Latest / Mental Per4mance Daily with Adam Rutz / The Cost of Comfort
Transcript
- Adam Rutz: I want you to take a second and think about the most expensive thing that you purchased this year. What did it cost you? And how did you justify making that purchase or investment? Now, flip it back, think about something else. We're deep into the year. Think back to the goals that you set for yourself at the beginning of 2026. Are you actually getting closer to them? Because One of the most expensive things you can buy in life doesn't have a price tag. It's comfort. Comfort has a cost. And if you stay there long enough, comfort can turn into complacency. And complacency is dangerous if you're chasing excellence. Now, excellence is gonna look different for everybody. Your definition of excellence might look completely different than mine. But I think there's one thing that we can all agree on. Excellence is continuing to move closer to the person that you know you're capable of becoming. And that usually requires discomfort. It requires doing the workout when you'd rather stay in bed. Making the call that you've been avoiding for days. Taking the extra reps after practice. Having the difficult conversation that you know is gonna make you better. Doing the work when nobody's making you do it. This episode's coming out on a Saturday. College football's on, right? And it'd be pretty easy to sit on the couch all day and watch games. And look, I'm not telling you to not watch football. I love football. Recovery matters, downtime matters. Enjoying your life matters. But don't confuse recovery with complacency. Keep the main thing the main thing. Before you get comfortable today, ask yourself what is one uncomfortable thing I can do today that's gonna make me better? Then go do it. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Push yourself, get 1% better, and keep stacking wins. Because comfort might feel free in the moment, but becoming less than what you know you're capable of being is an incredibly expensive price you're gonna have to pay. Mindset, process, discipline, execution. That's mental performance daily.
