- 0:00Speaker 1: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 0:20Speaker 2: for millennials who want financial freedom. Today we are having
- 0:24Speaker 2: a chat with.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Hey everyone, my name is Dara Hayes. You may know
- 0:27Speaker 1: me as DJ Tiger Lily. I'm a DJ, a producer
- 0:31Speaker 1: and an influencer from Sydney, Australia and this is my
- 0:34Speaker 1: money Diary.
- 0:35Speaker 2: And let me tell you for those of you who
- 0:37Speaker 2: don't know Zara, she is an absolute legend and a
- 0:40Speaker 2: boss in her own right.
- 0:42Speaker 1: People still think I can't DJ or write music because
- 0:45Speaker 1: I'm a hot chick, and I'm like, come to one
- 0:48Speaker 1: of my shows and stand next to me and watch
- 0:51Speaker 1: me play because I'm a great DJ. It's quite frustrating
- 0:54Speaker 1: because it means that, like I don't know, there's something
- 0:56Speaker 1: about society. You can't be a good looking, confident woman
- 0:59Speaker 1: and like be intelligent or have an opinion or be
- 1:02Speaker 1: really really really good at your craft. Like it's very frustrating.
- 1:05Speaker 2: And as always on our Money Diaries, Ryan John, you
- 1:08Speaker 2: are also here in the background, so let's get into
- 1:11Speaker 2: the chat because to be honest, this was one of
- 1:13Speaker 2: my favorite chats I've ever had about money with someone
- 1:16Speaker 2: of influence. Let's jump straight into the structured questions. Yes,
- 1:24Speaker 2: and you don't get any special treatment here. You get
- 1:26Speaker 2: all of the same questions all our money diarists do.
- 1:29Speaker 2: And the first question is can you please describe your
- 1:32Speaker 2: relationship with money?
- 1:34Speaker 1: I love this question so much, It's so interesting. I
- 1:37Speaker 1: have a really healthy relationship with money and have for
- 1:41Speaker 1: the last ten years. I think it's been quite a
- 1:45Speaker 1: work in progress. Though. My parents are definitely super middle class.
- 1:50Speaker 1: They both have good jobs, but you know, nothing crazy,
- 1:55Speaker 1: and they've always really implemented for me and my sisters
- 1:58Speaker 1: to save and to not be frivolous with our money.
- 2:02Speaker 1: So coming into adulthood, I was always a little bit
- 2:05Speaker 1: nervous to spend money and always had a little bit
- 2:08Speaker 1: of guilt around spending money on nice things. And I've
- 2:12Speaker 1: definitely tried to work through that in the last couple
- 2:16Speaker 1: or like the last ten years, and I feel like
- 2:18Speaker 1: I've got to a really good point now where I
- 2:21Speaker 1: feel comfortable with saving money but also confident with spending money,
- 2:26Speaker 1: which is a really nice place to be at. And
- 2:29Speaker 1: you know, just knowing what makes me feel good and
- 2:32Speaker 1: what is also smart to spend my money on and
- 2:34Speaker 1: kind of combining the two of them. But it's definitely
- 2:37Speaker 1: been a work in progress and it's crazy to see
- 2:40Speaker 1: how many even just small things or comments or you know,
- 2:44Speaker 1: situations from childhood can affect your money story massively. And
- 2:49Speaker 1: it's also been interesting being with my partner for the
- 2:53Speaker 1: last five years and combining our money stories together and
- 2:56Speaker 1: working as a team. Coming from you know, totally different
- 2:59Speaker 1: than it's been fun and exciting to like, you know,
- 3:03Speaker 1: be able to relate to other people and that's definitely
- 3:05Speaker 1: helped me a lot, I think with my relationship with
- 3:08Speaker 1: money as well. I love that.
- 3:10Speaker 2: So to ask a silly question, what do you do
- 3:14Speaker 2: for work in life, I'm DJ.
- 3:16Speaker 1: That's my mool That was my main form of income
- 3:18Speaker 1: until about twelve months ago, so the bulk of my
- 3:22Speaker 1: income was from live performances. And then twelve months ago
- 3:26Speaker 1: that obviously like stopped completely, which was, oh my god,
- 3:32Speaker 1: so nerve wracking. I had probably like six months worth
- 3:34Speaker 1: of shows lined up. Oh my gosh, they we're all canceled, yeah, postponed.
- 3:40Speaker 3: How long you're thinking, Oh, I might have to make
- 3:44Speaker 3: some changes to full stop. It's over like.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Twenty four hours, just like that.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Six months of income, plans, even schedule, maybe even more.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Yeah, like I had like New Year's E've booked in
- 3:54Speaker 1: and stuff like that. And this was in March, but
- 3:58Speaker 1: the day that was like the real pivotal moment. And
- 4:00Speaker 1: I actually flew down to Melbourne to play the Grand
- 4:02Speaker 1: Prix and I'd brought a massive crew with me. I'd
- 4:04Speaker 1: brought a saxophonist, a bongo drummer, a photographer would have
- 4:08Speaker 1: been so fun too.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Also, that's such a casual thing for you to say, oh,
- 4:12Speaker 3: just hanging out with a couple of bongo drammas driving.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I have no creative license, so all of this is just.
- 4:17Speaker 1: So cool to me. I'm like, yeah, let's talk about money.
- 4:19Speaker 2: And you're like, so we've got a saxophonist, and I'm like,
- 4:22Speaker 2: what you can get that?
- 4:23Speaker 1: So what you can get that?
- 4:24Speaker 3: You bring the whole crew down, Yeah, and play like.
- 4:26Speaker 1: A live set. It's they're both so epic, like I'll
- 4:30Speaker 1: just be DJing and they'll totally add lib on my
- 4:33Speaker 1: whole set, which is my.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Gosh, so far right, But did you get to do
- 4:36Speaker 3: that show? Well?
- 4:37Speaker 1: So we landed at Melbourne Airport. Like I said to
- 4:40Speaker 1: my partner in that like that morning, I was like, God,
- 4:42Speaker 1: I don't know what's going on. There's all this stuff
- 4:44Speaker 1: coming into my phone, text messages, on calls and news stories,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and I was like, what are we going to do?
- 4:49Speaker 1: Got on the plane. I was thinking, look, it's going
- 4:51Speaker 1: to be fine. It's gonna be fine.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And I think all of us said that to ourselves
- 4:55Speaker 2: at the start, right, we were all.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Like, it's going to be two weeks, yeah, right, maybe
- 4:59Speaker 1: a month the longest. And then we landed in Melbourne
- 5:01Speaker 1: and I got a call from my agent and he's like,
- 5:03Speaker 1: walk back upstairs and book the first flight home for
- 5:06Speaker 1: all of you because nothing is happening. And I was like,
- 5:09Speaker 1: oh my god. So we grubbed our bags and walked
- 5:12Speaker 1: straight upstairs to Quantus and like booked the next flight home.
- 5:16Speaker 1: And that day, like literally everything got canned.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I remember that day so cooarly. I was the opposite.
- 5:22Speaker 3: I was in Melbourne and I was calling my manager
- 5:24Speaker 3: because I was flying to Sydney to host an event,
- 5:26Speaker 3: and I said, I don't want to get on this
- 5:28Speaker 3: flight because I know the event's not going to happen,
- 5:31Speaker 3: and he's like, trust me, it's on. Fine. I get
- 5:33Speaker 3: on the plane I land, phone beeps, go home.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Oh my god, what that's mental? Yeah, it's it's pretty
- 5:40Speaker 1: gnally when like, you know, you're just the whole movement
- 5:43Speaker 1: of getting ready to perform or you know, be host
- 5:46Speaker 1: an event, and it's just like stopped.
- 5:48Speaker 3: But did you think, oh, next weekend then, or did
- 5:52Speaker 3: you know right away this could be because I guess
- 5:53Speaker 3: we thought, oh yeah, two weeks, you know, then we're back.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I was like quite aware that it was pretty bad
- 5:58Speaker 1: because we traveled to America the month before to do
- 6:01Speaker 1: some work with tourism like Brand USA, and me and
- 6:06Speaker 1: my photographer were like masking and like hand sanitizing the
- 6:10Speaker 1: whole time, and everyone over there was just like, what
- 6:12Speaker 1: are you doing? You're crazy? And so I was like,
- 6:14Speaker 1: can tell you and wells on you America. Yeah, And
- 6:19Speaker 1: so I was thinking, you know, it was probably pretty bad.
- 6:23Speaker 1: I was quite nervous and anxious at that point about
- 6:25Speaker 1: the whole thing. So I was thinking it was going
- 6:27Speaker 1: to be a couple of months. Everyone around me was like, no,
- 6:30Speaker 1: it'll be fine, you'll be back by September. I was
- 6:32Speaker 1: like mmmm, And then like a week later I was
- 6:34Speaker 1: like hmmm. And then like a month later I was
- 6:37Speaker 1: like told you I wouldn't be back by September, like
- 6:39Speaker 1: twelve months later. We're finally kind of bad.
- 6:42Speaker 2: COVID normal is what they're calling it now.
- 6:45Speaker 1: God, all these terms you're on. It is true.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I have replaced a question here and I'm gonna ask you,
- 6:51Speaker 2: have you ever asked for a pay rise?
- 6:54Speaker 1: If so, how I have definitely asked for multiple pay rises. Obviously,
- 7:00Speaker 1: it's really non traditional in this industry. It's not like
- 7:04Speaker 1: I have one boss who I, oh.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Of course look up to, so it doesn't make it
- 7:09Speaker 2: any less nerve recking tize say hey, I actually think
- 7:11Speaker 2: I'm worth more money than what you're currently offering.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 7:15Speaker 1: So I work quite closely with my agent, which is
- 7:19Speaker 1: kind of nice because I have someone to kind of
- 7:22Speaker 1: keep me leveled or back me up if we want
- 7:25Speaker 1: to ask for more money. And every twelve months we
- 7:28Speaker 1: kind of have a meeting and we say, Okay, what
- 7:29Speaker 1: are we charging, what does it look like? What value
- 7:32Speaker 1: are we bringing? And you know, I do remember some
- 7:35Speaker 1: years I've gone in and said I think I'm worth more,
- 7:38Speaker 1: and he's like, well, these numbers haven't changed, these streams
- 7:42Speaker 1: haven't changed. I think we keep it as is and
- 7:44Speaker 1: I'm like feeling a bit deflated, buts though, Yeah. But
- 7:47Speaker 1: then other years he's like, absolutely, you know this and
- 7:50Speaker 1: this has changed, this has gone up. You know, you're
- 7:51Speaker 1: bringing so much more value to the clubs at the moment.
- 7:54Speaker 3: And so when they measure the clubs go when DJ
- 7:56Speaker 3: tiger Li is in, we get ten percent more people,
- 7:58Speaker 3: you know.
- 7:59Speaker 1: They yeah, they'll measure like a bar spend, people coming
- 8:02Speaker 1: through the door, people pre signing up to guest I
- 8:06Speaker 1: didn't even know that. Yeah they can, and like that's cool.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Measure bar spend at times as well, So like if
- 8:13Speaker 1: people are coming in early and spending, or if like
- 8:15Speaker 1: they're coming in late, they can measure so many different
- 8:17Speaker 1: things clicks on links, follow throughs like that.
- 8:20Speaker 3: And so then this is that where you get your
- 8:22Speaker 3: power to say, hey, as you know when I'm on
- 8:25Speaker 3: you know, drinks are selling, people are booking in advance,
- 8:27Speaker 3: that's what you guys like, So.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, And the more you have good examples of
- 8:32Speaker 1: you coming in and like selling a heap of tickets
- 8:34Speaker 1: or breaking records for whether it's you know, bar spend
- 8:37Speaker 1: or I don't know. At the moment, it's like pre
- 8:43Speaker 1: registering for events and stuff, like that, So all that
- 8:45Speaker 1: kind of stuff really really helps. And yeah, so I
- 8:48Speaker 1: have had to ask for like, you know, pay rises
- 8:50Speaker 1: in that sense, but it is really good having someone
- 8:53Speaker 1: who has been able to kind of support and or
- 8:58Speaker 1: you know, navigate it with me. It's great having that buffer.
- 9:02Speaker 2: I like that because I think that that's also something
- 9:04Speaker 2: that a lot of people don't have. And even if
- 9:07Speaker 2: it's not an agent, which you know, I don't have
- 9:09Speaker 2: an agent. You guys were talking about your managers and
- 9:11Speaker 2: I'm like, I.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Reply to my own email. It's just on you guys,
- 9:16Speaker 1: not anymore.
- 9:16Speaker 3: This is sitting on our laptop your emails right now,
- 9:19Speaker 3: watch your maw.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Okay, that is a very good point. But I definitely
- 9:23Speaker 2: don't have a manager that works in the same capacity.
- 9:27Speaker 2: And I think that it's really important to remember, even
- 9:30Speaker 2: if you don't have a manager or an agent, even
- 9:33Speaker 2: having a friend to bounce back off and be like, hey, well,
- 9:35Speaker 2: this is the value I think I bring to the table,
- 9:37Speaker 2: and then even sometimes being that friend for other people
- 9:39Speaker 2: and being like, hey, like you said that you you know,
- 9:41Speaker 2: wanted to pay rise, but like, what else are you
- 9:43Speaker 2: bringing to the table this year that you weren't last year?
- 9:45Speaker 2: I think can help you have that conversation.
- 9:48Speaker 3: We did an episode on pay Rises and it's like
- 9:50Speaker 3: you've read the Bible and that because lots of people
- 9:53Speaker 3: would go in and say, I want more money because
- 9:55Speaker 3: I'm buying a car and I'm thinking of getting a
- 9:56Speaker 3: mortgage and stuff. But you go in and say, here's
- 9:59Speaker 3: what you get out of it, and he's sort of saying,
- 10:01Speaker 3: and it's the same when you talk to a boss
- 10:03Speaker 3: from pay Rise. Since I've been working here, I'm doing
- 10:06Speaker 3: this well, I'm hitting my targets. I'm bringing in the
- 10:07Speaker 3: business this much, and that's why I think I should
- 10:10Speaker 3: be worth a little bit more. Instead of being like
- 10:12Speaker 3: more money, please, you have to.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Show them all the value that you're bringing, being like,
- 10:16Speaker 1: I'm doing this and this now, I'm doing a B
- 10:18Speaker 1: and C more than I was when I started. What
- 10:21Speaker 1: would you do without me? Yeah, it's kind of you
- 10:24Speaker 1: should be.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Everyone who's Listening's agent DJ Tiger Lily will be negotiating
- 10:29Speaker 3: on my behalf.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I'll invite you. I'll invite you in for that.
- 10:31Speaker 2: And also one day, when I luckily get married, I'll
- 10:34Speaker 2: be like, who's the saxophonist? I want one of those?
- 10:37Speaker 2: And the bono drama. Don't forget I need a DJ,
- 10:39Speaker 2: a bongo drama. I need a saxophonist, like I'm having
- 10:42Speaker 2: a party random.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Obviously the pricing would be more than the regular one.
- 10:46Speaker 3: But do you get invited still to do weddings and
- 10:48Speaker 3: private shows and stuff like that?
- 10:51Speaker 2: You just say no?
- 10:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I just say no. I do get asked to do.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Is there a few like random millionaires that'll go, hey,
- 10:57Speaker 3: look we're on the Sydney Harbor and we're ready. We're
- 10:59Speaker 3: willing to pay well.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I don't know if there are hit me up in
- 11:04Speaker 1: my Instagram a cheap rate, cheap rate for the millionaires.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I like that.
- 11:12Speaker 1: You know what? Actually I have been hit up two
- 11:14Speaker 1: is in a row to go to Monaco and play
- 11:17Speaker 1: on like millionaires boats.
- 11:19Speaker 2: What are you doing saying no to this?
- 11:21Speaker 3: Why are doing.
- 11:23Speaker 1: I couldn't do both of the gigs because I already
- 11:26Speaker 1: had like stuff that was pre booked. Teach them it's anca. Also,
- 11:33Speaker 1: do not hire me as your agent.
- 11:35Speaker 2: I'll be like, so you're ditching everybody, We're going.
- 11:37Speaker 1: To I'm coming first classickets. Let's go. You're going to
- 11:41Speaker 1: earn a whole lot less, but and piss off a
- 11:44Speaker 1: heap of people. That is not my problem. That is
- 11:49Speaker 1: all right.
- 11:50Speaker 2: So next question, do you feel confident making decisions around money?
- 11:54Speaker 1: Yes and no, And this goes back to what we
- 11:57Speaker 1: were talking about before in regards to having someone to
- 11:59Speaker 1: be off which was my agent. There are some decisions
- 12:04Speaker 1: which I definitely do feel confident about making, but that's
- 12:08Speaker 1: definitely come with practice and over time. But shout out
- 12:13Speaker 1: to my dad. He is actually the biggest legend and
- 12:16Speaker 1: he helps me so much financially. He's like an accountant
- 12:20Speaker 1: by trade, but now it does kind of other My.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Dad's an accountant too. They are good eggs.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Yeah, they're so good, and he is really my I
- 12:30Speaker 1: suppose word of reason. I recently bought a new car
- 12:35Speaker 1: and I was flogging my old car for like almost
- 12:38Speaker 1: ten years and really needed a new one, but was
- 12:40Speaker 1: putting it off because I am, deep down like a
- 12:42Speaker 1: bit of a stinge.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I love that, like I have no real need to
- 12:47Speaker 2: be a stinge. But when a stinge, always a stinch.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. And it was getting to the point
- 12:52Speaker 1: of it being quite ridiculous. The car really needed help,
- 12:55Speaker 1: and the help was going to be expensive, so I
- 12:57Speaker 1: just thought it's time to get something a bit newer
- 13:00Speaker 1: and a bit more modern. And I found this secondhand
- 13:02Speaker 1: car that I thought awesome, great, this ticks all the boxes.
- 13:05Speaker 1: But I still was nervous to commit. So talked to
- 13:09Speaker 1: my dad and he's so good because he just runs
- 13:11Speaker 1: kind of through the numbers with me. We like punched
- 13:13Speaker 1: them out together and look at, you know, my budget
- 13:16Speaker 1: and the timeline and how long it's going to take
- 13:18Speaker 1: to pay off X y Z. And it's kind of
- 13:20Speaker 1: nice to have someone there who can like just kind
- 13:24Speaker 1: of assure me with big purchase items or like big
- 13:27Speaker 1: kind of decisions that I'm doing something that isn't totally
- 13:31Speaker 1: crazy and unnecessary. So did you buy your car secondhand?
- 13:34Speaker 2: Not brand new?
- 13:35Speaker 1: Yeah? Who are a queen? As you said on your episode,
- 13:39Speaker 1: and never buy a new car exactly.
- 13:42Speaker 2: I feel like it's logical, and I think that a
- 13:44Speaker 2: lot of people are like, oh, but if I had
- 13:46Speaker 2: the money, I'd buy brand news. Like no, no, no, no,
- 13:49Speaker 2: even people with money should not be buying brand new.
- 13:52Speaker 1: It's silly. Can I tell you about my car? Because
- 13:54Speaker 1: I want to know.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I want to know is the one before the new one?
- 13:58Speaker 1: All right? Tell me about the new one? So I
- 14:02Speaker 1: bought it from Pickles in Brisbane. So the auction mash,
- 14:06Speaker 1: the auction thing. Yep. So I took a bit of
- 14:08Speaker 1: a risk because it's Pickles. But I bought a car
- 14:12Speaker 1: that was two years old, had really low mileage, like
- 14:15Speaker 1: eight thousand k's on it, so.
- 14:16Speaker 2: It had already hit the depreciation. You didn't have to
- 14:19Speaker 2: carry that one.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Yep, yep, yep. And what I didn't realize this was
- 14:23Speaker 1: like an unknown win to me at the time. The
- 14:26Speaker 1: Brisbane car market is totally different to the Sydney car mark.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Every city is different.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, I shipped the car down for five hundred bucks,
- 14:36Speaker 1: but I reckon I saved almost twenty grand who compared
- 14:40Speaker 1: to the car market.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Apparently Perth is the cheapest and I have to live
- 14:44Speaker 3: in Perth. And a friend flew over, stayed with me
- 14:46Speaker 3: for the weekend, picked up his new car and drove
- 14:48Speaker 3: it back to Melbourne. He's like, oh, it's going to
- 14:50Speaker 3: save me ten grand.
- 14:51Speaker 1: I was like, okay, Well, the guy at Pickles in
- 14:53Speaker 1: Sydney was saying what they would have been able to
- 14:55Speaker 1: sell it for was, yeah, fifteen grand maybe plus what
- 15:00Speaker 1: the guys in Brisbane were selling it for. And you know,
- 15:02Speaker 1: I still got like a mechanic to go in and
- 15:04Speaker 1: give it like a little once over. Obviously they can't
- 15:06Speaker 1: fully hoist it up at Pickles and do all the
- 15:08Speaker 1: in depth stuff, so you are running a little bit
- 15:10Speaker 1: of a risk in that respect. But yeah, I am
- 15:14Speaker 1: like a massive Pickles fan through and through to the
- 15:16Speaker 1: point where I then sold them my old car because
- 15:18Speaker 1: they made it so simple.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Wow.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Love Pickles. Yeah, shout out, shout out. That's your money
- 15:24Speaker 1: to be sweet. Yeah, that is my money win for sure.
- 15:27Speaker 1: I love that.
- 15:28Speaker 2: But I do want to pivot away from cars for
- 15:30Speaker 2: a second and ask you when you first started being
- 15:34Speaker 2: a DJ, what were you charging? How did that work?
- 15:37Speaker 1: Nothing? Nothing?
- 15:38Speaker 2: You just did it for free, free drink cards.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Baby, that'd be the same as most money win creative endeavors.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so, right, I felt like everybody starts
- 15:46Speaker 2: for But it's interesting to know that story, right because
- 15:48Speaker 2: obviously you're now at a point where you are in
- 15:51Speaker 2: demand and you are actually a professional at this and
- 15:54Speaker 2: so you're being paid for it. But I think it's
- 15:56Speaker 2: interesting to understand the journey of like, how did you
- 15:59Speaker 2: go from being free drink cards, which I mean at
- 16:01Speaker 2: the time when you were probably starting. You're like, this
- 16:03Speaker 2: is so epic, I get free drinks to want to
- 16:07Speaker 2: charge for events, Like, how did you make that leap?
- 16:09Speaker 2: Because I know in our community there are a lot
- 16:11Speaker 2: of creatives and musicians and people that probably are doing
- 16:15Speaker 2: free work at the moment. How do you know when
- 16:18Speaker 2: is the time? But also how do you have that
- 16:20Speaker 2: conversation because you don't have an agent? Then no, absolutely no,
- 16:23Speaker 2: I didn't have an agent. I think for the first
- 16:25Speaker 2: four years I was doing everything myself, from my bookings
- 16:29Speaker 2: to my invoicing, to my tax to my like performance
- 16:33Speaker 2: stuff everything, which is kind of overwhelming to think.
- 16:35Speaker 1: About that now. So it's a really good question and
- 16:38Speaker 1: there's no right answer, and it's kind of tricky to know.
- 16:41Speaker 1: I think I was probably playing for free or for
- 16:45Speaker 1: very low amounts, like twenty five dollars an hour. But
- 16:48Speaker 1: when you think about like that sounds like a standard,
- 16:50Speaker 1: but from a performance perspective, it's kind of different because
- 16:53Speaker 1: if you've got a one hour set once a week,
- 16:56Speaker 1: you're making twenty five dollars y yeah, and week.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Thought about the music eler in the day, and you've
- 17:00Speaker 3: got to.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Get a preparation travel all that stuff. Yeah, So I
- 17:03Speaker 1: think you know, that stayed like that for a couple
- 17:06Speaker 1: of months, and I just took a bit of a
- 17:09Speaker 1: leap in the deep end, and I remember like upping
- 17:11Speaker 1: my invoice rate to like eighty five dollars an hour
- 17:14Speaker 1: and thinking, oh God, what's going to happen here.
- 17:16Speaker 3: I've ended my own career, I've overcharged.
- 17:19Speaker 1: But people were actually totally fine with it. I remember
- 17:22Speaker 1: having lots of different conversations with other DJs in the
- 17:24Speaker 1: industry at the time, being like, what should I be charging?
- 17:27Speaker 1: How much do you guys charge? So I think like
- 17:30Speaker 1: asking people if you're in a creative industry that are
- 17:33Speaker 1: around you and maybe at a similar ish level, that's
- 17:35Speaker 1: also really helpful to get kind of some idea of
- 17:38Speaker 1: what venues are willing to pay at the moment. In
- 17:41Speaker 1: regards to the COVID stuff, it's like totally different to normal,
- 17:44Speaker 1: even for me now being like a professional. I suppose
- 17:49Speaker 1: everyone has different amounts of money to spend. So I
- 17:51Speaker 1: think that's something really important to keep in mind if
- 17:53Speaker 1: you are a creative at the moment, you know, trying
- 17:57Speaker 1: to speak to whether it's clubs or gallery or whatever,
- 18:00Speaker 1: about how much you're going to charge, But yeah, I
- 18:03Speaker 1: would say, I spoke a lot to people around me
- 18:05Speaker 1: and then yeah, did definitely take some random leaps and
- 18:11Speaker 1: hope that they worked. And look, no one ever said
- 18:13Speaker 1: no in those early days, but I wasn't asking for
- 18:17Speaker 1: a really stupid amounts.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Is the Djay world like collaborative in that people like, oh,
- 18:23Speaker 3: these guys looking for people like you all helping each
- 18:24Speaker 3: other out? Or is a bit competitive or a bit
- 18:26Speaker 3: of both. It depends on the person. What's the sort of.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Bit of both? Definitely depends on the person. And I
- 18:31Speaker 1: would suggest if people are being dickheads and like, you know,
- 18:34Speaker 1: really competitive, steer away from them because there are really
- 18:37Speaker 1: nice people out there who will help. And I often
- 18:40Speaker 1: get sent loads of random gigs on like Instagram or emails,
- 18:43Speaker 1: and I pass them on to my agent and say, oh,
- 18:46Speaker 1: this chick would be great for it, or this guy
- 18:48Speaker 1: would be great for it, because I know it's not
- 18:49Speaker 1: going to be suitable suitable for I say, as.
- 18:52Speaker 3: The lowest earning person of my management talent agency, the
- 18:55Speaker 3: leftovers I get from the bigger people is just fantastic,
- 19:01Speaker 3: Thank you. They definitely won't be doing that, but Ryan's
- 19:03Speaker 3: probably free like on that day, so he's ready to go,
- 19:06Speaker 3: so get involved. But it's interesting though, because with when
- 19:09Speaker 3: you are, you know, a freelancer, and it's a competitive marketplace.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Some people are really helpful and like you said, I
- 19:16Speaker 3: don't know, the word leftover sounds really bad, but.
- 19:18Speaker 2: That's what it is. But you've got someone's crumbs.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Yeah. But I actually saw this post the other day.
- 19:22Speaker 3: I think someone shared it in the Shehes in the
- 19:23Speaker 3: Money group. But it was like, surround yourself with women
- 19:26Speaker 3: who would bring your name up when an opportunity arises.
- 19:28Speaker 1: I like that.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Yeah, So is that the kind of people that someone says, hey, Ryan,
- 19:32Speaker 3: do you can you detail thing?
- 19:34Speaker 2: No?
- 19:34Speaker 3: I can't, but you know I know someone who can
- 19:36Speaker 3: versus someone goes no, and it doesn't help me. So
- 19:38Speaker 3: then I'm not interested anymore.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I really don't mentality yet.
- 19:41Speaker 2: No, And I just feel like you are lifted by
- 19:44Speaker 2: lifting other people. And you say this all the time,
- 19:46Speaker 2: Ryan saying yeah, what's you're saying?
- 19:49Speaker 1: No? No, no, I want to hear it from the master.
- 19:51Speaker 3: A rising tide lifts all boats.
- 19:53Speaker 1: It does warms my heart, Yeah.
- 19:57Speaker 2: It does, Like you know, you don't actually dull your
- 20:00Speaker 2: by shedding it on other people and other people's lights.
- 20:03Speaker 2: It's just so much more powerful together. And you know,
- 20:05Speaker 2: we get this a lot in finance where people are like, oh,
- 20:08Speaker 2: why did you let another financial advisor on your podcast?
- 20:10Speaker 2: All this, and I'm like, it just makes the world
- 20:12Speaker 2: a better place. Like I'm not here to talk about
- 20:16Speaker 2: you know, just me, Like it's better when it's together.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Yeah, And if you want to email us at DJ
- 20:21Speaker 3: at Tiger Lily's Leftovers that she's on the money dot
- 20:23Speaker 3: com dot au, we can put you up just about
- 20:25Speaker 3: your career.
- 20:25Speaker 2: I'm not a DJ, but you know what I can do,
- 20:27Speaker 2: get one of your sets on YouTube and play it
- 20:29Speaker 2: for them.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Hell's yeah, I can do that.
- 20:32Speaker 3: I could he some drinks accounts a part of the right.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Come, it's off the airways, right and drop. What would
- 20:43Speaker 1: your DJ name be?
- 20:44Speaker 2: DJ VICKI d love it girlfriend, It'd be disgusting, but
- 20:50Speaker 2: it works.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Australia is such a tall, poppy syndrome community, I think,
- 20:59Speaker 1: especially when it comes still like niche markets. So yeah,
- 21:03Speaker 1: it's interesting and I do remember like so many you know,
- 21:07Speaker 1: funny stories where DJs are like elbowing each other out
- 21:10Speaker 1: of the way to get to get gigs. Pretty much,
- 21:12Speaker 1: and I think it definitely pays off just being super
- 21:14Speaker 1: friendly and honest and you know, a genuine nice person,
- 21:18Speaker 1: and like you miss out on gigs, Like to this day,
- 21:20Speaker 1: I still miss out on gigs because like we're not
- 21:23Speaker 1: pushy enough or we're not charging low enough rates. But
- 21:25Speaker 1: I think there is also merit in keeping your ground
- 21:30Speaker 1: as a creative with how much you're willing to charge
- 21:32Speaker 1: and how much value you think that you bring to
- 21:34Speaker 1: the table. So to all my creatives out there, value yourselves.
- 21:38Speaker 1: You guys are important.
- 21:40Speaker 3: So we talk a lot about this, and especially she's
- 21:42Speaker 3: on the money as a business and other things that
- 21:44Speaker 3: Victoria and I do a lot of creatives. Now, it's
- 21:47Speaker 3: not necessarily I have this one thing that I do
- 21:49Speaker 3: that I make money. It's like having these multiple little
- 21:52Speaker 3: trickles and stuff. So don't go into detail. But with
- 21:56Speaker 3: doing Instagram stuff you mentioned before, you do so the
- 21:58Speaker 3: influencer work and DJs. Like, how many different ways are
- 22:01Speaker 3: there that you make money?
- 22:02Speaker 1: Yes, lots, which is great, And this is something that
- 22:05Speaker 1: I really wanted to talk about because it's what I
- 22:07Speaker 1: really wanted to is diversifying your income streams for maximum safety.
- 22:12Speaker 1: And like this last twelve months has been. So it's
- 22:16Speaker 1: like it has just shown me that through and through
- 22:17Speaker 1: because I literally would make I reckon seventy percent of
- 22:20Speaker 1: my income from like music and performing and stuff, and
- 22:23Speaker 1: it literally went down to zero and I had to think, Okay,
- 22:26Speaker 1: what else, Oh, like what am I going to do
- 22:28Speaker 1: to kind of compensate this and keep my staff employed
- 22:31Speaker 1: and keep my business alive? And so social media really
- 22:34Speaker 1: did take a massive kind of step up in that respect,
- 22:38Speaker 1: and yeah, it's definitely plays quite a major part even
- 22:42Speaker 1: at the moment in regards to making money for me.
- 22:47Speaker 1: I have different types of relationships on social media, so
- 22:49Speaker 1: ongoing sponsorships as well as more short term like you know,
- 22:54Speaker 1: one to two to three month relationships with brands which
- 22:56Speaker 1: is really awesome. And then also have like a share portfolio,
- 23:02Speaker 1: but it's a very long term perspective share portfolio. So
- 23:06Speaker 1: I'm mouff to my own heart, Yeah, not intending on
- 23:09Speaker 1: touching it anytime soon. So I wouldn't say, oh, yeah,
- 23:11Speaker 1: I'm making money from that, but you.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Are making money from that, and that income is I'm
- 23:16Speaker 2: assuming being reinvested for your future.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, so, yeah, long term Futurdara will hopefully be
- 23:23Speaker 1: very thankful.
- 23:23Speaker 3: So would you put yourself in a similar category to
- 23:27Speaker 3: an athlete in that I'm guessing the lifestyle of being
- 23:30Speaker 3: up at three am playing music, traveling, djaying is maybe
- 23:34Speaker 3: a young person's game, and when you're fifty or sixty
- 23:36Speaker 3: you don't want to do it anymore. Like are you
- 23:38Speaker 3: sort of thinking I got to earn the money now
- 23:40Speaker 3: while I can kind of vibe?
- 23:41Speaker 1: Yeah, my partner says I will be djaying when I'm
- 23:44Speaker 1: sixty with a blue wig on sid Are I really
- 23:48Speaker 1: hope for my sake and our future children's sake that
- 23:51Speaker 1: I'm not? Is that like very sorry?
- 23:53Speaker 2: I want you to be doing it? If that wouldn't
- 23:56Speaker 2: be so cool?
- 23:57Speaker 3: Is that something you were aware of it? Like, oh,
- 23:59Speaker 3: like I can't just assume that what I earned and
- 24:01Speaker 3: how I earned it this year is how I'll earn
- 24:03Speaker 3: it in ten years. Yeah.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Absolutely, I'm like, very very very aware of that, which
- 24:08Speaker 1: is why I have tried to be relatively smart with
- 24:12Speaker 1: my money and not buy you know, really ridiculously expensive
- 24:16Speaker 1: you know, why don't buy a designer anything, Like, don't
- 24:19Speaker 1: buy you know, stupid crazy sports cars that I know
- 24:21Speaker 1: a lot of, like athletes or same musicians do. I've
- 24:25Speaker 1: tried in the last five years to work really well
- 24:27Speaker 1: with my financial advisors and set up long term, hopefully
- 24:32Speaker 1: safe investments for the future because I am really aware that,
- 24:36Speaker 1: you know, I'm twenty nine now. Let's say I have
- 24:39Speaker 1: kids in four years. I don't know how that's going
- 24:42Speaker 1: to go. Being pregnant and having babies and being up
- 24:44Speaker 1: at three am d jing like I don't necessarily see
- 24:47Speaker 1: the two lifestyles is very conducive, and I really want
- 24:51Speaker 1: to create and set up an environment where I feel
- 24:54Speaker 1: like I can take time off to have kids and
- 24:57Speaker 1: can then you know, after I've done that, be like, Okay,
- 25:00Speaker 1: what's the situation, what do I feel like doing? So yeah,
- 25:02Speaker 1: I'm very aware that I mentor in my thirties and
- 25:07Speaker 1: you know, want to have kids soon and also don't
- 25:10Speaker 1: know how much longer I will be DJing for It's
- 25:13Speaker 1: kind of a scary thought. But then there's also so
- 25:15Speaker 1: much opportunity, Like social media, for example, is just absolutely
- 25:19Speaker 1: brilliant with what it allows you to do. There's so
- 25:21Speaker 1: much on there and the scope is so huge. So
- 25:24Speaker 1: I'm not worried, I'm excited, but it's definitely something.
- 25:27Speaker 2: I'm aware of all right, So you mentioned your share
- 25:30Speaker 2: portfolio before, and my next question is probably already answered,
- 25:35Speaker 2: but that is do you currently invest? If so, how,
- 25:37Speaker 2: And I'd like to know a little bit more about
- 25:39Speaker 2: one how you made the decision to invest, because we
- 25:41Speaker 2: already know you do, but two like what does that
- 25:44Speaker 2: look like for you?
- 25:45Speaker 1: Yeah? Cool? Love this? So I suppose I invest in
- 25:49Speaker 1: two different types of ways in that super being that like,
- 25:53Speaker 1: you know, investment that we all kind of should be doing.
- 25:56Speaker 1: And then I do have a share portfolio that I
- 25:58Speaker 1: have created with my financial advisors. Initially, when they made
- 26:03Speaker 1: it for me five years ago, I didn't know anything
- 26:06Speaker 1: about anything, and I just thought it was, you know,
- 26:10Speaker 1: going and popping into the market and having a bit
- 26:13Speaker 1: of fun and that was it. And I only realized
- 26:16Speaker 1: last year crazy that there were things that my money
- 26:20Speaker 1: was being invested in that I didn't approve of, being
- 26:22Speaker 1: like mining and coal and live animal exports, tobacco, gambling,
- 26:26Speaker 1: all this kind of stuff. So twelve months ago ish
- 26:30Speaker 1: I worked with my financial advisors on changing that to
- 26:33Speaker 1: a total green portfolio, which was epic. It wasn't the
- 26:37Speaker 1: smartest financial decision because I suppose the green market is
- 26:42Speaker 1: kind of newer so there's less I suppose reliability. It's
- 26:44Speaker 1: not like those blue chip stuff that just like are
- 26:46Speaker 1: super reliable.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Yeah, but they could be the big, juicy long term
- 26:49Speaker 3: wins though you say it's not as valuable, mate, Like,
- 26:51Speaker 3: who's to say, yeah, it may.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Be yeah, yeah.
- 26:54Speaker 2: And I find that really interesting because I have that
- 26:56Speaker 2: conversation with clients all the time because I'm an ethical
- 26:59Speaker 2: owner investor, so a lot of people are always saying like, Okay,
- 27:03Speaker 2: well the market performs said this, and I go, well, okay,
- 27:06Speaker 2: but in my business, we don't actually compare to that
- 27:09Speaker 2: benchmark because that benchmark is an indicative of the stocks
- 27:13Speaker 2: that we're looking at here. So I even find it
- 27:15Speaker 2: quite interesting when you do compare it because they're completely
- 27:18Speaker 2: different asset classes, They're completely different investments in my eyes,
- 27:22Speaker 2: so if you compare it to the average, it's kind
- 27:24Speaker 2: of like, yeah, I'm obviously taking a little bit of
- 27:26Speaker 2: a hit, But personally, I don't genuinely believe that in
- 27:30Speaker 2: fifty years, when I will still actually be alive, give
- 27:33Speaker 2: a modern science, the stocks that other people who are
- 27:37Speaker 2: investing in today will be as profitable because I feel
- 27:39Speaker 2: like there's a lot of scarcity involved in those as well. Absolutely,
- 27:42Speaker 2: and we're getting smarter and we have bigger voices, and
- 27:45Speaker 2: like we talk about live animal experts. I hate live
- 27:48Speaker 2: animal exports and I really yeah, it makes me sick.
- 27:51Speaker 2: I cannot even watch those videos. People send them to
- 27:53Speaker 2: me and they're like, hey, watch this.
- 27:55Speaker 3: A lot of people send them to you because I am.
- 27:57Speaker 2: That they know that I'm some kind of vicky vegan
- 28:00Speaker 2: hippie and they actually are like, oh, you'll love this.
- 28:02Speaker 2: I'm like, no, no, no, That's why I'm not eating at them.
- 28:04Speaker 3: I'm actively avoiding this.
- 28:06Speaker 2: I actively avoid this. I can't see that being the future.
- 28:10Speaker 2: And so for my business, it's investing in the future,
- 28:13Speaker 2: and it just makes sense. So you're right, you probably
- 28:15Speaker 2: take it your financial hit now. It's also a bit
- 28:17Speaker 2: more expensive to invest ethically because it involves being more involved.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Yes, there was more expenses in that respect, and then
- 28:24Speaker 1: also expenses in changing the portfolio over, but absolutely no regrets.
- 28:29Speaker 1: For me. It was like a non negotiable when I
- 28:31Speaker 1: found out that, you know, my money was helping or
- 28:34Speaker 1: assisting or being invested in things that I wasn't okay with. Yeah,
- 28:37Speaker 1: we changed it over immediately, which was cool. And then
- 28:39Speaker 1: the final thing is I've been really really lucky enough
- 28:42Speaker 1: to be able to invest in some property, which has
- 28:46Speaker 1: been cool. And once again, it's just like slow, long
- 28:50Speaker 1: term burns, not trying to make quick cash grabs or
- 28:53Speaker 1: quick wins. The point of them is to have them
- 28:56Speaker 1: there and have them tick away and slowly pay them.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Have you been even there? She's on the money Facebook group. Yes,
- 29:03Speaker 3: there has been some significant landlord v Renter passionate discussions.
- 29:11Speaker 3: There's savage I'm a landlord and a rentor. I'm literally
- 29:14Speaker 3: both sides of the argument, and I'm sitting there being like,
- 29:16Speaker 3: oh my god, my.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Own group, what are you guys? It is really difficult though,
- 29:26Speaker 1: because I try and be a really great understanding landlord landlord,
- 29:31Speaker 1: and then you really hope, like the goodcom will come
- 29:33Speaker 1: back to you and like, you know, make your landlord
- 29:36Speaker 1: be super nice to you. We have a great we're
- 29:37Speaker 1: renting at the moment, and we have a great landlord,
- 29:39Speaker 1: which is awesome, but like you know, that could change.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Yeah, so you're the same to me, You're both sides
- 29:43Speaker 3: of the story. Yeah.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 29:44Speaker 2: I think it's really interesting though, because so many people
- 29:47Speaker 2: think that landlords must just be these really rich moguls
- 29:50Speaker 2: that have millions of houses and like that's how they
- 29:52Speaker 2: derive their income. And it's like, no, I bought that
- 29:54Speaker 2: property with the money that I've worked my ass off
- 29:57Speaker 2: to get, and now that income is you know, my
- 29:59Speaker 2: future in my retirement, and you are putting me in this.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Box of being mogal that probably barely breaks even. Yeah, yeah,
- 30:07Speaker 3: are usually a bit of a loss.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Yeah exactly, I'm not exactly. I mean, you're not rich, but.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Excuse me the attitude with Victoria around.
- 30:19Speaker 2: So moving on, I feel like you've got a lot
- 30:22Speaker 2: of good money habits, but I'd like to ask you,
- 30:24Speaker 2: what is your worst money habit?
- 30:27Speaker 1: Yeah? This is bad. So I never shop, but when
- 30:31Speaker 1: I do, I am a really terrible shopper. I go
- 30:35Speaker 1: online in a rage, thinking I'm sick of all the
- 30:38Speaker 1: clothes I wear. I probably buy like four or five
- 30:41Speaker 1: hundred dollars worth of things, which is, you know, let's
- 30:44Speaker 1: say five outfits, a heap of them, like will calm,
- 30:47Speaker 1: they won't fit properly, and I'll be like, yeah, I
- 30:49Speaker 1: will send them back. I will send them back. And
- 30:51Speaker 1: then like I'm pushing it to like that twenty eight
- 30:54Speaker 1: day limit and then off and if forget, and I
- 30:56Speaker 1: literally hate myself for it so much much for not
- 31:00Speaker 1: doing that. What do you say, twenty four hours think
- 31:03Speaker 1: about it? Yeah, way, I don't do that. I get
- 31:05Speaker 1: on in a rage and I just purchase all this
- 31:07Speaker 1: stuff and it's really toxic. So that's my money confession. First,
- 31:12Speaker 1: I love that we relatable.
- 31:15Speaker 3: We may have another use for DJ Tiger Lily's leftovers
- 31:17Speaker 3: that she's on the money. If you want some clothes,
- 31:20Speaker 3: make them.
- 31:20Speaker 1: You're really fashionable.
- 31:21Speaker 3: Do you feel, as, especially as a female being in
- 31:25Speaker 3: the entertainment industry, the pressure to always be wearing something
- 31:29Speaker 3: different because you're on Instagram all the time, and heaven
- 31:31Speaker 3: forbid you would wear the same clothes again? Right?
- 31:33Speaker 1: Yeah? I used to, But I'm like a massive fan
- 31:36Speaker 1: of like re wearing stuff now. Also, so you know
- 31:39Speaker 1: about sustainability and you know, reusing as much stuff as
- 31:43Speaker 1: we can. So I've started this actually cool habit which
- 31:46Speaker 1: I really like, is like putting clothes away in a
- 31:48Speaker 1: box that you just forget about. Like I get those
- 31:50Speaker 1: big plastic km up things the sixty leader tubs, pop
- 31:53Speaker 1: them away in the spare room, and then like two
- 31:55Speaker 1: seasons later, you open the box up and it's like
- 31:58Speaker 1: having you close. She's a genius, so so so good.
- 32:04Speaker 1: So yeah, I definitely do feel the pressure a little bit.
- 32:07Speaker 1: And I'm a massive fan of hiring. I hire like
- 32:09Speaker 1: a lot of my outfits for you know, events and
- 32:11Speaker 1: bits and pieces, and love doing loans from companies as well,
- 32:15Speaker 1: because then you're not actually having to buy stuff and
- 32:18Speaker 1: other girls can be loaning it, so that's really cool
- 32:21Speaker 1: as well. It's a nice advantage of having the ability
- 32:24Speaker 1: to do that.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Second last question of the formatted questions, what are you
- 32:28Speaker 2: currently saving for? Do you have a big money goal
- 32:30Speaker 2: at the moment?
- 32:31Speaker 1: Well, Scott and I, my partner, got engaged last week and.
- 32:35Speaker 2: I saw that I was going to stout your ring,
- 32:38Speaker 2: but I also thought that maybe I'm not going to
- 32:40Speaker 2: ask off the bat having just met it.
- 32:42Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 32:43Speaker 3: How did that ring fit in this studio?
- 32:44Speaker 1: I don't know? And Scott designed it himself.
- 32:47Speaker 2: What he's a hold on?
- 32:49Speaker 1: Hold on?
- 32:49Speaker 2: So is there diamond band on with it or is it?
- 32:53Speaker 1: Yes, it's like attached.
- 32:54Speaker 2: I love it.
- 32:55Speaker 1: I know.
- 32:56Speaker 2: I was so pervy and I was like, I'm not
- 32:57Speaker 2: going to ask you straight off the bat, that's so
- 33:00Speaker 2: ask me.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I love when people ask him like.
- 33:02Speaker 3: And was it a complete surprise or did you know
- 33:05Speaker 3: what was coming? Or tell us everything.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Total surprise, absolute, total surprise. I'm a pain in the ass,
- 33:09Speaker 1: and so I'm like sending Scott rings being like, you know,
- 33:12Speaker 1: be lovely to get married.
- 33:13Speaker 3: You know, it's really it sounds like someone I know,
- 33:15Speaker 3: Victoria divine.
- 33:17Speaker 1: I'll do what you have to say. My employ was
- 33:19Speaker 1: none of our friends are married yet, so I was like,
- 33:21Speaker 1: you know, you want to be the first. So people
- 33:23Speaker 1: are like so excited for your wedding, and it's like
- 33:26Speaker 1: get in first, the biggest, best party, and then all
- 33:28Speaker 1: the other rests, all the rest will like you know,
- 33:30Speaker 1: have to like compare to yours, which are first. Are
- 33:33Speaker 1: you're going to DJ you're in wedding? No way, no way,
- 33:36Speaker 1: no way, no way.
- 33:38Speaker 3: Work at your own wedding.
- 33:39Speaker 1: No.
- 33:39Speaker 2: But some people, like if they're musicians, they're like sing
- 33:42Speaker 2: at their own wedding or maybe.
- 33:43Speaker 1: Like it was a ten minute set, maybe a ten
- 33:45Speaker 1: minute set right at the end of like three Aye,
- 33:47Speaker 1: that would be so funn Will.
- 33:48Speaker 3: You knock out a few taxi turns at your wedding?
- 33:52Speaker 1: Well, I give that money.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Advice left friend I'll be like, guys, this is the
- 33:56Speaker 2: money win for you.
- 33:57Speaker 1: The tab is on me.
- 33:58Speaker 3: Here's a question, how am I to you planning on
- 34:00Speaker 3: spending for a wedding, because weddings can be anywhere from
- 34:03Speaker 3: zero to literally hundreds of thousands of dollars.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Well, the average wedding in Australia is apparently fifty two
- 34:09Speaker 2: thousand dollars as of a twenty nineteen study that I
- 34:12Speaker 2: was reading literally the other day.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a lot of dollars. Yeah, we don't know.
- 34:17Speaker 1: So obviously we're still in like I'm still shocked, Like
- 34:20Speaker 1: I look at it and I'm surprised.
- 34:21Speaker 2: I'll be around there on my finger. Yeah, I'm just
- 34:23Speaker 2: behind the mic and I'm trying to work.
- 34:26Speaker 1: But in regards to I don't know. I said to Scott,
- 34:28Speaker 1: we should start like a wedding saving account and just
- 34:31Speaker 1: like directly deposit X amount each week for both of
- 34:33Speaker 1: us so we can save up like hopefully pretty quickly
- 34:36Speaker 1: for the next twelve months and make that a priority.
- 34:39Speaker 1: I don't know how much, Like we don't have a
- 34:41Speaker 1: budget yet because we haven't spoken about any of it.
- 34:44Speaker 1: We had some really good friends just get married. A
- 34:48Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago, and I think their wedding came
- 34:51Speaker 1: in around oh, I don't know. It was probably a
- 34:54Speaker 1: bit over the average. And it's a lot of money
- 34:57Speaker 1: to be thinking about we do have, or.
- 35:00Speaker 3: It's exciting or when you think of the money side
- 35:02Speaker 3: of it, like it's one of.
- 35:03Speaker 1: These things where like it's terrifying because you're like, oh,
- 35:06Speaker 1: that's like a pretty good deposit on a house, Like yeow,
- 35:08Speaker 1: it's crazy, what a waste. But it is also exciting
- 35:12Speaker 1: in that Scott and I both do have good jobs,
- 35:15Speaker 1: and we are both conscious of the fact that, you know,
- 35:18Speaker 1: let's spend good money on the stuff that we really
- 35:21Speaker 1: care about and cheap out or skip the stuff that
- 35:24Speaker 1: we you know, don't want. Like we're not going to
- 35:26Speaker 1: have an engagement party. I think we'll have some friends
- 35:29Speaker 1: over and have a barbecue in the backyard stuff like that.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Like we're not going to do the high t's and
- 35:34Speaker 1: all that type of celler tees or whatever they're called.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Don't spend eight dollars per seat on a ribbon for
- 35:38Speaker 3: the chair.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Yeah, none of that. I mean, wait, hold on, did
- 35:42Speaker 1: you not do that at your wedding?
- 35:44Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 35:45Speaker 1: Geniuses? The two chairs so good, But we do have
- 35:50Speaker 1: an awesome like money in with the wedding. In that
- 35:53Speaker 1: Scott's parents live on an epic property, it's going to
- 35:56Speaker 1: be so so yeah, we're going to try and do
- 35:59Speaker 1: it there. And which you know, venues around Sydney are
- 36:03Speaker 1: like twenty grand kind of minimum, a huge wait list.
- 36:07Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, complete any date you want, yes, unless
- 36:11Speaker 2: they're hosting other weddings.
- 36:12Speaker 1: Well, funnily enough, Scott's sister got engaged five days after us.
- 36:16Speaker 2: See audacity would have.
- 36:18Speaker 3: Been so pierce to find out that you're snuck in
- 36:20Speaker 3: by a.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Anyway, So I think they're going to get married sooner
- 36:28Speaker 1: rather than later. So maybe in like September October from
- 36:30Speaker 1: the you know, the one quick conversation we've had with them,
- 36:33Speaker 1: So you can let them do that. They can trial
- 36:36Speaker 1: the venue, absolutely you can. Then in their twelve months time,
- 36:39Speaker 1: we'll take all their tips and genius.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I have a random question and just let me
- 36:44Speaker 3: go on the record of saying myself and I'm assuming
- 36:47Speaker 3: Victoria's all for this, so don't feel like it's awful
- 36:49Speaker 3: to say you do it ethically morally. Whatever. If some
- 36:53Speaker 3: brand was like, hey will chip in for the wedding
- 36:56Speaker 3: and supply the our brand of sparkling champagne or something.
- 37:00Speaker 3: Would you take the cash and the stuff? And like
- 37:02Speaker 3: I said, I would.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Percent just putting on record that if anybody at some
- 37:05Speaker 2: point when I do manage to get engaged and convinced
- 37:08Speaker 2: Steve that it is a good idea, I'll take it.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Yeah, what would you? Obviously it depends on brand in
- 37:14Speaker 3: theory one thousand.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Yes, I've already been hit up by three dress companies
- 37:19Speaker 1: and I am one hundred percent going to work with
- 37:23Speaker 1: one of them because why not. Oh my gosh, as
- 37:26Speaker 1: if not, like it's such, I don't mean so can
- 37:28Speaker 1: and look at the end of the day like you look,
- 37:30Speaker 1: I don't know. I've been obsessed with wedding photos the
- 37:32Speaker 1: last nine days and like looking through everyone's wedding stuff
- 37:36Speaker 1: and everyone's tagged anyway, So like you know, when it's like,
- 37:40Speaker 1: you know, hair by this person, make.
- 37:41Speaker 3: It, it'll be a pretty subtle hashtag spun, won't it. Yeah?
- 37:45Speaker 2: And it sounds wanky right now. I definitely don't have
- 37:47Speaker 2: enough followers to justify any of this, but I have
- 37:50Speaker 2: a lot of clients that do. And you kind of
- 37:52Speaker 2: go people following you because they're genuinely invested in your
- 37:55Speaker 2: journey and what you're up to, and it gives that
- 37:57Speaker 2: brand if they're willing to part with that. I don't
- 38:00Speaker 2: really love when influencers slide into brand stams and like
- 38:02Speaker 2: give us free stuff, but that gives them such great
- 38:05Speaker 2: exposure to a community that genuinely want to be.
- 38:08Speaker 1: More like you or see what you're up to. Like,
- 38:11Speaker 1: it's fantastic as long as like the brands aligned, which
- 38:14Speaker 1: I think for wedding generally they like will so yeah,
- 38:18Speaker 1: but then also we're conscious, like Scott and I spoke
- 38:19Speaker 1: about this the other day after we've gotten hit up
- 38:22Speaker 1: from the dress companies like not taking people for a
- 38:25Speaker 1: ride as well, because like that's their bread and butter,
- 38:27Speaker 1: so like figuring it out. But yes, if you want
- 38:30Speaker 1: to give me a discount for something wedding, hit me totally.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Champagne would be great.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Way hit us up.
- 38:37Speaker 3: We're friends with Yeah, we are.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Anyway back to the original question, that will be definitely
- 38:43Speaker 1: the next twelve months of saving. It wasn't on the
- 38:47Speaker 1: plan life plan, but that's fine, work we work with it.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Like I wasn't going to ask you that question, and
- 38:53Speaker 2: then I knew you got engaged, So I was like, I'm.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Gonna ask her because you bring up a wedding. I'm
- 38:57Speaker 1: happy to talk about weddings all the time.
- 39:00Speaker 2: So last question before we jump into a break, how
- 39:04Speaker 2: would you rate yourself if I forced you to give
- 39:05Speaker 2: yourself a financial reading.
- 39:07Speaker 1: I feel pretty proud of my development with money and
- 39:12Speaker 1: like what I've done shout out to my dad and
- 39:14Speaker 1: my great accountants. So I feel like I'd give myself
- 39:18Speaker 1: an A because I feel like I still have room
- 39:22Speaker 1: to move and to probably be a little bit more
- 39:25Speaker 1: savvy with general spending. But for the most part, I
- 39:28Speaker 1: feel like I'm really proud of the way I've invested
- 39:31Speaker 1: my money over the last ten years. I love that.
- 39:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going to ask you so many more questions
- 39:36Speaker 2: about that, right, I love? Did this really quick break?
- 39:45Speaker 2: All right, let's jump straight back into it.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Dara.
- 39:48Speaker 3: You said that your financial literacy or just interested in
- 39:52Speaker 3: it came from your dad. He was an accountant. Did
- 39:54Speaker 3: he literally sit you down and be like, okay, it's
- 39:57Speaker 3: homeschooling money time or how does that come about with him?
- 40:01Speaker 1: I think it's not been an exact sit down, A
- 40:03Speaker 1: good conversation of let's talk about money It was more
- 40:08Speaker 1: along the lines of a couple of years into the
- 40:10Speaker 1: business and things started to go really well, and it
- 40:14Speaker 1: was obvious that I needed some help with organizing stuff
- 40:18Speaker 1: because stuff just wasn't getting done, and there was money
- 40:21Speaker 1: coming in and there was money going out. And I
- 40:24Speaker 1: always had a bit of an anxiety of not actually
- 40:27Speaker 1: knowing how much money I owned, and running your own business,
- 40:33Speaker 1: you obviously have to pay your own tax and your
- 40:35Speaker 1: own super and you know, things like insurance and worker
- 40:39Speaker 1: scump and all these really gross bills, but they only
- 40:42Speaker 1: really ever come up, like once a quarter or once
- 40:44Speaker 1: every twelve months, and so at the beginning, I was
- 40:47Speaker 1: really unaware of how much money I actually had and
- 40:50Speaker 1: like what I was actually doing. And so Dad was
- 40:52Speaker 1: really great at coming in and helping me set up
- 40:56Speaker 1: processes and using zero and like getting a great like
- 41:00Speaker 1: you know, finance team on board to like, you know,
- 41:02Speaker 1: help me make some smart long term decisions. So he's
- 41:06Speaker 1: been really good in that respect, and I love his
- 41:10Speaker 1: outlook on finance, and he loves spending, but he also
- 41:14Speaker 1: loves saving, but spending things on the right things like
- 41:17Speaker 1: shares or property. Him and Mum are pretty frugal with
- 41:21Speaker 1: their spending. I'm definitely no where here is frugals. Oh
- 41:26Speaker 1: my gosh, my mom is horrified of the things I
- 41:28Speaker 1: spend my money on, like fourteen dollars vegan cheese, but
- 41:31Speaker 1: it's so delicious. I'm sorry.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Agree biocheese. It's biocheese, isn't it. You don't like biocheese?
- 41:38Speaker 2: I like Delecto's. Do you have Harri's Farm here?
- 41:42Speaker 1: I don't think so. It's like a big supermar grosser
- 41:45Speaker 1: in Sydney. You'll be able to get Delecto online. They
- 41:47Speaker 1: do a blue cheese and it literally tastes like blue cheese,
- 41:49Speaker 1: but it's really expensive. Yeah, ask yess how much I
- 41:53Speaker 1: spent all food?
- 41:54Speaker 3: Is?
- 41:54Speaker 1: Yes? Pretty bad.
- 41:55Speaker 3: What's your parents' vibe and your vibe on how money
- 41:58Speaker 3: works for you? So for me, for example, I actually
- 42:01Speaker 3: have no qualms about being rich. For me, it's just
- 42:03Speaker 3: about security. You know. I have this deep fear that
- 42:06Speaker 3: one day it'll all be gone and I'll be out
- 42:08Speaker 3: on the streets and I know. So for me, it's
- 42:09Speaker 3: about like safety in security, But for other people it's
- 42:12Speaker 3: about flashiness or doing stuff. And there's lots of different versions.
- 42:15Speaker 3: So what would your parents be and what would yours
- 42:17Speaker 3: be the same.
- 42:18Speaker 1: So Mum and dadda definitely safety and security. They do
- 42:22Speaker 1: have an amazing beautiful house. It's like right on the
- 42:26Speaker 1: ocean in Sydney, but it's like not flashy and that
- 42:29Speaker 1: it's you know, there's not marble bench stops and like
- 42:32Speaker 1: chandeliers and all this stuff. It's like a really cozy
- 42:34Speaker 1: home in that respect. That and they do definitely have
- 42:37Speaker 1: a safety and security mindset when it comes to money,
- 42:40Speaker 1: so like considering like their super and like their properties
- 42:43Speaker 1: and like their share portfolio and stuff. Dad definitely likes
- 42:46Speaker 1: to go rogue on the shares.
- 42:48Speaker 3: Or gets a hot tip and just has a crack
- 42:50Speaker 3: at something.
- 42:51Speaker 1: Absolutely, But I think I'm definitely like that as well,
- 42:55Speaker 1: keeping in mind what we were speaking about before about
- 42:59Speaker 1: really understanding that my career probably has some sort of
- 43:03Speaker 1: time frame on it and how to prepare for the future.
- 43:07Speaker 1: So I'm definitely not slashy. I'm definitely more about the
- 43:11Speaker 1: security kind of things. But in saying that, like, yeah,
- 43:14Speaker 1: I did just buy a new car, although it took
- 43:16Speaker 1: me way too long to do. And Scott and I
- 43:19Speaker 1: do live in a lovely house, but we're still renting
- 43:21Speaker 1: because we can't afford to buy the house that we
- 43:23Speaker 1: actually live in because the Sydney property market is just ridunculous.
- 43:27Speaker 1: So I think I do spend the money on things
- 43:30Speaker 1: that I know are going to make me happy and
- 43:32Speaker 1: make me feel good, but then also make sure there's
- 43:35Speaker 1: enough to be putting into you know, my savings and
- 43:38Speaker 1: my shares and all that kind of stuff.
- 43:40Speaker 2: You mentioned career before, and you know, knowing that there's
- 43:42Speaker 2: a limited timeframe on your career, but I want to
- 43:46Speaker 2: know what did you want to be when you grew up?
- 43:47Speaker 2: Did you always want to be a DJ? How did
- 43:49Speaker 2: that eventuate?
- 43:51Speaker 1: So I went to a selective girls high school, and
- 43:54Speaker 1: you were going to be like in finance, a doctor,
- 43:57Speaker 1: a lawyer, an engineer, and that was kind of easy.
- 44:01Speaker 1: So I actually went to UNI to study dentistry. What, yeah,
- 44:05Speaker 1: I know, she has such beautiful teath. Yeah, oh you
- 44:08Speaker 1: know what. That's why I wanted to do it, because
- 44:10Speaker 1: I had theest teeth you've ever seen. And then my
- 44:13Speaker 1: orthodontist changed my self confidence forever. Like I would never
- 44:17Speaker 1: open my mouth, I didn't want to smile. I feel
- 44:19Speaker 1: so sad thinking about how like.
- 44:21Speaker 2: I'm literally the same. If you go through our photos
- 44:23Speaker 2: on Instagram. I used to smile with a closed mouth,
- 44:26Speaker 2: and since in VISI line, I was like yay, and
- 44:28Speaker 2: I'm not even done.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Yes, seriously, I remember the day I got my braces off.
- 44:32Speaker 1: It was potentially the second happiest day of my life
- 44:35Speaker 1: because I was just like everyone look at so yeah.
- 44:40Speaker 1: I think having that incredible experience was what made me
- 44:43Speaker 1: want to give other people that experience. But twelve months
- 44:47Speaker 1: into doing a science degree it's in a UNI, I
- 44:49Speaker 1: was like, m this really really sucks hours long, and
- 44:52Speaker 1: to become an orthodontist it's generally like ten to fourteen
- 44:56Speaker 1: years of studying, practicing, specializing.
- 45:00Speaker 3: Yeah it's full.
- 45:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's a lot. And that just wasn't for me. Meanwhile,
- 45:04Speaker 1: I was DJing for twenty five dollars and a free
- 45:07Speaker 1: drink hard and absolutely loving the shit out of it.
- 45:12Speaker 1: And so then I changed to a Media and Communications degree,
- 45:15Speaker 1: which I then continued and finished while dj hustling on
- 45:19Speaker 1: the side.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Are you the most intelligent DJ in Australia?
- 45:23Speaker 1: No, I would love to be.
- 45:26Speaker 3: I don't know if this is a really like inappropriate question, like.
- 45:30Speaker 1: Probably is probably let's go.
- 45:32Speaker 3: Let's go. Anyway, You're like we've all just met like
- 45:35Speaker 3: in person today. You're clearly very smart, loving chatting with you.
- 45:39Speaker 2: Yeah, same, it's going much longer, and you are so articulate.
- 45:42Speaker 3: And I'm not blushing. I'm not suggesting that I was
- 45:45Speaker 3: implying otherwise. I'm honestly not. But do people assume that
- 45:49Speaker 3: someone who is really good looking has blonde hair and
- 45:51Speaker 3: is a DJ? Do they kind of assume you might
- 45:53Speaker 3: be a bit ditsy and a bit you know.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Like thing, Yes, one hundred percent few rude though this
- 46:00Speaker 1: I know, like this is even like not just from
- 46:04Speaker 1: being intelligent. It's actually a theme that goes fully into
- 46:07Speaker 1: the DJ industry in the music industry as well. Like
- 46:09Speaker 1: people still think I can't DJ or write music because
- 46:12Speaker 1: I'm a hot chick. It's rue, literally, and I'm like,
- 46:15Speaker 1: come to one of my shows and stand next to
- 46:18Speaker 1: me and watch me play because I'm a great DJ.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Like I love that, so, Like it's quite frustrating because
- 46:25Speaker 1: it means that, like, I don't know, there's something about society.
- 46:27Speaker 1: You can't be a good looking, confident woman and like
- 46:30Speaker 1: be intelligent or have an opinion or be really really
- 46:32Speaker 1: really good at your craft. Like it's very frustrating.
- 46:35Speaker 3: Are there some hot girl DJs who can't dj?
- 46:39Speaker 1: Sorry was swearing again, Absolutely yes.
- 46:42Speaker 2: But they are a really hot them in the bin.
- 46:45Speaker 1: There are hot guys and really unattractive guys as well
- 46:48Speaker 1: that can't DJ too. It's just I don't know. It's
- 46:50Speaker 1: something about the dance music industry and like electronic music,
- 46:54Speaker 1: they like love to hate on hot chicks. It's it's I.
- 46:57Speaker 3: Don't think that's that industry.
- 46:58Speaker 2: I feel like I think that's we are probably life too. Yeah,
