- 0:00Hey, you guys, welcome to episode 145 of Frontline Static,
- 0:05The power of having a coach. Today I'm going to get real
- 0:08vulnerable with you guys. I'm going to talk to you about
- 0:11my journey of what it's been like since I found life coaching
- 0:15and what each coach has kind of helped me with.
- 0:19And I'm going to tell you like I've had a few different ones
- 0:24over the last five years now since I found life coaching.
- 0:29And I'm going to talk about what I learned from each of those and
- 0:34just the power of having a coach and a life coach in your corner.
- 0:39So if those of you guys who have just started following me, you
- 0:45may have not heard this before, but I found life coaching tools
- 0:49about five years ago. I was faced with having my three
- 0:54older kids were all teenagers at the time.
- 0:57So if you don't know this about me, I have a 2020 year old and
- 1:01then I have twins that are 18 and then I also have a 12 year
- 1:04old. But my twins were actually born
- 1:07on my 20 year old's birthday. And so having them all two years
- 1:12apart, 3 under the age of 2 when I had originally started nursing
- 1:18school was a challenge. And when they all turned to
- 1:22teenagers when they were 13 and then my oldest was 15, it became
- 1:28even more of a challenge. And I've always been the mom who
- 1:32really, really loved working, like I told my husband before we
- 1:36got married, like having a profession and having a job is
- 1:40something that I'm always going to want to do.
- 1:43And I do want to have kids, but I want to be able to have both.
- 1:46And I want to be able to be a mother and really love the work
- 1:52that I'm doing. And so naturally, when I became
- 1:55a nurse, an unexpected thing happened and I was pregnant with
- 2:00my 4th. And I remember it was the first
- 2:03day that I started my very first job as a nurse in the ICUI,
- 2:09found out I was pregnant with my 4th unexpectedly.
- 2:13And you know, there's challenges with having teenagers, but I was
- 2:20finding it really hard as as they were getting more involved
- 2:26with things, as they were finding out and figuring out who
- 2:29they were as not everything was easy in parenting as when they
- 2:38were little, where I felt like there was pushback against what
- 2:42I was wanting them to do, what I was not wanting them to do.
- 2:45They were trying to find their identity.
- 2:46And so Long story short, it was becoming hard for me to have a
- 2:51career that I loved and then also learn how to parent
- 2:54teenagers at the same time who were trying to create a little
- 2:57bit of independence. And for those of you guys who
- 2:59have teenagers, I know that you can relate.
- 3:02And it was also during this time, I think I had been in
- 3:05flight for maybe about two or three years.
- 3:10I had a really challenging moment where I had experienced
- 3:14four or five deaths, I can't remember exactly.
- 3:16I know that they were stacking on top of each other over the
- 3:19course of like four or five weeks in my job.
- 3:21And I was remembering that I was having such a hard time with it.
- 3:25I felt really isolated. I was dealing with a little bit
- 3:28of mom guilt too, not being able to be at all the kids
- 3:30activities. And I was identity shift that I
- 3:36was having in my life was that I had always, I, I had always felt
- 3:40like what I was doing was what I was meant to be doing as a
- 3:43flight nurse. But then I was feeling also like
- 3:46this kind of pole to be at home more too and to be with my kids
- 3:51and to help them through what the challenges that they were
- 3:54going through. And I remember thinking maybe
- 3:57I'm doing it wrong. Maybe I need to be at home with
- 4:02them more. Maybe I should want this more.
- 4:07I want to be a stay at home mom. And I remember finding myself in
- 4:10a ton of comparison and so much like I just had so much
- 4:15judgement on myself. And this is where I found the
- 4:21Life Coach School podcast. And I started to listen to it
- 4:24and I started to realize I was kind of stuck in this mismanaged
- 4:29mind of compare and despair. And I went to the website, the
- 4:34Life Coach School website. I looked up a coach and I found
- 4:38a coach that would help me specifically with having
- 4:40teenagers. And I started to get coaching
- 4:42with him every week. And what this particular coach
- 4:47really taught me was that I have control over how I feel about
- 4:56both situations. And what I would realized
- 4:59working with this coach was that I was trying to make everything
- 5:03perfect, meaning I was trying to continue to parent in the way
- 5:07that I parented little kids as I was parenting teens.
- 5:10And when they're so little like you, you do have to have kind of
- 5:14control over their schedule and when they eat and when they
- 5:18sleep and when they do their homework.
- 5:19And as they get a little bit older, you, they start to have
- 5:23this pull towards being more independent and deciding, you
- 5:29know, kind of what learning looks like for them and how they
- 5:36want to interact with you as, as as their parent and how they
- 5:41want to interact with their kids.
- 5:43And I realized I was trying to control them.
- 5:47And what this coach really taught me was that I can have
- 5:52complete control and try to control them or I can have a
- 5:55relationship with them. And that was life changing for
- 6:00me because I realized I want a relationship with them.
- 6:05I don't have to control. And that just changed so much
- 6:10for me because I also realized what I was doing at home, I was
- 6:14trying to do at work. I was trying to control the way
- 6:16that I felt. I was trying to compartmentalize
- 6:19and be happy about every call that I ran.
- 6:21And what I realized with this coach was I'm allowed to be sad.
- 6:26I'm allowed to experience like, oh, this is sadness from losing
- 6:30a patient. And also, this might look
- 6:33different from me as a parent than another mom who doesn't
- 6:38work. And this might mean, without
- 6:41judging on myself, I need to take more time to process
- 6:44through some of these losses, some of this sadness.
- 6:47And it might not be that I'm going to be peppy when I pick up
- 6:49my kid, and that's also OK. And so I learned so much from
- 6:54having that coach. My relationship with my
- 6:57teenagers grew. I let go of the control.
- 7:01I realized it didn't have to be my way, that, yeah, there's some
- 7:05things that I'm going to put my foot down to protect them, to
- 7:08have safety with them. But it was OK to let go of the
- 7:12reins and really let them start to take responsibility in how
- 7:17they wanted to create identities and create responsibilities for
- 7:21themselves. And this is when I realized my
- 7:24favorite, favorite time of parenting is the teenage years.
- 7:29And I really think that this coach really taught me how to
- 7:33have relationships with teenagers and with my my own
- 7:38kids that are wanting to create a little bit of space and learn
- 7:43for themselves and grow for themselves.
- 7:45And This is why I think that my house is the house that they
- 7:49want to go. If it's a any day during the
- 7:53week and especially on the weekends, Friday, Saturday,
- 7:55Sunday, you're going to see groups of teenagers at my house.
- 7:58And it's always loud. There's always things going on.
- 8:01We always have snacks and drinks.
- 8:03And I love having conversations with them about what they're
- 8:09going to be doing after high school, what's currently going
- 8:11on in their lives. And it's just mainly really, I
- 8:14think formulate really strong relationships with my kids as
- 8:19they've grown older. And it's also, so I think
- 8:23created safety for their friends to be able to come to me and
- 8:28have really good conversations and open conversations and
- 8:31create that safety and trust for my house.
- 8:34So they know whenever they're there, I'm the person that that
- 8:39that will always be there for them.
- 8:41And that's really what having that coach taught me.
- 8:47The second coach I hired was A and this was like kind of
- 8:52simultaneously the same time as I hired this teenage coach was I
- 8:56hired a business coach. And when I learned these life
- 8:59coaching tools, I was like, I want to be certified in them.
- 9:03I want to learn how I can go out there and I can help other
- 9:07people with these tools, have a managed mind and feel better as
- 9:11well with the same like level of transformation that I got from
- 9:16my first coach. And so I went through the life
- 9:19coach school. I got certified, I did an
- 9:20accelerated program. I remember telling my boss at
- 9:23the time, hey, I need Tuesdays and Thursdays off.
- 9:26I'm willing to work any other day of the week.
- 9:28And I remember I switched schedules with people and it
- 9:30made it really easy actually, because as a flight nurse, you
- 9:34only work 7 to 8 shifts a month as a 24 when you work 24 hour
- 9:38shifts. And that just happened to be for
- 9:40the company I worked for. And you had five days off in a
- 9:43row. And so it was really kind of
- 9:45easy for me to switch off having Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- 9:48I think we had through my certification to become a like
- 9:53life coach, I think it was like 3 hours on Tuesdays and
- 9:55Thursdays. So I just took Tuesdays and
- 9:57Thursdays off. And I switched my schedule
- 9:58around for three months. And after I became certified, I
- 10:03was like, I just want to start coaching people.
- 10:05And so I started my Instagram and letting people know that I'm
- 10:10a coach and that I wanted to really help them manage their
- 10:13mind. And I had the tools to help them
- 10:14feel better. And I started doing that.
- 10:17So I hired a business coach right off the bat who would help
- 10:22me just like really start. How do I step into being a life
- 10:25coach? And this, having this business
- 10:29coach really, really taught me how I could have a highly
- 10:33pressurized job and step into a new identity at the same time.
- 10:38And I think what I really struggled with for a long time
- 10:41as a nurse was compartmentalization.
- 10:44Like I think as healthcare workers were just told, hey,
- 10:47let's get the job done. Let's push down the way we feel
- 10:50and let's do the work. And then when we're off shift,
- 10:55then we can address the way we feel.
- 10:56But the bad part about compartmentalizing is that you
- 11:01never quite get to how you feel when they're bad emotions when
- 11:04you're not working. And then you shove it down and
- 11:07you shove it down and you shove it down and becomes a huge
- 11:09monster later. And I really think that that's
- 11:11how in healthcare burnout is created.
- 11:14I think that that's how mental health and depression and really
- 11:20pushing down some hard emotions happens to healthcare workers.
- 11:24And that's simply why a lot of healthcare workers, I think,
- 11:27have cardiac issues and a lot of health problems and mental
- 11:29health problems later on. And so this business coach
- 11:32really taught me how can I shift into two identities while also
- 11:37having a highly pressurized job and compartmentalizing when I
- 11:40need to. But then also learning to become
- 11:43the person who could process the hard emotions, who could allow
- 11:48myself to be sad when I lost a patient, to allow myself to
- 11:51evaluate what went well, what didn't go well, what could I do
- 11:55better on my next flights. And I really let go of having to
- 12:01do things perfectly. I really learned from this
- 12:04business coach who is still continuing to be my business
- 12:06business coach, to let it be messy and to also it's either
- 12:12learning or growing and failing is OK because there's learning
- 12:16and all of that. And so that was super, super
- 12:20powerful for me because I gave myself permission to feel the
- 12:24hard emotions. I gave myself permission to say,
- 12:29oh, I am so sad after that call. I am so sad that I missed my
- 12:36kids event. I am really disappointed that I
- 12:39had to miss Christmas this year and just to say it out loud,
- 12:42allow myself to process through it and then allow myself to to
- 12:48be messy as learning to be a new life coach while also doing the
- 12:52thing that I really love as a as a flight nurse.
- 12:56And so that's really what I've learned from that coach and what
- 12:59I'm continuing to learn from her and why she still is my business
- 13:03coach is that it really matters what you're thinking, especially
- 13:07if you're a doer and you're a overachiever.
- 13:09There's so many actions that we can keep taking, but we want to
- 13:13make sure that the actions that we're taking aren't from a
- 13:16hustle, aren't from, hey, I got to keep taking them because the
- 13:20more action I take, the more I'm going to get there.
- 13:22And what she really has taught me is how you, how you are as
- 13:25you're getting there will be how you are as you arrive.
- 13:28Meaning like I can take it from hustle and overworking because
- 13:33that's what's helped me get things in my life before.
- 13:36Or I can take it from desire. I can take it from abundance.
- 13:42I can take it action knowing I'm going to get there no matter
- 13:45what. And that might mean that I am
- 13:48taking just as much action. But when you're taking it from a
- 13:51place of confidence that you're going to get there no matter
- 13:54what, you are taking it from sufficiency.
- 13:57You're not taking it from, I got to take a bunch of action
- 14:00because it feels scarce and I just don't know if I can do it.
- 14:03And so that's what this coach has really taught me and what
- 14:09she has really helped me with is be able to change identities, to
- 14:16be able to go from full time nurse to full time life coach
- 14:21and entrepreneurship. And I know a lot of you nurses
- 14:26who listen in on me have thought about entrepreneurship.
- 14:29And I just want to give a little plug that us nurses and people
- 14:33in healthcare, we are awesome entrepreneurs because we know at
- 14:39the highest level how to multitask, how to do it in a
- 14:43highly pressurized environment and how to get it done and how
- 14:48to do it tired and even when we have fear.
- 14:52And so she really helped me make the transition of it's OK to
- 14:58shift in and out of identities. It's OK to shift from I really
- 15:03loved being a flight nurse to I really want to love being a life
- 15:06coach and going all in on that. And it really helped me realize
- 15:12like I can grieve really loving flight and being a nurse and
- 15:17take as much time as I need in that identity while stepping
- 15:22into something new. And it took time.
- 15:24And it was like she really taught me like it's, it's
- 15:27allowed to take as much time as you need to be in the in between
- 15:32identity to step into the new one.
- 15:35And then this left me led me to my current life coach.
- 15:39So I still have my business coach and I have a current life
- 15:42coach as well. Her name is Claire.
- 15:44So shout out to Claire if she is listening.
- 15:47I all of these coaches I met with on a weekly basis.
- 15:50And I think weekly support is so pivotal because we all know so
- 15:55much happens in seven days. And being able to meet with each
- 16:00of my coaches weekly has me develop a game plan, has me
- 16:04process any hard emotions that I'm feeling, and then also helps
- 16:09me put it into action. And then also accountability
- 16:12when I meet with them again to be like, OK, this is what's
- 16:16working. This is what's not working.
- 16:17This is what I want to do differently.
- 16:18This is what's coming up for me. And there's accountability in
- 16:21meetings with someone every week as well.
- 16:25They don't let you quit. They don't let you make excuses.
- 16:28They don't let you give up. And so my current life coach,
- 16:34gosh, how long have I been with her?
- 16:36I think I've been with her for over 2 years now.
- 16:39She has really taught me how to keep going when life is lifing.
- 16:46And I know you guys know what I mean by that.
- 16:49Things happen unexpectedly in our life.
- 16:52Transitions, shifts that we are planning, shifts that we plan on
- 16:57not happening to us. And she's really taught me how
- 17:01to become the person who grows the capability and the capacity
- 17:05to continue to do the hard thing.
- 17:09I think there's just this narrative right now to shy away
- 17:12from the hard. And our brain automatically
- 17:15likes to say, what's the least amount of action that we can do
- 17:20or put forth that's going to create the result we want.
- 17:24And what this coach has really taught me to do is to love the
- 17:27challenge, to grow my capability, to not shy away from
- 17:34the hard, to do the hard, and then to lead with purpose.
- 17:39And I really think I've learned to do this with her through
- 17:44trusting myself, through generating courage, through
- 17:50applying the coaching tools that I know and that she's teaching
- 17:54me. And this has really allowed
- 17:58myself to be authentic, to shift in to doing the hard thing while
- 18:04also chasing my future dreams and who I want to be in the
- 18:08future and what I want to have and create for the future.
- 18:12And I think in healthcare, we're all leaders.
- 18:16I think I've always thought of myself as a leader, but I think
- 18:20it's been hard. I think I saw glimpses of it as
- 18:24I was a child, but as I stepped into leadership roles as an
- 18:27adult in nursing and ultimately in flight nursing, I've realized
- 18:35if you're a leader, there's no getting away from it.
- 18:39You will find the leadership positions and they will find
- 18:42you. And I think anybody who works in
- 18:45healthcare has signed up to be a leader.
- 18:48And so I have really learned from this current life coach how
- 18:55to go with purpose and how to lead not only my life, but how
- 19:00to be the example to other people.
- 19:03And I wanted to give you guys all these examples of the power
- 19:09of having a coach. And I know that the people that
- 19:13I coach, the hundreds of people that I coach, both one-on-one
- 19:16and inside my programs and small groups, they have created
- 19:20individualized results for themselves that they go and
- 19:24they're caring now in their own life so that they can have a
- 19:29managed mind and they can go out and create anything that they
- 19:33want. Love the challenges, love the
- 19:36hard and feel better doing it. And so I want to offer you, if
- 19:41you don't have a coach right now, I want to be your coach.
- 19:45Whether it's inside my programs or whether it's one-on-one.
- 19:49Come find out the power of having a weekly support coach to
- 19:55call you out, to hold you accountable and to have you do
- 20:00the hard work of really feeling your emotions.
- 20:03Successful people are the ones who are willing to feel
- 20:05anything, the good, the bad, the everything in between emotions
- 20:10and instead of pushing them down, it's allowed me to get out
- 20:14of my ruts faster. It's a helped me keep myself
- 20:18from not spinning and confusion and comparison.
- 20:21It's helped me process really hard emotions and really hard
- 20:24things that I've been through and currently going through.
- 20:27It's helped me create resilience to continue to challenge myself
- 20:31to go 1st and to create big goals.
- 20:34And it's given me confidence to authentically be me.
- 20:37Meaning it's helped me realize these are my strengths and also
- 20:42these are my weaknesses. And to celebrate myself.
- 20:45I no longer feel like I have to be stuck in in in a rut.
- 20:51I know what it's like to be in a high value cycle and to be in a
- 20:56flow and I know how to maximize when I am in one.
- 21:01But I also know how to carry myself when I'm going through a
- 21:05low. When I'm falling in a hole and
- 21:07I'm in a rut. I know how to not beat myself
- 21:10up. I know how to not stay in
- 21:12judgement. I know how to pull myself out of
- 21:15it and to process those hard emotions.
- 21:18I know how to lean into strength and embrace.
- 21:21And I love my weaknesses. And having a coach has helped me
- 21:24manage my mind to feel better and to continue to seek
- 21:29uncomfortable things for my growth and for ultimately what
- 21:32I've want. Having a coach, a life coach,
- 21:35has helped me create the life that I love.
- 21:39I was watching this show. Gosh, what's the name of it?
- 21:43I think it's called Eternity. But it's this new movie with
- 21:49Olsen is the girl in it? Gosh, I can't remember her name.
- 21:52And Miles Teller and then the other guy from The Boys in the
- 22:00Boats is in it. But OK, basically the premise of
- 22:03this movie is she has her first husband and he goes off to war
- 22:09and he dies and she's really sad about that.
- 22:11But eventually she meets her second husband, who she marries
- 22:15and spends 60 years with, has kids with and grandchildren
- 22:18with. And then and then they both die
- 22:22and she goes to this place and she has to realize she has to
- 22:26pick her eternity between her first husband and her second
- 22:29husband. But the, the whole premise of
- 22:31the movie is you go back when you arrive at this place.
- 22:35They, they have it like a train station where you have to pick
- 22:38what eternity you want to go to. You arrive in the place where
- 22:43you are the most happiest in life.
- 22:45So some people arrive when they're kids.
- 22:48They said no one arrives as teenagers.
- 22:51Some people arrive in their 20s. And she happened to arrive in
- 22:54her 20s. And it sparked this conversation
- 22:56with my husband. And I asked him if you could go
- 23:00back to the time when you are the happiest and what would it
- 23:03be? And he said it would be when we
- 23:06had our first kid. And I was like, oh, OK, that's
- 23:08interesting. And he's like, what about for
- 23:10you? And I'm like, it would be now.
- 23:12And I didn't hesitate in saying that because life life, having a
- 23:17life coach and having these tools has really taught me how
- 23:21to magnify my happiness. It doesn't mean that I
- 23:25experience great emotions all the time.
- 23:27It's really taught me how do I navigate the hard emotions?
- 23:31How do I make them work for me? How do I process them?
- 23:35And also how do I lean into the emotions that are going to
- 23:39propel me forward. And I truly am the happiest that
- 23:44I have ever been. And having a managed mind has
- 23:49you feeling better and gives you the result of being able to
- 23:53create whatever happiness you want and whatever identity you
- 23:57want in your life. And I want to offer you guys if
- 24:03you don't have a coach and if anything in this episode spoke
- 24:06to you about having one and what it's like to have one, I want to
- 24:11be your coach. I am getting ready next week to
- 24:15open up a new offer and I this is for anybody and I want to
- 24:21offer you guys. Join my e-mail list so you'll be
- 24:23the first to know. And if you are interested in
- 24:26having a one-on-one weekly coach, book a consult.
