- 0:00In Romans chapter 2, Paul says this in verse 29,
- 0:05"'No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God,
- 0:09and true circumcision is not a cutting of the body,
- 0:12but a change of heart produced by God's Spirit.
- 0:16Whoever has that kind of change seeks praise from God,
- 0:20not from people.'"
- 0:23What was he talking about?
- 0:25How do we get a circumcised heart?
- 0:29What is a circumcised heart?
- 0:33How do we seek praise from God
- 0:37and not seek praise from people?
- 0:41Listen in as we do a deep dive on this topic today.
- 0:46Welcome to the One Year Audio Bible Podcast.
- 0:49Today is July 15th.
- 0:51Now let's continue our journey
- 0:53reading through the entire Bible in one year.
- 0:56This week, we are reading from the New Living Translation
- 0:58for the Old Testament and for the New Testament.
- 1:06Numbers 23, 16 to 30.
- 1:11"'And the Lord met Balaam and gave him a message.
- 1:14Then he said, "'Go back to Balak and give him my message.'
- 1:18So Balaam returned and found the king standing
- 1:21beside his burnt offerings with all the officials of Moab.
- 1:24"'What did the Lord say?' Balak asked eagerly.
- 1:28This was the message Balaam delivered.
- 1:30"'Rise up, Balak, and listen.
- 1:33Hear me, son of Zippor.
- 1:35God is not a man, so he does not lie.
- 1:38He is not human, so he does not change his mind.
- 1:42Has he ever spoken and failed to act?
- 1:44Has he ever promised and not carried it through?
- 1:47Listen, I received a command to bless.
- 1:51God has blessed and I cannot reverse it.
- 1:54No misfortune is in his plan for Jacob.
- 1:58No trouble is in store for Israel,
- 2:01for the Lord their God is with them.
- 2:04He has been proclaimed their king.
- 2:07God brought them out of Egypt.
- 2:10For them, he is as strong as a wild ox.
- 2:13No curse can touch Jacob.
- 2:16No magic has any power against Israel.
- 2:20For now, it will be said of Jacob,
- 2:22what wonders God has done for Israel.
- 2:25These people rise up like a lioness,
- 2:28like a majestic lion rousing itself.
- 2:32They refuse to rest until they have feasted on prey,
- 2:35drinking the blood of the slaughtered.'
- 2:38Then Balak said to Balaam,
- 2:40"'Fine, but if you won't curse them,
- 2:41at least don't bless them.'
- 2:44But Balaam replied to Balak,
- 2:46"'Didn't I tell you that I can only do
- 2:48what the Lord tells me?'
- 2:50Then King Balak said to Balaam,
- 2:52"'Come, I will take you to one more place.
- 2:55Perhaps it will please God to let you curse them from there.'
- 2:59So Balak took Balaam to the top of Mount Peor,
- 3:03overlooking the wasteland.
- 3:05Balaam again told Balak,
- 3:07"'Build me seven altars and prepare seven young bulls
- 3:10and seven rams for me to sacrifice.'
- 3:13So Balak did as Balaam ordered
- 3:15and offered a young bull and a ram on each altar."
- 3:231 Chronicles 19, 1 to 21, 30.
- 3:28Sometime after this, King Nahash of the Ammonites died
- 3:31and his son, Hanun, became king.
- 3:34David said,
- 3:35"'I am going to show complete loyalty to Hanun
- 3:38because his father, Nahash,
- 3:40was always completely loyal to me.'
- 3:43So David sent ambassadors to express sympathy to Hanun
- 3:46about his father's death.
- 3:49But when David's ambassadors arrived in the land of Ammon,
- 3:52Hanun's advisor said to him,
- 3:54"'Do you really think these men are coming here
- 3:56to honor your father?'
- 3:58No, David has sent them to spy out the land
- 4:01so that they can come in and conquer it.'
- 4:04So Hanun seized David's ambassadors
- 4:07and shaved their beards,
- 4:09cut off their robes at the buttocks,
- 4:11and sent them back to David in shame.
- 4:14When David heard what had happened,
- 4:16he sent messengers to tell the men to stay at Jericho
- 4:20until their beards grew out.
- 4:21They were very embarrassed by their appearance.
- 4:25Now the people of Ammon realized
- 4:27how seriously they had angered David.
- 4:30So Hanun and the Ammonites sent 38 tons of silver
- 4:35to hire chariots and troops from Aram-Haram
- 4:38and Aram-Makkah and Zobah.
- 4:41They also hired 32,000 chariots
- 4:43and secured the support of the king of Makkah and his army.
- 4:47These forces camped at Medeba,
- 4:50where they were joined by the Ammonite troops
- 4:52that Hanun had recruited from his own towns.
- 4:55When David heard about all this,
- 4:57he sent Joab and all his warriors to fight them.
- 5:01The Ammonite troops drew up their battle lines
- 5:03at the gate of the city,
- 5:05while the other kings positioned themselves
- 5:07to fight in the open fields.
- 5:10When Joab saw that he would have to fight on two fronts,
- 5:14he chose the best troops in his army.
- 5:17He placed them under his personal command
- 5:20and led them out to fight the Arameans in the fields.
- 5:23He left the rest of the army
- 5:25under the command of his brother Abishai,
- 5:27who was to attack the Ammonites.
- 5:30If the Arameans are too strong for me,
- 5:32then come over and help me, Joab told his brother.
- 5:35And if the Ammonites are too strong for you,
- 5:38I will help you.
- 5:39Be courageous.
- 5:40Let us fight bravely to save our people
- 5:43and the cities of our God.
- 5:45May the Lord's will be done.
- 5:48When Joab and his troops attacked,
- 5:51the Arameans began to run away.
- 5:54And when the Ammonites saw the Arameans running,
- 5:57they ran from Abishai and retreated into the city.
- 6:01Then Joab returned to Jerusalem.
- 6:04The Arameans now realized
- 6:05that they were no match for Israel,
- 6:07so they summoned additional Aramean troops
- 6:10from the other side of the Euphrates River.
- 6:12These troops arrived under the command at Shobach,
- 6:16the commander of all Hadadezer's forces.
- 6:19When David heard what was happening,
- 6:21he mobilized all Israel, crossed the Jordan River
- 6:24and positioned his troops in battle formation.
- 6:27Then he engaged the enemy troops in battle
- 6:30and they fought against him.
- 6:33But again, the Arameans fled from the Israelites.
- 6:36This time David's forces killed 7,000 charioteers
- 6:40and 40,000 foot soldiers,
- 6:42including Shobach, the commander of their army.
- 6:45When the servants of Hadadezer realized
- 6:48they had been defeated by Israel,
- 6:50they surrounded, they surrendered to David
- 6:53and became his subjects.
- 6:55After that, the Arameans were no longer willing
- 6:58to help the Ammonites.
- 7:01The following spring, the time of the year
- 7:04when kings go to war, Joab led the Israelite army
- 7:07in successful attacks against the towns
- 7:10and villages of the Ammonites.
- 7:12In the process, they laid siege to the city of Rabah
- 7:15and destroyed it.
- 7:16But David had stayed behind in Jerusalem.
- 7:20When David arrived at Rabah,
- 7:22he removed the crown from the king's head
- 7:25and it was placed on David's own head.
- 7:27The crown was made of gold and set with gems
- 7:30and it weighed about 75 pounds.
- 7:33David took a vast amount of plunder from the city.
- 7:37He also made slaves of the people of Rabah
- 7:39and forced them to labor with saws, picks, and axes.
- 7:43That is how he dealt with the people
- 7:45of all the Ammonite cities.
- 7:47Then David and his army returned to Jerusalem.
- 7:51After this, war broke out with the Philistines at Gezer.
- 7:55As they fought, Sibachai from Husha killed Saph,
- 7:59a descendant of the giants,
- 8:01and so the Philistines were subdued.
- 8:03During another battle with the Philistines,
- 8:07Elhanan, the son of Jeor, killed Lami,
- 8:10the brother of Goliath of Gath.
- 8:14The handle of Lami's spear was as thick as a weaver's beam.
- 8:19In another battle with the Philistines at Gath,
- 8:21a huge man with six fingers on each hand
- 8:24and six toes on each foot,
- 8:26a descendant of the giants, defied and taunted Israel,
- 8:31but he was killed by Jonathan,
- 8:32the son of David's brother, Shimei.
- 8:36These Philistines were descendants of the giants of Gath,
- 8:39but they were killed by David and his warriors.
- 8:45Satan rose up against Israel and caused David
- 8:49to take a census of the Israelites.
- 8:52David gave these orders to Joab and his commanders,
- 8:55take a census of all the people in the land,
- 8:58from Beersheba in the south to Dan in the north,
- 9:01and bring me the total so I may know how many there are.
- 9:05But Joab replied,
- 9:06may the Lord increase the number of his people
- 9:09a hundred times over, but why, my Lord,
- 9:11do you want to do this?
- 9:13Are they not all your servants?
- 9:15Why must you cause Israel to sin?
- 9:18But the king insisted that Joab take the census,
- 9:21so Joab traveled throughout Israel to count the people.
- 9:25Then he returned to Jerusalem
- 9:27and reported the number of people to David.
- 9:30There were 1,100,000 men of military age in Israel
- 9:34and 470,000 in Judah.
- 9:37But Joab did not include the tribes of Levi and Benjamin
- 9:41in the census because he was so distressed
- 9:43at what the king had made him do.
- 9:46God was very displeased with the census
- 9:50and he punished Israel for it.
- 9:53Then David said to God,
- 9:54I have sinned greatly and shouldn't have taken the census.
- 9:58Please forgive me for doing this foolish thing.
- 10:03Then the Lord spoke to Gad, David's seer.
- 10:12This was the message.
- 10:13Go and say to David, this is what the Lord says.
- 10:16I will give you three choices.
- 10:18Choose one of these punishments and I will do it.
- 10:21So Gad came to David and said,
- 10:23these are the choices the Lord has given you.
- 10:26You may choose three years of famine,
- 10:28three months of destruction by your enemies
- 10:31or three days of severe plague
- 10:33as the angel of the Lord brings devastation
- 10:35throughout the land of Israel.
- 10:37Think this over and let me know
- 10:39what answer to give the Lord.
- 10:42This is a desperate situation, David replied to Gad,
- 10:45but let me fall into the hands of the Lord
- 10:48for his mercy is very great.
- 10:51Do not let me fall into human hands.
- 10:54So the Lord sent a plague upon Israel
- 10:56and 70,000 people died as a result.
- 11:01And God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem.
- 11:04But just as the angel was preparing to destroy it,
- 11:07the Lord relented and said to the death angel,
- 11:09stop, that is enough.
- 11:11At that moment, the angel of the Lord
- 11:13was standing by the threshing floor
- 11:16of Arunah, the Jebusite.
- 11:18David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord
- 11:21standing between heaven and earth
- 11:22with his sword drawn, stretched out over Jerusalem.
- 11:26So David and the leaders of Israel
- 11:28put on sackcloth to show their distress
- 11:31and fell down with their faces to the ground.
- 11:33And David said to God,
- 11:36I am the one who called for the census.
- 11:39I am the one who has sinned and done wrong,
- 11:41but these people are innocent.
- 11:43What have they done?
- 11:44Oh Lord, my God, let your angel fall
- 11:46against me and my family, but do not destroy your people.
- 11:51Then the angel of the Lord told Gad
- 11:56to instruct David to build an altar to the Lord
- 11:59at the threshing floor of Arunah, the Jebusite.
- 12:02So David obeyed the instructions
- 12:04the Lord had given him through Gad.
- 12:06Arunah, who was busy threshing wheat at the time,
- 12:09turned and saw the angel there.
- 12:11His four sons who were with him ran away and hid.
- 12:15When Arunah saw the king approaching,
- 12:17he left his threshing floor
- 12:18and bowed to the ground before David.
- 12:21David said to Arunah,
- 12:22let me buy this threshing floor from you at its full price.
- 12:26Then I will build an altar to the Lord there
- 12:29so he will stop the plague.
- 12:32Take it, my Lord, and use it as you wish,
- 12:34Arunah said to David.
- 12:36Here are oxen for the burned offerings
- 12:38and you can use the threshing tools
- 12:40for the wood to build a fire on the altar.
- 12:43And take the wheat for the grain offering.
- 12:45I will give it all to you.
- 12:47But the king replied to Arunah,
- 12:49no, I insist on paying what it is worth.
- 12:52I cannot take what is yours and give it to the Lord.
- 12:55I will not offer a burnt offering that has cost me nothing.
- 12:59So David gave Arunah 600 pieces of gold
- 13:02in payment for the threshing floor.
- 13:04David built an altar there to the Lord
- 13:06and sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings.
- 13:10And when David prayed,
- 13:11the Lord answered him by sending fire from heaven
- 13:14to burn up the offering on the altar.
- 13:17Then the Lord spoke to the angel
- 13:18who put the sword back into its sheath.
- 13:21When David saw that the Lord had answered his prayer,
- 13:25he offered sacrifices there at Arunah's threshing floor.
- 13:29At that time, the tabernacle of the Lord
- 13:31and the altar that Moses made in the wilderness
- 13:34were located at the hill of Gibeon.
- 13:37But David was not able to go there to inquire of God
- 13:40because he was terrified
- 13:42by the drawn sword of the angel of the Lord.
- 13:47Romans 2, 25 to 3, 8.
- 13:52The Jewish ceremony of circumcision is worth something
- 13:56only if you obey God's law.
- 13:59But if you don't obey God's law,
- 14:01you are no better off than an uncircumcised Gentile.
- 14:05And if the Gentiles obey God's law,
- 14:08won't God give them all the rights and honors
- 14:11of being his own people?
- 14:13In fact, uncircumcised Gentiles
- 14:16who keep God's law will be much better off
- 14:19than you Jews who are circumcised
- 14:22and know so much about God's law but don't obey it.
- 14:26For you are not a true Jew
- 14:28just because you were born of Jewish parents
- 14:31or because you have gone through
- 14:33Jewish ceremony of circumcision.
- 14:35No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God.
- 14:42And true circumcision is not a cutting of the body
- 14:46but a change of heart produced by God's Spirit.
- 14:50Whoever has that kind of change
- 14:52seeks praise from God, not from people.
- 14:56Then what's the advantage of being a Jew?
- 14:59Is there any value in the Jewish ceremony of circumcision?
- 15:02Yes, because a Jew has many advantages.
- 15:05First of all, the Jews were entrusted
- 15:07with the whole revelation of God.
- 15:10True, some of them were unfaithful.
- 15:13But just because they broke their promises
- 15:15does that mean God will break his promises?
- 15:18Of course not.
- 15:20Though everyone else in the world is a liar, God is true.
- 15:23As the Scriptures say,
- 15:25he will be proved right in what he says
- 15:27and he will win his case in court.
- 15:30But, some say, our sins serve a good purpose
- 15:33for people will see God's goodness
- 15:35when he declares us sinners to be innocent.
- 15:38Isn't it unfair then for God to punish us?
- 15:41That is actually the way some people talk.
- 15:44Of course not.
- 15:46If God is not just, how is he qualified to judge the world?
- 15:50But, some might argue,
- 15:52how can God judge and condemn me as a sinner
- 15:55if my dishonesty highlights his truthfulness
- 15:59and brings him more glory?
- 16:01If you follow that kind of thinking, however,
- 16:04you might as well say that the more we sin, the better it is.
- 16:07Those who say such things deserve to be condemned.
- 16:10Yet, some slander me by saying this is what I preach.
- 16:17Psalm 11, 1-7
- 16:20I trust in the Lord for protection.
- 16:23So why do you say to me,
- 16:25fly to the mountains for safety?
- 16:27The wicked are stringing their bows
- 16:31and setting their arrows into the bow strings.
- 16:34They shoot from the shadows at those who do right.
- 16:37The foundations of law and order have collapsed.
- 16:40What can the righteous do?
- 16:43But the Lord is in his holy temple.
- 16:47The Lord still rules from heaven.
- 16:51He watches everything closely,
- 16:54examining everyone on earth.
- 16:57The Lord examines both the righteous and the wicked.
- 17:01He hates everyone who loves violence.
- 17:04He rains down blazing coals on the wicked,
- 17:07punishing them with burning sulfur and scorching winds.
- 17:11For the Lord is righteous and he loves justice.
- 17:15Those who do what is right will see his face.
- 17:22Proverbs 19, 10-12
- 17:25It isn't right for a fool to live in luxury
- 17:28or for a slave to rule over princes.
- 17:31People with good sense restrain their anger.
- 17:34They earn esteem by overlooking wrongs.
- 17:37The king's anger is like a lion's roar,
- 17:40but his favor is like dew on the grass.
- 17:44I want to speak to you today from our reading from Romans 2.
- 17:49I want to zoom in on verse 29.
- 17:53In context, Paul is talking about circumcision,
- 17:58and he's having a discussion here in this chapter
- 18:01about the Jewish people who have their males circumcised
- 18:07and how they sometimes brag that they are so holy and righteous
- 18:11and set apart because they are circumcised.
- 18:14But Paul is saying this is a matter of the heart,
- 18:18that you can have Gentiles who are not circumcised
- 18:22but who are obeying God's law,
- 18:25and they are more righteous than a Jewish person
- 18:28who is circumcised but is not obeying God's law.
- 18:33So in verse 29, it says,
- 18:35No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God,
- 18:40and true circumcision is not a cutting of the body
- 18:44but a change of heart produced by God's Spirit.
- 18:48Whoever has that kind of change seeks praise from God,
- 18:53not from people.
- 18:56So I want to do a deep dive on this
- 18:58and look at a couple of other verses that we find in the Bible
- 19:01that talk about the circumcision of the heart.
- 19:05And we're going to begin in Deuteronomy 10,
- 19:10and we'll start in verse 15.
- 19:13The Lord delighted only in your fathers to love them,
- 19:17and he chose their descendants after them,
- 19:20you above all peoples, as it is this day.
- 19:24Therefore, circumcise the foreskin of your heart
- 19:28and be stiff-necked no longer.
- 19:33So here we're being exhorted in Deuteronomy
- 19:37to circumcise our heart,
- 19:40to cut the foreskin of our heart.
- 19:43Basically, it's the idea that you're cutting away the flesh,
- 19:48not literally, but spiritually,
- 19:51and that you're saying,
- 19:52Instead of following my own selfish desires and my own flesh,
- 19:56I'm going to follow hard after the Lord.
- 19:58I'm going to let his Holy Spirit be in charge,
- 20:01and I will follow his lead.
- 20:03Another verse that talks about this
- 20:05is found in Deuteronomy 30, verse 6.
- 20:11And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart
- 20:15and the heart of your descendants
- 20:18to love the Lord your God with all your heart
- 20:21and with all your soul that you may live.
- 20:25And so here's yet another verse from Deuteronomy
- 20:29that's talking about circumcision of the heart,
- 20:32that it's not just an outward circumcision in the body,
- 20:35but a circumcision of the heart.
- 20:38And finally, in Ezekiel chapter 36,
- 20:41we have a verse here that talks about a new heart.
- 20:45Ezekiel 36, starting in verse 25.
- 20:48Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you,
- 20:51and you shall be clean from all your filthiness
- 20:54and from all your idols will I cleanse you.
- 20:58A new heart also will I give you,
- 21:01and a new spirit will I put within you,
- 21:04and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh,
- 21:08and I will give you a heart of flesh.
- 21:12I will put my spirit within you
- 21:14and cause you to walk in my statutes,
- 21:17and you shall keep my judgments and do them.
- 21:21So when God gives us a new heart,
- 21:23he takes out the heart of stone,
- 21:25and he gives us a heart of flesh.
- 21:27Our heart, so to speak, is circumcised.
- 21:30Then when his spirit is dwelling within us,
- 21:33there's a desire put there inside of us
- 21:36to want to obey God, to walk in his ways,
- 21:40and to keep his statutes.
- 21:42And this is truly what God is after.
- 21:44So coming back into Romans chapter 2,
- 21:48one of the things that sets apart the Jewish people,
- 21:51a set-apart people, is they keep the Sabbath,
- 21:55they eat clean, biblically clean,
- 21:58they don't eat pork or shellfish,
- 22:01they don't eat pig,
- 22:02and also they circumcise their males.
- 22:05And so because of these practices,
- 22:09they've been a set-apart people.
- 22:11But God is not just after outward behavior,
- 22:15such as circumcision of the flesh,
- 22:17he's after our heart.
- 22:19And we've unpacked some verses about that.
- 22:22So, Father, today I pray
- 22:25that if there are any people listening today
- 22:28who've never had that heart change,
- 22:31that they would take a moment to pray
- 22:34and to ask you, Jesus,
- 22:36to take out our heart of stone,
- 22:41to remove it, to do heart surgery,
- 22:44and to put in a heart of flesh,
- 22:46that we would die to ourselves,
- 22:49repent of our sins,
- 22:52confess our sins,
