Transcript
- 0:05DrC: Hey, have you ever had an idea on your heart?
- 0:08DrC: A dream that feels so right, so perfect for you, but it stays locked away because of a tiny, nagging voice of doubt.
- 0:18DrC: You tell yourself you're not ready, it's not the time, it's not the right time, and most common one of all, who am I to do that?
- 0:26DrC: Well, today I'm gonna share the very personal origin story of this podcast.
- 0:30DrC: A journey that started with years of insecurity and one powerful moment that finally pushed me to press record.
- 0:36DrC: We're gonna explore those made-up barriers we all create and how to find the courage to finally take the next step.
- 0:44DrC: The other day I had the immense honor of attending the YWCA of Rochester and Monroe County Annual Luncheon.
- 0:55DrC: And the keynote speaker was the one and only MC Lite.
- 0:58DrC: Yes, the one and only MC Light.
- 1:01DrC: Now, if you know me, you know that I've always said that music saved my life.
- 1:07DrC: I have a very special place in my heart for female MCs as well.
- 1:11DrC: But what truly struck me wasn't just her presence, it was her story of growth.
- 1:16DrC: You see, she said that throughout every part of her career, she invested in her own development.
- 1:22DrC: She took classes, acting classes, for two years before she even started acting.
- 1:27DrC: And every time she evolved, she researched and she invested in herself and developed the skills she needed to pursue whatever she wanted.
- 1:36DrC: And it made me think, how often do we stop at the desire?
- 1:40DrC: We say, Oh, I'd love to do that, but we don't take the next step of researching what we need to be successful.
- 1:47DrC: It brought me right back to 2019 when I started my doctoral program and learning all about wellness and workplace burnout.
- 1:56DrC: The World Health Organization had just classified burnout as an occupational phenomenon.
- 2:01DrC: And I was thinking, who knows this stuff?
- 2:04DrC: Like, wow, how do I get this information out there?
- 2:07DrC: The idea of the podcast was born, but so was doubt.
- 2:13DrC: And here's the transparent vulnerable moment.
- 2:17DrC: Because of my own insecurities, I put that idea on the shelf.
- 2:21DrC: I kept doing presentations and consulted with leaders, but I knew I wasn't reaching everyone I could.
- 2:27DrC: So the thought of the podcast kept coming back, and it kept coming back, and it was always followed by a wave of self-negative talk.
- 2:36DrC: Who's gonna listen to me?
- 2:39DrC: My voice sounds horrible.
- 2:41DrC: All these obstacles, these barriers, and I now realize they were completely made up.
- 2:46DrC: They were excuses my fear was creating to keep me comfortable in my insecurity.
- 2:52DrC: I'm gonna repeat that.
- 2:54DrC: My emotional wellness was suffering, and I felt like a failure because I had this critical information to share, but my inner critic wouldn't let me.
- 3:14DrC: It was a heavy internal struggle.
- 3:17DrC: We'll dive into the moment that changed everything right after this short break.
- 3:24DrC: Stay with us.
- 3:25DrC: It was immense.
- 3:47DrC: Then in July, that thought came rushing back to me and it wouldn't go away.
- 3:52DrC: And about two weeks later, one morning, around 5 a.m., you know, that time when you're in a light sleep, just before waking up, I heard my dad, who passed away three years ago, whisper in my ear.
- 4:07DrC: I heard him clearly say, You got this, kid.
- 4:11DrC: Let's go.
- 4:12DrC: And I even felt his breath against my ear.
- 4:16DrC: I immediately jumped out of bed and said, I'm starting the podcast.
- 4:20DrC: And my husband, God bless his soul, just looked at me, half sleep and said, Okay, okay, let's go.
- 4:25DrC: Come on.
- 4:26DrC: He never gave me a reason why I shouldn't, only supported why I should.
- 4:31DrC: That was the moment my mindset began to flourish.
- 4:35DrC: The fear was still there, but the purpose was finally louder.
- 4:40DrC: From that morning on, I evolved.
- 4:42DrC: I dove deep into researching everything, how to start, what a podcast even is, how to upload, how to market.
- 4:48DrC: I took MC Light's example and I invested in my own development.
- 4:52DrC: So you might be listening to this and thinking, that's great for you, Dr.
- 4:56DrC: C, but I'm overwhelmed.
- 4:57DrC: How do I actually start?
- 4:59DrC: Well, let's make it real simple.
- 5:00DrC: Here are three practical ways you can take today for any project, big and small.
- 5:07DrC: First, name it.
- 5:10DrC: Get really clear on what you want to do.
- 5:13DrC: Write it down in one simple sentence.
- 5:15DrC: Take it out of your head and put it on paper because then it makes it real.
- 5:20DrC: Second, shrink it.
- 5:22DrC: The big dream can be intimidating.
- 5:25DrC: So, what is the smallest, tiniest first step you can take?
- 5:29DrC: Not launch the business, but Google domain names for 15 minutes.
- 5:35DrC: Not write a book, but maybe write a sentence, a paragraph.
- 5:39DrC: This is about creating forward motion, not no matter how small.
- 5:43DrC: And third, share it.
- 5:46DrC: Tell one person you trust about your idea.
- 5:48DrC: The moment you say it out loud, you create accountability and you also invite support.
- 5:54DrC: Remember how my husband reacted?
- 5:56DrC: Find your cheerleader.
- 5:59DrC: Naming it, shrinking it, and sharing it.
- 6:02DrC: That's it.
- 6:02DrC: That's how you begin.
- 6:04DrC: And on September 3rd, after taking my own first steps, I realize I released my first episode.
- 6:11DrC: And in just under a month, tomorrow it'll be a month that the Life Podcast was launched.
- 6:19DrC: In just under a month, we have reached listeners in seven countries and 72 cities.
- 6:26DrC: I've received messages from people about how an episode has helped them through a challenge, and that has brought so much joy to my heart because, after all, that was always the go.
- 6:37DrC: So imagine if I had continued to listen to my fears.
- 6:41DrC: So I want to ask you, what made a barrier are you holding on to?
- 6:46DrC: Are your obstacles real or are they a story you're telling yourself?
- 6:50DrC: If it's a story, it's time to reframe it.
- 6:52DrC: Your project, your gift is waiting for you.
- 6:55DrC: And I promise you, someone in this universe is waiting to receive your gift.
- 7:01DrC: Don't let perfection get in the way.
- 7:03DrC: My first episodes have volume issues and tones all over the place, but people aren't listening to that.
- 7:10DrC: They're not listening to the mistakes, they're listening to the message.
- 7:14DrC: So do it.
- 7:15DrC: Just start.
- 7:17DrC: So as we wrap up, my hope for you is this: take the first brave step this week.
- 7:24DrC: Give yourself a dream.
- 7:26DrC: Give it a name.
- 7:29DrC: Make it real.
- 7:30DrC: Break it down into small steps.
- 7:34DrC: So small you can't say no.
- 7:37DrC: And share it.
- 7:38DrC: Share it with someone who will cheer you on and support you and talk to you about resources that may be available that you don't know about.
- 7:47DrC: That's it.
- 7:48DrC: That's the start.
- 7:49DrC: You don't need a perfect plan, you just need progress.
- 7:52DrC: Your gift is way worth sharing.
- 7:55DrC: And someone out there is waiting to receive it.
- 7:58DrC: Until next time, keep on learning, stay inspired, continue to flourish, never stop evolving.
- 8:06DrC: I'm your host, Dr.
- 8:07DrC: C, and this is the Life Podcast.
