- 0:04SPEAKER_01: Welcome to my sexy menopause party where we're flipping the script on what it means to feel strong, sexy, and empowered in mid-life and middle.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: Junior host Kim Nicholson, as she gets real about the changes we face in body, mind, and spirit.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: And why this phase of life is an opportunity to redefine what sexy means on your terms.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: This is a space for honest conversations, expert advice, and stories from women just like you.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's go.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Kim Nicholson, and as always, I am so grateful you are here.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: This podcast is about redefining what it means to embrace our bodies, our wellness, and our lives during this time of menopause.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: So today we're gonna dive into a big topic that affects so many of us.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Actually, all of us.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: It's age.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: More specifically, the lie we've been told about what it means to grow older.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: You know, the one I'm talking about, you know, that nagging voice that whispers, oh my god, you're too old for this, or you should act your age.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: I hate that.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: I hated that growing up, but I still hate it.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Um well, let me tell you something.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: That is not your voice.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: That voice that you hear in your head is a voice of a lie.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: And on today's episode, we're gonna break it down, we're gonna challenge it, and we're gonna rewrite the script on what it means to age.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Okay, so now before I get started, I want to offer you a journaling suggestion.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Um, as you listen to today's episode and all of these episodes, I want you to kind of take note of anything that kind of resonates with you, whether it's uh an insight, a challenge, or you know, even a moment where you catch your saying, ah, yes, this is what I needed to hear.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: That's what I want you to write down.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Because journaling can be so powerful.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: It's a powerful tool for reflection and growth.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: I am a big journaler.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: I have, gosh, I probably have three different journals going around my house here that are always active.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: I have one by my bedside, one with my to-do list, and one kind of like my, you know, my goal setting.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: And so, and plus I have a lot more, but love my journals.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: So anyway, wanted to get that out there.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And the other thing, as a wellness practitioner, I also believe in setting goals, like I just said.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: By the end of this episode, I hope you'll feel inspired to at least get at least one goal from how you want to embrace your aging on your terms.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: So let's get into it.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: All right, let's start by being honest, all right?
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Be honest.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: When you were younger, maybe in your 20s or 30s, did you think 50 was old?
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Be real.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Because I know I did.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: I used to picture people in their 50s, you know, sitting in a rocking chair, reminiscing about the good old days.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And then I got here, and guess what?
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: I'm not knitting in some rocking chair.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, it's okay.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: I I mean, I know knit being knitting is trending, but you know, I'm also out here living, thriving, and setting new goals for myself.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: So here's the thing: society has this script that says once we hit a certain age, and you can put in whatever age you think, uh, we're supposed to stop dreaming.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Stop dreaming big, stop dressing boldly, and stop acting vibrant, full of life.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: And that script, it's outdated, it's so outdated, it's irrelevant, it's just freaking plain wrong.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: So I want you to think about this for a second.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Who decided what it means to act your age?
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Or who decided that a number could define how you should live your life?
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Let me hit you with the truth.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Age is just a number, it doesn't define who you are, it doesn't define what you can do or what you're capable of.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: What defines you is your mindset.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: So think about the last time you wanted to try something, but you stopped yourself.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Did you think I'm too old for that?
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: You know, what if it's somebody who said, let's, you know, do, you know, mountain climbing or something?
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Did you say, oh no, can't do that?
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: I'm too old for that.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: I hear that, even from my parents.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: I hear that, oh, we can't do that, we're too old.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness, I hate that.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: But so what if instead, when that little liar of a voice pops into your head and says, I'm too old for that, what if instead you asked yourself, well, will this make me feel alive?
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: I had that moment myself when I turned 50.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: For a second, I thought maybe I should start acting more of my age.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: You know, maybe I shouldn't go out dancing with my husband, maybe I shouldn't do downhill skiing, maybe I shouldn't, shouldn't, shouldn't because of my age.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: And then I realized, what does that even mean?
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: That doesn't even make sense to me.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Acting my age isn't about conforming to, I don't know, somebody else's rules.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: It's about living in a way that feels authentic and fulfilling to me.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: So here's your biggest takeaway.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: I want you to get from today's episode: you are not your age.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: You are not the number of candles on your birthday cake.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: You are not the expectations that society has placed on you.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: You are whoever you choose to be.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Now, let me be real.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Menopause does come with challenges.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Our bodies change.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: We may experience symptoms like hot flashes or night sweats, and that's real.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: But you know what else is real?
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: The power we have to decide how we can navigate this phase of life.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: We're living longer than we ever have before, which means we have decades ahead of us now to thrive, to create, to grow, and to become whomever we want.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: So why let a number hold us back?
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: When people talk about menopause, it drives me crazy.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Um, but when people talk about menopause and they focus on physical symptoms, the changes in the in our weight, our sleep disruptions, our hot flashes, you know, but the very first symptom we need to address isn't physical symptoms of menopause.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: It's the mental, it's the mental symptoms.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: That's the worst one.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: And this is the one that I want to challenge you today.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: It's the belief that aging means decline because it does not.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Again, that is another lie that reaching a certain age makes us less valuable or less beautiful or less sexy or less capable.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: I could go on and on with all the less, less, less and less, but I'm here to tell you aging isn't a punishment.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: It's not, it's a privilege.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: And the moment we stop buying into the lie that aging is something to fear, we then take our power back.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: So here's your challenge for this week.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: The next time you catch yourself thinking, I'm too old for this, I want you to pause.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: I want you to write it down in your journal, then ask yourself, what's really stopping me?
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Do I not feel prepared to do this?
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Do I need to have somebody with me while I do this?
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: I want you to stop and think about it.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Write it down and just get to the truth of the matter.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: What really is stopping you?
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Because it's not your age.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: So refrain them from that thought and instead of saying, I'm too old, try saying something like, Well, I'm going to do this because it makes me feel alive, whether it's wearing that dress that makes you feel so beautiful, sexy, and fantastic, or start a new hobby.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: I, you know, I it doesn't matter if you want to draw stick figures, if you feel like you want to be an artist someday, even though you may be in your 50s, 60s, and 70s, start a hobby that you've always wanted to do.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Or dance.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Dance everywhere, dance in the kitchen, let yourself do it.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: And here's where goal setting comes in.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: I want you to write down one goal for yourself this week that challenges that lie.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's trying something you've always wanted to do.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's skydiving, maybe it's rock climbing, maybe it's joining or taking a painting class.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's just wearing something bold, whatever it is.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Make it personal, make it you, and make it meaningful.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: So here's what I want you to remember as I wrap up today.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Age does not define you.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: It never has, and it never will.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: What defines you is how you choose to show up for yourself, how you embrace your life, and how you decide to age on your terms.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: Stop buying the lie that aging means a decline.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: Start living your truth that aging is a privilege, and you get to define what it looks like for you.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: That's pretty powerful in itself.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: So thank you again for spending this wonderful time with me today on my episode of My Sexy Menopause Body.
