• 0:04
SPEAKER_00: The real risk is not simply a market crash.
• 0:06
SPEAKER_00: It is the combination of market prices,
• 0:09
  SPEAKER_00: withdrawal timing,
• 0:10
SPEAKER_00: and a household that has no rule for where spending money comes from.
• 0:14
  SPEAKER_00: October 13, 2026, Bitesize Retirement.
• 0:18
  SPEAKER_00: The portfolio recovered.
• 0:20
SPEAKER_00: The retirement plan did not.
• 0:21
SPEAKER_00: That sounds contradictory until you look at the money that had to leave
• 0:25
SPEAKER_00: the account along the way.
• 0:27
SPEAKER_00: A market index can eventually regain its old high while

• 0:40
SPEAKER_00: of those returns were available to the person who needed to spend money every month.
• 0:45
SPEAKER_00: Consider a couple who retire with $2 million in investable assets.
• 0:49
SPEAKER_00: They need $100,000 from the portfolio during their first year.
• 0:53
SPEAKER_00: The amount is not outrageous relative to their wealth,
• 0:56
SPEAKER_00: but it is substantial enough that timing matters.
• 1:00
SPEAKER_00: To get from $1.3 million back to $2 million
• 1:01
SPEAKER_00: without additional withdrawals would require roughly a 53.8% gain.
• 1:04
SPEAKER_00: That is arithmetic, not a forecast.
• 1:24
SPEAKER_00: A 30% market decline alone requires about a 42.9% gain to recover.
• 1:30
SPEAKER_00: The withdrawal widens the gap.
• 1:32
SPEAKER_00: Now imagine a second couple with the same $2 million starting balance,
• 1:37
SPEAKER_00: the same market exposure, and the same total spending.
• 1:40
SPEAKER_00: The difference is that some of their essential spending is already covered
• 1:44
SPEAKER_00: by dependable income, and they have a clearly defined reserve for the rest.
• 1:48
SPEAKER_00: They might still experience a painful decline.
• 1:51
SPEAKER_00: They might still have to sell assets eventually.
• 1:54
SPEAKER_00: But they are not forced to treat every market day as a referendum on
• 1:57
SPEAKER_00: whether they can pay next month's bills.
• 2:00
SPEAKER_00: Their risk has not disappeared.
• 2:02
SPEAKER_00: Their decisions have become more deliberate.
• 2:04
SPEAKER_00: The accumulation habit becomes a retirement liability.
• 2:07

• 2:30
SPEAKER_00: and deliver very different spending outcomes depending on
• 2:33
SPEAKER_00: whether weak years This is often called sequence of returns risk.
• 2:38
SPEAKER_00: The important part is not the label.
• 2:40
  SPEAKER_00: It is the experience.
• 2:42
SPEAKER_00: Needing to sell something today that you would rather hold until tomorrow.
• 2:45
SPEAKER_00: The familiar instruction to stay invested is not a complete answer.
• 2:50
SPEAKER_00: It describes how to behave with long-term capital.
• 2:53
SPEAKER_00: It does not identify the source of next quarter spending.
• 2:56
SPEAKER_00: Nor is keep two years in cash a complete answer.
• 3:00
SPEAKER_00: Cash can reduce the need to sell after a decline, but it creates its own questions.
• 3:05
SPEAKER_00: How is the reserve replenished?
• 3:07
SPEAKER_00: Does the household refill it after markets rise,
• 3:10
SPEAKER_00: at a calendar interval, or only when its balance falls below a threshold?
• 3:14
SPEAKER_00: What happens if stocks remain weak longer than expected?
• 3:17
SPEAKER_00: Who has authority to change the rule?
• 3:20
SPEAKER_00: The decision begins with the bills, not the investments.
• 3:23
SPEAKER_00: Separate spending into three categories before selecting a withdrawal technique.
• 3:28
SPEAKER_00: First are obligations that continue regardless of the market.
• 3:31
SPEAKER_00: Housing, food, utilities, insurance, and essential care.
• 3:36
SPEAKER_00: Second are commitments that matter but can be rescheduled.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_00: Replacing a car, major travel, or helping an adult child with a purchase.
• 3:45
SPEAKER_00: Third is spending that can respond to conditions without seriously changing quality of life.
• 3:50
SPEAKER_00: These categories are not moral judgments.
• 3:53
SPEAKER_00: They are a way of discovering which expenses must be funded even
• 3:57
SPEAKER_00: when selling investments is unattractive.
• 3:59
SPEAKER_00: Suppose a household spends $120,000 a year with $72,000 in essential obligations,
• 4:02
SPEAKER_00: $28,000 in meaningful but adjustable expenses, and $20,000 in optional upgrades.
• 4:13

• 4:15
SPEAKER_00: The household still needs a strategy for all spending.
• 4:17
SPEAKER_00: But protecting the $22,000 essential gap is a different problem from promising

• 5:17
SPEAKER_00: restrictions, inflation characteristics, and counterparty risks.
• 5:22
SPEAKER_00: Cash provides immediate access but may lose purchasing power over time.
• 5:26
