True Story of Japanese Holdouts
David records from Puerto Rico—jet-lagged and surrounded by palms—reflecting on a Gilligan's Island episode that led him to research Japanese holdouts from World War II: soldiers who hid on remote Pacific islands for years after the war ended.
The episode touches on survival in nature, stories of isolated people like the "man in the hole," and how history and propaganda shape our understanding of these forgotten figures.
