Transcript
- 0:00Hey, everyone, it is the last Thursday of the month, which means
- 0:04you are getting some inside looks at our bonus content over on Patreon. Hopefully
- 0:11you have already gone over to see some of the free Patreon bonus content.
- 0:16We had an extra clip with al Renthia Carter on Love Is Blind season six,
- 0:22and we had some blog posts about what happens when I start to feel
- 0:27foolish. One of them is a very spooky ghost story. So if you're
- 0:32missing Halloween, go on over to Patreon. The paid for bonus content that
- 0:38will be teased in today's episode are from our March's Misogyny Meltdown, which was
- 0:44all about International Women's History Month, and our Team Tolerator check in, where
- 0:50we celebrated even more women's work by having Darcy come on to review with me
- 0:57one of my favorite new movies, Lisa frank in Stein. So for the
- 1:00Misogyny Meltdown, you'll all hear a little bit of my opening monologue a game
- 1:07ged and I played called Feminist Icon, and then a little bit of the
- 1:11discussion that Julia Washington, a'll Ronthia Carter, and I had about historical women's
- 1:18representation in media that eventually turned into all women's representation in media. If you
- 1:26would like to join the Patreon, don't forget that there is a seven day
- 1:29trial in All Tears. That should be enough time to at least watch maybe
- 1:36three of our bonus episodes, whether they be Team Tolerator check ins or Misogyny
- 1:42Meltdown. I hope to see you all over on the Patreon. Drop me
- 1:47a DM if you have any questions about any of the Tears. Hey,
- 2:14everyone, this is a Misogyny Meltdown, the only show where we use celebrating
- 2:19women as a witty dig at male fragility. This episode, we will be
- 2:23celebrating International Women's Month. Can you believe this month was coined for us girls
- 2:30all the way back in nineteen seventy five. That means we're roughly fifty years
- 2:37out from when men offered us a token holiday instead of fixing the infrastructures we
- 2:45suffer under. Thanks fellas, I'd like to take a moment to remind you
- 2:51of some things women have accomplished within the last few years. You know,
- 2:55COVID hit us hard when it comes to who was successful and re entering the
- 3:00workforce. It turns out it wasn't us, But you know, one of
- 3:07us was able to snag a pretty historic job. What you no, No,
- 3:15not the tildwives. Ugh, their views are archaic, not historic.
- 3:21I said historic historic, Thank you, Yes, much better. I am
- 3:30not an expert in sports, but I hear it was a good year for
- 3:35women in sports. Serena Williams won the Jackie Robinson Sports Award at the twenty
- 3:39twenty three n Double ACP Image Awards for her excellence in tennis, business and
- 3:46philanthropy. And then we had some blonde put a little known sport on the
- 3:53map for all of us. You know, I really think it's nice that
- 3:58she's been taking making her music back from a man and costing him money,
- 4:02and then doing the nice charitable thing and making other bozo's money. Mm hm.
- 4:09We call that balance. Margaret Atwood published her first book of poetry in
- 4:14over a decade. Dearly is a collection of poems about love, loss,
- 4:18and the passage of time. Let's all hope we take inspiration from this collection
- 4:25and start to veer away from hurtling towards the world she built in The Handmaid's
- 4:30Tale. JD. Happy International Women's History Month. Happy International Women's History Month.
- 4:38Do you think you have what it takes to surpass this International Women's History
- 4:43Month challenge. You know what, I'm going to say that, like,
- 4:46I hope I do, but if I don't. If I don't, it's
- 4:48because I'm just a humble man. It's like that song He's just a man,
- 4:54Just a man's right, because here on the misogyny meltdown, we humble
- 5:00men through the art of comedy. So and JD is a true ally and
- 5:05a true feminist because he allows me to do this to him. And that's
- 5:11the difference. That's why Ryan Gosling is an ally and everyone else isn't take
- 5:16notes, gentlemen take notes. Take notes. Okay, So this is how
- 5:21our game feminist icon is going to work. I am going to change my
- 5:27screen and probably weave to get out of the way. Yep, And there
- 5:30will be a feminist icon that you have to name, Okay, and then
- 5:34you have to tell me why I think they're a feminist icon because there are
- 5:40correct answers. Okay, gotcha, and I'm assuming also incorrect answers. Oh
- 5:45of course. Yeah. I feel like you're about to throw like really good
- 5:47ones at me that are gonna really throw me. Like I'm going to start
- 5:50out easy. All right, all right, you know I love a like
- 5:54ramp. Yeah, yeah, you can't. The million dollar question has to
- 5:59be harder than one hundred dollars question. And then don't worry. I told
- 6:04you to also come prepared, yes, so that you could redeem yourself a
- 6:10little bit. And you're going to try and throw me the misogyny expert.
- 6:15All right, let's have a misogyny meltdown and play feminist icon. Our first
- 6:23feminist icon. Who is this? That is? Oh my god, hold
- 6:29on, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Oh my god. Could you imagine if you
- 6:32got RVG wrong? It was like okay, like you know when you know
- 6:36it, and like it was like at the tip of my tongue. I
- 6:39was like, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god,
- 6:40Please don't fuck up. Why is she a feminist icon? Why is she
- 6:44not a feminist icon? First of all, like, Ruth Bader Ginsburg is
- 6:47one of the pioneers of Roe v. Wade, and she was one of
- 6:53the ones in the seventies that got that passed into law protecting women's rights and
- 6:58medical rights through abortion and other woman's services. Yeah. Sure, that was
- 7:03a fantastic answer. People should be clapping for you. The correct answer is
- 7:11she is the definition of but do you even lift? Bro? Okay,
- 7:15that's totally spot on. She totally is oh because she's lifting in that.
- 7:20I thought that was a microphone. See, I got all nervous. I
- 7:24got all nervous because I couldn't think of her name right away, and I
- 7:26didn't look at the details. And actually, actually, I'm pretty sure they've
- 7:30done scientific studies. I'm going a man's plain for a second here. They've
- 7:32done scientific studies that show that men actually don't pay attention to detail as much.
- 7:38And that's why I didn't notice that. Shit, do you even lift?
- 7:41Bro? Do you even lift? Bro? She's stronger than all of
- 7:45my exes. She was stronger. May she rest in peace than all of
- 7:47my exes, in all of my friends current partners. All right, so
- 7:55you almost watched that. That made me nervous, out rude. All Right,
- 8:01here's our next one. All right, let's see you know who this
- 8:03is? Okay? Hold on? Is that is that one of Henry the
- 8:09Eighth wives? Which one? Uh amberleyn? That is Queen Anne Bolin?
- 8:16Do you know why she's a feminist icon? Uh am? Okay, hold
- 8:18on? So a lot of my knowledge about amboln comes from the show The
- 8:24Tutors. I'm gonna say if we're going based on that and if it's historically
- 8:28accurate, I'm not positive that it is, but I'm going to guess because
- 8:33she I feel like she knew she was doomed, she saw it coming,
- 8:37but like she had a moment of like where she kind of like a little
- 8:41bit like crazy, but then she fucking took that shit. She fucking accepted
- 8:46and embraced it, and she stared that shit down and said, fuck you
- 8:48Henry. She never Actually she was very kind to him during her execution.
- 8:54I met metaphorically, Okay. I was like, no JD. None of
- 8:58them all King Henry's wives that he sent to death glowing reviews. They were
- 9:03like, I know that the King is doing this because of God. So
- 9:09discussion. Yeah, so that was that was an answer. It's actually because
- 9:16it takes a true icon to make a man break up with the pope and
- 9:20Catholicism just so you'd give him a blowjob. I don't know. Should we
- 9:24change the topic of the meltdown to Netflix being childish? No? I made
- 9:28notes for today, but also maybe whenever it's your show okay, audience put
- 9:35a pin in it. At one point, we will just melt down that
- 9:37Netflix is childish. But welcome Julia and a'l Renthia to the Misogyny Meltdown,
- 9:43and thank you for being the fierce strong women who are with me today to
- 9:46talk about other feerce strong women. Thank you for having us. Yeah,
- 9:52nobody could see me, but I was doing the year. I will remind
- 9:56you that people can see you. The Misogyny melt Down is a video for
- 10:01Oh, I should have put on my glasses and makeup. I forgot about
- 10:07that, you're sing out. I have been posting clips, video clips mind
- 10:13you on the internet and I've been liking them. Okay, well, so
- 10:20happy having an international Women's Month. The time of the year where you really
- 10:24know how people care about you and your work. Yeah. Performatively the time
- 10:31when you know perform when the performative actions come out, the performative actions.
- 10:35And I was trying to think about it because I don't think they ate.
- 10:39The Amy Winehouse movie comes out this month. I think it comes out later
- 10:43this year. I think it's a summer I think it's a summer film.
- 10:46So I was like, what was our performative like movie for March, and
- 10:52we didn't have one. We had Lisa Frankenstein and drive by Dolls and Love
- 10:56Lies Leading, which are all I categorize them all as queer movies. You
- 11:03know what's really offensive, though, is that Marky Mark has a movie coming
- 11:05out about a dog that he finds while he's running a race. And I'm
- 11:09just like, how dare you, Marky Mark? Like you're trying to convert
- 11:13all of us. Stop it? And it's like the what is it?
- 11:16What's the other movie about the dog that just came out like last year and
- 11:22the dude from Magic Mike Yeah, yeah Tatum And he's in the army and
- 11:28the dog helps him be in soldier No, because the dog's person dies in
- 11:33during service, so he has to take the dog home. Yeah, which
- 11:39is basically just you're a delivery guy, you know what I mean? Like
- 11:45like military, I mean military propaganda, Pagana one film, dog Propaganda's fine,
- 11:56Yes, we'll take dog propaganda. We loved dogs, We loved with
- 12:00that said, well, you know, I guess like the feminist thing for
- 12:03this month is probably Princess Kate, right, Oh my gosh, yes,
- 12:09where is Kate? Like I wasn't really interested because I was, you know,
- 12:13team Meghan and Sanna, you know what I mean. But now I'm
- 12:18gonna like the fantasy I have in my head is that she's been cool the
- 12:24whole time. Yeah, and it's been like you know what she's been.
- 12:28She's like the she's like Somelma Blair and legally blonde. Okay, okay,
- 12:33and Megan at first because she was buying into her terronalized misogyny okay, realizing
- 12:41that she was cool she's right away. And maybe she's in Santa Barbara with
- 12:46them, Meghan and Harry, and she can't take the kids because of the
- 12:50property of the crown. Yeah, and they're having a good time. They're
- 12:54having drinks on their Lani. I'm not mad at this. Yeah. Yeah,
- 13:01that's so much better because like my my innate Cabricorn personality of just having
- 13:07to be right and logical and the most right answer. I'm like, she's
- 13:11sick and she's resting, like she's like deathly ill and she is resting.
- 13:18Like I'm not allowing myself to have any fun bits about it. I did
- 13:22like when they were like maybe she's on the mask Sayer, I was like
- 13:26I would love that. Yeah, that's your show, I love it.
- 13:30What are so? I have some generalized tropes that I believe Hollywood, in
- 13:37order to make our dumb, dumb brains understand people put historical women in even
- 13:46if they don't deserve to be in that trope. So like we have our
- 13:52historical sluts, the hand Bolens, the Cleopatras, the Helen of Troyce are
- 14:01sluts. We have our martyrs, the people who like give up their family.
- 14:07I was trying to think about this today because I was thinking about the
- 14:11RBG movie that I did see and now and I looked at the movie poster
- 14:18today and can I remember the name of the movie? No on the Nsis
- 14:22of Sex. Yes, Oh that's right. THO was like Masters of Sex.
- 14:26That's another show. That's a different show, completely different. And I
- 14:33just remember how and this happens a lot with like historical women in film that
- 14:39at some point they in every scene they have to remind you, like this
- 14:43woman gets to be great at the expense of her children and her family.
- 14:50Aaron Brockovich. Aaron Brockovich, I was like, men are never great at
- 14:54the expense of me, whether or not I'm traumatized or not. Men just
- 15:00gets Oppenheimer just gets to make the bomb. Okay, that okay, So
- 15:05my meltdown part was literally outlining how Kitty Oppenheimer and Gene Taplocks wikipedias are more
- 15:15interesting than their characters in Oppenheimerto. I did not watch the which is the
- 15:24Bomb, which is fine because you know, you know my opinion, which
- 15:28was, I really wish I had that time back because I'm so mad about
- 15:31the portrayal of these two women and the lack of dimension that they had Kitties
- 15:37like a drunk who didn't want her kids the whole time, and then Jean
- 15:41had yes, she had psychiatry issues. But both of these women are highly
- 15:48educated, studying in fields that are male dominated, resorted diminished to the drunk
- 15:56and the slut A page Round members, thank you so much for supporting the
- 16:02show this month. As you know, for March, we are celebrating women
- 16:06and the work of women. So I have one of my favorite women here,
- 16:11Darcy from our wrestling episodes, and she's joined Elizabeth to talk to us
- 16:15about Fourror and that's what we're doing today. We're gonna celebrate Lisa Frankenstein because
- 16:22there's been nothing earlier since the Barbie Movie than Lisa Frankenstein agreed, I loved
- 16:30this movie. I So I've been going to cheap movie night pretty religiously.
- 16:37I go at least two or three times a month. Okay, So I
- 16:41am at a point where people are seeing trailers for the first time that I
- 16:47feel like I've been waiting on the movie for years. And that's how it
- 16:52was for like Lisa Frankenstein. I'm like, when's Lisa Frankenstein coming out?
- 16:56When I want it now? Right? I didn't know about it until I
- 17:02think, like I think it maybe like heard a little bit about it.
- 17:04But a month before it came out, I feel like I kind of like
- 17:11I was like, what is this? And I just knew right away.
- 17:12I was like, I'm going to see it regardless. I didn't really know
- 17:15what to expect, but I definitely exceeded my expectations. Well, I mean,
- 17:22right before I went to the movie, I found out that it was
- 17:23the same writer as Jennifer's Body, uh huh, and that was like,
- 17:27oh, okay, so this movie is going to be awesome, and it
- 17:32was. It sure was. Let me go ahead and read this little synopsis
- 17:36for everyone who didn't make it to the movie theater, although Lisa Fraankenstein is
- 17:41streaming. Dough asked me what platform, but I know you can rent it
- 17:44somewhere. Lisa Frakenstein is a twenty twenty four American comedy horror filmed directed by
- 17:49Zelda Williams in her feature length directorial debut We Love to See It, and
- 17:56written by Diablo Cody, the writer of Jennifer's Body. Another cult family classic,
- 18:04amazing family classic for sure. The film stars Katherine Newton, Cole Sprouse,
- 18:11Lisa, Liza. I saw that Z and went Lisa. That's that's
- 18:18where I would go to, Liza Soberano, Henry Elkinberry, Joe Krest,
- 18:25and Carla Eugeno. I've never been able to say her last name correctly.
- 18:30The plot follows a misunderstood teenage goth girl who meets and develops a relationship with
- 18:36a reanimated Victorian era corpse. And Cody has gone ahead and let us know
- 18:44that Lisa Frankenstein is in fact set in the same fictional universe as Jennifer's Body.
- 18:51Yes, yes, we're just about anything can happen, about anything going
- 18:56to happen. I where do you want to start. I mean we could
- 19:00maybe go through like the characters a little bit. Yeah. Yeah. Should
- 19:04we just gusha on Lisa for a little bit, Yeah, yeah we can.
- 19:10I love her and I didn't even realize that she is actually the same
- 19:15girl. It's in Freaky. Have you seen Freaky? I haven't seen Freaky?
- 19:19Oh you haven't. Oh it's get you. You would love it,
- 19:22you would love it. But she starts in that too, and it just
- 19:26kind of like makes sense. They have like a similar vibe, I guess
- 19:29kind of thing. But I loved the character, like front to back,
- 19:33Like she was just amazing. I love her acceleration into like goth clothes and
- 19:38like her attire that she was wearing. That was a big thing for it.
- 19:42Some background on Lisa. She is currently living with her father, her
- 19:48stepmother, and her stepsister because her mother was brutally murdered during a break in.
- 19:53Yeah, and it was only like a year or two before, right,
- 19:56Because men get remarried quickly quickly, and because her father did what a
- 20:03lot of men do and just band aid married someone else, he just fully
- 20:07expects that Lisa is over it too. Yeah, there's no therapy in the
- 20:12Lisa Frankenstein Universe, though there are self help books on tape, Yes,
- 20:21doing it in person, do it in person, or just keep listening to
- 20:25doctor Phil on a cassette tape right right. What I love the most about
- 20:30Lisa is she's insecure in the most confident way. Yeah. I think that's
- 20:37a really good way to put it. She realizes that she's a weirdo,
- 20:41and she's like, I'm just weird. So I'll just stand here quietly while
- 20:45my very pretty stepsister takes me to a party, or I will I'm pretty
- 20:52sure that the boy I like doesn't like me back, but I will write
- 20:56him a check yes or no letter and drop it in his life. Like
- 21:00she's just your quintessential like romantic team girl who's like, yes, I love
- 21:10like how when it opens it has like the like the cemetery, and like
- 21:14her like hanging out in the cemetery, and I just I love that it's
- 21:18like an it's like an abandoned cemetery in the middle of you know, it's
- 21:22in the middle of the cutthrough whatever that is between neighborhoods, I guess.
- 21:26But she's in love with this. I wouldn't say she's in love she's like
- 21:32enamored with this tombstone that has like a man. Actually, I don't know,
- 21:37how would you like a sculpture? It's like a bus, it's like
- 21:40a bust on top of the Yeah, and she just is so I don't
- 21:45she like makes what does she say? Like I wish I was with you
- 21:48or I wish I was with you. It's just it's so weird. And
- 21:52I love when she's telling Tappy's the sister, And I love when she's telling
- 21:56Taffy in the car like about it and he's like, that's really weird and
- 22:02she's like, no, no, it's like totally normal. Like I love
- 22:03how nonchalant she was about her hanging out in the cemetery, right, She's
- 22:08like, my mom's dead, I hang out in cemeteries. I have done
- 22:12what many sixteen year old girls have done before me, and I have created
- 22:18an entire backstory for a man that I will never know, and I'm in
- 22:23love with him. And that's fine. It's so good. It's so good.
- 22:30I also feel like she made up a lot about his backstory, but
- 22:34for because this is like eighties nineties. Yeah, I think eighteen eighty nine,
- 22:41I think is good. Yeah, it's the brink of the nineties for
- 22:45someone who doesn't have the Internet. She like knows a lot about the Corpse.
- 22:52She doesn't know a lot about the Corps. I didn't really think about
- 22:55that. I feel like, did we ever even get the name? Oh
- 22:59no, it's it kind of cracked out ar Like I'm looking it up right
- 23:04now because I was just wondering that too. I was like, do we
- 23:07just continue to call him the corpse because so he's I did notice he was
- 23:11credited as the Creature, Oh, which I loved because it the whole movie
- 23:18has like very universal monsters vibes, obviously with Frankenstein, and I was like
- 23:23going more towards Bride of Frankenstein, but it's also kind of like Creature from
- 23:29the Black Lagoon vibes, Like I just love like that old school monster vibe,
- 23:34and I just felt like Lisa frank And then also like the Lisa frank
- 23:38aspect of it, where it was just so bright and colorful and I'm not
- 23:42sure if it was intentional, but I hope it was. Annie and I
- 23:47looked it up because she's a text to me and she goes, am I
- 23:49late to the joke, or is Lisa Frankenstein a play on Lisa frank And
- 23:55I was like, I haven't heard that, so maybe it's just a wild
- 24:00coincidence. And then I googled it and they were like, no, we
- 24:03were paying homage to Lisa frank And I was like, that's why the dopamine
- 24:07hit me so hard, right right, I could totally see it. There
- 24:11was also I did a little bit of research because I thought it was really
- 24:15cool. Oh, her name is Lisa Swallows. We forgot to like put
- 24:19her full name in it, because like every time she gets a coffin the
- 24:23neighbor, like in school, they're like, Lisa Swallows, please come to
- 24:30the principal's office. And I just like, nobody ever like makes a joke
- 24:34about her name. No one ever talks about like that's being her last name.
- 24:40And I don't know why, it just it just kills me. It's
- 24:42so funny. No, it is funny, and it's even funnier that no
- 24:45one even says anything about it. Yeah, like like in this day day
- 24:51people would just be making fun of the name. I feel like most movies
- 24:53I feel like would make fun of the name, like at least have some
- 24:56character, especially because it's in a school. Yeah, and she has people
- 25:02be a mean to her, so it's like it could fit. Maybe she
- 25:04didn't want to, Like, I mean, I feel like there's definitely probably
- 25:08some type of maybe like an ideal. I don't know. I mean,
- 25:12the name is funny. I'm trying to think if like there was like you
- 25:15know what I mean, like if it's like stepping up in humor, you
- 25:18know what I mean, like yeah, not punching down. Yes, yes,
- 25:22but yeah. I also saw though that she named her Lisa after for
- 25:29weird Science. Oh that is the woman that they create. I've only seen
- 25:34it once, like a long time ago, but the woman that they like
- 25:37reanimate is her name is Lisa. Oh okay, just all of these tali
- 25:42ins. Yes, it's so so good. So we kind of talked about
- 25:48how it's a movie that's kind of about brief but it's also a movie that's
- 25:52kind of about puberty and it's honestly, when the credit started to roll,
- 25:57I looked at my friend and I went, I was just like really romantic
