  What I didn't enjoy is the case man, we have got two young men,

  Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan, who are dead.

  Their their story, at least in this mortal coil, is over.

  But it it seems to be overshadowed.

  Actually, you know the I'm, I'm not blaming the documentary film

  makers. They did a pretty darn good job,

  but but it seems that their lives are overshadowed by the

  life of Mackenzie Chirilla and and I think it's only because

  she was a cute girl. I honestly do is that she was an
• 5:12
  attractive young lady and everybody.

  And of course she was like 1718 year old.

  I, I just it's a term I I don't know.

  I want them to feel good about themselves and grown up.

  I feel like I've just watched an hour and a half documentary

  Let's talk about this case, OK? These are just like the

  highlights of the case, OK? Dominic Russo, who was a few
• 6:47
  years older than Mackenzie Sharilla.

  They are a couple. They are a pair.

  They are children and seem to act like children, right?

  One of them seems to be a little more controlling than the other,
• 7:06
  a little more coercive than the other, maybe a little bit of a
• 7:11
  role reversal from what we're used to seeing.

  That person, I believe, was Mackenzie Chirilla.

  I think that she was extremely controlling of Dominic Russo.

  But the way the story goes is these there was a friend group.

  They liked to get high. I think that that Mackenzie was
• 7:34
  a mean girl. I think that she was a bully.
• 7:37
  I think that she got she was used to having her way.
• 7:41
  I think that her parents didn't parent her as much as they tried
• 7:45
  to be her friend and I think that was to her detriment.

  I think they still do that. This is just my opinion, right,
• 7:53
  Based on the stuff that I've seen in the case of the time.

  But after a couple of days of of kind of well, not a couple of

  days, these kids are constantly fighting, right?

  Well, one night they leave a house.

  It's actually one early morning. They leave a house where their
• 8:16
  friend group was gathered, where they're smoking pot and they
• 8:19
  were just hanging out doing stupid stuff like kids do.
• 8:24
  She gets behind the wheel and her boyfriend gets in the
• 8:30
  passenger seat. His friend or their friend
• 8:32
  Davion gets in the back seat and then she purposefully, you know,
• 8:39
  just makes a right hand turn. And then next thing you know,
• 8:42
  they're going 100 miles an hour and bang, crash into the corner
• 8:46
  of a commercial building, a brick building, which
• 8:50
  immediately kills Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan.

  They, they, their lives are just snatched from them.

  And Mackenzie Sharilla survives. She breaks some bones.

  She claims that she has no recollection of anything that
• 9:14
  happened, no idea. And claims that she has a
• 9:19
  condition where she it's called pots.

  It's a condition. What is pots?

  What is the condition known as POTS?

  It's postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, a chronic
• 9:43
  disorder of the autonomic nervous system, primarily causes

  an exaggerated rapid increase in heart rate and dizziness upon

  standing up. OK, it's it's a thing, but
• 9:55
  apparently she is diagnosed with it and and that's one of her
• 10:01
  defenses. I don't know what happened.

  I just don't know what happened. Of course, the oh, oh, I won't.

  I'm getting ahead of myself. All right.

  This is in Ohio. In Ohio, they can choose a bench
• 10:15
  trial, which means no jury. The judge is the judge of the
• 10:18
  facts and the law. Or a jury trial, where the judge
• 10:22
  is the judge of the law and the jury is the judge of the facts.

  She elects a bench trial. I don't know why any defense
• 10:31
  attorney in their right mind would choose a bench trial over
• 10:35
  a jury trial. It's way easier to convince one
• 10:37
  person than it is to convince many people.

  I don't I mean, I don't know. Did you guys ever do you

  remember the the podcast called What's Up, Doc?

  It was my buddy Gemma Delaney where she heard her podcast was

  simply reviewing documentaries. Documentaries is a great

  podcast. She stopped it in 2022.

  What's up Doc. No, I don't want to do that

  because I don't want to watch these documentaries.

  But anyway, this this defense attorney tells her to have a
• 11:14
  bench trial and she takes his advice to have a bench trial.

  And the judge is like, no, you obviously intended on doing
• 11:25
  this. You did not take your foot off
• 11:27
  the gas. You did not hit the brake.
• 11:29
  There was evidence that the car was put into neutral and then
• 11:33
  drive again. There was evidence that the
• 11:35
  steering wheel had been moved. You know, the so-called black
• 11:39
  box recorded all this. Her, I guess her supporters
• 11:47
  would say there's only 5 seconds of evidence of that black box
• 11:51
  and you convicted somebody on five seconds of evidence.

  But that is also not true. There's tons of other digital
• 11:58
  evidence, tons of other digital evidence.

  Anywho, she is she is convicted and she is given 2 concurrent 15
• 12:11
  year to life sentences for the murder of Dominic Russo, the
• 12:15
  young man that she claimed to love and Davion Flanagan.

  By the way, since we're talking about the documentary, I was

  really impressed. This is horrible of me, guys.

  This is horrible me. I was not impressed with
• 12:37
  Mackenzie's parents. I thought they were dill holes.

  I thought I thought like like you were the mean people in high

  school and you decided that that was fun.

  You didn't grow up and go, I see the error of my ways.

  When I was a child, I was a jerk.

  Instead, you're like, remember the glory days and you raised

  one just like it. That's what that's what it felt

  like to me. Now Davion and his siblings were

  adopted and that family just seemed like like they had it

  together, like they had a son that was kind of kind of fell

  into the wrong crowd and they were trying to convince him not

  I, I mean, they had it together. Dominic's family.

  No, same kind of thing for me. They were, they were raising a

  child, a man child and he was, he was probably a good kid.

  They were, they all probably at the heart were good kids and and

  they would have grown out of it. Hopefully.

  I, I don't think Mackenzie ever would have grown out of it, but

  yeah, just fascinating. In fact, Dominic's family, his

  dad and sister full on were in support of Mackenzie until they
• 13:55
  started seeing the evidence at the trial.

  Then they're like, you know, it was just just crazy.
