinic in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Adam here, and you're about to listen to a hypnosis session all
- 0:42about mindfulness. I was working with a client that
- 0:46was a very, very high achiever, very high standards, and was
- 0:51meticulous in their planning. They would constantly be
- 0:54thinking about what they needed to do, when they needed to do
- 0:57it, to the extent that even when they were doing the things that
- 1:01they were planning, they were then thinking about the very
- 1:04next thing that they needed to do.
- 1:06And what that meant is that they were always focused on the
- 1:09future and never really feeling present and enjoying the fruits
- 1:15of the labor that they'd worked very hard to achieve.
- 1:18And what this does is it goes back, it uses regression to a
- 1:21time when they were a gymnast to tap into, a time when they did
- 1:26have that ability to feel really mindful and connected to their
- 1:29body and present in the moment. There's various metaphors and
- 1:33analogies used to highlight the futility of constantly focusing
- 1:38on the future and never actually being present.
- 1:41Some of those metaphors might resonate with you, but what's
- 1:44really powerful about this is parts therapy.
- 1:47And it came up because the client used a particular phrase
- 1:51and she was using we to describe her as an individual, which let
- 1:56me knew that there was almost a committee of different
- 1:59subconscious parts working together.
- 2:01And a good therapist has sensory acuity to pay attention to the
- 2:05details that a lot of therapists would miss that we was crucial
- 2:10because that committee of subconscious parts was obsessed
- 2:14with constantly planning, constantly achieving, constantly
- 2:17moving forward and mitigating risk.
- 2:19But it didn't have a part within that committee that was present
- 2:23and enjoying the moment and celebratory.
- 2:27So the parts there are pretty element of that in creates what
- 2:30I call a minister of mindfulness, a responsibility.
- 2:34And the reason I called it a minister is that some people
- 2:37believe these parts are ego States and they are ego driven.
- 2:40They're driven by a desire to be important, responsible,
- 2:43meaningful. So the minister of mindfulness
- 2:46introduced that part. It's got one job and that is in
- 2:49certain situations to be fully mindful, fully present and
- 2:53extract all the value it possibly can from that
- 2:57particular moment. And that working with the other
- 2:59parts in terms of parts integration can be a very
- 3:02powerful shift. And the client reported that
- 3:05they did feel immediately different and they could really
- 3:08resonate with some of the attitudes.
- 3:12For example, a lot of animals, particularly dogs, they're
- 3:17clearly mindful. They are fully in the present
- 3:19and you know they're when they're excited, they're excited
- 3:22when they're eating, they're really enjoying their food.
- 3:24So having a bit more of that golden retriever energy in their
- 3:28life would be very, very useful. It was created for an
- 3:31individual. You might not be this obsessive
- 3:34planner and have checklists in your head all the time, but you
- 3:38still might want to be more mindful.
- 3:40Accept the suggestions relevant to you, disregard the ones that
- 3:43aren't. And if you do like the idea of a
- 3:45customized session, have a look in the show notes, the
- 3:48description, or visit my website adamcox.co.uk and you will be
- 3:52able to schedule a completely free consultation call.
- 3:55We'll have a chat, and it could very well be that we end up
- 3:57working together. For now, though, find a quiet,
- 4:00comfortable place where you won't be disturbed.
- 4:03Relax and enjoy the session. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 4:28you breathe in, breathe in that slow, relaxing breath.
- 4:36And as you exhale, feel a wonderful feeling of release,
- 4:44just releasing any feelings of tension, stress, or worry as
- 4:50your body breathes out. That's it.
- 4:53And as you breathe in and breathe down, give permission to
- 5:01your unconscious mind to do the breathing because you can make
- 5:08yourself breathe, but you breathe when you sleep, and you
- 5:14don't have to think to breathe. So just think of your diaphragm
- 5:22right there near your belly and just allow it to do the
- 5:27breathing for you. Your diaphragm empties your
- 5:36lungs, fills them up with each breath, getting deeper and
- 5:45deeper, relaxed. That's it.
- 5:53And the deeper you breathe, the more relaxed you feel.
- 6:00And the more relaxed you feel, the deeper you breathe.
- 6:09And I wonder if you're able to think of a time running, perhaps
- 6:21on cycle paths surrounded by trees, or maybe a trail that
- 6:30leads into the forest. I want you to think of a time
- 6:35when you found your rhythm where you didn't have to think of 1
- 6:41foot going in front of the other.
- 6:44It just happened unconsciously all by itself.
- 6:51You can breathe unconsciously, your heart can beat faster
- 6:56unconsciously, and you can run unconsciously.
- 7:04And therefore, it's easy in this moment to allow your unconscious
- 7:13to start recalibrating, to keep everything that's good and just
- 7:22add one additional ingredient so that anxiety is reduced and all
- 7:33of the wonderful emotions are enhanced.
- 7:41I want you to imagine that there are two ways that you could
- 7:46enjoy that run. Imagine that your body is
- 7:52physically running, but your mind is thinking of later that
- 7:59day or the following day, going through checklists In your mind.
- 8:04What haven't you done? What could you do?
- 8:06What needs to be done? Even if most of it is just
- 8:12duplicating thoughts you've already had, There will be
- 8:20smells on that run. Certain flowers.
- 8:28The forest itself has a smell. There would be smells that you
- 8:33missed by being lost in your own mind.
- 8:40There would have been a temperature, perhaps of the
- 8:44sunshine on your skin, perhaps the sensation of a breeze if you
- 8:54noticed. You could even hear your heart
- 8:58beating in your chest, or that pulse on your temple.
- 9:06But all of that is invisible. I want you to get a feeling.
- 9:13Then there are some people that exist in a part of the world
- 9:21where they don't get to see trees with green leaves, with
- 9:28the smells of the forest. And yet on that run, it was
- 9:34available to you. Now we need to think about
- 9:40something delicious that you ate.
- 9:49The purpose of food is not merely to extract the nutrients
- 9:55from what you eat. If that was the case, we would
- 10:00not have taste buds on our tongue and a nose very close to
- 10:07our mouth and eyes that see what we're eating.
- 10:14I want you to get a feeling then.
- 10:18How you experience the world is through your senses.
- 10:26It's possible for someone to have a delicious thing to eat
- 10:33and completely forgot they've ever eaten it.
- 10:38But it's also possible for someone to find joy, pleasure, a
- 10:47sense of wonder from eating something as simple as an
- 10:53orange. 200 years ago, oranges were very rare, and only the
- 11:07very wealthy would create big greenhouses in the gardens of
- 11:14their mansions to create orange trees, to grow orange trees,
- 11:24just for the pleasure of having a few oranges every now and then
- 11:32throughout the year. Just imagine what it would be
- 11:40like to go back in time to one of those orange trees to see an
- 11:47orange. To know that this is rare, that
- 11:5499% of the people around you would never ever experience such
- 12:00a thing. And imagine how counterintuitive
- 12:09it would be to peel that orange and not smell that citrus smell,
- 12:20to bite into an orange and not be aware of the juice or the
- 12:26flavours or the texture. Imagine spending a year to grow
- 12:33an orange, and at the point while you're eating the orange,
- 12:40you're thinking of that other thing that needs to be done
- 12:42tomorrow. If your unconscious agrees that
- 12:50actually it makes no sense to spend all of that time and
- 12:57energy meticulously planning if you never truly enjoy the very
- 13:03thing that you're planning, just let me know by nodding your
- 13:05head. And if that's true for a wealthy
- 13:14aristocrat 200 years ago, it is equally true for you now.
- 13:23And I want you to imagine that you're drifting back in time and
- 13:28watching yourself as a child doing gymnastics.
- 13:36Don't go back into that childlike version of you imagine
- 13:40yourself at your current age seeing that child and knowing
- 13:48that they prepared and trained hard.
- 13:52But imagine them doing a performance, a routine.
- 13:56Maybe you can recall the music they did it to, the moves.
- 14:06And I want you to get a sense of real connection and pride, but
- 14:13most of all curiosity. That young version of you knew
- 14:20intuitively how to get the balance right.
- 14:28They prepared their routine, they trained, they practised,
- 14:35they attended classes. But when it came down to the
- 14:41thing they were preparing for, in that moment, they were
- 14:47mindful, fully present in their body, connected to the feeling
- 14:54of the centre of gravity, the weight on the balls of their
- 14:59feet, the music, everything. And no one taught that younger
- 15:08version of you how to be fully present.
- 15:12You just knew. What's the point in preparing,
- 15:17planning and practising if you're going to be vacant at the
- 15:23very point where you get to the place you were intending to be?
- 15:31I want you to observe the clues of that version of you mindful,
- 15:40see how attentive they are, how connected to their own body they
- 15:47are. I want you to get a sense that
- 15:52mindfulness is not complicated. It's simply being present,
- 16:00accepting whatever happens in the moment, paying attention to
- 16:06whatever your senses are telling you, what you hear, what you
- 16:10see, what you feel. Your senses are the gateway to
- 16:21your experience. I want you to imagine floating
- 16:28into that younger version of you and feeling how it would feel to
- 16:33be mindful like that. Perhaps you can remember that
- 16:37routine, how it started, how the music went, a certain move or a
- 16:43sequence that you did, and just notice how easy it was to be
- 16:51focused, to be aware. Just allow all of those neural
- 17:00pathways that know how to get the balance right to reawaken.
- 17:08And then imagine that routine is finished.
- 17:16And just imagine that feeling of pride, accomplishment.
- 17:22Maybe you can remember yourself smiling.
- 17:26All of it is evidence of being fully connected to the.
- 17:33Now imagine floating back to that current version of you.
- 17:43But take that mindfulness with you, and then imagine there in
- 17:50that forest, it's like a table. Maybe a boardroom table, maybe a
- 17:58round table. And I want you to imagine
- 18:03inviting all the parts that represent we.
- 18:10When you say to yourself, we've got to get on top of this.
- 18:17We can't rest on our laurels. All the people that are included
- 18:23in we, those parts of your subconscious mind, invite them
- 18:28to attend the table. Maybe there's parts that
- 18:35represent discipline, vigilance, preparation, mitigation of risk.
- 18:41Invite them all. Whoever is we, they need to be
- 18:45there. And you might imagine them as
- 18:48people or characters or just energy.
- 18:52But when all the parts responsible for we are there,
- 19:00let me know by nodding your head.
- 19:18And I want you to start because you're chairing this meeting by
- 19:23thanking them. Thank all the parts and say you
- 19:27would not have accomplished what you have accomplished were it
- 19:31not for their meticulous planning, preparation,
- 19:36vigilance, and dedication. Everything you have
- 19:40accomplished, you can give credit to them.
- 19:48If they accept that appreciation, let me know by
- 19:51nodding your head. But then I want you to warn them
- 20:00that if something doesn't change, you risk everything you
- 20:07have built. I want you to tell them that the
- 20:12one thing missing is appreciating everything that was
- 20:19the planning was for. I want them to get a sense then,
- 20:28unless the things you plan, you're present for when you get
- 20:34there, You risk losing motivation because there isn't
- 20:42sufficient payoff for all of that hard work that you're
- 20:46doing. What's the point in preparing so
- 20:55hard if you never get to enjoy the very thing that you're
- 21:01building? I want you to imagine someone
- 21:05spending years and years and years building a custom built
- 21:12car and they have all of the people needed.
- 21:18Mechanics, engineers, designers, everyone meticulously builds the
- 21:28car and once it's built, they then focus on building the next
- 21:36car. But they never really enjoy the
- 21:40car they've built. I want you to ask all of those
- 21:46parts around that table, if they understand that if you don't
- 21:54taste the fruits of your labour, you will lose the motivation to
- 22:01grow them for the next harvest. And if all parts agree, let me
- 22:06know by nodding your head. And I want you to tell them by
- 22:18introducing one additional part, you get to be even more
- 22:26accomplished, even healthier, because cortisol and adrenaline
- 22:37suppress the immune system. Whereas all of those feel good
- 22:42biochemicals, the oxytocin, the serotonin, the endorphins and
- 22:49even dopamine, well, they improve your health.
- 22:56They enhance your sympathetic nervous system, they make you
- 23:01sleep better, and they charge your batteries faster to take on
- 23:06the next thing. And all that's needed to do all
- 23:12of that is to have one part, one part, which is the minister of
- 23:20mindfulness. Their job, Their job is to pay
- 23:27attention to things in the moment, to be present, to feel
- 23:37accomplished, and to make evaluations as to how well
- 23:43you've done after all of that preparation.
- 23:50And I want you to imagine calling forward whichever part
- 23:53in your subconscious mind would be most useful and appropriate
- 23:58for this responsibility. Someone that seems present, they
- 24:04don't need to be concerned with the planning and the preparation
- 24:07and the mitigation of risk. All the other parts have got
- 24:12that under control. This part, this part pays
- 24:18attention, is fully present, perhaps as the energy of a
- 24:27golden retriever dog, attentive, enthusiastic in the moment.
- 24:38And when this part comes forward, offer them a seat at
- 24:42the table and let me know by nodding your head.
- 24:49And just think of how this part appears, their energy, how they
- 24:55seem, and ask them, are they willing to take this
- 25:00responsibility to enjoy being more in the moment?
- 25:09And if they say yes, let me know by nodding your head.
- 25:15And there is a condition, not for this mindful part, but for
- 25:19all the other parts, that when the minister of Mindfulness is
- 25:27being mindful, all other parts must wait.
- 25:34They are not allowed to plan, worry, mitigate risk while the
- 25:42Minister of Mindfulness is being mindful.
- 25:48When the mindfulness and the moment has passed, then those
- 25:54other parts, well then they get back to doing what they do best.
- 26:02Your unconscious mind will accept the suggestion.
- 26:06The more mindful you are, the more you enjoy what you've
- 26:11accomplished. The more mindful you are, the
- 26:16more your whole nervous system calms down as you realise your
- 26:25own evaluation of your identity wasn't quite right.
- 26:33For years, you thought that you had the identity of an anxious
- 26:38person, and you never did. You have the identity of a
- 26:48prepared person with high standards.
- 26:53Those high standards meant that you didn't want to become
- 26:56complacent. You're not anxious, you are
- 27:03outstanding. And put that to a vote to all of
- 27:09those parts. If they agree to reject the
- 27:13identity of anxiety and embrace the identity of being mindfully
- 27:22outstanding, ask them to raise their hands and if they all
- 27:26agree, let me know by nodding your head and you will notice
- 27:32subtle differences in the next days and weeks that follow.
- 27:38Moments of evaluation of anxiety become preparedness, future
- 27:46planning. But you will allow yourself to
- 27:54hold the same standard of an expert tailor.
- 28:01Measure twice, cut once, not measure 8 times and think of
- 28:09something else while you're cutting.
- 28:12And if all parts agree to this new standard, then don't be
- 28:15surprised if overthinking goes down and present mindful
- 28:23thinking increases without any reduction in your standards.
- 28:29In fact, your standards will increase if all parts agree to
- 28:36this new dynamic. A dynamic where all parts of you
- 28:43work in harmony to accomplish, to experience, but also to
- 28:51enjoy. Let me know by nodding your
- 28:54head. Thank all the parts again for
- 29:00this new dynamic harmonious relationship and see a new level
- 29:06of enthusiasm in all of them. Some of those parts were getting
- 29:10jaded like a greyhound, always chasing the rabbit but never
- 29:17catching it. And now they get to enjoy the
- 29:21journey and the destination and imagine yourself floating all
- 29:27the way back to the present, taking all of these wonderful
- 29:30changes with you. Take a deep breath in through
- 29:35your nose and out through your nose.
- 29:40Wiggle your fingers, wiggle your toes.
- 29:44Connect and calibrate into the here and the now as I now count
- 29:48from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 29:53Starting to count 123 waking up 456 more alert 7-8.
- 30:00Open your eyes. Open your eyes, 910.
- 30:04Wide awake, wide awake, wide awake.
