- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on the the podcast Millennials
- 1:01Speaker 4: who want Financial Freedom. Today, my friends, is Friday, which
- 1:05Speaker 4: means it is time to get our little team together
- 1:07Speaker 4: and celebrate you how incredible She's on the Money community
- 1:11Speaker 4: today is just greed. She is going to be sharing
- 1:13Speaker 4: her favorite money wins from the community. Beck Sayed is
- 1:16Speaker 4: going to be sharing her best broke tips which have
- 1:19Speaker 4: been going very well by my dad.
- 1:21Speaker 2: We get lots of good feedback. Beck.
- 1:23Speaker 4: We're going to be answering a juicy money dilemma which
- 1:25Speaker 4: this week is all about buying a house with your partner.
- 1:28Speaker 2: That clicking is just pulling out her invisil.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Line because she forgot to take it out for recording
- 1:34Speaker 4: and unpacking something that you slid into our DMS about
- 1:38Speaker 4: which this week we're talking about splitting the bill at dinner.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Let's ask Jessica, how are in visil line? Is it
- 1:45Speaker 2: this week?
- 1:45Speaker 5: Really good?
- 1:46Speaker 2: It's really good? Fuck great?
- 1:48Speaker 5: Oh, you know, I've had him for so long and
- 1:51Speaker 5: I'm on like, I've only got a couple of days
- 1:53Speaker 5: left on this trace. She didn't hurt too much at all.
- 1:58Speaker 2: The little click click click.
- 2:01Speaker 5: You're welcome everyone.
- 2:04Speaker 4: I have done in Fizzle Liner as well. And it's
- 2:06Speaker 4: funny because at the very beginning, if you're in Fizzlene Journey,
- 2:09Speaker 4: I feel like everybody just like walks out of the room,
- 2:11Speaker 4: goes to the bathroom, take rinses them, puts them back
- 2:15Speaker 4: in the case, pops them in their handbag. And then
- 2:18Speaker 4: obviously jess is a heap of mumps in because she's
- 2:20Speaker 4: just whipping them out of that they're sitting.
- 2:22Speaker 5: On the table.
- 2:26Speaker 2: She's not going to rinse them. I remember at the start, though,
- 2:32Speaker 2: you were like so particular about putting. Do you even
- 2:34Speaker 2: know where your case is?
- 2:35Speaker 1: No?
- 2:37Speaker 5: Actually it's it's in my car. I think, yeah, okay,
- 2:40Speaker 5: when I take.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Her in your car when you through the drive through, because.
- 2:45Speaker 5: When I eat my mac, I put my in throw
- 2:48Speaker 5: them out by accident.
- 2:49Speaker 2: That makes sense, very responsible. The rest of your week being.
- 2:53Speaker 5: Jess, I'm getting on a plane today. Oh my gosh,
- 2:59Speaker 5: but I like nothing this week really can trump the
- 3:02Speaker 5: exciting news, like forget my news. We have an emails count,
- 3:08Speaker 5: then you go first.
- 3:09Speaker 2: That's okay, Well you're elips I know, no, but okay, Well,
- 3:18Speaker 2: my week was actually really good. It was full of
- 3:21Speaker 2: just so many I have had so many plans like
- 3:23Speaker 2: it started from Friday last week literally up until today.
- 3:27Speaker 2: It was just full of people that friends that I've
- 3:30Speaker 2: known for a long time that I feel comfortable with
- 3:31Speaker 2: in myself with, and new friends that I felt connected to.
- 3:34Speaker 2: And it's been a really full week. All my buckets
- 3:38Speaker 2: are full. I feel great.
- 3:39Speaker 5: Oh my gosh.
- 3:40Speaker 2: But is it because you got English muffins?
- 3:43Speaker 5: Thank you so much.
- 3:44Speaker 2: That's so nice. It's very oily. That's probably why week
- 3:47Speaker 2: it's sleep I think this is the big news. Actually,
- 3:49Speaker 2: Victoria brought us some I'm really lovely English muffins.
- 3:51Speaker 5: I got the best English I always thought we have.
- 3:54Speaker 4: I always give the most rogue presence, Like if I'm
- 3:58Speaker 4: into something, I'm like, hey, Jess, I brought you this
- 4:01Speaker 4: jam and.
- 4:02Speaker 5: I love it.
- 4:03Speaker 4: You're never going to get like, oh, here's a really
- 4:05Speaker 4: thoughtful president that costs lots and lots of money. I
- 4:07Speaker 4: bought you English muffins, but that's they do cost. They
- 4:12Speaker 4: are very very good for those of you in Melbourne.
- 4:15Speaker 4: They are the Dreary Lane English muffins and I am
- 4:18Speaker 4: obsessed with them, like they are honestly the best English
- 4:21Speaker 4: muffins in the entire world. I also think it's a
- 4:23Speaker 4: really good name for an English muffin company.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Lane hard to say.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Where does he live?
- 4:30Speaker 2: Drewy Lane? Is that not the best English muffin company
- 4:33Speaker 2: name ever? Is it is? I really like it. I mean,
- 4:37Speaker 2: I'm just dying to get to the elephant in the room.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I don't know if it's not really an elephant's.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Trying to think of a funny segue. And I was
- 4:43Speaker 5: going to like make it a size related comment, but
- 4:45Speaker 5: I feel like I don't know, I know.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Well, this is maybe about news. Is the size of
- 4:53Speaker 2: the English Muffin.
- 4:54Speaker 4: This is so strange announcing it on the podcast, but
- 4:57Speaker 4: my husband Steve and I are having baby. Yeah, yeah,
- 5:02Speaker 4: it's really really fun. We're very obviously grateful for it.
- 5:06Speaker 4: It has been a journey getting here, but I feel
- 5:09Speaker 4: like it is, yeah, very exciting to announce. Also, I
- 5:12Speaker 4: guess in the same breath they want to say that
- 5:14Speaker 4: news could have hit you in the chest like a
- 5:16Speaker 4: ton of bricks if you're hearing it and going through
- 5:19Speaker 4: I guess fertility challenges.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I know that when I was in.
- 5:22Speaker 4: That position where I'd had a few losses and it
- 5:25Speaker 4: was really hard getting pregnant and life was just at
- 5:27Speaker 4: that point, it felt really dark, like I didn't like
- 5:30Speaker 4: hearing other people's pregnancy news.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And I get it if you're not excited. I totally
- 5:34Speaker 2: get at your feelings are so valid, and I think
- 5:36Speaker 2: that that is part of the journey. But I think
- 5:39Speaker 2: it's holy we're.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Going to add another Guiarlie to the squad.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Well we don't know, we don't know, but everybody's just
- 5:43Speaker 2: assuming it's a girl.
- 5:45Speaker 4: We're nearly halfway at this point, so I did leave
- 5:47Speaker 4: it a little bit late. I think it was like
- 5:49Speaker 4: the worst kept secret in the history of ever because
- 5:52Speaker 4: I have been so sick. So everybody in our office
- 5:55Speaker 4: absolutely well and truly knows. There were a few questions, Yeah,
- 6:00Speaker 4: mich whenever I did speaking events, like I do have
- 6:03Speaker 4: a bit of a bump, So there was a lot
- 6:04Speaker 4: of like bombastic side eye, she just.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Bloated or she pregnant. No, you can't ask that question.
- 6:13Speaker 2: That ring on a string. No, I haven't done any
- 6:15Speaker 2: of those things. Yeah, we do it off, we can
- 6:18Speaker 2: do it.
- 6:18Speaker 5: We can do it.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Absolutely. I'm all about it. Because we're not finding out
- 6:21Speaker 4: the gender. It's going to be a surprise.
- 6:23Speaker 2: But yeah, I'm all about those wives tales because I
- 6:25Speaker 2: feel like I just play into it so much. Does
- 6:28Speaker 2: it mean anything?
- 6:28Speaker 5: No?
- 6:29Speaker 4: My ov was like no, Victoria, like that means nothing.
- 6:32Speaker 4: I was like, yeah, but I'm carrying really high. It's
- 6:34Speaker 4: probably a girl.
- 6:35Speaker 2: And she's like that that is not actually accurate, and
- 6:38Speaker 2: I was like, cool, let me have it. So that's
- 6:42Speaker 2: that's the fun news of the week of the month.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I suppose the last four and a half months. I
- 6:48Speaker 2: suppose you could say it is that's very exciting. But yes,
- 6:51Speaker 2: I'm sure that broke.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Our video producer is probably going to put together a
- 6:55Speaker 4: really awful video of me and all of the cuts
- 6:58Speaker 4: in between episodes of me just gagging.
- 7:01Speaker 2: So can't wait for that content me sympathy gagging a
- 7:06Speaker 2: gag and then you'd be like ooh, and then I
- 7:08Speaker 2: producer gags and everyone being a very sexy trip.
- 7:11Speaker 4: But this episode is not about me, It is actually
- 7:13Speaker 4: about our community. So, miss Jessic GRICI, what are your
- 7:17Speaker 4: favorite money wins from our community this week?
- 7:20Speaker 5: My first money when this week comes from Hannah, who
- 7:22Speaker 5: said money win. I had an abundance of clothes. I've
- 7:24Speaker 5: tried selling a marketplace and everywhere else imaginable until I
- 7:28Speaker 5: came across a market in my state that specializes in
- 7:31Speaker 5: plus sized clothing, so I thought, why not give it
- 7:33Speaker 5: a go. My goal was not to bring one single
- 7:36Speaker 5: item of clothing home. My goal was almost achieved. I
- 7:38Speaker 5: came home with seven items when I left with about
- 7:41Speaker 5: two hundred. I'm very proud of myself, and I made
- 7:44Speaker 5: a huge profit going towards my house deposit, and we
- 7:47Speaker 5: got clean. Very fun and I know what we always
- 7:49Speaker 5: get a lot of people asking about reselling specifically for
- 7:52Speaker 5: the plus size market, is called double It's in Adelaide,
- 7:56Speaker 5: and I love the idea that that exists, and I'm
- 7:59Speaker 5: so cool. Anyone knows of one's in other states? Definitely
- 8:01Speaker 5: not a.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Snow Facebook group. Yeah, that's weird. I love it.
- 8:05Speaker 5: Next, I've got another shopping money in from Simone who
- 8:08Speaker 5: said I went to the opshop and I bought a
- 8:09Speaker 5: seven dollar biochemistry book, which was more than what I
- 8:12Speaker 5: wanted to pay, But then I saw it on Amazon
- 8:14Speaker 5: for five hundred bucks. Safe to say, happy with seven dollars.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Now, I've never been to an op shop in search
- 8:21Speaker 2: of a biochemistry book back, can you?
- 8:23Speaker 5: I cannot light reading.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Just don't like reading one five hundred dollars book all
- 8:28Speaker 2: for seven dollars. Repressive. I don't know. Universities maybe just
- 8:33Speaker 2: god I didn't go.
- 8:34Speaker 4: I wouldn't know, honestly, I swear my book list every
- 8:39Speaker 4: semester would cost about one thousand dollars.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Fine, one out of.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Ten, and then they make you buy the new volume
- 8:46Speaker 4: every year. Yeah, oh that one's outdated. My math's it's
- 8:50Speaker 4: not going to change.
- 8:51Speaker 5: No, No, I don't like it.
- 8:53Speaker 2: I don't like it.
- 8:53Speaker 4: I don't care if I have to flip a few
- 8:55Speaker 4: more pages. I'm using the old edition, so I've always
- 8:57Speaker 4: been like that. Yeah, absolutely good for money win like
- 9:01Speaker 4: that a lot. Next, I've got one from Lily who
- 9:04Speaker 4: said money win. I finally reviewed and updated my extras
- 9:06Speaker 4: only health insurance and I've saved myself forty a month.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, that's a big money love.
- 9:12Speaker 5: Next, I've got one from Stephanie who said she scored
- 9:15Speaker 5: free leggings at the lskd opening.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, yes, how excited.
- 9:20Speaker 5: Very fun. And then she got some thermals on super
- 9:22Speaker 5: clearance at Target for her Europe trip as well.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Money win.
- 9:26Speaker 5: Next, I've got a money in from Maren, who said
- 9:28Speaker 5: I've wanted Nike high Tops for work shoes for about
- 9:30Speaker 5: twelve months. I tried them on and loved them, thought
- 9:32Speaker 5: about it, and then remembered I had more than enough
- 9:34Speaker 5: in shopback.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Rewards or yes, how good is that really.
- 9:37Speaker 5: Purchasing the ones the money is transferred instead of buying
- 9:40Speaker 5: them tonight.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Oh that is so good.
- 9:42Speaker 5: What a genius, very clever.
- 9:44Speaker 2: That's literally a money win, Like that's money that you
- 9:46Speaker 2: wouldn't have had otherwise. It's free. It's really free money free, free,
- 9:52Speaker 2: free Nike high tops. So I was about to say airtops.
- 9:54Speaker 5: I don't know what I'm talking about. She gets it.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I'm a cool kid. She's so cool.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Lastly, I've got money one from Tara, who just said
- 10:02Speaker 5: a little fyi, if you order a water from maccas,
- 10:04Speaker 5: you still get the Monopoly ticket. Very clever mc donald's.
- 10:12Speaker 2: If you're listening, no you're not. But I have two
- 10:15Speaker 2: hundred free waters. I'm very thirsty. It's Monopoly back on macas.
- 10:21Speaker 5: It is.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Love is the clean of macas Monopoly so fine. I
- 10:27Speaker 2: tried to win the barbecue last year.
- 10:28Speaker 5: Didn't go well.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Oh I'm sorry.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Here, We're back on it. We're back on it. What
- 10:31Speaker 4: are we manifesting this year? Have you looked at the
- 10:33Speaker 4: prize list?
- 10:33Speaker 5: You know what I haveppened?
- 10:34Speaker 2: I've just collecting tickets.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Next next week on the show, we're going to be
- 10:39Speaker 4: updating you on something very exciting and it will be
- 10:41Speaker 4: Jess gives McDonald's monopoly, which list yes for everyone, Yeah, exactly.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Your win is everyone's wim. I think so too.
- 10:50Speaker 4: It was like the time she got the free kitchen
- 10:52Speaker 4: Aid mixer from all of her flybys points.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Everybody went nuts over that. So can you imagine if
- 10:57Speaker 2: she won stuff from Monopoly?
- 10:58Speaker 5: I know a right.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Speaking of being in it to win it, miss Beck,
- 11:05Speaker 4: what have you got when it comes to broke tips
- 11:07Speaker 4: this week?
- 11:07Speaker 2: Okay, So I've got a couple of good ones, very
- 11:10Speaker 2: Willwards related, I'm noticing, but just sponsored and like, have
- 11:14Speaker 2: they slid into your dms?
- 11:16Speaker 5: Not yet, Actually I don't know.
- 11:17Speaker 2: I find kind of weird. But let them know they can. Yeah,
- 11:20Speaker 2: they absolutely can. Free fruit for kids and for Beck Healy,
- 11:23Speaker 2: I'm still a kid at Okay. So the first one
- 11:26Speaker 2: is from Caitlin who said, I'm currently listening to an
- 11:29Speaker 2: episode of your podcast, and you guys had a lady
- 11:31Speaker 2: that had written in about Woolwards half price specials. But
- 11:34Speaker 2: let's go one better. I too work at Wooli's and
- 11:36Speaker 2: know that a lot of the wools brands are actually
- 11:38Speaker 2: still cheaper than the half priced specials. You have to
- 11:41Speaker 2: go by unit price to realize this, which is very clever.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Sninky sninky lady. Yes, I can't believe I forgot to
- 11:48Speaker 2: meet her name, so Woolies don't go for it, I know. Actually, yeah,
- 11:53Speaker 2: there's probably a lot of Caitlin's, so good luck. Yeah,
- 11:56Speaker 2: exactly what if we made up that is a fake name? Exactly?
- 12:01Speaker 2: You don't know if we're ahead of the game, which
- 12:03Speaker 2: we were not. No, But also you know, even when
- 12:05Speaker 2: you're going to like buy toilet paper or something like,
- 12:08Speaker 2: something looks cheaper or it's on special, it looks like fancy.
- 12:10Speaker 2: But if you go down and see how many cents
- 12:14Speaker 2: per role, yeah, you end up That's important. It's very important.
- 12:17Speaker 2: You don't realize it at the time because you're like, oh,
- 12:19Speaker 2: this one's on special, but it's still more expensive. So
- 12:21Speaker 2: always look at the unit price. You will get more
- 12:24Speaker 2: bang for your buck that way, and it's always on
- 12:26Speaker 2: the tag. You don't have to do the mass like
- 12:27Speaker 2: they have to show it on the little price tag
- 12:30Speaker 2: exactly exactly. So do that because sometimes it can be
- 12:34Speaker 2: very deceptive. Not gonna lie. When I'm looking at toilet paper,
- 12:38Speaker 2: I'm looking at how many ply it is, not how
- 12:41Speaker 2: much it is per role, because have you ever picked
- 12:43Speaker 2: up one ply toilet paper by accident?
- 12:45Speaker 5: Sandreat it's controversial.
- 12:48Speaker 2: I prefer one ply, but you would use more of it,
- 12:54Speaker 2: that's true. But something about three plat I feel like
- 12:57Speaker 2: like you can't justify it. I can't know, it's too soft.
- 13:00Speaker 2: It's just like, so, well, that's what we need. Too slippery.
- 13:04Speaker 5: You know you're broke. Tip from a couple of weeks
- 13:06Speaker 5: ago that someone sent in saying, squeeze the role. So
- 13:09Speaker 5: I don't squeeze the role because I don't like the
- 13:11Speaker 5: aesthetic of it. However looks, but it made me think
- 13:15Speaker 5: about the fact that I've never consciously considered how I
- 13:19Speaker 5: pull it. And it's true, like you just pull it
- 13:20Speaker 5: and when it stopped rolling, your stop and I've started
- 13:23Speaker 5: paying attention, and I could use like five percent of
- 13:27Speaker 5: what I normally use.
- 13:28Speaker 2: So like for you broke in, Jessica, and in the
- 13:33Speaker 2: long way, you do end up saving more money. Yeah,
- 13:35Speaker 2: so you don't let it go, like pay attention, pay attention,
- 13:39Speaker 2: be mindful, put down your phone. No, it's impossible. Are
- 13:43Speaker 2: you a scruncher or a folder?
- 13:44Speaker 5: Though?
- 13:44Speaker 2: Like what's the most economical use of paper?
- 13:47Speaker 1: Um?
- 13:48Speaker 5: I fold?
- 13:48Speaker 2: Yeah of course you.
- 13:49Speaker 5: But but it's like it's going to scrunch to it.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Yeah, you gotta scrunch to the fold. All right, let's
- 13:56Speaker 2: move on before this goes somewhere else have you got
- 14:00Speaker 2: for us?
- 14:00Speaker 5: Okay?
- 14:01Speaker 2: So the next broke tip is from Eleanor, who says
- 14:04Speaker 2: I have been using Willers rewards for a while now
- 14:07Speaker 2: and I have noticed they now do boosted points when
- 14:09Speaker 2: you purchase particular items. So if you go on their
- 14:13Speaker 2: website you can see that maybe for one week they're
- 14:15Speaker 2: doing like a thousand points per banana. But this is
- 14:19Speaker 2: relevant because either you'll get like that's definitely that's definitely
- 14:26Speaker 2: a bad example.
- 14:28Speaker 5: I love it, I wish, but also you know what.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Will sound like they're doing a good.
- 14:34Speaker 4: I was gonna be like, after we should reach out
- 14:36Speaker 4: to Elise because like I can see us working together.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Not now that you're like going, oh, they'll give you
- 14:41Speaker 2: a thousand points. BA, They're gonna go no, you guys, Yeah,
- 14:46Speaker 2: I'm so sorry to everyone listening. They're probably not going
- 14:48Speaker 2: to do that, but you never know. That was a
- 14:50Speaker 2: really bad example. So basically, the more points you get,
- 14:52Speaker 2: you eventually get ten dollars off per shop. And if
- 14:55Speaker 2: you just if you go to all Words and you
- 14:57Speaker 2: actually need these items, just check if the boosted that
- 15:00Speaker 2: week and fly By she did mention Flybys. Actually what
- 15:04Speaker 2: did she say here? Once you get two thousand points,
- 15:07Speaker 2: you can get ten dolls free off your next shop,
- 15:09Speaker 2: or you can transfer to quantous points. Sorry I thought
- 15:12Speaker 2: I said Flybys. I didn't quantaus points, so that's kind
- 15:16Speaker 2: of irrelevant for me. I'm not I'm not much of
- 15:17Speaker 2: a flyer, but if you are, that's.
- 15:20Speaker 5: Kind of cool. Save some cash on your holiday, exactly exactly.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I love that. Yeah, we're definitely a Flybys household in
- 15:26Speaker 2: this office. It's getting tense. It's not no, it's not
- 15:31Speaker 2: we fly Virgin, but we like Flybys. I feel like it.
- 15:36Speaker 5: All plugs in. You gotta have I feel like you
- 15:38Speaker 5: have to have an ecosystem.
- 15:39Speaker 2: But it's definitely a point in ecosystem.
- 15:41Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, aside stain Lane.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Speaking of Virgin, speaking a Virgin. Jess and I earlier
- 15:47Speaker 4: this week flew to Sydney for the Chaersa's second birthday party,
- 15:51Speaker 4: and oh we got upgraded to business.
- 15:56Speaker 2: That's a money win.
- 15:58Speaker 5: That is very cool, a huge money I'm an excited.
- 16:03Speaker 2: I want all the goths when we're I mean, we
- 16:05Speaker 2: can do it now if you want. So, we're going
- 16:06Speaker 2: to get lunch on the plane and everything. That is
- 16:08Speaker 2: so exciting.
- 16:09Speaker 3: I hadn't eat a lunch that day.
- 16:12Speaker 2: That is very very cool. Full transparency. This is a
- 16:15Speaker 2: pre recorded episode Jess is finding out right now, Jess
- 16:21Speaker 2: is flying business in approximately one point five hours and
- 16:25Speaker 2: she just found out is that. She was like, it
- 16:29Speaker 2: was so fancy. I was like, you don't you really?
- 16:34Speaker 4: You really got me a really busy week this week,
- 16:37Speaker 4: so we are recording Friday drinks on a Tuesday.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Sorry everyone, we've deceived you, but we are still drunk.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Jess wish not the rest of the table. Maybe you,
- 16:48Speaker 2: but thank you for coming prepared. But that's why Jess
- 16:51Speaker 2: was so excited. And to be honest, I'm really impressed
- 16:54Speaker 2: because usually she can't lie to save her life. To
- 16:58Speaker 2: bring it up, and I think that's why you scroll back.
- 17:01Speaker 5: If anyone saw that clip, I feel like my face
- 17:04Speaker 5: you can probably yeah, confused because.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Telling me something else.
- 17:10Speaker 4: The voice said, heck you, I'm so excited. And the
- 17:13Speaker 4: voice said.
- 17:14Speaker 2: I hadn't eaten that day.
- 17:18Speaker 5: Such a fast wire.
- 17:21Speaker 2: All right, all right, let's move on.
- 17:24Speaker 4: Jess is broke tip is fly with Victoria and she
- 17:27Speaker 4: will bid for an upgrade for you.
- 17:29Speaker 2: That is a good brow tip. Actually my personal break
- 17:33Speaker 2: tip for this week. Yeah, I want to know that
- 17:34Speaker 2: is relevant to this. It's not so much broke broke,
- 17:38Speaker 2: And I do apologize for those listening that might not
- 17:40Speaker 2: be able to relate to this. But let's say you
- 17:43Speaker 2: are traveling and you only have a set amount of budget.
- 17:46Speaker 2: My best friend's sister was telling about how she had
- 17:49Speaker 2: X amount to spend, but every resort or accommodation they
- 17:53Speaker 2: were a little bit more pricey. Yeah, she wanted to
- 17:55Speaker 2: say somewhere nice, so she called up a couple places
- 17:58Speaker 2: and emailed a couple of places and said, this is
- 18:00Speaker 2: my budget, what are you going to do for me?
- 18:02Speaker 2: And I think at least two places came back and
- 18:05Speaker 2: said we can, we can do that. Really, it's so
- 18:08Speaker 2: cool that I don't even thought no, I feel like
- 18:12Speaker 2: no worries. If not, i'd be too scared to like
- 18:15Speaker 2: what do you lose?
- 18:15Speaker 5: Like if you have a if you have a queen move.
- 18:18Speaker 2: I know, like, what are they going to do to
- 18:19Speaker 2: say no? What's who cares?
- 18:20Speaker 5: Exactly?
- 18:21Speaker 2: Who cares?
- 18:22Speaker 5: Yes, because they don't have many if they have heaps
- 18:24Speaker 5: of empty rooms, they probably some money.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Yeah, money, Yes, I think I think this was like
- 18:29Speaker 2: a little bit. It wasn't super last minute, but it
- 18:31Speaker 2: was a little bit more last minute. So that's okay,
- 18:33Speaker 2: best time to like reach out and be like quite cool,
- 18:35Speaker 2: may as well have someone in there for a little
- 18:37Speaker 2: bit of money.
- 18:37Speaker 5: Great tip.
- 18:38Speaker 2: I feel like that is a brilliant tip. It actually
- 18:40Speaker 2: leans into my favorite quote of the week, which has
- 18:42Speaker 2: been really helping me actually, and the quote is it's
- 18:45Speaker 2: not that deep. Oh yeah, I like email them. It's
- 18:49Speaker 2: not that deep deep.
- 18:51Speaker 5: I think such a big deal.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, that's not a big deal. Like email them,
- 18:55Speaker 2: go get it, queen.
- 18:56Speaker 5: I love that.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Here I am being like, oh, my money saving tip
- 18:59Speaker 4: is don't for buffet breakfast. Baoh breakfast, So poor Jessica.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Whenever we stay anywhere, I'm like, I'm not paying for that.
- 19:06Speaker 4: We are going to be buying cereals and fact, if
- 19:11Speaker 4: buffet breakfast is included, you best believe there's a TopWare
- 19:13Speaker 4: container in my bag so I can steal pastries for
- 19:16Speaker 4: morning tea and lunch.
- 19:18Speaker 2: It's just who I amas.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Follow us for more travel saving tips.
- 19:23Speaker 4: Let's go to a really quick break and on the
- 19:25Speaker 4: flip side, we're going to be talking about buying a
- 19:26Speaker 4: house with your partner and how to have a conversation
- 19:29Speaker 4: about splitting the bill at dinner.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Don't go anywhere, guys.
- 19:37Speaker 5: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to the money dilemma.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Hi, there.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Have you got a money dilemma you just can't solve.

- 19:57Speaker 4: us a short voice recording and you might just find
- 19:59Speaker 4: yourself on the show. Now, let's take a listen to
- 20:02Speaker 4: this week's money dilemma.
- 20:06Speaker 6: Hey, teams, So, my partner and I are looking to
- 20:08Speaker 6: buy our first home together. My partner's already on a
- 20:10Speaker 6: mortgage with his family and he doesn't make any of payments,
- 20:13Speaker 6: but it does mean the banks still see him as liable,
- 20:15Speaker 6: so it's impacted our borrowing power and first home buyer benefits.
- 20:18Speaker 6: His parents have generously offered us one hundred thousand dollars
- 20:20Speaker 6: to contribute towards our deposit, and at first I felt
- 20:23Speaker 6: guilty about taking money from them, but as their decisions
- 20:26Speaker 6: have impacted our borrowing power, I kind of feel like
- 20:28Speaker 6: a balance is out. But there's also been talk of
- 20:31Speaker 6: a financial agreement about who owns how much of our house,
- 20:34Speaker 6: and I feel quite uncomfortable about the whole thing because
- 20:37Speaker 6: it's very generous of them. But I also feel like
- 20:39Speaker 6: it's now my partner and his family buying a house,
- 20:41Speaker 6: and I'm just tacked onto the ride.
- 20:43Speaker 2: It's making me feel like I don't want to buy anymore.
- 20:45Speaker 6: I'll be talking about it with my partner, of course,
- 20:47Speaker 6: but I wondered if the community had any thoughts.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Thanks, this did not go the way I thought it would.
- 20:52Speaker 5: No kind of a couldurn to be in there, didn't I?
- 20:54Speaker 2: Yeah, but I can see where it's just coming from.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Of course, I totally understand that feeling. Let's start this
- 20:58Speaker 2: side of the table, good idea, better to start with
- 21:02Speaker 2: the expert. Actually, yeah, you just go hard to go home.
- 21:04Speaker 2: That's guys. So what when it comes to buying power?
- 21:09Speaker 2: This is what I suggest. Just take care of yourself
- 21:13Speaker 2: everyone around you, and that's it for me.
- 21:16Speaker 4: I think I think Bec's tip might be, if this
- 21:20Speaker 4: is not too rude, understand what buying power is.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Ah, that's a very very good piece. We can talk
- 21:26Speaker 2: about it after. Sure, we can talk about it after.
- 21:28Speaker 4: But I think it's interesting because that is a very
- 21:31Speaker 4: generous gift and it obviously gets you ahead. But at
- 21:35Speaker 4: the same time, I feel like I don't know if
- 21:40Speaker 4: saying this is mean, but I feel like you're taking
- 21:41Speaker 4: it the wrong way, like it totally gets you ahead.
- 21:44Speaker 4: I totally understand there being a financial agreement. In fact,
- 21:47Speaker 4: if you forget the fact that your partner already has
- 21:49Speaker 4: a mortgage with his family and the fact that it's
- 21:52Speaker 4: being gifted, Like, for a hot second, pretend that your
- 21:55Speaker 4: partner has one hundred thousand dollars deposit. If I was
- 21:57Speaker 4: going in and buying a house with Jess and she
- 21:59Speaker 4: had a hund and I didn't, I would actually expect
- 22:02Speaker 4: there to be a financial agreement that says, hey, if
- 22:05Speaker 4: we go and sell this house or Jess and I
- 22:07Speaker 4: break up for some reason, Jess gets her hundred grand
- 22:10Speaker 4: back because that doesn't instantly become my money. So maybe
- 22:13Speaker 4: a little bit of a mindset shift around that and going, well,
- 22:16Speaker 4: actually that makes sense because if Jess brings one hundred
- 22:19Speaker 4: grand to the table and I get to invest and
- 22:22Speaker 4: you know, acquire an asset that can appreciate in value,
- 22:25Speaker 4: I'm still in a good position here. You know, you're
- 22:28Speaker 4: not tacked along for the ride, Like Jess wouldn't be
- 22:31Speaker 4: giving me one hundred grand to you know, do that
- 22:34Speaker 4: if she didn't expect this relationship to last, so I
- 22:36Speaker 4: would assume that the same thing is happening with his family, Like,
- 22:39Speaker 4: there's no way, let's be honest, there's no way I
- 22:41Speaker 4: would give my kid one hundred grand by house with
- 22:44Speaker 4: a duofist that I don't like. Yeah, honestly, I wouldn't there,
- 22:48Speaker 4: Like I'd just be like absolutely not, like that's going nowhere,
- 22:51Speaker 4: Like they probably see a lot in the relationship.
- 22:53Speaker 2: What do you reckon, Jess? I mean if the shoe
- 22:54Speaker 2: was on the other foot, And I think I've spoken
- 22:56Speaker 2: about this before, like if I buy a house and
- 22:58Speaker 2: my partner lives with me, like I would be putting
- 23:01Speaker 2: in an agreement if I'm already sat just down back
- 23:04Speaker 2: and ben like, all right, what are we doing about
- 23:05Speaker 2: this binding financial agreement?
- 23:06Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 23:07Speaker 5: Like, I just think if if the roles were reversed
- 23:10Speaker 5: in the partner message and say, hey, my parents want
- 23:12Speaker 5: to give us this money, but I'm not sure, like
- 23:13Speaker 5: should I put an agreement in place? Like my advice
- 23:15Speaker 5: would be absolutely, Like I I completely understand why they
- 23:18Speaker 5: want to do that, and I can see how from
- 23:20Speaker 5: our listener's perspective, she goes, oh, well, I feel like
- 23:23Speaker 5: maybe I'm just you know, tacked on or I feel valid. Yeah,
- 23:27Speaker 5: I understand those feelings, but you have to think about
- 23:29Speaker 5: I guess from their end is that they're trying to
- 23:30Speaker 5: make sure that everyone's best interests are protected and that
- 23:33Speaker 5: everyone's contributions are recognized equitably. So I think that you
- 23:38Speaker 5: could like, you're absolutely still part of this journey. You're
- 23:40Speaker 5: going to be on the title, you're going to I assume,
- 23:42Speaker 5: be contributing to the mortgage or payments and creating the
- 23:45Speaker 5: home and doing all of those fun things. But from
- 23:48Speaker 5: my perspective, I guess that agreement is about making sure
- 23:51Speaker 5: that everyone is looked after should something go wrong touch
- 23:54Speaker 5: with that, of course it wouldn't, But should anything go wrong,
- 23:56Speaker 5: you've got a really clear delineation between what everybody's contribute
- 24:00Speaker 5: it and I guess if you are feeling like you're
- 24:02Speaker 5: not as involved, maybe talking to your partner about the
- 24:05Speaker 5: fact that you're feeling a little bit left out and
- 24:07Speaker 5: making sure that you're super involved in the process of
- 24:09Speaker 5: touring the houses, or you know, you and your partner
- 24:12Speaker 5: are sitting down and putting your wish list together and
- 24:14Speaker 5: that's something that's for you and your partner should do together.
- 24:17Speaker 5: The parents are really just trying to kind of help
- 24:19Speaker 5: you along the way. I don't think they're trying to
- 24:21Speaker 5: jump into bed between you, you know, but.
- 24:24Speaker 2: I mean it might be nice that's your.
- 24:26Speaker 4: First if that's what you're into, that's what you're into,
- 24:29Speaker 4: no judgment if there's consent. But I think the conversation
- 24:33Speaker 4: for me actually, like if she's not feeling a part
- 24:35Speaker 4: of it, I think it might be a bit of
- 24:36Speaker 4: a bigger problem.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Right, you said, are you touring the houses? Are his
- 24:40Speaker 2: parents now just getting involved and sending him the properties
- 24:43Speaker 2: and being like, we think you should buy this one,
- 24:45Speaker 2: And it's like not your narrative anymore, Like do you
- 24:47Speaker 2: feel cut out because of that? Like is it just
- 24:50Speaker 2: the financial side of things? Because if it is just
- 24:52Speaker 2: the financial side of things, and they've gone, hey, son,
- 24:55Speaker 2: here's one hundred grand, we want to do X, Y
- 24:57Speaker 2: and Z for you, and.
- 24:58Speaker 4: He goes, great, Jessic, let's buy our first home together. Like,
- 25:02Speaker 4: I think that needs some working through. And I do
- 25:04Speaker 4: think it's so valid regardless of where it's coming from.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Someone asking for a financial agreement when you know there's
- 25:09Speaker 4: big sums of money being thrown around like that is
- 25:12Speaker 4: very fair. But I can see if that on top
- 25:15Speaker 4: of already feeling out of the loop, on top of
- 25:17Speaker 4: you know, maybe not being in the family group chat
- 25:19Speaker 4: of the properties.
- 25:19Speaker 5: That are being sent back and forth.
- 25:21Speaker 2: You know, I can imagine that being quite hard.
- 25:23Speaker 5: You know.
- 25:23Speaker 2: You imagine if I was buying a house with Steve
- 25:25Speaker 2: and his parents were texting him links to go and
- 25:28Speaker 2: see on the weekend, and then he comes home and says, Oh,
- 25:30Speaker 2: I'm going to go to this inspection with my dad.
- 25:32Speaker 4: I'd be like, of what, Like, yeah, I don't feel
- 25:35Speaker 4: involved in this, and this is my purchase too, because
- 25:38Speaker 4: even though they're coughing up the cash, the responsibility is
- 25:41Speaker 4: sitting on your shoulders to pay that mortgage.
- 25:44Speaker 2: This is your acquisition, not just his.
- 25:47Speaker 4: So I would yeah, obviously you say'd have a chat
- 25:49Speaker 4: with your partner, but I think have her sit down
- 25:51Speaker 4: and think about where you're at first, and like, why
- 25:53Speaker 4: do you feel this way? What is triggering you to
- 25:56Speaker 4: feel like this, because importantly we need to work through
- 26:00Speaker 4: this before you actually get into bed, you could say,
- 26:03Speaker 4: in a financial way, because that could just harm the
- 26:06Speaker 4: relationship and we don't want that, especially if you're in
- 26:09Speaker 4: a happy place where you're talking about buying property together.
- 26:11Speaker 5: Decide fighting exactly. We're talking about couples this week, aren't we?
- 26:15Speaker 4: We are talking a lot about girls this week, Jess.
- 26:19Speaker 4: In fact, one of our dms this week that we
- 26:21Speaker 4: took to the community was about splitting the bill at dinner.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Do you want to hear what it had to say?
- 26:26Speaker 5: All right?
- 26:27Speaker 4: So this week the DM we received sounded a lot
- 26:29Speaker 4: like this because I'm reading it verbatim. Hey, she's on
- 26:33Speaker 4: the money squad. Would love some advice. Every time I
- 26:36Speaker 4: go out for dinner or drinks with my friends, the
- 26:38Speaker 4: group always tends to split the bill evenly at the
- 26:41Speaker 4: end of the night, which I am not a big
- 26:43Speaker 4: fan of. I'm trying super hard to save at the moment,
- 26:45Speaker 4: so I'll often order a cheaper.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Meal on the menu.
- 26:48Speaker 4: I'm also not a big drinker, so I always order
- 26:51Speaker 4: less drinks than my friends. I'm finding that I'm always
- 26:54Speaker 4: spending more when we split the bill evenly versus if
- 26:56Speaker 4: I just paid for what I had. I don't want
- 26:58Speaker 4: my friends to think that I'm being stingy, and I
- 27:01Speaker 4: am a super anti confrontational kind of person, so I
- 27:04Speaker 4: always just cut along with it. Do you have any
- 27:06Speaker 4: advice on how I could prevent this from happening again,
- 27:09Speaker 4: Thank you so much.
- 27:10Speaker 5: I feel like it's a super common problem.
- 27:12Speaker 4: I feel like we're having this conversation the other day.
- 27:14Speaker 4: When are we having this conversation? Wasn't Why does it
- 27:17Speaker 4: feel so familiar.
- 27:18Speaker 2: All the time, our producers all the time, when we
- 27:20Speaker 2: just talk about snacks and drinks and splitting bills all
- 27:22Speaker 2: the time?
- 27:23Speaker 5: Favorite us too.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Yeah, Beck, I know you're not a big drinker. How
- 27:27Speaker 4: do you approach this if you're going out for dinner
- 27:29Speaker 4: and drinks with friends and you're like, well, I don't
- 27:31Speaker 4: drink wine.
- 27:32Speaker 5: Cool.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Luckily, with my close friend group, it's always it's just
- 27:37Speaker 2: I don't have to even mention it, Like we all
- 27:38Speaker 2: know I don't drink, so I'm not going to be
- 27:40Speaker 2: We all just kind of like pay what we order.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Someone pays everything, they get the receipt, and we just
- 27:44Speaker 2: pay what we order. Blah blah blah. But people I'm
- 27:47Speaker 2: not super super comfortable with. I always try and make
- 27:49Speaker 2: it as like less conflict as possible. I don't, I don't.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I know that doesn't really make sense, but as least
- 27:57Speaker 2: just no, no, no, that's what we want to hear.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Like she just said she's an oncommon friend exactly, the
- 28:01Speaker 2: advice exactly. So what I do is I try and
- 28:03Speaker 2: make it as joky as possible. So as soon as
- 28:05Speaker 2: we sit down and be like, I don't want to
- 28:07Speaker 2: be that guy. Yes, I'll always like self deprecation goes
- 28:13Speaker 2: a long way when you're trying to be joking. So
- 28:15Speaker 2: I'll be like, I don't want to be that guy,
- 28:16Speaker 2: but I'm really broke. So what I'm going to do
- 28:18Speaker 2: is not order that much and then I'll just pay whatever.
- 28:21Speaker 2: If that's okay with everyone, And literally all the time people.
- 28:24Speaker 4: Like, yeah, if you imagine exactly, it's way more possible outcome.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, beck, are you okay? That's what we
- 28:33Speaker 2: want to hear.
- 28:35Speaker 5: Would be nice.
- 28:37Speaker 2: It wouldn't turn that down, no, but it's always way
- 28:39Speaker 2: more awkward at the end of your meal or your
- 28:42Speaker 2: whatever you're having cocktails or whatever you're doing, if they've
- 28:46Speaker 2: expected that it will be seat and they've gone ordered
- 28:50Speaker 2: another thing. Because I think people do that, I feel
- 28:52Speaker 2: like they're like, oh, it's finally splitting it. I will
- 28:53Speaker 2: have another cocktail. Rude exactly. Not, So I would say
- 29:01Speaker 2: get that conversation out of the way. As early as possible,
- 29:03Speaker 2: even while you're making plans, if you want to be like, hey, yeah,
- 29:06Speaker 2: let's go here, just so you guys know, I'm kind
- 29:07Speaker 2: of broke, so I'm not gonna order that much. Let's
- 29:09Speaker 2: just sort out the bill layer blah blah blah. Yeah,
- 29:11Speaker 2: but get get that conversation out of the way as
- 29:13Speaker 2: early as possible. You feel like you're good at having
- 29:15Speaker 2: those conversations though, thank you, thank you so much, as jokey,
- 29:18Speaker 2: as self deprecating as possible, so that it's not like,
- 29:22Speaker 2: you know, conflicting or all the world.
- 29:24Speaker 5: You know, not that you should have to do that.
- 29:26Speaker 5: You have to have to minimize yourself.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Absolutely not, but just if you're feeling it doesn't work
- 29:31Speaker 2: in our social circle. Whenever there self deprecates, I'm like,
- 29:34Speaker 2: can you not that's true? You guys, I'm always like,
- 29:36Speaker 2: are you done? Because that's not okay? And then you go,
- 29:39Speaker 2: oh damn. I think and I've said this before on
- 29:46Speaker 2: the podcast, like we could be really clear and go yeah, cool, Well, Jessica,
- 29:50Speaker 2: you should walk in and just tell your friends that
- 29:52Speaker 2: they need to respect you.
- 29:53Speaker 4: No one's gonna do that, Like I want a non
- 29:55Speaker 4: I'm not a confrontational person, like I don't want to
- 29:59Speaker 4: walk in and be a agressive about something, even though
- 30:01Speaker 4: you're right, like I do deserve that, and there are
- 30:03Speaker 4: some people that that works really well for. But I
- 30:05Speaker 4: think it's these softer ways of approaching things, even if
- 30:08Speaker 4: it means, you know, being a little bit self deprecating,
- 30:10Speaker 4: if you're like, that's the thing that makes me feel
- 30:13Speaker 4: confident enough to ask for what I need. Like, I
- 30:15Speaker 4: think that we should give that a little bit of
- 30:17Speaker 4: credit to sometimes even though I'm like, you shouldn't do
- 30:19Speaker 4: that totally if it makes like if it makes you comfy,
- 30:22Speaker 4: like sometimes we just do things that make ourselves a
- 30:24Speaker 4: little bit more comfy totally.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Jess, what would you do? How do you do it
- 30:28Speaker 2: at dinner?
- 30:28Speaker 5: I mean, I think we don't even have to do
- 30:32Speaker 5: it because I hang out with effectively two groups of friends.
- 30:35Speaker 5: You guys are my other grad friends.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Like we've just kind of like got our team and
- 30:39Speaker 2: mean like we're our friends now yeah, now kiss one.
- 30:42Speaker 5: But I think the interesting thing is is once you
- 30:45Speaker 5: establish a precedent, once you have that conversation once, I
- 30:49Speaker 5: don't think you ever have to have it in because
- 30:50Speaker 5: when I reflect on how we do it in our
- 30:52Speaker 5: friend group. If we go out to dinner a lot
- 30:54Speaker 5: of the time we will kind of split it evenly
- 30:56Speaker 5: unless there is someone like we have one friend who's
- 30:59Speaker 5: currently doing the fodmap thing and so he's having real
- 31:03Speaker 5: specific food, he's not drinking alcohol, Like it's very, very particular.
- 31:06Speaker 5: And so when we all went out to dinner that
- 31:08Speaker 5: like that long ago, we said, okay, cool, so like
- 31:10Speaker 5: the six of us, we're all going to share plates.
- 31:12Speaker 5: Everyone's gonna you know, bit CPC. We all good to
- 31:15Speaker 5: split it. Yeah cool, you sean you to your own
- 31:18Speaker 5: and we just took it off the top. And once
- 31:20Speaker 5: we've done that once, that's just how it always is. Yea,
- 31:23Speaker 5: And you can set the precedent. Yeah, Or if someone's
- 31:24Speaker 5: pregnant and they're not drinking, because that exactly right, then
- 31:28Speaker 5: you kind of I think you just automatically consider that
- 31:32Speaker 5: because you've done it before. So I think once you've
- 31:34Speaker 5: had that conversation that Beck was saying once or twice
- 31:37Speaker 5: and you've made that point, it kind of theoretically just
- 31:40Speaker 5: becomes a second nature. Like you just have to establish
- 31:43Speaker 5: the parameters, like hey, do we all pay for ourselves always?
- 31:46Speaker 5: Or hey do one or two people consume less, and
- 31:49Speaker 5: therefore should we just make sure that we're always knocking
- 31:51Speaker 5: theirs off the top first and then splitting. So it's
- 31:53Speaker 5: I think once you get over that hump, it probably
- 31:55Speaker 5: also gets a lot easier.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Yeah. I think for this particular question, they say, every
- 32:00Speaker 2: time I go out, we just split it evenly, Like,
- 32:02Speaker 2: how do we change that?
- 32:04Speaker 5: You got togae something to change something?
- 32:05Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly, you've just got to put your head out,
- 32:07Speaker 4: and you know what, I reckon that you're not the
- 32:09Speaker 4: only person thinking that I was gonna see you can't
- 32:11Speaker 4: be the only one at the table if that's the case,
- 32:14Speaker 4: in which case I'd just get on the front foot,
- 32:16Speaker 4: not like front foot like you beck where you're saying
- 32:18Speaker 4: it upfront. I would be like, oh, let's get the
- 32:21Speaker 4: bill and I can work out what everybody owes and
- 32:23Speaker 4: like kind of take control of the conversation and be like,
- 32:26Speaker 4: oh my gosh, it would be so unfair because Jess
- 32:28Speaker 4: only had one cocktail and kind of just try and
- 32:31Speaker 4: put it in a position where you're the one asking
- 32:33Speaker 4: for the bill, like, oh, hey, let's grab the bill
- 32:36Speaker 4: so we can all work out what we owe And
- 32:38Speaker 4: then if somebody says, oh, we'll just split it evenly. Go, oh,
- 32:41Speaker 4: that's not the fairest way, though, because like, what are
- 32:43Speaker 4: they going to do argue with you when you say
- 32:45Speaker 4: that's not the fairest way, Whereas it's from my perspective
- 32:48Speaker 4: a lot harder. Once they're like, oh, we'll just split
- 32:50Speaker 4: it evenly, and everyone's like nodding, and you're like, I
- 32:52Speaker 4: don't want to.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Be like, don't want to be that guy. I don't
- 32:55Speaker 2: want to be that guy. Don't want to be that guy.
- 32:57Speaker 4: But I think if you put yourself in they're like
- 33:00Speaker 4: control seat of like, oh, let's work out what we
- 33:01Speaker 4: all are. I'll get my calculator up out, like you
- 33:04Speaker 4: can be the instigator in a way, sure of that,
- 33:07Speaker 4: And then you know what, other people are going to go,
- 33:09Speaker 4: oh great, I don't have to do the maths of it,
- 33:10Speaker 4: because there are going to be people sitting at that
- 33:12Speaker 4: table who are in the financially comfortable position where they're like,
- 33:16Speaker 4: doesn't worry me if we split it evenly, doesn't worry
- 33:19Speaker 4: me if we do it you know individually, I can't
- 33:22Speaker 4: be bothered working it out.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Someone just tell me what I owe?
- 33:25Speaker 4: Yeah, And like I have been guilty of that, like
- 33:28Speaker 4: I have definitely been guilty where you know, I'll be like,
- 33:31Speaker 4: that's fine, Like I'll pay whatever you want, like after
- 33:33Speaker 4: two wines, Like I'm not that interested in whipping out
- 33:36Speaker 4: my calculator up and working it out, so I'll just
- 33:39Speaker 4: be like, Yep, you guys.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Tell me what we're doing, and that's fine, and that's
- 33:41Speaker 2: not the best way to be, but you know, it's
- 33:44Speaker 2: all own up to our our failures, but that's okay.
- 33:47Speaker 5: Did anyone else have suggestions on how you can handle us?
- 33:49Speaker 2: So many suggestions.
- 33:50Speaker 4: Before we get to suggestions, though, we did ask a
- 33:52Speaker 4: few questions. We said, how does your friend group split
- 33:55Speaker 4: the bill on a night out? Twenty nine percent of
- 33:58Speaker 4: you said you split evenly, and eventy one percent of
- 34:01Speaker 4: you said you just pay for what you ordered individually.
- 34:03Speaker 2: So that's good. Yeah, but we're all savvy finance queens,
- 34:06Speaker 2: so I don't reckon that's the norm. I reckon that's
- 34:08Speaker 2: just the shees on the money community, because I've got
- 34:10Speaker 2: tickets on them being good.
- 34:12Speaker 3: Agreed.
- 34:12Speaker 2: We said, if you split it evenly, are you happy
- 34:15Speaker 2: to do this? Thirty nine percent of you said, yep,
- 34:18Speaker 2: it's actually just the easiest way sixty one percent of
- 34:20Speaker 2: you said not not really, but I just go along
- 34:22Speaker 2: with it.
- 34:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Relatable.
- 34:26Speaker 4: We said, do you think you would spend less money
- 34:28Speaker 4: if you paid for only what you ordered?
- 34:31Speaker 2: Sixty seven percent of you said, yeah, oh is that bad?
- 34:36Speaker 2: That is bad. So there's always someone just going a
- 34:40Speaker 2: dragon drinks. There's always one. I'm thinking, there's always one.
- 34:44Speaker 5: There's always one.
- 34:45Speaker 2: It'd be so boring going out for dinner nowadays with us.
- 34:47Speaker 4: You don't drink. I can't drink. Jess is a one
- 34:50Speaker 4: and done kind of girly. Oh yeh, would'd be fine?
- 34:53Speaker 2: Cheat you get silly, Yeah, like we get. You've heard
- 34:56Speaker 2: us on the podcast. None of us really drink, and
- 34:58Speaker 2: that's how silly we are, exactly, like, that's how do
- 35:02Speaker 2: you know what actually? Complete side notes. I was pregnant
- 35:05Speaker 2: at my my Barbie Themes birthday and the amount of
- 35:09Speaker 2: people that you know, after my birthday, I was announcing
- 35:12Speaker 2: that I was pregnant, you know, told my friends They're like,
- 35:14Speaker 2: you were drinking at your birthday. I was like, no,
- 35:16Speaker 2: Badbell was high on life, like I did not have
- 35:18Speaker 2: one drink. I in fact, had mocktails all night. I
- 35:22Speaker 2: was just vibing and they're like, oh, okay, I'm like
- 35:27Speaker 2: the bar stuff worrying on it.
- 35:28Speaker 5: It was pocastery.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Wow, I was had some fake champagne going so I
- 35:32Speaker 2: could hold it in photos and everybody knew true. I
- 35:34Speaker 2: just wasn't ready to share it. Okay, Yeah, that's okay,
- 35:37Speaker 2: all right. So back to the question. This is what
- 35:40Speaker 2: the community had to say. Lots of responses on this one.
- 35:43Speaker 4: So someone said, try and choose places where you pay
- 35:46Speaker 4: when you order or are still using a QR code system.
- 35:50Speaker 5: You are coded savior. It gets rid of the awkward
- 35:54Speaker 5: thing like everyone just whip out your phone. Right, we
- 35:56Speaker 5: were going to fonder literally done.
- 35:58Speaker 4: I reckon I could how to deal with Jess where
- 36:01Speaker 4: if I said, every time we go out for dinner
- 36:02Speaker 4: or lunch in the future, it'll always be it fun,
- 36:04Speaker 4: she'd agree to it. Yeah, not because of QR code.
- 36:07Speaker 4: She just really likes that she can read over. Someone
- 36:12Speaker 4: else said, it's really related to age and live stage.
- 36:14Speaker 4: As we've gotten older and have higher disposable income, the
- 36:18Speaker 4: less issue we have with splitting. Yeah, like you said,
- 36:21Speaker 4: I'm actually finding that to be very true.
- 36:24Speaker 2: It's interesting now that I'm in my thirties.
- 36:25Speaker 4: Guys, and you know, it's no longer us just going
- 36:28Speaker 4: out for like UNI lunches or you know, dinner with
- 36:31Speaker 4: friends at reasonable places. Like I have expensive taste, and
- 36:35Speaker 4: sometimes I really want to go out for like, you know,
- 36:37Speaker 4: my husband's birthday and to spend a really nice amount
- 36:40Speaker 4: on dinner. We do definitely budget in in like he
- 36:43Speaker 4: does not get any uber eats that week. But I
- 36:46Speaker 4: find the more expensive the restaurant, the more likely I
- 36:50Speaker 4: am to with another couple just split it met because
- 36:53Speaker 4: you end up like ordering a bottle of wine together
- 36:56Speaker 4: and the meals are all kind of comparable, and it
- 36:59Speaker 4: just becomes a bit of an issue.
- 37:01Speaker 2: I would say to kind of go, all right, well
- 37:03Speaker 2: did you have this? And I had that? And like,
- 37:06Speaker 2: I think, the more expensive the restaurant, the less likely
- 37:08Speaker 2: you are to split it item by item. Sure, because
- 37:11Speaker 2: if you're concerned about saving you're probably not not going
- 37:13Speaker 2: to Mathilda onto Main Road. Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, it's true.
- 37:17Speaker 4: But it's interesting because that's when you probably should be
- 37:20Speaker 4: a little bit more cautious because of lifestyle creep and
- 37:22Speaker 4: things getting away from you. And yeah, I just totally reflecting.
- 37:26Speaker 4: That's interesting. Someone said I have in the past just
- 37:29Speaker 4: handed over cash towards the bill and said, hey, this
- 37:31Speaker 4: amount covers my meal.
- 37:34Speaker 5: I feel like that's a smart way to do it.
- 37:35Speaker 5: Pretty good.
- 37:36Speaker 4: I feel like it's a good way, but it might
- 37:38Speaker 4: make you a bit like, I don't know, well, what
- 37:43Speaker 4: if you have the right cash, you might have to
- 37:46Speaker 4: like go and research the meals beforehand, like if everybody
- 37:51Speaker 4: else was expecting to split it and then it does it.
- 37:53Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 37:53Speaker 4: I feel like that's a good one because it's definitely
- 37:56Speaker 4: putting it in control. But I think, yeah, that might
- 37:59Speaker 4: be a little bit harder because I'd hate for them
- 38:01Speaker 4: to turn around and be like, oh, Beck, like we're
- 38:03Speaker 4: splitting it evenly, it's an extra ten bucks, and you go, well,
- 38:05Speaker 4: I don't have it.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, true.
- 38:08Speaker 4: I just don't want an awkward situation to arise next.
- 38:11Speaker 4: Someone said, just check with the waiter if you can
- 38:13Speaker 4: pay separately before they order. It often helps to manage expectations.
- 38:17Speaker 4: That's a good idea.
- 38:19Speaker 2: It's very good. That's very good. Someone else said.
- 38:22Speaker 4: Sometimes I say, at the start of the meal, I'm
- 38:23Speaker 4: going to splurge and order X y Z tonight, So
- 38:27Speaker 4: let's check with the waiter and see if they can
- 38:29Speaker 4: split the bill.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good idea.
- 38:33Speaker 5: I like that.
- 38:33Speaker 2: It's like yours. Yeah, okay, Beck is going to be
- 38:38Speaker 2: more positive this year. I can feel it in my bones. Yeah,
- 38:41Speaker 2: I can feel it too, right. Someone said it's especially
- 38:45Speaker 2: unfair for those who don't drink. It reminds me of
- 38:48Speaker 2: that Friends episode if you know, you know, never watched.
- 38:51Speaker 2: I definitely know what she's talking about. It's a Seinfeld
- 38:55Speaker 2: girly I oh, no, one said that. Someone said, you
- 39:02Speaker 2: know what, you should be able to talk to your
- 39:04Speaker 2: friends in an open conversation about money. True. Ideally friends
- 39:10Speaker 2: be friends. That's true exactly. Someone said it really depends
- 39:14Speaker 2: if you shared meals or not.
- 39:15Speaker 5: Ah.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Yes, if you're at one of those tapasy kind of restaurants,
- 39:18Speaker 2: we like, do what Jess was saying before, We have
- 39:21Speaker 2: little bits of everything, do you Yeah, my favorite way.
- 39:25Speaker 2: I know everyone loves them, but I just like, if
- 39:28Speaker 2: I'd like the taste of something, I want a whole
- 39:30Speaker 2: plate of it.
- 39:30Speaker 5: Be fussy, fussy, you do not really, I don't think.
- 39:35Speaker 2: I also, I just don't like the idea that like,
- 39:38Speaker 2: if there's a shrimp or I don't I call it
- 39:40Speaker 2: a shrimp a prawn, that I like in like a
- 39:42Speaker 2: plate of maybe you get five prawns, for example, you're
- 39:44Speaker 2: eating with five people. If you like the taste of
- 39:46Speaker 2: it so much, that's it.
- 39:48Speaker 5: You're done after the one.
- 39:50Speaker 2: I don't like it. I don't like it.
- 39:52Speaker 4: Okay, So this is where jess and I really like
- 39:55Speaker 4: duning it Chinchin. What do we do with the entrees
- 39:58Speaker 4: that we like the most? Yess we just order like
- 40:01Speaker 4: double of them.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Okay, that's not a bad idea. Actually it was so
- 40:06Speaker 2: nice we bought it twice.
- 40:08Speaker 4: But there's yeah, there's one no tree at Chincin where
- 40:10Speaker 4: I'm not like we can share everything, Jessica, but you
- 40:14Speaker 4: will be getting your own one if these do not
- 40:16Speaker 4: touch mine.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes, yes, that's exactly right.
- 40:19Speaker 5: Don't touch it.
- 40:20Speaker 2: It's not happening.
- 40:20Speaker 5: No.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Not good at sharing though.
- 40:23Speaker 5: So yes, exactly.
- 40:27Speaker 4: A lot of the other I won't go too far
- 40:29Speaker 4: into them, because honestly, there were hundreds of responses, but
- 40:32Speaker 4: lots of the conversation was really about please communicate with
- 40:35Speaker 4: your friends about setting expectations. In fact, something might come
- 40:39Speaker 4: up where they suggest you don't even go out at
- 40:41Speaker 4: all and you all save money by having a few
- 40:44Speaker 4: more dinner parties at home, which I think is brilliant
- 40:47Speaker 4: and quite smart, and to be honest, very she's on
- 40:49Speaker 4: the money. I feel like at this point in this economy,
- 40:52Speaker 4: Jessica Rici, Yeah, in this economy, we can't actually afford
- 40:57Speaker 4: to be always dining out and just having open on conversations.
- 41:01Speaker 4: They're going to make everybody at the table feel so
- 41:03Speaker 4: much more confident, so much more comfortable.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Like, oh, I went to one of make girlfriends the
- 41:07Speaker 2: other day.
- 41:07Speaker 4: She's recently had a baby, and I made sandwiches before
- 41:10Speaker 4: I went like, sandwiches yep.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Love that had some lemonade on her balcony.
- 41:18Speaker 5: Yeah, so fun.
- 41:20Speaker 4: But like, I think we need to remember why you're
- 41:22Speaker 4: catching up with these people in the first place. I
- 41:23Speaker 4: promise it's not because you are worried about splitting a prawn.
- 41:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm worried. Next time we're out for dinner, let
- 41:31Speaker 2: Beck have the X, you can have all the prime.
- 41:33Speaker 5: Thank you so much, Thank you.
- 41:36Speaker 4: All right, well, I think that is unfortunately all we
- 41:38Speaker 4: have time for this week. As always, we wish you
- 41:41Speaker 4: the best weekend and we cannot wait to.
- 41:43Speaker 2: See you on Monday for our money diary. Bright and
- 41:45Speaker 2: early bye guys.
