- 0:22Speaker 1: Yes, just can't watch a spooky movie. She likes some
- 0:35Speaker 1: kind of lovey. Twilight was written badly, so instead we
- 0:39Speaker 1: did it. It was family.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Love.
- 0:51Speaker 1: That was so good, Thank you. It was it better
- 0:54Speaker 1: than my impron I'll just make this up right now
- 0:57Speaker 1: on the spot for a night's tale.
- 1:02Speaker 3: So good.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I had a better I had a line at the
- 1:05Speaker 1: end that actually and then I changed it rite at
- 1:07Speaker 1: the end, So we did Adam's Family But like whatever,
- 1:11Speaker 1: Hi everyone, it's still comfy Tuesday. My name is Nathley Katona.
- 1:15Speaker 1: You're on my YouTube channel for to all the Men.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I've Tyler redd before your Weekly look at I almost
- 1:22Speaker 1: just said every day misogyny. Your weekly look at every
- 1:25Speaker 1: day misogyny. And this is my co host.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Hi friends, I'm Julia Washington, the host of pop Culture
- 1:30Speaker 2: Makes Me Jealous, where we analyze pop culture through the
- 1:33Speaker 2: lens of race or gender and sometimes both.
- 1:36Speaker 1: And this was almost not meant to be because all
- 1:40Speaker 1: of the tech things were mad. They's so mad.
- 1:43Speaker 2: The technical gods are angry today.
- 1:46Speaker 1: So if we seem for us, it's because we didn't
- 1:48Speaker 1: get to just sit in the green room for fifteen
- 1:50Speaker 1: minutes chatting. Yeah, and Penelope has already parkourd off of
- 1:56Speaker 1: the desk hardcore Parkour. All right, well, today we are covering,
- 2:01Speaker 1: if you couldn't tell by my fantastic musical renditions, we
- 2:05Speaker 1: were covering the Adams Family. And when I say the
- 2:08Speaker 1: Adams Family, I mean the good one, the nineteen ninety
- 2:12Speaker 1: one version. Yeah. Okay, but this is a question. Did
- 2:16Speaker 1: you ever watch the original black and white TV version.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Every now and again at my grandparents' house because whatever
- 2:25Speaker 2: channel did the reruns for it, and we didn't have
- 2:28Speaker 2: cable growing up, so I did see it in the
- 2:31Speaker 2: summers on I mean obviously by the time we were
- 2:33Speaker 2: kids it was in reruns anyway.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah, but yeah, I was a big nicket night kid,
- 2:38Speaker 1: so I've seen it, and I've seen the monsters.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Yeah, the monsters.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Then.
- 2:45Speaker 2: I feel like the Adams Family, though, was more taboo
- 2:49Speaker 2: in my house because, if you'll recall, was raised in
- 2:53Speaker 2: a conservative Christian home.
- 2:55Speaker 1: J just couldn't go to camp or learn about space
- 3:00Speaker 1: or or you know, spooky things. Yeah, and I think
- 3:05Speaker 1: the monsters were like the the water.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Down version of a Adam's family, and that's probably why
- 3:13Speaker 2: it wasn't as like no, no, no kind of situation
- 3:19Speaker 2: because I don't remember if, because the nineteen ninety one
- 3:24Speaker 2: version was definitely like a no.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Go oh a no go a.
- 3:28Speaker 2: It was a no go.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Uh. We have one viewer, so this is a great
- 3:34Speaker 1: time for me to pause and actually remind you that
- 3:38Speaker 1: we have a live comment feed that if you are here,
- 3:44Speaker 1: we can't see you unless you put something in the
- 3:46Speaker 1: comment feed. Jules did a very vana demonstration, so make
- 3:52Speaker 1: sure to go follow the pop Culture makes Me Jealous
- 3:55Speaker 1: YouTube channel since we share this show, and if you
- 3:58Speaker 1: are watching the replay, go ahead and your thoughts there too.
- 4:01Speaker 1: This is truly like the only place except for Patreon,
- 4:05Speaker 1: that you can just have free access to, like in
- 4:08Speaker 1: the moment stream of consciousness, comment on our stuff. Yeah yeah, yeah, truly.
- 4:19Speaker 2: But what my opening my statement of like Adam Stanley
- 4:22Speaker 2: was definitely a nog As I was watching it and
- 4:24Speaker 2: the opening scene when we first get eyes on Angelica Houston,
- 4:27Speaker 2: my first.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Thought was, damn, damn, ma'am, you are stuck ning always stunning,
- 4:35Speaker 1: m h always stunning. My no, we were a huge
- 4:42Speaker 1: Adams family house. Like we watched all of the movies, Like,
- 4:46Speaker 1: I haven't seen any of the recent ones, but I
- 4:49Speaker 1: watched Wednesday and then didn't like it.
- 4:52Speaker 2: But is that because you're a purist, like a nineties purist.
- 4:56Speaker 1: No, it's not because I'm a purist. It's just a
- 5:00Speaker 1: I truly feel that Wednesday takes out the entire heart
- 5:08Speaker 1: that is the Adams Family franchise, like it was Adam's
- 5:12Speaker 1: Family for a reason. Sure, yeah, they're an ensemble, and
- 5:20Speaker 1: as an ensemble. Now, I did try to turn on
- 5:23Speaker 1: the cartoon because I was very curious if when they did,
- 5:27Speaker 1: you know, the newfound like claymation animation that they did
- 5:32Speaker 1: in the most more recent videos dress sexy, like Ifmas
- 5:38Speaker 1: and Martsha are all over one another, are so horny
- 5:41Speaker 1: for each other, they're so horny, Like Okay.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I was like, this is such a beautiful example of
- 5:51Speaker 2: when a couple is in love and like genuinely wants
- 5:56Speaker 2: to be together, which we don't often have, especially when
- 5:59Speaker 2: you think about the nineties.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Correct, And here's the thing about the Adams family that
- 6:05Speaker 1: always gets me tickled. And by the way, just because
- 6:08Speaker 1: like Adam's Family and the Adam So I thought the
- 6:10Speaker 1: original Adam's Family was Adam's family values. And I just
- 6:15Speaker 1: think it's because Joan Cusack, isn't it and therefore it
- 6:17Speaker 1: made it a bigger movie on my radar. But the
- 6:22Speaker 1: nineteen ninety one Adam's Family is the reboot that they
- 6:27Speaker 1: did for US millennials, and it stars Angelica Houston, a
- 6:32Speaker 1: very young but a very talented Christina Ricci, so she
- 6:36Speaker 1: was so good I stand, and Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester.
- 6:44Speaker 1: And this is the one where Uncle Fester has been
- 6:47Speaker 1: missing for decades and then an impostor comes to take
- 6:53Speaker 1: the Adam's fortune and shenanigans ensue, and then spoiler alert,
- 6:58Speaker 1: at the end, it does actually end up being Uncle
- 7:01Speaker 1: Fester because there's only one man who looks like that. Yeah,
- 7:06Speaker 1: I think so. The thing about the thing that always
- 7:09Speaker 1: tickles me about the Adams Family is that it's it's
- 7:17Speaker 1: meant to be like, oh, they're scary and they're outsiders
- 7:21Speaker 1: or whatever, and they're like weirdos. But it's like we've
- 7:27Speaker 1: made that up in our minds, and like the story
- 7:30Speaker 1: never plays that out. Because I was like, why is
- 7:33Speaker 1: it that everyone's real quick convinced that the Adams family
- 7:37Speaker 1: is a real alternative lifestyle when they're literally the happiest
- 7:41Speaker 1: people I know. They're the happiest people.
- 7:44Speaker 2: They are so rooted in family and being in like
- 7:47Speaker 2: so focused on family and honoring those who like lived
- 7:52Speaker 2: before them, and just again a demonstration of like the
- 7:56Speaker 2: parents actually wanting to be together and loving each other
- 7:59Speaker 2: and not sniping at each other and just really showing
- 8:03Speaker 2: us like, hey, this is kind of what the kind
- 8:05Speaker 2: of love that.
- 8:05Speaker 1: You should probably look for. Well, and I love all
- 8:09Speaker 1: of the joke structures in the Animals family because none
- 8:12Speaker 1: of the jokes are at the expense of anyone else
- 8:15Speaker 1: in the family. It's not like Gomez is always digging
- 8:19Speaker 1: in at Martitia and Pugsy is a real consensual partis
- 8:25Speaker 1: of him in whatever weird shit Wednesday has decided that
- 8:28Speaker 1: they will do, and they're like real siblings. That's why
- 8:32Speaker 1: I turned off the cartoon because the first person who
- 8:35Speaker 1: spoke was Pugsy and he sounded too intelligent and I
- 8:39Speaker 1: was like, that's not my Pugsly, and then I turned
- 8:41Speaker 1: it off.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, because Pugsly in this movie doesn't really
- 8:44Speaker 2: have a lot to say.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Well, and I remember that in this show, like that
- 8:49Speaker 1: is Pugsley's vibe.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Yeah, he's more of a quiet character, which makes sense
- 8:53Speaker 2: too when you think of it or not, like not
- 8:55Speaker 2: it makes sense. But like when they go to the
- 8:58Speaker 2: Halloween party and he dresses like Uncle Fester, it's like
- 9:02Speaker 2: one of those things. It's like out of admiration because
- 9:06Speaker 2: they're different, but the you know what I mean, Like
- 9:09Speaker 2: he admires Fester for who he is versus like.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Not that was a dumb point that you get it.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like we don't get to do ur We
- 9:20Speaker 2: didn't get to do our get ready for the show.
- 9:23Speaker 1: We did it camping.
- 9:24Speaker 2: So we're a little today.
- 9:26Speaker 1: We but he we all have that uncle or that
- 9:31Speaker 1: aunt who is our favorite uncle or aunt. I also
- 9:35Speaker 1: enjoy that winsday. So one of the really big things
- 9:40Speaker 1: that I enjoy about the Adam's family is it's not
- 9:44Speaker 1: even that like no one's outwardly mean to you, but
- 9:46Speaker 1: like everyone is respected and heard in that family. Yeah.
- 9:51Speaker 1: So when Wednesday is the first person who starts catching
- 9:54Speaker 1: on that Uncle Fester is an Uncle Fester or there's
- 9:59Speaker 1: more to the story or whatever, no one is like
- 10:02Speaker 1: outwardly telling her like you're insane, right crazy, We've accepted
- 10:06Speaker 1: this to be true. Why can't you like, oh that Wednesday?
- 10:10Speaker 1: And when they go to the school for the little
- 10:13Speaker 1: performance and the teacher is expressing to Martitia like, oh,
- 10:20Speaker 1: we did some we did some projects on our heroes. Yes,
- 10:25Speaker 1: and Wednesday did her great aunt who was burned at
- 10:29Speaker 1: the state for a witch or whatever. There's never any like,
- 10:34Speaker 1: at no point are the Adams family in on the
- 10:37Speaker 1: fact that that's actually weird to like basic white people.
- 10:41Speaker 1: So Martos' is like, oh, yes, that is one of
- 10:44Speaker 1: our favorite family stories. And so naturally the only connection
- 10:52Speaker 1: I can make is that the Adams family are just
- 10:55Speaker 1: a Gothic version of my Croatian family.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I believe it based on some of the stories you
- 11:00Speaker 2: told me. I did write down Hall of Heroes because
- 11:03Speaker 2: on my notes, because I think that is one of
- 11:05Speaker 2: the greatest scenes of the film, because it also highlights
- 11:09Speaker 2: just how much they value the family lore versus placing admiration.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Because I think in the Hall of Heroes you had
- 11:22Speaker 2: George Bush and Barbara Bush and like all of these
- 11:25Speaker 2: other faces that you know, you look at them and
- 11:29Speaker 2: you're like.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Kids don't know anything about George Bush.
- 11:32Speaker 2: And also scratch your head like like why, And then
- 11:36Speaker 2: here comes this family, this little girl who's like I
- 11:38Speaker 2: am so I love my family history so much that
- 11:42Speaker 2: I respected enough to share with you yeah, and like
- 11:45Speaker 2: fully understands it versus again, like like you said, who
- 11:50Speaker 2: I couldn't in nineteen ninety one, I couldn't have told
- 11:52Speaker 2: you what the fuck George Bush was doing.
- 11:54Speaker 1: No, so like just like literally picking the president because
- 11:58Speaker 1: you know that someone has to be president of.
- 12:01Speaker 2: This that or like your parents are like, you know,
- 12:03Speaker 2: who should we should admire is George w is George
- 12:09Speaker 2: hw h W. This is ninety one. But still that
- 12:13Speaker 2: was a great scene to me. And then the other
- 12:16Speaker 2: thing that I wrote down was I love how everyone
- 12:19Speaker 2: assumes that the Adams family is a bunch of dummies
- 12:23Speaker 2: when really there that's just their prejudice, Like they're not
- 12:26Speaker 2: Like the Adam's family just doesn't see the world the
- 12:30Speaker 2: way that everyone else does, which is so freeing. But
- 12:34Speaker 2: it's like because of that, everyone just assumes they're stupid.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, I just got chills because now we
- 12:38Speaker 1: can connect it to the other thing that we've been
- 12:41Speaker 1: obsessed about this week, which is Britney Spears. Like everyone
- 12:44Speaker 1: is just assuming that Britney is in crisis. And I'm
- 12:48Speaker 1: not saying that she's out of crisis, right, but we're
- 12:51Speaker 1: not taking into context that you know, there's mental illness,
- 12:55Speaker 1: there's medical abuse, there's a lot of distrust for society
- 12:58Speaker 1: due to things that she had to live through. And
- 13:01Speaker 1: with the Adams family, they're just so comfortable in themselves,
- 13:05Speaker 1: much like a naked Britney spears twirling with knives. They're
- 13:11Speaker 1: just so comfortable with themselves that at no point, just
- 13:16Speaker 1: it's not that they don't pick up that you're questioning
- 13:20Speaker 1: their culture or their family structure or their lore. They're
- 13:25Speaker 1: just not questioning it with you, like it's not making
- 13:28Speaker 1: them falter on who they are as people.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Right, exactly exactly, and even when, like you said, even
- 13:34Speaker 2: like weeks since early on that Martitia isn't quite sold
- 13:39Speaker 2: on this being the true fester. But she's still loving
- 13:42Speaker 2: her husband, she's still supporting him through it. But she's
- 13:44Speaker 2: also proceeding with in with caution to still protect her
- 13:48Speaker 2: family until they know for sure.
- 13:51Speaker 1: And I thought it was done so.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Beautifully because it wasn't uh I told you so, or
- 13:57Speaker 2: I was concerned or like this this that usually comes
- 14:01Speaker 2: when you read this.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Guy into our house, yeah and ask questions. Yeah.
- 14:06Speaker 2: It really highlights just how solid their relationship is because she's, like,
- 14:11Speaker 2: my husband has to work through this. I'm going to
- 14:14Speaker 2: support him even though I have doubts. And then when
- 14:18Speaker 2: it all does kind of start to fall apart, she's like,
- 14:20Speaker 2: all right, let's solve this problem. And it's not like, oh,
- 14:23Speaker 2: my stupid husband, Oh I have to fix this. Oh
- 14:26Speaker 2: why didn't you listen to me. It's very much like
- 14:29Speaker 2: an understanding of their partnership and the partner m I can't.
- 14:35Speaker 2: I feel like I'm saying the same shit over and
- 14:36Speaker 2: over and over.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Again because I think. I mean, honestly, I stopped taking
- 14:41Speaker 1: notes on the movie because I was like, I have
- 14:42Speaker 1: no notes on this family really would move into this
- 14:46Speaker 1: family's home tomorrow.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I mean I would get freaked out because you know,
- 14:50Speaker 2: I don't like intense and scary things, but the whole
- 14:54Speaker 2: Like another note I wrote, so it's I have like
- 14:57Speaker 2: no like you have no criticism.
- 14:58Speaker 1: In the movie.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Another note I wrote it was, this is just a
- 15:01Speaker 2: movie of finding belonging in an unexpected way.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Like yeah, because and everyone fels good about it at
- 15:09Speaker 1: the end. What so what was Fester's amnesia name? Was
- 15:14Speaker 1: it Harold? Was his name? Gerald? Jerry Gerald? It was
- 15:19Speaker 1: a George? Yeah, it was Yeah, when Fester doesn't realize
- 15:23Speaker 1: that he's fester. He has this really toxic mom figure,
- 15:26Speaker 1: which is probably something that we can go into. He
- 15:29Speaker 1: has this very toxic mom figure who has basically made
- 15:33Speaker 1: it impossible for him to not feel like an outsider,
- 15:37Speaker 1: Like she revels in his violent tendencies because it gets
- 15:41Speaker 1: it helps her get her way. But then she's also
- 15:45Speaker 1: only allowing him to socialize with her so she can
- 15:50Speaker 1: keep in control of him. And then through this con
- 15:55Speaker 1: he does I mean, honestly, what I do as a
- 15:58Speaker 1: person who's been used in a used just goes, oh
- 16:01Speaker 1: my gosh, are these people okay? I will become their
- 16:05Speaker 1: uncle like and he becomes very endeared to the kids,
- 16:09Speaker 1: year and Grandma and Lurch. And it's when when he's
- 16:17Speaker 1: so upset because his mean mommy isn't going to let
- 16:22Speaker 1: him go to the kids play and he goes, but
- 16:24Speaker 1: I've been helping them with them with it and she's
- 16:27Speaker 1: like why and he's like, well, it's all part of
- 16:29Speaker 1: the bit, but you can very much still it's it
- 16:32Speaker 1: out part of the bit.
- 16:33Speaker 4: Yeah, And it's almost it's like you watch him start
- 16:39Speaker 4: to realize that he fits there, like that it makes
- 16:41Speaker 4: sense that he's there even though he doesn't believe that
- 16:44Speaker 4: he's a part of the family.
- 16:46Speaker 2: He's not really Uncle Fester. There's something about that family
- 16:50Speaker 2: that makes him feel valuable and whole. And that's the
- 16:55Speaker 2: other thing that I really loved about it, too, is
- 16:57Speaker 2: that Fester doesn't find romantic love to make him whole.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Fester just finds his community to make him whole.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Yes, And it all comes to head in a beautiful,
- 17:09Speaker 1: choreographed moment which we know. I love with the mamushka yea,
- 17:13Speaker 1: And I remember I remember being a kid and that
- 17:15Speaker 1: used to be my favorite scene and I would dance
- 17:17Speaker 1: the mamushka. That's adorable. Yeah, because, as you know, my
- 17:24Speaker 1: family likes to poka. To me, it was the same thing.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Yeah, And like there are so many again, honestly, my
- 17:37Speaker 3: family is gonna be so pissed when I text them
- 17:39Speaker 3: all and be like, I know that we thought that
- 17:41Speaker 3: my big fat Greek wedding was the truest representation of
- 17:45Speaker 3: our family we've ever seen.
- 17:46Speaker 1: But have you guys revisited the Adam's family? Can't you
- 17:54Speaker 1: guys looked into Adam's family in nineteen ninety one? Wait
- 17:58Speaker 1: for that response. And because they have that big family
- 18:02Speaker 1: party because they're so excited that Fester has been found,
- 18:07Speaker 1: so if going to share it with all of their family,
