- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for June 5, 2026 Less sex than either of you want,
- 0:05and nobody's talking about it.
- 0:07Most of what I have said this week should apply to our sex lives, but often it doesn't.
- 0:12Sexual mismatch is one of the most common complaints couples have,
- 0:15but I want to go a different way about this today.
- 0:18Let's say Chris and Sam are married.
- 0:21Chris wants sex four times a week, and Sam wants it twice. That's a problem,
- 0:26but there's a good chance they're actually having sex only once a week.
- 0:29They are having less sex than either of them want. And odds are,
- 0:33they are both relieving the tension on their own.
- 0:35Multiple studies have shown sexual frequency for married couples has dropped
- 0:39significantly and steadily over the last two decades.
- 0:42And younger couples are not having nearly as much sex as their parents had at the same age.
- 0:47Experts offer theories for why this is, ranging from smartphone use to mental
- 0:51health to being too busy.
- 0:53But no one has proven why we have this epidemic of declining sex.
- 0:57When we look at masturbation rates, we find it's not a lack of drive.
- 1:01But that does not solve the problem.
- 1:03One study found that the more often a married person masturbated,
- 1:06the less happy they were with their sex life, and the less satisfied they were with their marriage.
- 1:10So this is not an innocent trend. It's a problem.
- 1:13Do you assume the lack of sex in your marriage is because your spouse is happy
- 1:17with the amount you're having?
- 1:18That could be true, but for a growing number of couples, both husband and wife want more sex.
- 1:23And most of those couples don't know they both want more. The first step is communication.
- 1:29Ask something such as, are you okay with how often we have sex, or would you like more?
- 1:34If you both want more, that means making time and energy for it.
- 1:38It means not taking care of it yourself.
- 1:40How do you make that happen? If you struggle with that, you could agree that
- 1:44from now on, you will deal with your sex drives as a couple.
- 1:47That might mean laying side by side and masturbating, in the dark,
- 1:51if that's what one of you needs.
- 1:53If only one of you feels the need, then you lie together as that person masturbates.
- 1:58Doing that is a starting point, and it helps you understand how often each of you would like sex.
- 2:03From there, you can work on making it happen by figuring out why it's not and
- 2:06what it will take to change that.
- 2:08This is Paul, and doing sex well requires doing it.
